"I hate when I say I could have made that and stupid art nerds say 'but you didn't'. it's so cringe"
but that's literally true. you didn't make that art.
take Barnett Newman's art for example. you didn't make it because you literally couldn't make it. you were not a Jew who lived during the holocaust. you did not experience two world wars before you turned fifty. you did not experience all this suffering and death all around you. you did not witness your people face genocide at the hands of fascism. you did not read about two atomic bombs dropping in the newspaper the week it happened while it was celebrated like a victory. you didn't become so jaded and disillusioned by the immense hatred of modern and surrealist art that you decided to make art that is so intrinsically tied to the Jewish experience with a modern twist, such as what he calls his "zips" being both the pillar of fire from the Tanakh and the flash of an atom bomb. you couldn't have made art that invoked such a negative reaction that to make an entire series of paintings as a response to specifically call out the people who are afraid of modern minimalist art.
sure, you could draw a blue line on a red canvas. but it won't have the same meaning behind it that Newman's art does.
don't let that discourage you, though. if you think "I could have done that" maybe you couldn't have specifically done THAT, but you can make something similar. you can put your thoughts and emotions into your art. you can make your art say something. you can't make Newman's art. but he couldn't make your art. because your art is yours, and Newman's art is Newman's. no one can make art the exact same way as someone else. every single brush stroke, every single line, every single thought put into planning is always different. there are never any two pieces of art that are exactly the same. it's always unique. just like you.
don't say "I could have made that". say "I could make something like that". let art be an inspiration, not a challenge to copy. you are a unique individual. your experiences and life and emotions are different from everyone else. so every single work of art you make is 100% yours and 100% unique.

Ai art in general is terrible, but i think people are especially goofy for using/posting ai art of things like sailor moon. Like really? You couldn’t find any art of the incredibly popular and beloved 90s anime sailor moon? No fanart whatsoever? Yeah ok buddy

Ya know what kinda tics me off? Traditional artists getting OBVIOUSLY less attention for their art compared to digital art.
This isnt a bash towards digital art itself! I love it and I’m looking into starting into that path as well, but it just kinda rubs me the wrong way when these BEAUTIFUL traditional art works have such little notes!
Am i a little bias as a traditional artist? Most definitely! But you can not look me in the face and say that traditional art is as well received in the media as digital art.
Sorry— this just has been nagging at me a bit.
REBLOG AND LIKE THE TRADITIONAL ARTIST BADDIES!!!! THEY DO HARD WORK AND DESERVE TO BE RECOGNIZED FOR IT!!

So, let's talk Mammon. (I'm normal now)
Tumblr media
I'll be honest, when I saw him earlier, I just couldn't put mu finger on WHY he pissed me off so badly. By all means, this is a competent enough design ! It does its job exactly as its meant to. You read him as a jester, the money signs and diamonds indicate greed, and the colours themselves aren't half bad [Green/Yellow/Lime is a pretty nice combo]. You can see the design motif communicated pretty clearly and although I'm not the biggest fan of the mismatched sleeves [Far too much detail on a character already loaded with it] and the hat, the circus theming is there, and that's enough to be honest. For most helluva designs, that much thought isn't even put into them. Hell, I think even the eyes kind of fit ! They've grown on me as kind of this harlequin mask type of deal, and although I'm not the BIGGEST fan of him not having at least a nose, I think his facial shape is fine. The most egregious sin (pun intended) this design commits is just being a little boring and generic, but that still didn't make me feel too justified about my disliking of it...
And then it clicked.
It's the clothes, and it's because they make his whole body look disjointed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you look closely, you'll see that he doesn't actually have... shoulders. The arms come from underneath the jester collar, which implies they're on the front, which makes him look like he doesn't actually have joints. A part of me wants to think that its because he's meant to resemble an inflated figure like a balloon of some kind, but that'd be giving way too much credit to Viv. The most likely case of what happened is just that they didn't plan how he was going to look underneath the egregious amounts of detailing on his costuming, and so his anatomy doesn't make any sense as a result. I'm expecting to see a lot of mistakes when it comes to the placement of his arms, but well, let's see how they handle that.
Other than that though ? Yeah. This design is just... a little boring. He's not really connected with the rest of the sins [and they don't connect with one another either, but yk], and he looks to be just another silly HardyHar villain who we're never going to see again. His silhouette isn't particularly strong enough to stand on its own because all his detailing is on the INSIDE of the design, and the details that you DO see are just generic and a little crowded. They do their job fine communicating what he's supposed to be overall, but they also clash SO much with the rest. Like, did you NEED the mismatched sleeves ? No.
Oh, and his values are bad, mostly because the background itself is already Green Green and then More Green, but also because I guess making it slightly darker would throw off the actual vibrancy of the scene. This episode is going to be real fun.
Tumblr media
Anyway here's him with a nose because it was just throwing me off SO bad.

it makes me sad to see how so many people expect artists, cosplayers, writers, editors, etc to be posting content 24/7 and get mad when they aren't capable of doing that to their standards...like we are only human, we have lives, personal stuff to go through, we get tired to the point of burnout sometimes, we run out of ideas! and that's completely normal, no one can be at the top of their game all the time, we need time to rest our minds, search for inspo and grow! but the way some people behave towards creatives is so demotivating...we are not machines, you cannot expect us to behave like one.
People have always been very patient with me and i /still/ feel bad when i dont post something for a couple of days bc of this mindset i see all over the internet! its sick!! And lately ive seen people get complaints by others for not posting much or being "up to their standard" and im so mad. It's so so tiring and it really doesn't help to get most of us motivated to put out more stuff or try to be more creative.

I will never get over 1900’s Disney the stories were amazing, all the female protagonists had personalities besides just being cute and quirky, the art was just drop dead gorgeous specifically the background art and the villains were actually evil instead of having some backstory that makes them sympathetic, i would also argue that the movies were more interesting artistically especially Sleeping Beauty, the illuminated manuscript and medieval art style is just lovely. I wish that Disney would put the same effort into their new movies and create new stories instead of just creating live actions of every movie under the sun. Personally idc if we only got one movie every once in a while as long as they were the quality of the previous movies. Not to mention that 2d animation is much easier to achieve now than it was back then. Like can you imagine if encanto was in 2d animation and had a more distinct style.

ART PROCESS!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’ll be sharing my art process below!
WARNING: This is gonna be a roller coaster ride! The process is not linear AT ALL and the end result will be different from the initial sketch because I’m just an amateur fool who tries to do art and I think it’s funny. Posting it here as a reminder for me us, artists, writers, to keep pushing through until we're satisfied :D. Now, on to the process:
The idea was pretty simple: Piggy-back Tokka. This piece was quite a challenge for me because: Side profile is my weakness, also, I've never drawn piggyback rides before but I was pretty satisfied with how the sketch turned out.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2. Then I had this idea where I wanted Sokka to look back because "intimacy", so I changed it up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
3. And then I colored it..... and then...
4. Changed my mind about the "intimacy" part and went with Sokka looking straight ahead.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
5. And THEN I noticed that the anatomy was fundamentally wrong and that Toph was practically sliding off Sokka's back so I was like FUCK THIS SHIT back to the drawing board it is :)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
6. Started by tracing Sokka again. And then tried to imagine the correct position for Toph. DO YOU SEE IT NOW?? HJASHASHKASKASJSAK
7. .............aaand it went pretty smooth from this point on (kinda). Changed up Toph's position. Changed up Sokka's face for the millionth time. And I was finally done! Why couldn't I have figured this out from the start I'll never know :)
Tumblr media
8. Thanks for coming to my ted-talk! I accept feedback from all my artist gurus if you want to leave some behind :D

Tired Webcomic Creator Noises
Gags … ah yes lets make art into mindless content spat out by Ai cos we've been literally killing creators with inhumane workloads to spit out as many episodes as possible for mindless consumption.
I make my comics with passion and love of the craft! I have a degree in Comics, I spent years...years learning, practising, experimenting, adapting. I recall the days where you may get a page a week, or a few at the start of the month back in the 2000s era of self hosted webcomics and smackjeeves. (Rant below)
I've had to learn how the whole scrolling format worked to adapt to where all the readers had gone to, having been taught the traditional print page formats. And now cos its suddenly a massive money maker for these few hosts and they've pushed creators to the brink with the sheer volume they want pumped out that of course they want to use AI.
Tumblr media
But it will speed up colouring! I have multiple tools available by the software I use and made by the wonderful people who love creating that colouring isn't that much of a chore, Its my fav part honestly. And its also a job sector within comics, colourists are skilled artists and this is another way to trim the fat, to pocket more money and keep churning out the 5th millionth villainess story.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yes I am in most views a tiny creator, I haven't even broken their 1000 sub goal to even try applying for ad rev in the near 5 ish years on webtoon. But what I make I love, I spend hours researching folklore, scripting, drafting the whole kabudle like many other creators. And other than the kind supporters on my Patreon and Ko-fi I don't make much from the hours, days, weeks I pour into what I make. But at least I know its made with my own hands. That its made with love as corny as that sounds.
Ai is creeping its tentacles into everything, now ethically trained ai tools to help smaller creators would be fine. Most creators already rely on 3d tools to speed up things like backgrounds for webcomics. But when we don't know what its trained on, and is marketed wholesale as something anyone can use to make "content" is where it gets insidious. I am all for anyone with the desire to create and tell a story to go out there and do so, whether a beginner or a master. Part of the joy of a long running webcomic is seeing the artist grow both artistically and literary. But with ai it will be all one homogenous style, a copy of what ever is the hot thing. We already have amazon stuffed to the teeth with ai generated books, videos, merch and more all to be sold in some get rich quick manner. (need I point at the Willy's Wonderland incident). Youtube videos being spat out by faceless accounts stealing and regurgitating content at the speed no human video making team can easily match without cutting out quality or fact checking.
It is tiring. Creatives as a whole are treated poorly for decades, and now with the rapid late stage capitalism, website /social media enshitification and the blind headlong rush into the next big money making thing (watches the nft crash). I can't deny Covid sped this up, as everyone was locked inside and turned to what we creators made for comfort. But that content eating boom, lead to more demand, faster output and tighter budgets. We are seeing journalists being cut, game designers in their thousands and recently Dreamworks cutting a bunch and pushing to make their Robot film come out sooner due to public demands.
Tumblr media
Skilled creatives are being treated like disposable fast food restaurant employees. Used til they burn out, get injured and even die! And then are simply replaced.
I've never been a creator with huge ambitions to work at places like DC, Marvel or Top Cow. I simply wished to create and share stories with the world, to bring smiles, to create art that evokes emotions, inspires others to look around themselves and create too.
Art is for everyone. You just need to take that scary jump, there is a whole array of welcoming communities willing to teach and share. I wouldn't have improved so much without the kindness of the webcomic groups I've discovered and learnt from. Everyone is always learning, and there no shame in not knowing how to do a thing. Even I started with the cheesy how to draw books as a kid and made my own pokemon and digimon.
Don't let the world treat your art as content. It is "ART" as much as what's kept in the louvre is seen as art, so is that little stick man doodle on a postit.
So Try something new, try a new material, a new style.
And support the artists you enjoy, tip their Ko-Fi, pledge to their Patreon, buy a sticker or print. Share their posts and tell them what you love about what they make.
Don't let machines steal away the art in HEART.

Helluva Boss designs frustrate me beyond belief as they are, don't get me wrong, but I think the wasted potential with them is much worse for me.
When you see vivziepop's repertoire, you see she is clearly able to do great when she is pushed to it. Some of the designs in Zoophobia are great examples of it in my opinion,
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
They're nothing revolutionary, they're still crowded with heavy detail and random edges everywhere, but at least they hold and stick with a main idea for what they want to do. Elijah is a soft friendly guy (Rounded body language, big fluffy hair relaxed pose), Harlie is this smug grunge-ish girl (Confident expression, grounded colors, clothing style consistent with own personal aesthetic, "cool" kid pose with the arms crossed), and Cherry is a dangerous/unstable character with ties in to crime and heaven (mostly off-white colors, very jagged posing, hair going everywhere almost like an explosion, the transparent wings and halo reminding you she's still technically an angel).
You have the core of the character already expressed for you without having to necessarily read between the lines of everything. Nothing revolutionary, but effective for the purposes of a comic.
When compared with her more recent work though...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The quality just drops, immensely (literally too, wtf did firefox do to my images bruh 😔). When I tell you I couldn't for the life of me tell that Blitzø was supposed to be a clown, I promise to you I am not lying. Millie and Moxxie are also just so bland, with Moxxie mostly looking like he's some kind of butler and Millie just having nothing at all (seriously, why did they give her all black clothes. My girl is drowning in the greyscale girl help). And Loona... I've already ranted extensively about why Loona is a weird design before, but it's just SO simple. Aside from the random ripping on her top, it just does not have main character appeal. Her hair is also just silly looking as hell.
And Andre... well, I can't complain about his design much, but that's only because he straight up is copied from elsa concept art. It's still just boringly monochrome though, with barely any contrast or distinction for where his body starts and ends. It's a mess. There is no concept for any of these designs, there isn't any intrigue there. He doesn't even look much like a peacock or related to Stella at all, he just looks like Stolas if he was in the Frozen Broadway production. Its TREMENDOUSLY disappointing, given what he actually looks like in Demonology:
Tumblr media
Look at him. He's all fucked up. It's so cool.
I'm not going to pretend that Vivienne HAS to follow demonology strictly and unwaveringly, of course. She can do whatever she wants with her interpretations and designs, after all. Still, I feel it's within my realm to be pissed off they look boring though. There are MANY possibilities for what to do with a demon character, and yet she seems too afraid to actually commit to the idea. It just feels silly.
Anyway, the tldr of this is that if you're going to make a show, have a strong concept for the characters in it first, THEN start production. Sincerely, an aspiring concept artist.
