Journal Entry 3 - August 2022

So much has happened in the last month. We are almost ready to bring in the new citizens.

I have learned that one of the founding families has been murdered. I am not sure why or how, but the fifth seat of the Town Council is no longer a Bowman.

Instead, that strange man was back.

I am terrible with names -- caring for souls long enough to remember names means caring enough to watch them be sacrificed. I would just rather be the inspiring catalyst. But this new stranger wants to try something new, he says.

A new way of running the ritual. A new way that keeps the creature happier longer, that may help keep the real town safer for longer.

And by default, the world.

But still, it is nice to have a friend and partner in creating this town. Unfortunately, he doesn't know that he is contracted to the creature the same way all the souls coming in are.

I can't tell him that, of course. It's forbidden.

Midway through July, we settled into this man's office to look over applications. He had a goal in mind, a type of citizenship we should keep in Reddington 11. Normally we contract with [Redacted] to get the citizens shipped in, but my new friend swore hand picking the citizens was a better idea.

I was hesitant, but his mood was infectious. After hours and days of reading applications, I was starting to enjoy this man's company.

We found the 1,000 souls to take, and agreed to the tests we would conduct to see if they would survive the town. He wanted to test their abilities. See what people would do if you put them in an impossible situation that requires team work to get out.

"Teamwork. Friendship. These are the things that will make it better this time. It won't just be a murderous game," he said, putting his hand on mine and squeezing to reassure me. "We convince them that they want to save the town, that it's important to save the town. And we will focus on keeping the creature at bay longer while keeping everyone alive. This will work."

It was a confusing thing to tell me. Was the end goal not death? Was the end goal not to feed the creature? Why keep people longer, why torture them so?

But his eyes are so kind, I cannot help but trust him.

Does he know what happened in Reddington 2-10?

I left after our last meeting to start building the town. That's my job, in the end. Hold everything together, keep the veil of the real town and the alternative one up and running. Keep those not set to die safe. And to protect those citizens in the real town.

My friend set off to build up our citizens' first tests.

May they pass with flying colors.

May the Gods have mercy on their souls.

I know it’s early days but I genuinely think the hardwon thing was so well done. On paper it sounds kinda cheap to be resorting to your old pc and it might bring up a whole host of concerns but I think it speaks to how good murphs been with balancing c1 drops as like fanservicey things and actual relevant stuff to the world and is definitely emblematic of the core message of naddpod which has always been “the story doesn’t just end after the big battle”. I think the hardwon thing does a good job of keeping him relevant while still interesting, and reminiscent of c1 hardwon while being a distinct character for this campaign. I don’t think who he’s become backpedal’s on development we saw from him but just goes to show that people don’t stay the same. Idk, naddpod good man

#Haven’t listened to the short rest yet #But like god it was so well #Well done #and I think the reason it was so good is because Jake didn’t have to juggle two characters #And also we know he’s here to stay #There’s room for him to be silly and sad and lame because we know we have time with him #So many times in actual play characters will come back and players will have to contend with being two people #And saying everything they need to say in one recording #And I think it’s a real grace to hardwon that that’s not the case #Naddpod #not another dnd podcast

Not to like say “everyone should listen to naddpod” again, but everyone should listen to naddpod. I know it’s a more rules based dnd podcast with combat in honestly probably every episode, and that’s not some people’s thing, but it just doesn’t drag at all because 1) as I’ve said Brian Murphy is an encounter design god and 2) the players clearly love the game and are having so much fun throughout and it’s just such a joy to listen to and it just helps me fall in love with it all over again. For me, it has the perfect mix of knowing they’re an entertainment podcast and what that means in terms of pacing and in character decision making, while it still being clear that these people aren’t just doing this because it’s a hole they dug themselves into, but because it’s a genuinely enjoyable thing for them
