All Grown Up:
Tumblr media
Summary: The Kazansky and Kerner’s watch their daughters graduate from High School.
🚨warnings🚨: fluff, soft Slider and Iceman moments.
{masterlist 📚} {previous chapter 📎} {next chapter 📖}
In honor of our baby Mousey graduating HS in a few weeks!
Tumblr media
It was a hot afternoon in May on the Miramar base that the Kazansky family were currently stationed at.
Ice and Dragon couldn’t be more proud of their daughters as the couple and the Kerner’s sat by one another to watch this big moment in their children’s lives.
The tight friendship between their parents had been carried on to the Kazansky sisters and the Kerner girl.
When both women were told that they had a low chance to have a baby, it pained them to know that they wouldn’t be able to experience the same things as other couples on the base.
But by what seems like a wish upon a shooting star, within a month of each other, Rachael and Jade found out that they were pregnant.
Tom and Ron were very helpful during the pregnancies and tried to be there for every appointment and when the men couldn’t, the women would be each others support systems.
They were all thankful for this day, the girls because they could finally follow in their parents footsteps and join the Navy and the couples because it showed that their babies were growing up.
Tumblr media
The girls were all dressed in their official Navy Officer uniforms, hair slicked back in the mandatory bun, and the Navy chords laying on the back of their necks.
Nerves shot up their backs as they waited in the line before walking out to the football stadium that held the awaiting parents.
Baylie Kazansky, the eldest, started the hand holding train with the two other girls behind her. As the leader, she made sure to care for the younger two.
Raven was in the middle and the youngest of the group, the older girls protected her at all cost and wouldn’t let anyone hurt their Mousey.
Last but not least, was Amanda Kerner. The only child of Slider and Whiskey, but saw the Kazansky’s as her second family.
All the girls had ‘graduated’ in the second semester of the school year and gone to bootcamp between then and now.
Today made it official and would get their diplomas that they worked so hard for during the four years of high school they finished.
The music started and the line moved to the door, one by one all the students came outside and sat in order, just like they practiced earlier in the day.
A speech was made by the Salutatorian before the Principal and the Vice Principal made their own.
A moment of silence was announced for the Military members present and who had passed then the Valedictorian made his speech.
More time passed before the Principal started to call the names of students.
As the last of the surnames that started with J’s were called up to the stage, Baylie buzzed with excitement and squeezed Raven’s hand, who in which returned it and did the same to Amanda.
“Baylie Ann Kazansky,” Mr. Simpson called and with one last squeeze, Bay started her walk to the stairs that attached to the stage.
Thinking quickly she jumped in the air on the last step and did a little heel click, a smile on her face after she stuck the landing.
She heard the shouts of her family as she shook her Principal and the Vice Principal’s hand as she held the diploma and the photographer took the picture.
At the end of the stairs stood a junior who handed her a red carnation with a silver ribbon tied in a bow around the stem.
She was just barely to her seat before her sister was called. “Raven Alice Kazansky-Fischer.” Mouse, as her nickname suggests, shyly took the stage and did the same as the many students before her.
Seeing her older sister cause chaos, just like her mother and aunt would’ve done, decided to also do something.
So, with a half-assed plan created, she slid down the bannister and almost fell on her face.
Amanda Kerner was known for being clumsy, often falling over her own feet, so why would today be any different.
“Amanda Louise Kerner.” She stood up and started to make her way to the stage, glancing up into the bleachers to find her family. Once she did, she gave a small smile and held her head up high.
When she was on the last step she missed and almost fell flat on her face, but at the last second saved herself.
Amanda started to laugh and her face heated up a little embarrassed about the whole thing as she walked up to the Principal and copy the hundreds before her.
After she had her carnation in hand, made her way back to her seat as the next student was announced.
The three girls scooted the chairs closer and held hands again, this time their achievements in the other as they all waited for the rest of the students to be called.
Tumblr media
Ron and Jade both could see her body move with giggles and her face flushed a light pink as their daughter took the diploma.
Tom lightly smacked Ron’s shoulder as he laughed at his niece.
The Kerner parents have no idea where their daughter’s clumsiness comes from, both steady on land and in air, but they always had a good laugh about it.
Often making jokes and sharing the moments with Tom and Rachael.
Both couples did this with their children and the hilarious memories that would forever be remembered.
It only took seconds before the laughter turned into tears as they cheered or whistled for their children.
Proud was not the word that could describe this experience, because they all felt like that wasn’t the right one to use.
Both couples felt more than proud for their children, but didn’t know if there was a word to explain how much.
After the last student was called, another speech was made and then the Principal said the sentence that the girls and the couples were waiting for, “Please give a round of applause for the graduating class of 2017! You may move the tassel from the right to the left!”
Tumblr media
One by one starting from the closest to the stage, all the lines of students started to exit and were free to find their families.
Ron, being the tall giraffe man that he is, spotted the girls first and guided the others to the recent graduates.
He didn’t wait for his daughter to see him, immediately pulling her into a bear hug and squeezing tighter when he feels her jump, a chuckle vibrates through his chest.
He knows that she realizes who it is after the chuckle, and turns around in his arms to hug him back.
Jade joins not too long afterwards, wanting the father and daughter to have a moment just for them.
Soon Ron lets go for the same reason as his wife, a special moment shared between a mother and a daughter.
More tears are shed as the embrace continues before Jade eventually brakes it, too choked up for words.
Ron stands in front of his little baby, tears gathering at his eyes as he looks at her in the Navy Dress Blues and sees a younger version of her mother.
He lightly punches her chin and whispers, “Here’s looking at you kid.” Amanda sniffles, tears threatening to fall again as she softly punches his chest, “Here’s looking at you dad.”
Ron pulls her into another hug, wanting this moment to freeze in time.
Tumblr media
The Kazansky’s are too lost in their own little world to pay attention to the Kerner’s.
Baylie, the daddy’s girl she is, runs to Tom first. His callsign might be ‘Iceman’ but right now, his ice cold persona is gone for his beautiful daughters.
He pulls away slightly and kisses her forehead, “Come home to me, Bay.”
Baylie reaches up to her father’s forehead barely in her tippy-toes, gives him a soft head-butt and whispers back, “Always.”
He doesn’t stop the tears, nor would he want to. Both crying freely as they hug each other tight.
“You’re tarnishing the Iceman name, you know.” She chuckles.
“Right now Bay, I could care less about that, not while I have you in my arms.”
A short amount of time passes before Raven is in his arms.
“Keep me in your heart,” Tom murmurs into her hair.
“Keep me in your mind,” Raven replied into his chest as she squeezed him impossibly tight, knocking the breath from his lungs.
He doesn’t want to ever let go, so blessed to have a moment like this to share and remember as the years go by.
He never thought he’d get to experience his children’s birth, so he was beyond happy to see them graduate.
Rachael lays her cheek against Raven’s head as the two hug, tears falling from her eyes to the young woman’s hair.
Raven was in no better shape than her mother, tears running down her face as they hugged.
After a couple of minutes went by, seeing that Bay and Tom were finishing their little father-daughter moment, she reluctantly let go. “I’m beyond proud of you my little Mouse.” “I’m proud to be your daughter, biological or not.”
Rachael couldn’t hold the gates and started to cry again, but soon was hugged by her eldest. “You know that we’ll always be your little girls right?”
Rachael petted Bay’s hair, followed by a kiss, “I know, I know. It’s just hard to believe that our babies are so grown up.”
Bay didn’t respond, just squeezed her tighter. All the words needed exchanged between them through the embrace.
The memory etched into her minds eye forever.
Tumblr media
Individual family moments over, the two families came together and celebrated the girls’ graduation with hugs and ‘I’m so proud of you’s.’
They all took turns taking pictures of each families before asking someone passing by to take a group.
With that done, they all hopped into their cars and headed over to Top Gun where their Aunts and Uncles were gathered and ready to see the Graduates.
When they arrived they were all bombarded with open arms, food and drinks, and ‘congratulations!’
The girls could tell by the warmth and smiles that these strong and brave men and women they’ve known their whole lives were just as proud as their parents.
The girls knew that their support system was always going to be there for every accomplishment they go through and couldn’t be more happy by that fact.
And as the years go by, more and more memories were created and photographed so they could all look back and relive the moments and the feelings they all shared.

It had been a couple of weeks and Amanda had finally settled into the Dagger Squad and San Diego and met the rest of the ‘Chaos Squad’ and the Daggers’ Aviator Mamas, Rachael Dragon Kazansky and Jade Whiskey Kerner.
Birdie met Whiskey when one day after Bird had just got home from walking Ozzy. Mickey and Baylie forgot that they had a guest and were being loud in the bedroom.
She didn’t stay long after the loud moans could be heard around the house.
So, with wanting to get away and let the newly-weds have their alonetime Bird went to the library. She was in the romance books when she literally ran into Commander Jade Whiskey Kerner.
“I’m so sorry Commander, I didn’t mean to run into you.” she rushed as she moved aside.
The older woman just laughed and they both sat down together and talked for hours until Bay called and asked where she’d gone.
Bird had gotten to know the other squad members and formed a good bond with all of them. Bo and her started to mend the relationship slowly but surely.
We were laughing and joking every once in a while and Bird started to call him Bo instead of Robert again here and there, which she could tell made his smile wider if possible.
She wanted to be able to trust him full-heartily, but he betrayed that in Lemoore and it would take work and effort on both sides to see this be mended to what it was.
Bird was willing and she could tell he was too, but how long will it last before he loses his temper or decides that he can’t go through it again.
They were on a team now and from what she’s been told, Bay and Mickey were on the Uranium mission and are better than ever, so why did he push her away?
Robert and her could be half way done with the wedding planning by now, she could’ve sent the ‘Save The Date’ cards to their families and friends and she’d have her dress already.
She’d have a dress, a wedding dress that would take his breath away and make him cry from Birdie’s beauty and her father would walk her down the aisle, tears in his eyes as he gives his only daughter to the man she loved.
Hailey and Heather would be Maid of Honor and a Bride’s Maid, standing by her side as Bo and her said their vows and exchanged rings.
Bird had this imagine in her mind since she said “Yes!” all those months ago when everything was happy and great.
After the first week of being in the Dagger Squad and already tired of Hangman and Rooster’s constant bitching and competitiveness, Birdie went to the closest Walmart and bought a Disney Princess kids’ dress up set.
The next day, Birdie went onto base and put the tiara in her locker and as soon as either of the boys started to bitch about who was the best of the group.
She asked for them to wait as she grabbed it and hid the plastic crown behind her back as she walked back in.
When she revealed the tiara, everyone was confused, but the looks on their faces quickly turned into smiles and laughter as Bird placed it on Roos’ head and said, “You have been crowned the Bitch of the Day. As you see fit My Majesty.” and bowed.
All the aviators, except Bob, took turns slamming their hands and fists onto the top of her helmet.
Most of them were nice, but Baylie was the most ruthless, always making sure that Birdie could feel the vibrations through the helmet.
Birdie new that once Bo got comfortable again, he’d be the nicest one, but until then, Mickey was.
Fanboy saw her as a little sister and always made sure that Bird was treated nicely when he was around.
After a month of being a guest in the Garcia’s house, seeing, learning, and hearing things that new friends shouldn’t, Birdie had put in a request for a on-base house and is currently waiting for an opening.
She had been to the Hard Deck and met Penny, Amelia, and Grace, but preferred to be called her honorary callsign; Spicy.
The girls of the Dagger Squad, Grace and Alana, and Rachael and Jade became a squad of their own, known around the base and off as the Chaos Squad.
This little grouping of chaotic women didn’t help Bird’s nonexistent relationship with Cyclone, especially after meeting with his wife, Robyn Venom Simpson.
She also had been introduced to Roos’ step-mother, Grace O’Mally Bradshaw. Both women were lovely and so much fun to be around.
Birdie didn’t want the six months to go by too quickly so she had enough time to really get to know the group and form a tight friendship with each of them.
She was going to be sad when the time period was up and she was deployed to another base, but this is what she signed up for years ago.
Bird just wanted to mend one relationship when she first arrived and now was lucky enough to walk away with more friendships than she though she would.
She also would walk away with a family. A father and mother, aunt and uncle, sisters and brothers that will always be in her life no matter what.
Even if Bo and her don't bury the hatchet, the others have told her so many times when she’d voiced her concern over the subject.
Ozzy was happier too, he had more people to love and care for him now and was loving every bit of attention that the others were giving him.
It had been more than once that Ozzy had kicked Mickey out of the bed so he could snuggle Baylie.
Bird knew when Ozzy was with Bay when Mickey is getting comfy on the couch, she’d always offer to get Oz and he could be with his wife.
He always waved her off and said that Bay’s been wanting a dog for a while and if this is keeping her mind off of one for them, he’d happily give up his bed.
We were also briefed on another upcoming mission and the team started training and had been doing good.
There was more time to complete the training this time too, which Birdie was thankful for, she’d just joined the squad.
It was crazy to think that these few weeks together had felt like a lifetime already and Bird wouldn’t change anything if it meant that she’d never met them.
Don’t get her wrong, Bird was beyond sad when Bo broke her heart, but it kinda feels worth it now.
Because without that lost, she wouldn’t have gained a family, a very chaotic family, but one none the less.
Bird felt as if she was home. Bo helped with that, he had been her home for four years prior and Bird couldn’t stop thinking as him as that.
Robert Floyd has had her heart since that day on the trail for training in bootcamp and he gave Birdie that rock after telling her that he would keep the little mushroom she had picked just for him.
Bird knows that it's stupid to say that was the moment he took her heart, over a silly little thing as a mushroom, but it was.
Bo took the little fungus and while others would’ve thrown it over their shoulders when I wasn’t looking, he kept it, and later in the recreational room, he gifted me a rock.
Even if he didn’t realize it, he spoke my love language, sentimental gifts that make no sense to anyone else but us.
I was grateful to have a friend that finally understood me and embraced my quirks.
Not that Athena didn’t, she did, but she got tired of it sometimes.
Bird doesn’t blame her though, having a neurodivergent friend can be exhausting when they have hyper-activity and can’t focus on anything and everything most days.
Bo took the randomness of me as if it was an exciting adventure and had the patience of a Saint to wait for me when it was harder to keep on tasks.
He was considerate when I said I was overwhelmed and noticed the signs when I was too scared of ruining his night by leaving early.
Bo never got upset or argued, he’d just say an excuse for us to leave and then we’re in his car and going home.
Bird’s family never really got why she had a harder time on some of the subjects at school, but after a teacher had spotted the symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder or ADD, she recomended that Birdie gets tested.
When the results came back positive and they started her on some medication to help, her grades went up and she was focusing better on tasks, but her family still sometimes treated her as before.
The family she had in San Diego though, they understood and also took the time to help her, just like they do for Mouse.
The squads watch for certain behaviors and try to soothe the others’ emotions.
Just like when Roos noticed Bird was nervous and overwhelmed before flying on her first day back at Top Gun and knew that she needed to do a pre-flight ritual.
He was there for Bird even if he didn’t know exactly what she needed.
Amanda finally found a group of friends that understand and are willing to help and she couldn’t be more thankful for them.
Not that she’d let Hangman know that she’s appreciative of him, his egos big enough.
Tumblr media
It had been a month in San Diego when Bird got the phone call from her mother that a friend back home had died, she immediately drew back from the squad.
Baylie and Mickey saw the happy-go-lucky woman turn distant and quiet in the matter of seconds. Bird didn’t waste any time in running to her room and bursting into tears.
They had known each other since they were children. The two women were cousins, best friends, and practically inseparable. Bird had known about Hailey’s depression for years.
No one really took her seriously when she’d lay in bed for days, no energy or motivation to get up and eat and take care of herself.
But Bird did, she took the mental health of others very seriously. As did her parents, especially after what her mother experienced at eighteen.
Jackson, her grandfather, was something that the Wheeler side of the family didn’t talk about and when they did, it wasn’t a lot.
They saw him as a disgrace, for suicide is the highest Sin that one could commit in they eyes of God.
The Wheeler family might not always be the most religious but they do follow His word. From the brief stories that her mother told, Jackson was a mean alcoholic. Everyday he’d drink until he was good and drunk.
That’s how he coped with being depressed, but it was the early 80’s and not a lot of people sought out for help, they turned to drink or drugs or whatever tickled their fancy.
Bird will never forget the day that her mother had pulled out that damned bullwhip from her Hope Chest and told all three of her children the story of it.
Then after the story was done, Kathleen Hallet took in her children’s faces and said, “If you ever feel like you’re not yourself, please tell your dad or me ok?”
All the siblings nodded their heads as Kathleen tried to make sure they understood what she was talking about. And even as the children grew, Nick and Kat reminded them and gave more encouragement to talk to them if needed.
Birdie was 8 when she was first introduced to her grandfather’s memory and every blue moon she’d learn something new.
She was 17 when she learned that Jackson was his name, had a fraternal twin brother named John, that he liked Lions, and was fortunate enough to be given his old wool jacket and a small lion figurine.
Bird was 20 when she was told that Mamaw and Papaw Wheeler owned a bar and he and his buddies would stay there and drink all day playing cards.
The Hallet siblings might not have had a maternal grandfather, but they did have a maternal great grandpa.
He was a big part of their childhood, he taught all of them life lessons and other important things as they grew.
Birdie was the closest to both her Mamaw and Grandpa Wheeler, always watching old westerns and doing puzzles with them.
It broke her heart when her Great Grandfather died at the age of 96.
The hardest part being that she was in boot camp and couldn’t be excused to attend. Bo was her biggest shoulder to cry on and stayed with her until she wasn’t grieving as much. Heather and Phillip were there for her too when Bo couldn’t.
She didn’t know if she could go through the same thing again, but this time would be different, with someone she actually knew and saw and loved and grew up together.
Hailey was someone that Bird never thought that she’d have to out-live, with her being in the Navy, her life was constantly in danger.
It was beyond hard for her to think of a world where Hailey wasn’t just one phone call away if Bird had a bad day and needed her best friend to talk to or vice versa.
She’d never hear her voice again, never feel her warmth from a hug. What if Bird forgets Hailey’s voice or laugh? What if she hears a song or smell or memory that reminds her of Hailey and starts to cry?
Tumblr media
Bird for weeks would just do nothing but lay in her bed after work, sobbing and cuddling Ozzy until she had cried herself to sleep.
This worried Bay and Mickey, they had no idea what had happened in that phone call and started to fret over their friend’s health.
Mickey begged Bay to let him call Bob, he’d most likely be able to get her to open the door and talk, but Bay would shake her head and take Ozzy for his evening walk.
Every member of the squads came to the Garcia’s shack, talking through the wooden door as they sat on the ground.
Bay and Mickey talked to her the most, about what they did after work, how Ozzy did that day if he wasn’t in her room, and how much they miss seeing her bright and shiny smile.
What they didn’t know, was the hurt she felt in hearing them plead with her to come out. She just didn’t want to smile or do anything knowing that her best friend was gone.
Everything felt numb, lungs heavy and crushed, her friends’ voices sounded as if she was underwater. And all she wanted to do was breathe.
“Hey Angel,” he started breathlessly and searching for the right words, “I know. I got a text from your Ma, she’s worried about you. I am too, you’ve never been like this.”
There was a soft thud on the door where he put his forehead, “You’re the most happiest girl I know and I hate to see you like this. Hailey had been battling with her depression for years and I know that you did everything you could to help her, and you did, help her I mean. It might not seem like it right now, but…”
A long breath escaped his lungs, “You did what you were supposed to do, you were there for her when she needed you most and made sure she knew that you would listen to anything and everything she wanted to say.”
“Then why does it feel like I did nothing,” she whispered, voice scratchy from disuse as Bird laid her forehead against the door where she thought his was.
“Because you think you could’ve done more, could’ve saved her. Angel, babe, without you she probably would’ve lost that battle sooner than later. You showed her that you cared, that she mattered, that she had someone in her corner when it felt like no one else was.”
Birdie sniffled and took her head off of the door and for a minute or two it was completely silent.
“If I open this door, I just want you and Ozzy to come inside. I’m overwhelmed and need my boys. I’ll talk to the squads and Mama and Papa later.”
“If that's what you want Angel, I’ll go get Oz now.”
“Yes please.”
It took a few minutes for Bo to come back, but once he did, he knocked on the door with Ozzy right beside him.
“Thank you Robert.”
“For you, I’d do anything.” and a happy bark followed after by the fur baby sitting on her bed.
Tumblr media
All the members of the squads came over and talked to her through the closed door, all except for Bob.
He didn’t think that he’d have the right to comfort her right now, but after a text message from Birdie’s mama, he quickly understood what he had to do.
“Robert, please tell us our baby is okay?” “Mana’s not doin’ so good. What happened?” “Hailey.”
That one name and Bob knew, how couldn’t he. Robert didn’t tell the others, they had other worries and commitments to attend to.
He had kept it secret for a few days before Bay had finally had enough and cornered him in the hallway. “Robert James Floyd, I know that you know what’s up with Birdie, spill.”
“I can’t, it’s personal.”
“If it’s personal, then we should know so we can help!”
“That’s not how this works ok? You can’t just demand to know what everyone’s going through when it’s not your business, so butt out Baylie.”
Bo pushed through her and continued his way to the hangers where the others were, leaving Lucky stunned and slacked jawed by the balls he showed for calling her out as she stood in the empty hallway.
Maybe it was time that the real Robert showed his face and met the squad, but he’ll save that for another day. His Birdie needs him.
He came over to the Garcia’s little cottage after work and as Hangman walked out of the hallway where Bird’s room was, Bo pushed his way to the guest room.
Robert sat on the floor in silence for a minute or two, trying to come up with a plan to talk to her before he shook his head and started.
He knew that the squads were just down the hall and could listen in anytime they wanted, and would, because Birdie was family now.
Bo kept his voice just above a whisper and forehead glued to the sturdy wood door that was between them. Every answer he gave was unclear to anyone but the two.
The conversation went on for a while before he came back into the livingroom and stopped right in front of Ozzy.
“Hey Buddy, you miss me?” Bo chirps as he pets Ozzy’s head. Ozzy in return gives him some kisses, making Bo laugh.
“Yeah, I missed you too. Wanna go see your mama, she needs cuddles from her boys.”
Ozzy stretches as he gets up off of the couch and then jumps off and races towards Birdie’s bedroom door. Bo starts to get back up from kneeling position but is stopped by Baylie.
“She lost someone close to her, didn’t she?” Lucky had tears in her eyes at seeing her friend’s pain, just like she felt all those years ago when she lost her childhood friend Katie.
Bo didn’t answer, just nodded and before he turned into the hall, “I hope it’s okay if I stay the night. I don’t wanna leave her alone if I can.”
Bay nodded, “Stay as long as it takes to make Birdie happy again, if she needs anyone to talk to, tell her I’m here and I know her pain right now.”
Robert offered a small smile and continued to Bird’s room, once there Ozzy let out a happy bark as Bob opened the door and Oz jumped onto the bed and curled up next to his Mama’s torso.
Bo laid down next to her aswell, brushing away the new tears before they could fall. “I’ll be with you til the end of the line, Angel.”
she snuggled up to him and put her head on his chest, right above his heart so she could hear the beat and Bo ran his fingers through her knotted hair to calm her down.

Arms Wide Open, Catch Me If I Fall: Meet Amanda ‘Birdie’ Hallett
Tumblr media
Amanda ‘Birdie’ Hallett is a Naval Fighter Pilot, and could be described as friendly, generous, hard working, stubborn, hot headed, humorous, and never really serious unless needed. She is relaxed and both an introvert and extrovert. She also loves to read, paint, draw, and is a stress baker.
Bob was actually the one to give her the name ‘Birdie,’ while at the academy. Amanda was known around the building for always having a tune on her lips throughout the day. She was always humming, singing, or whispering lyrics to songs. Later, when they went on their first date, he asked about the singing. She said that it calmed her down and helped her focus better on assignments or procedures.
Birdie’s first dream was to be a livestock farmer, just like many generations before her, not a pilot. It changed the day a local Naval aviator walked through the auditorium doors for a speech in her senior year of high school. That talk had spoken to her heart and she just knew, she wanted to be a Navy Fighter Pilot. Later that year she graduated and was shipped off to basic, where she met a shy boy named Robert. They hit it off on the first day, hunched over by the waist as they tried to catch their breath from the morning jog that was mandatory.
They hung out almost every day from the beginning of basic to the end. The night before they got their first official orders, Robert asked Birdie out. After that, the new couple were inseparable. Robert and Birdie were so in love that even if it had only been a couple of months, it felt like eternity in each other’s arms. They had a tradition on every Sunday to stay in bed and watch movies all day as a way to wind down before going back to work.
Birdie might be a big hotshot pilot now, but she never strays too far from her roots. Born and raised on a mini farm for most of her life, she knew true freedom being able to roam the land and find adventures wherever her imagination or wandering feet took her. She’s known around the town as a ‘troublemaker’ for seeing the opportunity to do something reckless or stupid and jumping feet first. No questions, no thoughts.
After both being stationed together in Lemoore and a couple of years together, Bob proposed to her and they were in the middle of wedding planning when he received new orders to go back to Top Gun. Birdie was so supportive of Bob and tried to praise him, but he just pushed her away. He couldn’t go on an ‘urgent dangerous mission’ with her worried about him and couldn’t handle not being there for her if he were to die, so, he did the most reasonable thing: break her heart.
She cried for days afterwards, heartbroken to find out he didn’t really love her. Birdie tried to fight for the relationship not fully believing that was why he did it, but when Robert Floyd had his mind determined to something, he wouldn’t change his choice. Birdie took the time to dive into keeping busy. She tried different ways, but none worked in her favor. No matter what she did, she couldn’t forget about Robert and their love.
It was a month or two after he left that Birdie got the orders to go to San Diego, to be in a new squadron called the ‘Iron Daggers.’ She packed what she could and stored the other stuff in the time period they gave. Upon opening the door to her shared apartment, she heard squeals and rushed footsteps towards her. Phoenix, Halo, and Lucky gave Bird a group hug before leading her farther into the house.
The women in the squad had grown close just by spending one night together, it was as if it was fate that Birdie became friends with these amazing women. The next day when she got onto base, she was gonna get the surprise of a lifetime, being face to face with her ex.

After the big blow up with Bo, Bird walked to the Garcia’s with Ozzy following close behind.
Tears stained her cheeks as she made her way to her bedroom and cuddled with her dog.
She would go in tomorrow and talk with Cyclone about redacting the offer to join the team, if it wasn’t too late.
If Robert didn’t want her here, then she’s not gonna stick around to take anymore of his awful behavior.
He’s acting like he did the last week he was in Lemoore right before he broke her heart.
Bird was a forgiving person, but she didn’t know if she could forgive him for this.
She got up and started to pack everything but the essentials back up into the boxes, she’d ask for tape and help loading her truck tomorrow.
Ozzy kept trying to nip at her legs, telling her to stop.
But Bird’s mind was already set, as soon as she could she’d talk to the Air Boss and ask to be stationed back in Lemoore.
She was just finishing up her last box when Baylie and Mickey came home.
“Why are you packed? What happened between you and Bob?”questioned Lucky.
“He was an asshole and pretty much told me he didn’t want me here. I’m going to talk to Cyclone tomorrow about being transferred back to Flordia. I’m not staying somewhere where the only person I really know doesn’t want me to be.”
“Maybe he was just surprised to see you is all,” offered Mickey.
Bird laughed humorlessly, “Trust me Mickey, what he said wasn’t because of that. I mean, seriously! How stupid am I to come here thinking that he’d be happy to see me? He was right, I ruin everything.”
Tears prickled at her eyes as she fixes her glasses.
“Birdie, what do you mean?” insisted Lucky, teeth slightly grinding together.
“Hey, you haven’t ruined anything.” reassured Mickey.
“He said that the whole week before he left, said I ruined his life and everything I touch. I can’t do that to you guys too.”
“Bird, you haven’t ruined anything for us, if anything you’ve made our lives better.”
“How? I’ve done nothing but cause trouble since I got here!” she cried, taking her glasses off to clean them of tears.
Baylie pulls her into a hug and Mickey joins soon afterwards.
“Because you have made our grey outlook on Bob turn to color. We only knew him as the shy man he is, and now, we might be able to see an outgoing, sarcastic, and whatever else he’s hidden from us, man.”
“You just don’t know him well enough yet. He was shy when we first met at bootcamp.”
“Oh, we need to know all of the stories about the young Robert Floyd.” declared Lucky.
Ozzy ran over and decided to also join the group hug, giving everyone sloppy puppy-kisses all over their faces.
“Oz, Ozzy, ok, ok, thank you bubs!” laughed Birdie as she lightly pushed him away, fixing her glasses on her nose.
She sniffled and wiped her eyes, standing up in the process to head to her room.
“I best be gettin’ to bed, I gotta be up early to see Cyclone anyhow. Thank you both for everything.”
The couple gave smiles and bids her goodnight.
The next morning Bird does her morning routine, walks Ozzy, and drives to base earlier than necessary.
She’s trying to navigate her way to the Air Boss’s office when she accidentally bumps into someone.
“Oh I’m so sorry! Here lemme help you,” blurted Bird as she immediately gets to the ground and starts to pick up the scattered papers and folders.
The woman was olived skinned and dark brown curly haired.
“It’s not a problem, I can pick them up myself, I wasn’t watching where I was going anyway.” the woman laughed, holding her hand out towards Amanda.
“I’m Alana Metcalf, most people here call me Cinco or Cin. Are you new? I saw that you were looking a little lost.”
She took the woman’s outstretched hand and shook.
“I’m Amanda Hallett, callsign Birdie, but I also go by Bird. I’m not gonna lie, I am incredibly lost.” Bird laughed, cheeks burning a bright pink.
“Well maybe I can help, who are you looking for?”
“The Air Boss, Beau Simpson. I need to talk with him about transferring back to my old base.”
“Oh, did something happen? Not enjoying San Diego?” she asked.
“You could say that. I just don’t think it’s a good fit for me.”
“Ah, I see. An ex is here huh?”
Birdie’s eyes widen and jaw slacked, “How did you know that?”
“I’m kinda friends with Bob and the dagger squad. Actually, my boyfriend is on the team too.”
“Oh…” said Bird before she put on a fake smile, “what’s his name?”
Cinco could see through the smile, but decided to table that for later when she could speak to Bob.
“Jake Seresin, but his callsign is Hangman.”
“Sounds dangerous.”
“He is sometimes,” nodded Cin, “It’s because he always hangs his wingmen out to dry.”
“And he’s on a team? He sounds like he’s an ass. No offense!”
Cin laughs, “None taken, I know he can be one. He’s shown it many of times.”
The two women stopped infront of a wooden door with a name plate that read, ‘Simpson.’
“Anyway, here’s Cyclone’s office. I hope that you reconsider going back, I can tell that you will be a big part of our lives already.”
“And how can you tell, you just met me Cin.” Bird questioned jokingly.
“Because that man’s eyes still sparkle when you come up in conversation. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Bob like this and I can’t wait to see how it ends.”
“So, you know?” she asked, eyes casted down.
“No, but I don’t think I need to know more than that he loves you.”
“He might’ve before, but he doesn’t now. Thanks for being my guide, I appreciate it.”
Bird gave the woman a little wave as she knocked on the thick door, waiting for the ‘Come in.’
Once the command was given, she entered and saluted the Air Boss.
“You are relieved, Leutenant,” he declared, looking up briefly to see who was there.
“Hello Vice Admiral Simpson, I was wondering if it was too late to ask if the contract could be void and I could be stationed back in Lemoore?”
“Not liking the company Hallett? I believe at one point in your first time here, you were very close to Leutenant Floyd.”
“Yes sir, we were, but recently ended our relationship.”
“How sad. Unfortunately, Hallett, it’s already been cleared and recorded. You’re stuck here until farther notice.”
“But Sir-”
“I didn’t ask for excuses, Leutenant. Just be glad it’s only for six months. Now if your done,” He shifted his eyes to the door.
That was not the news Bird thought she would be getting, Cyclone never liked her anyway.
So why does he have to be so determined to keep her here?
Unless he thinks this will be torture for her being near Robert, which it most likely will be.
She exited the room, leaving his door open just to piss him off more.
Bird went down the hallway a little and braced her back on the wall, groaning loud.
“Well who do we have here?” a woman with a British accent asked.
“I’m sorry if I interrupted you ma’am, I’m Leutenant Hallett.”
“No harm done here, I was just having breakfast at my desk with my friend. I’m Rachael Kazansky.”
Bird looked at her phone screen, checking the time. The meeting with Cyclone went on longer than she initially thought.
“I am so sorry but, I have to get to the hanger. It was nice meeting you though!”
Dragon smiled as the blonde woman scurried off.
She arrived late, the high ranks already in the room and stood off to the side.
“Nice of you to finally join us Leutenant Hallett,” announced Cyclone.
“I’m so sorry, Cyclone! Someone told me to go to Hell, I couldn’t find it at first, but guess what? I finally found it! And I just knew I’d see you here too!”
“Everyone, this is Leutentant Amanda ‘Birdie’ Hallett, graduated second at Top Gun in her class.” stated Maverick, a wide smirk on his features.
Robert muttered a displeased, “Birdie.”
Laughter poorly covered up could be heard around the hanger, mostly by the students. When Bird looked over at Warlock, he winked at her with an amused smirk on his face too.
“Back on the agenda, Maverick.”
“We will be doing an exercise to start training for an upcoming mission. The hard deck is at ten thousand feet and will not be broken this time. We’ll take Hangman, Rooster, Coyote, and Birdie first. Get suited up.”
With that, we all filed out of the door and headed to the locker room.
“You must have a big pair of balls on you if you can sass Cyclone without hesitation.” said a tall, blond haired man with sea green eyes.
“Cyclone’s had it out for me since my first time at Top Gun. Bob and I got yelled at all the time by him.” Birdie said as she rolled her eyes.
“Wrong, you and Thena got yelled at and Smiley and me tried to get you out of it.” smiled Bob.
“Yeah right, like I don’t remember the reason you got your callsign. You are just as much of a troublemaker Bo.”
She didn’t see the smirks and looks exchanged by the others.
“Since y’all know my name, I think it’s only fair I know your’s.” stated Bird.
A dark skinned man with a mustache spoke first, “I’m Reuben Fitch, Payback and Fanboy’s pilot.”
The next was another dark skinned man, a little lighter in shade, “Javy Machado, Coyote.”
“I’m pretty well known everywhere I go. Jake Seresin, callsign; Hangman.”
“Wow, maybe you should take the dick outta your personality. Your ego isn’t as big as you think.”
“So what I’m hearing is that you think-”
“Finish that sentence, and I’ll sack you so hard that your grandkids will feel your pain.”
“Damn, she doesn't play.” said a man with a 70’s porn-stache.
“Damn straight, and you are?”
“Bradley Bradshaw, Rooster.” he held out his hand, which she gladly took.
“It’s nice to meet you Rooster.”
They all came to the doors that separated the locker rooms.
The women went into the one on the left, the guys on the right.
Bird was halfway out of her civilian clothes when a small, shy woman came up to her.
“Hi, I’m Raven Mouse Fischer. I haven’t been on the team very long, but if you need any help with anything, I’d be more than glad to help!” chirped Mouse with a wide smile.
“Thank you Mouse, I might have to take you up on that offer,”
“I’m Bob’s pilot, Natasha Phoenix Trace. It’s nice to meet you.”
“It’s nice to meet you too, Natasha. Thank you for keeping him safe when I couldn’t, I appreciate it more than you know.”
Phoenix was a little surprised when Bird brought her into a tight hug.
After the little meet and greet in the locker room, everyone was outside in the hanger getting ready to get in the jets.
Bird had her sky blue helmet on with the bird silhouette on the front with her callsign under and her squadron on the sides.
She wanted to have someone pat the top to ‘see if it works’ but didn’t want to ask anyone yet.
Bird saw Bo and looked away, there was no way she’d ask the man who had made a new crack in her heart not too long ago to do the preflight ritual with her.
“What’s wrong Bird?” asked Rooster as he stood by her plane.
“Nothin’, just missing old traditions we used to do before flying.”
“What did you do before?” he smiled, looking down at her.
“Used to smack the top of our helmets so we could ‘see if it was good’ and now I don’t have anyone to do that with.”
Without second thought, Rooster slapped his hand against the top of her helmet and whispered, “Good luck Bird. You don’t have to be scared to ask us to continue the traditions you did back in Lemoore, if they make you feel comfortable or a superstition you have we will help make you calm.”
Bird’s cheeks burned slightly, “Thank you Roos, I appreciate that.”
Bradley lightly pounds his fist on the top of her helmet again, “Anytime Bird. We’re all family now.”
She nods, looking away from him briefly before the other two men join them.
“Ready to fly Bird and Chicken?” asked Hangman, a smirk on his face.
“Yeah, Bagman, let’s get in the sky.”
It took a while but soon all were in the air with the oxygen masks on and communication was silent.
Bird was flanked by the men, all looking around for Maverick and seeing nothing.
“So what’s your story Birdie?”
“You don’t have to answer if you don’t wanna, Bird.”
“It’s fine. Grew up in the midwest, went to bootcamp and then after I graduated I went to Top Gun.”
“What about when you met Baby On Board?”
Rooster’s voice cracked through the radios, “Leave her alone, Bagman.
“Woah man, we’re just trying to get to know our fellow aviator Rooster.”
Bird rolled her eyes at the men, typical.
“I’ll leave that to Robert when the time comes and HE wants to tell you.”
“Ooooh, she’s super mad if she’s using your name and not your callsign huh Baby On Board?”
“Why do you always have to be a dickhead, Bagman?”
“I wouldn’t say ‘always,’ I did save your life Chicken.”
“He did,” echoed Coyote.
Rooster was quiet after that and started to go a little farther ahead of them.
They flew for a little longer in silence before Coyote voiced everyone’s concern, “Where’s Mav?”
All four of us looked around, not seeing anything. “Oh fuck, he’s under our noses.”
After that was said, Maverick came up from out of nowhere. “Good Afternoon Aviators.”
Bird was the first to move out of the way, Rooster following her and Hangman and Coyote breaking off to the left.
The fight was on.
It took twenty six minutes for Maverick to shoot all of us down.
If we were supposed to be the best of the best, how come it took so little time for him to beat us in a dog fight?
Bird got out of her jet, took off her helmet and then gripped it in her fist angrily. She knew she could be better than she performed today, otherwise she wouldn’t be back at Top Gun.
“Don’t let this bring you down, we all got our asses handed to us and I bet you everyone will today too.” Rooster shook her shoulders lightly and a smile on his face.
Hangman and Coyote came over to her plane again and praised her flying as they all made their way to the rec room where everyone else is.
Once inside the room and out of the blazing sun, she saw that Bob was still sitting right infront of the radio with eyebrows furrowed and bitting him lip.
What was he so worried about, he had no right to be for me. He lost it the day he broke my heart.
It was later in the day when everyone had failed and walking back to the locker rooms that everyone was talking and laughing together again.
“So Bird, would you like to go to the Hard Deck later?” asked Mickey, a smile on his face.
“No thank you, Mickey. I should unpack, I’m going to be here for a while.”
“Oh that’s great to hear, how long?” chirped Mouse.
“I’m here for six months, then wherever they send me afterwards.”
Lucky glares at Bob, angry at that he almost made her go away.
“We can help if you need?”
Bird smiled, “Thanks for the offer, but it won’t take too long.”
“Well if you end up needing help, don’t be afraid to call any of us.”
“She wouldn’t need you Bagman, Birdie has Mickey and me to help. Also stay away from my house or I’ll kick your ass.”
Jake put his arms up in mock surrender, eyes wide and a smirk on his lips.
Tumblr media
The three of them went back inside the Hard Deck and grabbed the others and went out back to talk on the deck.
Once all of the aviators had sat down, Bob took a deep breath.
“I think I might owe y’all an explanation on why I’ve been acting so short tempered lately.”
“I’d say.”
“Shut up, let him speak!”
“Yeah, I wanna hear why.”
“Well, before we left for the mission, I was engaged,” he took his dogtags out of his shirt and showed the ring.
A dainty little gold ring that looked as if it was sticks with small diamonds decorating it was on the chain.
“To an aviator named Birdie. I broke off the engagement and then moved to San Diego a week later.”
Bob ran his hands in his already messed up hair, “So when Lucky was giving hints as to who the new member was, she was just reminding me of her. I didn’t want to think about Bird, so instead I got angry and shut everyone out. I’m sorry.”
“Why? Why break up with her, she’s a pilot too. She’d understand.”
Bob laughed sadly, “Because I’m in idiot. I don’t really want to get into it tonight.”
“Hate to break it to you Baby On Board, but I already kinda knew. Seriously, I mean, did you forget that I have access to personal and personnel records?” sassed Cinco.
“I’m so glad that you found your forever Bob and I can’t wait to meet her! What’s she like? Chirped Mouse.
Baylie took point in answering this, “She’s amazing, beautiful, fantastic, lovely, smart, funny, sweet…”
“Okay, we get it Bay, if we weren’t married you’d marry bird and make her one of your sister wives.”
“Damn right I would, too bad I’m stuck with your ugly ass.”
“Ouch.”
“Can we please get back to the matter at hand?”
Bay shrugged while Mickey put his hands up in mock surrender.
“As you were saying Bob?”
“I messed up and broke up with her the harshed way possible so she wouldn’t think about me when I was on the mission. And with her back in my life I can’t help but have those feelings again.”
“So you never got over her?” questioned Phoenix, eyebrows furrowed.
Bob shook his head, “No. She’s my everything. I’ve known her since I was eighteen, we met on the first day of bootcamp. I knew by the end of our first date that I was gonna marry her.”
Dragon and Whiskey just screamed in happiness at the confession, they had never really heard Bob speak so passionately about love before and wanted nothing more than to hear everything he had to say.
Mouse was the first to speak, “That’s really sweet and I’m happy you found someone who makes you feel like that, but…” she took a deep breath, trying to find the right words that wouldn’t offend him, “If that’s true, why did you end things with her?”
Lucky stood behind Mouse, arms crossed and head nodding to the words that the shy woman had said and added. “You really are a dumb motherfucker aren’t you Robert?”
Tom and Ron exchanged glances before nodding in agreement with their pseudo daughters, only to get smacked by their wives in the back of the head.
The other guys had awkwardly chugged their drinks and avoided eye contact with Bob, not wanting to be caught and having to defend the man.
Rooster, that sap, was the one to speak first, “Do you still want to marry her? Just hearing what you have to say about Bird tells me that you aren’t over her yet.”
Bob answered immediately, “Of course I still want to be with her and marry Bird. I have no doubt in my mind that’s always been her in my heart and always will be.”
“Then we’ll do everything we can do to help you get her back. I don’t speak for everyone, just for me, but I want to see you happy and I get the feeling that the only person who can make you happy, is Birdie.”
Bob smiles, a sight the Dagger Squad hadn’t seen for a while, “She does, she really, really does make me happy.”
Hangman slaps a hand over Bob’s shoulders, “I’ll help you Baby On Board.”
One by one they come up and touch Bob’s shoulders or the top of his head, all agreeing with Jake.
He gave a half smile now that he knew his friends were going to help, he felt his chances of getting his Bird back rise.
Not too long after that the crowd became too much for his wandering mind, so he went home.
Tumblr media
The next day on base was awkward to say the least. He knew she was in San Diego, but what he didn’t know was when she would show up at Top Gun.
Maverick had already started the lesson with all of the high ups behind him and to the side.
There was a door being abruptly opened and everyone looked back as Vice Admiral Simpson spoke, “Nice of you to finally join us Lieutenant Hallett.”
She walked her way down the middle of the desks in the many rows that the other aviators sat at before she opened her mouth to no doubt sass the man.
“Birdie.” he whispered breathlessly, head casted down.
She sat down and the lesson went on while the others giggled or laughed behind hands or coughs.
Maverick picked four of us to go into the air for the first flight test and after a weird interaction in the hall to the locker rooms, everyone else crossed the tarmac and made their way in the break room.
Bob kept his sights on Bird the whole way, she glanced at him as she walked to her jet. He couldn’t get the thought out of his head. The happy memories that the two shared while back in Lemoore.
He missed the preflight ritual that they did, along with smiley and Athena. Bob gave a half-assed smile, but that didn’t last too long when he saw Bradley pat her on the head while she wore her helmet.
He can still remember the day that she got her helmet and designed it. Bird was so proud of herself, she hadn’t painted in years and was worried that it wouldn’t come out how she wanted.
Another great memory that he had made with her. Bob wasn’t really paying attention to the conversation from the radio, more on watching the sky and his Birdie fly like she belonged there.
When the exercise was over and the four pilots entered the recreation room, Bob’s focus came back into the world.
He was worried for her, he knew how taxing mentally it was to be called the best of the best, only to be shot down so quickly.
He knew that he had no right to be anxious about her. First this wasn’t a real mission, just a practice.
Secondly, she wasn’t his fiancee anymore, he held no claim to her. Especially after the way he acted the last week in Flordia.
Mickey patted his back as both got up and headed to the tarmac, pilots following their WSO’s, today was just going to be hard for him it seems.
After everyone had gone twice and shot down, both times, the day was over and everyone went to the locker room to change into civvies.
“So Bird, would you like to go to the Hard Deck later?” asked Mickey with a smile on his face as the group walked down the halls and to the parking lot.
“No thank you Mickey. I should unpack, I’m going to be here for a while.”
“Oh, that’s great to hear, how long?” chirped Mouse.
Bob was happy that she’d be staying, he really wanted to take the time and win her heart and trust back.
He felt Lucky’s anger through the glare she was giving him as they walked. Bob knew he deserved it ten times over.
Robert knew that once they heard the whole story, they’d hate him, Hell he hates himself still.
Bob rolled his eyes, he hates when Hangman’s ego acts up.
Tumblr media
They all go their separate ways and plan to meet up a little later at The Hard Deck for drinks.
When Bob got home he immediately collected clean clothes from his bedroom and then got into the shower to wash away the day.
He didn’t feel like wearing his Khakis today at the bar so he opted out for an old Carhartt shirt, jeans, and that trucker hat he loves so much but never really wears anymore.
Bob grabbed his keys to the old Chevy truck and drove to the local Navy bar. After he parked, he didn’t really want to go inside, he knew by the cars that everyone is here again.
With a large sigh, he turned off the truck and went through the doorway of the building.
Immediately Bob spotted his found family and threw himself on the cushioned booth seat, surrounded by the group and handed a cup of water that had already been on the table.
Silence wasn’t something that the Dagger Squad did often, but when it was, it's because they were thinking.
It brought warmth to his heart that they actually wanted to help him, but also worried him for when they realized just what type of man he was.
Even if he only did what he did to not break her heart more if he didn’t make it from the Uranium mission alive.
He knew it was only a matter of time before they either kicked his ass or never talked to him again.
Which he deserves, no doubt in his mind about that.
Lucky being the biggest threat if the story got out, she already saw Birdie as a little sister and is protective of her.
He’s seen Baylie’s rage and never wants to be on the receiving end of it, but that might just be what happens.
Dragon was the first to speak after the silence had stopped, “So, what are you thinking about doing to get her back?”
Bob shakes his head chuckling nervously, “Honestly Dragon, I don’t have a Goddamn clue, Amanda won’t even look at me for longer than a second and barely talked to me today.”
“Oh yeah ‘Bo,’ she barely talked to you.”
His head snaps to Lucky, anger in his eyes. “You can’t call me that.”
Bob knows that Baylie won’t back down and he wouldn’t be surprised if she probably already knows the story or at least a little bit of it.
“How bout Bam? Can I call you Bam?” she questions sarcastically, Bird obviously told Mickey and her something about his childhood.
“No and you never call me anything but Robert or Bobby so stop using Birdie to get under my skin.”
“Why when it clearly works so well.” she smirked, the others around him smirking too.
They were all very entertained by this and he didn’t like that just bringing up something about his past could get him so angry.
“Children.” demanded Cinco, done with the fighting.
“Anyway,” said Dragon, getting them back on topic, “we need to start small, so she doesn’t get suspicious of what we’re doing.”
They all nodded, agreeing with her. Now they just have to brain storm ideas until they find the best one for Bob to start gaining Bird’s trust and friendship again.
Some ideas that were thrown out didn’t sound like something that Bob would do, more of a Jake thing.
Big gestures and an exclamation of how sorry he is, Bob is more of the quiet type, small gestures and slowly gaining the relationship back the right way.
It took many hours and many rounds of beer and water (for himself) before the group decided on a plan and paid their tabs before going home.
Bob stopped Mickey as they exited the bar, his friend slowly turned around, a smile on his face.
“How is she doing? Is she settingly in nicely?”
The other wizzo lightly slaps his back,“She’s doing good Bob and I’m not gonna lie to you, because you're my friend, she seems sad. She’s putting on a happy act for us, but we can see it in her eyes. Bird keeps busy around the house when we get home from base. If she can’t find anything to clean, she’s either in her room or walking Ozzy.”
Bob smiles, “Birdie has two brothers so she was the only sibling to actually clean when asked and her room was her get away from her brothers who pestered her a lot. I’m worried about her, Mickey. I hate to see her like this, this girl has been nothing but smiles and rainbows and I don’t think I’ve seen her this way except the last night I was in Lemoore.”
“Hey man, like I said yesterday, we’re gonna help you get her back. This is the first time I’ve seen you smile since the wedding and if she can do that by just being in the same room as you or even just being mentioned, I think what you have is worth the it.”
Bob gave Mickey a little side hug before they went to their cars. Lucky was in the front seat of the Garcia’s Jeep, blasting music and headbanging to the lyrics, making the men laugh.
He took off towards his house, listening to her favorite song and smiling like a total idiot.

Arms May Be Wide Open, But The Brain Cells Aren’t There: #35
Dragon: pack your shit. We’re needed for a mission in Austr-
Lucky: uh that might be a problem bc I’m banned from Australia.
Birdie: wow, how embarrassing. Couldn’t be me.
Dragon: actually we’re going to Austria so it doesn’t matter.
Birdie: wait but I’m kinda banned from Austria.
Lucky: wait, what did you do to get banned from Austria?
Birdie: what did you do to get banned from Australia????
Dragon: I hate you both.
Tumblr media
Bob: why the h*ck am I so cold and why isn’t anyone snuggling me and why do grocery stores charge so much for small amounts of ice cream?
Jake: why did you censor the work ‘heck’?
Bob: bc it’s a fucking bad word.
Tumblr media
Lucky: it costs $400 to go see a therapist, it costs $0 to tell myself it be like that sometimes.
Cinco: *softly* no…
Tumblr media
Birdie: I have a question.
Slider: Shoot, kid.
Birdie: in the word scent is it the s or the c that’s silent?
Slider: fuck you. Im going to be thinking about this all day long.
Ice: okay, we’ll cent is pronounced the same way as scent so I’d say the S.
Birdie: but sent is pronounced the same way.
Slider: okay, Google says the c was added in the 17th century. So I guess the c is silent.
Bob: plot twist, both the s and c are silent and the letter e makes the sss sound.
Ice: Bob isn’t allowed to talk anymore.
Tumblr media
Spicy: *lying face-down on the bed*
Rooster: hey Gracie, are you okay?
Spicy: *muffled* I just need a bit of a break from everything… including existing.
Rooster: alright, if that’s what you want.
Rooster: *plops face-down on the bed next to Spicy*
Spicy: *looks up in confusion* what are you doing?
Rooster: *looks up at Spicy* I’m taking a break from existing with you :)
Spicy: *smiling softly* thank you B :)
[both of them lay face down in silence until Spicy feels better]
Tumblr media
Bob: *is away on a mission*
Birdie: *talking to Ozzy* I just miss Bo. Halloween was, like kind of our thing. Every year, we would dress up in cow onesies and egg Cyclone’s house…
Cyclone: that was you?!!
Birdie: Cyclone, please. We’re having a private conversation.
Tumblr media
[bob, bird, and roos on an undercover mission]
Rooster: *through the coms* I need you two to argue and pretend to hate each other until they leave.
Birdie: *through coms* what?
Bob: *through coms* why?
Rooster: *through coms* do it, it’s for a distraction.
Birdie: *to Bob* you are too awesome and smart! It’s frustrating!
Bob: me?! You are the- you are the most beautiful girl in the world!
Birdie: *pouts*
Rooster: *on a sigh, through the coms* why… why did that offend her?
Bob: *through the coms* I usually say ‘in the universe’.
Tumblr media
Mouse: how do people just stay motivated their entire lives? What drives you? I got out of bed once and I’ve been exhausted ever since.
Lucky: you need to learn to hate life to the point where you want revenge on existence itself.
The rest of the daggers: …
Birdie: *furiously taking notes*
Tumblr media
[family game night, playing scrabble]
Mouse: I will put down ‘a’ to make ‘a’
Lucky: I will add to your ‘a’ to make ‘at’
Birdie: I will add to your ‘at’ to make ‘rat’
Bob: I will add to your ‘rat’ to make ‘biostratigraphic’
Hangman: *flips table*
Tumblr media
Halo: you should treat spiders the same way you’d want to be treated.
Lucky: killed without hesitation.
Cinco: thrown out the window.
Spicy: screamed at.
Halo: no.
Mouse: left alone in the corner to sit in misery.
Phoenix: trapped in a jar to suffocate.
Birdie: drowned.
Halo: No!
Ice: Dragon, Whiskey, your kids are doing it again!

Whiskey: I give up! What are we?
Slider: we’re married Jade!
Tumblr media
Ice: okay, let’s go over this one more time… if you bite it and you die it’s poisonous. If it bites you and you die, it’s venomous. Got it?
Bob: I think so…
Fanboy: wait, I have a question! What if I bite it and it dies?
Payback: that means you’re poisonous.
Hangman: what if it bites itself and I die?
Phoenix: that’s voodoo.
Cinco: okay, but if it bites me and someone else dies?
Halo: *getting annoyed* that’s correlation, not causation.
Birdie: alright, and what if we bite each other and neither of us die?
Lucky: …that’s kinky.
Tumblr media
Ice: don’t say a word.
Lucky:…
Lucky: fergalicious.

Tumblr media
Lieutenant: Whiskey, Slider would like to have a word with you.
Whiskey: bring the bitch in.
Lieutenant: right away ma’am!
Slider: *walks in* did you just call me a bitch?
Whiskey: they can’t know I like-like you.
Slider:

Slider: Jade, we’re married???

Birdie: Bam, what would you say if I came home with five puppies?
Bob: what’s in the box?

Birdie: I think you know.

Mouse: I can’t wait to see my best friend again! He’s the bestest anyone could ask for!

Phoenix: don’t you dare.

Whiskey: I can’t, I can’t stop, Ron.
Slider: love, it’s not healthy, you can’t go on this way.
Whiskey: I know, I know! *sobs* it’s just so hard Ron! *throws herself into Slider’s arms*

[The canteen on base]
Fanboy: *eating lunch*
Lucky: *gasps at her phone and then slams it on the table*
Lucky: look at this!
Lucky: *points to the location on the Snapchat maps where it shows Bob & Birdie*
Fanboy: *panics*
Lucky: I seriously can’t believe that they would go to lunch without us!
Fanboy: *bangs his hands down on the table*
Fanboy: well you better go yell at her then.
Lucky: *sprints out of the canteen*
[at the restaurant in the bathroom]
Bob & Birdie: *making out*
Tumblr media
Interviewer: would you say that you are independent?
Hangman: *looks at coyote*
Coyote: *nods his head*
Hangman: yes
Tumblr media
Slider: Whiskey and I raised perfectly functional children.
Chaos babies: do you have other children we don’t know about?
Lucky: maybe some that you actually raised?
Tumblr media
Birdie: how long have y’all been married?
Whiskey: 132 years.
Lucky: how is that possible? You’re only 34 years old!
Whiskey: I count in dog years cause Ron’s a bitch.
Cinco: makes sense.
Tumblr media
Ice: hmm.
Slider: hmm?
Ice: hmm. hm.
Slider: hmm.

[on a phone call with the others who are very worried when they couldn’t find Mouse or Bird]
Dragon: Mouse, Bird, where are you exactly?
Mouse: we got lost.
Whiskey: yeah no shit sherlock. Can you tell me the street name?
Birdie: no, but there’s a cloud that looks like a lion.
Lucky: can you be more specific???
Mouse & Bird: simba.
Tumblr media
Dragon: *backing away slowly* don’t compliment me!
Ice: *looking at her in the eye* you are an amazing person, kind and caring, and you deserve happiness.
Dragon: *hissing* get aWaY FROM ME!!
Tumblr media
Cinco: I never understood why people cared about their stupid friends so much until I got stupid friends myself.
Lucky & Spicy: *sticking increasingly large and obvious things to Cyclone’s back*
Cinco: I would die for them.
Tumblr media
Payback: I’m sorry for breaking your glasses.
Bob: it’s okay. I’ve seen enough.
Tumblr media
Dragon: how does this shirt look on me?

Bird’s pov after hearing about Cinco’s baby daddy from the Wildest Dreams au by @mrsjaderogers (read first).
Please read Grace’s pov ( @gracespicybradshaw ) [second] & Baylie’s pov ( @bayisdying ) next before reading mine!
Tumblr media
When the news of who Samantha’s sperm donor was, bird saw red.
She was mad for a whole list of reasons, the main one being Jake ignoring Cinco in her time of need.
As soon as Whiskey had let it slip in the phone call with both Bob and Bird on the other end, Bird was going into the closet where all of the old sports equipment was from their youth.
“Angel, why do you have that bat?”
“I just wanna talk to him.”
“But why the bat?”
Birdie is already putting on her shoes and grabbing her keys when she replies.
“Don’t ask questions you already know the answer to Bo, you’re smarter than that.”
She glared at him briefly before rolling her eyes and walking out the door.
Bob grabs her waist, making her almost fall off the steps into the garage.
“You know that you can’t actually hurt him right?”
“Not with my fists, but a bat could help.”
Bird tried to take off again only to be stopped by the arm around her middle.
“Amanda, think about this. You could do hard time in county for this!”
“I would go to jail a hundred times over for Cin. She has been nothing but a God sent from the beginning!”
Bird uses her anger to break free from his grasp, finally making it down the steps and to her truck.
Bob was close to her steps, but did stop her on her path once again.
“Amanda seriously think this through. If he’s gonna be the asshole we all know he is, then leave it alone.”
She tries to pass him but he keeps blocking her from the truck.
“LEAVE IT ALONE?! Do you really think I’m going to let an asshat like him get away with this?”
“He’s probably already got Lucky and Spicy on his ass, he doesn’t need you too!”
Bird puts the bat against Bob’s chest, slightly putting pressure on it.
“For what he’s done to her, he can bet that all of the girls are coming for him. You have exactly two seconds to get out of my way or I take my bat and make you move.”
Bob sighs loudly and with his arms up in surrender, he lets her go.
Bird is in the driver’s seat and backing up before he can get his phone out.
As soon as the old Chevy is out of sight, dirt flying as she drives to Hangman’s house like a bat out of Hell, he calls the unexpecting man.

Arms May Be Wide Open, But The Brain Cells Aren’t There: #8
Birdie: when a woman says ‘what’ it’s not because she didn’t hear you. She’s giving you the chance to change what you said.
Lucky: wrong, she’s challenging you to have some balls and repeat it.
Tumblr media
Ice: alright everyone, pay attention. I have an announcement to make and I only have a minute.
Hangman: why? are you in a hurry?
Ice: no, I was referring to your short attention spans
Tumblr media
Lucky: I put the ‘laughter’ in manslaughter
Cinco: I put the ‘hot’ in psychotic
Mouse: I put the ‘meow’ in homeowner
Lucky & Cinco: …
Mouse: …
Mouse: what?
Tumblr media
Mouse: Omaha kissed me.
Birdie: NOOOO!
Lucky: Oh my God! Oh my God!
Mouse: It was unbelievable!
Cinco: okay, we want to hear everything. Lucky, get the wine. Mouse, does it end well, or do we need to get the tissues?
Mouse: Oh it ended very well.
Lucky: do not start without me! Do not start without me!
Cin: let’s hear about about the kiss. Was it like, a soft brush against your lips?
Birdie: or was it like a, you know, ‘I gotta have you now, kinda thing?
Mouse: well, at first it was really intense, you know? And then we just sort of sunk into it.
Lucky, Cin, and Birdie: ooooooooh!
[with the boys]
Omaha: so… then I kissed her.
Fritz: tongue?
Omaha: yeah.
Fritz: cool.
Tumblr media
Mouse: an unknown number keeps calling me. What should I tell them?
Lucky: answer with ‘this is Jade’s whore house. You got the dough, we got the hoe.’
Birdie: no! say ‘Ron’s sperm bank. You squeeze it, we freeze it. How may I help you?’
Cinco: or ‘Kazansky Morgue: you stab ‘em, we slab ‘em.’
Spicy: even better would be ‘Dragon’s crematorium. You kill ‘em, we grill ‘em. How May I direct your call?’
Ice: how about saying ‘hello’ like a normal fucking person??
Tumblr media
Ice: hey can I practice my proposal on you?
Slider: sure!
Ice: *gets on one knee* I know this is hard for you, but I love you… Will… Will you marry me?
Dragon: *arriving home with Whiskey* What’s up bitches?
Whiskey: …
D & W: I FUCKIN KNEW IT!!
Tumblr media
Mickey: I can’t believe that you two broke your bed!
Lucky: *winks at Birdie* it must have been getting pretty steamy in there
Birdie: *smirking* you could say that
[last night]
Bob: I bet you a chocolate cake that you won’t be able to reach the ceiling.
Birdie: game fuckin on! You don’t bet a Hallett!
[10 minutes later]
Bob: you broke the bed
Birdie: yes, but I touched the ceiling
Bob: you almost killed me in the process
Birdie: admittedly that would have been unfortunate, I wouldn’t of got the chocolate you promised me!
Tumblr media
Ice & Slider: *most of the time* badass, macho, very tuff guys, quiet, does not smile, kinda old, smart af.
Ice & Slider: *when Dragon & Whiskey are around* horny teenage boy, can’t stop smiling, actual teddy bears, softies, can’t even function properly bc all their thoughts are being focused on not letting their little soldiers salute.
Tumblr media
Whiskey: maybe the reason Auggie always tries to lick our skin is bc he knows there’s a bone inside…
Slider: that is by far the most scary thing you’ve ever said, never repeat that.

Bob: what?? Can I fucking help you?!
Mickey: *softly in awe* you just… ate that whole pizza in under three minutes, I don’t… how is that even possible, I-…
Tumblr media
Hangman: *writing in his diary* day 183. Im stuck in the middle of BFE, surrounded by creatures of all sorts of species, the likes of which I’ve never seen before. After months of thorough observation, I have concluded that-
Lucky: *to the tune of final countdown* ITS A MENTAL BREAKDOWN
Birdie: *off key kazoo*
Hangman:
Hangman: -there is no intelligent life here.
Tumblr media
Ice: where’s Lucky?
Cinco: *remembering that Lucky got her head stuck in a helmet after Ice told her to leave it alone and that she was supposed to cover for Spicy, Mouse, and Birdie as they frantically work together to free Lucky’s head from the helmet* Who’s Lucky?
Tumblr media
Kidnapper: we have your daughter.
Slider: I don’t have a daughter.
Kidnapper: then who is this annoying little blonde haired brat who won’t stop singing Jolene by Dolly Parton?
Slider: Oh. You have Birdie. No returnsies.
Kidnapper: but please.
Tumblr media
Mouse: I crave death.
Ice: but you’re a c h i l d!
Ice: You should crave s l e e p.
Mouse: and the souls of the innocent?
Ice: *vigorously throwing a blanket at Mousey* S L E E P.
Tumblr media
Mickey: *picking up his phone without looking* Hey Mi Reina, tell me something I wanna hear.
Bob: *deadpan* there’s been another mission nerd.
Tumblr media
Bob: is the equipment secure?
Birdie: check.
Bob: helmet on?
Birdie: check.
Bob: did you have breakfast?
Birdie: what? that’s not on the checklist.
Bob: I added it bc I care about you.
Birdie: no, I didn’t have breakfast.
Bob: unacceptable. Look in your bra.
Birdie: *pulling out granola bar* hey! theres little chocolate chips in this.
Bob: yeah, I’m not an idiot. I know how to trick my Angel into eating her fiber.
Tumblr media
Ice: guys can we just get this meeting started?
Ozzy: *barking*
Cin: let him speak
Lucky: let him speak
Birdie: whatever the baby has to say is more important than whatever you have to.
Tumblr media
Mouse: *whispering* psst Lucky.
Lucky: what?
Mouse: I made this friendship bracelet for you!!
Lucky: you know what, I’m not really a jewelry person.
Mouse: oh. well you don’t have to wear it-
Lucky: no I’m gonna wear it forever, back off.

Bird and Lucky text back and forth for the next couple of weeks as Baylie tries to get her a spot on the squad for a few months.
As for housing, Baylie is being incredibly generous and letting Bird stay with her and her husband, Mickey.
Birdie has tried to convince Lucky that she’s okay with just using on-base housing, but she wouldn’t hear any of it.
She had to pack her old Chevy with everything she and Ozzy'll need for the next six months while in Miramar.
As the days get closer to when they leave, Bird has mixed emotions, should she be nervous, scared, excited?
She really doesn’t know.
Most likely, Bird will start feeling excited, but the closer to Miramar, the more nervous and scared she’ll get.
Which isn’t good for Ozzy.
Ozzy, the best dog a girl could ask for, really understands her emotions and feels them too.
He wants to comfort her, but its kind of hard when she doesn’t even know what she’s feeling.
The days leading to the drive were chaotic to say the least.
Bird had to rush to get things done before she left and honestly, didn’t give herself enough time.
She had to put all of her things that aren’t coming with her into a storage unit and that took pretty much all week, she had to get her mail forwarded to the new address, and a bunch of other adult things.
Driving was the worst part in her opinion, the long hours of just sitting and trying to keep herself awake, even with five coffees in her system.
Ozzy, the cutie, just slept the whole time, making her very jealous.
When Bird finally arrived in San Diego and pulled into the Garcia’s driveway, Ozzy’s head lifted from the backseat and he started to bark as soon as he saw a woman, who Bird suspects is Lucky.
She got out of the car, trying to meet her half way in the middle, Oz follows her out of the driver’s seat soon after and runs up to Lucky to greet her with puppy-kisses before Bird can even shake her hand.
Lucky bends down and excepts the kisses, giving him scratches along his ears and back.
“Oh look at the good boy! What’s your name buddy, huh?”
“Ozzy, come here bub. Sorry about him, we were trying to teach him manners before everything happened, and its just slow going without his favorite trainer.”
“Oh, it’s not a problem. I love animals, dogs especially.”
Lucky smiles and wraps her into a tight hug, “It’s so nice to finally meet you in person.”
Lucky smiles and wraps her into a tight hug, “It’s so nice to finally meet you in person.”
Bird excepts the hug, “It’s so nice to meet you too, I can already tell we’re gonna be the best of friends! And thank you so much for letting us stay here, If you need any help around the house or anywhere, I’ll be more than happy to.”
“No, you're a guest, the only thing you're gonna do is relax. I can’t wait for the other girlies to meet you, I can just tell they’ll love you as much as I do.”

“The other girlies? Where I’m from, its mostly dudes. I’m more than happy to meet some more strong, confident, female pilots.”
Lucky leads her into the house, “Oh yeah, there’s so many female pilots at this base. We have Cinco, we call her Cin, then there’s Mama Dragon AND Mama Whiskey, who will adopt you immediately.”
The pair stops at the front door to open it, then once inside and in the kitchen, she continues.
“Spicy, a bartender at our bar, who is the actual love of my life, but unfortunately married Chicken and is currently carrying his babies. Mouse, she’s quiet but she’s awesome. There's also Phoenix, Bob’s front-seater, and just like Halo, she’s also a badass pilot and doesn’t take shit from anyone.”
“Oh wow, that’s so many people. I’m not really good at remembering things. Also, did you say Chicken?”
Lucky laughs loud and hard, “Yeah. We have an aviator here named Rooster, but we call him Chicken to make him mad. Don’t worry about names, it’ll get easier when you meet them.”
“Ok, I’d hate to accidently get a name wrong, I’ll probably annoy you with how much I ask who is who.”
“You’ll learn quickly, the girls and I are known as the Chaos Squad on and off of base. So you’ll hear our names yelled a bunch.”
“That sounds so fun, does Bo get into any of the shenanigans that y’all do here?” questioned Bird.
“No, mostly the guys stay out of the chaos, but sometimes we do get them involved.”
“I have a question about your husband, I know that when we were texting you kept switching between ‘Mickey’ and ‘Miguel.’ which do I call him?”
“Oh, well we all just call him either one. So it doesn’t really matter.” replied Lucky.
The two women didn’t hear the car drive up the driveway, they were too busy talking and learning about eachother, but Ozzy did.

The front door opened and a male voice boomed out, “Cariño, I’m home!”
A couple of seconds later, the barking started and Ozzy greeted the new friend at the door.
“Oh hey buddy! Lucky did you get a dog?”
“Ozzy! Come here bubba! Come on, leave him alone,” soon Ozzy left Mickey and raced to his owner.
Mickey followed the pooch and met the girls in the kitchen, where he finally saw the surprise that his wife had been so secretive about.
“Hello, I’m Miguel. Most people call me either Mickey or Fanboy. It’s nice to meet you.”
Bird held out her hand and his engulfed it, “It’s nice to meet you too Mickey, I’m Amanda Hallett. I have a lot of nicknames, so, I’ll just tell you my callsign, Birdie.”
“That’s a beautiful callsign, who gave it to you?” asked Lucky.
“Um, actually Bo did. I am always singing or humming songs, and I hate being caged, so Robert called me Birdie.”
“Why do you call him ‘Bo’? I don’t think I’ve ever heard him be called that.” questioned Mickey.
“I didn’t want to give him the usual nick names that ‘Robert’ goes by, so I just shorted ‘Robert’ to ‘Bo’. But I also call him ‘Bam.’”
“Bam?” the couple smirked.
“OH, that’s a story! I don’t know if I should be telling y’all this, But when Bo was a toddler, he had super blond hair, mostly white and he always carried a hammer around with him.”
She sat down in a nearby chair before continuing, “ He’d go around the house and hit things, and it just reminded his family so much of Bam-Bam from the Flintstones, that he was nicknamed Bam-Bam.”
“Oh my god! I will one hundred percent be using that to bother him while the paperwork is being filed this week.”
“Oh please do, also if you could, could you please hum ‘Heads Caroline, Tails California’? It’s my favorite and he knows it, I wanna make him sweat before we see each other again.”
“Mickey, I love her. I can’t wait for her to meet the Chaos Squad.”
Mickey rolls his eyes at his wife, “I will need something stronger than beer to get me through this if you introduce her to the other girls. You don’t need anymore chaotic females in our group of friends.”
“I know that that’s your opinion and you’re entitled to it, but babe, you're wrong.”
Bird covered her snicker at Lucky’s reply.
“Do you need help unloading your truck Bird?” questioned Mickey, ignoring his wife.
Birdie nodded, “That would be amazing, thank you Mickey.”
“It’s no problem, I know how tiring it is to drive long hours.”
All three went outside and for the next couple of hours, emptied Bird’s belongings from the back of her truck.
By the time they were done, it was nighttime and Lucky had ordered pizza and wings for everyone.
Ozzy whined and used his adorableness to get human food from the new people.
“Ozzy Samson Hallett-Floyd! We don’t beg at the table, go lay down.”
Begruduly, Ozzy hangs his head and goes to the living room, laying on the floor by the couch while the others eat peacefully.
When dinner was over Bird fed Oz with his dog food and once he was done, they took their nighttime walk.
After the walk had ended, Bird showered and put on an old bootcamp shirt and some black spandex to go to sleep.
She was just getting comfy in the bed, when she realized that Ozzy wasn’t in her room.
Birdie quietly went around the house and called, “Ozzy, Oz, come ‘er boy!”
She was just in the hallway, starting to enter the living room.
Mickey heard her, propped himself on his elbows and replied, “Your dog is in our room snuggling with my wife.”
“Oh, I’m so sorry Mickey! I’ll go get him.”
She turned to go when he stopped her, “It’s okay, Lucky’s been wanting a dog for a while, so this can get her off my case for a couple of weeks anyway.”
“But it’s your bed, you’ve been up for hours and you probably want to sleep in it more than sleep on the couch.”
Bird turned to move again, and Mickey could faintly see the letters on the back of the night shirt, ‘R. Floyd.’
Mickey shrugged, “Birdie, I’m fine on the couch, really. It’s no big deal to me where I sleep as long as I get a decent amount of hours.”
“If you’re really sure, then I’ll go to bed.”
“I’m more than sure Bird, go to bed. Goodnight.” smiled Mickey.
“Goodnight Mickey, thank you for letting me stay here with y’all. I appreciate it,” said Bird as she made her way back to the share bedroom in the Garcia house.
The next morning she slept in, then after her morning routine, took Ozzy on a morning walk.
Bird didn’t have to be on base for another couple of days and when she did, all she had to do was sign the papers to stay and join the squad for the upcoming months.
Since she had the time to relax, Bird took the day just walking around the town and spent a couple of hours on the beach with Ozzy playing fetch.
When Bird got home, well into the afternoon, She felt a little stressed about how reuniting with Bo will be, so she raided the Garcia’s pantry and got the ingredients for homemade brownies.
She didn’t pay attention to the clock, so it was a surprise to say the least when Mickey and Baylie arrived home.
Even with Ozzy’s barking.
“It smells delicious in here! What are you baking for Bird? We told you you didn’t have to do anything for us as a ‘Thank You’!” asked Lucky as she entered the kitchen.
“It’s homemade brownies. I should’ve probably told you before, but I’m a stress baker. I will pay you back for all of the ingredients I used up. I’m so sorry.”
Mickey waved her off, “It’s okay, Mi casa es tu casa.”
“I at least should’ve asked first-” she muttered under her breath, taking the dessert out of the oven and placing the pan on the stove top.
Lucky cuts her off, “Bird, seriously, its okay. We don’t mind sharing and its worth it ten times over if these brownies taste as good as they smell.”
“Well, we have to wait at least fifteen minutes for it to cool, but after you can have as many as y’all want.”
“I can just tell that us being friends will be the best thing ever, I mean, we have so much in common!”
Mickey knew where this was going and rolled his eyes, “Cariño.”
“We’re both from the Midwest, love dogs, chaotic as hell, you love to bake and I love eating! It’s a match made in heaven!”
Bird laughed, “I think our friendship will be very good too. I can tell that you love your friends with all of your heart and would do anything for them.”
As the trio waited for the brownies to cool, they started to watch a movie and talk about nothing and everything.
Ozzy began laying on her lap, but would look over at the couple and then give her puppy-dog eyes.
Bird whispered, “I know bub, I miss snuggling with him too. I think that Lucky would love for you to visit and snuggle with her.”
He took that as permission, and trotted over to the husband and wife, cuddling up close to Lucky, and laying his head on her lap.
Birdie sighed quietly and snuggled up in her borrowed blanket, mind wondering to Bo more than paying attention to the movie or conversation around her.
“Birdie…”
“Birb…”
“Bird…”
“Mana…”
“Amanda…”
She was too in her head, but was quickly snapped out of it when a pillow hit her in the side of the face.
“I’m sorry, what were y’all needin’?”
“Would you like a brownie?” asked Lucky, trying to get up with Ozzy still on her.
“Um, yeah. Thank you.”
“No problem! Miguel, go get us some brownies please.” she ordered her husband.
Mickey just rolled his eyes as he got up, grabbing a pillow and throwing it at Lucky before going to the kitchen.
“I’ll get you back for that!”
Bird gave a sad smile at the couple’s shenanigans, being reminded of all that Bo and her got into themselves.
“Bo and I used to be like that, we had nerf gun wars after work to settle who would do what chores.”
“That sounds so fun! Who had the best shot?” asked Mickey as he reentered the room and handed out the treats.
“I did, but I think he let me win to see me happy. He was always doing things just to see me smile. Whether that be being an idiot by making up words for a song, or starting random dance parties.”
“I’d love to see a carefree and goofy Robert Floyd.” commented Mickey, a smile on his face.
“Yeah, he’s never really anything but shy. Maybe a little sassy every once in a while, but other than that…” added Lucky.
Bird looked at them as if they had two heads instead of just one, “He hasn’t been sassy with y’all? I swear that boy always had a sarcastic comment on the tip of his tongue along with an apology for me when I got in trouble.”
“Really? Then it's gonna be so much more fun for us when you reunite with Bob! I can’t wait for his reaction,”
“Maybe we should let them have privacy when they reunite, Bay.”
She rolled her eyes, “But I wanna knowwwwww…”
“I agree with Mickey, I’d like some privacy when we talk. Like I’ve said before, we didn’t exactly end it very well and I don’t know what his reaction will be to me being in San Diego, let alone on the squad for a couple of months.”
The couple nodded their understanding, “We get that, and will let you guys have the house if you want it.”
“No, it’s okay. We can go out and talk, it would probably be better if we did anyway. Thank you though.” Bird grabbed Lucky’s hand in a friendly way, showing her thanks.
Tumblr media
Throughout the week, Bob was slowly getting more aggravated with the what he thinks are hints as to who the new member is.
Monday at lunch in the canteen as the squad was eating and talking bullshit, Lucky had her face stuck in her phone again, not paying one lick of attention to the talk.
“What are you doing there Lucky?” Bob questioned as he took a sip of coffee.
She glared at him, “Nunya fucking business.”
He holds up his hands defensively, “Wow, okay. It was just a question Luck.”
“Mi Corazón, why are you being rude to Bob?” asked Mickey.
“I’m in the middle of important business with a possible new squad member.” stated Lucky, aggravated at all of the questions thrown her way.
“New squad member?”
“Anyone we might know?”
“Which base are they coming from?”
“Are they any good?”
“Yes, a new member will be arriving soon, I don’t know if she’s any good, and I’m not telling, its a secret.”
Bob didn’t like the secrecy about the new member, especially if Lucky was the keeper of said secret.
She was known for being a little shit and would hold this information above their heads for as long as she could.
All day Bob’s gears had been moving, trying to figure out who this new member might be.
Usually Lucky would just tell them straight up who would be joinging and give them the basics about who they are as a pilot.
When Mouse joined the team, she told them pretty much everything she could so they would know her skill set and how to behave around her.
Bob had a hard time sleeping that night, mind too focused on putting the pieces together.
Which was beyond hard with the little she gave.
But what he didn’t know, was that he knew everything about her already and so much more than the others will ever know.
Tuesday, as they were getting ready for training, Lucky walked up to him and started a suspicious conversation.
“Hey, Bob do you like birds? I do, Snow Bunting, Indigo Bunting, Bald Eagles, House Sparrows, House Wren.”
Then She pretends to think a little more before she smiles and adds, “Oh and I can’t forget about Cardinals!”
“What made you think about birds Luck?”
“I woke up this morning and saw one outside my window today, pretty much all week too. Thought you would like to know, you know, as a bird lover.”
“I never said that I loved birds, I don’t think I’ve ever said anything about animals during the months we’ve been a team so far either.”
She shrugged, “You seemed like the type of person that liked birds, sorry for assuming.”
And then she just walked off, as if the conversation never happened at all.
The others were so confused as to why he had been in a sour again.
Every little thing pretty much set him off.
Maverick even had to take him aside and calm him down.
Wednesday was one of the worst days in his opinion.
He had been slowly getting more and more aggravated by the topics that Lucky had been using the last two days.
He didn’t want to be reminded of the terrible thing he did, and her bringing up these subjects, wasn’t helping him at all.
Wednesday, they were in the common room, bullshitting about their plans this weekend.
“Maybe I should take an early lunch and check on the pupper, whatcha think Mickey?”
“I think that the dog is fine, and you should eat during your lunch break and not go see the dog, because we both know you won’t be coming back afterwards.”
“Did y’all finally get that dog you wanted? Asked Rooster.
“No, we’re dogsitting for a friend while she’s out of town, I have pictures if y’all wanna see the pupper.”
The whole squad said ‘yes’ and we all crowded around her and her phone.
As soon as he saw that first picture, the color drained from his usually tan face.
That looked exactly like Ozzy and he could practically feel his heart break further and further the more pictures he saw.
But it couldn’t be, because Lucky nor Fanboy had ever met her before.
They couldn’t know about her, he kept her close to his heart and would never share her with the squad.
“He is so adorable and I love him so much. He’s been cuddling in the bed with me at night.”
“Wha… What… What’s his name?” he questioned, voice slightly wavering.
“Oh, it’s Hendrix. The friend is a huge Jimmie Hendrix fan.” she shrugged.
Bob was in his head the rest of the day, thinking about her.
‘Maybe I should contact her?’
But he didn’t, no what he did when he got home was grab the Jack Daniels and photos from his closet.
The next day, he was a little hungover and he could tell that the other’s saw that something big was bothering him.
They just didn’t know how to help him get out of this funk.
Thursday, was no better than the day before.
Bob seriously thought that he was either going crazy or that his conscience was playing tricks on his mind and he was associating everything with Bird now.
He was minding his own business walking down the hall when he passed by Lucky and stopped immediately.
She couldn’t be humming that song, he didn’t even think that Baylie knew it.
Sure, it’s a popular 90’s country song, but Luck hasn’t once mentioned that she liked that genre.
Yes, she’s midwestern, but after a while you forget the songs you grew up with and then you hear it once and it's stuck.
“Fuck…” Bob groaned, grabbing the attention of everyone on the squad.
“Baby On Board, did you just… curse?” asked Hangman.
The accused man just glared at him, “I’m an adult Hangman, I can curse whenever I want. Just because I usually don’t in front of y’all doesn’t mean that I can’t.”
“We never said that you couldn’t man,” commented Rooster.
All of the other aviators where more than surprised by his aggravated mood, except for Lucky and Mickey who couldn’t stop smirking at him.
“Why mad all of the sudden?”

“Yeah man, did you forget something?”
“We just wanna understand why your mad.”
“None of your business,” and with that, he walked off.
The squad looked around at each other, all wanting to know why, only to see Fanboy and Lucky’s smirks.
“What did you guy do to Baby On Board to get him in this sour mood?” questioned Phoenix.
“Nothing as far as I know, I was just humming a song.” she shrugged.
“What song?” asked Coyote, brows furrowed in thought.
“Just ‘Heads Carolina, Tails California,’ I haven’t heard it in years and now I can’t get it out of my head.”
“Maybe it reminds him of someone?” asked Payback, arms folded over his chest, looking around the squad.
“Maybe, but who?” voiced Rooster.
“We might never know, he isn’t exactly forthcoming of his life before moving here.” shrugged Mickey.
“He did get angry earlier this week when Lucky mentioned something about birds.”
“Why the hell would birds have put him in a bad mood?”
“Maybe he was attacked by one when he was younger and just hates them now?”
“Nah, because that doesn’t explain the song.”
“Unless it was an ex that loved birds and that song?” questioned Phoenix.
“So, what I’m hearing is that Baby On Board could have an ex. I didn’t think he could get a girl, so I’m just surprised that he has one.” voiced Hangman, but winced quickly afterwards.
“Don’t be rude! Not all men are players and assholes, Bagman.” she said as she smacked Hangman on the arm.
“Well geez Phoenix, we don’t really know the guy! He could be a player too!”
“I highly doubt that,” commented Payback.
“Yeah, have you met the man, he’s the sweetest!”
“Can you really say that if we don’t know anything about him?” stated Coyote.
“He’s never says anything about his life in Lemoore!” added Hangman.
“He’s a private person, we all have the right to keep some things to ourselves you know.”
“I know. But if it's bothering him this much, and taking his mind somewhere else while we’re training, I think we should get to know about it!”
“Leave it be, he’ll let us know when he’s ready.”
And on the fifth day, she finally rested.
Lucky had called in sick, if she really was, no one but her husband knew for sure.
Bob couldn’t be more happy that the antagonizing wouldn’t be happening today with Lucky gone.
He needed a day off from her and her hints.
But Bob did forget about the other part of the Garcia’s.
As the day started, he thought that Fanboy would be hinting every second he got, only to remember that Mickey isn’t like that.
The only thing that Fanboy did do, was smirk everytime he looked over at him.
Bob couldn't wait for the day to end and go home or maybe go to the beach to watch the waves.
When the work day was over, the guys grabbed and pushed him into the back of Rooster’s Bronco, and drove to the Hard Deck.
Once they arrived, they let him out and lead him into the bar.
“What are we drinking tonight Floyd, Jack’s or water?” questioned Rooster.
“I can order for myself, y’all just go to the back. I’ll be there soon.”
“Ok, but we’ll be keepin’ an eye on you,” added Mickey.
The other men went to join the others as they were at the pool tables, like usual.
“Hey Penny, can I get a water and peanuts?”
“Sure Bob,” she turned around and gathered his drink and snack.
“Could you do me a favor and put this on Hangman’s tab?”
Penny smirked, “Sure thing, out celebrating or he pissing you off?”
“Both, everyone is lately.” groaned Bob.
“I’m sorry to hear that, here you go.” she handed over his order and pats the bar.
He made his way to the back and sat in his chair, taking a sip of his water.
“Wanna play eight ball,” offered Rooster, holding a pool stick out for him to take.
Bob shook his head, “No thanks, I’m goin’ to finish these and then go on a walk.”
Rooster shrugged and asked someone else to play.
As soon as he was done, Bob wipes off the crumbs and sets the empty cups on the nearby table, and exits throught the back door.
When he was far enough away, Bob stopped in his spot and sat down.
Bob was just enjoying the view when he was pushed over in the sand and his glasses fling off his face.
“Ozzy! Oz, leave him alone! I’m so sorry sir, We were just playing fetch-”
That voice brought back everything he didn’t want to remember.
“Amanda?”
“Robert?”
“Wh…wha…what are you doing in San Diego?” he stuttered, Ozzy kissing his face.
“Um, your friend invited me. She said that you weren’t doing too good after the mission.”
Bob groaned, “That makes so much more sense why this week was Hell.”
Ozzy calmed down as soon as Robert started to pet and talk to him.
“They were giving you a lot of trouble?” she questioned, eyebrows furrowed.
“Yeah, I thought I was goin’ crazy with all of the hints Baylie was dropping.”
“That might’ve been partially my fault, I did tell her to hum my favorite song one day.”
“No, I couldn’t blame you for anything. Bay just likes to stir shit until it boils over.”
“Still, I’m sorry.”
“You never answered why your here.” he commented.
“Bay said that you weren’t doing so good and was worried about you. She said that it might help if I came down and cheered you up.”
Bob laughed, “Of course she did. I’m fine, you can go back to Lemoore now.”
“Actually I can’t, I signed a contract and I’m stationed here for the next six months,” Bird drew back as she waited for his reaction.
He just laughed again, this time more sarcastically, “That’s just fucking perferct ain’t it! I went away and now you follow me here? I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. I don’t care about you anymore Amanda. I left because of you and I thought you’d be smart enough to stay away. I guess not.”
“If this is how you’re gonna treat me while I’m here, then maybe I should just tell Cyclone that I change my mind.” she declared, tearing streaming down her face.
“Fine by me, I could care less about what you do.” he got up, dusted the sand off of himself, and stomped back to the bar.
Robert let the tears slide down his cheeks as he walked, he wouldn’t show her how much he missed her.
Not after the way he left things in Lemoore.
Once back at the Hard Deck, Bob grabbed Lucky and Mickey by the arms and dragged them to the parking lot.
The others saw that his face was flushed red with anger.
“I just saw someone that I haven’t seen for a while and I don’t want to see! You have no business interfering with my life, you should’ve kept it to yourselves.”
“You seemed really depressed Robert and I won’t appolize for being worried about my friend!”
“You haven’t been the same since we got home from the Uranium Mission, we were just trying to help!”
“I don’t need your help! If I did, I’d ask for it! And last time I checked, I never did!”
“How bout we all calm down and then have this conversation. It’s not a good idea to talk while angry.”
“No Mickey, he wants to talk here. Why so mad about her being here? What happened between you to that was so bad that your acting this way?!”
“I broke her heart, there. You happy? I got the orders to come back and I couldn’t leave her in Lemoore, so I did the one thing I thought would get her to stay away.”
“Why are you so stupid?”
“If you still love her, tell her! She’d say yes in a heartbeat.” stated Mickey.
“I…can’t not after all that I said to her. I was a total jackass towards her the last day in Flordia. I can’t even forgive myself, so how can I ask her too.” he muttered, head down and hands in hair.
“We can help get your girl back, just like y’all did for me when I almost lost Baylie.”
“But, to do so, we need to know what happened. All of the details.” added Lucky, nodding to her husband’s words.
“Robert, I saw the way you looked at that picture of you two on the tarmac.” Mickey grabs him by the shoulders, comfortingly.
“That’s true love, and I know that if you really love someone, its easy to forgive them for their mistakes.”
“Maybe she will.”
“Just have hope,” offered Lucky as she brought him into a hug.

Robert Floyd knew that the others had started to catch on to his pulling back.
He hadn’t exactly been subtle about it, as soon as the carrier brought them back to land was when he stopped hanging out with the squad.
Bob was like smoke in the wind, hard to find.
He was sitting in his apartment’s living room, looking at the old photographs that he kept of Bird, silently kicking himself when the doorbell rang.
Bob didn’t get up until the third time the visitor pressed the button, then he groaned and quickly stashed the photos in one of the books on his coffee table.
When he opened the door, he was surprised to see Mickey. It was a work night, and it was already 11:45.
With furrowed brows, he gestured for the other male to come in and into the living room as he closed the front door and followed.
Bob went to the kitchen as Mickey made himself at home, grabbing two beers and twisting the cap off before making his way back to the couch.
He stood frozen in his step as he saw what Mickey had in his hand, an old photo of himself and his Birdie.
He could remember the exact day that the photograph was taken.
A week after their first date, they were on the tarmac walking to their respective jets, when Bird jumped onto his back, ruffled his hair, and kissed his cheek obnoxiously.
The photo had captured the aftermath and the kiss.
Athena had printed two out the next day, saying that ‘it was just so cute not to save forever.’
Well jokes on her, the memory might be kept forever, but we ended up breaking each other’s hearts.
Mickey sat on the loved couch, flabbergasted and mouth opening and closing like a fish. “Bob, who’s this woman?”
The man in question sighed, sat down, and handed over the extra beer to his nerdy best friend, “That’s nobody special.”
“Seems pretty special to me companero,” muttered Mickey as he comforted his friend.
“Doesn’t matter anymore, We’re broken up.” he shrugged as he took a pull from his beer.
Mickey’s eyebrows shoot up towards his hairline, “I’m not gonna lie, we all thought that you hadn’t ever had a girlfriend, you’re very shy and reserved.”
Bob laughed, “Mick, I might be shy and reserved, but that doesn’t mean I can’t find love.”
“LOVE? Who are you and what have you done with my friend.”
“She brought out a different side of me. She was like a tornado, chaotic. But she was never afraid to take the next step even if she was scared and would take me with her on every adventure she went on.”
“She sounds amazing, I’m kinda mad I didn’t get to meet the other you or her.”
“You’d love her, she’s a nerd about The Avengers and Star Wars. We’d say the Han and Leia thing from Empire Strikes Back.”
“That’s awesome. I try to get Lucky to, but she just says ‘No,’ and walks away. She needs to realize that she married a nerd and this said nerd likes to quote movies to his loved one.”
“Mick, I hate to tell you this, but Lucky’s never gonna say that to you. She loves you, and absolutely knows your a nerd, I mean look at your helmet, it's in Star Trek font.”
He laughed and took a pull of his room temperature beer, “Yeah, I should’ve guessed that. It would be nice if once or twice to hear her quote a sci-fi movie to me its like dirty talk to me.”
“I didn’t need to know that.” Bob with furrowed brows and finishing off his bottle.
Mickey just shrugged and then finished his own beer.
Bob tipped his head at the empty and he got a nod from his friend and then walked to the kitchen for another round.
As soon as he left, Mickey took the photo out of the book and captured a picture of it to send to his unofficial FBI agent of a wife.
The two men talked for a while longer before Mickey had to leave to get home to Lucky.
They exchanged manly pats on the back as Mickey left.
Bob sat in his place on the couch again and took out the photos. He just couldn’t stop thinking about her as of late.
It might be because of his friends’ recent marriage, but he couldn’t know for sure.
He knew when he left that he had no right to think about her afterwards. Their relationship was ancient history.
Bob wasn’t proud in the way he ended it, the most awful way, making sure that she wouldn’t try to get back together if he survived the mission.
This seemed like this was his one hundredth mistake when it came to his relationship with Bird.
It not only hurt her, but him in the process.
Bob was in love and going to marry her someday, knew that as soon as their first date ended.
It was kind of funny to think that if he didn’t do what he did, they could both be in Miramar right now in his off-base housing, snuggling close with Ozzy inbetween them and watching a movie and eating junk food.
Bob missed the good morning kisses, breakfast eaten together, driving to base together, and so many other things that he and Bird did every day.
His days had gone boring since the relocation, sure he had made new friends, but its different without her here with him.
Bob tried to be more social, but it seemed impossible to come out of his shell with these new people he's come to know.
Most of the aviators for the uranium mission had an oversized ego that crashed with each other on a day to day basis.
Mostly Hangman and Rooster in the beginning, but now they have put aside their rivalry and became some what friendly towards one another.
Mickey and Natasha could possibly be the only actual friends that knows the most about him.
He doesn’t blame the others though, Bob’s a hard nut to break on personal information.
Tumblr media
The next day, he came to base with his face neutral and a cup holder full of to-go coffee for the squad.
Bob handed them out to each recipient and sat down in his normal spot, right by Phoenix but across from Mickey and Rueben.
The other nerdy Wizzo leaned into Bob’s space, whispering,“Hey man, I just wanna say that I’m sorry for showing up unannounced yesterday.”
He waved him off, “It’s fine Mick, no trouble. I was digging up bones that shouldn’t stayed buried.”
Fanboy gave him a look, “Are you sure? It was rude of me to do that.”
“I’m sure, no harm done. I needed to get outta my head anyway.”
He didn’t miss the way that Phoenix and Mickey shared a worried look at their friend’s mood.
Bob knew that the other’s were suspicious about his overnight shift in personality too.
As he scanned the room, In the front of the class, Lucky could be seen on her phone typing away rapidly.
Bob noted this and just thought that she was in the girls’ group chat ranting about something exciting that had happened the day prior.
Little did he know, she was on the internet and researching about the mystery lady that Mickey had found the picture of in Bob’s apartment yesterday.
Getting very little information about the female aviator.
Bob glanced at his phone, checking the time. Maverick’s late.
He takes a sip of his steaming coffee, only to wince and open the lid to cool it down faster.
“Hey Bob, you okay?”
“Yeah Nix, just burnt my tongue, I’ll be alright.” he spares her a small smile, which she returns.
Small sentences was all that he gave them anymore, and he could tell that they were getting tired of them quickly.
“You going to the Hard Deck tonight?” questioned Rooster.
“I don’t think so, I got chores to do around the house. Maybe next time.”
“You’ve blown us off the last five times, come on.” “Yeah, come on Bob. We miss you.”
He just shakes his head, “I’ve put it off for weeks now, It needs to be done tonight before I forget.”
“Then maybe we can help?” offered Payback. “Many hands make light work.” commented Mickey.
“Nah, its okay. It’s better if I just do it anyway. Thank you though,” finished Bob as he tried his coffee again, this time the perfect temperature.
Behind Bob, all around the other members of the squad looked at eachother and nodded, a plan already set in motion.
It wasn’t long afterwards that Maverick entered the hanger and walked to the front where the podium was. The flight lesson begins.
Bob was exhausted after the day they had, another stupid bet made with the Captain had all of the failing aviators doing another set of two hundred pushups thanks to Payback and Fanboy.
He drove home, took a shower, and ate dinner before he went to the spare room where the boxes that had his last bit of possessions from his shared house in Lemoore sat untouched.
Bob didn’t want to go through them, too many happy memories were woven into the objects that they held.
Too much hurt and tears also could be found in those stupid boxes.
He went to his kitchen and found his stash of Jack Daniels in the cupboard, took three large gulps and waited for the buzz to kick in before going back to the room.
A pair of scissors used as an opener, he cut the first box and pulled out the bear that he had won her at the county fair that they later named Chewy because of the resimbilence to the character.
Pictures of their relationship from the past four years, goofy and serious, had tears threatening his waterline.
The tie she bought him for the first Naval Award Dinner they went to and a shoebox full of old ticket stubs from all of their movie or concert dates.
Those alone could break his heart further than it already was, but he needed the fresh wound to sting.
The last thing he took out had him reaching for the bottle again, taking a drink equally as immense as the first two gulps, and brought the item out.
It was a vintage style Star Wars shirt he had owned since he was in High School.
Bob could remember every time she’d steal that shirt to sleep in when she missed him while he was over seas on a mission.
He shifted the shirt towards his nose and inhaled, her body soap still intertwined in the fabric.
This was the final crack in the dam, unshead tears falling quietly and onto the shirt.
Bob’s emotions changed quickly into anger as he reached for the bottle again, drinking a third in one sitting.
He hated himself for what he did, how could he not.
And like every old country song, he relied on alcohol to fix his mistakes. As if that would really help the situation and not bring him closer to self-destruction.
The next box didn’t help his mood.
He grabbed the letters that the couple had sent back and forth while they were deployed in different bases out of the box and started to open the envelopes one by one, reading every word.
Bob missed her little notes she’d leave all round the house, his locker, manual, helmet, and many other places.
The third box actually had him laughing, it carried some pillows and blankets, and something else.
On the bottom, there was the nerf gun and about half of the ammo that Bird had bought so they could have nerf gun wars to see who would cook dinner that night or did certain chores that neither of them liked to do.
It was a fun way to decide who did the tasks and a great way for them to take it easy after a hard day on base or in the air.
Bob stood with the toy in hand and put in on a shelf in the living room, this would be showcased and could be used on Mickey or anyone else that pissed him off.
With three of the five boxes emptied, Bob took the time to start and put some of the other things away.
He took the smaller items and put them into one box, found a sharpie and labeled it “memories,” and then put it in his closet.
The Star War shirt was put in the dirty clothes basket for him to wash the scent of her out of it once and for all. He couldn’t wear it again without the smell gone.
Bob went back and had another long swig before sitting back down and opening the second to last box.
Before he could, the doorbell rang. Distractly, he ran a hand through his already dishevled hair.
He chose to ignore the visitor, they’d leave if they thought he was asleep. The front room was dark and held no evidence that anyone was awake.
Looking at his watch, he read 10:57, about the time he usually went to sleep on a work day.
The knocking was persistent and getting louder as the seconds passed it seemed.
Groaning, Bob took one last pull of the Whiskey before making his way to the door. He didn’t look through the peephole, just swung the door open.
“Yes?” he grumbled, unaware of the worried faces his friends wore. He turned just a little and put the Daniel’s bottle on the counter closest to him.
“You said earlier that you had some chores to do, so we thought we’d stop by and see if you needed help anyway.”
“Like I said before, I’m fine. Almost done anyhow. Thanks for stopping by.” He said as he attempted to shut the door, only for Hangman to put his shoe in the way.
“Seriously Baby On Board, you were gonna slam the door on us?” smirked Hangman as the others make their way into the apartment, uninvited.
“I see you were visited by a good friend named Jack.” commented Lucky as she shook the bottle to show the others.
“I didn’t see this here yesterday, redecorating Bob?” questioned Mickey.
“I recently got some boxes filled with old things from a  friend back in Lemoore. If I’m stationed here permanently, I should probably make it look like I live here, don’t you think?”
“No need to get so defensive Robert,” “We’re just curious.”
“Anyway, where’s the boxes?” “None of your business, please just go home.”
“No can do, Robert. We’re not leaving until we at least help for a little while.”
“I can do it by myself, I am fully capable of opening boxes and putting shit away.”
“Not if you smell like a brewery, which you do, by the way. It’s not safe to be around sharp objects in your condition.”
“Then I’ll turn in for the night and finish it tomorrow, there is no more danger,” Bob rolled his eyes at his friends, “goodbye now.”
He started to walk back down the hall towards his bedroom and stopped after he closed the door, waiting to hear the front door do the same.
But it never did, no, the others acted as if this was their own house and roamed as they pleased.
It took a total of sixity seconds for Bob to panic that they’d find the boxes and go through them.
Their curiosity getting the best of them, or maybe the need to snoop around the shy Wizzo’s house to get to know him better was just too much to handle.
Bob walked out of the room silently and slowly made his way to the spare room, key in hand. As soon as he got to the door, it was too late.
They had stumbled across the boxes, more specifically the opened box with memorabilia from Bird and his relationship.
The one he’d yet seen for himself.
The breath that he had held is let go as he sees just clothes peaking out of the box. But of course, Phoenix is observant as ever.
“Why is the boxed labelled with female handwriting Bob?” this causes all of the other aviators to glance at the front and smile or smirk.
“That’s none of your business Natasha, and I believe that I asked y’all to leave.” declared Bob, anger running thin.
“Dude, we just wanna get to know you better what’s the matter with that?” questioned Coyote.
“I have some things that I’d like to keep quiet and knowing you lot, it won’t be. You need to respect my want for privacy.”
Lucky, who’s had her phone attached to her face all night, looks up and smirks.
“So, is this Bird a private matter or are we allowed to know about her?”
Bob’s eyebrows furrow jaw tightens, “Like I’ve repeated several times tonight, none of your business. Leave.”
This time, he followed them to the door, slammed it in their faces, to show just how mad he is, and locked the door by deadbolt.
He went to the opened box and saw the note that was left on top, “Even though you said you didn’t, just know that I meant it every time.”

Birdie’s day started how it always did, her arm reaching out to the other side of the bed to touch Bob, only to find nothing.
With that, she got up and did her morning routine, having breakfast, getting dressed, doing her hair, and brushing her teeth all before getting into her old Chevy and driving to base.
Athena, her best friend, waited at the front doors for her when she parked, holding a coffee and doughnut for herself.
“How you doing? Lucas and I have been worried about you lately.”
A fake smile shines through the exhaustion, “I’m fine. Just shipped the last of the boxes last week, he should be getting them soon. It just feels so real now. He’s really gone, Thena.”
The other woman turns and wraps her arms around her miserable friend, “I know Bird, I know. I’m sorry that he did that to you. I couldn’t believe it at first either, he was a good man.”
“I’m just flabbergasted about it, I thought we were happy together. What happened Thena, I thought we were each other’s soulmate.”
“Maybe you just wanted to believe that you were it for him, but he didn’t see it.” Thena rubbed Bird’s arms.
The women went to the locker room and changed into their flight suits, putting their electronics and other valuables in their individual lockers.
Before Bird could, her phone lit up with a notification from Facebook with a friend request.
She ignored it and turned her phone off, placing it in the locker and leaving the room, going to the hanger with Athena.
When the day was over, she showered, got the rest of her possessions from her locker, and left.
She made it home safely and ate dinner by herself in the living room, watching a Disney movie.
Bird was getting ready for bed as she looked at her phone screen again, remembering about the friend request.
She opened the app and checked out the woman’s who she didn’t recognized page.
‘Baylie ‘Lucky’ Garcia,’ it read and the newest photos showed her recent wedding with the love of her life, Mickey ‘Fanboy’ Garcia.
She scrolled through the posts and after a while, she saw a picture with Bob in the background, photobombing the couple with another dark haired women.
Bird felt the tears stream down her face, of course he’d move on so quick.
He already told her that he never loved her the same way she did. She had no right to feel this way towards him anymore.
Even if she had no contact with Bo anymore, doesn’t mean that she can’t see how he’s doing through his new friends.
So, with her mind made up, she pressed ‘accept’ and went to sleep.
The house felt odd without all of the things Bam left behind when he moved to San Diego.
But that wasn’t the right word, no. That would be empty.
The next morning she decided that it would be good for Ozzy to go on a walk, he’s missing Bo just as much as she was.
When the walk was over, Bird got ready for base and left shortly afterwards.
She stopped at a close-by bakery and ordered a large coffee and a chocolate muffin to go.
Once she had made it on base, Bird went to do her usual routine and ended up in the hanger with the other aviators.
She was happier than she had been in a while after her moring run with her pooch.
Athena noticed the difference in her appearance, and smiled. She was happy for her friend after the long dark period she had been through the last six months.
During lunch, Athena had finally asked about the mood change.
“So, Manny, why the good mood today?” she smirked as she chewed her bite of sandwich.
Bird just shrugged, “I don’t really know. I woke up and the smile was just there. The only thing that I did differently was take Oz on a morning walk instead of our evening walk.”
“It’s said to be better to workout during the morning than at night,” she nodded.
“Yeah, Oz loved it! He even found a cute little mushroom and I picked it.”
“That’s adorable, any pictures?”
Within seconds, Bird had her phone out of her pocket and swiped through her pictures to find the one from this morning.
What she didn’t anticipate, was being brought down memory lane as soon as she saw it again.
“What’s wrong? Did you accidently delete it again?” she asked as she leaned in to see the phone screen.
“No, it just reminded me of Bo. Remember when we went on the walk in basic and found a cute mushroom and I picked it for him, later that day he gave me a pretty rock.”
Athena’s hands settled on her shoulder, comforting her, “Hey, its okay to remember the good parts of the relationship sometimes. He hasn't been gone for very long, its okay to still think about him.”
“But that's the problem Thena! I don’t want to think about him anymore, I wanna be able to move on. I got a friend request from an aviator in San Diego and she’s in Bo’s new squadron. I even saw him photobombing her picture with another woman. What if he’s moved on already?” she ranted.
“Hey look, that San Diego aviator messaged you.” pointed out Thena.
“Hi, I’m sorry to bother you. My name is …” She quickly checked the time and realized that it was sent over an hour ago, and opened the app.
“Hi, I’m sorry to bother you. My name is Baylie, but my callsign is Lucky. I’m currently stationed at Top Gun as an instructor with someone I think you know. He’s not in a good shape, I don’t know what happened between you two but ever since my wedding he’s been… not Bob.”
The next text bubble read, “I love Bobby as a friend, but um he snapped at me the other day and it wasn’t joke. I don’t wike it.”
Bird couldn’t help but be curious as to why she was contacting her about Bo.
Lucky had told Bird that she didn’t know what happened between them. So how did she know about her?
Bird typed, “Hi Lucky, it’s nice to meet you! You’re not bothering me at all, I am a little curious about how you know about me though. Bo is a very private person about his personal life.”
Then she started a new message, “Bo has a temper but he usually keeps it handled unless someone pokes at him constantly. I’m sorry that he snapped at you, I hope that he calms down soon.”
The bubble with dots showed up quickly after the second message, “Well you see, none of us know how to behave, its why we work so well together and we broke into his house and found him drunk and crying over some pictures of you guys…”
Bird frowned, “Oh, I didn’t realize he was taking the breakup so hard. Was it Coors or Whiskey?”
“My best friend, Jack Daniels.” Bird winced, he was taking it very hard by the choice of drink.
“Please watch out for him, I don’t want him to go back to old ways.” pleaded Bird as she reread the message, concern heavy in her heart.
“I’m trying my best here.”
“I appreciate that you reached out to me concerning Bo. I would feel awful if he did something self-distructive.” Bird showed the messages to Thena.
“Oh shit, maybe you should reach out to him?”
“You know I can’t, I don’t wanna overwhelm him or for him to think that i’m coddling him.”
Athena just rolled her eyes, “Babe, Bob has loved you since the first day at bootcamp, six months apart won’t change that.”
“Thena, he said that he didn’t love me, never did. I should just leave him alone to live his life.”
“Look, she texted again!” both faces whipped to face the screen as the message popped up.
“How does a trip to San Diego sound? I can pull some strings and get you here. I think…I think it might be best if he sees you.”
Bird started to type an apology when Athena grabbed her phone, deleting the words and pressing send when she was finished.
“I’d like to see him too, we didn’t end it on the best of terms and i’d like to hear the reason on why he did what he did.”
Then she started a new message, “Thank you so much for reaching out to me Lucky, I appreciate it more than you’ll ever know.”
“Why would you do that! I don’t wanna see him yet!!” screamed Birdie, making the others around their table to look their way.
“Because Bird, you need to see him to know why he actually did it, he just said terrible things to you and left the next day. You need this, to move on.”
She rolled her eyes but ultimately, Thena was right. She did need this to move on from Bo.
Bird was still hung up on him and probably would be for longer than healthy if she didn’t get the closure she desperately needed.

After lunch it was back to the hanger and tarmac for training and then they’d go home.
Bird drove over to Athena and Lucas for dinner.
“Oh Lukey, Oh Lukey, I’m home.” bellowed Athena as she entered the house, Birdie close behind.
Lucas was in the kitchen, an apron on, and dinner on the stove cooling. As soon as Heather saw him, she pulled him into a kiss.
“Don’t mind me, I’ll just stand here awkwardly as my best friend kisses her fiance.” muttered Bird.
They ended the kiss, chuckling to each other. “Oh don’t be like that, Manny! Come on, gimme a hug. I haven't seen ya in a while.”
Bird rolled her eyes, but did as told anyways, “Two days isn’t a while, Luke.” “For you maybe, but for me it is.” he whined.
“Someone from San Diego contacted Bird about Bobby-Boy.”
“Oh yeah, what about ‘em?” questioned Lucas. “He ain’t doin’ so well at that new base.” shrugged Heather.
“Oh, what’s he drinking?” “Jack D’s.” commented Bird, absentmindly.
Lucas’ eyes went wide, “Oh shit! Yeah, I’d say he ain’t doing good if he’s gone straight to the whiskey.”
“That’s what Bird said to her. And guess what?” exclaimed Thena. “What babe.”
“No you have to guess.” whined Heather, giving him puppy-dog eyes.
Lucas rolled his eyes but humored her anyway, “He wants to speak with Manny?”
Heather’s face lit up, “How are you so good at guessing! That San Diego aviator, Lucky, said that she’d try and pull some strings and get Manny over to see him!”
“Do you really think that’s a good idea? You guys ended it pretty badly.” questioned Lucas, pointing his fork at her accusingly.
“I honestly don’t know, but Lucky said that she thought he would be better if he saw me.” shrugged Bird, taking a bite from her plate.
After she left Lucas and Heather’s house, Bird started thinking about her trip.
Like, what if she actually went and Bob wanted nothing to do with her. Would he be happy to see her after all these months apart?
How would he act? Would he be awkward or hateful towards her now that they broke up?
What if Lucky was wrong? And Bo doesn’t want to see her at all?
Questions like these swam in her mind as she tossed and turned in her bed as she tried to go to sleep.
Tomorrow Bird would start to get things ready for her trip, she didn’t really know how long she’d be in San Diego either.
She’d have to contact Lucky again and see if she’d actually be going to the base.
Bird was beyond nervous being around Bo again, especially when around new people that didn’t know what had happened in their relationship, not that it was any of the other’s business either.
She promised herself that she’d keep quiet about the messy ending as long as he did the same, which shouldn’t be difficult because Bo hated people digging into his personal life.
They didn’t know anything about her, they might not end up liking her at all.
She was a tornado, chaotic and wild, and most people couldn’t or wouldn’t deal with her energy.
What people don’t understand is that’s just her personality.
She just hoped that everything would be ok at San Diego.
Her biggest fear is that Robert will see her and afterwards, ignore her the rest of the trip.
