I'm going with 10 All Time Classics from the Captain America (MCU) fandom. I mean, they're all classics to me, at least. In no particular order:
1. This, You Protect by owlet
First installment in the Infinite Coffee and Protection Detail series, which are all amazing. It's a “Bucky escaping Hydra and rebuilding his sense of self” fic, which he does while spying on Steve. With eventual Avengers Family and a lovely cast of OCs bonding with Bucky in the meantime. It has a very distinctive perspective and writing style; Bucky's in constant internal (and sometimes accidentally external) dialogue with himself, making it hilarious and tragic all at the same time. I love it. I've recently been getting into The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells and this Bucky has a similar sassy-but-vulnerable vibe? Read this if you like that, anyway.
2. The One Who Knows by Dira Sudis (dsudis)
This is a Political Animals AU, in that no-powers Steve is inserted into the Political Animals world and Bucky is TJ. Discusses being outed and depression but is ultimately hopeful. The author is one of my all time faves and has written lots of great stories for this and many other fandoms.
3. Blue Scales by chaya
Steve is a merman AU. He's still Captain America, though. It's crack with heart, I love it.
Best line: "May your scales and your love story be our weird secret forever.”
4. Our Lingering Frost by eyres
AU where Bucky is rescued from Hydra in the 50s (?) and so is around for Steve to be found.
5. Assets Out of Containment by follow_the_sun
It's a classic to *me*, OK? Bucky goes undercover at Jurassic World just as that movie's plot kicks off. They're Hydra dinosaurs! It's just great. Also has a podfic and crossovers with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
6. Not Easily Conquered (series) by dropdeaddream and WhatAreFears
Some of the greatest fanfiction I've ever read, the whole series is epic. Anyway, it's a "Steve doesn't go into the ice" AU with added queer angst when (never sent) love letters from Bucky resurface. I particularly like the second installment in the series The Thirteen Letters, which are just Bucky's letters and are insanely well-written.
7. to memory now I can't recall by Etharei
Time travel AU! Featuring post-CATWS Bucky accidentally switching places with CATFA era Bucky.
8. If Wishing Made It So by Leveragehunters (Monkeygreen)
Genie!Bucky AU! This author is great at writing AUs with fantasy/genre elements, it was hard to choose. They've also written an excellent werewolf!Steve AU and a horse!Steve AU that I really love.
9. Into That Good Night by Nonymos
An Interstellar AU! Very angsty and tragic but with an eventual happy ending.
10. Goodbye Piccadilly, Farewell Leicester Square by Speranza
Speranza must be one of the best writers in the fandom, so it was hard to pick just one of their fics. Other strong contenders were All the Angels and the Saints and The Fifties, so check those out too! But this one has a special place in my heart. Steve, Tony and Natasha accidentally time travel to WW2 London, leading to an accidental run-in with CATFA-era Bucky. The author does tragic and romantic time travel tropes so well, but with a happy ending.
I now realise that most of these are AUs, so here’s a bonus rec for a non-AU in-universe story that’s severely underrated and deserves more love:
+1
Heart, Have No Pity on this House of Bone by Sena
This story follows Bucky in-action in the Pacific Theatre. It’s very well written and, from what I can tell, well researched. Steve only appears in Bucky’s imagination and the story focuses on the horrors of war rather than romance, but it’s gripping! And it explores unrequited love, being closeted and period-typical homophobia, which I also enjoyed. I’m still holding out hope for a sequel.

Good Omens Fics By Length
Tumblr media
How does your fic, or the fics you love, stack up against the statistics for the fandom as a whole?
The median represents the halfway point; 50% of all fics will be less than the median wordcount and the other half will be more. The upper quartile is thus the halfway between the median and the top wordcount, so 25% of fics are longer than the upper quartile mark.
Tumblr media
Thus, for example, if a fic published in October has 1,940 words, it is longer than exactly half of all fics published that month.
For the fandom as a whole, 2.5k words is right around the median:
Tumblr media
More than half of fics written in the Good Omens fandom are between 1k and 5k words, so if you tend to find yourself around that length you're in good company. If you've ever written something more than 50k, you're in the top 2% of all fandom works.
More info on how this data was gathered under the cut<3
Data was collected on February 1st and 10th, 2024, (edited to remove typo reading 2023) using Ao3's filtering system. Each month represents fics updated from the first through last days of the month. Please note that fics are filtered by when it was updated, not originally published, so longer running fics will be sorted under when they were finished or last added to. The cutoff to be included in wordcount data was 50 words, excluding hundreds of podfics and art pieces that didn't contribute to the overall picture of how fics were being written during this period.
Median and quartile data were extracted using the page list's midpoint and upper midpoint by doing math^TM.
All of this data is dedicated to my lovely darling writer friends and the fandom as a whole because fuck yeah. Love y'all<3

The goose is almost here!!! 🪿
Rummage around in those folders you haven’t opened in years, dust off the cobwebs, and bring some life back to your most abandoned works. You said you’d come back to it again one day, but the days turned to years, and – what’s that I hear?
H-O-N-K, we will finish a wip today!
H-O-N-K, write it or I won't go away!
What is the horrible goose fest?
The horrible goose fest is borne from the many cries for accountability from fandom creators and the wish that someone hound them (or honk at them) into finishing their wips. This is a partnered fest in which one partner (creator) commits to finishing a work-in-progress and one partner (goose) commits to providing dedicated accountability.
Great, how does it work?
There are no prompts in this fest. It's designed to help you finish those languishing drafts and build relationships with other folks in the fandom. You can sign up as a creator and/or a goose. If signing up as a creator, you are committing to finishing an existing work-in-progress (fic, art, podfic, translation) that is not affiliated with other current fest collections or prompts/self-prompts (wips from past fest drops are fine!) If your work-in-progress is already posted to ao3, we will ask you to hide it by adding it to a private collection for the duration of the fest; it will be revealed with everyone's works during the posting period. Creators will upload their finished works to the fest’s ao3 collection.
If you sign up as a goose, you are committing to frequent check-ins with your creator to help them finish their work in progress. This will involve ongoing discussions with your creator about their progress and deadlines. You're not expected to alpha or beta their work. Think of yourself as a particularly tenacious cheerleader. You are also committing to writing a thoughtful rec of the work upon its completion, which will be posted on tumblr.
How do I sign up?
All participants will sign up by filling out a form on airtable. You can choose your own partner to sign up with, or be paired with a partner by the mods. Participants must be 18+. Due to modly time constraints, we will be capping the number of fic sign-ups at 35. There will be no limit for art or podfic.
If signing up to be paired with a partner, sign up forms will be used to help the mods best match pairs. All HP fandom ships and characters are welcome. Creators will detail their wip plans and accountability needs. Gooses will detail their accountability style and preferred time/frequency commitment – how often and for how long can you check in, are you strict or more of a softie, what strategies and advice can you provide your creator? The form will also have a space for geese and creators to share ship preferences and squicks. We will try our best to match compatible creator/goose pairs, but as with any paired fest, you'll also need to be open, flexible, and friendly.
Can I sign up as both?
Sure! But be aware of the time commitment of both roles and be mindful of what you can realistically handle. Your partner is counting on you!
What if there are more geese than creators? Or more creators than geese?
If we have an imbalance, and you are a good fit for more than one creator/goose, you may be assigned more than one participant to work with. We will do our best to take into account your time commitment and preferences, so please let us know in the sign up if you are willing to be paired more than once! For fairness reasons, if you are a creator assigned two geese, the two geese will collaborate on a single rec of your work at the end of the fest. You are always welcome to assemble your own team of additional cheerleaders if you’d like <3
If I'm a goose, do I have to be horrible?
The title is jokey. We're not really encouraging anyone to be unkind. Think of a goose as an accountability partner. We're hearing from lots of creators that deadlines and kind but firm expectations are what really get them across the finish line. Goosing is a big job, but in the end we're all rewarded with more works to enjoy!
What if there’s an issue with my pairing?
To avoid this as much as possible, we encourage folks to sign up as an already-formed pair. Prior to matching, we will share a list of the participants who have signed up. Feel free to use this to form your own pairs. We will be running a discord to facilitate participants getting to know each other. Please remember to be kind, and if someone’s wip really catches your eye, don’t be afraid to reach out - they may be eyeing you!
That said, we know this might be stressful for some, so we are happy to pair you. If you have any concerns with regards to matching, or at any point throughout the fest, please reach out to us. Our goal is to make the fest a safe space for all participants in accordance with our expectations below.
Speaking of kindness, what are the other expectations in this fest?
We ask that participants generally abide by sals, kink-tomato, and dldr, but also, in recognition of the ways these rules have been used to silence poc voices in fandom, you may be asked to tag content beyond ao3's major trigger warnings or the fandom typical disclosure of sexual acts and violence, such as racist tropes/triggers. Refusal to tag sensitive content may result in your fic being pulled from the fest. If you have questions about what kinds of content we'll ask you to tag or want a sensitivity read for your content, please contact the mods, we really are happy to help!
There will be email check-ins throughout the fest. Make sure to add our email, [email protected], to your contacts to ensure you receive these communications. Please only reply via email, not via tumblr, discord or any other messaging service. Please send any questions about the fest to [email protected] or #mod-help channel in the fest discord (do not contact individual mods).
We will post small (optional) challenges and games to participate in during the fest to hype everyone up. These will be posted in the discord server and on tumblr, so make sure you join the server and follow @horriblegoosefest on tumblr!
Submission info:
There is no word count minimum but we do ask that you submit one fic, artwork, or podfic. Fics should be beta-read. Remember that geese are not required to beta (although they can if they'd like to). Podfics and translations must have either blanket permission or consent from the original authors to be included in the fest.
Works can be submitted in any language. There will be a space on the sign up form to let us know what language you intend to post. If our mod team is not fluent in your chosen posting language we will contact you to discuss options to help us make sure works are beta read and tagged according to fest guidelines. You may be asked to include a disclaimer that the mods are unable to guarantee comprehensive tagging.
Creators will submit works to an ao3 collection and the following header information should be emailed to the mods. Multi-chapter works will be revealed on a single posting day. As the fest deadline nears, geese will write a celebratory rec of their creator’s work, which will be posted to tumblr. We are happy to provide guidance on writing a rec if you need it.

It is bad translation etiquette to change the presentation of the fic? Like. Changing the Rating and the summary.
Not asking because I'm gonna do it, but because that just happened to a translation of my fic. It is not in English, so the translation is an English one. The person changed the E rating to M and got rid of my summary, they only kept a five-word sentence from it.
So. It's that common? Never happened to me .
--
Wow. That seems extremely rude to me.
You obviously speak English. Does the translation seem less explicit than your version? (That would still be bad, just in a different way, obviously.)
Personally, I'd have kept the rating and added a translator's note if I thought it was incorrect. The line between M and E isn't always super clear anyway.
The summary... no matter how bad I thought your summary was, a translation should reflect the original, especially an amateur translation like this where there isn't a marketing department pushing for changes to sell better in the new market.
This is extremely weird and taking more liberties than I think is typical in this situation. The only time I'd expect to see another style of translation/adaptation in fandom would be if the original work is super weird somehow and the author even suggests it.
For example, I wrote a parody once for a fake fandom where there's a fake flamewar in the comments that's part of the piece. When someone wanted to podfic it, I suggested the do whatever wacky shit they felt like. I recall they had this whole "I need to read out some of the comments so you know whom in the fandom to avoid" segment delivered with a straight face. If you're "translating" something like that, I could imagine straight up changing parts of the "fic" to be better parodies in the local fannish culture.
But a regular fic that isn't strange meta humor? Fans expect a pretty 1:1 translation.
To me, that includes the headers, not just the body of the fic.

Fan Artist Emoji Asks
Big thanks to @nottheweirdest, who created the Fanfic Writer Emoji Ask and gave me permission to use that as a template for a visual artist version! This ask game is for visual artists, and while the questions most often ask about drawing or sketching, just substitute your preferred medium.
😅 What's a sketch or finished image you've created that you're a smidge embarrassed exists?
🥺 Is there a certain type of moment or common interaction between characters that never fails to put you in your feels when you draw it?
🤡 What sketch or detail in an image have you drawn that made you laugh?
😈 Have you ever created an image or added some detail just to be playfully mean to the viewer?
👀 Do you have someone who you can go to when you need another set of eyes on an image?
🛒 What are some common things you incorporate in your images? Themes, feels, scenes, color palettes, etc.
🎢 Which of your images would you call your wildest ride?
✨ Give you and your art a compliment. Go on now. You know you deserve it. 😉
💋 Drawing characters smooching—do you enjoy it or hate it?
🎶 Do you listen to music/podcasts/audiobooks/podfics while you draw? What have you been listening to lately?
🛠 What traditional media or digital programs do you use to draw?
⛔ Do you have an image you started but scrapped?
🙋‍♀️ Do any irl people know you make fan art?
🍦 What's the sweetest image you've created so far?
🍷 Do you drink and draw?
🍆 Do you draw spicy stuff? If so, what's your favorite nsfw image?
🌞 Do you have a preferred time of day to draw?
💖 What made you start drawing?
💌 How do you feel about comments and feedback?
❌ What's something you would never draw?
💲 Would you ever open commissions?
🧐 Do you spend much time researching and finding references for your images?
🏆 What's your most popular image?
🎃 Do you create images for certain holidays? What is your favorite holiday-inspired image?
🎯 Has anyone ever guessed a handy trick or shortcut you used in an image? Care to share which?
📖 How do you feel about fics based on you art?
📈 How many fan art images have you created?
🤔 Do you plan out things like values, colors, and composition or fly by the seat of your pants?
🎨 Tell me about an upcoming wip, please!
🤗 What advice would you give to new fan artists who are just getting started?
🤩 Who is your favorite character to draw?
💞 Who is your comfort character? Not necessarily your favorite to draw, but one that always makes you feel a little better.
🧠 When drawing [character name], what about them is hardest to draw? (askers, don't forget to specify the character!)
🤲 Would you please share a wip? Maybe a sketch or a small preview of an image?
😬 Which of your images would you be most horrified for friends, family, or coworkers to stumble upon?
🎉 What leads you to consider an image a success?
✅ What's something that appears in your images over and over and over again, even if you don't mean to?
🖼️ Would you ever want to turn making art into a career?
⌛ How long does it take you to complete a sketch versus a finished image?
🤯 What's an aspect of images with which you struggle (ex. human figures, backgrounds, hands, animals, cars, etc.)?
💔 Is there an image of yours that broke your heart?
💥 How do you feel about criticism?

Dreamling for Ukraine fundraiser
Dear fellow Dreamers, as the war in Ukraine rages on, events have reached another horrifying zenith with the destruction of Kakhovka Dam, causing a chain reaction of disaster.
Today we are coming together as a fandom in a collective effort to raise donations for the victims in need.
How it works:
In order to raise funds, creators of the fandom will offer their services under #DreamlingforUkraine in exchange for donations.
Every participating creator will create a list of what they offer, their prices, number of slots and expected turnaround times. You will then be able to approach your chosen creator and commission a piece of fanwork by donating to a charity that provides aid to the victims.
See our list of recommended charities HERE.
How to participate as a creator:
Sign-ups are open until July 17th 2023! To enter the charity drive and offer your services you will be required to make your own event post and submit it to the tag #DreamlingforUkraine.
You may use our template to set up your post. Set your prices at your own discretion, any agreement will be between you and the donor.
Tag our event blog @dreamlingforukraine to make sure we can add you to the creators masterlist.
There is no deadline for accepting donations or posting your works. We recommend keeping your slots open until at least July 7th 2023 or until you’ve reached your cap. Please remember that you will be expected to finish everything you have agreed to make, so be sure not to take on more slots than you can fill! You may set a minimum donation amount or word limit and include things you are and aren't willing to write/draw/make.
You are invited to share how much money you have raised with the team of @dreamlingforukraine by sending us an ask so that we can keep track of how much we’ve raised. This is not mandatory and all numbers will be added together and published strictly anonymously.
Dreamling for Ukraine is open to all kinds of media, even if you don’t write or draw you may offer things like moodboards, gifsets, fanvids, podfic or playlist. We also accept diy submissions such as cosplay, crocheting/knitting, cooking/baking and anything else. We also have a collection on ao3 for the event.
IMPORTANT! When you submit your works to the Dreamling for Ukraine collection on AO3 DO NOT mention that you made it in return for monetary compensation (this includes donations even if they are for charity) you can thank your donor for their support or use other vague wording that does not mention money if you want to.
How to participate as a donor:
Keep an eye on the tag #DreamlingforUkraine or refer to our growing masterlist of participants.
Choose a charity of your liking and then approach the creator of your choice.
It will be between you and the creator to agree on a type of commission and a price.
Please do not donate before you have negotiated all terms with your creator and have their go. Your donations will be non-refundable.
PLEASE NOTE: The event team and event blog are here to boost attention for the charity drive and its participants. We do not take any responsibility for the fulfillment of your commissions or on behalf of the charities you donate to. If there are any problems please contact the creator or charity directly.

Now that the days (in the Northern Hemisphere at least) are getting shorter and darker, why not enhance your fanfic reading experience with a fun challenge?
Generate your own Fanfic Reading Bingo Card and try to finish it over a timespan of your choice (e.g. during your next family gathering).
Tumblr media
Details & instructions under the cut
Generate a new bingo card until you're (mostly) happy with the results. You can re-roll every single bingo field separately by clicking/tapping on it. When you have a card that fits your reading habits (or takes you out of your comfort zone, if you want to challenge yourself), take a screenshot of the card to keep it. Closing the page and reloading it will reset the card.
There are no fanfic-negative or bashing items in the lists. This bingo card is meant to be a positive experience and celebrate fanfiction and fanworks in general.
It's just a little practice piece I made for funsies mostly over the weekend, with some finishing touches earlier today. I will add more content over the next few days and weeks (and let's be realistic, probably months), but everything that's currently in there should already work as intended.
The bingo generator is responsive, which means it should work on desktop and mobile. The mobile layout isn't ideal yet, I'm trying my best to make it better (but I'd also still consider myself a newbie and I'm learning by doing).
Tumblr media
The platform I'm using, Perchance, recently added AI options for their generators. This is a regrettable decision that I don't condone, and I'd like to emphasise that this generator is 100% handcrafted chaos.
Leaving the NSFW checkbox unchecked should remove all NSFW tags and tropes, but you could still come across content you find objectionable. Leaving the AO3 Tags checkbox unchecked removes all tags, but you could still come across tropes you find objectionable.
If you run into any issues or come across any bugs, please let me know. If you find something that should be in the NSFW category, but isn't, please also let me know. It's possible that I missed a few tags when I worked through the list. (But don't ask me to remove content you find objectionable.)
What do the checkboxes mean?
NSFW is basically what it says on the tin. If you tick this box, the NSFW tropes will be added to the mix. If you also ticked the AO3 Tags box, NSFW AO3 tags will be added.
AO3 Tags is also what it says on the tin. It's a list with roughly 1,000 AO3 tags. Around 250 of them are currently marked NSFW and can only be generated if you ticked both the NSFW box and the AO3 Tags box.
Stats & Meta currently only includes the lists "length" (contains wordcounts ranging from drabble to >500k) and "meta", which currently contains items like "a work with a song lyrics title" or "a work in a series". I will probably add other lists to that category at some point.
The already populated lists are:
challenge (various challenges and events like Yuletide, Whumptober)
creator (items like favourite author, anon creator)
discovery (various ways you could've found a fic)
fandom (ranging from tiny fandom to megafandom, also options like old fandom, inactive fandom, etc)
length (wordcounts from drabble to over 500k)
medium (items like podfic, fandom meta, fic with fanart)
meta (a fic's front-end and stats, also "citrus scale for rating" xD)
platform (where you read the fic)
reader (your relationship with the fic; is it your comfort fic, or your first fic in a fandom?)
style (chatfic, iambic pentameter, custom workskin, stuff like that)
trope (roughly 100 tropes)
tag (roughly 1,000 AO3 tags)
Lists that are currently planned, but empty:
canon (probably stuff like anime fandom, video game fandom, etc)
category (planned to add the AO3 categories and maybe Archive Warnings to this list)
content (might be scrapped, might be populated with some items moved over from other lists)
genre (what it says on the tin)
setting (where or when does the fic take place)
It's possible that I come up with more ideas for more lists at one point.
I had lots of fun making it, and I hope that you'll have fun with it. If you're using it, let me know when you got a bingo! :D
If you have fannish accounts on there (or don't mind inflicting fandom on your regular followers), you can also share the Fanfic Reading Bingo on Twitter, Mastodon, and Bluesky! :D

Signups Open
The nominations are now all processed (final count: 675 fandoms and 4368 ships in the tagset) and signups are now open. They will remain so until 11:00am UTC on 11 November. Please click here to see when the deadline is for your timezone.
The sign-up form is here. If you have any difficulties, let us know by commenting on this post or sending an e-mail to [email protected].
As a reminder:
- You can request/offer 3-10 fandoms - You can request/offer 1-20 relationships per fandom - If you would like to request/offer any nominated relationship, tick the "Any" box - Make certain to choose which medium or mediums you are willing to create for each fandom
Please make sure to familiarise yourself with the updated rules and the minimums for each type of fanwork over here since we have several new fanwork types this year.
Please remember that Any really does mean any. Do not request or offer Any unless you mean it. Any does not mean "any relationships except for these certain ones" or "any relationships involving this character" or "this relationship that I really like but forgot to nominate." It means any relationship whatsoever that was nominated under that fandom and is currently listed in the tag set.
It is fine to include prompts asking that a fourth/fifth/sixth/etc. character be added to the relationship you've requested. (For example, if you requested Harry/Hermione/Ron, you can include a prompt along the lines of: "... and if you want to have Neville join in, that's fine with me!") As with everything included in the Optional Details box or Dear Creator letter, though, please note that any such request is optional. Your creator is only required to create a fanwork for the specific relationship that you matched on.
Under the Requests section of the sign-up, there is a field to put a link to a Dear Creator letter if you have written one. There is also a box for Optional Details where you can put Do Not Wants, prompts, and various other details. While the optional details section of signups is optional, it is strongly suggested that participants include DNWs. Any DNWs or triggers included in the signup itself will be enforced by the mods as long as they are reasonable (ie, something that the mods can easily look for and that isn't extremely subjective).
Any DNWs listed in letters but not the signup itself, as well as any general likes/dislikes/prompts/etc. listed in the signup or in letters, are optional for the creator.
Anyone requesting vids or other visual media is encouraged to list any accessibility requirements they have in their sign-up alongside other DNWs, such as no flashing lights, no fast-moving cuts, no high contrast, no songs by [insert artist here], etc. Please try to at least provide details about general music that you like/dislike as well if you request either vids or fanmixes. Providing aesthetic preferences for visual fanworks (including face claims if applicable for the fandom) is encouraged too, to give the person creating for you an idea of what you like.
For anyone requesting podfics, please indicate whether or not you'd like your own fanworks podficced and gifted to you. If possible, try to provide more information about your likes/dislikes as well so that the person creating a podfic for you can try to make sure the fic they're recording is one that you will enjoy.
When you submit your sign-up, there is also an Optional Details box located under the Offers section. If there is any specific topic, or rating, that is a strong DNW or trigger for you and you don't want to receive an assignment that mentions said topic even as an optional prompt, please provide details in that box. We will do our best to accommodate such requests when doing matching but cannot make any promises. You are also welcome to send an e-mail to the above address, if you prefer.
Participants will be matched on fandom, relationship, and medium (fanart, fanfic, fanvid, podfic). Please note that you only need to create a fanwork for one of the relationships requested; if you match on more than one, it is your decision which one (or ones) to choose.

Pre-season 2 OFMD fic list
It's less than two weeks till we get our ships wrecked, so here's my (presumably) final pre-season 2 fic list. Have a read if you wanna pass the improbably long days before the season premieres!
This list got out of control so I added some handy symbols: 🎧 = podfic available 💜 = personal favourite ⭐ = fics you may have heard about? I don’t know, I don’t have a sense for this stuff.
Cool collaboration(s) you should read immediately:
🎧💜Work Experience: what if Ed went to meet Stede when the Revenge ran aground? And what if Ed became a member of Stede’s crew? And what if things kept escalating and… Canon AU. Mature. Co-written with Shearwater.
Really no excuse for how stupid these ones are:
Watch Out, Here I Come: what if Stede had been intentionally seducing Ed? Teen
Once More, With Feeling: what if Frenchie just fixed the season 1 finale fiasco because he’s the most capable guy on the ship? Teen
Talent Show: what if Ed was crass about his sexual preferences? Explicit
Capsize on Your Thighs: what if Ed rebounded onto Calico Jack at the end of season 1? Ed/CJ and Ed/Stede (but Ed/Stede is endgame, natch). Explicit
🎧💜Your Feedback is Important to Us: what if Stede started holding open cabin hours to allow the crew to air their grievances (but was also very repressed and horny over Ed)? Explicit
Oh no Ed’s working through gender/class stuff (but make it funny):
Finery: Ed gets to wear a dress, Stede spontaneously combusts. Explicit
Tell More Tales: Stede isn’t the only writer aboard the Revenge. Explicit

2023 in summary - slightly less productive than 2022, with way more speed bumps than usual (lying catatonic in bed for a month was not on the agenda, surprisingly). Here's to a better 2024!
Fandoms: I added to the chaos this year by jumping into Top Gun Maverick, but Ao3 tells me my beloved in 2023 was 911 Lone Star. I also wrote more RWRB fics, so that rounded out the holy trinity.
Total words (on Ao3) in 2023: 404,508 of posted fic (with a few thousand yet to go). 2023 pushed my total word count over 1 million 💜
Total words (unposted, in my Google Docs but written in 2023):
40k approx of Pet Store AU (co-write with @strandnreyes)
14k approx of Call Me (co-write with @rmd-writes)
44k approx of Eurotrip (although I think I only wrote about 15k of that in 2023).
3k of The Ring-In 2.0.
1k of Christmas fic.
31k of 10 Things I Hate About You AU.
11k of Product Placement.
so...like a LOT of unposted WIP.
Most recent fic: a long time ago (we used to be friends)
Longest fic: the fic above at 166k approx (my longest ever! for now...)
Top fic by kudos: Fifty First Dates (the oodie agenda reigns supreme)
Top fic by comments: Cursed is a State of Mind (cursed coffee is a hot topic)
Projects for 2024: Finishing something of the above? If my most recent RWRB fic does okay, maybe I'll dedicate my whole summer to Eurotrip? Idk. I keep running out of steam worrying it's going to be a flop lol.
What I want to read: SO MUCH. guys. I'm so behind. I'm so, so sorry. I need to finish Knave 3 by @liminalmemories21, the Gabriel fic by @wandering-night19, the prompt fills by @strandnreyes, first aid by @heartstringsduet, the angsty fic by @carlos-in-glasses, bottom carlos that came out the other day by @goodways, the food fic by @reyesstrand, fear kidnapped tk fic by @birdclowns, the boxing au (is it out yet?? i'm seriously so pathetic) by @cold-blooded-jelly-doughnut and legit so many other things that are just not at the top of my mind yet. OH and i am frothing at the mouth to read accidental couples therapy firstprince by @cha-melodius and i heard that @cricketnationrise and maybe someone else wrote a fic about oodies?? @celeritas2997 send me the links!!!!!!! and the percy jackson au by @inexplicablymine @read-and-write- and @happiness-of-the-pursuit. also i never sat down and finished to build a home part 3 @freneticfloetry i owe you that please don't think i've forgotten!!! okay guys do you see how frantic my brain is now? please don't judge me i'm sure there's WAY MORE i'm just forgetting. everyone send me their reading lists!!!!!! i finally have time!!!!! also i'm gonna put @celeritas2997 sweet sweet voice in my ear and listen to her podfic to calm me down. OH AND ALL THE SNOWFLAKS (@everwitch-magiks @clottedcreamfudge @athousandrooms @dustratcentral @three-drink-amy @indomitable-love @villiageidiot @rmd-writes).
Lolaland over and out! (Maybe, maybe there is time in the year for a couple more thousand words...)

As someone who's not too knowledgeable about this stuff, can you explain to me why it's bad to advertise your ko-fi and similar things
--
I did explain, at length.
But if you want it again, it's bad to advertise your ko-fi on AO3 because AO3 is made by your fellow fans, not corporate overlords. Disobeying the tiny number of rules on AO3 is therefore extremely rude.
They didn't come from nowhere. I wrote them. (With a committee.)
If you disobey them, you are being rude to me.
If you put your ko-fi links on AO3, you are a bad community member who does not deserve to be on AO3 at all.
--
As for why the rule is there, it's two things:
Legality Selling works based on other people's stuff (yes, including art) is harder to defend under fair use than noncommercial works are. OTW has chosen to go to bat for noncommercial works. A tip jar still counts even if it's not for just one work. You can take your chances with Disney's lawyers if you want, but you cannot do it on AO3.
Site Culture
Spaces that are not full of hustle culture are more pleasant. OTW was set up to defend a specific kind of DIY culture that is not monetized. This is the historical fandom culture that the lawyers and the coders and the donors and all the others who built AO3 came from, and we built it for that.
If you want a site not for that, you will need to build it yourself.
Adding money crap to this space is like going to your friend's dinner party and then trying to sell your multilevel marketing leggings: it ruins the social space.
People act like this is the more minor of the two reasons, but it's really the bigger one.
We're in the middle of a cultural disaster where people, especially women, are being induced to cannibalize their support networks in the service of MLMs and other hustle garbage. In the end, they mostly make very little actual money, and they've burned all their bridges in the process, removing that support network they're going to need in the future. It's a problem that extends far outside of fandom, but at least here, we can put our foot down.
(The need this bad behavior is supposed to be serving is a need that would be better addressed by universal basic income, a thing we should all be working to make a political reality everywhere.)
OTW and AO3 exist to make a space that is a respite from monetized hobbies. The culture they're defending is a gift economy. It is not compatible with tip jars for actual money, only with people offering free betaing or podficcing another's work for the joy of it.
This is why AO3 does not allow any commercial activity, whether it's monetizing Disney-owned shit that will get you in legal trouble or selling original novels and fic of public domain works.

Hi! I'm thinking about making a podfic of one of my favorite fics and I wanted to ask for a couple of tips because I adore your podfics and I have run into a couple problems very early on.
how do you do deeper voices? my voice is fairly high (I'm a soprano that can occasionally deep down into lower alto) and most of the voices in the fic are male. I also always sound about twelve in recordings lol
how do you make distinct voices? again, I have a lot of different voices (probably 5-7 that talk the most, with many many other reoccurring characters).
pacing of reading. I tend to speak/read very quick and in my practice recordings, it sounds like I'm talking much faster than I felt I was. any tips on that?
what recording programs are best? currently I'm using voice memos on my phone. which. is clearly not going to give me the best sound, regardless of the app I use, but I don't have many options.
I am living in a dorm right now and live in fear of my suite mates hearing me (my roommate not quite as much as she likes to dub and does a lot in our room--though she does it in mandarin so I cant understand it). not to mention background noise of doors opening and whatnot. if you have any tips on that as well, that would be great!
I love your podfic, you put so much soul into them, and I hope that I could do that too!
Hello fellow podfic-er! I’m so excited for you to make a podfic!
The nice thing about podfics is that I usually don’t have to create characters from scratch, they already exist in the TV show. If I’m struggling with a character, I just rewatch some clips of them talking and imitate it!
Deep voices: I, too, have a high, childish voice and struggle with deep, Manly Men. I guess the main tip I have is to...give up. What I mean is focus less on pitch and more on tone. If you speak too low, it’ll be less expressive and will probably hurt your throat. It can work for minor, 2D characters, but don’t do it for main characters that have a wide range of emotions (you may notice that my Mighty Oaks Fire Sage Zuko voice swings higher when he’s emotional oops). Instead, use your normal pitch, and make a character sound adult by using an authoritative tone. Another thing I do is play up the childish and feminine voices. We might not be able to make the adults sound adult, but we can make the kids sound extra kiddish by comparison.
Distinct voices: I’m a tactile learner, so for me, it’s all about the physicality. Every time I do Azula’s voice, I make a pinched face like I’m eating a lemon. When I record Ozai, I sneer. For Sokka, I jut out my chin and flail my arms. It looks silly, but no one is around to see. There’s lots of YouTube tutorials about how to make different voices by varying speed and tone and nasal quality, but I get kinda lost in the sauce with those theory lessons. The only way I can really get myself to do different voices is if I’m working off of a reference. I just watch videos of other cartoons and live actors and then copy them.
Pacing: Pacing is hard. I especially struggle with the editing and often end up cutting things wonkily. Audiobooks tend to be slow because you’re less likely to get tongue tied that way. If I have a big hunk of text that I find myself racing through, I slow myself down with physicality again. I’ll lean in on important words or mime out the actions. For example, on the line, “Zuko turns, grabs the bar at the side of the ship, and throws himself back over,” I'll turn my body on the word “turn,” grab an imaginary bar on the word “grab” and then lurch forward on the word “throw.” Adding in movement can bring variation to those big blocks of text.
What recording programs are best: I don’t know! I use Audacity because it’s free. Adobe Audition is great too, but it’s expensive. I am very lazy with the podfics. I don’t have a professional set-up. Basically, I make a comfortable nest of pillows in bed or my closet, use an iPhone VoiceMemos app to record straight into the phone mic, send the audio file to my computer, convert the audio to a WAV file, put it in Audacity, add a Noise Reduction effect, and then cut it down. Once I’m done editing it, I export the Audacity file as an mp3, upload it to archive.org and Spotify, and then embed those links into Ao3. Feel free to DM me if you have other tech questions. I am not particularly savvy, but we can Google it together? If any voice actors on Tumblr have professional advice, please chime in.
Silence and privacy: Background noise is a big headache for me too. I live in a noisy area with lots of planes and a squeaky elevator. I usually record now in my closet surrounded by pillows and blankets, so it’s fairly soundproof. If there’s a noise, I usually wait for the sound to stop, record the line again, then edit out the mistake in post. At the end of the day, though, sounds will slip in. It’s just a podfic; we’re doing this for fun not professionally, so it doesn’t need to be polished. I think most listeners’ attitudes is that something is better than nothing. If you’re in a school dorm, there might be music practice rooms, a radio recording booth, or empty classrooms you can use instead.
Storage: Something I didn’t realize going in was how much storage the audio clips take up. Make sure you save and delete projects as you go. One time I finished editing an Audacity project, but it wouldn’t let me save it because I ran out of storage and I had to start over.
I’m so glad you like the podfics I’ve done and that it could help inspire you to make one too! I started making podfics because I fell in love with @pixieinthesky’s fantastic Salvage podfic (it's an absolute gem). Keep the chain going!
Have fun!

Wireless 2023 recs: week 1
Tumblr media
My desire to read Drarry fic is returning so I'm making my way through this year's @hd-wireless offerings week by week. Here is a list of things I enjoyed from the week 1 round up. My favourites are marked with a ❤️. If you find yourself wondering why my list is 3/4 of the week 1 round up, yes I know, this bloody fandom honestly, so much good stuff.
[29.08. creators added after reveals]
❤️ Why don’t you like me? by @caroll-in (T, digital comic)
Failing to ask Harry out, Draco deals with his feelings in a very dramatic fashion.
Alive by @itsphantasmagoria (E, Digital comic)
Harry is lost after the final battle, but he finds comfort from an unexpected source
❤️ Before the Cold Sets In by @vukovich & @crazybutgood (T, 9k, fic + origami art)
But if I measure the sugar To satisfy your expectant tongue Then that is love Sitting untouched and growing cold - Cold Tea Blues, by Cowboy Junkies Sometimes, the person you should be planning your life with is already in it. Or, how Harry realised that true love is at the bottom of a tea cup.
Everybody Hates a Tourist by @wolfpants (E, 51k)
On a stag do in sunny Brighton with the Gryffindor lads, the last person Harry expects to run into is Draco Malfoy. After a glimpse of Malfoy’s Muggle life in Britain’s gay capital, Harry’s curiosity gets the better of him and he finds himself returning to the seaside again and again, drawn to the city, drawn to this new version of Malfoy that Harry barely recognises from school. Meanwhile, Draco’s just trying to live his big and best queer life: working for the weekend, chasing hot men, getting lost in Brighton’s nightlife, and making friends with the neighbourhood cats. Why does his former school rival and crush have to show up and spoil everything?
Don’t hate him when he gets up to leave by @deliciousblizzardshark (M, 2k)
The linens are white and empty, sunlight slanting through the window illuminating a bed that has been deserted. Draco knew Potter would leave; he’s always gone by morning. Draco doesn’t even remember what he looks like in daylight.
Take You Home by @lqtraintracks (E, 26k)
Everybody’s a little fucked up after the war, Draco especially. What starts as hate sex after a night out, eventually turns into something else, something more like comfort. And even though his friends all tell Harry he’s just being used, all Harry’s doing is making sure Draco gets home in one piece. He’s not falling helplessly in love.
If You Took the Time to Try by enoby_w (T, 18k)
Last summer, Draco’s impulsive decision to sleep with Harry Potter resulted in a bruised ego and a broken heart. Now he’s looking for a fresh start- something that was absolutely not just an excuse for him to run away from his problems. Only it totally was, and while leaving London might have been easy, leaving Potter in the past was not.
Title & Possession by @kbrick (E, 49,063)
Harry Potter’s life is going well in the aftermath of the war. Sure, his house is dark and run-down and might hate him (while his house elf definitely hates him). But other than that, things are good. Except, yeah, okay, Hermione and Ron are no longer on speaking terms. Worse, they keep trying to get Harry to pick sides. But otherwise, Harry couldn’t be happier. Well. Except for the fact that Ginny is being super weird about their relationship and never wants to have sex or talk about the future. But other than that, Harry is perfectly fine, thankyouverymuch. At least, he is until Draco Malfoy threatens to sue him for ownership of Number Twelve, Grimmauld Place, and winds up moving in until the issue is settled. Then Harry really isn’t fine at all.
❤️ Moldova’s Magical Tea by aibidil - a Podfic by cailynwrites (E, 2h 46min)
Neville Longbottom, Luna Lovegood, and—to everyone’s surprise—Draco Malfoy are opening a magical tea shop to revive wizarding tea culture and, hopefully, to bring the community together after the war. Harry, who is unemployed and trying to find his way in post-war society, wants to help his friends with their new business—but that means spending a lot of time around Malfoy. Featuring Muggle music from summer 2001, trips to the Muggle cinema, herbology and magical herbal infusions, and Draco trying to convince Harry that, while he’s still a snarky git, he’s no longer a bigot.

Recording a TTS version of a fic is not podficcing.
Posting a TTS version of a fic does not make you a podficcer.
It’s not even close. The mere idea is disingenuous at best and insulting at worst. No shade if you prefer an AI voice or if you use TTS for any reason, but it’s absolutely infuriating that there are people who think pressing a button and letting an AI record a fic for you is in any way comparable to the work that goes into an actual podfic.
Podficcing is already the most thankless medium in fandom. You’re lucky to get a couple dozen kudos and a handful of comments on Ao3. Some podficcers in some fandoms get nothing.
Podficcers give you pieces of themselves. They give you their voice. They give you their interpretations and spins on characters and stories. They inject emotion and help breathe life into what they record.
It can take HOURS to get a good single hour of recorded audio. It can take a good 4-8 hours to EDIT an hour of recorded audio depending on your speed and how much work it needs.
And that’s at a very basic level. It doesn’t include effects. It doesn’t include if you have to re-record various portions and correct what you’ve already recorded. It doesn’t include the cover art if you make it. It doesn’t include adding music and stitching everything together.
I’ve spent upwards of 150 hours on a podfic before, and the idea that someone could record the same fic in twelve with the push of a button and no real effort on their part, upload it, call themselves a podficcer, and expect the same level of appreciation fills me with a rage so deep and visceral that it makes me ill. Especially considering how little appreciation we already GET.
It devalues what we do. People already have no idea the effort that goes into podficcing. The idea that it’s as simple as pressing record on your computer while a TTS function reads a fic is absolutely maddening, and by acting as though it’s the same thing, you’re saying that it is that simple.
If authors are happy with TTS recordings of their work being posted, I get that. It can be great for a variety of reasons - especially if there’s no available podfic.
But there shouldn’t even be a precedent for referring to those as podfics because that’s not what they are. Imagine being an author and being offered a podfic, and someone just posts a TTS recording of your fic.
That’s not what you were expecting. Anyone can plug a fic into a TTS reader.
And seeing people do that and act as though they’ve created something that compares to what an actual podficcer creates - in terms of time, effort, creativity, and fucking soul - makes me want to smash something.
