DCU from a Marvel fans limited perspective

recently i've accidently been sucked into the DCU universe, mostly Bat family, if i'm being honest, and although i've never watched a single movie/episode, this is what i have gathered from purely reading the occasional fanfiction/lots of tumblr posts

Bruce Wayne adopts these motherfuckers like they're some kind of limited edition pokemon set

Hello, I share your indignation about the new part of MK. Everything was changed too much and strangely. Can you write down the moments you didn't like? For example, I’m not happy with this whole situation with Kuai Liang - Scorpion, Tarkata - a disease, Raiden - Liu Kang 2.0, Fujin - Raiden’s sister, who is Kung Lao’s lover, seriously?

I WILL STATE that i have not bothered to look at everything myself but hear from reliable sources of the basic information of the game so i cannot give a full and fair critique. And i will not give this game anymore attention than i already have given it since it is just NOT a mortal kombat game.

Kuai liang as scorpion and in role reversal:

I am not a fan of this even remotely being "canon" Although the idea should be explored by fans WHO UNDERSTAND BOTH KUAI LIANG AND HANZO HASASHI AS CHARACTERS ORIGINALLY. It completely disrespects hanzo as a character and erases his connection to scorpion being a "gimmick thing to slap onto someone" as a title rather than a personal journey of meaning. And kuai deserves more respect as well, originally being an assassin whose clan tried to "modernize" by removing free will of warriors to ensure obedience and make their spirits and talents disposable. Trying to fight against that. It seems ironic in the end his fate is nothing more than to be toyed with by this unoriginal and uninspiring "role swap au lolz"

The tarkatan race being a disease:

I shouldn't even have to clarify how fucked up this is. Right after in mk 11 we saw tarkatans just being another race living in outworld minding their own business, and kotal fucking up (kotal khan is a wasted character but thats for another post) so we got what was once a "bad guy evil race" to something better. This is a really good question honestly. It was a fanart I saw on my dash of them and I got really curious about who they were!

I actually have known about Booster Gold since I was younger, but I didn't remember much of Ted at all 😭 I used to hate Booster because he was that stereotypical "annoying" character in my mind, and years ago I saw him all over my dashboard and I guess I just got sick of him.

But seeing that fanart (I don't remember who it was by!) made me intrigued now that I'm a bit older and I was like. Huh. Booster Gold doesn't suck? Spoiler: He still does. I just love him for it

After learning more about them I found a few reading lists (including that one hecka spreadsheet) and decided to give it a try since I'd been getting into comics at that time anyway (namely Green Lantern and Batman stuff)

I lowkey fell in love with Ted because he was really silly especially in his Charlton and solo stuff, but once I picked up Booster Gold 1986 it was OVER FOR ME. ITS SO OVER. I read through like 1000 comics in less than 90 days. And. It was an experience! something that makes me laugh is how bruce really should be like fucking 60-70 but so he can keep being batman, he's just eternally 40s-very early 50s. i think canonically the timeline from dick > jason > jason DYING > tim > jason COMING BACK > steph's small robin stint > damian > duke/cass is like. 10 years. which is kind of insane considering the decades of content. they would have to undergo these arcs EVERY DAMN DAY FOR THIS TO MAKE SENSE 😭

Batman vs Robin #1 Proves Why The General DCU Needs To Distance Itself From The World Of Batman

Its been a while since i’ve ever posted any kind of content relating directly to comic books but today’s issue of Batman vs Robin just was too much to be kept in silence. As much of a Batman fan I am, there’s also many things I favor in the DC Universe and its very irritating to be reminded of DC’s self-fulfilling prophecy.

(Spoilers ahead)

I'm just going to say it; Damian Wayne's issues with Batman are not compelling enough to have a possession storyline with him that includes wrecking up the entire mythos of the mystic side of DC Universe as a way to showcase the stakes involved with him being possessed and on the side of the Devil Nezha.

Firstly, I find it ridiculous there’s another storyline with Damian acting as an antagonist. Never mind the fact his heritage makes re-treading this murky territory and his fans are tired of it (some even find it racist) but my problem with him is that he’s Batman’s biological son so he’s gonna be pushing the bar. Of course he’s empowered far above Jakeem Thunder & Tim Hunter. Of course he thinks the literal most powerful mystic objects in DC are insufficient to taking down Batman. Of course Batman finds Damian to be a credible threat and not a 15 year old he can put in his place. Im tired of Damian (and by extension, Batman characters) getting into situations that narratively props their conflicts far moreso than general DCU character that hardly get to do shit.

Secondly, Nezha and Damian's actions (possessed or otherwise) having this wide of a effect on the DC Universe's magical verse is precisely the reason why Batman's world needs to stay in it's own corner. You have Justice League Dark and God's former agent of vegance all compromised and incapactiated to showcase the stakes Damian is involved in with Nezha. Why is this important you may ask?

If your defense for this is because Batman sells, well you're right. You want a cookie for an obvious answer? But here's the dealio: it's a self-fulfilling prophecy. Batman's stories are the only time where DC has any REAL stakes on par with actual events like Dark Crisis. The mere fact that this story is taking place at the same time as Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths should tell you something. How can anything else sell if nothing really matters or Batman matters more? Thanks to a empowered/possessed Damian, the world of magic is turned upside down. It's one of the selling points of it being a big stake event for Batman. Now what is the Justice League Dark title having going on in their own corner? NOTHING BECAUSE THEY DON'T HAVE A TITLE. IT GOT REGULATED TO A BACKUP BEFORE JUSTICE LEAGUE GOT CANCELLED.

One also has to ask WHY the magic characters and Justice League Dark in particular? The answer is pretty simple: it's a easy way to make the event look large AND make people look good. Dark Crisis did the same thing where all the magic characters are already aware the Great Darkness was up to some shit and just hid away. Part of their role is to showcase the continually larger stake at hand while also hinting towards said Darkness perhaps being manipulated. Just like Dark Crisis, Batman vs Robin uses magic characters to show off just how powerful Nezha is and how much more powerful he has/can make Damian. Just look at how the Justice League Dark is incapacitated. Look at how Nezha resides in the Tower of Fate, implied to have beaten Doctor Fate in his own place of power and uses it as a makeshift base of operations and can offer artifacts that ordinarly serve as plot mcguffins themselves. Even titles like Flash are guilty of doing this, as there was a JLD crossover with them fighting Eclipso. Wally got to save the day after finding out the bad guy's plan because of SCIENCE (the current Doctor Fate literally had to get a bachelor of science but I guess magic characters are stupid outside magic), saved the JLD from possession, and was immune to Eclipso because God loved him and is proud of him (nevermind the fact a Muslim character was involved in the plot heavily).

It's writing and portrayals like this that gives Marvel Comics an edge. While I'm not saying they're not above pulling this off themselves, it's pretty notable that Marvel has various books covering different characters potentially getting coverage that can impact their future on the big screen that may not inheretly step on other character(s) while DC/Warner Bros have to rely on Batman-centric books and events to sell things because they find it difficult to capitalize on their own comic book characters for anything. My Flash example also showcases this idea that in order to elevate something, someone has to be pushed down is a common thought process and it seems the JLD are contendable targets for years to come.

You'll notice that in all this, I didn't focus on Damian much or Alfred or any of the plot-relevant details. That is the case because I'm not wanting to put full care into that even though I read this to see Alfred's return. Not everyone wants to care about what's happening in Batman's world. There are people yhat like to see other aspects of DC be respected and treated with care and some don't even want to be involved in Batman's stuff. But books like this is what we get when those who want to follow magical-related characters are somewhat interested in a crossover; disrespected.

I wrote this because despite this happening, people are praising the issue because Damian/Bruce conflict and Alfred and I'll be damned if I can't raise awareness on the nonsense happening in this book. It is things like this that has significant limited my purhcase of ongoing series. The only Bat-related book I support is Sword of Azrael. It is sad that my favorite titles like Aquaman and Justice League Dark no longer gets ongoings while Batman's stuff can keep going even in it's medicority to bad stories phase. I think DC Comics, as a whole, needs to start seriously respecting their non-Batman titles if they hope to captialize on anything else not Batman.

are there any fun facts or trivia that you would like to share? idk tbh ive been a fan for almost two years so all the fun facts are either. normal information to me now (and im sure the same goes for every one that sees this post) or just comic facts that stop being facts once you take the time to read. like teenage mutant ninja turtles being based on daredevil. the yellow suit. the fact that people think daredevil is Marvel Batman? not true (also people LOOOVED pulling up waid's run as a counter to this on twitter during october/nov last year and i promise you that's not the only run that exists). uuummmm matt's first clients were the fantastic four. spider-man and daredevil HATEDDD each other when they first met like i love calling them enemies to lovers because spider-man was bent on figuring this guy (matt) out for some reason. a daredevil issue was stan lee's fav. uuummmm ben affleck originally auditioned for bullseye. this isn't really a fun fact because it's something you notice once you read issues 1 through 20 at least but daredevil, as a comic book, was a hit or miss and they weren't sure if it was gonna really be a Thing so it wasn't a monthly released comic book until a 11(?) issues in. after that it's advertised as 'coming every month!!' or something like that on the covers. OH IVE GOT A GOOD ONE: karen originally wasn't supposed to die like even after the story was written, smith didn't like the storyline but he was pressured into it by quesada who i guess just really hated that matt was in a 'stable' relationship (that's not true marvel comics just went fucking bankrupt i think and it was interesting so they did it). an okay one: maleev uses himself as a reference to draw matt which i think is really funny because now. he's literally matt murdock. yeah that's all ive got

Death Record Institutes or Facilities:

Essentially, these places record the deaths of every person who has ever died, and they include facts such as any possible Taboos they might have committed or any other major mortal crimes. Theft and robbery would not count; assault and murder would. Even if you got away with such crimes in life, they have branded you in death.

These places also mark whether the dead had become a spirit or a ghost. All of this is for multiple reasons. 1) People who had died earlier than the rest of their family or friends could check in at a later time to find out if their loved ones are still alive or have passed on. 2) If serious accusations come about between two spirits who had known each other in life, you have irrevocable proof.

Ghosts can change their names in death, and sometimes they might even forget about their past. You cannot change these records, however. But… this also means if one were to possibly fake their death… they would not show up in a Death Record Institute. Which... might come into play in another fic later on.

I don't know that much about Death Note, but I guess? this is a bit inspired by that? I'm not entirely sure, but I though I ought to give it credit just in case.

If you like the idea, feel free to include it in your own fics! Eventually, I'll get to show what it actually looks like or how it actually functions, but for now, I thought I'd name drop it and see the reactions. Who knows, I might just get inspiration from you all too.

What would Danny do for work?

I have a quick question to my fellow Danny Phantom fans... When you imagine Danny picking a career/job, what do you headcanon for him? And this is if he can't- for whatever reason- be an astronaut. This is a hypothetical question, it's not- like, going to affect any of my stories in the future or anything *chuckles nervously*

For me, it's always depended on the headcanon I choose for any particular story/AU. But that gets complicated when I have multiple headcanons that could offer opportunities for him.

For example:

Astrophysicist/Aerospace Engineer - He can't be an astronaut, but that doesn't mean he can't still do some kind of work that involves his love for space.

Engineer - In a similar vein, he could be a regular engineer. Especially if he takes after his dad, Jack, more and maybe even creates his own prototypes and inventions.

In a subset to engineer, in my story weekend wonders, Danny is majoring in biomedical engineering. This is because in this AU, the accident gave him chronic pain, and that's how he gained an interest in this field. This could also work great if he gets attention from the Justice League in a DP x DC crossover, or the Avengers in a DP x Marvel crossover; Danny could just as easily work with heroes who have disabilities or chronic pain from many decades of work as heroes. It helps that he personal experience with the same struggles, after all.

Translator - If you headcanon that Danny can understand a lot of languages (or maybe even them all) due to ghost speak, then Danny could totally use this to his advantage with work. Plus!! This offers many different avenues that could be used to your advantage. Want Danny to be connected to the UN in some way before debuting as Ghost King? Have him be a translator that works there. Want Danny to be busy often with his royal responsibilities/ghost fighting? Have him be a translator; he can work remotely or stay self-employed/on contracts.

Teacher - Danny doesn't have great experience with educational staff, so I could imagine him going into this field of work due to nothing but spite. And! He could teach ectobiology, or just ghosts in general. He could do so many topics: Biology, government, history, hell he could do a whole semester on how physics work in the Ghost Zone.

Blacksmith/Ironsmith - Okay, this one is more self-indulgent, but imagine if Pandora teaches him how to fight with a sword and then he gets obsessed with the sword itself that he wants to make one that's perfectly suited for him and this just dominos into going full-blown into this field. (Trade skills are still important, and sadly, don't get as much attention even when they can usually offer fairly decent pay without the thousands of dollars worth in student debt.)

Writer/Author - If you wanted him to be more artistic, he could be a freelance author/novelist or something similar. I feel like being an author would be one of the better choices for him because, again, if you were writing a story where Danny would be busy with a lot of other responsibilities, then he could largely work on his own schedule. Plus! I can totally imagine him hanging out in Long Now with Clockwork when his head is just full of ideas for a story but he wouldn't have the time to write it otherwise. So he kind of uses Long Now to get that time, but he can promise it's for a good cause, stop laughing, Clockwork!

Actor - I really love the concept of Danny being an actor, just for the laughs if nothing else. While this could be a pain if Danny does actually get famous, since that's a lot of media he would probably prefer not to deal with, the concept alone offers a great deal of shenanigans. And... if he does get a good movie deal, he could very well be set for life afterwards. He could be one of those one-hit wonders in television or something.

If anyone has other possibilities, feel free to add! My head is constantly spinning with even more ideas, I might just add some myself.

DP/DC Week 2022: Day 5

“Have you come to stop me, heroes?” Unnamed villain number 24 of the week cackled with evil glee. His smile began to wane when he noticed the assortment of Justice League members standing around at the bottom of the podium, just… standing there. Watching him. More than one of them looked resigned, in fact. Superman looked a little tired, if the villain were being honest. Was the man not getting enough rest? And Wonder Woman! She looked so bored in his presence, the villain felt a little offended.

“Have you given up and accepted me as your new ruler?” He chortled with a wide smirk. That garnered no reaction either. In the corner of his eyes, he could see the beautiful, powerful Crown of Fire resting innocently upon its pedestal. Oh, how he longed to place it upon his head and showcase the strength of someone who was truly worthy-

“If you can put that crown on your head, and it actually stays,” Green Lantern began, lifting his hands in a peaceful gesture. “I will literally give you fifty- no, a hundred dollars.” Then, the Green Lantern crossed his arms across his chest, looking at the villain expectantly.

DP/DC Week 2022: Day 3

When Bruce had opened the door to greet John Constantine, he had not expected to have a child suddenly thrust into his arms. He looked down at the boy, maybe two or three years old. The boy blinked back at him. Black hair, blue eyes.

He looked back at Constantine with alarm.

“He’s not yours,” Constantine reassured him with a roll of his eyes. “He’s a kid I work with. He’s usually a teenager but he got de-aged when we ran into this bi- witch, this witch.” Bruce sent Constantine a glare for his near mistake, propping up the young boy onto his hip. Strangely enough, the child didn’t seem to mind being held by a stranger, happily clutching Bruce by the neck with his small little hands. So cute.

Someone really needed to stop Bruce before he whipped out the adoption papers again.

Danny's death mark/scar

I've seen a lot of renditions of this idea/headcanon that I absolutely adore, there are versions where it's on one of his hands, or even on his back. There are so many ways that it can be done, which I've always soaked up and enjoyed. But version of this hc that's really stuck with me is:

What if it was on his chest? Right over his heart?

In this version of the hc, that would mean all the power of the portal-which, again, is the equal to ripping a hole in the fabric of the universe- was directed towards his heart. This would instantly kill him, while all this power would simultaneously revive him. Causing him to become a halfa. You could even argue that that's why Danny is just that powerful. All that power was directed at his chest which, as most of us headcanon in the phandom, is where his core would also be located.

A lot of us have always argued that the reason that Danny is so much more powerful than Vlad, and growing in power so much quicker, is because his death was instantaneous. While Vlad's was slower and over the span of many years, most likely.

And if all the power of an entire different dimension was directed towards the creation of his core, how powerful would that make Danny?

This is a concept I'll likely introduce in down the rabbit hole (goes the throne) eventually, and it's an idea you'll see in !!SPOILERS!! chapter 34 of lex luthor's ascent from supervillainy to fatherhood.

But more than anything... I just like it for the angst :P

Tim as Red Robin or Tim as Robin? And why?

There's so many different ways to view this ><

From a comic standpoint, I like his Red Robin run a bit more than his current Robin run in terms of narrative. In the Red Robin run we see him reach his breaking point time after time yet he still persists. We see him when the world around him is collapsing. We see our hero's deepest insecurities and we see him break down. Yet the reason he's our hero is because he gets his way out of it, even if he's still insecure, he continues on.

I like to see Tim's intellect and the way he outsmarts his opponents which is something incredibly cool to read in the Red Robin series. With his current Robin series (the only robin series I've really read with him aside from the current Batman Failsafe Arc and I hated that arc so) we get glimpses of all of that (mostly because we haven't gotten to the climax yet). What the Robin series focuses on is making the relationship with Bernard work while Tim is trying to find himself, whether that's his sexuality or who he truly is outside of Robin. And don't get me wrong, I love that, these series' are tied for me some days. But the Robin run just needs more time and it'll override the Red Robin run easily.

From a Fanon standpoint, they're pretty tied. I like him as the current Robin situation because he's independent, he's moved out, he's breaking away from the mold, etc etc. The issue I have is that Tim as Robin right now is all about finding who he is aside from everything that's going on. So then why is he still Robin?? That's why I like the theory behind him as Red Robin, he has his own title and he's breaking away from the Robin mantle. The issue I have is that Tim at this point is at rock bottom, has no support system and is not mentally sound whereas Robin has Bernard and Detective Williams to fall back on, hell, he knows he can reach out to anyone if he needed to. So they're even.

And from an aesthetic standpoint, ofc im a bigger fan of the current Robin Tim. I mean look at him:

From a writing standpoint, I usually write him in either his Robin ^^ suit or this suit:

I mean look at him, he's so cute.

So I guess Tim as Robin wins best 2 out of 3 with Red Robin.

as for a more intricate answer its hard to explain really. like if u asked a less experienced reader me i’d say dc for me is where i go for the stories of mythological characters vs with marvel i go for the more personal down to earth stories, but obviously this is not true, and i especially know this now that i’ve read so much dc.

but dc (now) means to me as much as marvel does. very important stories that were very fundamental to my growth and interests (i grew up on superman 78 and batman forever alongside raimi spidey). and then when i got into comics snyder/capullo batman was the first run i finished and collected (i own all of it, including metal! just death metal to go), so it was one of the defining pieces of comics for me that set the standard of what a comic book should be to me.

and really it defined the medium for me. i love these characters obviously but dc (as well as my formative marvel comics) made me also have an appreciation for the medium, the way it works, the way these things are presented. i can talk about a comic issue and dissect it for hours because of my interests in the medium i fucking love that stuff.

the batman 2022 did a lot for me too - i dont think its perfect but for what it is its so fucking good and in the time since into the spider-verse it reminded me that there are people in charge of these comic book movies who actually give a shit about these comics these rich histories these legacies and that meant a lot to me. gunn’s new stuff also has me excited because - even if im not into his guardians films as adaptations (theyre very good movies though) - hes a guy that very clearly actually loves and respects the source material, you know?

i guess you could say dc means a lot to me, without it i dont think id be here as a comic fan, or even just generally my interest in media and wanting to dig deeper and even wanting to make comics and video games. i love this stuff i would fundamentally be a different person without the company.
