i finished pokemon violet! And i have some thoughts to share on it!

1)-

#i have lots of thoughts #obv a lot of cons #but the story…the personality and life given to these characters……..wonderful #disclaimer: i was given this game #otherwise i would not have played this at all lmao i had no intent of spending money on this game #but it was surprisingly enjoyable #i wouldnt recommend anyone buy the game but if u can *insert pirate yell* it #then u should take the time to play it; its a massive improvement from swsh #gameplay wise #graphically; not so much #the characters are fun and interesting #new lore for the series overall #(we EAT pokemon here; if u kill it well fry it ) #(gym leaders are just people who work per diem for challengers but they have their own real jobs somewhere else) #the friends u make are so good bc the pacing for their stories are good #arven…sweetie…. #also ENDGAME SPOILERS #the ending was so bittersweet it got me thinking of fix it scenarios #this game put a bit more emphasis on lost dreams and goals #and i think its just lovely #pokemon is all about finding ur dream or ur treasure so to speak #and to have so many people in this game say ‘i couldnt make it; it didnt work out for me’ just felt really refreshing #grusha injuring himself gravely and being unable to ski professionally #ms tyme retiring from being a leader bc she wanted to focus more on teaching #the professor chasing paradise for so long and with such drive #to abandon their son for this dream #and die before it could be realized bc of their own greed #like waow…. #do u think the professor realized their dream was unreachable as they bled out alone in the station #to sacrifice so much just to have nothing to show for it anymore

What’s special about guardians of the galaxy as well is I think it manages to walk the fine line of having death be present and something that could very much happen to our main characters but also choosing to keep them all alive at the end of the trilogy. Not only is it nice to see finished arcs but I’ve never once felt as if the stakes were not high in these films and could not result in a main character death. James Gunn does a good job at showing he isn’t afraid to go there with what happened with Yondu at the end of gotg 2 (and providing a very meaningful death to him beneficial to his arc) and to an extension even shows this with rockets friends (lyla teeths floor) in the third film. I 100% felt as if multiple guardians would die I’m this film and whilst it did come close everyone made it out okay! This is a change from what we see in previous media where the line has pushed to one side too much where it can get annoyingly repetitive and boring because there is no tension or, death can happen too frequently that it’s a joke.

So I guess the ultimate question is whose shadow is Touya? The answer will decide his fate...

Endeavor claims that Touya is just like him, which I think is part of the reason he can't truly believe he can be saved (just like Enji doesn't think he himself can be saved). With Hood, he tried to kill his shadow, with Touya, he can't think of anything else but die with him.

In this context, Touya getting his ice awakening feels like such a tragic moment. A last hurrah, just to rub it into Endeavor's face that he ruined his family over nothing. A last nail in a coffin already full of nails. Touya was always perfect. But it's too late because he'll never give up. Ironically, the ice is the final proof for Endeavor that he can't be saved. He's succumbing to hopelessness, and plays out the inevitable tragedy.

But I feel like Endeavor is misunderstanding everything once again. Touya's awakening is not about that. It is hugely symbolic that after - for the first time in his life - he imitated something other than his father (Shouto's Phosphor), at death's door, ice is flowing out of his heart to remind us that Touya is more than Endeavor's shadow, more than just the culmination of his sins, more than the monster of his own creation.

Just like the other kids, Touya is a unique mix of his parents, he's part Rei, he's part ice, he has had in his heart hope for the family and kept trying until he broke, just like his mom. And maybe feeling his mom's quirk, internalizing that he's more than just a failed experiment of his father, more than a manifestation of his murderous flames, he will be able to connect with the ice-users of the family. See their power and strength. He will see that he's his mother's son, Natsuo's and Fuyumi's "Touya-nii". Maybe, just maybe he will start to gain a sense of his full self.

And importantly, maybe he can start to realize that he's not that different from Shouto. He's a masterpiece too. Someone who can decide their own reason to exist. Someone who can change and be saved.

The ice comes out like a small flower, the first sign of stubborn life after a devastating forest fire on Sekoto peak. It's the symbol of a hopeful ending.
