Wikipedia only mentions Dreamcatcher, and that HF Music Company, which I'd assume is a subdivision (correct me if I'm wrong), manages a group called Classmate, no mention of the two groups you listed. but yeah Happy Face Ent. (itself) did create a boy group after dreamcatcher. they sent 2 trainees to Produce 101 s2 and one of them (Jinyoung) became like HUUUUUUGELY popular but instead of doing anything with it after he was eliminated they sent him and other trainees to another reality show (Mixnine) that exact same year which he won FIRST PLACE since ep 1 because he was THAT famous and had THAT much hype askdjalsk but that fell trhough and at the time they had the other trainees do V Lives, and starting from around march 2018 they had this group of 10 trainees (HNB = Happy Face Next Boys) regulary do lives and live shows and fans would vote for them to debut like.. every month. and then one day they said hey we are only debuting 5 of them lol and dropped literally one of the oldest trainees they had (which had been a very sad moment during their mixnine audition bc he did pass too mind you, shout out to Juhyeong 🫡) they did give Jinyoung and Hyunsoo a debut single as a unit and debuted D1CE shortly after, but Jinyoung's popularity had died by then and they didn't get promoted that much so they let them die quietly while one after the other went to the military (FUN DACT: when Yonggeun enlisted exo-l's thought he was Baekhyun who was enlisting the same day and took pics of him 😭😭😭)

they then terminated the contracts of most of the other trainees, but two of them (my Jungwoo and local legend Kosuke) were sent to another survival show (UNDER19) but they didn't make it and after that they were also let go. Jungwoo is currently a member and composer of NINE.i under the name VAHN and he is literally a music genius if you want some new music to listen to all their albums are bop after bop after bop (skip Neverland tho he wasn't feeling well that day)

anyways HF really was very nasty to the trainees but I understand why they gave up on them bc at the end of the day as a company you will favour the people that give you money over those who don't. that's why they always treated Jinyoung so well and forgot about the other 4 lmao

oh god ok i have a decent answer for this kdfsklsdf so one of my cix biases is bae jinyoung but this kinda blindsided me in a way bc i am a perpetual survival show girlie right so when i was watching produce 101 s2 i couldnt Stand him KFDSKLSDF like i really didn't like him and even by the time wanna one disbanded i felt neutral abt him at best i really just didnt Get It with him u kno??? so like i was more into ab6ix when the post-wanna one groups were starting to pop up bc my wanna one biases were daehwi woojin but dear god when i first watched the movie star mv. when i tell u i completely lost it fksldkflsd like he did such a Complete 180 i was so ????? so i spent like 2 months in denial abt enjoying him as well as my love hyunsuk but now i fear i am. just finished pd101 s1 and wanted to give you all my final thoughts! below the cut bc it's long and i know not everyone is interested :3

firstly, sorry i didn't have much to liveblog during the last half or so of the show. i think this is mostly bc personally, i tend to be more interested in the beginning of these types of shows, especially the initial placement performances. after the first round of actual performances i tend to lose interest, i'm not really sure why lol

i thought it was interesting that compared to idol producer (of which i've seen s1 and part of s2), i feel like there weren't as many funny moments + i feel like i didn't get to know any of the trainees' personalities that well. like, with both pd101 and idol producer there are obviously going to be a lot of trainees that get little to no screen time who you don't get to know, but that's not what i mean

on pd101 the tone of the show was just more serious overall, and when they showed the trainees preparing for their stages or even the extra clips and interviews in between, everything felt very intentional. like with pretty much every clip i was like ah they're showing this to build this kind of narrative. and i don't think that's necessarily a bad thing, i think it is necessary to some extent bc in order to make an interesting show they do have to somehow build a cohesive narrative out of all the footage they have

but it just felt obvious that in order to create that cohesive narrative there were a lot of things that got left out and it felt inorganic. i think a good example of what i'm talking about is nayoung's nickname of "stone nayoung". even though i knew nayoung's name and face before watching pd101 bc of pristin, i'm not familiar with her personality or anything. and while i don't think they just pulled stone nayoung out of nowhere (they did have a lot of clips of her being expressionless), it felt like a very 1 dimensional portrayal of her, even to someone like me who doesn't know her personality

and again, i don't think this is necessarily a bad thing. same for trainees in the beginning of the show not getting much or any screen time, which i know is one of the big complaints about the produce franchise. like, with 101 contestants it's just impossible to give them all equal screen time and portray their personalities and talents accurately and complexly. so you have to focus on certain trainees and give them one or two memorable traits for the audience to follow along more easily

the problem arises when the producers edit trainees in a more negative light than they are or when they pre-determine who to give screen time to, as opposed to deciding screen time based on the trainees who are the most interesting or funny. which i'm pretty sure i've heard stories of both happening so yeah, even though i think the style of editing is somewhat necessarily, i'm still not giving mnet a pass on this one lol

granted it's been a hot minute since i watched idol producer, and i'm sure they also do this type of narrative building, but from my memory, the story wasn't as "tight". it felt like we did get more random and fun moments with the trainees throughout the show that made it easier to pick a personal favorite, rather than my favorites just being the ones who the editors seemed to want you to root for

my inability to pick a favorite might have also been influenced by me knowing some of the results + the fact that this aired a long time ago. i'm the type of person who naturally likes to root for an underdog, and also the type of person to root for people i'm familiar with. but all of the people i knew going into this (pledis trainees, chungha, somi) i knew or had a very good idea of whether or not they'd end up in ioi, so it felt pointless to root for them. even for those i didn't know the result of, it felt pointless since i knew it was in the past

and i remember feeling this a little bit too with idol producer s1, which i also watched retroactively. for that, i don't think i knew any of the results ahead of time but i still didn't feel as motivated to root for trainees since i knew whatever happened, happened. the shows where i was most passionate about my "picks" were the ones i watched as they were airing (idol producer s2 and the unit). i also think one of the reasons i could pick favorites more easily for idol producer s2 was bc i watched their introduction videos before the season started, which allowed me to see all the trainees without extra commentary, so it felt more "fair" to pick favorites that way ahead of the show

aside from the narrative aspect of the editing, as i said before, pd101 felt a lot more serious in tone than both idol producer seasons i've seen. and i'm certain this is mainly an editing choice, i don't think the idol producer trainees are like, inherently more goofy than the pd101s1 girls lol. and both ip and pd101 each have serious moments and lighthearted moments. but i just remember so may crack edits of ip on youtube, but i cannot for the life of me imagine anyone making a funny edit from pd101 DKJFH. maybe it exists, but after having just watched the show i can't imagine it lol. i also don't think either editing style is good or bad, they both make for interesting shows. but personally i do prefer the lightheartedness i remember from ip

i'll be curious to see whether this editing style is the difference between china and korea or if the style of the produce franchise as a whole just changed over time. i do plan to watch the other seasons to find out lol. but thinking about it, i do think the editing choices made a lot of sense for the debut season of produce. even though i didn't prefer it, i totally get why this show was so popular in the first place when it came out. the editing decisions they made really pull at your heartstrings not just for the sake of the 101 trainees, but also idol trainees in general

i'm sure that if anyone's reading this in the first place, there are people who are curious what my thoughts on the ioi members or the other trainees themselves are, but to be honest i don't really have a lot to say on that front 😅 like i said before, i feel like i didn't truly get to know anyone's personalities, and as for their skills it's now 6 years later and all the girls have pursued different paths, so i don't really think i can comment on that either. but i'm glad i watched it, and i'll think about the show whenever i see any of the pd101 girls in the future!

i'm still planning to watch the other seasons as well. i want to watch them in order so pd101 s2 will be up next! but i don't know when that will be since i'm planning to watch it with @minghaosmilfshirt and she's busy for the next little while :') and i want to wait until after the comeback anyway. i'll tentatively plan to liveblog the other seasons as well, though how much i actually do so will depend on how much i have to say. like i'm not going to force myself to post something every episode if i don't have anything interesting to say, which is why i didn't end up liveblogging too much for s1 in the end 😅

i feel like i might have a lot more to say for s2 since i'm a lot more familiar with some of the trainees going into it, but since i'll be watching it with someone else i'm not sure how that will go either lol. i'll figure it out one way or another!
