“You should call your dad. He’s probably worried sick about you.”

“No! I can’t– he’s gonna be so pissed. Please, Mr. Miller. Would you– would you come get me? I know you’re good with cars and all. Please?” Another long sigh.

“Alright, honey. Will you tell me where you are?” She does, pulled over on the shoulder of the highway, a little ways out of the city but nowhere near home.

“Hang tight, I’m coming.”

“Thank you, Mr. Miller.”

“I’ve told you a thousand times– just Joel, honey.”

“Thank you, Joel.” 

“I’ll be there soon.” She clicks her cell phone shut with a sigh, slumping back in the driver’s seat of her car. Her stomach swirls in anticipation. Normally, she’d try to tamp down the crush she’s had on Joel for quite some time, but after a night out in the city with a few of her old high school friends, she’s just warmed up enough to let her mind race with thoughts of him. It’s silly, something that could never really happen, seeing as her dad has been best friends with Joel for years. But it wasn’t impossible, was it? After all, he’s younger than her dad, and only fifteen years older than her. Jesus christ, get a grip. She huffs, shaking her head to still her thoughts as she looks out at the pitch-black Texas night.

It isn’t long before headlights are brightening up the inside of her car and she turns in her seat to see Joel’s familiar pick up truck pulling up behind her.

The rosary that hangs off her rear-view mirror is swaying harshly, the only sound beside their harsh panting and the sticky slap of skin is it clinking into the windshield over and over again. She’s not entirely sure how they got here, a mixture of late night talking and boundaries being flirted with until they both gave in to something they couldn’t have in the light of day.

“Shit, honey– fucking squeezing me– bit of a stretch for you, huh?” A high-pitched whine falls from her lips, her nails digging into the fabric of his unbuttoned flannel. Joel lets out a breathy laugh.

Shen Qingqiu: Doin Time (Why?? Like, “the living is ease” vibe and the sudden “I’ve come to tell you that she’s evil” just reminds me to much of the fact that he’s the “villain”!! And I just imagined the “Louie” in the song as Sqh so much anyway)

Xie Lian: Brooklyn Baby (I don’t think I have to explain this one also right… the fans go “Yeah my boyfriend’s pretty cool… but he’s not as cool as me…” and also, “Baby I’m a gangsta too and takes two the tango” gets me thinking of two different sceneries, a dance with Hua Cheng as his flower and a dance with words representing his martial god nature)

Wei Wuxian: Salvatore (Salvatore is just him, really, the vibe of, like, even if you’re being murdered, you’re smiling and you’re smiling cause you know that, some way, you’ve just fucking won, of being on a serious situation and taking it lightly because is just his way to do things but at same time not as a mockery or a joke to all the suffering, the pain, but rather, an acceptance with a smile… oh gosh what a ride)

this is post 5x10 nacho reflecting on lalo in the hotel room. it's not even worth picking out lyrics because they all apply. honestly i should make a music video to this.

off to the races: 10/10

honestly giving both ottr and btd the same rating is a little weird to me because ottr is, personally, to me, more lacho. but only because it is the lacho that lives in my head where nacho fully succumbs to the lana-ification and becomes the man he was always meant to be, i.e., lalo's sugar baby. i also personally like interpreting it from nacho's pov because "my old man is a bad man" is insane, he has a broke-down life but an la crass way about him, he's putting his red dress(shirt) on, etc., but i know some people like to think of it as lalo pov, and that's valid, too! anyway i legitimately have a full music video of this in progress.

blue jeans: 4/10 (nacho pov) vs 9/10 (lalo pov)

this one gets a discrepancy because it makes less or more sense depending on who you imagine. blue jeans white shirt walked into the room made my heart hurt is obviously lalo in the famous fit:

like this could be an album cover. but the other stuff doesn't fit from nacho's pov as well.

look, video games is the first ldr song i ever heard and i love it and it's my life whatever, but it's, unfortunately, not very lacho. lana is too happy here. lalo is old and doesn't understand video games. it does get points for "I heard that you like the bad girls / Honey, is that true?" (nacho is a woman) and the lines about holding in big arms and playing pool and wild darts.

diet mountain dew: 5/10

the aesthetics are on point, but it's a pretty general song and really could be applied to any toxic relationship. also neither of them drink diet mountain dew. a few things stand out, though. the usual riding in old cars, smoking cigarettes, mention of jesus, etc, that lana is famous for, of course. this is a white pontiac heaven:

i think it's a bit too old school for the lacho aesthetic, unfortunately. they're more 60s/70s cars than 50s style. though i could imagine lalo keeping a couple of 50s around for nostalgia, but that's headcanon. first of all, this is a great title. i should save this for a fic. lalo is a million dollar man. he’s a seven million dollar man, actually.

anyway, lalo didn’t break nacho’s heart so it’s not as applicable from his pov, even though he IS the most exotic flower and lalo IS screwed up and brilliant and looks like a million dollar man. here’s the fun part, though: so does nacho! therefore, it is actually better from lalo’s pov, as nacho did leave his heart broke ):

Yes to Heaven - God, this song… Made me think about (Y/N) from my story, Rendezvous. This song is literally her perspective and it makes me cry. 😭 Like deadass, it made me tear up, idk. It’s a really beautiful song. 💞 UGH IDK WHY THIS MADE ME TEAR UP. IM SO DRAMATIC. 💀💀💀 I HATE MYSELF LOL. I think the lines, “Say yes to heaven. Say yes to me.” and “If you go, I’ll stay. If you come back, I’ll be right here.” really does match with her character so well. Because whenever Gun leaves, she’ll always be there at home, waiting for him to come back. And I think the reason why it made me a bit “emotional” is because of the idea of how (Y/N) is just waiting for Gun to confront his own feelings. Like yeah, the guy is known to be a heartless bastard, but he also is now starting to actually FEEL things. I guess I got an emotional attachment to my own story. Call me crazy and a Drama Queen. 😭✨

Cinnamon Girl - Ooooo I love how soft and mellow this song is. Also, awwww… shit. 💀 This one too, reminds me of Rendezvous LMAAOOOO. Making me think of (Y/N) x Gun. GDI… 😭😭😭 These lines, “There’s things I want to say to you, but I’ll just let you live. Like if you hold me without hurting me, you’ll be the first who ever did.” Specifically, made me remember Ch. VII when Gun found (Y/N) in the convenience store, crying her eyes out. 🥲 This song made me think about how she was thinking about him without even realizing that he’s been there watching over her. And those thoughts while he was away from her, made her think about how she truly felt about him.

Lana del Rey, clichés, and the worshipping of the ridicule

In his essay Casablanca, or, The Clichés Are Having a Ball, scholar Umberto Eco wrote: "Two clichés make us laugh. A hundred clichés move us. For we sense dimly that the clichés are talking among themselves, and celebrating a reunion." How can this statement apply to Lana Del Rey’s persistent use of American clichés?

Americana iconography and references to it pervade Lana Del Rey's music and visuals. She displayed the Star-Spangled Banner in the music videos of ‘Ride’ (2012) and of ‘Born to Die’ (2011), on the cover of Norman Fucking Rockwell! (2019) and during her shows — before saying, in 2017 (after Trump's election) that she would not use it live anymore, at least in front of international audiences, as she thought it would be 'inappropriate' and that it 'would feel weird [...] now'. In the Tropico short film (2013), Lana plays Eve in a Garden of Eden peopled by impersonators of John Wayne, Elvis Presley and Marylin Monroe. Arild Fetveit notes that the three residents of the Garden appear 'nearly used up.' This phrasing is consistent with the way one could define the cliché as something ‘that has become overused to the point of losing its original meaning or effect, even to the point of being trite or irritating’ (Wikipedia). Fetveit adds that the reunion ‘clearly affects [the] icons of a coveted past with an iconoclastic gesture.’ However, Lana worships them (Wayne is made God: ‘And John said “Let there be light” and there was light’) and will sing about being their descendants once the song starts (‘Elvis is my daddy / Marylin’s my mother’). She’s in awe while facing the dissonance taking place before her as the icons clamor in discord. What I find interesting is that the cacophony is unbearable for the viewer while the character Lana interprets is moved by the scene and her meeting with the fallen icons. She embodies innocence and naivety as seems to be undisturbed by the reality of the American symbols. She’s the one ‘celebrating a reunion,' while the clichés are unable to literally ‘talk among themselves.’ Moreover, Christopher Glazek wrote in 2012 that Del Rey ‘reveres the things we ridicule,’ which I think is greatly depicted in Tropico but also in her lyrics. Her worldbuilding is thus tied by specified references to prosaic, mediocre and sometimes ridiculous (white) America which act as a great contrast to her fascination for old Hollywood, rock’n’roll… If some of these allusions are ironic and surprising (especially in ‘Cola’ and ‘Sweet Caroline’) they can be seen as comments on the US of the twenty-first century (consumerism, digitalism) and as the manufacturing of new lore.

All in all, I find the way she’s able to go from nostalgia-imbued clichés to current ones really interesting. An overall view of her discography/videography makes one the witness of the ‘celebrating’ of a ‘reunion’ of varied clichés through which they all ‘talk among themselves' instead of clashing as one would expect.

5 years ago today (Jan. 31), Lana Del Rey blessed us with the U.S. release of her major-label debut Born To Die, which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and established Lana as one of 21st-century pop’s cult icons.

The New York songstress, born Elizabeth Grant, tells many stories on the album, ranging from adventurous, dangerous love on “Off to the Races” to rebellious-youth reminiscences on “This Is What Makes Us Girls.” She gave the pop-noir sound her own hip-hop-influenced flavor, and in many ways, the album transformed Del Rey from an indie sensation into a mainstream superstar.

The acclaimed album is dripping with quotable lyrics about sex, drugs, red party dresses and everything in between. Here are the best from each of the 15 tracks on the album’s deluxe edition.

“Born To Die” “Don’t make me sad, don’t make me cry/ Sometimes love is not enough and the road gets tough, I don’t know why”

Accepting that not every love is meant to last forever, Del Rey wants to enjoy the romance while she can and not waste time being upset.

The ultimate Bonnie and Clyde romance, Del Rey creates the image of her lover watching and admiring her in their hotel room as she gets ready for the evening.

A recurring theme of love being challenging, this lyric highlights that even though they have differences, Lana and her love compliment each other well, as do the worlds of hip-hop and punk.

“Video Games” “I tell you all the time/ Heaven is a place on earth with you/ Tell me all the things you want to do/ I heard that you like the bad girls honey, is that true?”

Off arguably the most popular song on the album, Del Rey explained in the Oct. 2011 issue of Dazed that the lyrics in the single’s chorus explained the way she wished her relationship was, while the verses reflected reality.

While a rollercoaster may be an unsettling experience for many, Del Rey is learning to enjoy the ride.

“National Anthem” “He said to be cool but/ I’m already coolest/ I said to get real/ Don’t you know who you’re dealing with?”

Both the “National Anthem” music video (which features a presidential A$AP Rocky) and lyrics show a clear connection with Marilyn Monroe and JFK. As she moves through the song, Del Rey finds herself becoming more arrogant and money-obsessed.

“Dark Paradise” “And there’s no remedy for memory your face is/ Like a melody, it won’t leave my head”

Just like a song you can’t get out of your head, whether it’s good or bad, Del Rey simply can’t stop thinking about her lover’s face.

“Radio” “Now my life is sweet like cinnamon/ Like a f–king dream I’m living in”

This lyric speaks of fame as a double-edged sword. While her life my be a dream, she also uses cinnamon to describe it, which is actually bitter.

“Carmen” “She gives them butterflies, bats her cartoon eyes/ She laughs like God, her mind’s like a diamond”

People have fallen in love with Carmen for her looks, but few realize that she’s troubled by the life she’s leading, and the fact that she hides her sadness. She’s painted as a master of seduction.

“Million Dollar Man” “I don’t know how you get over, get over/ Someone as dangerous, tainted and flawed as you”

Although this man is flawed in numerous ways, Del Rey loves him for it all the same, and finds it impossible to forget their romance.

“Summertime Sadness” “Honey I’m on fire, I feel it everywhere/ Nothing scares me anymore”

Dealing with all kinds of “summertime sadness,” Del Rey finds herself letting go of her past flame and this gives her a sense of fearlessness.

“This Is What Makes Us Girls” “Sweet sixteen and we had arrived/ Baby’s table dancin’ at the local dive/ Cheerin’ our names in the pink spotlight/ Drinkin’ cherry schnapps in the velvet night”

Underage drinking, barroom dancing, cheap liquor – this lyric has it all.

“Without You” “Summertime is nice and hot/ And my life is sweet like vanilla is/ Gold and silver line my heart/ But burned into my brain are these stolen images”

While Dey Rey has everything she’s worked for and has wanted her whole life, she still can’t erase the images of what could have been from her head. Regardless of the success, there is still something missing.

“Lolita” “I want my cake and I want to eat it too/ I want to have fun and be in love with you”

These two lines say essentially the same thing – Del Rey wants love, but also the freedom to break hearts at the same time.

“Lucky Ones” “I tried so hard to act nice like a lady/ You taught me that it was good to be crazy”

The closing track is a love song where Del Rey feels accepted and loved for all that she is, and these lyrics perfectly embody that. She’s met someone who makes her feel comfortable and love who she is as opposed to trying to conform to expectations.
