hoooo boy. time to steel myself to read this volume again for the sake of writing this post. i press onward...

but first i must ask:

chapter 1:

i think nightow is trying to kill us by showing so much of vash with his blonde hair... on the covers, in this flashback... blonde vash almost looks like a completely different character. but the only thing that changed was his hair... *unrolls list* and his clothes, and the haunted look in his eyes, and his will to live, and...

"that is how i lived my life"... he's mentally preparing himself to do the deed...

there are a lot of compositions in this chapter that i like, especially because vash's stark black color scheme is so cool, but i especially like watching legato zip around lol.

the earth ship crashed... uhh... is chronica okay? was her role in this story really to show up, fail to avenge domina, and then die?

knives smiling again!!! --but this time it's an evil smile!!! he genuinely looks cute here...

legato is over here waxing poetic about vash being his narrative foil as they have a fight to the death. i wouldn't expect anything else from him.

this next sequence... hmmm... i'm not really sure how to put this. the buildup to legato's death that doesn't come because vash doesn't pull the trigger... it would almost be funny if it wasn't so fucked up. like, even within the narrative itself, it's presented as if this is the time for him to die. he has a flashback, he waxes poetic about his death... and then in that moment... it doesn't happen. even after vash tried to steel himself earlier in the chapter.

i dunno... i'm just sad...

i don't know if this is another thing that nightow nabbed from the 98 anime - legato holding vash's friend(s) hostage to get him to shoot - but it's really SUCH a legato move... i said in my last post that legato is the most "the same" across the adaptations and he REALLY is. using the same tactic in the same scenario... "make your choice and break"...

but it's EVEN MORE fucked up than in 98 lol... when i said livio was gonna have an interesting time trying to stand up with the state his body was in i DID NOT THINK THIS WOULD HAPPEN!!! OKAY???

oh, but being afraid to scroll and being met with an image of wolfwood... wolfwood, fully visible...!! he was admittedly a sight for sore eyes in this dire scenario... even though he plays directly into the tragedy of this entire affair. vash has to shoot to save livio, who wolfwood gave his life for...

chapter 2:

oh jeez... whose voice is this? is this razlo? (there's no profanity, so maybe not...) livio talking to himself? or is it... wolfwood...?

and vash is now completely broken. his entire worldview, everything about how he's lived up until now, falling apart around him...

"did it feel like this for you, too?" hmmm... it flashes back to the scene with wolfwood, but in this moment i'm actually remembering meryl's words about how it felt when she shot someone for the first time.

...they successfully attached the cable to the ark, but i'm imagining knives feeling an itch and smacking it like a mosquito LOL

how to put this... i like that it's a kid's thoughts that get projected. because kids are kids... and they're a purer expression of human need than adults who can be caught up in bias or like, social expectations. if it had been an adult who got hit with the feather, things might have turned out differently, but it's a natural reaction for people to want to help a kid...? gah, i don't know how to word this!!

and it's interesting that the plants' attempt to communicate with humans also forces the humans to communicate with each other, because that's how plants communicate amongst themselves...

he's separate, but he can still... control it? like, he made it teleport, so he can still control it, right? at least to a degree...

yes, i like this, i like how it's not easy, i like how even though knives is in the wrong about pretty much everything and is just using plant abuse to justify his own actions, we're not just ignoring the fact that abuse did happen and needs to be addressed.

and yet, the plants also remember the good times. nightow is really good at distilling the full scope of human nature into vignettes like this...

huh? balance of primordial energy?! reigniting an age-old conflict?!?! dude, you can't just drop that on us without EXPANDING ON IT?! WHAT DO YOU MEAN??

chapter 4:

vash's... dream? is this a dream? or is it more literal, like he's on the verge of dying... so he sees all his dead acquaintances in the afterlife... but he can't join them yet, he still has something to do...

the earth guy (does he have a name?) praying before firing on the ark as if it will grant him absolution... lol. lmao, even. we've seen characters pray a few times over the course of this story, mostly wolfwood, and vash that one time... idr if anyone else prays? but this guy? this guy's prayer? i have to laugh.

he is fucking LUCKY that knives was able to block that. i also love the irony in knives's actions saving the people below.

that's so cool... i know i'm supposed to be like, "oh no, he's so powerful, that's scary, how will they beat him now?" but instead i'm just amazed at the sheer display of power LOL

what a gorgeous spread... the wings... jaw... teeth?! are so cool-looking...

meryl and milly are so resilient... it's been said a million times lol but they really do represent the best in humanity. it's a shame that they've gotten less screentime (page time?) in the latter half of the manga, but none of what relatively little they do get has felt wasted. staying strong and doing what they can... they're so cool...

really gotta wonder about the people who were hating on miorine mid-season. like were they just not paying attention? so much of her emotions are displayed to us through her body language

and i really just love the part in this scene when suletta starts fidgeting and we SEE miorine notices this. we SEE miorine notice that suletta is deeply uncomfortable with this conversation. it's such a blink or you'll miss it moment and i just really appreciate that detail

i really wish we would have gotten miorine finding out more about the vanadis incident on-screen instead of it being part of all the things that got off-screened in the second of the show

like at some point her and suletta had to have talked about all this, yeah? suletta even has "first-hand" knowledge of sorts because of eri pummeling her with data transfer memories

i just really want to see that conversation so bad. i can't imagine how miorine feels knowing it was her kuso oyaji that started all this and destroyed elnora's family. it just adds to my headcanon that miorine has not forgiven him at the end

i think i watched the greenhouse conversation a million times after this ep aired and after the 17 break week. i really can't express how amazing i think the voice acting is on that part and although i honestly don't know shit about sound engineering, the softness and vulnerability in miorine's voice throughout that whole scene is just amazing

16. What is your most underrated fic?

Okay, I've written some niche fic, so I tried not to pick one that was just, "No one read the short, gen one-shot offshoot of an already niche longfic! Who could've predicted this!" because, let's be real, I knew when I posted them that was gonna happen. (Even though I think some of them are really lovely.)

HOWEVER I do push let the earth humble you withal as often as possible even though I also knew it was gonna be niche content (it's, yanno, about grief) because I think the writing is pretty and cathartic and quite fun in a ghost story kind of way.

18. What is a line/scene you’re really proud of? Give us the DVD commentary for that scene.

DVD commentary for this question: I reblogged this list VERY scared someone might ask this, because I have written so much and I have forgotten most of it. My entire writing process is probably best described as a sort of exorcism, and the demons just keep coming, babey.

ALAS, I picked the very last scene of chapter 10 of what luminous worlds await, which is the culmination of two chapters worth of really messy memory amidst a quite literal mental conflict with Deirta, who ends up broken down in a dreamscape having realized how much her family has hurt over everything she's tried to do for the Dynasty. And Essek... I wouldn't say forgives her for it, but gives her the space to move forward from it. It's a lot about having to take certain steps as a child that you feel the parent should take, and no longer expecting things of them that they're never going to offer. And sometimes you get a little bit of those things, in the moment you stop expecting them.

I love that scene so much, and I was fucking terrified to post it.

Mostly I was worried that people were going to be pissed that it was settled that easily, and that she's given that grace, and... you know. Deirta is a very polarizing figure despite having one mention on screen, lol. And a lot of that fic was actually my own processing of growing up in my mother's very large, insular, Catholic family, so it was already pretty close to home.

But god it was so cathartic to write. And it worked really well and people seemed to really like it! I think in part because the second person POV does so much work in that chapter and for Deirta in particular—there's a three-part unraveling of a memory from her perspective in that chapter that made it all come together.

Also, hilariously, I have genuinely had a much better relationship with my mom since writing that fic specifically, so, you know, miracles can happen! Not hating your mom, nor absolving her, but a secret third thing (recognizing that she's a real live person with flaws who is as much a product of her own varied history as you are of yours)

There are many lines from that scene that I love a lot, but I picked one: "This is not a strength built of centuries of stoicism; this is the strength of being ripped open and finding oneself more whole than expected. You are familiar."

20. What’s your favorite minor character you’ve written?

I went through like every member of the Thelyss family before I was like, it's Abrianna. Duh. She's a delight. I write her like a composite of all of my (numerous) great aunts plus my very eclectic AP World teacher, who I discovered recently was once investigated as a communist, which was utterly unsurprising. (That woman was ending the Pledge of Allegiance with "liberty and justice for some" at a Catholic school in 2010, so, you know. Ahead of her time. This is not relevant to this question but I do love her for it. )

At least like.... twelve of the reasons I am the way I am has to do with that teacher, probably. Also unsurprising that I keep throwing Abrianna at Essek as some kind of mentor/thorn in his side.

Okay quick Chandrayaan 3 brainrot post again: can we talk about Pragyan please? Pragyan is literally the most adorable thing, that one lil robot on wheels can do so much! Here are some fun facts!

Pragyan has a payload called the APXS or the Alpha Particle X Ray spectrometer. It literally irradiates moon rocks and gets back the composition of what it contains! (Massive oversimplification) That little thing can do so much and it only weighs 26 kgs!

It has a shelf life of 1 lunar day or 14 earth days. And it travels at 1cm/s speed. If you're looking at the Moon's dark side right now, provided it is nighttime, you'll likely be looking at this lil thing taking baby steps and exploring the moon's surface all on its own!

They've fitted the rover with so many solar panels so there's no power disturbance. The reason for a short shelf life has to do a lot with how much solar energy it gets (again massive oversimplification) and there are often constraints to work with. There's been talks on improving the shelf life and recommendations but can I just take a moment to appreciate ISRO for being able to carry out so many precise experiments in this lil guy in a short span of 2 weeks?

Pragyan also has something called Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy or LIBS which literally breaks down surface materials with lasers, measures the fucking plasma vapours AND REPORTS IT BACK TO SRIHARIKOTA/BANGALORE MISSION CONTROL.

It's total power generation is about 50 watts, has six wheels, has a camera and has a dimension of 3 feet x 2.5 feet x 2.8 feet.

The Pragyan wheels have this stamp of ISRO's logo and the Ashoka emblem on the lunar surface, thus cementing it on the soil forever!!

I'm not sure if Pragyan 2 will visit the crash site of CY-2 (Vikram 1 and Pragyan 1 ended up crash-landing about 600km from the South Pole) and I don't know if it is within the realm of possibility, since Pragyan 2 has a maximum range of 500m within the place where they're interested in conducting the in-situ science experiments, but it would have been a real homecoming moment. To think that it took ISRO 3 and a half years (2 shaved off due to the pandemic) to come up with a design solution to do the unthinkable and make some powerful discoveries is just..

The wildest moment that is perpetually stuck in my head from growing up in a Christian high school was in the first week of my freshman year, and I am resisting the urge so hard to make this sound like a formal essay because i stg it's funny

So background, I did, in fact, go to a Christian grade school, where I was generally seen as kind of the weird kid, since I went through kindergarten in a wheelchair and that wasn't really something most kids forgot. However, being the weird kid, I kinda got away with some shit that generally wasn't seen as "the norm" in the school, like spending most of my time, being the nerdy kid I was, obsessing over the theory of evolution, reading a book from the Chicago Natural History Museum I got on one trip about the eras of the world in particular, and generally kind of hearing the "young earth" stuff and going "...nah, I don't think so, because of these fossils and this carbon dating and also some physics here, but thanks, though." I kinda came up with my own theory of theology at that point, one that mostly was Christian but with a much more scientific background (and still forms the basis of my modern "yeah Christian but questioning is okay" viewpoint). That made people think I was MUCH weirder, though, and that was something I wasn't into going into a new school.

So when I went to high school, it was kind of a fresh start, and I was determined to take advantage of it, even though that brought with it a fundamental awareness that I would probably have to bluff my way through some stuff. Cue first week of school, my HISTORY class (with a fun in the moment but in hindsight really kinda ...*off* teacher; he was notable for having a day of lectures every year where students could bring in brownies and he would spend the entire period talking about Plato's Allegory of the Cave to subtly call students who didn't believe in Bigfoot idiots, long story short lmao) gave us an assignment: find five scientific arguments for why the earth can only be 6000 years old.

Of course, there are like. Very few scientific sources for that lol. It's not gonna be supported by a peer-reviewed journal; it'll be Christian websites. So eager to both Not Fail Immediately and to fit in, cite those five sources and do the presentation. Now the funny thing to me, which I guarantee no one else got: he made us choose a favorite argument. One that was a "trump card," in his words, to those pesky pesky evolutionists. So I proceeded, naturally, to choose the most stupid ass theory I could as my trump card. It was literally a conspiracy theory! I said that tectonic plates would get too fucking FRAGILE over the years and the earth would split apart like overheated glass!!! This is blatantly wrong because of the crust's composition, not to mention the physics behind it, the physics behind GLASS, and the chemistry of heating different materials!

Anyway I got the assignment back with an A and a note saying it was his favorite theory too--

because i kin both of them, neither. they have objectively perfect music taste. KIDDING! lol i'm not. the only ssue with them is actually just... shuffling their music library. you'll go from crazy frog to earth angel to not afraid to misery business and everyone has to put up with it

THIS IS ACTUALLY A COMPETITION THAT EVERYONE IS AWARE OF. people have seen espio get chatty at some point (especially the chaotix bc duh) but there's a secret game called "enable espio or wave to say a fact so they duke it out" because it's free entertainment. after figuring out how goddamn fascinating it is to put espave in the same room, the rest of the sonic characters go out of their way to set them up for rapidfire infodumps. espio knows a lot of Echidonian history, linguistics, weapons trivia, law, old films, and upper level calc/physics. wave specializes in anything tech related for obvious reasons, but also Babylonian history, geography, archaeology, video game lore, influencer drama, and compsci. music, 2000's to early 2010's fandom spaces, cold cases, philosophy, and sports have then equally matched (the last one being a common weakness). these might seem like non obscure areas, but trust me it gets specific real fast! "did you know there are 941 potholes in soleanna?" ESC 2021 Preshow: 08. France

Barbara Pravi - “Voilà”

Autoqualifier

France going from 3rd last on my ranking / likely last place in the finale to 8th place in the ranking / probably top 3 in the Grand Final. 😍 WHAT A GLOW-UP.

So, “Voilà” is epic, obviously. Yeah I will skip the theatrics, each and every one of you know this song and we all know it’s probably the best French entry in ages. 

Funnily enough, I didn’t care for “Voilà” when I first heard it lmfao. It felt similar to the song Patricia Kaas went to Eurovision with and while “Et s’il faillait le faire” has its fans, I was never one of them. Worse, the internet immediately resorted to refering to “Voilà” as a “masterpiece” which is probably the pretentious statement you can make about Eurovision songs. Guys, it’s an Edith Piaf-inspired tribute act. Calm the eff down. Still, even at this early a stage I was instantly charmed by Barbara’s introspection and pluck even if I didn’t care for the music at first. After all, Barbara was the mastermind behind jesc HITS “Bim bam toi” and “J’imagine” and if she wants to bring a song that puts HER SELF at the forefront, she’s perfectly entitled to do so. About fucking time. On top of that, I thought the ending was sublime, even in studio version. “Why can’t the entire song be like that”, I thought. And then, E:CVQD arrived and Barbara SERVED, OUTSOLD, SLAYED, etc every superlative under the sun. 

So remember when I aired my critique regarding Gjon? “Tout l’Univers” is an “Objectively Strong” composition in that it employs music theory to conjure up a song that sounds impressive on first listen. But behind that academic skill lies virtually nothing of interest. I cannot connect with it beyond a base level because what does it tell me about Gjon or his story? Technique without a heart or a soul is merely pretense. But I suppose it can sound sophisticated to someone who doesn’t know what “sophistication” is. 

Barbara, however. Her personality just SPRINGS FORWARD on an approachable level from the first note. “Voilà”s’s technical expertise and Barbara’s own perfomance talents carry this vibe, this SERVE of personality, through the full three minutes without ever getting boring or tedious and they leave me craving for another listen. ALL OF THESE ARE AMAZING TRAITS IN A EUROVISION SONG. And this is just from the studio version, the live stage show makes it even better. 

So yeah, homeboy’s got his work cut out for him because if this is his competition he’ll have to graft hard for his victory.

NF Corner -  C’est Vous Qui Décidez

In what would become a running theme amidst countries this year, France led the charge in a personal project called #OperationForget2020, in which every trace of last year would be subsequently memory-holed. To acheive this, they revived their NF, gave it a new name and pretended it was ~The First NF of Its Format~ (so basically doing what Lithuania did last year when they rebranded Atranka into PiN).

INCIDENTALLY, this would also wind up the best NF of the year, pretty much by default because France had the most to win. Even though Barbara was the obvious winner from the instant the songs were revealed, the French had some excellent back-up options in their arsenal. Let’s rummage through them shall we?

LMK - “Magique”

R&B Trap wench <3 “Magique” starts off pretty and cute for fifteen seconds, before whiplashing hard into kick-ass tropical house territory. Her Slovene spirit mothers Raiven and Lea Sirk are so proud of her <3 She definitely deserved much better than the result she got (being NQ with the audience O_O), but lol it’s France, they ain’t NEVER crowning a sexually confident sassy woman, let’s not kid ourselves. 

Céphaz - “On a mangé le soleil”

This Hat God had me at that title. “We have eaten the sun” 😍😍😍😍. More songs should adopt a fatalistic environmental angle by using consumption-related metaphors à la “we’ve devoured out planet :burp:, MOAR”, and then set this suuuuper cynical and depressing text to an upbeat and optimistic soundtrack <3 The “Hey ya” tease of it all. 😍

Amui - “Maeva”

So cheerful it turns a surly cretin such as myself into a blundering mass of uwu. It’s like a nillies Eurovision semi NQ’er suddenly wandered into the set, so derivative and repetitive and tacky but SO fun and happy-go-lucky <3 The entire premise of “Maeva” is basically like: “VISIT FRENCH POLYNESIA, WE ARE THE MOST HOSPITABLE PEOPLE ON THIS EARTH” <333 using this message in the middle of a worldwide viral pandemic <33333333 Normally fun-trash like this would be murdered at first sight by any jury, but whoops “Maeva” turned out a massive televote hit HEHEE 😛 and finished third in the televote despite being last or second last with the jury. Those Tahitian diasporia votes coming through <3

Adriamad - “Allélujah”

TACKY EUROTRASH <3 Lol when I think of it, did I like this NF because it was good or because it was so fun-trash. Anyway, this display of diversity would normally be on my shitlist but it’s honestly SO OTT in its ~People Of The World Of All Colours Are Equal~ message it circles back into funny. The eye gimmick, the hammy choreography, the obnoxious fusion of several cultures into a nondescript ethnotrash hodgepodge, the fucking LYRICS everything is so funny and so entertaining it’s giving me LIFE. 😍 I’d say it deserved better but “Allélujah” stranding in the demifinal (not a typo) is honestly a much, much more satisfying result <3

Predicted Journey - France

Barbara is going on that Mahmood trajectory, I see. Early fave who gets near unanimous critical acclaim, rules solely on top until the other contenders show up and is then put on the backburner because she’s an autoqualifier and therefore isn’t a part of the “who will qualify?” discussions. Then, the rehearsals will happen and everyone will remember “hey, that French chick we almost forgot about is actually REALLY good” allowing her to pick up momentum again, catapulting her into the top five. So it is written, such it shall be.

The question is... Can she win? 

The answer is: yeah, possibly? At this point we have three potential contenders: Gjon for Switzerland and Destiny for Malta are the main rivals and I’d say Barbara has one big advantage over Gjon and Destiny: She already has a great live performance to back up her potential winner status. In fact, Barbara is a fave to win because we know what she’s going to bring in Rotterdam.  Gjon and Destiny could theoretically still bomb if their staging is off (and both are getting theirs done by Sasha Jean-Baptiste, soooooo) and their contenderness is based on things such as hype and expectation. Barbara meanwhile already had her baptism by fire when she competed in E:CQVD, which she handily won.

The problem though is Gjon Muharremaj. For the average eurofan, France and Switzerland have similar entries and it will result in a tug-of-war between which of them has the better song. Either could win this televote bout, and whoever does could beat Malta.. .but that would require Malta to have a disappointing televote result and with each passing day this is starting to look less likely. (Jury results matter less because they’re probably the top 3).  Personally I don’t really have a preference between Barbara OR Destiny as a win for either would push Eurovision in a better direction (A Gjon win though... I am TERRIFIED that may result in a 2022 contest filled with Vincent Bueno’s and Vasils), but if these three are indeed the top three, Barbara’s position is the most secure although she’s probably also the least likely one to actually win. Pray that I’m wrong though and we can all meet at her flat in Montmartre for a covid-proof afterparty.

oh shit really? uhh idk if i can do that but... i mean i gotta say siyeon right? her voice *is* dreamcatcher to me. her voice defines their sound more than anything else, even more than their rock concept. like for real, her voice is more integral to the feel of a dreamcatcher song than the guitars or sort of dark vibe. well, her voice brings the dark vibe a lot of the time, honestly. after that i’d say jiu cause her voice is the total opposite, she has the voice you would least associate with a concept like this, but that serves to add a lot of range to their sound too. her voice is so vividly bright and cheerful... so, dreamcatcher’s dark concepts are defined by siyeon for me, and dreamcatcher’s lively personality and energy onstage and offstage are defined by jiu for me. those first lines of “wake up”? iconic, full of energy, aaaaaa i love her. after that i guess i’d say yoohyeon cause she’s the lead vocalist lol. and then... about the same for the rest. i dont have an order from then on. they’re one of the groups where i think it’s the easiest to tell which member is singing just from audio alone, all seven of them have distinct vocal characters. the only two that i sometimes mix up (again, just based on audio only) are sua and gahyeon. or dami when she sings lol

sua - hmmm.... im having trouble remembering which eras were which for certain members... i know she had reddish purplish hair for piri right? i cant remember some of them though... like she didnt have as many drastically different looks as someone like siyeon or dami. maybe i’ll say good night though, purely because of her rap haha. what do you mean? like in terms of types of songs? uhhh.. idk.. most of the stuff i would say to this is stuff that i have no doubt will actually come. i want more bangers like piri and what, i want more edm stuff like sleepwalking and silent night, but yeah i’m sure we’ll get that. i guess what i’ll say is... more songs with involvement from the members. either in terms of composition or even just lyrics. though i like the composers and lyricists they have a lot! i’ll also say if nothing else, then a song choreographed at least in part by the members would be amazing. idk if it’ll happen for a title track, but if sua choreographs one of their edm bsides or something, and they perform it live on music shows, fuck...

What would you say to each member if you didn't have to worry about a time limit?

each member individually??? that’s too time consuming woirjgeoiwrgew but i do have individual answers for all of them probably lol. especially yoohyeon, i wanna talk to her about languages. i’ll just say to all of them how much i appreciate them and how they arent boxed in by typical idol conventions, but they also arent boxed in as outside them either. like, they’re not an anti-kpop-group, they’re not the complete antithesis, they like being a kpop group and they like other kpop groups so they would never want to be that. i like how much fun they have, i like how close they are, i like how they treat their fans, i think if the fandom did something really awful or went too far i like to think they would feel comfortable letting us know. hopefully, anyway. more than most other kpop groups i’m aware of, it’s easy to find them in videos and vlives and stuff not being totally in idol-mode and just being people, and friends with their members. im not criticizing other groups, cause if i was in their position, i think i would have a hard time not being “on” when on camera, even if it’s just a vlive. maybe it’s because they’ve known each other for a lot longer than a lot of other current-gen groups, and they’re older than many of their current-gen peers too. they feel very earnest, they’re not trying to hide. im sure there are aspects to them that we dont know about and will never know about, and i hope that’s the case cause i hope they’re able to maintain some privacy in this job, but it’s not hard to tell when someone is being genuine and when someone isn’t, and i get a very genuine vibe from them a lot of the time. i’m glad they are who they are, they’re really influential and inspirational to me.  i.... also might wanna mention their support for lgbt people, though i would want to talk to them about that in private because it’s personal for me and risky for them and i know how shitty that situation is, especially since i know that they care and would be a lot more vocal if they could be. and they’re one of the most vocal groups about it already! i just want to thank them.

More on the pebble thing, what other differences do you think would happen in the world like not just with the people but with the actual World itself. Like would physics work differently in that world or would the seasons act differently. Lol, this is the exact reason Owain wears his fur lined coat and boots outfit in Awakening but walks around practically without a shirt in Nohr. Despite how lacking sunlight Nohr is, it’s strangely not as brisk there as Ylisse most of the time.

Truth be told, I haven’t thought about the world differences too much! I’ve mostly focused on the people, like I said before. But I really liked the idea of minerals and even stones having recognizably different compositions between worlds! And climates and earth compositions being different would explain different evolution features between the worlds, like the Trio’s tastebuds processing taste differently than people in Nohr. I don’t think the seasons would act differently to a strange or unrecognizable degree, but I think the difference in climates between Ylise and Nohr/Hoshido would make it a new experience for everyone! Additionally, some fun ideas:

Gravity in Nohr/Hoshido is slightly stronger than in Ylisse. Anankos adjusts the Trio’s biology to be fine with this, but it is a little heavier than before. If they were to go back to Ylisse, they’d be noticeably stronger because of this.

Magic works slightly differently in Nohr/Hoshido. Hence why you can have those orb things on the battlefield that allow mages to fire off magic fire missiles. 

It’s hard to describe the exact ways it’s different. It’s still mostly the same. But just… a little different too. More versatile?

Straight up different animals in the world. You seen the cabbit? Animals are weird, man.

Also pegasus allow men to ride them in Nohr/Hoshido too. That’s different from Ylisse as well.

Sometimes the wilderness seems a little more… alive in Nohr/Hoshido. Trees included.

stop being jealous and bitter!

Now i know you cant outright just throw away your jealousy in the art community. You see a really cool popular artist or just someone with absolutely amzing art and you think “wow holy shit their art is so good i wish that was me and that i could do that....” I understand that spite can be a good thing sometimes; it can be what motivates you to improve and do well, especially if the artist is well... not the best person in terms of personality. Great, that’s even more motivation to do well right!? 

But when does all the comparing go too far?

Now i’ve had people very close to me do this. I’ve been told that im ‘popular’ which im honestly not seriously. They could probably be reading this right now, but this has been bothering me for awhile so i must get this out there. Let’s step into a certain mindset for a moment:-

You hate your artwork. You hate your current skills. Sure there are artists you like. But then there are ‘THOSE’ ones. You have very specific artists you follow just because theyre so good and popular they make you feel bitter and you still check up on them regularly to fuel that bitterness. You know good and well that they make you bitter and angry and peeved but you just keep going back.

Step back for a moment and think.... why on earth am i fucking doing this???? Comparing and feeling bitter about another persons skill or popularity and letting yourself stay sad and bitter isn’t good for ANYTHING, art aside. It’s good to want to feel validated at the work you spent time on but it WILL get tiring if you keep complaining that ‘your art is bad’, ‘your art isnt good’, ‘its shit’ or ‘garbage’. Your brain is just internalizing that and hindering your work and future improvement. It’s most importantly WASTING YOUR own time, YOU the creator. And not to sound snobby here, i really truly dont intend for that, but some of you know good and well that you keep belitting you work because you only just want people to compliment your art when youre only doing the bare minimum to improve! I can only tell you as a friend or an on-looker that i love your art so many times (as much i really do love it and hope for your improvement) if you continuously decide to still turn around and say you hate your work and tell me im wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why reach for compliments then! Why continuously turn them down?

And i’m not saying you cant ever not like your art (cause it happens) or decline a compliment, but to do it every single time....it leaves a bad image for your work. You either start to believe it, or the person complimenting you will get put off from your negativity!  

It makes people feel bad, especially if theyre also artist AND also your friends. You can’t keep saying you prefer their work and still put down your own. It makes your artist friend uncomfortable. They might not know how to respond when you keep doing it. And im sure they wouldnt want you to keep making yourself feel bad. Personally, i wish all my art friends success and improvement, and i want them to love and feel proud of their work more than the times they hate it. We really need to uplift each other as artists.

What you think and say is what you become and if youre always negative and comparing youre gonna tear down both the person you admire and yourself. Ie, if youre constantly thinking ‘ill never be as good as this person’,’no ones ever gonna like my work’, ‘i cant color as well as they do’ or saying that your work is only ever garbage... newsflash asshole! your mind absorbs that negativity and makes you believe it! u fool!!!!! Because brains are stupid and can be your worst enemy at times! 

Sometimes you just need to stOP looking at certain peoples work completely if it gets you that bitter or angry or sad. Unfollow them! Block them! Delete their name from your search history if you have to! Stop hurting yourself and forget about them, it’s like trying to think about an ex thats moved on. Pointless.

Negative emotions such as sadness and anger are our brains direct ways at trying to reach out to ourselves.

You: seeing cool art Your mind: remembering you dont have some of those skills or popularity + comparing = sadness/ anger/ bitterness at not being able to be at that lvl withtin the same timeframe or less

Your brain is trying to tell you to fix this! But you know you might not have the tools to gain that much popularity or become so good at anatomy, coloring , compositions or backgrounds overnight, so the only solution for your brain is to self-sabotage.

It’s just the same as suddenly feeling sad for no reason. It’s your mind trying to work out a problem you never resolved. Maybe your friends haven’t replied in awhile and you feel ignored. Or you subconsciously remembered a bad experience without really realizing. You’ll get sad. Your mind is is saying ‘Hey asshole im sad. I know it might be out of your control but I’ll stay sad about this one thing until you resolve it somehow. ’ (whether it be blindly distracting yourself on purpose or fully wallowing in the feelings)

So we realized youre feeling intensely about this persons work vs your own...then what exactly happened there? The answer is pretty simple. Some kind of information processing happened in your brain. The result of this processing made the your mind conclude that one of your existing problems (art in this case) can never be solved; whether conscious or unconscious, and this explains why your mood might change all of a sudden without any kind of warning signs (in relation to what you saw). 

Inspired VS Jealousy When youre inspired youre working against yourself in a GOOD way. You’re feeling motivated to make something great! Youre feeling motivated to make something better than the last piece!! And honestly thats wonderful!!!  That is a lot nicer than being in art-block, comparison negativity hell.

YOU are the only one responsible for where you are as an artist. That goes towards every artist of every skill level! There’s always someone better than you and there’s always someone worse than you. People get better at art in different intervals depending on how much they take in or put into practicing. Some people just get some concepts and fundamentals a lot easier and quicker than others but that doesn’t mean they naturally had that ability from birth. They put in the work just as you should be doing instead of feeling so intensely negative! But when you’re jealous and negative all the time, that’s when it starts to go downhill. :/

Jealously is a very human emotion at its core. And im not saying its super easy to deal with and just suddenly get over, but there are things you can do to slowly help yourself do it at least a little less.

Here’s the best things you CAN do instead:- - Write down some of the things you find yourself feeling bitter over about, especially when you look at another artists work? Ask yourself why these specific things? If it’s something you yourself can work on in your own pieces then maybe uh do that?  - Find the time to practice your work. - Practice even more. - If it’s your style that you arent happy with think of the artstyles you like and set aside time to mimic the way that artist might draw something (hence adding that to YOUR style). Take a sketchbook page or two and just draw entirely in those styles. - Practice. I can’t stress this enough. I know artists say this a lot and it can kind of just be thrown around carelessly, but if you keep putting this off and saying you don’t want to practice or talking about how time is going by when you should be practicing things.... and STILL refuse to practice then???? I cant help you sorry. Time waits for no one, so sometimes you need to grab time by the horns and kick its ass for awhile. Put in that effort! - Please use references. Even better if you use it nearly EVERYTIME you draw something, especially yknow...if its a pose, body part or background that you know you have no idea how to properly express! Find a stock image or a variety of websites to use! Save poses that you like from online magazines, other artists and photographs you see anywhere online. I like to look at online magazines from other countries or photographers, and there are tons of places like pinterest or instagram and whatnot. - Stop comparing and being bitter. Ii cant say this enough it gets me so ticked off, but my stubborn taurus self refuses to fully go off until it all piles up and this post is the result lol. If you know you can’t let go hating on a certain artist (for no good reason) then dont hate-follow them! Don’t check up on their work constantly! Don’t even talk about them!!!!!!! Try to get them out of your head for goodness sakes. Majority of the time they dont even know who YOU are so why are you worried about what they’re up to. - STOP SHITTING ON YOUR OWN WORK. - STOP IT RIGHT NOW. - AS THE ARTIST SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO FORCE YOURSELF TO SAY ‘’hey, my work isn’t exactly where i want it to be at this point in time and it may never be but i can appreciate that i’ve gotten better at a lot of things and im better than where i was a few years/ a year/ a month ago/ even weeks ago.” - ”I’m proud of this piece and can’t wait to get even better.” - Art is a struggle that takes time, effort and a lot of work. There’s always going to be someone better than you and there’s always going to be someone worse than you. You can only strive to get to the level that would make you happiest, otherwise you will get irritated with it and feel absolutely miserable about everything you produce. - PUT IN THE WORK TO GET YOUR ART OUT THERE. Social media has been both a curse and a blessing to artists all around. It’s made it easier for us to share our work around and opened paths for making money online and at home and connecting with other artists, but competition grows everyday as more people post their work in the same market. (ie another reason why it can be hard to get your commissions out there) Also as artists we want that dopamine rush you get from people liking your stuff, i get that its gucci. -But if you aren’t tagging your works well, posting somewhat consistently, not really bothering to talk to people in certain art communities (even people in your fandom because hey potential friends and even partners on future projects), not adding your works to groups (a big problem i see with people on places like deviantart mostly), joining and sharing them in art group chats/aminos/discords, joining events to get yourself out there (such as zines/big bangs/gift exchanges etc), giving tips and advice or even little helpful tutorials to people then how do you expect to be noticed? How.  If youre not doing at least TWO of these things then hoW can you complain about not getting attention. :(

 Of course you dont have to do ALL of this. Im just saying ...if you arent out there advertising how will more people know about you? This leads to you thinking no one likes your art (skill level excluded because even my cringiest old art would have a few comments or encouragements to see my future improvement, and i still want to hide when people like/comment/reblog said old art to this very day). 

I understand mainly OC artists feel this way that no ones gonna like their characters, or it just doesnt get reblogged enough in general but thats understandable too. No one is ‘selling out’ if they only do fanart. No one is ‘snobby or scared to get themselves out there’ if theyre really enthusiastic about their stories and worlds. Otherwise we wouldnt have fandoms int he first place, theyre all someones work. And hell, good for you if you draw both. It really is just a matter of how you put yourself out there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It’ll take some time but there IS always someone out there that likes your stuff. And sometimes you just have to be content with making work for yourself, work that makes you happy. The online art world is tough especially when youre small but once you fall into the depths of bitterness its hard to rewire your mind...

This is how yall should be looking at your/others work majority of the time: You: seeing cool art  Your mind: omg thats beautiful! i wish i could draw and paint like that. i should practice more , try out some poses and anatomy or implement what they do into my work. i wanna make a cool ass piece like this too i feel so pumped to draw and work!! 

And that’s that! Do yourself a favor and be happier you bastards! Its tiring being negative and sad all the time and i want tf out of it. Its so very tiring and annoying to be sad and bitter as shit!!!!! My goD

Music magazine Bandcamp Diaries just released an interview with Ed Hale, along with a review of the singer’s upcoming new album So For Real. Reprinted below. Ed Hale – So For Real Ed Hale is an artist with a genuine passion for appealing and personal music, which borrows from different genres and influences. The sound of his most recent studio effort, “So For Real”, echoes the depth of classic rock music with the edgy spark of modern alternative – Think The Beatles jamming with Rufus Wainwright, trying to cover a Coldplay song! Ed’s songwriting is richly nuanced, detailed and catchy, and “So For Real” offers an incredibly diverse creative scope, which speaks volumes about the artist’s fantastic journey through music and compositional vision. Based in NYC, one of the most exciting music towns in the world, Ed is all about pouring his heart into his music, but his tracks are fueled by more than just some awesome arrangements. The artist stands out with a really special approach to production, with a sound that feels clear and sophisticated, yet warm and organic. Check out our interview with him below: I love how you manage to render your tracks so personal and organic. Does the melody come first, or do you focus on the beat the most? Great question. Sometimes the melodies just appear in my head… Like idle conversation in the back of your mind. I’ll notice it and then try to work it out with an instrument. Kind of like listening to a radio in your head. Other times It’ll happen if I pick up some instrument and just fiddle around on it, a groove will start developing and I just follow that groove, curious where it wants to go, like catching a wave… but patiently, so I never force it… It’s more like I’m just surfing on that groove for the thrill of the ride, to see where it’s headed, hoping that something really cool will come out of it. Do you perform live? If so, do you feel more comfortable on a stage or within the walls of the recording studio? Yeah, I know, it’s been a while for us since we hit the stage. I LOVE being on stage with the guys. We’ve been together now for like 16 years… So we can pretty much read each other’s minds when we’re playing together. And I just love them as people, so I love being with them, no matter what we’re doing. But making music together definitely creates a really magical thing… And when the audience starts getting into it, that makes the whole vibe lift up to that whole other level, like when the mood in the place starts to lift up into this transcendent elevated place that’s very special. But you know, we’re definitely more album-focused than a lot of bands. I mean, we’re not kidding anybody at this point. We could have spent the last three years on the road like a lot of our friends did. But instead we spent it in different studios recording all these new tracks. LOL! We went in to record a “new album” and didn’t leave till we finished 38 tracks! So yeah I guess we’re just overly obsessed with trying to capture some incredible new treasure in the studio. But now it’s definitely time to get back out and reconnect with our tribe. If you could only pick one song to make a “first impression” on a new listener, which song would you pick and why? That’s a really hard question! I mean, I could pick a handful… But to choose just one? It’s a great question though. It makes you think…. The thing about us is that we don’t have one specific style we make… So if you try to pick just one song, you’re going to end up giving the impression that we make THAT style of music… Which of course, we don’t, because we’re all over the place stylistically. But if you had a gun and were like going to shoot me right now unless I answered you, I’d just shout out “Okay fine! It’s either the song “Caetano” or “Softening” or“After Tomorrow”! Those songs really still move me. And they’re not even new. And they’re not even our biggest hits. They’re from older albums… and kind of obscure to most people. But when I listen to them they still get me high, and give me chills. What does it take to be “innovative” in music? Man I don’t know… I get so wrapped up in that question sometimes and the guys have to grab my feet and start pulling me back down to earth, like “Yo yo Ed we’re not trying to invent a new physics equation here bro! We’re just trying to create beautiful music that other people can enjoy.” I get super into and excited about the whole “Come on guys! Let’s get in there and create something totally fresh and unique and insane sounding!!!” And that’s a good thing I think. As long as your bandmates can help balance you out. You know… To me, doing that all comes down to trying new things you’ve never done before. Man I wouldn’t be who I am today if I hadn’t started fucking around with the tuning pegs on my guitars looking for something new and fresh, out of just this totally frustrating boredom with how normal and same things were sounding all the time. I know it drives the guys crazy, because I have to bring like 8 guitars on stage because each one is tuned to a different open tuning I use. But just the SOUND that creates can be SO fresh and invigorating as an listener that it inspires you…. you end up writing something that you normally never would or could. It’s risk taking, that’s what I’m saying. You have to go in and take these huge risks. Even if you’re going to fail and it’s going to suck. And then also commitment. You can’t quit or give up when you’re out there on that ledge about to crash and look like an idiot. You have to be willing to keep on going once you start trying something new. Like all those beat-boxes and samplers that Korg makes, they’re not easy to work at first. They’re frustrating. But they’re fucking great if you stick with it and keep getting better at playing them. You can INNOVATE on them. Any upcoming release or tour your way? Well you already know about the new album about to drop, SO FOR REAL. That comes out in late August. And behind that we have two more that are ready. The one we’re really excited about is the BORN TO LOSE album, because that’s the one we went in originally to record. But it ended up turning out so dark and depressing that we stayed in the studio and kept recording. SO FOR REAL is like all the songs that had more of an upbeat pop feel to them. So we decided to release that one first, just to not bring people down. LOL! But BORN TO LOSE is really deep and thick. It takes you places emotionally. By the end you’re just mush. That’ll come out this fall. And then ANOTHER DAY IN THE APOCALYPSE is where we put all the songs that were more socially-political or intellectual or angry, like all the most shocking protest songs ended up going on that one. Just to preserve the vibe of the other two…. There was this artist who approached us after hearing the title of that song and she sent us this giant mural she had painted of the song’s title… and it’s super colorful and visually engaging, filled with all this apocalyptic and symbolic stuff. So we decided to use her painting for the album’s artwork and we actually worked off that visual of her’s and used it as inspiration…. I didn’t let myself get worried about what people would think about the lyrics. I just let it rip and said what I really wanted to, what I felt in my heart of hearts. And sometimes it came out pretty crazy, controversial I guess… But it’s very real. We’ll release the first single from that one pretty soon. Once SO FOR REAL comes out. There’s no bs there. It’s real. It’s me, being me and doing what I do. It’s not our record label or any PR company. So it’s a great way to have real connection with what’s going on every day. This particularly pleases me because I was worried Tom & Alexandra (who are both very good performers) would take the spotlight away from Fred, but no did the weakest link pre-show turned not only turn out to be the strongest one, but he was arguable the single strongest performer of finale night. SO PROUD OF THEM ANGELS. 😍 Let us all sing along

A lot of the criticism from KEiiNO comes from your typical value-seekers who can only enjoy themselves in public if their shallow trash comes coated in a thick layer of novelty gimmicks and Deep Meaning, so they don’t have to admit to others and themselves than they tune in to have fun, like everyone else. There’s nothing wrong with novelty gimmicks & the like, but applying that standard to everything is taking it a tad too far. Sometimes, simplicity is key and that’s exactly what KEiiNO were: unpretentious, highly-addictive EDM adorned with epic yoiking. 😍

34. Gianluca - “Tomorrow” Malta 2013

"Tomorrow” is, to use Gianluca’s own words, a curious delight: I always, always, always forget about it. Then I rewatch 2013 as I do at least once per year, and each time it’s like a Céline Dion song IT’S ALL COMING BACK TO ME and I’m in love again. 😍 “Tomorrow” is such a clever twist of the typical love song by telling the story from the THIRD PERSON PERSPECTIVE by an all-knowing narrator. It’s world’s merriest audiobook. 😍

Naturally, this works because Gianluca has TONS of charisma. He’s one of the most magnetic humans ever on a Eurovision Stage? 

It’s hard to believe that he ages like the rest of us, I’d assume he was birthed fully formed and clothed, at age thirteen, in whatever rests at the end of a Neverlandian rainbow. 

“Tomorrow” could’ve so easily been one of those “Annoyingly Positive songs”, but because he’s so relentlessly jolly, Gianluca injects “Tomorrow” with limitless happy energy, enough to melt the polar icecaps. I am happy that I don’t revisit Gianluca between watches, as I do with others, because each time I rediscover him it’s like finding a four-leaf-clover. 🍀

33. Elitsa Todorova & Stoyan Yankoulov - “Samo shampioni” Bulgaria 2013

IMA LI MLADI? IMA LI LYUDI? TSYALO SELO DOIDE PEITE NE SE BOITE

Let us continue with one of the most glorious trainwrecks EVER in Eurovision. 😍 Of course, this being the GOD-tier the severity of wreckage (aka the Sennek Factor) is even higher than normal. In the case of “Samo shampioni” the messiness began DURING THE PRESELECTIONS. 😍 Okay you may not remember or know this backstory, so allow me to enlighten you:

Okay, so *initially* BNT selected Elitsa & Stoyan and for some reason decided to hold an NF: They introduced: first a terrible rapbomination, second a boring ethnoballad (think Iriao + percussion) and then pulled out an experimental fusion of ethnic bagpipes, polyphonic singing and dubstep, which Elitsa openly pointed as her favourite. 😍 Obviously, the audience had to choose for the latter? NOPE The audience chose the iriao-esque ballad 😍 and in one of the most hilariously open displays of riggage, LESS THAN A DAY AFTER THE NF (and after Elitsa allegedly threw a huge backstage temper tantrum threatening to withdraw LMFAO), BNT produced a statement that was all like “well. we can’t send “Kismet”. 🤓 You see... it has come under our attention that... the songwriter from Argentina (lmao) can’t agree to the copyright terms we demanded of him 🤓but that’s fine because it means we can send “SAMO SHAMPIONI” instead 😊‘ <3333333333333333333333456789 who the fuck is Christer Björkman, fucking NOBODY that’s who. And of course, once “Samo Shampioni” finally got to Malmö it was an utter disaster. 😍 I say "disaster” in the best meaning of the word though. I LOVE when countries showcase their musical traditions, but Elitsa and Stoyan do it so aggressively, BLASTING the unassuming viewer with loud af bagpipe noises, following it up with a menuet of polyphony, a clarion of “AAAAAAAAAAAA-YUUUU” and a finale of dubstep and mayumaniacal percussion. “Samo Sampioni” was loud, abrasive, a clamour of ethnic noise but by the same token such a catchy, infectuous, delightful fucking BOP. No surprise it got jurypwned but it was well worth the effort. 😍

32. Nadav Guedj - “Golden boy” Israel 2015

Welcome to the Dicedrome, ladies and gentlemen: Introducing the man who put Israel back on the map after four straight NQs. But Nadav is more than just a Hebrew Tom Dice. 

For starters, “Golden boy” is also the first time we were ever subjected to Doron Medalie (and also Imri Ziv but lol Imri), who is at his BEST here (apart from that moment when he brusquely shoved Cesár out of the way as if he were Krisse Salminen lmfao 😍): “Golden boy” has everything I could want in an uptempo party song: Drama, catchy rhythm, limitless fun, chanting, dancing and an absolutely ridiculous premise: sixteen year old boy gets wasted after fruitlessly flirting with all sorts of femfolk on his first night out. Yes, THIS

is sixteen years old. 😍 But what I mostly love about “Golden boy” is the humour. Intentional humour is really hard to get right and “Golden boy” NAILS it for me. From self-deprecating one-liners, to that choreography to b-roll material like the sound effect of beer being pourn as Nadav gets further into the song, to of course the epic finale of “THREE MINUTES! BYE :selfie”. 😍

A wild ride which, as serendipity demands, is topped off by Nadav kicking off a strong Israeli streak that indeed ENDS up with Israel winning the contest (with a worse Doron composition :-/) and him showing us around in Tel Aviv. Funny how life works sometimes, huh?

31. Jessy Matador - “Allez ola olé” France 2010

Did you know “Matador” is Eurospeak for “SLAYER”?  😉

Speaking of EPIC party songs, I was looking “Allez Ola Olé” up for my usual ranking purposes and this song.. is one of the most successful Eurovision songs EVER? I am not surprised, because “Allez olla olé” OWNS, but at the same time random 12th placers becoming massive off-season hits <3

(yes I am aware it’s because it was the French “Waka Waka” but that’s even more hilar, actually. What on earth is it doing in Eurovision <3)

Anyway, “Allez ola olé” definitely DESERVES all praise it can get. ETERNAL THORN IN THE SIDE OF THE EUROVISION ELITISTS <3 it is of course the anti-Proud, being all rhythm and no story, literally having no purpose other than making people dance (which I LOVE doing to “Allez Ola Olé”... within the confines of my bedroom, with the curtains closed because I have the dancing skills of drunk JarJar Binks) and honestly, what a spectacle. 😍

It features, in order of ascending awesomeness, male twerking (gender equality <3)

witty references to sex (which I don’t mind here because it’s clearly consentual, and therefore, healthy, ICKOLAS)

NORWAY

I don’t feel like this chart reflects my true feelings on Norway, because I like them a LOT more than what their average implies. They’re largely just dragged down by a few bad entries in the first half of the decade. Norway in the second half of this decade has shown a lot of promise and they are on my list of countries that I expect to win in the upcoming decade. 

MALTA

Malta are a very average Eurovision country imo. As you can see, they very often select songs that are not worth giving a fuck about, but conversely the few times that they do, they’re usually excellent happy-go-lucky gems. I could see them winning if they find that rare 1-in-50 entry (by one of their jesc winners preferably), but only if they keep internally selecting their entrant because lmao MES(s)C <3

FRANCE

This is a really good chart for France and roughly what I expected. Not my favourite country but solidly upper tier. France really have reinvented themselves post 2016 and are reaping the rewards with generally higher results. I hope it gets topped off with another win soon. They deserve it.
