May 2024 Wk 2

Ongoing Series - Thai

Wandee Godday (Sat YT) ep 2 of 12 - Oh it’s fucking great. It could all go horribly south, of course. But it’s awesome at the moment. Messy gay and one of them is already pining? Got to love it. Including the negotiation.

I’d love a good sex negotiation, it’s almost as good as linguistic negotiation. This show makes me happy. All that said, it’s moving awfully quickly for a 12 episode run. Not sure what’s gonna happen on the backend.

My Stand-In (Thai Fri iQIYI) ep 3 of 12 eps - I’m still enjoying it but I’m ready for him to die again now.

We Are (Weds iQIYI) ep 5-6 of 16 - Toey is going after the Namgoong Award for Best Wingman this year, I see. And in exchange, literally all the rest of the friends are going to be his wingmen. It’s adorable. I also like that Phuwin got to be the aggressor for the first kiss. I like that this is mostly just boys flirting, and not really any prescribed seme/uke stuff. In general, I think these last two episodes I improved the show in my regard a lot. But then middles are always GMMTV's strong point, it’s whether they can stick the landing that’s an issue.

Two Worlds (Thurs iQIYI) ep 9 of 10 - Apparently we have the Frodo walking into Mordor episode. Also the sides were cute. In Thailand (like Taiwan) all gangsters are gay, apparently.

Only Boo! (Sun YouTube) ep 5 of 12 - It’s cute but very cringe and dorky. Silly singing. Terrible pickup lines. Still, that was a ridiculously charming confession.

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

Unknown (Taiwan Tues YouTube & Viki) ep 12fin - Oh so good. Very few shows that feature one-sided long-term pining of this kind can resolve the unevenness of that power dynamic into a more stable and equal footing with such class. We really got to see the object of the desire turn completely around and become equally besotted. An age gap, stepbrothers trope like this one is hard enough but at this length? Very well acted boys! Unknown managed to show the older brother softening in a believable way that’s pretty unusual in narratives of this type.

All in all?

Unknown is a wonderful BL with a pitch perfect portrayal of long term pining, age gap, and the stepbrothers trope. The acting and chemistry are ON POINT (especially from the leads) which made the resulting characters very believable. When it dwells in intimate family drama, it's stunning. It's slightly less successful when it leaves the home and goes gritty. It's few flaws are the result of curtailed length. It could have used more breathing room to deal with side plots, characters, and companion character development. The editing was occasionally choppy and packed with flashbacks that broke the emotional tension. Still, those are mere quibbles. This is an excellent show that I know I'm going to be recommending a lot. 9/10

Finally Taiwan hits another one out of the park.

Blue Boys (Korea Sat YouTube) 4 of ? - Oh it’s so good, and they are so tortured and it’s just charming and I can’t EVEN. I just love it. I love that Korea is giving us this right now. You’re an idiot if you’re not watching this show, it’s truly spectacular.

At 25:00 in Akasaka AKA 25 Ji Akasaka de (Japan Thurs Gaga) ep 4 of 10 - Well well well Japan. I see how you kneed. I enjoyed this episode better than the first two, and I am way into our Bad Boy second lead. I can already feel myself succumbing to the syndrome. Next week = the obligatory onsen ep!

Living With Him AKA Kare no Iru Seikatsu (Japan Thurs Gaga) ep 5 of 10 - Omg most adorbs failed linguistic negotiation.

Boys Be Brave AKA Roommates (Korea Thurs Viki) ep 5-6 of 8 - I love the side couple. It’s a shame we’re finally getting some truly great class conflict and it’s relegated to crumbs.

Love is like a Cat (Korea Mon Viki) eps 11-12fin - Well that was a waste of time. There was no connection (of any kind) between the leads. The language thing was hella weird and likely added to that. The past history of the Korean character was necessary to know from the start, its lack throughout, meant there was no depth to his character. They tried to tackle all the interesting stuff in the final 2 eps. AND they even killed the dog. I never thought I'd type this sentance, but Peach of Time is better.

I don’t know. 5/10 I guess

All in all:

A disappointing lackluster and barely cohesive BL about a jerk Thai actor (speaking Thai) who has to work for a Korean animal rescue cafe as a publicity stunt. It's difficult to believe the leads like each other, let alone fall in love. The acting is stiff, the characters lack motivation and cohesion, and there's not much to recommend this show beyond some pretty visuals. Also, they kill the dog. All in all, a disappointing and unsuccessful joint venture that mostly highlighted that between Thailand and Korea the style of BL, narrative approach, language cadence, and acting techniques all clash.

It's airing but...

Lady Boy Friends (Thai WeTV grey) 16 eps - reminds me a bit too much of Diary of Tootsies only high school. Not my thing. DNF unless it turns a corner and is truly amazing.

You Made My Day (Thai YT) ep 1 of 5 - mini series staring the I Will Knock You couple Tar & Bom, started but I couldn't find it. I also didn't try very hard.

A Balloon's Landing (Taiwan movie) trailer - A frustrated Hong Kong writer, Tian Yu, meets a Taipei street gangster, Xiang (Fandy Fan from HIStory2: Crossing the Line), and the two of them embark on a journey to find the Bay of Vanishing Whales. Along the way, they discover unexpected twists and turns and close bonds, which brings out the message that "there is always someone like you in this world who is waiting for you. This released to cinemas in Taiwan, no word on international release.

Memory in the Letter (Thai WeTV) - it's done, tell me if I should bother?

Someone asked in a comment (which tumblr promptly ate) about group sleepovers in BLs. It's happened a few times but the only one I can recall being noted and particularly lovely (and VERY college) was in Nitiman. There's also one in Lovesick.

23.5 Ep 9 Stray Thoughts

Last week, the gang went to the school to watch a meteor shower together with the understanding of the romance overtones involved. Ongsa spent most of the episode flubbing making a move on Sun, but they ended up getting a decent kiss under the stars. Aylin remains one of the best characters in romance because she didn’t need any cajoling to ask Luna to watch the meteor shower with her nor to confess her feelings. Mawin came so close to properly asking Tinh out, but got too nervous. Ton was rejected by Chaoren, and ended up giving me crumbs with Mawin (Euro can still win, guys). My teacher yuri dreams continued to burn bright.

Laying on the floor like this doesn’t exactly look comfortable, but is the kind of silliness I’ve walked in on lesbians doing before.

Episode 9: When the Earth Tilts

Aylin trying to be more social with her family is actually quite adorable.

Thank you, Luna, for always keeping things clear with Aylin. These four are really fun together. Sun is so consistent about this not-hiding approach.

I feel for Alpha. She’s the oldest and her sister and cousin are going through things without telling her anything.

I hope the teacher hit Alpha with a Mama Sandwich. I haven’t seen one in years since The Fosters ended.

I kinda wish we’d spent more time with Alpha before all of this.

Okay, the towel drop was a nice touch. As with everything with the mains, I don’t think we got here smoothly, but I enjoyed the moment.

This show is so awkward. I’m not sure what’s going on and why it feels so off every week. I like individual moments but I have a hard time reflecting on this show and remembering things that occurred in the order in which they happened.

RANDOM THOUGHTS: Two Worlds ep. 10

It’s the last episode. Besides hoping Khram will come back to Thai’s world (hopefully with his dad) all I want in this episode is more Wayu and Jao moments. Please give me more than breadcrumbs!

It’s nice to see Khram reunited with his dad. So, we’re off to a relatively good start.

Khram coughing like that is not a good sign, is it?

So, Khram is supposed to save the Thai from his world now?

Oh, the memories striking Thai.

Will this turn out to be the story from now on, that this Thai will remember the moments with Khram that the Thai from the other world has and get closer to Khram for that reason? Similar to the way Khram got closer to the Thai from the other world.

Honestly, I’m watching a lot of this at double speed…

Wait, is that Thai from the other world? Is he really there? No. Nope…

Double speed again…

That Thai wasn’t actually the one who killed Khram’s mom was pretty obvious since we never actually saw it happen.

And we’re back in the other world. With a heartbroken Thai.

And two minutes later, we’re back with Khram.

Double speed again…

The blood is alarming. He’s not in a good condition, is he?

Will this Thai search for that fruit that can help Khram?

Thai from the other world is reminiscing his cozy times with Khram in that cave. It’s so sad. Reunite already.

Can I get some Wayu and Jao moments? I’m on my knees begging.

So, Khram’s reaction to this Thai’s death, will that make him realize he needs to find some way back to Thai from the other world? They have both watched different versions of the other person die. It’s time to stop suffering and reunite, right?

If I’d been more into this episode than I am, I’m sure I would’ve teared up at Khram crying for Thai. But I’m not that into it. Give me some Wayu and Jao and I promise I’ll be fully alert.

Oh, is that Thai from the other world? Can they actually see each other? Yes, it is. He’s wet too. He must’ve come from the lake.

OMFG! Did Wayu and Jao practically propose to each other at the same time? Wait, was that all I got? Those 15-ish seconds?! I got to be fully alert for 15 seconds?! That’s a whole TikTok…

I’m so happy it’s over, lol.

Wait, there’s more? Well, we can’t end without some sexy time.

That was the next best thing in this episode, after Wayu and Jao’s 15 seconds, of course.

Is it over now? Yes, it is.

The creators of this series knew how to manipulate me to watch the whole damn thing, lol. Waiting with Wayu and Jao finally hooking up until the next to last episode clearly worked. I feel so used…

Don’t get me wrong, Max is great. Nat is great. But Wayu and Jao were the reason I kept watching. I wanted the whole damn loaf but it only felt like crumbs in the end. Ah, well…

40 days and 40 nights! We’re inching closer to the premiere and all the beautiful pain and pleasure I’m sure it will serve. Only a few new crumbs in show news this week (oh S4 trailer, where art thou?), but we did get a little something from the entire cast this week.

Riley was featured in Station 19 this week as Capt. Farris the union leader as I’d shared in an earlier blog. I enjoyed his scene, look forward to more in the season finale as he shared on IG!

Speaking of the dads, Scott shared an early headshot - so adorable!

Meanwhile Leah’s mind was blown when she found out Elemental is closing out Cannes this year, while Kennedy admitted how much pain the final Aglaeca era episode caused (we feel you) in answer to Katie’s complaint about the crew’s amnesia about the fact that they all agreed willingly to call to the sea monster even when Nancy tried to convince them not to.

Maddison is visiting England (but tried out an Irish accent with mixed results):

And regarding the men of the Drew Crew, we got another look at Tunji in Queen Charlotte (those curls!) with young Lady Danbury (premiers May 4), while Alex’s series High Desert got a trailer - it’s premiering May 17 with the first 3 episodes, while he will be in eps. 6-8. His gf also shared some more pics from her birthday weekend.

In show news, a few more featured actors popped up on IMDB. We have a second nurse and a new named character, Maggie Lake, in Episode 2, the comic episode featured in the M3gan trailer, and a new character named Keith in Episode 6, the Larry Teng special effects driven extravaganza that Kennedy told us had someone dying “a little”.

I think you should do a post after every Tsurune ep, it's really cathartic to read your thoughts!

If I keep getting messages asking for it, then sure! I’m sorry for being so slow with them, though. Grad school entrance exams are draining away every ounce of my sanity. :^)

I guess this ask means you want a review of episode 5 as well, so here we go! Again, sorry for the wait!

So this episode delivers a lot more of the novel that we didn’t get on S1, such as Kaito and Nanao’s family. I love that we finally got to see their moms and sisters, as well as the fact that they often do get-togethers. Bonus for showing what kinds of pronouns/nicknames they use for each other.

We also get more of the girls’ team being an actual part of the club. Getting a new menu for practice, actively interacting with the boys, helping with prep and cleaning, having screen time doing their own training and officially becoming a team of competitors instead of just... being there.

In the middle of the episode, there’s one more peek at Ryouhei’s house (first one was in episode 2) and at long last, his sister shows up! We only see her back but that’s still something. We’re gradually getting eased into what is probably the second most complicated family of the whole series, and I like that the way KyoAni is going about it is exactly how I’d pictured. Well, more like how I wished S1 was.

Most importantly, perhaps for the very first time in the anime, we got to see Minato thinking about Masaki for no reason. I know this doesn’t sound important, but if I were to pinpoint what Minato’s most frequent habit is in canon, I’d say it’s thinking about Masaki. Whenever Minato is thinking of anything in the novel, Masaki pops right up. That, of course, if he wasn’t already thinking about Masaki to begin with. I don’t remember a single scene from any of the three volumes where Minato is thinking or worrying about something without Masaki hijacking his mind. And it’s never accidental or even incidental. Masaki is one of Minato’s main concerns. He thinks of Masaki about as much as he thinks of his own life. Partly because, one way or another, Masaki is always involved in whatever aspect of his life he’s thinking about. And now KyoAni has given us a small, tiny crumb of that. True allies.

At this point, a good portion of this season feels like a catch-up to S1. Many events of volume 2 are being either omitted or cut out so that there's enough space for the content we didn’t get in S1 to be inserted in this one.

Now, as in every episode, for all the canon-compliant content we get, we get just as much (if not double) non-compliant content.

This episode gives us Nanao and Kaito in a symbiosis. Nanao takes care of Kaito, Kaito protects Nanao. They’re essentially opposites who complete each other. If you take out the OOC-ness, there’s no problem with this choice of narrative... except maybe for the fact that it’s extremely overused. I’ve talked about this before but I feel the need to stress out once again that trying to use formulas that have worked for other series isn’t an effective way to garner more popularity. It actually tends to do the contrary. I do have a lot of respect for the original work’s tendency to avoid that at all costs. Instead, it takes the most common tropes and subverts them. Nanao and Kaito have everything to fall into that commonplace storyline, but the author is having none of it.

Novel!Kaito and Nanao are opposites, true, yet not the kind of opposites who complete each other. Rather, the opposite that completes Kaito is Seiya, but KyoAni is still pretending that Seiya has this exact kind of relationship with Minato instead, so as I mentioned when I talked about episode 4, someone has to fill up that hole. Nanao has been replacing Seiya ever since S1, but I guess KyoAni realized how weird and incesty it looked with it being so one-sided. We only had Nanao obsessively looking out for Kaito in the same way that Seiya obsessively looked after Minato, except there was no deeper reason behind it like there was with Seiya (as in feeling guilty for the death of Minato’s mother). So now this relationship is being balanced out, making it a two-way avenue.

In the novel, Kaito’s been looking after Nanao ever since they were little kids because his aunt asked him to. Nanao had always drawn in the attention of the people around him, and this earned him both favor and disfavor. We’ve seen that in this episode. What we didn’t see, though, is that, because of this, Nanao’s mother asked Kaito to protect him, and the result is that Kaito eventually grew up to be Nanao’s dad. Nanao was well-aware of this and often used it to his advantage. Basically, novel!Kaito is an unwilling “father” with a willing “son” and novel!Seiya is a willing “mother” with an unwilling “son”. He and Seiya have that in common; they’re natural-born caretakers, except Kaito doesn’t realize that he’s in this position. It’s just automatic for him. He’s probably been doing this for longer than Seiya has. That last bit was also shown in this episode, but it was instead presented as Kaito taking the burden on his own accord and compared to Seiya taking on the role of Minato’s watchful eye.

In short, the novel draws a parallel between Kaito and Seiya and uses it as a plot device for their relationship, while the anime draws a parallel between Kaito and Nanao's relationship and Minato and Seiya's relationship. The reason why I'm iffy about this is that it acts as if Kaito taking on other people's burdens is something that he simply does out of nowhere. There doesn’t seem to be much reason for it. With Nanao, we can understand, because that’s his family, but what about him trying to take part of the blame for Minato’s screw-up? This is being presented to us as a habit of his, except with no motive other than “that’s just how he is”.

In the canon, that's not how things go. Kaito does have a lot of concerns regarding the people around him, but as any normal person, he won't break boundaries. If he's not being let into someone else's affairs, he won't butt in, no matter how much he wants to. I dare say that this is a major character trait of his and that is what makes him endearing. He's impulsive as shit, but when he sees that he might hurt someone's feelings or that his input won’t be constructive, he backs off. That’s contra-intuitive for the readers, as we go in expecting him to be the cliche that the anime is giving us, but he isn’t. It’s a pleasant surprise.

And just to put it out there, as far as canon goes, there's literally nothing that Kaito wants more than for Seiya to let him into his personal business. He really wishes that Seiya would share the load with him and that is the main source of his character conflicts in the novels. It sometimes even feels like a parallel to Masaki and Minato, where Minato often makes reluctant mental notes on the fact that Masaki hides a lot of stuff from him. Both Masaki and Seiya are described, from Minato and Kaito’s POVs respectively, as having too many secrets. But that's too gay for TV. A gayness that is worsened by the fact that we never get any explanation for this in the novel. Like, none. Kaito isn't like this with anyone else and the text never goes "it's all because of their strong friendship" on these two. Instead, it gives us a love song as the literal only allusion to their relationship. Go figure.

Can't be having that bullshit in the anime, so change it KyoAni shall. Because anime!Kaito started doing this entirely on his own instead of it being a request from his aunt, we’re getting a different dynamic. KyoAni is adamant about Seiya being Minato’s knight-in-shining-armor (even without him getting the glory for it in this season), and without his presence, Kaito was reduced to an onboxious, arrogant little shit without much personality other than being dedicated to nothing but archery and acting mean to everyone except the teachers in S1. Nanao was there as a plot device in order to make Kaito remotely likable and also so that he’d have some inkling of personality himself, given that most of his lines had gone to Seiya. Yet now he’s here to complement Kaito and vice-versa. In building them like that, KyoAni has turned them into Minato and Seiya, except with a rivalry added to it.

From a storytelling point of view, I find this repetition and lack of creativity to be rather underwhelming. And on a personal level, I still think the way KyoAni goes on about Kaito and Nanao’s relationship is tad creepy. It’s just weird and off-putting to see two cousins mourning so sorely the fact that they’re slowly breaking free from this take-what-you-give system they’ve developed over time. In the novel, Kaito is Nanao’s nanny, sure, but it’s literally just small everyday life things that he does, such as helping Nanao carry heavy luggage or patching him up when he gets hurt during practice. That’s as far as it goes, just like Seiya caring for Minato only goes as far as offering him tea and towels during breaks or nursing him when he gets sick (that, of course, after Seiya has had proper closure from his personal conflicts and stopped being paranoid over Minato’s wellbeing). It’s all pretty normal and chill, fitting perfectly within the scope of what relatives and/or best friends do for each other. And the closest it gets to anything marginally negative is Kaito pointing to Seiya that he’s babying Minato too much while Seiya retorts that Kaito babies Nanao too much, which Kaito is in complete denial about.

I'm also not behind the rivalry between Kaito and Nanao. It totally overshadows the one between Minato and Shuu, and narrative-wise, that's not supposed to happen. It also makes any other sort of rivalry from this point on to feel somewhat repetitive and it doesn't have much of a reason to exist other than cover up for the fact that Nanao and Kaito have no personality otherwise. Besides, it's a contradiction, as far as the boys' skills go. Nanao is a great archer, but he isn't supposed to be able to compete with Kaito. Kaito being the ace is what makes him the oomae to begin with.

Anyway, case in point. I'm not digging this route in the anime, but I’m just gonna turn a blind eye to it. I think we’ve earned a lot of positive stuff from this mess.

Yeah, the flashbacks had some weird undertones. But they were accurate. Everything we got in them after the innitial parts that show the beginning of the duo’s symbiosis is completely in tune with canon. The difference is that we got this in the books in the form of description, while the anime has given us actual scenes, with dialogue and all that. They even include a nod to S1′s drama CD, which elaborates on Kaito and Masaki’s first meeting (something that we also only get in the form of a monologue in the novel).

Speaking of monologues, I like that we’re finally getting some stuff from Nanao’s point of view. In S1, we see very little of him and only through other characters. This time, he’s being his own person and although he’s very toned-down in the anime (just like everyone else, really), that’s still his canon personality. He’s a lot less sparkly than his canon counterpart, but the essence of his character is indeed being presented to us viewers. Add that to the fact that he’s been given his original hairstyle in this season, and there you have it. At long last, it feels like I’m finally seeing Kisaragi Nanao in the anime for the very first time.

Not just that; I feel like we’re also properly seeing his relationship with other characters for the first time. In S1, we basically only got snippets of his relationship with Kaito and that’s it. Here, though, we’ve been getting to see not just a deeper look into said relationship but also him interacting significantly with other characters. The other boys analyzing him and Kaito, looking out for them, knowing them. These boys are on each other's radars. That’s some refreshing shit right there. At last, it feels like we're watching a series about a group of friends. I especially like the emphasis on Minato and Nanao's interaction. Another thing from volume 1 that's being added here. Better late than never.

I gotta confess that every time KyoAni fixes something they left a hole in during S1, it’s as if the fact that something was missing the whole time is being thrown in our faces. It also somehow feels like KyoAni is offering us an apology with each of these little fixes. It leaves a bitter aftertaste, but frankly, I appreciate the effort.

In conclusion, I can overlook the creepy vibes that Kaito and Nanao’s relationship give me in the anime because the pros are worth the cons in my book. But here’s where I draw the line: Kaito being portrayed as violent.

Kaito is described in the novel, throughout all three volumes, as “aggressive”. Because he is. Just not physically. He’s quick-tempered and he runs his mouth when he’s mad, and he’ll go as far as glaring and closing up distance with whoever he’s having a heated discussion with, but never, ever, has he laid a hand on anyone. As far as canon goes, Minato and Seiya are much more likely to throw fist than Kaito. The closest he’s gotten to hitting someone was in a scene where Eisuke insults Kazemai to their faces and he almost loses it, but his arm accidentally hits Seiya’s glasses and knocks them to the floor, which gives him immediate regret. The thing nobody should ever forget about Kaito is that he’s dense and inept, but he has a pure heart.

So Kaito punching his former teammate back in the day? Whack.

Kaito getting pissed during practice and being disrespectful in the dojo? Whack.

Kaito pulling Nanao and Seiya’s collars? Fucking whack, my dudes.

I know that the anime isn’t depicting Kaito like he’s an asshole. Rather, he’s being treated as a reckless kid who takes things too seriously and pushes his feelings and values onto other people. That’s how the novel treats him as well. But the whole point of Kaito is that he seems menacing yet isn’t. He’ll talk shit, sure, but it takes a lot to make him even be willing to physically harm someone. This felt like one of the by-the-book safe-formula things that KyoAni has added to the series because they learned it from Free!, and I’m not a fan of it.

There are things in this episode that I'm a fan of, though. I think the frame composition in this one was especially good. I specially love the way that Kaito and Nanao were placed in all sorts of yin-yang ways on-screen (even though this is something that's supposed to be a Minato and Shuu thing, I'm just taking whatever I can get). But above all, I love the way that Seiya and Kaito are poisitioned in the scenes where they appear together. Finally, the anime is beginning to take a step on closing the distance between them. The physical distance, at least. Their relationship is still nothing like it is in canon, but maybe this is a hint that they will get somewhere near the general area of how deeply connected they are in the books. Maybe.

There's some more stuff that I wanna give my two cents on, but I gotta take a look at the next episodes to make a judgement, so I'll leave just this here for now!

What are your thoughts on the adoption storyline having been planted at the end of s6? If they didn’t receive word of cancellation until well after filming the first ep of s7, then it feels like the plan was always for the story to head in that direction. And now I feel like maybe having Carina mention so many times how much she wanted to get pregnant was intentional. Now they can gear the storyline toward infertility angst or something like that.

Has it even been confirmed they adopt the baby? What if we’re all expecting that and the “choice” they make is moving or something way different? 😆

Fandom tends to run with whatever crumbs get thrown. I guess we’ll find out soon!

It's starting to sound like maybe once Peter took over, adoption was always going to be the plan. I'm not sure if we'll ever know that for sure though and I think if they didn't get abruptly cancelled and we got future seasons, they could have ended up doing both anyway and showed the IVF process the correct way instead of whatever nonsense 5B was. But I do fear with the shortened season and having to 'wrap' things up they are going to go down an infertility route with Carina which would just be such a shame for several reasons.

It could be different but all signs seem to be pointing to adopting the baby lol luckily we find out in less than 24 hours!!

u know what fuck it . ive already had 3 kind of accurate predictions so im gonna throw one last very wishful thinking inspired prediction out into the world for the last ep . if the universe is kind it will make my hopes happen and if not then. i will go lie down in a ditch and cry i guess (under the cut bc wow this got a bit long)

patpran Do break up for realsies. no fakery or going back to secret dating or anything. they decide that the times just not right for them, and that if they can only have either their relationship or their familys support, they need the latter more

the scene of them telling their parents Does happen . they Do react like the shit parents they are. hate to say this but its extremely in-character for them its very real so

they announce said break up to everyone at uni. they all think theyre joking or had some fight while they were gone. maybe here patpran explain their full history to their friends (if they havent already)??? anyways none of them are happy about this

insert extremely sad snippets of them just watching each other from afar or looking at the guitar/watch/pick/shirt/earphones/god theyve shared so much shit help with painful yearning . everyone notices

the time skip is Not Real. either some kind of what-if scenario or a dream/daydream/nightmare sequence most likely thought up by pat, imagining them staying away from each other all those years. the reunion part is him yearning and hoping they can get back together one day because of Course he’d want that

irl though, perhaps like a montage of patpran having different demeanors around their family?? like them just Not acting the same as before, being less energetic, less responsive, etc, and here is when parents start to get concerned

both parents apologizing to their kids for everything because i am a tired asian who just wants to see some fictional parents admit their fault For Once !!! if nothing else this is the one thing id want to manifest in the ep

and then ummmm. scene of them asking patpran to meet them together and (cries) telling them that theyre ok with it if theyre dating and (sobs) and that theyd support them and (wails) and

yeah and then like . real montage of how things Actually end for them w them getting back together and really going to the reunion together and graduating and . Just Being Happy!!!! they deserve it!!!!!! maybe a hint to s2 with inkpa or waikorn crumbs and thats it thats the ending thanks for coming to my tedtalk

Motel California rewatch!

I actually got excited about watching this episode so here are my liveblog thoughts on it.

K all the shade they’re throwing at this motel when it looks like a lot of motels I stayed in growing up…

Wait, if Scott hasn’t seen Star Wars he shouldn’t have gotten Stiles’s Yoda reference in s1. An Obi-Wan reference is about on par with that. I hate inconsistencies in my MTV scripted shows!

This is why Stiles is the best character. “Yeah Boyd just punched through the vending machine glass and didn’t say a word. That’s all kind of unsettling, but I’m still gonna grab a few snacks before running off scared.”

Allison’s “ssslightly naked” is such good delivery. She sells this really creeped-out vibe very well.

The dialogue in this show is…charmingly quirky. “We’re not gonna be on the top of anyone’s list for customer satisfaction” nobody talks like that! Nobody would say that. It’s kinda cute though, in a weird way. Feeds my pedantic self. Thanks, Jeff!

Derek’s scenes are so out of place in this ep. And emblematic of the show’s overall Derek problem

Jennifer sweetheart. His incredible physique? Your first date? Again, not things people say! Especially in such dire circumstances.

I can’t believe Lydia overheard the ending of The Originals in the other motel room

I always look for screaming faces in wood panels too (I’m not even joking)

Also I love how the mystery of this place is never solved. Never explained. It could have something to do with the Darach, but it’s not confirmed or even likely. This is just…a creepy place.

iconic moment (seoul music awards 2019) taehee took mirror selfies as she waited for chaeyoung to finish up in the bathroom. when chaeyoung found out, she later posted these on instagram with the caption, “the one who i love 😍❤️”.

(seoul music awards 2019) before the two groups walked by each other, taehee slowed down her pace and let herself stay behind the group to greet the main rapper of stray kids. once jisung was within arm’s reach from her, she raised her hand for a high-five, to which jisung pulled her into a bro-hug instead. he whispered something to her first and ruffled her hair, making the older girl hit his shoulder softly, laughing as he left.

jisung introduced taehee to chan and felix and she now has two new aussie buddies that remind her of home too !!!!!

iconic moment (isac 2019) stayzens went batshit crazy when skz had to pass by nct during the sports competition. seeing this as a chance to be playful with his best friend, jisung jumped over the first row of seats and proceeded to whisper something to taehee (who was seated very near to where the other members of skz were by the way), before jumping over to the third row. jisung must have said something really funny to taehee since it made the female idol to turn away laughing as she covered her mouth. later on, we see the two talk, inviting a very excited chan and a shy mark lee to the conversation.

red velvet’s yeri, april’s naeun, and weki meki’s doyeon

yeri and taehee were already close since trainee days (she’s close with the rest of red velvet too). taehee knew yeri was friends with naeun and she was Dying to meet her so yeri introduced them to each other, and since doyeon is friends with naeun, the latter later introduced all three of them to each other.

yeri and taehee always sat beside each other whenever nct is asked to share a table with red velvet. yeri would laugh a lot since taehee’s always so energetic when she dances to the other groups’ songs. she always hung out with red velvet during isac but would end up having yeri to herself anyways ,,, they teased each other a lot too.

taehee Loves naeun, literally. she’s always flirting with her and telling her how pretty and cute she is. naeun was flustered at first but now she’s used to it lol. taehee would literally just stare at naeun with a loving smile during pre-performance interviews in inkigayo ,, naeun does the same whenever it’s time for taehee to say her lines ^ ^ and whenever they would accidentally make eye contact, they crack up and try to hide their giggles.

taehee was kinda intimidated of doyeon at first ,,, but she thought she was a chill type of person. turns out doyeon had a lot of cute charms in her and taehee always finds herself calling her cute when she does so. they are literally a power duo. whenever the two are mentioned together, fans would gush about how good they would look in a photoshoot together.

iconic moment (yeri bang ep. 11-1) “doyeon’s and taehee’s styles are similar. right?” yeri asks as she picks out beads for the bracelet she’s putting together for taehee. “taehee would want something that goes well with her outfit. she mostly wears monotone or beige colors,” naeun points out.

“ahh naeun, you know me so well,” taehee cooes, and clearly, her eyes were in the shape of hearts. seeing as the she got ignored, yeri drops her mouth open feigning offense. “why didn’t you give me a reaction like that?” she whines, “i knew you before naeun!!!”

“she’s just really interested in naeun,” doyeon hums casually, making the other girls laugh as taehee stood up from her seat. “HEY!!! that’s making me sound like a bad friend and i’m not.”

“are you really?” yeri continues to tease her, causing the said girl to whine and hug her in embarrassment.

they’ve met and exchanged numbers in a music show early in their debuts.

she’s the closest with rosé and lisa since their age gap is quite smaller compared to jennie and jisoo.

there have been fancams of taehee watching blackpink perform and once jisoo was on the monitor, we’d see taehee mutter, “ahh she’s really pretty.”

taehee visits blackpink’s table once every award show, and jennie would be so attentive and welcoming of her — fixing her hair, being genuinely interested in what she’s saying, and laughing at her jokes. she was seen clinging onto taehee’s waist at some point, jennie adores taehee :(

lisa thinks of taehee as her little brother. she’s just as energetic as her and taehee’s jokes are what lisa finds so funny. she would join in on a few of rosé and taehee’s hangouts and take lots and lots of pictures of them (and jokingly get mad if one of the girls don’t give her credit when they post on instagram).

Last week, Sailom continued to baffle me by refusing to accept literally anyone’s help and then cried in a shower as he thanked Kanghan because he thought he was all alone 😑. Name is apparently “not that bad” because he pulled a gun on his boss in the dumbest way possible and then showed up at the hospital to shoot his boss before he could kill Kanghan’s dad. I think Kanghan got shot??

Final Verdict: 3, This Was Not It. I absolutely did not enjoy watching this show at all for the last ten episodes. This show does not take Sailom or poverty seriously. This show was high-key offensive the entire time. The show wants to do this thing with people with means interacting with those without, but they do it in such a slapdash way and primarily from the perspective of the wealthy that it comes off as deeply condescending. To make matters worse, Perth and Chimon's chemistry did not come through to save this at all. After two outings in high school this year together, I'm just not into them as a pair. We thought they would be strong together, but I am not impressed. I do not recommend this show at all if you wanna take any part of it seriously. If you just wanna look at faces it might be fine, but this was not the fun kind of trash I can enjoy. One fucking chop.

cont. unpop: they already wasted half a season and we got only crumbs of anything Maya (who she is) related. Like e.g. the whole fkn first episode was just to say - Maya is in denial. Like we need 1-2 clips to show that but no lets have several clips that say the same thing. Another example - you have 20 min episode and you waste time with a 5 min clip just to say that Maya is going on a date. I am sorry, but I am getting frustrated. S9 is becoming EVERYTHING that I didn´t want from Maya season

i strongly disagree that “they’ve already wasted half a season and we got only crumbs of anything maya related”. every clip so far tells you something about maya (her health, trauma, family, desires, current and changing mindset, history, relationships etc), it’s just often more subtle than skamfr usually is lol; maya’s not the ‘dramatic monologue about my issues’ type. kinda talked about the same thing here but this season is imo better paced (and just better) than 6-8 precisely bc it’s slower, and i think the main reason for that is bc no traumatic random theme was thrown at her in the trailer. the theme is more a character study than anything else, and maya is a mysterious, repressed character; i kinda think people should’ve maybe adjusted their expectations with what this season would be like based on those facts 🥴 like personally i think taking a week for her to be in denial was a really good move character wise: having her accept it was over within 1-2 clips in ep1 is just…not in character and not true of the situation. jo says lola’s come back every time before, so it was important for maya to understand that lola isn’t this time and understand why - this directly sets her off on analyzing her own behavior and eventually arriving at that why; if she’d been like damn it MUST be serious if it’s really over, mid ep1, it’d feel a little rushed and ooc to me?? like her breakup denial imo directly connects to the point about her not crying in 10yrs, so.

don’t get me wrong lol there’s def been clips (mostly ones with jo 🥴) where i’m like, does it need to be this long?? could we shorten this?? take out some banter and focus more on maya?? but i have no idea what you mean by “you have a 20min episode and you waste time with a 5min clip just to say maya’s going on a date” bc all the date related clips were in the 33min ep? which is the longest skamfr ep ever i believe? (for what it’s worth i do have other criticisms about this season, i’ve just been keeping them in the DMs and notes app, i’ll talk about them more later probably)

anyways tl;dr: so far the slow-ish pace works for me and imo works with maya’s character (and is personally refreshing compared to 6-8’s constant movement), i think the first 5 eps have set some really good stuff up, the issue is as always whether they’ll stick the landing, which we’ll find out soon enough. i don’t understand how anyone thinks we’ve wasted 5 eps, and if you think we’re only getting crumbs then idk if we’ll ever agree tbh 🥴😅 repetition IS annoying (which is one reason why i’m feeling dread about this plot), but i think repeating things is also realistic to someone like maya and a good way to cement character traits, so. idk! see you tomorrow i guess?

You said it! If this is supposed to be a love story over a decade in the making, they shouldn't have to be "throwing fans a bone" by allowing the two of them to even interact. This is THE love story for a main character and it's disappointing that fans are having to beg for scraps, and even that is only the fans that follow the actors that are keeping the hope alive. I doubt anyone who hasn't seen Valmis in head-to-toe Malex gear talking about how in love they are even has a clue the two of them might still be a thing.

Yeah, and even fans who have seen him in head-to-toe Malex gear for an entire hiatus are struggling to stay positive.

I think it's a real problem, that TPTB don't understand how damn insecure we are about the whole thing, how little faith in showrunners, in general, we actually have, and that trust in them doing right by us doesn't come naturally after watching a million other shows handling queer ships rather badly. We don't come from a place of confidence and certainty. We're always in free fall, not knowing whether we'll ever get what we want.

All the vague teasing and maybes they think are cool and a way to advertise the show - that's NOT exciting to us, it's a terrifying reminder of how wrong it can all go in a heartbeat, bc it happened so many times before. Queer ships and fans of queer ships are rarely treated well, a "maybe" way too often turned into "LOL, you wish".

I keep repeating myself, but Wynonna Earp and Schitt's Creek are the only shows I can think of, where WE showrunner Emily Andras and SC showrunner Dan Levy kept reassuring fans in pretty much every interview, that fans didn't need to be afraid, and that the queer ships would definitely get their HEA.

That knowledge and the constant reassurance made all the ups and downs those ships went through so much more enjoyable to watch bc it was always clear, that they would end up together, and be happy.

As a shipper of several queer ships over the years, I've never had the luxury of that kind of assurance before. All I've known is either

no canon queer ships in most shows

tons of queerbaiting without actually making fan-favorite queer ships happen

when there were canon queer ships, they were often treated badly, didn't get a HEA, characters were killed off, and so on

So, most of us really don't come from a place of trust. We're used to only ever getting crumbs, being treated like we're weird [for shipping characters that are not together in canon, especially when the characters are supposedly straight], and not getting what we so desperately want (and yet keep begging for).

With RNM, we were rather well-fed from the pilot up to ep 1x06 - we got so much amazing Malex content, an abundance of beautiful scenes and backstory, and even after M/M got set up in 1x09, most of S1 still delivered mostly beautiful Malex content.

S2 still had some good Malex scenes, overall, the season didn't exactly bolster our confidence tho. On the contrary, several times we got the reminder (in canon), that our ship was just too painful, too difficult to handle, that there were too many bad memories associated with it, and so on. The m/f relationship on the other hand was hailed as "easy" and exactly what Michael needed. And the season ended with Alex singing a love song about (and for) Michael, Michael walking out on him, and Alex kissing someone else.

The change of showrunners after S2 gave us a little boost in being hopeful, after all, Chris is the romantic one, the writer who'd provided us with some of our favorite Malex scenes, right?

So, when he asked us to trust him, many of us did. Some more willingly than others, but ultimately, I think many of us did trust him. Most of us probably still do, but man, we're now 7 episodes (that's more than half of the season) into S3, and all we got is 2 Malex scenes, cumulating to roughly 5 minutes of shared screentime.

Excuse us if that doesn't scream "trust us to do right by them" to us...

What we got in 3x07, was yet another reminder, that yes, the entire town of Roswell knows about Alex and Michael. Har, har, so funny...

I hope this is the last time this "joke" is used, the teasing isn't really fun anymore. There's only so much "so, you're in love with Michael" and "I've always known about you and Alex" we can take without them being in scenes together. All this "foreshadowing" and teasing has to lead to something solid going forward.

I believe the show will do that, but man, part of me desperately hopes I'm not wrong, and that all the trust I've put into Chris and the show for over a year, will pay off, starting next week.

Anyway, that's one more Malex-less episode out of the way, next episode's going to be a good one!

I can’t believe we trusted Chris to deliver us Malex. We‘ve seen 7 of 13 eps and got only two mini-malex-moments and one of them is Michael being mean to Alex.😠 Half of the season is over.

At this point I believe Chris and Heather have some personal relationship bc otherweise I can’t understand why Maria is leading S3? Wasn‘t Liz supposed to be the Lead-Character? Heather directing ep 7 where everybody praises Maria??? 🤮🤮🤮

I wasn‘t expecting him to undo S2 and what Maria did but giving us hope about malex and delivering nothing but making Maria the most important person on the show??? We have genius Michael, extra-ordinary brilliant Liz, mindcontrolling Isobel, Captain Alex and smart doctor Kyle who are not able to defeat Jones but Maria who didn’t have any powers for the last ten years and didn‘t know how to control her power in the last few eps?🤦🏽‍♀️🤔🤨

I think Chris, Vlamis and Jeanine are using Malex and giving us hope and some crumbles about malex (other acknowledging their love is NOT malex-content for me. Malex interacting together, talking together and working towards a relationship is good malex-content. Not Michael accusing Alex of not caring about anybody. 😖) bc otherweise so many fans of malex would stop watching RNM. Malex is their selling-point. After S1 and and during/after S2 so many fans left RNM.

I am leaving now and stopping watch RNM anymore, bc malex will not get together in S3 and how stupid and unlogical S3 is, there no point in watching it anymore.

I will scroll through Tumblr and see what happens.

Chris, like most showrunners, doesn't follow through with their promises (i.e. we're treating Echo and Malex the same this season). And sadly, it looks like he's carrying the homophobic torch on continuing to separate Malex from each other (while having them propping Maria Deluca up) into season 3. It's really too bad, I didn't expect a huge amount of change but damn, he's literally hung the Malex fans out to dry in a REAL in your face way.

I don't think Heather/Maria's special treatment this season is because she's Chris's favorite character or person or anything. It has to do with the network trying to save face this year as they became under fire last year for treating their POC/black character's poorly in storytelling (in all CW's shows, not just RNM). Maria being in every scene this season is the CW/RNM trying to say, "LOOK WE CARE ABOUT OUR POC CHARACTERS, IT'S MARIA EVERYWHERE, DON'T THINK TOO MUCH ON WHAT WE'RE HAVING HER SAY OR DO, JUST THAT SHE'S IN EVERY SCENE AND WE'RE SAYING HER NAME 1000 TIMES AN EPISODE!". It's definitely not helping RNM's case as Maria is still being written to be the absolute worst and still hasn't had any character development this season.

Liz has not been the lead of her own show since season 1. It's absolute bullsh*t they had Maria Deluca written to be front and center this season when it's LIZ ORTECHO'S SHOW and Maria Deluca is still being written to be the f*cking worst. Also yeah, didn't really think about it but really weird how in Heather's director debut the writer's had all the characters say 'Maria' like a billion times (seriously, if it was a drinking game we'd all be hospitalized or dead).

I actually was expecting Chris and the writer's to fix a LOT of season 2's mishandlings, especially in regards to the homophobic narration wrapped around Malex and Maria. It's literally the least they could do after grossly insulting the LGBTQ+ community last season and triggering a lot of people from that disgusting scene. They seem to have no problem writing everyone to be OOC in being up Maria's ass this season, yet just simply making a point in stating on screen by ANY character that how Alex Manes was treated by Maria (and even Michael at times) was wrong and especially 2x06's actions was unacceptable. There are no excuses, the writer's are just choosing to ignore all of it because it pertains to a gay character.

It can definitely be seen now 7 episodes into this season, that in the past interviews the cast, writer's and showrunner's have just been queerbaiting fans in trying to get them to continue watching this pretty terrible show. At this point, whatever Malex scenes we get at this point, I'm not expecting much. We only have 6 more episodes left and the romance hasn't even started between the two of them, they're barely interacting or talking about one another in other scenes. Don't even get me started on Sanders/Ramos being the ones to drop the Malex crumbs, it should be the main group. You know, the people who were completely ignoring Malex all last season? Still would love to know how the f*ck Ramos/Flint/Greg/Max/Sanders all found out about Malex since NONE OF THEM WILL TELL US. They just know. It's bullsh*t.

I totally understand nonnie, and I can't give you a reason to keep watching, this season has been a huge disappointment. I'm still going to try and stick it out till 3x13 but at this point I'm heavily disappointed after seeing how the homophobic narration is still going strong on this show.
