My Love Is Not A Joke - [Mammon x Reader]

Fandom: Obey Me! Ship: Mammon x gn! reader Word Count: 1.9k Rating: T A/N: just thinkin about the amount of effort it would take to convince mammon you actually like him and you’re not just being an ass to him like everyone else made me feel a lot of thiiiings and then this was born lol.

Mammon lives in a liminal space between fear and a love so fierce it threatens to consume him. It’s a hell of his own making-- too cowardly to tell you how he really feels and too devoted to let you go.

And so you are forced to exist in this hellish space with him. Each time you try to get close he pushes you away, afraid he’ll be the butt of just another joke. Each time you try to give him space he pulls you back in, terrified you might leave him. It’s an exhausting game of tug of war between his ego and his heart and, frankly, you’re sick of being the god damn rope.

Eventually you reach your breaking point.

You are lying in bed, staring at the ceiling and replaying another days worth of back and forths between you and a certain white haired demon boy. This has become as much a part of your night time routine as putting on pajamas or brushing your teeth. Every flush of his cheeks-- be it in anger or embarrassment or affection-- every dumb argument, or sweet sentiment, or stupid joke. They all play like a never ending feedback loop in your mind. But tonight a thought strikes you as you roll over to finally try and get some sleep-- as long as Mammon is engaged in this endless war against himself you’ll be stuck in it right along side him. He’s never going to give himself peace. He’ll fight until there’s nothing left of himself. So if the two of you are going to get out of this mess it comes down to you.

It’s a scary thought, the idea you might have to be vulnerable and make the first actual move. Scary enough that you try and let it go. Maybe you can just sleep on it and think about it more in the morning.

But now you can’t think of anything else. The thought begins to ruminate in your brain and there’s no way you can sleep at this point. You stay awake all night wondering if there’s any other solution. Any other way out of this mess. It turns out you also exist in the liminal space between fear and love. The idea of telling Mammon how you feel is paralyzing. And so you go to school the next day not having slept at all.

This pattern continues for nearly a week. Each night you stare at your ceiling going round and round in circles. And maybe Mammon can take this awful tug of war but you certainly can’t. You don’t have millennia to stay away pondering this shit. You’re a mortal and you’re being driven in-fucking-sane. So finally, on the seventh night of nearly no god damn sleep, you fling off your covers and irritably begin stomping down the hall.

You ignore Beel who is hip deep inside the refrigerator cleaning it out of whatever the hell is left inside. You passively wave to Levi when he sticks his head out of his room to ask you to play games and mumble some lame excuse. You’re on a mission to resolve this once and for all and nothing will stop you.

You make a beeline to your destination and once you reach Mammon’s door you begin to pound on it aggressively.

A familiar voice rings out from inside. “Jeez, cool it, Lucifer. I told you, I’m working on it. I’ll have all these late assignments done by tomorrow just gimme some time.”

“It’s me.”

There’s a pause and you can’t practically hear the gears turning in Mammon’s head as he registers who is speaking.

“Oh well why the hell didn’t ya just say so? Come in.”

You open the door to his room and find Mammon sprawled out in one of the arm chairs in the center of his room. His feet are propped up on the table and his leather jacket is flung over the couch opposite of him, leaving him in his normal jeans and black shirt. You can tell he’s been running his fingers through his white hair in frustration as it’s mused and messier than normal and his brows are knit in concentration as he looks down at his notebooks.

“Stupid Lucifer. Makin’ me do all this damn work in one night. It’s not fair.” He says, tossing the books onto the table as you shut the door behind you and approach him.

You have a rebuttal about how it’s not exactly ‘unfair’ since all of that work had been assigned weeks ago, but it dies on your lips when he looks up at you. You can feel you heart jump into your throat as your eyes meet, the normal façade of the student mode dropped here where he is comfortable and alone. People often attribute fastidiousness with appearance with Asmo, but Mammon is usually just as put together. Seeing him so relaxed is special, it’s something you know he reserves for only people close to him.

Your not sure how long you stand there at the edge of his chair looking down at him but it must be longer than normal because the sound of Mammon clearing his throat pulls your attention. “Eh? Do I have something on my face? You’re staring and it’s weirding me out.” His cheeks are pink and he looks absolutely anywhere but your face. “Anyway, what the hell are you doing here in the middle of the night? Couldn’t wait to see me until tomorrow, huh?”

Well.. It’s now or never. You’ve plucked up enough courage to make it this far so you might as well commit.

“Mammon, I like you. A lot. And I hope that doesn’t make you uncomfortable but I just... do. So. Yeah... Do with that what you will.”

If you weren’t borderline unhinged from the complete lack of sleep and frayed nerves and being so vulnerable, you would find the way his eyes quadrupled in size fucking hilarious.

“Wha? What do you mean? Is this some sort of dumb prank.” You can see him looking past you at the door. He’s searching for his brothers, searching for a camera, searching for the evidence that this is all some elaborate joke at his expense. You can already hear the derisive laughter he’s waiting for playing in his head. ‘Stupid, Mammon.’ ‘How could you think they would ever like you?’ ‘Got you good, huh?’ ‘Actually thought that they might like you? You’re even dumber than we thought-’

You cut off whatever string of insults he’s playing in his own hand by gently touching his face, cupping his cheek with your hand.

“It’s not a joke, Mammon. I like you. And I understand if you don’t feel the same way but... I need you to know that.”

It’s clear that the moment you touch his skin his internalized war rises into a crescendo. It breaks you open to see his eyes soften with a vulnerability you’ve never seen before, blue gold shimmering with an emotion you can’t quite place but sends your heart hammering harder than it ever has before... and then immediately they harden again. “Do you have a fever or something?! Jeez, leave it to a human to get sick right when I’m supposed to be doing something else. I don’t always have time to be-”

He begins to rise from the chair and it’s clear he wants to run, wants to hide, wants to lick his wounds before they can even form. You can tell he’s already written this off as another joke at his expense. If you let him get away from you right now you’ll lose that look you found in his eyes just moments ago for good.

You push down on his shoulders, seating him in the chair again, and then wordlessly climb on top of him, pinning him beneath your weight. Surely he could pick you up and yeet you across the entire god damn room if he wanted to, but the action seems to break the string of negative self talk long enough for you to actually speak to him.

“Mammon.” You grab his face between your hands and force him to look at you. His expression is wild-- scared and hopeful and completely unguarded. “I. Like. You. And it’s not some joke. If you don’t feel the same way just tell me. But if you do-”

You don’t get to finish the rest of the sentence.

Mammon kisses you like you are oxygen and he’s on the verge of drowning. One hand shoots up to the back of your neck, pulling you close, tangling his long tanned fingers in your hair. The other comes to rest on your thigh. It’s all you can do to twine your own fingers through his soft white hair and pull him closer as he rocks into your body. You feel tears begin to well in the corner of your eyes as a surge of emotion races through you. You’ve never felt so much for one person in all your life. It’s enough to make you feel like you’re being crushed under the weight of it all.

At some point you physically can’t keep kissing him because you’re afraid you might actually suffocate. You pull back to take in a breath but he continues to hold you close, keeping his hands in your hair, lips still only inches from your own. You look at him, his eyes are more gold than blue now and you feel like you might catch fire if you look at him too long. You let out a breathy “Oh...”

Apparently he’s decided you’ve had enough time to breath and he’s on you again, pulling you close and making desperate little noises every time you part lips even briefly. You wonder if maybe you can die from catching on fire internally because every part of you feels like it’s engulfed in flames.

Eventually you manage to part again, long enough to put a hand on his chest and keep him from chasing your lips. You’re breathing heavily, trying to suck in air but finding it hard to do so when Mammon is looking at you like he’s just waiting for the chance to devour you again.

“So..” your voice comes out an octave higher than normal and your face turns scarlet, clearing your throat so you can try to speak somewhat normal. “Uh.. I take it... we’re on the same page then? Y’know... about... stuff...?” You’re not exactly eloquent but Mammon just kissed you to the point of ceasing brain function so, really, who can blame you?

There’s a beat of silence, and then Mammon speaks, voice deeper, quieter, and more serious than you’ve ever heard it before. “Don’t leave, okay?”

You’re not really sure what he’s referring to. Leave this chair? Leave the Devildom? Leave him? But he’s raw and real and so fucking perfect staring up at you perfectly kissed like that and the answer comes to you without thinking.

“Never. I’m never leaving. I’m here for as long as you want me.”

Suddenly both of his arms are around your waist, drawing you close. Your face is pushed into his neck and his into yours. You breathe in the smell of his aftershave and shampoo and you’ve never felt more at home. Your hearts are pressed up against one another and you know you’ve never felt more right than in this moment.

The last thing you hear him whisper as you drift off to sleep for the first time in nearly a week is a whispered. “Always... I’m always going to want you, silly human.”

Rebirth to Rebloom

Summary: Dan Howell met Phil Lester while they were still in high school when Phil was helping him out. But as time went on, they lost touch when Phil graduated, and they never speak. Dan thought of him often and hung onto his crush all these years until Phil shows up at the flower shop he works and asks for Dan’s help arranging flowers for his daughters birthday.

Dan first met Phil freshman year of high school. Phil was the graduating senior who had full control over Dan’s seminar class to help the freshman kids adjust to being in high school. Phil was just really kind to Dan. Dan felt like he held Phil in a higher position of trust than he held any other authority figure in his school. Phil was someone that Dan genuinely looked up to.

Throughout freshman year, Dan wished he was able to grow closer to Phil but the truth was that it just didn’t ever happen. It wasn’t some dreamlike scenario where Dan grew close to Phil and then Phil grew close to him and sparks flew. In fact, it was much more of the opposite.

Dan knew he had a crush on Phil pretty early on. He hadn’t come to terms with anything to do with his sexuality and frankly, that crush scared him. He didn’t know why he was looking at Phil differently than he looked at girls. He didn’t know why he suddenly begin to daydream about what it would be like to have Phil hug him or even hold his hand and…kiss him. He didn’t know why he was even thinking about all of this but suddenly he began to realize that his crush was definitely a crush and fuck he was beginning to get head over heels crazy about Phil.

One day after freshman seminar, Dan asked Phil if he could talk privately. Phil had gleefully accepted and hurried the other students out of the room so he and Dan could talk. Dan doesn’t know what struck him to want to talk with Phil about this but he does.

When Phil sits down in front of him, Dan blurts out what he’s been wanting to say. “I think I might be gay.”

At first, Phil’s eyes went a bit wide and that made Dan nervous but then Phil’s expression softened and Dan realized that he was in no real trouble by admitting this. “There isn’t anything wrong with that,” was Phil’s response.

Dan felt so relieved that Phil wasn’t saying anything differently about Dan’s admission. There was just something that felt so much more relaxed.

They spoke for a half an hour following that. Dan got out all of his feelings and Phil just listened and gave advice where he could. And Dan honestly—and maybe a bit selfishly—waited to see if maybe, just maybe, Phil would say something about his sexuality too.

And he did. But not what Dan wanted to hear.

“My girlfriend Alyssa is bisexual so I��m sure if I told her about your sexuality struggles, she would be really grateful to help you out! I can even have her message you on Facebook if you want.”

Dan’s heart shattered in that moment. He tried to hide how sad and broken that confession made him with a smile and a thankful nod as he hurriedly made some excuse that he needed to get out to meet his mom in the parking lot. That wasn’t true—Dan always walked to school.

When he got halfway home, he stopped on the sidewalk and dropped onto a curb and let out a few muffled cries into his arms. He shouldn’t have gotten so worked up about Phil. He knew it was never going to happen but yet, it still hurt to hear that anyway.

He got up after a few minutes and made his way home where he told his mom he wanted to be alone for the night and he headed up to his room. Two hours later, more tears came as he saw he had a friend request from both Phil and Alyssa on Facebook.

He accepted both and then turned his phone off.

The rest of freshman year was difficult with seeing Phil every other day for seminar. But eventually he got over his unrequited crush and on the last day of freshman year, he even gave Phil a hug and congratulated him on graduating.

Dan thought that that was the last time he’d ever see or hear from Phil. But little did he know that his chance to be friends with Phil would could again nearly ten years later.

Dan maneuvered through the shelves of his flower shop, picking up flowers and placing them back into their respective containers. He didn’t technically own the store, but he sometimes feels like he does with the amount of work he does here.

His friend from high school, Gina, decided to open up a flower shop in their hometown right after high school and while Dan didn’t originally have any say in the shop, Gina eventually talked him into working here. So Dan’s degree in philosophy went into a bin for later and he instead put on a green apron and a pair of elbow high rubber gloves.

Dan knew next to nothing about flowers but after working there for three years, he’s beginning to know a bit more every single day…even if Gina isn’t here all that often. Although, Dan can’t entirely blame her. She does have a three year old son and she is a single parent so he does understand it. He can’t imagine how tough it must be but on the rare chance that she brings in Lucas to the store, he loves chasing the little tot around the aisles.

This day was like any other for the store. Dan opened it so Gina could take Lucas to the doctors and then he spent his morning rearranging flowers and putting together new arraignments to put in the window display. He hasn’t had any customers in person but they have a few online orders that he needs to have ready for tomorrow so he’ll work on those sometime this afternoon.

He’s still working on fixing up one of the flower displays on the shelf when the bell over the front door rings and Dan stands up from his kneeling stance and brushes his soiled hands on his already stained apron.

Dan makes his way, weaving through the aisles until he finds himself coming to the counter. He instinctively picks his head up and begins to say “Welcome to Gina’s, how can we help you?” when he’s suddenly cut off by the attractive male standing with his back to Dan. His hair is black as a raven’s feathers and he’s wearing a red bomber jacket with black skinny jeans and Dan instantly stops in his tracks.

He takes a deep breath and lets it out as he smoothes down his clothing and reaches up to try and fix his tangled curls. He hopes he doesn’t have any dirt on his cheek or some shit that could look embarrassing.

The male turns around and flashes a smile and then Dan realizes who it is.

That’s Phil. Senior Phil who Dan was hopelessly in love with in high school.

“Oh my god.”

Phil’s blue eyes widen and he’s squinting a bit underneath his glasses. “Dan?”

“Phil?”

“Hi!” Phil says, walking forward and pushing his car keys and phone into his pocket. “Wow, this is unexpected. It’s been so long.”

“I know.” Dan says, feeling a blush begin to creep up onto his cheeks.

“How have you been? How was high school?”

Pretty shit. I was bullied nearly every day my senior year after I came out via a Facebook post but that’s okay because I managed to be salutatorian and that counts for something. “It went okay.”

Phil reaches up and rubs the back of his neck with his hand. “High school is pretty shit, to be fair.” He says. “College was a lot better.”

Dan scoffs. “That’s the understatement of the century.”

Phil laughs and Dan watches as his tongue sticks out from between his teeth and suddenly Dan is being hurled back into his high school days where he was crushing so damn hard on Phil.

“So you’re probably wondering why I’m here,” Phil begins with a chuckle. “I actually need some help. So my daughters birthday is in two days and I have nothing for her party but she loves anything to do with flowers so can you help me pick some out for her?”

Dan feels the smile fall from his face as he tries to hide his sadness. Phil has a daughter. That probably means his ended up marrying Alyssa and having a child with her. And that means Phil is definitely straight and Dan’s dream of rekindling his crush is immediately flushed away.

Dan nods with a painful smile and then motions for Phil him to the counter. Dan bent down and pulled out a book of flower meanings that Gina had left for him to look over and he opened it up to the tab that read ‘for children’.

He immediately sees that Lily’s are listed and Daisy’s are too so he looks up at Phil and points to them. “Lily’s are actually symbolic of daughters so if you want to give her a flower that not only looks pretty but also is a deeper meaning for her, that is your best choice. But daisy’s are good too if you wanted to do a mix.”

Phil looked at them and then nodded with a smile. “Remi would love lily’s honestly. I’m sure she would absolutely adore having them for her party.”

Dan smiled at Phil and then closed the binder and pulled out an order form from the slip that Gina had next to the register. “We can fill out an order form then and you can give me a pick up time and date and I’ll have them ready?”

Phil nodded quickly and smiled in relief at Dan. “That would be amazing, Dan. Remi is going to love them.”

They quickly filled out the order form and Phil put down that he would pick up the flowers at 9am that Friday and while the store doesn’t open until 10:30, Dan would be willing to come in early to supply Phil with the flowers he needs.

“Thank you.” Phil says, handing Dan his credit card when they begin to process the price for the order. “I seriously thought I was going to be screwed with how last minute I was but time has just been getting away from me lately. Like Remi is turning four this year and I’m actually in tears watching her grow up.”

“It must be hard.” Dan says, his voice a bit stiff. “The owner of this shop, Gina, has a son Lucas and he’s a handful but he’s growing so fast. I remember the day he was born and now he’s going to pre-k next year.”

“It’s amazing, isn’t it? How fast time goes when you’re out of high school.”

Dan nods with a smile. Because it is true and it only becomes more and more painfully aware when he thinks about how he is 24 years old and painfully single.

Phil finishes paying and then says his goodbyes with a ‘it was good seeing you’. As the door chime shut and Dan is left alone again, a few tears spring to his eyes that he wills to hold down because it was just another stupid crush coming to light. And he didn’t want that to effect him. He knew long ago that Phil wouldn’t feel the same way and it’s certain he won’t now so Dan needs to accept that.

Even if it hurts him a bit more to know that Phil has a daughter and he was going to be fixing a bouquet of pink for her birthday.

The flower shop gets a call from Phil one day later. Dan expects the worst with the call. He’d been working on Phil and his daughter Remi’s flowers endlessly the last day. He doesn’t answer the call because he hears the phone from where he is water the hydrangeas but Gina does.

It turns out Phil needs the flowers delivered to his house on Friday at 9am because he isn’t going to have time to pick them up at the store. Gina originally tells Dan she’ll do it by dropping off her son at daycare and then swinging by the Lester residence but Dan asks to do it instead.

“I can do it.”

“You’re going to get up before 8 on a tomorrow to deliver flowers by 9 at a home twenty minutes away?”

“Yeah.”

Gina just scoffs and laughs a bit. “Okay mate. If you do this, I’ll pay you overtime.”

Dan just nods and smiles with a slight blush as he takes Phil’s address and sets it aside with the order. He then prepares a few more things for it before leaving to go home to his sad apartment for a sad lunch with his pet goldfish.

On Friday morning, Dan wakes up early, 6:30 to be exact, and gets ready. He styles his hair, something he never does, and then wets down his face, cleaning it and washing it to get some of the oils from his skin that sometimes like to accumulate when he’s anxious. He takes the time to get dressed nicely and then he leaves his flat with his car keys in hand and drives to Gina’s.

He can normally walk to Gina’s in just fifteen minutes but since he needed his car this morning, he double parked it in front of the shop and walked inside to get the order ready to go. He gets his car situated and everything ready and secured at just around quarter after eight and he leaves with his GPS telling him the way.

He makes his way out of the small town to a rural area just outside of the suburbs. He’s still driving down the street when the GPS tells him to make a turn down a short road and he ends up at a small ranch home surrounded by trees.

It’s cute, Dan presumes. It’s isolated and small but it looks great and Dan pulls into the driveway of the home just as the front door opens and Phil walks out. Dan parks his car and gets out, walking halfway to Phil.

“Thank you so much for being able to bring the flowers to my house.” Phil says. “Remi’s mom is…well, she’s not being fair right now and so I have to leave and pick up Remi by 10 and I would have never made it to pick up the flowers, bring them home, and then go and pick her up for her party.”

Dan feels his stomach clench and roll. So, Remi’s mom didn’t live with Phil…which meant they were separated?

“…you can bring the flowers inside for right now. I have a table all set.”

Dan snaps out of his thoughts to smile up at Phil and open the trunk of his car so they could take out the flower arrangements. Dan helped bring them inside Phil’s home and they set them on a table in the living room which had photos of Remi from the time she was a baby to one that was clearly taken not that long ago. Dan couldn’t help but look at how she looked so much like Phil. Her hair was red but she had stunning bright blue eyes and cheekbones to match.

The cake was sitting in the middle with the cover on it and it read “Happy 8th Birthday, Remi!” and it was decorated with little flowers and roses all over.

“Remi is going to be 8th this year.” Phil says. “I have such a hard time believing my little girl has gotten so much older. I remember when Alyssa called me on the phone and told me Remi was born, it was so surreal. I still remember what it was like to hold her for the first time. She was so small and fragile.”

Dan’s lips curled into a smile as he looked at Phil and Phil’s cheeks flushed red a bit. “She looks like you.”

Phil lets out a laugh. “She actually is a spitting image of Alyssa. I can’t look at Remi without thinking of her mother.” Phil pauses. “It’s both a blessing and a…”

Dan knows what Phil was about to say but maybe in this case it was best to leave certain things unsaid.

“Do you have any children, Dan?”

Dan shook his head and bit his lip. “Ah…no, I’m um…I’m gay.”

He sucks in a breath and waits for anything Phil might say back to him but just as soon as it looks like Phil might say something, Phil’s phone starts ringing and he leaves the room to answer it.

Dan looks around, looking at all of the pictures on the wall of Remi and Phil. There are no photos of Phil with anyone else but Remi. In fact, it doesn’t look like there are even any signs that anyone else lives here besides Phil and Remi.

Phil comes back just seconds later and lets out an apology. “Alyssa is asking to meet me early so I have to go now. Thank you for bringing the flowers here. I know it was probably super ridiculous to do this but it means a lot.”

“It’s really not a problem.”

They exchange a quick glance and Dan’s about to turn to leave when Phil brings him in for a tight hug. He releases Dan quickly and they both blush and Phil motions that he’s leaving so Dan follows him out and they leave right after each other.

“Get the flowers to the Lester Residence okay?”

Dan nods at Gina as he walks through the door and ends up at the counter.

“Of course.”

Gina gave him a knowing look. “Was there a reason you were so eager to take the flowers to Mr. Lester?”

Dan felt his mouth fall open and he quickly shook his head. “No! No. There is nothing going on…he’s…”

“Dan, you’re blushing like mad, babes.”

“He’s an old high school friend that I used to have a crush on.” Dan says and Gina coos. “But he’s straight and has a daughter and she was who the flowers were for.”

“And you two didn’t steal a cheeky kiss in the front door before you left?”

“Gina!”

She waved him off with a laugh. “I’m just taking the piss, babes.” She twirls a strand of her loose hair in her fingers. “Are you sure he’s straight?”

“Why else would he have a daughter?” Dan asks.

“Sweetie, you’re being a bit ridiculous.” She says. “Gay men can have children. Maybe it was a one night slip up. Or maybe he did fall in love with a woman for a short time. A man can have a daughter with a woman and then decide he wants to be with men instead.”

Dan feels a blush creep up his cheeks because Gina is completely correct.

The conversation ends and he spends the rest of his shift helping Gina rearrange some of the displays in her store and assist a few straggling customers.

Later that day when he goes home, he gets a message on Facebook from Phil Lester.

Phil Lester: Just wanted to tell you Remi loved her flowers!

Attached is a photo of his daughter stood in front of the table with a massive grin on her face. Her hair is pulled up in messy dutch braids and her glasses on her nose are slightly skewed but something in his heart swells a bit when he sees the photo.

Dan Howell: I’m so glad!

Phil Lester: Excuse me if this is too creepy or weird but…would you like to get coffee sometime? I’d like to catch up.

Despite how his anxiety was welling higher and higher as he walked to the cafe on the corner of first and main, Dan was still excited to meet up with Phil to catch up. It had been two weeks since Phil messaged him about the flowers but he had to wait to meet up with Remi went back to her mom’s for the weekend.

But now here he is, opening the door and seeing Phil sat at a table in the corner, his lips sipping from a black mug. Dan lets out a deep breath and walks over to him, a small hop in his step.

“Hey.”

Phil looks up from his coffee and smiles. “Hey.”

“How are you?”

“Could be better.” Phil answers. “Dropping Remi off is always really hard.”

Dan sits down in the chair across from Phil and lets a sympathetic look come across his face. “I’m sorry.”

Phil shrugs. “It’s okay. Alyssa and I have been co-parenting Remi since she was born so it’s something I’m used to but it hurts more and more the older she gets.” Phil shakes his head. “But you don’t want to hear about this. Tell me about what you’ve been up to since we last spoke.”

And Dan does. He tells Phil about high school and how he was salutatorian and then he tells Phil how he tried going to college but realized it wasn’t for him and got a dead end job at Urban Outfitters for a few years before he found his job with Gina who was a coworker he had from UO.

They finally get on the topic of relationships and Dan goes first. “I had a boyfriend for a few years but we wanted two different things in life. He wanted to party and get drunk every night and have drunken sex and I wanted to actually live my life and it didn’t work.”

Phil shook his head. “My ex was the same way. He wanted to spend more time hanging onto me and clinging onto me but any time I told him about Remi, he recoiled. He never wanted to meet her and it hurt because Remi will always be the first person in my life before anyone else.”

Dan tried to not linger on the word ‘he’ but he couldn’t help it.

“Remi is such an important part of your life,” Dan says. “If someone doesn’t want to meet her, they don’t belong in yours.”

Phil smiled at Dan and nodded. There was a silence between them for a moment before Phil looks up from his gaze at the table and smiles. “Dan?”

“Yeah.”

“Would I be too forward to ask if you would let me take you out on a date this weekend?”

They date for two months before Dan is introduced to Remi. Phil explains that he wants to make sure that Dan is serious about taking on a commitment of being in Remi’s life with Phil and he agrees almost instantly. Of course their relationship is new but they both knew from the moment they walked out of the coffee shop that they were supposed to have met again. It was fate telling them so.

They both felt the connection.

Their first date, they wind up at Dan’s apartment and it’s the best sex Dan’s ever had and despite all of that, waking up next to Phil convinces Dan that he’s the man he wants to wake up to the rest of his life.

The day Dan meets Remi, they go to the park together and he watches and plays with Remi on the swings as Phil watches. At the end of the day, Remi gives him a hug and then tells Phil how much she likes him and it makes a tear come from Dan’s eyes.

One year after they start dating, Dan moves in with Phil and Remi begins to call him her step-dad. He meets Alyssa and he feels more than happy when she welcomes him with open arms into Remi’s life. She even says she remembers him from high school.

And Dan still works at the flower shop with Gina but now instead of staring out the window and wondering where his life is going, he gets to stare at his ring finger and think about where his future is heading with Phil and Remi by his side.

And all of this happened because Phil came to them to do her flowers for her birthday.

POV: John Deacon x reader

Warnings: Lots of Roger-esque swearing

Abstract: Roger wants to make the speed of light out of this place; Deacy and reader share a hot space.

Roger Taylor knew what was going on here. During his thirty-some years, he had discovered the hard way just how easy it was to underestimate a man with an insanely high emotional intelligence; underestimating him tended to occur more often than he’d like to admit. He frequently wondered if it was his appearance, his high-pitched voice, or his talent that made people think he was just another pretty face, some blond model with no brain. That couldn’t be farther from the truth, and he had fought his entire life so far against that ill-assuming tide. He was shrewd. A multi-instrumental musician, songwriter, fashion icon (he’d like to think, anyway) should be well-respected among his peers. Maybe it was his temper? He was in touch with his emotions more than anyone else he knew; Freddie frequently said he was the emotional equivalent of a night at the opera. Roger couldn’t dispute this. He was proud of his emotional range and stubbornly believed his emotional prowess linked strongly to his emotional empowerment and vulnerability. For his emotional transparency was vulnerability of a very specific sort: even if he wasn’t sharing it with anyone in particular or sharing it with everyone in particular, it was still targeted, specific, and intentional openness.

For a man so deeply in tune with the emotions of the people around him and his own emotions, it was a new experience for him to find himself not united with his own current desires and his self-imposed limitations. This was causing him serious problems. Everything related to an emotional state for him. It was his core. Emotions were the road map he used to understand his own existence. Right now, he had either lost the map or torn it up in a fit of anger. His carefully created veneer of denial was crumbling. And try as he might to glue the delicate pieces back together, he was failing at every turn. Denial, an emotion like any other, was his shield. Denial protected him from what he was not ready to feel, confront, and process. As anyone who knows what it’s like to live a predominantly emotional life, it is exhausting, and safety measures, escape routes, and panic rooms must be utilized to keep the peace.

The ability to hide emotions until the appropriate time to deal with them was part of having a high emotional intelligence. Some people couldn’t read other people’s emotions to save their lives; you put a gun to Roger’s head, and he’d be able to identify the emotional ranges and feelings of anyone around him; he’d make a great foreign agent, he thought. The FBI, maybe; he could profile a bitch faster than most people took to tie their shoes; this was because of his perceptions and emotional intelligence; sure, Brain was just brilliant, but could he read a room’s emotions and play everyone in it? Probably not, Rog figured. The ability to recognize when certain emotions were right for certain situations was his wheelhouse. This didn’t mean he paid any attention to what he knew was appropriate, however. Having knowledge and using it were two vastly different things. Half of the fun was to be found in reading a room full of people, knowing what they wanted or expected, and giving them the exact opposite, giving them what they didn’t even know they wanted, and changing their minds with the swagger of his emotional charm: this was power. And it was better than any drug, and almost better than sex.

Right now, however, Roger had little control over himself and his own emotions. Reading the interior of his mind and heart, every alarm was going off in unison: FLY AWAY RUN AWAY.

This was Lydia’s fault, he angrily thought. Sure, being in touch with his emotions didn’t mean he was always honest about what he was feeling. Especially regarding love, falling in love, being in love…. No—

That’s not what’s happening here. Fuck that, he thought very loudly, trying to convince himself. Focus. But not on her—not on Lydia. Fuck. Bloody fucking fuck. Focus on Deacy and Y/N.

He placed his hands on either side of the door frame. One up higher, one down lower. He wore his too-fancy-for-the-occasion black tuxedo stripe pants, his too-dressed-down-for-the-occasion white classic tee shirt, a pair of over-worn high-tops, and what could only be a black fur coat of Lydia’s. It smelled like her, and he savored--NO NO savoring fucking nothing here. He peered at you and Deacy from behind his sepia circular prescription sunglasses. He was, essentially, too cool to be allowed. Roger Meddows Taylor was synonymous with illegal behavior. His blue eyes popped out from his tinted glasses as he surveyed the scene before him.

He effortlessly read the emotions on both of your faces. Every glance you and Deacy sent each other, every hesitant touch, every “accidentally” intentional touch, every unspoken word was a clue for Roger, and he was a bloodhound. There was a dreamy quality to your olive eyes that smacked of infatuation and confusion—no not confusion, Roger thought. It was more of an ignorance is bliss kind of emotional vacuousness he associated with early, blind love. He tried to not roll his eyes and tried desperately to not think of Lydia, with whom he was having his own blind feelings—STOP that bloody well right now. Deacy has this hopeful dewy glow that had nothing to do with sex and sweat. Pure joy, Roger thought. Pure fucking undivided, maybe even not fully registered, joy. Ah, to be young and in love—Roger banged a fist on the door frame, suddenly. His smile still stays on, whatever happens pain and fury would fuel his waning denial.

Roger saw your flushed face spark a look of concern at the quick eruption of his fist speaking what he would not give voice to yet. He continued to take in your haphazard dress and twisted tights, and Deacy’s barely zipped pants, and felt a keen sense of deja vu. We’ve already been here tonight. Get a room, he thought, he’d like to get a room with Lydia. Maybe every room. WHAT the fuck is wrong with me? He hated himself more than he hated the idea of Deacy’s new Queen record. He smashed his fist into the door frame again. Fuck. Focus. Fuck.

These details, NOT HIS EMOTIONAL DETAILS, he reminded himself, your clothing and glancing details, HOWEVER, told him a lot about you and your night. He hadn’t even had to witness it first hand, and he knew the landscape of your night like he knew every wink, every breath and beat of every time signature.

It was clear to Roger you both hadn’t actually had full on sex yet. Sure, you had experimented, licked and touched, kissed and felt, but he’d put serious money on the fact you hadn’t been penetrated and Deacy hadn’t cum. Fascinating and boring simultaneously. That’s got Deacy all over it.

He and Deacy liked games, similar flavors but completely different goals and power structures. Deacy’s was inherently equal with delaying of certain actions, while Roger favored a flat out war of equals where everyone got precisely what they wanted assuming, of course, they could negotiate it. Both had a hard time finding compatible partners because of this. It was easy to settle, especially for Roger, for a night of climaxing fun with a beauty just to feel close to somebody. Yet, it was never as fulfilling as sex with someone who wanted what you wanted too.

Lydia could negotiate her way around a room full of cats, or room full of blind people without breaking a sweat or running into anyone or setting anyone or any cat off course. She was good. Fantastic. Challenging. Formidable. Roger was a sauntering sapient, a fucking loudmouthed, dirty disaster. The denial kept slipping away from his talented grasp. God, I know we don’t talk, you tend to mess things up, but fucking help me, he thought. FOCUS.

If you and Deacy had actually had sex, he figured, you two wouldn’t be pawing at each other whenever anyone turned around or left you alone for more than a few minutes. Your and Deacy’s emotions were spilling out of your hands; he had seen it before. Fuck, he was going through it himself. Right now. In front of you and Deacy. Fuck, he thought.

“What—No self-control, mates?” He said, shaking his head at the two of you, while his own voice slightly shook, higher than normal.

“Coming from you that’s a laugh.” Deacy retorted.

Roger grinned, walking up to you. He sweetly and shamelessly planted a chaste kiss on your cheek. He turned to Deacy and mock-begrudgingly placed a kiss on his cheek. “Do try to get some sleep, children.” Leaving between to you both, he flashed a peace sign (best case scenario, worst case he was telling himself to fuck off) behind him as he walked down the stairs. Instead of his rainbow-sequin blazer, he had acquisitioned a fur coat, you recognized as Lydia’s; it was high summer, yet here he was, fur coat and all. Roger Taylor was the anomaly of a sudden blizzard smack dab in the middle of June.

The Blond God would try to control even the seasons, you thought. Maybe he already did. You couldn’t tell if his behavior had been erratic or normal, so you weren’t particularly concerned, and Deacy didn’t look worried, so you decided to let it slide and ignore it.

“I live with Lydia.” You explained to Deacy, satisfying the floating, unspoken question in the air. “And if I thought when I woke up this morning Roger Taylor and John Deacon would be in our apartment, I definitely would have done the dishes.”

Deacon laughed, kissing your cheek, “dishes are overrated.”

“Did you just claim my cheek back from Roger?”

“I did, yes.”

“Jealous?”

“I prefer possessively keen.”

“Is it okay if we do a tour later?” You asked, entering your apartment with a laugh. “I’m exhausted.”

“I’m more interested in your bedroom.” Deacy confided. “I can't stop now that we’ve started the whole thinking out loud confiding in each other thing.”

“It’s like I’m living in my own sitcom.” You said, swerving Deacy past several room towards the very back of the apartment.

You paused at the door to your bedroom, your sanctuary. Sharing this space had always been excessively private for you. You were about to let a man into the most secret areas of your life. He’d be free to explore and witness all the hidden dreams and trinkets to which your entire existence amounted. It would make you an open book, in a sense. This was a big step. And it was happening the same night you met.

Deacy, sensing some of this on your face, said “Before I owned my own home, my bedroom was all I had. Letting someone into that space took time for me. We don’t have to go in there if you’re not ready. The sofa would be accommodating, I’m sure.”

“I’m ready. It means a lot to me, this space. Sharing it with you will be my honor. I'm just trying to remember if I tidied up before leaving for the party…”

“Well, m’lady, when you see my home I’m sure you’ll understand just how little I care about neatness.” Deacy had affected a bow and brandished the door open for you.

Turning on the light, the first noticeable piece of furniture was your upright piano. Tried and true it had been your friend through many sleepless nights, more than you could count. There for you when no could understand you, when words failed you, there was always this: you could return to the music, and it would save you. You had a makeshift desk, a rather large dining room table in a corner. It was strewn with sheet music, text books, and a rotary phone. You had an enormous blackboard hanging on the wall behind your large bed. Musical notations were scribbled on it in half-asleep hurried handwriting. To the right of it on the wall was an even larger bulletin board with more stable notations pinned to it. You had a deep plum-colored armchair next to a window with a high stool next to it serving as an end table. A old cup of tea was resting on it from earlier in the day; several tabloid magazine rested under the cup. A record player was in the corner by the door, several albums rested in a very wide floor-to-ceiling shelf next to it. It was the tallest, largest piece in the room. A collection built over careful years of curating your tastes and passions. A bench in front of the bed had a rustic conifer-colored throw on it. The bedding was deep maroons and rusty oranges. Several dresses were layered on the bed, some inside out some discarded. The window was open, and slight breeze made the gauzy curtains twirl in the very late night, or exceptionally early morning. The floors were a dark-colored hardwood, with a simple beige area rug to finish it off. The closet was insignificant compared to the colorful and varied clothes covering the floor of it, obscuring several pairs of shoes while doing so. It was your favorite room in the apartment, besides the kitchen, and the bathroom’s fantastic antique claw-foot tub.

Deacy hadn’t said anything yet. “I know it’s not much,” you said, “but it’s mine and—“

“I love everything about it. It’s everything you love and are perfectly condensed into one space. I’m not sure what I expected, but this is you; it’s flawless. If you find me in the middle of the night looking at your record collection, you can’t blame me; it’s better than my own.”

“I get that a lot.” You laughed. Deacy gave you a look, one eyebrow raised, all innocent curiosity. “Oh, not from men I’m sleeping with, just people who know my interests and have heard of my collection.”

“Your collection is quite prodigious…” His hands fluttered past a row of plastic sleeve covers, making that all too specific soft clicking sound.

“You were gonna add for someone my age, weren’t you?” You asked playfully.

“I was and thought better of it; ten years isn’t too much.” He added, softly touching a few keys on your piano.

“Not to obsess over, no; and, I’ve decided it doesn’t matter to me.” You smiled at him, putting an end to that topic hopefully for the duration. “I don’t really have any pajamas for you to wear. Turn around while I change into mine?”

Deacy looked at you like maybe you were joking; his eyes squinted and his face angled as if trying to detect your humor through his chin. He put his hands over his eyes, then peeped through them slyly yet obviously.

“Really! Deacy! We haven’t seen each other naked. Close your eyes!” You were laughing as you said it, though you were quite serious. There was something sacred to preserve here, you thought. Some innocence to be stolen away if he saw you naked now and not during intercourse. It would be so anticlimactic for the first time you see someone naked was when they were struggling to put on their flannel bottoms, and not during some all out sexual to-do. He obeyed this time, to the letter, and kept his eyes shut until you had finished changing. “Okay, you can look now.”

He opened his eyes and smiled at you in the same way he had been smiling at you the first time he saw you: he was captivated. You were wearing a matching flannel set. Nondescript and routine. Yet he couldn’t take his eyes off you.

Was that love, he thought?

He began undoing his necktie, making sultry eye contact the entire time. He placed it on the armchair. He methodically unbuttoned each button of his blue shirt, removed it, and placed it on the armchair. He had a white tank top on under it, and that he kept on. He removed his black oxfords and red jeans next. His polka-dot boxers where sufficient pjs, you thought. Decorum was satisfied this night, though for how much longer, you weren’t sure. It would be hard enough to sleep in a bed next to Deacy without trying something. You had little hope you’d make it through the night.

You began removing the clothes from the bed, tossing them in your closet. You turned down the bed together and climbed in together.

Deacy reached out and took one of your hands in his, and happily held it, waiting to see if you had anything else to say besides your sleepy good-nights. You turned to him, moving in close, draping a leg across his, and laying your head on his shoulder. He wrapped an arm around your waist, breathing in the scent of your hair, and twirling a strand in his nimble fingers. Your soft snores were the only music he needed.

Undeniable - Chapter 7 (Happy Ending): To Be Where You Are - Khan Noonien Singh x OC

Summary: Zinalya and Khan finally reach the light at the end of the tunnel as her suggestion for them to be exiled together is accepted.

Warning: No angst, the only thing here is fluff. 😊

When she did look around the room in this moment, Zinalya saw that the remainder of the court only had several others who'd raised their hands in favour of the exile sentence. Specifically, so many others that there seemed to be about two thirds of them who had taken this side of the argument.

"Oh my god." She gasped to herself, her voice's volume still kept low, before she fully registered that she'd spoken at all.

"All those against?"

As she had just presumed, the others in the audience who now raised their hands in opposition to the success of her plan only took up the last remaining third - upon seeing this, her heart leapt up even higher. "Oh my god..." The words slipped out from her lips once more without her meaning for them to do so. "It worked..."

"The results of the vote are certain; Khan Noonien Singh, you are hereby sentenced to twenty years of exile on the planet designated Ceti Alpha V, and Miss Zinalya Chloe Hamilton, you are sentenced to accompany him for your own sentence of ten years. The convicted shall now be released into the custody of yourself and the rest of the USS Enterprise's senior personnel for transport to this planet, during which any further offences committed by him you will be declared as personally accountable for. This trial is now declared closed." At this, a wave of noise descended upon the room as everyone got up from their seats to leave, now that the matter was all done and over with.

"Scotty, how long do you think it'll take you to get the ship up and running again?" Jim asked this chief engineer as they walked out with the others.

"If I get everyone from the rest of my team working on it we should be able to get going in four days' time, give or take."

"Okay. Get to it as soon as you can." The captain nodded in acknowledgement.

"Aye, sir, I will do." He, Kirk and the other senior officers all experienced a wave of relief for Zinalya now that her alternative sentence recommendation had been fully accepted.

It was a minute on, or somewhat less, when the two who this development itself revolved around had gone up to the roof. A place where they could truly be alone.

"So... we did it?" She looked up at him, some strands of both his and her own hair fluttering about in the breeze up here.

"It seems that we did." Khan gave a nod of his head as he gave this reply. Zinalya didn’t think she’d ever stop getting warm shivers at the sound of his baritone voice.

"And basically for the next few days I’m supposed to be your babysitter, from the sound of it." The burgundy haired woman joked with a small chuckle.

"I can think of several outcomes and scenarios which would’ve been much more undesirable." She could see one corner of his mouth curling upwards into a small, genuine smile.

"Is that the translation for you telling me we're lucky?" Zin quirked her eyebrows lightheartedly while still showing a joking expression upon her face.

"Effectively, yes." He took a moment to wipe away some particular strands of her hair which ad blown very near to her eyes, her taking note in the process of the slight chill on his hands. Obviously being up on the roof of a tall building, like they were right now, would make anyone's hand temperature drop, but she'd managed to notice even when they were still indoors just a few seconds prior that this slight chill was still present; it seemed as if it were a constant characteristic of himself not unlike a personality trait. Her mother's hands also usually had this same chill to them - a peculiarity of the Trill - but Khan's own felt different, like some kind of entirely different coolness. "And I'm glad that it means we're able to touch each other now."

"Yeah. I am, too." She said, while simultaneously thinking in her mind without speaking it out loud that this chill to his hands was somewhat poetic: prior to this whole matter, they were a representation of his heart - a reflection of his inner self - but now they were a contrast to it. There was still a warmness to his heart before the last few days, but it took a jumpstart and a little bit of prompting to bring it out of the tiny, solitary box it had been sitting in and turn it into this contrast. "Should we go back inside? I think it’s getting a little cold up here." Asked Zinalya.

"I don’t think there’s any rush for us to leave this roof." Khan gave his reply, as his previously small smile grew to about three sizes and he then, without warning, reached towards her torso and pulled her towards his own. It wasn’t an unpleasant moment to her, only unexpected instead; in fact, it served as another warm shiver source. "And as for the coldness, there’s an easy way of remedying that." His arms slid around her shoulders and onto her back, to which she managed to slide her own hands up onto his chest and snuggle into it in that position. As he looked down and watched the wind whip up some of her hair again while she turned her head to one side, Khan continued to hold her and felt, for the first time, that he was fulfilled and was now well and truly whole.

At her apartment, Zin was still up and about several hours later, once the sky was very nearly dark. Khan, meanwhile, who she was allowing to stay there with her for the final few days before they left Earth now that he was apparently “in her custody”, was in a state of drifting in and out of consciousness but mainly remaining in the latter. She’d additionally come up with an agreement where, so that they could both remain warm and safe, they would share her bed over those nights, which was the location where these consciousness shifts were taking place.

She was about to go to her bedroom and join him now that she was in her nightgown, when she suddenly heard a knock at the apartment’s door. Wondering to herself about who it could be, the answer to this query was soon provided when she opened it.

"Oh, hey." Zinalya greeted the two people who were at the door, surprised - they had also been the last pair she’d expected to have voted in favour of her and Khan’s exile earlier that day. Spock and Bones. Stood right in front of her, on the landing which was exposed to the night air.

"Good evening, lieutenant-commander." Said Spock cordially, while the doctor nodded in his own silent greeting, and then asked out of curiosity, "Is he here?"

The word ‘he’ was a little bit of an ambiguous term, but she could nonetheless tell who the half Vulcan was referring to. Her lips tightened slightly but visibly as her eyes flicked between the two of them and she answered tersely with, "He is, yes; he’s asleep." She knew it would be unreasonable of her to be actually, properly angry at them after they’d done this aforementioned act of voting in her and Khan’s favour back in the courtroom, but she wanted to make her irritation seen - the act of them originally not agreeing with her and casting her feelings aside to condemn him in the first place meant she was still annoyed with both of them.

Spock took a moment of pause before he spoke again. "Dr. McCoy and I came here to tell you our reasons for the side we took our votes on, in the hopes that we can make amends with you."

She nodded her own head. "I’m listening."

"Because it seemed logical to contribute to allowing you to do as you wish. You are a trusted crewmate, lieutenant-commander Hamilton, so letting you do what you feel is right is the right thing for ourselves to do in turn."

"Plus, I didn’t wanna keep what happened yesterday fresh." Bones finally spoke up, and then took a breath during a second of his own before elaborating. "The stuff I said to you was way outta line, ‘cause you’re right: even if I have my own doubts about him, that doesn’t mean I can just tell you who you’re allowed to have feelings for. What I’m tryin’ to say is, I was wrong to say that stuff, and I’m sorry."

Now it was her turn to nod, her face’s look of irritation beginning to erode. "I’m sorry I slapped you, too."

"If it was me dealing with that and not you I probably would’ve done the same thing." The CMO replied reassuringly to this.

Zinalya’s expression afterwards slowly grew into a smile. "Thanks you two, it was kind of you to come here and tell me this."

"We didn’t wanna leave things between us like this for long. Hell, Spock’s got a little more trouble than me at expressing this..." He raised his eyebrows jokingly and chuckled.

"Thank you, doctor." This science officer himself commented in response, also in what sounded like a little bit of a lighthearted way of speaking.

"...But he was right when he just said how you’re a trusted crewmate, Zin."

Another positive event had just happened, which was the very subject that she’d expressed her worries to Scotty and Pavel about that morning: things had become patched back up again between her and McCoy and Spock. There seemed to now be no more of the feud between her and this duo which had been triggered during the previous afternoon, and this combined with the larger positive event which had taken place on this current day meant that, like Khan earlier, she suddenly felt herself become flooded with a mental sensation of fulfilment.

After a week of being bedridden with the common cold, Kim Namjoon was finally back to work at Min Cafe. Of course, Min Yoongi wouldn’t let him go back to work unless he got the ‘okay’ from two doctors and took another week of vacation to fully recover.

“You know, Yoongi. I understand if you wanted me to take another week of vacation to make sure my cold was gone, but two doctors?” Namjoon poured ice into a plastic cup of green tea lemonade.

“Hey, it’s my business, Joon. I don’t want you contaminating my customers or employees.” Yoongi called back.

Namjoon shrugged, thinking to himself well, he has a point.

It was a slow evening. The sun was just about to set and the once busy cafe began to slow down like it usually did. After arranging the scattered blender covers, Namjoon proceeded to transfer a few of the unopened boxes to the back room. His strength depleted a bit after lying down, drinking soup and water all day. He found himself tumbling into another stack of boxes and he could hear the faint sound of Yoongi laughing. Feeling a tad bit betrayed by his boss and long-term friend, he marched down the narrow hallway to question him.

It wasn’t common to witness Yoongi laughing cheerfully, especially laughing cheerfully with a girl that didn’t seem familiar.

“You know, y/n, you ordered the same thing every other day for the past two weeks. Don’t you want something different?” Yoongi questioned writing on the cup.

“Uh, nope! I like my coffee sweet.” You giggle handing him your card.

“Like you?” Yoongi joked making the transaction.

Namjoon didn’t mean to eavesdrop, but to his defense he was just passing by and he didn’t hear much of the conversation anyway. But he did cringe listening to Yoongi speak, was he always that cheesy?

“Yo, Joon! Take care of this drink for me please?” Namjoon grasped the plastic cup and read the messy handwriting. Iced vanilla creme latte.

He peered up and watched as you made your way from the register to the counter. Your fingers tapping away at your phone and your eyes never leaving the bright screen.

Namjoon would be lying to himself if he said you weren’t attractive. He glanced back and forth between the espresso machine and you. You wore a light washed denim jacket and a white v-neck underneath. Your chocolate brown hair was tied up in a messy pony tail that he found absolutely adorable. He heard a glimpse of your laughter from earlier and he swore he never heard anything so beautiful.

Namjoon poured the espresso shots into the plastic cup and he noticed something that made his heart drop into his stomach.

Fuck, what was your name?

Curse Yoongi for not saying your name loud enough and for not writing it on the cup. But most importantly, curse himself for not being able to catch at least the first letter of your name.

Namjoon was close to finishing up your drink and damn, he needed an excuse to know your name. It seemed desperate, but he decided to call out the order with a hint of wondering who the drink belonged to, so that maybe you could intervene with your name.

Yeah, that should work.

Subconsciously, Namjoon swept his platinum hair to his side trying to look a bit presentable. He barely had any energy left, so the chances of him looking decent was slim.

“U-Uh, a large vanilla creme latte for—?” He didn’t mean to stutter, but Namjoon really wanted to slap himself for doing so.

“That’s mine!” You tore your attention away from your phone to smile at Namjoon who had your drink ready. “Thank you so much. Have a good day now—Namjoon? Tell Yoongi I said bye!”

Just like that, you took off without the syllable of your name rolling off your tongue. Namjoon was practically heart broken knowing that his plan didn’t work the way he thought it would. But the way you leaned forward, use your index finger to point at his name tag and read off his name with a smile took his broken heart and pieced it back together again.

Yoongi returned from the back with a small case of napkins and took a look around the cafe. “Did she leave already?”

“Y-Yeah, she left. She left with her drink a-and yes she left.” Namjoon fumbled with his words as well as the napkins Yoongi handed to him. The stutter of his words made Yoongi squint at Namjoon.

“Dude, are you okay? Do you need to rest?”

“No, I’m fine. Just peachy!” The last of his words were said in an octave higher and Yoongi clicked his tongue, finally putting the pieces together.

“She’s cute, right?” Yoongi smirked. He attempted to drape an arm over his taller friend’s wide shoulders. “And plus, she’s totally your type!”

There was no use in lying. Namjoon’s face was as red as a tomato and if he even tried to lie, his words would tumble out in incoherent sentences.

“You seem comfortable with her.”

“I’ve known her for a while. She actually worked at the floral shop near my building, but her boss recently relocated to the shop not too far from here. She actually started coming here more often since she relocated and I swear, y/n orders the same damn thing when she’s here—”

Everything else Yoongi went on about became irrelevant after the mention of your name. Finally. Finally. Namjoon couldn’t stop smiling to himself. He finally had your name, but the problem was that you were no longer in the cafe and he couldn’t chat you up.

“Jesus Namjoon. Are you listening?” Yoongi swatted his friend’s forearm causing him to jump.

“Huh? Who went to the where?”

Yoongi chuckled and shook his head. He handed Namjoon a damp rag and squeezed his shoulder.

“Don’t worry, Romeo. You’ll still get a chance to see her.”

As the weeks went on, Yoongi was a man of his words. You came to the cafe almost every other day, ordering the same drink with an occasional cheese danish on the side. On majority of those days, Namjoon had the honor of making your drink and other days he stood behind the register taking your order trying not to choke on his words. Within those weeks, Namjoon barely took a moment to say a few words to you. He pondered whether or not he wanted to ask you how you were doing or if you wanted to join him for lunch. Instead, he stuck to the same script.

“Hey y/n! The usual?”

“Yeah, thanks Namjoon! No danish today.”

“Alright. Coming right up.”

It was a thursday and Namjoon had a day off, but he chose to spend his afternoon sitting at the bar counter in Min Cafe.

“You’ve been serving her her coffee for almost a month, Joon. And you’re telling me you didn’t ask her out yet?” Yoongi stood on the opposite side, adding whipped cream on top of an iced blended drink.

“Hey, it’s hard okay.” Namjoon groaned. It had been a while since he asked out a girl because he was busy focusing on himself since his last breakup. He kept himself busy with work, visiting his parents, and having casual hang outs with a few of his friends. He wasn’t too interested in going back into the “relationship scene” so quickly, but it all changed the moment he laid eyes on you.

Namjoon barely knew anything about you, but he felt a weird connection towards you. Fortunately, Yoongi was able to spill some beans about your personality, but he purposely left the details out so Namjoon could get to know you on his own.

“I could easily set you guys up you know, but—” Yoongi handed a drink to a customer. “You need to ask her out yourself, Joon.”

There was a voice inside of Namjoon that constantly nagged at him, telling him to grow a pair and just ask you out but he hesitated every time. An irritated groan rumbled from his chest. He pressed his forehead against the cool surface.

“Could-Could you make me some coffee, please?” He asked without looking up.

“Sure. An iced americano?”

“N-No. An iced vanilla creme latte…” Namjoon’s voice faded as he stated his request. He peered up and found Yoongi with his head cocked to the side and one hand on his hip.

“Seriously?”

The only thing Namjoon could do was flash a crooked smile hoping his friend could look past your desperate actions. Namjoon wasn’t one hundred percent sure what he was trying to do, but hopefully a cup of joe that reminded him of you would slap some sense into him.

All Yoongi could do was smile and let out a sigh. He started up the espresso machine and turned back to look at his “lovestruck” friend.

“Whatever sweetens your coffee, Romeo.”

The gods were probably watching Namjoon under a microscope, because not long after he received his drink, you walk in through the doors.

Your hair was messily tied up and slightly frizzing out. You were still wearing the dark blue corduroy apron with cute buttons on them. The long sleeves of your striped sweater underneath were rolled up to your elbows. The only items you had with you were a wristlet wallet and your cellphone tucked in the pocket of your apron.

Namjoon really didn’t mean to stare at you as you walked in, so when you caught his gaze and answered him with the softest smile, Namjoon almost lost his composure. He managed to smile back as you waltzed to the register to share a moment with Yoongi.

You had ordered the same drink every single time you walked in and Namjoon was curious as to why you were so addicted to it. He cautiously took a sip, knowing that he didn’t always prefer a sweet tasting cup of coffee. He winced at the amount of sugar he tasted at the first sip; he was definitely not used to the flavor. Namjoon wanted to swap the drink out with his usual americano, but he spotted you walking in his direction so he took another long sip. Ugh. Too sweet.

“Hi Namjoon! I’m surprised you’re not making my drink today.” The smile you gave him made his knees weak. Thank the heavens he was sitting down or else he would’ve melted into a puddle right in front of you. “What are you having?”

It didn’t register in his mind at first, but Namjoon finally came to and turned the cup around to reveal Yoongi’s messy handwriting. “You get it all the time. I was curious about what it tasted like.” He smiled at you sheepishly.

“Oh! Well, I hope you’re enjoying it. I guess you can say that I like that drink a latte.” You giggled and Yoongi groaned in agony after catching your pun. Namjoon, on the other hand, found it difficult to bite back his growing smile. He parted his lips to answer you, but Yoongi quickly interrupted with his own dialogue.

“Trust me, y/n. Joon is definitely enjoying it.”

Namjoon glared at his friend who was snickering whilst putting ice into the plastic cup. He wasn’t sure if the sugar was giving him a rush, but he made it clear in his mind that this was the perfect chance for him to swoop in and finally start a conversation.

“Are you on lunch break?” To Namjoon’s surprise, he didn’t stutter or mix up his words around.

“Sort of, I only took a quick ten minutes.” You reached across to get your drink from Yoongi. You took a long sip out of the straw, releasing a satisfied sigh. “I wanted to get something to eat, but I’m feeling indecisive today.”

Namjoon nodded his head and took another dreadful sip of his drink. Silence filled his head, feeling too shy to say anything else. Yoongi noticed and cleared his throat to get his friend’s attention. Namjoon glanced up and caught Yoongi’s wide eyed expression. He also mouthed out what seemed to be ask her out.

“U-Uh, y/n?” Namjoon sucked in a breath when you turned to lock eyes with him. “If you wanted to get something to eat, we could go to this great diner not too far from here. They have amazing paninis.”

Namjoon could feel Yoongi’s teasing grin all the way from the register. He finally did it. He asked you out without making a fool of himself.

“Um—” You started and Namjoon felt his heart shred into pieces. Okay, maybe he miscalculated his actions and set himself up for embarrassment especially in front of Yoongi.

“I-I mean, if you don’t want to, then that’s cool. It’s alright, no prob—”

“Namjoon, relax.” You laughed and settled your small hand on his large one. “I was just going to say that I only took a ten minute break, so I don’t think I can go out of the vicinity for lunch.”

Once again, the gods were watching and gave Namjoon another opportunity to continue the conversation.

“Are you free after work? We could go when you’re done.” He asked with a bit more confidence.

You cocked your head to the side and placed your drink beside his to fold your arms against your chest. On the inside, Namjoon was expecting the absolute worse, but what you said next were words he wasn’t expecting at all.

“Namjoon, are you asking me out on a date?”

A flatlining tone rang through Namjoon’s head and it was Yoongi’s stifled chuckle that brought him back to reality. It was a bold move and Namjoon attempted to be bolder.

“I-I’m trying. I don’t think I’m doing too well.” He laughed wryly.

You snickered at the adorable hue of pink on his cheeks and handed him your phone.

“You’re really cute, Namjoon. I finish work at four, I’ll call you when I’m done.” The smile you gave him opened a cage of butterflies into his stomach. Namjoon went from cowardly sputtering his sentences around you to inputting his number into your phone. You grinned at his contact information after getting your phone back. “Don’t think I won’t call you, okay? I promise I’ll call.”

There were no words to describe the way Namjoon was feeling. It was nervousness, excitement, relief, and delight all meshed together in a cocktail of emotions. He fumbled with his phone in between his fingers, dropping it onto the countertop.

“Y-Yeah. Okay, I’ll uh—I’ll be looking forward for the phone—I mean call! The call.” Namjoon could see Yoongi facepalming in his peripherals.

You let out the softest giggle that sends Namjoon on a ride of euphoria. “Bye Namjoon. I’ll see you later.” You accidentally took his drink, not that it mattered, and headed towards the cafe doors. “Oh, and thanks for the drink Yoongi! Bye!”

Namjoon rested his chin on his palm as he gazed at you leaving the cafe, your ponytail swaying side to side. It was his turn to let out a satisfied sigh as he recalled the moment that just took place. It wasn’t a daydream or a figment of his imagination; he asked you out on a casual date to eat paninis and you agreed to go.

Yoongi interrupted his thinking by starting up a blender. After pouring the contents into a cup, he stared at his dazed friend in silence. The owner of the drink claimed his order and as soon as he left, Namjoon cracked his knuckles and coughed. He didn’t feel that accomplished in a long time and the feeling was almost like an adrenaline rush. He took a long sip from the drink that was originally yours.

“Nailed it.”

Yoongi scrunched his face, restraining himself from throwing a plastic cup at Namjoon’s smug expression.

“Yeah. Smooth as sandpaper, Romeo.”

Queen Albums: Blind Reaction

Hello all! So, I’m a new a Queen fan, although I’ve been listening to their music more closely for a couple of months now. I’ve always been familiar with their greatest hits like “Bohemian Rhapsody”, “Don’t Stop Me Now”, “Under Pressure”, etc. I never really cared to listen closely until recently when I watched the movie and fell in love with the band. I listened to music a lot more recently, but haven’t dug into the albums really besides A Night at the Opera. So, without further delay, I’m gonna listen to their albums chronologically and react to them! We’re gonna begin first with their first album Queen. Let’s begin! (Disclaimer: this is probably not going to be professional in any sort of way.)

Keep Yourself Alive:

- Alright, right off the bat we have Brian playing guitar, and I’m digging it! It definitely is heavier than what I’ve heard in most of their later songs. If I remember right, this album had more heavy metal in it, so I’m not surprised. I love the sound of it though!

- Oh! I hear some stick and bass from Roger and John, very nice! I always love John’s bass work, his parts are so fun!

- Ah, here’s Freddie! So cool to hear him sing other songs besides the ones I know!

-Oh, is this song about chasing ambition? Or struggling with the chase for it? The lyrics are very interesting to me because they remind of Death On Two Legs.

- Okay, I should mention now that I’m watching the video of this song, and I love how glittery their outfits are. They all look so pretty lol.

- Hey, they’re all singing! Cool that they were doing stuff with the three’s voices from the start.

- Roger and Brian both get solos, and they sound so cool! Roger’s actually grabbed my attention more than Brian’s, but both were rad!

Okay, this was a good song! It definitely isn’t as crazy instrumentally, which makes sense since this is their first album and they’re trying to put themselves out there. I definitely can hear the heavy metal influence in this song and I’m curious as to how that shows in the rest of the album. Alright, next!

Doing Alright:

Oh! I recognize this title! Let’s see what it’s all about!

- Starts with some quiet piano playing, definitely different from the first song!

- Okay, so this is definitely a lot more chill and contemplative than the first song. With Freddie’s singing and Brian’s guitar work, it makes for a melancholy song.

- I really like the lyric in this song too. The music and the lyric really help capture the meaning of song so well. Everyone has times where they’re only getting by, and this song really encapsulates that pretty well.

- WOAH WOAH WOAH It just got VERY heavy metal all of the sudden. That’s very interesting! It almost shifts the tone of the song.

- Oh, it’s back to the original melody. Oh! Brian’s soloing again! Always nice to have that. I’m assuming that’s always a bit of a theme with Queen, since at lot of the music I’ve listened to with them always has Brian soloing at some point.

- Ugh, that is a gorgeous ending with the band members harmonizing and with the quiet piano.

I really liked how this song ended. I liked the song in general! I’m not sure about the shifts between the softer melody and the harder melody, but I still thought it was cool! I doubt they thought of this when making those shifts, but to me I felt like they did that to represent the scared uncertainty the person in the song was feeling about the next day. Shifting between believing that everything would be find and panicking that it won’t be. All in all, I enjoyed the song, and I can’t wait to hear the next one!

Great Rat King:

With a title like that, there already is a 30% increased chance of me liking it. We’ll see!

- This is definitely heavier, I can tell from the guitar and the ambience.

- The lyrics are definitely all Freddie. Only he would write about a Great Rat King and relate to religion.

- Dang, I hear some of the multi layering voice stuff they do later on! It’s so interesting to see them trying this stuff even in their first album, to see the root of it all!

- The melody’s interesting, but honestly I’m in awe of Brian’s musical versatility. I think I heard three different types of guitar throughout the song and he played all of them beautifully. I really love the solos he has in this one, they are impressive.

- No slack on Roger or John either. Both of their parts on this song were fun to listen to too! I loved Roger’s solo at the end!

I enjoyed this song too. It isn’t my favorite song ever, but I can enjoy it’s creativity and weirdness of lyric that only Freddie has. I’m not much of a heavy metal person, but I didn’t mind this song too much! I might listen to this album more after this reaction.

- Dang, some of this is giving me flashbacks to Lap of the Gods. I’m always down for when Queen tries to make a song sound otherworldly or alien. It’s so neat to see what these four come up with!

- Oh wow, that got pretty fast at the end! I like that speed up actually, it was pretty lit!

- Before I forget, the lyric in this song was distinct too! Freddie always seems to focus on old stories or fairytales and is able to make something original from it, which is pretty neat! I like that a lot!

I think this is my favorite song currently on the album. It’s just so weird and creative, and I love the melody and the voices that Freddie and Roger do for the fairies. Although, Liar is up next, so I could be swayed pretty quickly.

- YAS it’s the part where they go “All Day Long!” God, I don’t know why but I love that part so much. It’s catchy!

- Since I’m watching a video of it, I must say Freddie is really strutting his stuff on stage! I’m loving it! Also, they all look so pretty still. It’s probably the same performance but I want to point it out lol.

- Yay! Deaky gets a solo! And it sounds super nice! It’s always awesome seeing the bass player get a time to shine! You go dude!!

Yup, I love this song a lot! I don’t know if it beats My Fairy King, but I can say I really enjoyed the song a lot!

The Night Comes Down

Am I the only one that’s getting ominous vibes from that title? No? Well, let’s find out if my instincts are off or not.

- Oh! Never mind, it’s a Brian song! His song’s aren’t usually scary. We’re good!

- Okay, that first chord reminds me of I’m in Love With My Car and it honestly scared me for a sec lol.

- The beginning of this song almost sounds like something you’d hear on Dateline, vaguely. I wonder if it’s in a minor chord and that’s why?

- Wow, the lyrics in this are sad. “Colouring, now all I see is gray.” Damn, I knew Brian struggled with depression for a long time, but I didn’t think it really set in until his first divorce. Dang it, now I want to hug the old bastard. I hate seeing and hearing people suffer.

- I will say that I love the part where Freddie and Roger harmonize together, they sound good together in a different way from Roger and Brian’s good. I like it. I wonder if I’ll hear that more in the later albums.

- This song is mostly instrumental, which I’m fine with! Good instrumentation and melody is one of Queen’s strong points, so I’m not surprised that they focused on it a bit more in this song, especially since Liar was a little more lyric focused. It seems most of this album focused on instrumental stuff, which is cool since they were trying to find their sound and such!

Personally, I loved this song too! I love quieter songs, so listening to this was a nice breather from the other songs! Although I’m not sure I should listen to it when I’m in a down mood. Anyways, next one up is a Roger song, which means it’s probably the pure opposite of this one, yay!

Modern Times Rock n Roll

- Oh wow! This is fast, me gusta!!

- Simple beat and melody, but really smart lyrics!

- Actually, more on the lyric! I remember reading some place that Brian talked about how smart and aware Roger was of the Rock and Roll scene during the 70’s and that he knew that there was going to be a new wave coming through pretty soon. I feel like this is Roger’s way of commenting on that and that Queen was going to be part of this new wave whether anybody liked it or not. I know that his songs are usually very political and social, so it’s nice to see that he’s been doing that from the beginning!

- Oh, I love the wails that Brian’s doing on his guitar, that’s good shit!!

I haven’t really got much else to say on this ditty. It’s an interesting first song for Roger, but it so definitely defines him, at least to me anyways. Onwards to the next song!

Son and Daughter

- This song is slower, but kind of has an epic sound.

- Not a lot of chaotic things happening like in the other songs, kind of a more straight forward rock song, which I like.

- Again, the lyrics intrigue me. It seems like it’s talking about doubles standards for men, or maybe it’s talking about homosexuality or anything! I really like they are vague enough to let the listeners interpret things, because they can get their own meaning out of it.

- It’s a bit of a heavier song, but it’s not bad. It’s a got a beat and a melody. It doesn’t have that standard chaotic Queen mark but I’m not gonna judge. This is a first album, after all.

- I’m surprised there aren’t any solos in this, but at the same time I’m almost glad because it was feeling formulaic to have Brian do a solo every song (even if he is amazing).

- That speed up was super interesting! I’m sad that it didn’t lead into the next song though. I was so ready for Jesus to be the part two of this one. Oh well!

I liked this one, but it doesn’t really stick out to me in anyway. Even then, it was a good song!

Jesus

- Welp, this is definitely the most religious out of all of them!

- Dang, the song’s actually pretty tame sounding, which makes sense. They don’t want to go too crazy singing about the Lord.

- I’ve noticed something. This song kind of sounds like an old balled or hymn, which is pretty cool considering genre and subject matter. That is all.

- Freddie’s kind of scatting is honey to my ears, I love it madly.

- Same to Brian’s solo work. Even if I get annoyed with how formulaic that can be, doesn’t mean he doesn’t sound wonderful every time he plays.

- I really like the echo effect! Kind of snapped me back into attention when I heard it!

This one was also good but eh to me. The one thing that really grabbed my attention from it was that it was fairly religious, which caught me off guard a little. Queen’s covered a lot in their music, so it shouldn’t surprise me, but I’m surprised that they sang this much about Christianity and such in this early album. More on that later, last song!

Seven Seas of Rhye (Instrumental)

- Wow, that’s all I got to say! I forgot that this was the song with the cool piano part in it, so I’m hyped for when I get to listen to it all the way through! A good decision on their part to leave that in there, a good tease for their next album!

Overall: I liked this album! I’ll admit, I was spoiled most likely when I listened to A Night at the Opera, but I still enjoyed this one! It was really cool to see the band’s beginnings post-Smile, and seeing them get their hands dirty with composing music. I was surprised at the religious undertones of the album, but didn’t mind it. It let them mess around creatively with some things, like getting influences from old ballads or hymns in Jesus. It was neat to see that they were doing stuff like the voice overlaying and solos from the beginning and I’m honestly proud of them for sticking with that to the point of perfection. I’m definitely returning to this album for Liar and My Fairy King, those two are my favorites easily from this album, besides The Night Comes Down, of course.
