Speaking of normal lesbians, I’m so fucking tired of trying to date as a lesbian in the current climate. Like legitimately every dating app is like 60% ugly transwomen whose bio says some violent shit about terfs and how much they love bdsm, and 30% are blue haired genderkweers with stupid pronouns who are “ethically non-monogamous”. All the actual female lesbians are non-binary now and have shit about “No terfs!” in their bios as well. The remaining 10% are couples looking to “have some fun” where they pull you in with a couple attractive photos of the woman and then the neckbeard boyfriend hits you like a brick on the third picture.

Like, I feel like my only option is to somehow try and meet radfem terfy women irl, and tbh… I don’t want that either? Like I appreciate the movement and the interesting discourse online but I don’t want a partnership that starts based on politics? And I really enjoy the company of my male friends, like I don’t want a girlfriend who hates men and is a female separatist (while I understand those points of view). But it feels like there’s no in-between. I literally just want a normie girlfriend who isn’t going to gaslight me into pretending men are lesbians and that she’s some sort of special third gender, and I don’t want the other extreme either of wanting nothing to do with men and being very invested in trans discourse. I just wish the whole trans thing would fuck off out of my life tbh, but I can’t seem to avoid it when trying to date.

I’m in a similar boat though regarding feeling like it’s going to be impossible to find a woman who’s actually compatible with me. The only difference is that I’d be happy to have a female separatist partner. But a normie girlfriend would be great, although honestly I think we’re rapidly approaching a place where no woman in the younger generations (teens-30’s) is going to be able to be normie when it comes to trans issues. Because most younger people are aware of these issues, and with women we have the choice of forcing ourselves to accept a movement that hates us, or being against it and knowing we have to be aware of what’s going on with it. This goes double for lesbians considering how much is at stake for us.

I agree with you on not wanting a partnership that starts based on politics, though. I guess it could work, like say you meet at a speaking event or something, because that’s really no different than meeting at a coffee shop or concert or something… but “I’m terfy and you’re terfy, let’s date” feels kinda weird. Hopefully the tide changes soon and we can count on the majority of women knowing all the trans stuff is bullshit, and it won’t even have to be mentioned.

Realising I am a lesbian (this is gonna be long)

This is not something I talk about much because I see it as something personal and not for public discussion. Equally I feel that online discussions, especially on tumblr are steeped in this idea of "winning" an argument, "proving" you're allowed to say this or that and "owning" your "opponents" and I dont like my personal story to have any part of that.

But the recent discussion I was just having made me reminisce a lil bit so I'm gonna talk about it now. Because I feel like where I'm coming from on this is pretty relevant.

Something you need to understand is that I was not popular in primary school. I had like barely any friends. I basically got it into my head that I was more mature than everyone else, and I was like, so excited to go to secondary school. I watched all the rom coms about high school and I just saw it as my chance to be the super popular girl, that dates all the boys, and everyone loves etc. This fantasy of myself as the next regina George was something that really kept me going during that time. And I went to secondary school and tbh I got my wish- ofc real life isnt as dramatic as the movies, there was no dramatic walking down the halls with everyone in awe- but for all intents and purposes i was relatively popular, had my little girl gang, and most importantly, loads of boys fancied me. I got my first kiss age 11 and just felt I was succeeding in life. I subsequently got slapped in the face with the realisation that I was a lesbian.

Now this was like, unacceptable to me. I basically promised myself that it didn't matter, I was gonna stay closeted forever, I could still date boys, no one needed to know. This idea i had that my attractiveness to boys was my sole life force was not going away any time soon. So i did that. I dated boys, and I was enjoying it too. I knew I wasnt really into them (do not @ me about the ethics of that this is middle school it was never gonna last regardless) but really the whole point of dating them was to satiate my need to be the super attractive girl, not actual feelings. That was true before I realised I was gay and it was still true afterwards so yeah I was still getting that same buzz, the delight of realising someone's into me, scrutinizing him with my friends, gossiping about it- I was loving it. So far none of this is sounding very gay I know. The thing was these relationships would never last longer than maybe like 2 months. That's not that strange for that age group, hence why no one picked up on it, but after the initial hype wore down, after it became something in my life not a new adventure I was just bored and I started to hate it. I remember this would change really rapidly, almost overnight I would go from being so excited about him to just wanting him nowhere near me. I like kinda knew this was because of my sexuality but like I said, as far as i was concerned I could basically just be straight and only think about women in private so I didn't scrutinise it too much.

Anyway fast forward a few years of this. When I was 18 I moved somewhere new, much more accepting place with -SHOCK- other, out, gay people. This was like crazy to me and I came out to a handful of my friends. It was bliss honestly. However to my, and my friends, surprise I did not stop getting with guys after I'd come out to people. It was really weird for me, I just like could not stop seeing guys like a dating prospect. I was not actively dating guys but like sometimes kissing them at parties stuff like that. I remember thinking that I needed to stop getting with them if I wanted people to believe me that I was gay, but then thinking, if i need to try then surely I'm not gay, like what is this? So when I went to uni I came out as bisexual. I really wanted to come out at uni because i was ok with people knowing now, but I was scared of like making announcements to people so going away was like, my opportunity to just let people know when I first met them and it would be a casual thing. And I just decided I was gonna say I was bisexual because saying I was confused felt too personal to share with people I was just meeting but also if I was still getting with guys, any discussion of how I could be a lesbian also felt too personal so i was like ok I'm bisexual now. I dont mean this like I actively lied, I mean more like, I just told myself I must be, because i seemingly could not stop getting with guys.

So yeah for a couple of years I identified as bisexual. I basically changed my mind because of one event. What happened was, there was this guy on my course who like, I had noticed before, but not in an attraction way (not even fake attraction, like I had not even thought about him as hot, or someone i would wanna get with i just knew like who he was). And whilst out with some friends of mine, they were getting all giggly and gossipy about how cute this guy is. I just saw them like laughing about something and then one of them turned to me and said "Dont you think x is really fit?" And in that moment, suddenly, I thought he was really fit. I dont mean I lied and pretended to join I mean in that split second I suddenly started to feel something towards him that I did not before. And for some reason, this time I was acutely conscious of the fact that I did not find him attractive before she said anything. And this event really stayed with me and I was pondering it for ages, and started to realise that basically every guy I'd fancied up to that point I'd actually done the same thing with. Like I would have no inclination to get with a boy until he or someone else put the idea in my head. And I was latching on to that idea every time. And this feeling was not following through, I'm not gonna go into detail about sex I was having but basically yeah it didn't hold up. And just like that, I basically just realised that a lot of my attraction to men was the same as it was when i was 12 years old: all about about the idea of it and not really about them, or my enjoyment at all. I linked this back to my obsession with being this figure of "girl all the guys want", despite the fact that I was now studying science at university, not doing make up and nearly all my friends were guys etc, I'd basically entirely let go of this persona, but the impact of having spent my whole life was that I could not distinguish between someone I liked and someone I liked the idea of and I could see it really clearly all of a sudden.

Initially I thought it was just me. Like I'd concocted this image of myself that had convinced me I was bisexual for years. Up until I started reading about other lesbians experiences with this- I wasnt alone and I wasnt even the oldest person just realising it. That was another big factor was that I felt way to old to still be questioning my sexuality, especially considering I was now out of the closet, I was involved in a lot of lgbt activism and politics and I just felt a bit pathetic. Realising this was actually a really common experience, actually including feeling more of this "attraction" to men after coming out, was honestly not just a huge relief to me but also just made me feel more comfortable identifying as a lesbian, and not feeling like I had to justify every past relationship I'd had with men in order to do so.

Now I actually still have a lot of friends who think I'm bisexual. I do tell people I'm not, but they dont believe me a lot of the time, and I dont blame them. I understand that I got with a lot of boys and they just see that and think "shes definitely bi". They're mostly men, quite a few of them are straight and people just arent aware that this is a thing that lesbians experience. That pretty much concludes my story, and I just wanna say that the reason I'm posting this is not, as I said at the top, about "winning" this "argument" I was having, I just want people to see this stuff. I just shared contrpoints video where she talks about the same stuff, saying how one of my friends actually got in touch with me after seeing that to say he kind of could see what I meant about me being a lesbian. Call it comphet call it whatever you want. The point is, it is a common experience, and it is something people struggle with, even after realising that that's what it is, it doesn't go away when you put a name to it. Recognising it does help though, it's been a while now since I've even contemplated being with any man. Also when you do feel that stuff, it helps to just ask yourself if what you're feeling is attraction, or a buzz from the idea of it. Having an understanding that it's not just about forcing yourself but actually you feel something genuine, but that that something is not attraction really helps to understand it aswell.

There are things I’ve liked casually that I ended up not caring about later on, but nothing that I loved that I started hating later. I might shift from being obsessed with something to just being chill about it, but that’s it.

when ( if ) you become a parent, what will you do differently, compared to how your parents raised you? >> I don’t plan on being a parent, but how I treat children in general is almost directly in contrast to how I was treated as a child. I treat them with respect, I listen to what they have to say, I let them feel their feelings, I show interest in their interests, etc.

do you equate spanking with physical abuse? would you spank a child? >> Let’s just say that I did not ever feel loved or respected when I was spanked. I felt terrified and shameful and being left alone to self-soothe afterwards with no real understanding of why I was being punished so harshly definitely didn’t help. im more confident in expressing it online through my shitposting lol. irl im not as open about my sexuality. ive tried to be a little more this year but it left me feeling a little uncomfortable because of the situation. i dont really think about //expressing// my sexuality or gender that much. i dont dress in a certain way or anything that is explicitly +*+*+gay lol

15. Has Tumblr been more harmful of beneficial to you when it comes to discussing LGBT issues or figuring yourself out?

more beneficial. its a space where i actually feel comfortable and confident to be gay. im super proud of my sexuality but like ?? sometimes even when u feel that love n passion toward it some RL circumstances can lowkey drag u thru the mud so its a nice place to come and be unapologetically gay tbh ! fandom has been good for this too. like coming on here and reading fic and seeing art etc abt beautiful wonderful wlw is so lovely and makes my heart feel so nice and soft ! and sharing this experience with other people on here has been all around a pretty wholesome nurturing experience and im pretty grateful for that.

16. What LGBT charities/organizations do you support?

there aren’t really any i follow specifically and i dont have a lot of money so its hard to give to things but i do appreciate the organisations trying to help lgbt ppl ! i know there are a lot out there. ive bought things from love is louder before because im a fuckin slut for britt snow and i really appreciate what she’s doing with that does that count lmao

im somewhere between functional and disaster depending on the day.

i really enjoyed love, simon... also i liked below her mouth even tho its kinda mostly porn lol. my favorite film of all time is Frida which i mean? counts right. and actor omg there are sOOOO many ! i friggin love stephanie beatriz tbh but there are a lot of badass lgbt ppl out there

19. Is your current environment supportive?

i mean... yeah... i live with a rly queer nb gay af person who literally writes and performs theatre shows abt being queer so being gay is something we really celebrate here! id really like to have more gay friends here who i can hang out with tho it would make it a lot more enjoyable !

20. What are your plans for this June?

TREMONTAINE Season 3, Episode 3 Reaction + Review

Episode 3 moved the plot faster than I expected, with well-placed surprises all over. Karen Lord's first Tremontaine episode was a pure treat. I was glad I was alone while I read it because, uh, lots of exclaiming and screaming happened.

FINALLY. I GOT ENOUGH TIME. TO DO THIS. As always, full review and spoilers under the cut!

I did my last two reviews by character, but this time I'm gonna divvy it up by groups, because it's the group dynamics that made this chapter shine for me.

RAFE, MICAH & JOSHUA

Let me start this off by saying that I have loved Joshua from Season 1. He is my favorite minor character in this series and no one has yet to take his place, so it made me ecstatic when this episode opened with Rafe and Micah going to see him!

It made me a bit nostalgic to see Rafe and Micah back in the University district. Ah, simpler times. Even Florian's cynicism and general unpleasantness isn't enough to sour my mood because Joshua was in his A-game in this one, mediating and checking up on both Rafe and Micah.

I adore how he genuinely cares about both Rafe and Micah, and how he knows exactly how to handle them both.

He's 100% on Rafe's plan now, and really he is ESSENTIAL to this because while Rafe has drive and commitment to do what needs to be done, the guy's just not the one you'd trust with the details that will make the doing possible. Rafe comes up with the headlines and Joshua comes up with the bullet points under each. They make a great team this way and I hope they keep at it. Not to mention the pure trust they have between them, which is something Rafe really needs right now as he moves forward.

“And Rafe, though you do suffer prettily, we can’t waste this opportunity. Call up the older, wiser man that you will no doubt become ten years hence and put him to work today!"

SOLID ADVICE, RAFE. TAKE IT.

Then there's Micah! And gosh, I've always loved Joshua and Micah's bond and this chapter reminded me of it. Joshua knows how to handle Micah, and how to explain things to her. I love that he sees Micah's stay at Tremontaine as potentially something other than the Duchess extending a generous hand to a brilliant mathematician.

“Diane Duchess Tremontaine is my friend.” Micah raised her voice a little. “Like you’re my friend and Rafe’s my friend.” She found herself hugging the bunched-up dress.

Cue me cooing "Babyyyyyy!!!" and crossing my fingers that if Joshua's worries ever do come true, maybe Diane will not be so cruel when Micah has to go? Maybe don't hurt her, don't hurt me so much...? PLEASE?

Seeing Micah realized that she was 'categorizing', looking for patterns and observing to learn more about other people? It was a joy. And in the end, Joshua managed to get her to reconsider always taking things at face value.

We all need a Joshua in our lives, tbh.

KAAB & THE KINWIINIK

Kaab learning about Vincent's 'death' and her moment of mourning before composing herself and forcing a sort of 'closure' to her ties at Riverside then making up her mind to focus her full attention in the family? That was beautifully-written.

She would carry only her obsidian dagger, as befitted a first daughter of the Balam and a leader of the Kinwiinik.

You're got a long way to go, little bee. But you're trying your hardest and it will be interesting to watch your journey.

Also, kudos to the writers for keeping up this general air of melancholy and mourning in the Kinwiinik's scenes. Saabim was this subtle, lingering presence in these scenes and Chuleb's outburst, among others, really brought out how much she meant to her whole family.

And the reveal that she might have been murdered just put a new layer of tension and more pressure on Kaab. And with this new network of spies in her control, she is finally learning that she should balance style and substance.

No posturing. Only results.

I'm really looking forward to how she'll go from here, since it's a good shift of her role from Season 2's agent to this season's spymaster. Plus, there's the mysterious last mystery spy who is not yet satisfied… and I gotta admit their message gave me chills.

TESS, SHADE & RIVERSIDE

I wasn't expecting this plotline to be resolved this quickly! I was expecting Shade to reappear next episode, actually, but I guess we're going it now. Okay, then-

I do think Tess doesn't know how much of a force she is in Riverside. She might think she's just another business owner, but like she also said, they RUN Riverside. The place is pretty much owned by this network of ladies who keep things running and in place, and if you turn them against you, you're hopeless.

“See how fine you are when there’s no place for you to eat, sleep, or piss in peace throughout Riverside.”

-and Tess? Tess is a leader figure for these women, whether they all realize it or not. She leads the meeting, she takes the votes, she calls the shots. It's a chaotic sort of democracy with her in the lead.

And then the Salamander shows up and personally backs her up. With a friend like that, she has pretty much cemented herself as a power in Riverside you don't mess with.

Sure enough, the ladies got shit done. Thank you, ladies.

Plus Reza, I guess. My man finally got some chill and went with the flow, providing some necessary sword-related backup to Tess and the ladies. He recognized that they run the place and know what they're doing. Good job, my dude.

That 'emerging from the shadows with a sword drawn at the ready' is such a classic, and it's these tiny, vividly-described scenes are what makes me wish there's a movie or TV series I could watch to just SEE these visuals. G O D.

Tbh, I didn't think Shade loved Florian THAT MUCH. Between the two of them I thought Shade was the one who was in it for fun but oh shit okay maybe… he wasn't… oh my. RIP bro. You're a creepy dude but I guess surrendering yourself like that not for Riverside, not for yourself, but for Florian was… kinda sweet I guess?

That bit reminded me of something from Fall of The Kings. I'm not sure exactly what, or who, since it's been quite long since I last read it. I just… got a vague feeling about it. The mood, maybe? *helpless shrug*

I didn't expect the stoning that happened, though. Riversiders don't mess around.

I'm pretty sure this still has an aftermath, some sort of consequence. And I'm waiting to see it.

DIANE & ESHA

*fans self*

I DIDN'T EXPECT THAT EITHER I CAN'T

IT'S BEEN MORE THAN A WEEK AND I WILL NEVER GET OVER THIS DAMN YOU ALL THANKS

Okay, I'll try to calm down. So.

“I dislike weak men in positions of power that they do not merit.”

YES, ESHA.

Their whole conversation before… uh, the honey… it was so good? These are women who have precarious positions in society and have both used their cunning to maintain that.

I love that Esha tells Diane off for how she actually enjoys this dangerous game of 'flirting back' and Diane couldn't find it in herself to deny. It spoke volumes to how much Diane actually feels for Esha. And then, because that wasn't enough-

Diane's reaction to being potentially rejected? PRICELESS. When was the last time Diane was taken off guard about something personal-and-non-political and couldn't quite recover fast enough?

And then Diane spills the honey and-

Well.

That’s it. I just really loved this episode okay.
