JANUARY 23, 2018

Charles and Y/N were headed to their friend's birthday party when they took the picture.

They had been dating for 7 months at that point and were definitely in the honeymoon stage, never being able to keep their hands to themselves.

While waiting for the elevator to get to their friend's floor, Y/N thought it would be a great time to take a picture for her iconic fit checks.

Charles knew what she was doing but decided to interrupt her anyway.

He wrapped his arm around her waist and kissed her cheek while she was taking her pictures making her let out a laugh. Charles smiled into her cheek hearing her laugh.

"Baby, you've gotta let me do this quick, we're almost there," Y/N said through her laughs.

"Let me be in one," he whined.

Charles had already amassed a small but dedicated fan base, causing him to keep many things to himself, his relationship included.

Y/N was a smaller influencer, but she also had a very dedicated fan base as well. They both decided they wanted to keep having their fun in private without any strangers looking into their relatively young relationship.

"Fine, but stand over there," Y/N sighed out with a smile.

She posted that picture on her story 15 minutes after her fit check causing many people to slide up and ask her who the mystery man was.

YOUR BIRTHDAY, 2021

The video was short, only 17 seconds long.

You could hear people talking in the background, utensils clinking against plates, but the main focus of the video was Charles' words toward Y/N.

"Look who it is, it's the birthday girl!" he said excitedly.

"Look how beautiful she is, the prettiest girl in the world," Charles' voice turned soft.

Y/N's face turned warm. She let a giant smile take over her face and let out a small giggle. She would never be used to the amount of compliments he gave her.

"I love you," Y/N said to him.

"Je t'aime, ma bonheur," he replied softly.

The camera was then angled towards the table like it was about to be turned off but it wasn't quite yet. Before the video ended you could hear the couple share a quick kiss before Y/n laughed, saying, "You're not posting that."

"Watch me."

AUGUST 2022

The trip to Italy was not planned.

Charles and Y/N were going to spend their break in their Monaco apartment but Charles decided to be spontaneous and surprised Y/N with a trip to Italy.

"Come on, it'll be fun. And we haven't been to Italy in a really long time," Charles said, trying his best to be convincing, but he knew the moment he brought it up she was on board.

"Fine," Y/N said, pretending like the decision bothered her.

"We're going to have so much fun," he said rushing to her, picking her up, and spinning her around causing her to let out a loud laugh.

Their trip was amazing.

They had incredible food and went to some of the best clubs. There wasn't a night where the couple stayed in, wanting to be out and about exploring every day

Halfway through their trip Pierre and Kika joined them. Y/N and Kika got close because their boyfriends were practically together all the time.

The first photo is from when the group went to a little party they were invited to by some people they met. Y/N and Charles were posing for a picture taken by Kika. They thought she was done taking it and leaned in closer to each other. They leaned in for a kiss but a flash going off stopped them.

"Sorry! You guys just looked so cute. Don't stop on my account," Kika said.

Charles and Y/N laughed before they shared a kiss. They took the phone back and looked through their pictures.

The second photo was again taken by Kika. The group of four were walking to a restaurant for dinner when the picture was taken.

Charles, ever so protective, wrapped his arm around Y/N's waist, guiding her the right way. Y/N, wanting to hold his hand, wrapped her arm around her back and grabbed his hand, interlacing their fingers.

Learning her lesson from last time, Kika turned the flash off and took the picture, not sending it to them until each couple said their goodnights and headed to bed.

MAY 12, 2022

Charles and Y/N were in New York after the Miami GP. They were celebrating Charles' P2.

Y/N had been to New York more times than Charles, so she thought she would take him to some of her favorite places in the city.

The whole night Charles had a hand on her at all times. Whether it was a hand around her waist or simply holding her hands. He was in a touchy mood and she noticed.

He kept asking her for kisses throughout the entire night, and she would be crazy to deny him. At one point he begged her to sneak into the bathroom with him so he could give her a proper kiss and not the small pecks she was giving him.

They were both aware that there were cameras on them all throughout the night but they couldn't find it in themselves to care. If anything it made Charles want to show even more affection. He wanted the world to know that the beautiful woman beside him was his.

I need to stop doing this to myself.

(A Rant Where Trae Has Written Too Many Books This Month)

So since most of you started following me because of Witchcraft or podcast stuff, I realize a lot of you don't know how much fiction writing I do.

Primarily what I've published are comics. The big one is UnCONventional (which ran from December of 2009 to December of 2019), but I also did a steampunk comic called The Chronicles of Crosarth (which I put on hiatus in like 2018 intending to come back to... but I haven't, and I make no guarantee that I will even though over 650 of the 800 planned pages are done). Crosarth is... fine? The art isn't great in either of these, but UnCONventional carries itself with the humor.

But that's all old stuff. You may be like "Trae, what have you been producing for the last four years," and the answer is "not a lot." I got major creative block with the pandemic. Peregrine Lake, the "Northwoods Gothic" comic I was supposed to launch in 2020 (which has some characters from UnCONventional in it) didn't materialize when I said it would. What storytelling energy I had went into Stormwood & Associates and The Meatgrinder (my two actual play podcasts), but that was it.

And then 2023 happened, and the juices started flowing again.

Peregrine Lake is moving forward -- but with me just doing the writing. My urge to draw has not returned, but my urge to write has. A friend of mine, Ethan Flanagan, is drawing it, and I've written the first year of comics. It likely won't launch any time soon (the artist I'm working with is busy as hell so we want to get a shit-ton of the comic done before we launch it -- we have like the first month and a half of the comic ready?). But yeah -- it's happening. I hoping for Spring, but we'll see.

The other thing though is that I've started writing, like, novels. I've always had like twenty ideas in my head, so I figured I'd give it a shot. I decided to start with the idea I cared the least about (in case I fucked it up): A queer urban fantasy story.

In the last month and a half I've written complete drafts of two different novels in this setting, and am halfway through another one... and have another one outlined.

I, uh, had some ideas.

If you're asking yourself "Hey Trae -- what the fuck? That's a lot" you need to know a few things that aren't obvious. At one point in college, in 72 hours, I produced over 40 pages of text between three research papers. All were for 300 level courses, and I may have disassociated while writing them because I frankly don't remember most of it. But, like, they were decent papers.

One of those papers is in Google Scholar.

Anyway, yeah. I haven't been sleeping great because I've been obsessively writing, but you might ask "Why didn't you just write one and get it ready to publish?" That's a great question. Because I wrote a book, and when I was 3/4 of the way through it I realized something very important: This book would make a great sequel to a book I haven't written. I've been writing book two in a series where I haven't written book one yet.

Well fuck.

So I finished that draft, and I went and wrote book one. Now that book? That book I'm getting ready to publish. I expect to have it out in January. Part of my editing process involves setting what I think is a completed, good, revised draft down for a couple of weeks and then returning to it with fresh eyes. We're in that waiting period right now.

But I still had a bunch of energy.

So the first thing I did was a revising draft on book two (the one I wrote first), but I finished that. And had more energy. And more stories in this setting kept popping up.

So I started a third book. And I'm halfway through the first draft of that book. But then I realized yesterday... shit, this isn't book three.

This is book four.

I need stuff to happen before we get to this story.

So now I've outlined the actual book three, and am working on literally both of these books at once (I'll take a break for Christmas and then go do a final edit on Book One).

And... I'm just like... why am I like this?

I need to stop myself for a few days and get more sleep.

Dime Novel Serialization Project FAQs

Based on a couple questions I received + trying to anticipate and preempt a few others, here's a brief Q&A:

What exactly does participation entail?

That's really up to you! Part of the beauty of this project is that the workingwomen I'm studying were avid readers, but they were also picky readers and busy readers. Sometimes a story didn't appeal and they walked away halfway through or never even began. Sometimes they missed installments in longer-form pieces and caught up when they had time or could afford to do so. They were still part of the reading community, though, and their responses to what they did read were no less valuable for the limitations.

That being said, if you feel so inclined to get fannish with it, I'm all about it!

When does this run?

I'll start posting chapter installments in time for January 15, 2024, then I'll drop a couple chapters weekly until we're through. If you want to join late, though, you can always access past materials on the Discord.

I'm worried about the period the lit is from. Is there content I should prepare myself for?

I'll add in some not quite author's notes, maybe we should call them compiler's notes, with each installment that you can take or leave, but I will say up front I have deliberately chosen a work that my students called "shockingly progressive" and "weirdly modern." The fun thing is that it's actually not! It's not that much of an outlier! But, for instance, while I've chosen a text of the "Old Western" genre set on the frontier, I have not chosen one rife with violence even though obviously settler colonial violence forms the unstated backdrop that enables these characters' presence on the land. The text I'll be serializing features a number of strong female characters and even characters who can quite easily and convincingly be read as queer and/or trans, to use modern terminology for established practices from the period.

What about accessibility?

I'll have a scanned PDF of the original manuscript for anyone who wants it, but I'm also currently hard at work in tying out an accessible text manuscript for anyone who needs or prefers that format!

In terms of readability, the language takes a few pages to get used to, but if you're able to read it aloud or slow down with it for the first chapter or two, my students have confirmed that it moves much more smoothly from then on out!

Opinion on the latest episode?

So, I watched it last night before I went to bed, woke up this morning and went through a whole busy day of work and literally just had a few minutes to sit down and think about it.

And you know what I came up with?

It was kind of weird, lol.

Not bad weird, not good weird...just weird.

I don't even quite know why I found it so weird, really. I thought the guest stars - Niki and George - were probably the best guests they've had on so far. They were both humorous without being rude/annoying/too much, they took it seriously and George, while somewhat skeptical, was very respectful in his skepticism and didn't belittle anything that was going on, they were both mostly calm and down to participate...I mean, who could ask for more?

I answered an ask about this earlier, but Niki and Colby's vibes really mesh up well, from a pseudo-psychic perspective (and before anyone has kittens - I am not even remotely hinting at some kind of weird shipping thing here. That is not the school I go to). I don't know why they had to be tied up in order to do what they do - methinks that was just Sam living out some kind of weird Sam fantasy that only Sam could explain to people (I'm kidding...maybe), but I think the energy they can create just works really well together.

I also found the whole thing at the end with the priestess and the Tarot reading very interesting, because of course I did. I find that stuff fascinating, lol.

But seriously? It is all well documented how Ashley (Pythian Priestess) gave them a ready back in January that was a) not good and b) came freakishly true, so when she sat down and gave them another reading for their next 6 months (which, this was filmed around Aug 6thish, meaning they are now almost halfway through their 6 month period here), I had good feelings that their reading was about as accurate as it could get.

And, are we allowed to point out that Sam got the fuck boy card? Or no?

I think what I found weird was just how many...rituals they jammed into this thing. "Hey, lets go sit in a Reynolds Wrap tent for no reason!" "Hey, now lets tie Niki and Colby up back to back like a couple of hostages!" "Ok, now we're gonna go downstairs and play the mirror picture game!" "Alright, now we're going to do a homemade Ouija Board followed by a homemade quasi-exorcism!"

Like, why?

Also, for their challenges...I have opinions on those (and I have asks about them, so I will get more in depth in the asks), but I guess my two main questions are:

Why was Sam so pressed about going in the basement, when he was quite content to run skipping down there by himself at 3am a few days prior?

Why did Colby decide to blindfold himself while he was alone in the woods by a bridge that he absolutely could've fallen off of? Sam never asked him to do that (unless I totally missed that part). Is he...you know...ok?

Overall, the challenges were fine. Sam's went on a little too long and included way too much of him spending the whole time thinking Colby was fucking with him while Colby was upstairs fully anticipating a cancelation and pre-apologizing to the fans for leaving Sam's ass in the basement in the first place. Colby's was just...weird. I just do not understand the point of the blindfold, or of Sam being on the Estes Method via phone. If Colby's blindfolded ass fell in the water and drowned, Sam wouldn't have known or have been able to help anyway, so what purpose did that serve, truly?

I know, they got to face their fears and do something spooky and that's fine and all...it was just weird.

At the end of the day, I found some parts of it really fun, some parts interesting, and some parts fucking weird. Overall, I'd give it a 6/10.

It's been an adventurous ride, for sure!

Books I Read In 2023, Part One

In January I decided I wanted to track my reading, as I usually don't really have a sense of how much I read per month or year. I don't like things like Goodreads, so I just jotted down the books I read and what I thought of them in my notes app. Now that we're halfway through the year, I thought I might share what I've read, and then in December I can add part 2. So, without further ado,

January

The Girl From The Sea by Molly Knox Ostertag. 3 stars, a bit slow but generally sweet and fun.

Jackalope Wives And Other Stories by T Kingfisher. 5 stars, every story slapped. would highly recommend if you like dark fairytales with a sense of humour.

February

started Helen Of Troy by Margaret George. I still haven't finished it (she is LONG) but i'm really enjoying it!

I Was Born For This by Alice Oseman. 4.5 stars, it was entertaining and emotional like all of Alice Oseman's books but i have to deduct a half a star for the main character (who is from the south) briefly assuming with no basis that being from north = transphobic and the narrative treating this as a rational assumption and not super bigoted and classist, like what the hell was that about? also via this interaction Alice Oseman managed to find yet another way to mention Durham in her books but this time i couldn't even go "yay i'm from there!" because now have this sense that she thinks i'm predisposed to transphobia because of where i'm from. i cannot stress this enough: what the fuck.

The Prince And The Dressmaker by Jen Wang. 5 stars, so heartwarming and i loved the art! I'm trying to get one of my friends to read it because I just know he'll relate.

The Lives Of The Saints by Leigh Bardugo. 3 stars, not really my jam but it adds another layer to her other books, which I really enjoy.

Fun Home by Alison Bechdel. 3 stars, made my head hurt at times because it's kinda convoluted, but still super interesting. the musical is great too. and before you mention it, yes, i am reading Dykes To Watch Out For, but it's not on the list because I just started it, and I will probably read the bulk of it and finish it in July so it will fall under there.

Lies We Sing To The Sea by Sarah Underwood. 3.5 stars, i'll be honest, i read this out of morbid curiosity and spite. it was a pretty average for a YA book really, not worth all the drama it stirred up in the classics community, but the end surprised me so it gets an extra half star.

A Fatal Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum: Murder In Ancient Rome by Emma Southon. 4 stars, really interesting and quite funny at times but i just don't really like the author's vibe. she's weirdly defensive of Caligula, just as she was in her book on Agrippina that i read last year. like yeah people make fun of him and exaggerate stories about him but he literally killed people, maybe he deserves it.

Messalina: A Story Of Empire, Slander And Adultery by Honor Cargill-Martin. 5 stars, super interesting and engaging, i never wanted to put it down! Messalina really did just girlboss too close to the sun.

I travelled this month so didn't have time for any other books, but I bought my own weight in them and will try to work through them.

June

Rain Hare by Anna Barker. 4 stars, a collection of short stories so a mixed bag. I really liked most of them, some even made me cry (to be precise, How Do I Feel About Lentils?, which does an excellent job of blending past and present to help the reader get into the confused mind of the narrator, who has Alzheimer's, and Tunny, wherein the twist hit me like a sack of bricks and all I could do was break down) but there was just one i didn't really like (Sea Glass, i just don't really vibe with the mentally ill narrator dying at the end and this being presented as what she wanted.)

Through The Woods by Emily Carroll. 3.5 stars, good horror, the art was great and the stories interesting, but they all felt like they ended just a bit too soon and therefore lost some of their impact.

Our Wives Under The Sea by Julia Armfield. 6 stars, yes, i'm straight up giving this 6 out of 5 stars because it was so so good! i devoured it in one day flat and loved it. the horror was atmospheric and gripping, the romance made my chest ache, and the ending absolutely devastated me, but in a good way.

so yeah, hopefully i can continue to get through my massive TBR pile in the coming months! and if you've read any of these books, please let me know what you think, I would love to talk about them!!

Hi!! If you don't mind me asking how did you get into wrestling/how do you keep up with it? Every time I see you post about it I'm reminded of my interest in it but severe lack of knowledge

hi!! i don't mind at all!! so, my answer here may not be too helpful, because i didn't decide to get into wrestling myself.

i've been watching since the day i was born (like no joke, i got here, forty minutes later smackdown came on and my parents had it on in the hospital room). for my entire life, i've been watching WWE with my parents. some of my earliest memories involve it, having it on in the background, asking questions, connecting with my mum and dad through their excitement at getting to give me answers.

the past few months have been the first time in my twenty-two years of existence that i've ever had to watch raw/sd without them, and that's only bc my parents' schedules have changed, and they aren't home in the evenings. (but even now, i'm still not watching alone, bc i accidentally got my best friend tiana @heartbreakfeelsogood into it, too, and we're having the time of our LIVES.)

but, even though i didn't get into it, the interest was just Given To Me, i do still have some advice for you if you wanna start watching (and i'm using WWE as my general example here, bc it's the biggest wrestling promotion in the world, and it's the one i watch most):

• wrestling isn't actually wrestling:

the match outcomes in pro wrestling are pre-determined, because it's not meant to be a legitimate competition; it's a vehicle for storytelling. it's a tv show about a wrestling show, closer to live theatre or a soap opera. it is still a sport, and the wrestlers are incredibly skilled athletes, and if something looks like it hurt really bad, It Fucking Did. but, they're fictional characters that exist halfway in their own universe and halfway in ours, who experience time at the same speed we do. you can watch them learn, grow, and change, in real time, for years, even decades.

wrestling is fake, and that causes people to brush it off as stupid. but wrestling being fake is exactly why it's good.

• there is no beginning, and there is no end:

wrestling never ends. ever. literally ever. monday night raw has aired every single week, without fail, since january of 1993. like it just never fucking stops.

because of that, there's no good place to start as a new fan. you just gotta dive in headfirst. WWE programming/commentary is very accommodating to new viewers, they take time to replay important segments you may have missed, and explain past events so you have context for what you're watching. anything else, google and youtube. if you wanna dig into wrestling history, there are some great video essayists on youtube who delve into it; my personal favourite is wrestling bios.

in the US, raw's on mondays @ 8pm EST on USA, and smackdown's on fridays @ 8pm EST on FOX. there's other wwe programming on thru the week, too, and all of it is also available on peacock. in canada, i have sportsnet for watching live, and the wwe network as well. if you're in another country, look it up and check. (i can give you my streaming site if you DM me, too, if you're respectably interested in 🏴‍☠️, but bear in mind that ripping WWE shit is Weirdly Fucking Tricky sometimes, bc capitalism is a prison.)

• pick one promotion, go from there:

there is so much fucking wrestling, it's super overwhelming, you genuinely cannot watch it all. WWE, AEW, NJPW, Impact, WOW, the list goes on and on and on and on. pick one company to start, branch out later if it piques your interest.

if you want sparknotes on shows you missed/shows from promotions you don't keep up with, there are a million review channels on youtube to recap them. i do that personally to know what's happening in AEW, bc i don't watch their stuff week-to-week. i like whatculture wrestling's ups and downs series, the host simon is incredibly positive and fun-loving, and it's great.

• remember it is not that serious, and a lot of the internet wrestling community doesn't know what fun is:

wrestling makes people mad sometimes. fans who are really deep into it/the backstage stuff, called marks/smarks, are the most fickle, bitchy group of people on the fucking planet. if you wanna interact with other wrestling fans, on any social media, just remember that you're allowed to have your opinions and they're allowed to have theirs, and just because they say a match/story/whatever is shitty doesn't mean it actually is. wrestling fans love complaining more than they love wrestling itself.

it's just like any other fandom; step in, look around, find your friends, hang out with them and don't bother with the bullshit. if wrestling's pissing you off more than it is entertaining you, you can take a break from it. it's just a show!

if you wanna watch, just start. you'll pick it all up as you go. i think it's the coolest form of storytelling there is, and i think you'll have fun. BE FREE!

ally!!! i have to say i keep growing ever so frustrated at ao3 as at the end of every update you so generously give us it reminds me once again that i am unable to leave you more kudos when i so wish i could spam you with it every five minutes to show my appreciation for these fics!!!!!!

the ducklings update was incredible and i so loved seeing an insight into fictional!george’s mind, i especially enjoyed how much a packet of shredded cheese caused so much trouble hah — whilst i am loving the angst between them, I am also very excited for them to (at some point) actually communicate with each other lol

i have to go on record to say that as a diehard lover of ‘you know where the city is’ that is the fic i voted for this week — this does not mean however that i am not very much eating up all discussions of the vampire fic (& the equestrian fic!!!) and i can’t wait to see what you come up with (on the discussion of vampires & twilight,, i was always team edward and the idea of vampire fictional!george??? amazing.) and I of course was very happy to receive a ducklings update regardless.

also!! these january prompts have been so good and it’s so cool that you’ve stuck with it the entire month — opening up tumblr and finding a little ally fictional!matty and george drabble has been so fun and u should know that they will be sorely missed come february!!!!

I was a little nervous about this chapter since we were changing things up a little bit with a Fictional!George-centric interlude and am so happy to hear that you liked it! We might have a little bit longer to go before Fictional!Matty and Fictional!George get it together and truly communicate but don't worry it is coming and I actually have a plan for it now (huge thank you to @sundrownsthehouse for helping establish DIRECTION for this fic!)

AHH thank you so much for supporting You Know Where the City Is as well!! The 2014-Disaster-Bi versions of Fictional!Matty and Fictional!Taylor are some of my favorite characters I've ever written, and I am so excited for y'all to see how their story unfolds! I will hopefully have that update finished soon, I've been slowly but steadily working on it since the last update!

Super long explanation about what happened with Sean that I recorded and then put into text

He and I met in September, we met at a debate competition. He was flirting with everyone there, including me. He said it was just for jokes, he's not looking for anything serious. He's not in a relationship, nothing like that. He's happy being single and blah, blah, blah, whatever bus ride back. He's like groping my thigh and he's like saying all this stuff flirting with me and I was like going along with it because I again thought it was just for jokes and I'm a very touchy touchy person. So like I didn't mind it and it wasn't until he got a little weird with it that I was really uncomfortable, but I didn't say anything because we were only like 10 minutes away from the school at that point. And I didn't want to make a big fuss or whatever for like 10 minutes. And then November rolls around. specifically November 21st rolls around. That date is important. and again, he's, he said he tells me, oh, nothing serious. Nothing like that. And it's freezing. It is freezing cold. I'm freezing. And again I'm a very touchy person. He said he's not in a relationship. Nothing serious. And I'm, I'm very touchy with my friends so I didn't think anything of it. And he's like, only flirting with me this time, only me and he's like, all over me and he's like, constantly, like touching me in some way or having his jacket wrapped around me or blah, blah, blah, something like that. I found out later that two of the friends that we met there were actually super uncomfortable with what happened. They were like, "yeah, I know you looked really uncomfortable" and I really was looking back. On the ride back. We had to sit in separate seats. Thank God. and then New Year rolls around. I get his number from a mutual friend. He's flirting with me all the time. I'm flirting back because I think it's like, I think we're joking and then he tells me at the end of January he goes, "oh ha ha. Yeah no, my girlfriend, like, you know, her math husband, like he asked her to be his Valentine and she said yes. And now they're a "couple". So I don't have anyone" and I was like, "oh, man, I didn't realize you had a girlfriend, like you never said anything". And he goes, "oh, yeah. No. Like, it's kind of new, you know, like, it's nothing like, it's like we're kind of new and whatever." And then he tells theme a few days later, he's like, "hey, do you have any plans for Valentine's Day?" And I said no. And he goes, "oh, maybe we could do something." I was like, "oh, are you asking me out?" He said yes. So we started going out, then I met his girlfriend and then I found out he had another girlfriend. They were in a polycule and I was like, oh, that, that's a little weird. Not super upsetting. I wish he had told me but, and they seemed cool with me. So they apparently knew about me. I just didn't know about them, which is like red flags all around but whatever. And then March rolls around. We go to the girlfriend's I previously mentioned math husband. We went to his birthday party. I only know him(ex), the friend and the two girlfriends. I only know them. And halfway through the party he turns to me and he's laughing and he goes, "I don't even know why we're together" and everyone looks at him like you did not just say that to your girlfriend.

And then so I left, upset, and then later I went over to the girlfriend's house and, her name's Roze, I went over to her house and I talked to her. I was like, this is, that was really shitty. Like I feel awful. And like, also I'm like, I feel really uncomfortable when he calls me his boyfriend and like only uses, he/him pronouns for me and like only uses masculine compliments. Like he never ever uses anything feminine for me. And she tells me, yeah, I know it's super weird that he is doing that. And then we called the other girlfriend and we kind of put everything together and I was like, hey, when did you guys get together? And then Rose, she told me they got together November 20th and I was like, what? And she goes, yeah. And I was like, he told me he wasn't in a relationship on November 21st and she goes "seriously?" and I said, "yeah". And then the other girlfriend on the phone, she chimes in, she goes, "he and I started going out in August!" and then we're all sitting there like, oh my God, this guy's a fucking asshole. He's been lying to us and then we're talking with the friend, the math husband or whatever. And he tells us that he's actually been faking his anemia issues and that he only uses a cane because he, like, wants sympathy from people. Like he wants people to think that he's disabled but he's not actually, and he's actually talked about how he's not actually disabled and how he wants an excuse to use the cane, which, like, you can just use a cane, like you don't have to be disabled to use one. It looks cool no matter what. And so that was just like the whole situation and that's pretty much what happened

Therapeutic Fandom Obsessions Round 2: ELECTRIC BUGALOO 🎉🎉 ...with some MAJOR edits lol

EDIT: oh what a fucking STORY THIS ONE IS. so. I had every intention in the universe of posting this in January like I did last year... but my partner at the time happened to read (as you'll see down below) the lil "life updates" section over my shoulder and THAT is how he found out I have been (still am??) questioning my gender identity.

It was not a conversation I was ready to have with him/ wanted to have with him (which maybe should have been a bigger red flag... BUT I DIGRESS), and it began a six month winding path to the collapse of our relationship. Was this the only thing? No. Did it, in conjunction with the fights we both had and weren't having (it was weird...), become what did us in in the end? Yeah. Little bit.

I was in a swirl of emotions from the time the conversation happened until the break up, and I'm still in a bit of a swirl now. But I'm doing better. Feeling more myself than I have in a while, and being forced to FEEL my emotions and not lean on/ focus on someone else's emotions (AND BOY HOWDY is my brain fucking LOUD without a good distraction). I've found some "good distractions" in the last six months, but mostly found joy the company of friends and their phenomenal support. I'll fill you in on all that nonsense next year (or in January because this is the halfway point lol) so stay tuned for part three! ;) But INDUDGE ME FRIENDS. Pretend we're still in January with my fandom recaps! And I hope you find some joy in my blast from the past xxx

Is it a little late to be posting a New Year's post? MAYBE. Did my partner come to visit and it took up all my attention because I missed him more that words could say??? ALSO MAYBE. lol

But I guess you can call this my official decision to make this an annual thing. *shrugs*

Well. What a fucking year. Somehow someway my mental health (are we even allowed to say that on here anymore???) has improved this year. Don't get me wrong. I'm still a hopeless insomniac, and you could practically set your calendar by the cycles of my seasonal depression. But somehow, in spite of all that, I've actually made strides toward feeling better.

MINI RECAP.

I moved to California to take care of my grandmother (and she managed to take care of me in ways I never expected).

I'm finally moving forward with a diagnosis (still up in the air on what the fuck is going on BUT HEY. PROGRESS).

Had an (ongoing) gender crisis that was NOT FUN to deal with so late in the game... but still glad it happened.

I found a job I really enjoy in a field I've always wanted to get in to.

And perhaps most importantly, I've reframed the way I think about from "getting better" to "feeling better." --- Said this last year, but I don't think whatever is going on upstairs is something I'll really ever truly "heal" from. But that doesn't mean I shouldn't try and make myself feel better.

And between the little ways (reframing my phrasing and thinking), to the much bigger shit (facing my fears around doctors, diagnoses, and medicine), I've made progress I can be proud of this year.

And perhaps my hyper fixations are only salve and bandaids on top of much bigger wounds, but they (AND THE BLESSED AND BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE THAT ENJOYED THEM WITH ME) helped me get through a tough year.

So I hope everyone that's reading this found some joy in 2021 and will find so much more of it in 2022. And hey, if you're looking for a rabbit hole to fall down in search of some dopamine... this list this always here, and I'm ALWAYS around to chat ;)

January 2021 -- Bungou Stray Dogs (Anime/Manga)

DAMN DANIEL BACK AT IT AGAIN???? (Did I just bring a vine reference into a post from 2021? Yes. Yes. I did.) but LORD IN HEAVEN, I'M BACK ON MY BULLSHIT.

STORYTIME. In November of last year, I managed to drag @idancewiththefairies down the anime rabbit hole with me and she wanted some recommendations for Top Tier shows after finishing Yuri!!! On Ice. I tossed Bungou Stray Dogs in her general direction and the rest is history.

HOLY HELL did my fandom obsession come back with a burning passion. The flame was FULLY reignited and I'm so glad it was.

Obsession peaked: I *THOUGHT* it peaked in 2020, but that was NOTHING compared to January 2021.

'The Shinigami' by @cataclysmicevent2019 -- Supernatural Yakuza AU. She was already the unprecedented QUEEN of BSD and Soukoku fics in my mind and had earned my undying loyalty... AND HOLY HELL THIS FIC just reinforced that even more. Desperately waiting for this one to finish updating.

'Always Yours' by @cataclysmicevent2019 -- ABO period piece with arranged marriage(s). God bless Rachel and her eternal undying patience to put up with me as she waited a million fucking years for me to finish this fic. AAAAAHHHHHHHH. HOW DID YOU DO THAT??? oh man oh man oh man. This fic is a DOOZY. Lures you in with a false sense of security and then breaks your fucking neck with chapter 6. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED AND YOU WILL LOVE IT.

Favourite moments:

Pacing back and forth in my aunt's garden (and getting a nasty sunburn) for hours voice noting with Rachel around fan theories and fanfiction recs.

Finally getting in to the manga -- and boy HOWDY did I REALLY get in to it (RIP my wallet).

Commissioning one of my favourite artists to do a piece for one of my favourite fanfics -- THIS MASTERPIECE if you haven't seen it already.

March 2021 -- Violet Evergarden (Anime/Movie)

Full disclosure. I don't cry at movies. I just don't. Honestly wish I could, you all make it sound so therapeutic. BUT THIS SHOW. oooooOOOOHHHHOO LORD. THIS FUCKING SHOW. TO SAY I WAS UNPREPARED FOR HOW THIS WAS GONNA MAKE ME FEEL IS THE UNDERSTATEMENT OF THE YEAR.

Violet Evergarden had been floating through my Netflix recommendations for nearly two years by the time I decided to pick it up this past March. BRILLIANT DECISION this is one of those shows that is FULLY worth the hype.

And KYO ANI, stunningly gorgeous as always. Watching any one of their beautifully animated shows from pre-arson attack days is always tinged with a touch of melancholy, but it is nice to think the animators live on through their art if even in a small way.

Go watch it if you haven't; the message is timeless, the world building and character development are both stunning, with an art style that is simply out of this world.

March 2021 -- Figure Skating (Sport)

At the risk of this list becoming just the same as 2020's recap... here is the SECOND fandom to make a reappearance!

I don't think my love for this sport is ever really going to dwindle or die, but it certainly has had its moments when it's shone brighter and March 2021 was definitely one of them.

I got myself up at ASS CRACK O'CLOCK in the morning on the day of worlds (and then again like three weeks later for WTT) to scream in silence as the sun came up and I FREAKED OUT ABOUT THAT RESULT (hooooLEEEE MOTHER I did NOT see that one coming).

April 2021 -- Demon Slayer (Anime/Movie)

Sandra my dear. I should never doubt your recs (and yet somehow I'm still dragging my feet on FMAB...) BUT THIS TIME. I ACTUALLY TOOK YOUR ADVICE IN A TIMELY FASHION. Best decision of 2021.

OOOOOH THE ANGST. OOOOOOOOOH THE ANIMATION (!!!). I was not prepared for how this show was gonna fucking WRECK me. Walked into it thinking, "hmmm, monster-of-the-week-shounen. how bad could it be?"

BAD. VERY BAD. SO VERY BAD. but also SOOOO FUCKING GOOD. If season two and Mugen Train haven't made you hop on the bandwagon at this point idk what will. But believe me when I say this is FAR from your run-of-the-mill action/monster shounen.

May 2021 -- Fruits Basket (Anime)

oh my babies how i've fucking missed you... WAY BACK IN THE YESTERYEAR OF THE ANIME DARK AGES (lol) when your lil bean was just getting in to anime, this title came up CONSTANTLY on "must watch lists." And while I feel like I eventually learned the plot through osmosis without ever sitting down to watch the full thing.

FAST FORWARD TO MARCH OF 2021. I am hit by the sudden unexplained urge to fucking RAWDOG one of the most traumatic scenes in shojo anime (perhaps all of anime) with no build-up, no foreplay. Yes, season 1, episode 24 (WHAT THE FUCK WAS I THINKING???)

FAST FORWARD AGAIN TO LATE APRIL OF 2021. I am pulled head-fucking-first into the orbit of a fandom I'd been skating around for nearly a decade and I have ZERO regrets. The anime broke my heart and put it back together again all at once, a GORGEOUS and fitting end to the Furuba saga.

Joined the fandom: idk brah... somewhere in my past??? Feels like I was kind of always there in some way.

Obsession peaked: May 2021. I could not fucking shut up about it.

Fanfics you NEED to read:

'I'll Be Standing By You' by Eboni -- Cancer Death Fic. OHHHH MAAAAAN. I read the tags. I often actively CHOOSE death fics. I knew what I was getting in to. *inhale* BUT HOLY HELL THIS HURTS LIKE A BITCH. Told almost exclusively from Yuki's POV, this stunning portrayal of the Sohma family faced the impossible and impending reality of Tohru's death fucking was so unbelievably good. If you're brave enough, READ IT.

'Another Banquet?' by SailorSong -- Future Fic, One-shot. Sweet future fic, largely canon compliant and some pseudo-angsty banter between Kyo and Yuki that warmed my cold dead heart.

Favourite moments:

Losing my fucking MARBLES with Yuki and Kyo's backstories in season 2, part 2 (THE ANGST. THE HAT. THEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN FRIENDS. I WILL NEVER GET OVER IT.)

Yuki and Kyo FINALLY having it out when the truth is revealed in season 3. ("Me!? I was jealous of you!" OH LORD SAVE ME. NOW I will never get over it EVEN MORE.)

June 2021 -- The Case Study of Vanitas (Manga)

Ass-kicking bisexuals. That's it. That's the whole show. Well... not the whole show, but a sizable portion gives off the *vibe* ya know? ;)

This was one of the first times I started with the manga rather than waiting for the anime. holy fuck I'm so glad I was impatient. Both Jun Mochizuki's art style and the story itself are so stunning (and the manga covers are just breathtaking so I recommend picking them up if you get the chance).

I specify with this series that I've only really become invested in the manga because despite the anime coming out around the same time, I've really had trouble sinking my teeth (heh. vampires. teeth.) into for some reason. I think the truth lies in the manga itself; the anime is very true to the manga but both are pretty slow in the beginning. Other than a very sneaky plot point revealed at the end of episode one (and chapter one) it does drag for the first couple of chapters, and THEN takes off like a shot. For people looking to get into either version KEEP GOING, it is soooo worth it. But even I will admit it *is* a slow start.

HOOOOOOEEEE BOIIIII. Idk what I was expecting y'all but there was WAAAAAY more angst than I prepared for. HOLY FUCK. The Yuki plotline??? THE MOVIE?????

Playing a game of "musical chairs" with different Barnes & Noble locations trying to find the later volumes during a paper shortage... (idk if this counts as a "fave" moment, but it was sure memorable).

August 2021 -- Free! Iwatobi Swim Club (Anime/Movie)

Lord in heaven, I have never been so late to the party. To be honest, it shocks even me that I jumped on the Yuri On Ice train before paying dues to its Queer-Subtext-So-Overt-It-Stops-Being-Subtext older sibling show. (Literally this show is the sports anime equivalent of, "This bitch walked, she fucking strutted that runway mama, so that PEPPA. COULD. RUUUUUUN!!") But hey, better (EIGHT YEARS) later than never.

OH MAN. I did not count of how much these boys would fucking crush my heart. As a former competitive high school and recruited college athlete (shocking I know lol), this hit me in the feels WAAAAY harder than I was expecting. The subtle undercurrent of pressure and angst (tied together with a fucking BRILLIANT voice cast) made the show feel more real, and completely addicting to watch.

So if somehow you have managed to avoid this gem over the last decade, and are looking for a high school sports anime that is angstier than Haikyuu (I'm sorry Haikyuu fans please don't kill me xD) THIS is the perfect place to go.

Joined the fandom: July or August of 2021. Harder to pin this one down bc I spent months TALKING about picking up this show without ever actually DOING it.

Obsession peaked: September-ish? But tbh still going strong. This show has quickly snuck up into my favourites list.

Fandom friends: Rachel... FINISH SEASON TWO DAMMIT.

Fanfics you NEED to read:

'Coral and Bone' by @macbetha -- Mermaid AU. this fucking fic... Honestly? I don't know why I started reading it. I'm not normally a fan of the mermaid AU, but MAAAAAAN. This fic had me eating my fucking WORDS. I normally need to be hyper focused when reading, but I simply could not put this down. I was RAVENOUSLY reading it on a ten hour noisy AirFrance flight, and it felt like I was alone (and sobbing) in my own little world. ALSO Makoto and Haru may be the main couple... BUT THE SAMEZUKA BOYS STEAL THE FUCKING SPOTLIGHT in this. omg THE TWIST. AND THE SCENE WITH THE ANCHOR. AND NITORI WITH THE--- aaaaaahhhhhhh. read it. just read it.

'Eyes Wide Open All The Time' by @macbetha -- Gritty drug and prostitution AU with a shocking amount of heart and pathos. Confession time. I have not finished reading this one. HOWEVER, chapter one *A L O N E* is enough of a reason for you to pic up this fic. It is LOOOONG (chapter one is nearly 20,000 words all on its own), but the world building is SOOOO fucking solid and it's the perfect amount of angst for your resident angst queen over here (read: a fucking HIGH amount).

Favourite moments:

The antagonist to snarky deuteragonist trend that I saw unfold from season to season. (Rin, Ikuya, I see you I see you).

SOUSUKE AND RIN. HOLY FUCK. like LISTEN. I was fully in the RinHaru camp at the end of season one. But the season two twist??? and the A N G S T. *chef's kiss*

The whole of the Samezuka team. I love me my Iwatobi darlings, but there's just something about these chaotic fools that warms my heart.

The waves of swimming nostalgia I was hit with that made me want to get back in to swimming.

November 2021 -- Vampire Knight (Anime/Manga)

L I S T E N. I CAN EXPLAIN… okay maybe no I can’t… flipped this soap opera of an anime on a few weeks back when I saw it on Netflix (the motivation to do so lying halfway between idle curiosity and my desire to fact check a few things a literal DECADE on from my first watch). I was NOT counting on this shit sucking me back down the proverbial rabbit hole.

Is it a masterpiece? FUCK NO.

Is it even all that good? Eh *shrugs* Not really. The show/series had a LOT of potential (which is why pics are essential in this fandom and I am GETTING THERE) that it truthfully never really lived up to.

Is the show worth the watch? ABSOLUTELY. Maybe this is nostalgia talking, but it’s a fun show. Dark and moody and very atmospheric, the anime is wildly melodramatic with interesting characters and the charm of late 2000s shojo that helped get me into anime in the first place. So pop open a bottle of (red) wine, sit down with ya friends and watch this teenage train wreck run it’s course. You can thank me later ;)

'The Week of Four Thursdays' by @madmaenad -- holy god good gracious lordt in high heaven... this fic... this M O T H E R F U C K I N G MASTERPIECE OF A FIC. It is a *inhale* 400,000 word, arranged political marriage, faking-dating-to-real-dating, (mostly) canon compliant, ABO, fix-it fic WITH A POLYSHIP and it has RUINED ME. OHHHHHHH MYYYYYY GODDDDD. It goes without exaggeration when I say this IMMEDIATELY shot up to my top 3 favourite fics of ALL TIME. It is beyond words. Her characterization of Zero, Yuuki, and Kaname is SPOT ON, while interlacing the framework of the characters with a maturity and nuance they FUCKING DESERVED, but never got in canon. It literally fixes everything. AND THE SMUT???? *chef's kiss* Never has a fic more rightly earned the "fix-it" mantel. GOOOO REEEEAD IT.

Watching it again ten years on and hit with waves of nostalgia.

Watching it again... AND NOTICING ALL THE QUEER CODED CHARACTERS (I see you Aido... I see you xD). They're everywhere, almost hilarious that I missed it the first time.

Yuri!!! On Ice (Anime): Ah YOI... My indomitable steadfast love... Honestly? I could give this a section all on it's own as a "constant back of mind" fandom. It pulled me back into my love of anime and brought me closer to some of my favourite people in the world. Eternally making history and eternally in my heart.

Haikyuu!! (Anime): Listen y'all... I have T R I E D (and failed) WITH THIS BITCH TWICE ALREADY. It's just *too* happy. A GORL NEEDS HER ANGST OKAY?? But I think 2022 is gonna be the year (or a girl can dream can't she???) *shrugs*

Sk8 the Infinity (Anime): SPEAKING OF GAY SPORTS ANIME!! lol this was such a flashbomb love affair. Loved the series and was obsessed with it (and the stellar fanfics) for about three weeks... and then my love fled like the wind. Cherry's story (and the subtextual past abuse that is so beautifully implied) RUINED me. 10 out of 10. Everyone should watch.
