No matter how many times you tried to prevent your mind from replaying the scene in the hallway, you still found yourself getting distracted.

Wanda seemed to notice. “Are you okay Y/N? You seem a little off today?”

Shaking your head a little to relieve yourself of those distracting thoughts, you replied: “I’m fine, Wanda. I appreciate you asking, though.”

Its not like me to get distracted, especially during my job.

“Of course. We are friends, you know.”

You chuckled. “I know. But right now, I’m your therapist. So keep talking.”

“If I do, will you listen this time?” She said with a smirk.

You decided to ignore that comment. “So how would you describe your state of mind these past few days?”

Wanda gave a slight laugh, knowing what you were doing. However, she cut you a break and continued your conversation.

The minutes passed by with little to no thought of James Barnes, and soon, your therapy session had ended.

“Alright, that’s it. I’ll see you again at 3pm Thursday.”

She smiled. “Sounds good, Doc.”

You said your goodbyes as you walked her to the door of your office. Once she left, you sighed and sat down at your desk. You checked the clock: 10:42. You groaned. Eighteen minutes until your meeting. While contemplating the advantages and disadvantages of faking an illness (the flu? Chicken pox? The plague?), a notification popped up on your phone. Checking it, you realized it was an email from your boss:

Good Morning, Y/N!

I just wanted to let you know that our meeting has been cancelled. Director Fury said he needs to speak with you. 11 sharp.

Grabbing your things quickly, you made for the door. Heels clacking loudly against the floor, you began a fast pace toward Fury’s office. There was no way you could be late to a meeting with him of all people. The minutes it took to reach his workplace felt like hours due to your frantic worries. Finally, your eyes met with the name plaque on his door: Nick Fury.

Smoothing down your skirt, you took a deep breath and knocked. A muffled ‘enter’ was your response. Another deep breath and you were opening the door, only to be met with the same icy blue eyes from earlier.

There, sitting in front of Fury’s desk, was the object of your obsession for the past few hours: James Buchanan Barnes. The Winter Soldier.

Once more, you found yourself floored by the man’s intensity. This time, however, it was Fury’s voice that brought you back to the present.

“Have a seat, Miss Y/L/N.”

“Yes, sir,” you hesitantly replied.

“I’ve called you here to introduce you to your new patient.”

Despite your confused appearance, Fury continued on. “He has to be cleared before he can go on any missions. Your sessions with Mr. Barnes will begin Friday.”

You felt James’s gaze on you. An unnamed feeling spread across your body.

He’s waiting for my reaction, you realized. He wants to see how I’ll respond to having to work with him.

Drawing strength from every professional fiber of your body, you prepared yourself and smiled. “Sounds good to me, Director Fury. Do you have a specific time in mind?”

His response was curt. “2:30pm.”

You smiled again, desperate to hide your nerves. “I’ll schedule it right away, sir.”

“Good.”

Ignoring Fury’s usual bluntness, you turned to James. “I look forward to working with you, Mr. Barnes.”

There was a hint of surprise in his expression, but he schooled himself quickly. Nodding, he turned back to Fury.

You didn’t take offense at his brusque nature. It was commonplace, you knew, for those that struggled with mental illness to behave in a blunt or off-kilter way. Instead, you made a mental note to express happiness at being around him. It would do him good for him to know people can be comfortable, and even look forward to, him being around.

(Even if I’m not totally comfortable).

Fury turned to look at James. “That’s all, Mr. Barnes. Remember your appointment, and I know you are aware of her office’s location.”

Was that . . . a . . . teasing tone of voice?

Even better, you could have sworn a light blush had settled on the soldier’s cheeks.

Nodding once more, James rose and strode out of the room.

Again, you were not put off by his behavior, as you had seen similar conduct from your other patients. Instead, you wondered about the odd exchange between Mr. Barnes and Fury. Am I missing something?

Your gaze settled back on Fury. “Was there a reason you had my meeting cancelled, Director Fury? Not to be disrespectful, but couldn’t you’ve just had me meet you later, sir?”

He chuckled. “Well sure, but that wouldn’t get you out of your meeting would it?”

You laughed, and felt the tension that you hadn’t even realized was still there release from your shoulders.

“It’s much appreciated, Director Fury.”

“No problem. And kid?”

“Yes, sir?”

“Get back to work.”

You scrambled for your things. “Yep, sure thing, sir.”

Headed toward the door, you gave one last look behind you. “Have a good day, sir.”

“Goodbye, kid.”

“Y-yep. Goodbye,” you stuttered.

You stepped out of his office and shut the door behind you. Breathing a sigh of relief, you made your way back to your office.

Katsugeki’s Dub is... (AKA, Why I Despise English Dubs In General) // Literally No One Asked

So, I was trying to work through the last bits of my classwork when the Katsugeki dub trailer popped into my recc feed again, and out of sheer “eh sure I’m bored” I watched it. I knew I was going to dislike it, but this line of dialogue left me McSh00keth:

“What’s wrong, Kunihiro? You wiped out already?“ “No way! I can do this all night!“ “Excellent, kid.“

I’m sorry. Play that again, one more time?

“Excellent, kid.“

K I D. At first, I thought “haha, very funny Izuminokami, but you’re younger than Horikawa. Respect your elders!“ and then I went into my friend’s DMs and proceeded to harass her with 9238759823745923745 messages explaining exactly why I dislike English dubs except for three in particular (Fire Emblem Awakening, Fire Emblem Echoes, and Hetalia. However, this is a story for another time). Sorry about that, lol.

But then, I realised. “Kid”... almost murders the dynamic, based on one tiny piece of dialogue. Granted, I haven’t watched anything else of the dub, so I might be wrong about how the ENG dub characterizes the two, but there was something about “KID” that really rubbed by the wrong way.

So, here are my two cents on the ENG dub and why it probably murders the character dynamic:

We know that in this workplace setting, Izuminokami's more experienced, having been summoned before Horikawa and also this is his first mission. But in the JPN dub, he and Horikawa treat each other like equals (or so it sounds that way, anyways) and I must stress this because "kid" makes it look like Izuminokami's the older one and he might not value or respect Horikawa because "kid" is often a diminutive of sorts.

Because Izuminokami is actually the younger one, he's more likely to be brash and have the emotional maturity of a five year old. Or, more accurately in most depictions of him in fanon, canon, and also some anthologies, he’s a rowdy teenager who can be mature and wise- oh wait, that’s almost like most sensible teenagers nowadays. Huh.

Well, regardless, I see this as a major problem. Yes, Horikawa does end up falling into the trap of altering history like Yamatonokami does in Hanamaru. But he's more open about "I'm upset about this. I can tell and I know you're upset about this. I'm doing this for you to ease that guilt for you". Izuminokami just shoves his feelings aside which works well enough for the mission, but comes at a detriment for his own and Horikawa’s emotional wellbeing.

His refusal of acknowledging how he really feels and being open about it (much like a teenager would) is what spurs on Horikawa’s pulling a Yamatonokami. While Horikawa’s actions might be considered childish at first glance, it’s really just as much Izuminokami’s childish/teenager-ish (lol) miscommunication.

This is where the dub fails. By having Izuminokami say “kid”, it not only starts to murder how the characters actually interact in canon (in game and in other JPN portrayals). It immediately puts Izuminokami into the wrong category in the audience’s mind: older than his partner = more mature. Yes, he’s “older” in a workplace sense. Yes, he’s perceptive. Yes, he can be mature. But he still acts more like a teenager in most, if not all depictions of him in other works and this comes back to bite him at the end of the series.

I think, if I heard him call Horikawa “kid” without any foreknowledge of how they both act in their JPN depictions, he’d be old enough to at least say “yeah, I have guilt over not being there by Hijikata’s side, but we aren’t allowed to do anything about it. I’m sorry, but that’s not our mission here” at the end of episode 10. Even a hamfisted remark would be appropriate.

But that’s not what he does. He says “it would only be painful to see Hijikata again” and “just complete the mission”, much like a teenage deflection might sound.

I don’t like the ENG dub. Without even watching a few episodes, I can tell that things have gotten lost in translation more so that a sub would. The Katsugeki dub doesn’t simply assassinate the dynamic between the two characters. It murders it in broad daylight.

But just because we do it, is it right? I'm incredibly proud of how accurate our show is. What you saw, what you heard and what you understood from the show is really, really close to fact. But is it better to tell 100 truths that no one hears or 99 truths and one lie that everyone hears? It depends on the lie, of course. Do you intend to deceive or are you trying to express the otherwise inexpressible? Valery Legasov, the man portrayed by Jared Harris, spends much of the final episode of Chernobyl testifying at a Soviet show trial. In reality, he wasn't at that trial at all. If I abandon our hero in the final episode and introduce someone entirely new, if I violate the demands of the story-craving human mind, then who will pay any attention at all? Who will come to know what is true? Legasov actually did face the same choices and dangers we depicted in that trial. He confronted them in the workplace. They manifested themselves through the internal politics of the Soviet scientific community, which would have required three or four hours of excruciatingly bad television. So I chose the demands of narrative. But if I permanently obscure the truth, then I'm guilty of the same crime I'm decrying. This is why I created a companion podcast for the show; if I cannot escape the need to tell a story, at least I can tell another story about how I made changes to tell a story! I can hold myself accountable. And here's the encouraging part. People listened. It didn't diminish their experience of the show. It enhanced it. What I took on faith, I now know to be so: The audience understands. They are completely capable of embracing a narrative and then exercising their curiosity to find out where the story strayed from fact. As writers, now more than ever, we have to defend the truth. Happily, this doesn't require abandoning our narrative art. Quite the opposite! Hook 'em with a good story, and they'll come asking you for more. They'll come asking for the truth. And that is when you get to tell it.

Fight!

Yes, I am encouraging you to fight.

For a very long time, I avoided confrontations. In my mind, insinuated by my surroundings and upbringing, confrontations are done by selfish immature beings who do not care about people other than themselves.

I was taught that the one who talks the loudest is the one who does not have much in their heads. Empty cans make the loudest noise. Often, we see the picture of two people; one who talks while having an empty head and another who is silent with a library of books in their head indicating the presence of knowledge. While in some cases this proves to be true, I cannot help but wonder to what extent this depiction is accurate. But being a socially awkward introvert, I was happy to hold on to it to justify my silence for a very long time.

It was only two decades later that I realized how unhealthy it was.

Silence is not unhealthy.

Thinking before talking is not unhealthy.

Being the calm one among screaming people is not unhealthy.

Settling with stuff I was uncomfortable with, without any effort to solve the problem is unhealthy.

Hoping and waiting for the other party to change, without making them aware of their mistake is unhealthy.

I grew up in a society that lays high importance on taking care of people’s feelings. In most situations, other people’s hearts need to be taken into account before making decisions. ‘Jaga hati’ as we say it. While this is not entirely bad, I often find myself pressurized to make it a priority in my decision making. When this happens, I tend to downplay other important factors which ends up affecting me in the long run.

I learnt not to voice out any discomfort, on account of trying not to disrupt other people’s peace. When I had a problem with my uncle, I chose to keep things to myself to avoid confrontations so that other family members would not feel uncomfortable with our situation. I thought I had made the best decision. I thought I was minimizing the damage.

In reality, I denied myself and my uncle a chance to learn. Our dispute was nothing but an indication of something we had done wrong.

Had we not put into consideration other people who were irrelevant in the situation, had we confronted each other, had we fought, we could have learned of our actions that offended one another. My uncle and I could have learned not to repeat our mistakes. Not to each other, not to other people. We could have had a chance to grow.

I live in a society that places high importance on taking care of people’s feelings. Ironically, talking behind someone’s back is a common practice in settings where a lot of people gather. The more close-knitted the group is, the more this is true. I find that most of us would complain somewhere else and stay in a situation that makes us uncomfortable, rather than confront the party that causes the discomfort and try to solve the problem. We believe complaining to other people who are not in a position that could help us as the only choice we have in our attempt to release the stress we have been building up if we want to avoid risking our relationship with the person we have the problem with. What we fail to take into account is that it becomes the seed of other problems. Not only we risk losing our integrity, but if our words travel and reach the person we speak of, our chances to solve the actual problem will be hindered by the ill feelings caused by our actions.

Sometimes we value a relationship so much that we do not want a confrontation to risk losing it. This is commonly seen in romantic relationships. I personally think there is nothing wrong with putting up with another person’s weaknesses, even more so if it is someone I love. While I agree that it is difficult to point out their shortcomings, I also think it is important to let them know which areas they could benefit from if there is growth. Being aware of our flaws is better than ignorance even if there is no such thing as perfection. For me, encouraging each other’s personal growth is a part of love.

There are cases where two parties in dispute are not able to reconcile. When both my employer and I insisted that we were right, I realized that I could either suck it up and live with my discomfort in the workplace, or leave. Where I could not improve my situation, another option for me was to respect myself and remove myself entirely from situations that bring me pain.

Confrontations are not without risks. There are chances of one or both parties being consumed by ego thus preventing us to learn the lesson. There are chances of losing relationships. There are chances of physical violence. Confrontations do not have to be violent, but if we see two people go at it, I suggest we let them be as long as there is no potential of any of them getting seriously hurt. Disrupting confrontations will only lead to grudge and prolonged dispute. By avoiding confrontations, we deny ourselves a chance to put into light the things that we can improve on.

AO3 stats project: tags

In this post, we'll discuss tags on the Archive of Our Own! Please note: because the works on the Archive include explicit material, some of the tags discussed in this post may not be appropriate for your workplace.

The Archive of Our Own has one of the best tagging systems around. You can read more about it here, here, here, or here. For our purposes, the important part is that users can tag their works however they want, and then a group of people called "tag wranglers" sort those tags, either adding them as synonyms of existing tags or creating new canonical versions for them. What I'll be showing here is the "canonical" version of the tags. For example, a work tagged "flufffffff" or "so fluffy!" would have those two tags assigned to the canonical tag "Fluff", so I will consider both of those tags as being "Fluff" to get the most accurate count.

The other important thing about AO3 tags is that they come in four flavors. The first one is "warnings", the content warnings required by the Archive (plus the default tag indicating you're abstaining from the warnings system). The second flavor is "Characters", tags describing the characters in the work. The third is "Relationships", tags describing the platonic or romantic relationships depicted in the work--typically, "X/Y" indicates a romantic and/or sexual relationship between characters X and Y, while "X&Y" means a platonic relationship, although this usage isn't universal and isn't enforced. The final category is "freeform", aka everything else.

Again, the tagging system is freeform and optional. In particular, I'll note that "character" tags and "relationship" tags don't necessarily imply each other: you can have a work tagged "Sherlock Holmes/John Watson" that only features Mycroft Holmes, or that features John and Sherlock but doesn't tag them as characters, only as the relationship. So remember that--while it's pretty good on average, because people tag their works so readers/viewers can find them--the number of uses of a character tag isn't the same as the number of works that feature that character, for example.

Okay! So what are the most popular freeform tags on the Archive? If you read a lot of fanfiction, I doubt you will be surprised by anything on this list. Left column is the top 15 tags by number of uses, while right column is the top 15 tags by the cumulative hit count on every work tagged with that tag.

Are these tags consistently popular over time? For reasons of space, I’ll just plot the top 10 by number of works:

If you look back at the works vs time plot in the second post, you'll see that yes, the shape of these trends is similar to the total number of works, so trends in fannish tastes haven’t changed much over the time the AO3 has been in existence. (These show a little more bumpiness because there are fewer works in each plot.)
