Rusties:

Within the societal structure of Robot City, there exists a social class referred to as Outmodes. Outmodes are robots whose parts are no longer being manufactured and, due to their economic status, cannot afford to purchase the newer, upgraded ones on the market. The fate of all outmodes is to be sweeped up, smelted down, and repurposed, when their old, broken bodies eventually fall apart. The Rusties are a ragtag group of outmodes living out of a boarding house. With the assistance of Rodney’s inventive prowess, they begin repairing other outmodes themselves. The film culminates in them fighting/defeating the evil robots responsible for the despicable treatment of outmodes.

Protectors of Spiral City:

A group of superheroes that once defended the sprawling metropolis of Spiral City. By killing the Anti-God, a malevolent cosmic being that threatened to destroy all of existence, they unwittingly upset the cosmic balance between good and evil. In order to prevent the universe from correcting itself and resurrecting the Anti-God, Spiral City’s heroes were forced to permanently exile themselves to another dimension. They now reside on a farm within the town of Rockwood, a timeless pocket dimension of sorts, where they attempt to pass themselves off as a (rather dysfunctional) family.

thinking about the lipschitz family now.

(this isn’t including a trans richie. not because i don’t love that headcannon, but bc i forgot about it until i was halfway in)

- eloise and david started dating when they were 15

- they both were planning on leaving hatchetfield for college but staying together, until eloise got pregnant. with twins.

- so neither of them went to college, and they moved in with david’s parents, since he was an only child and she had two little brothers. (one of whom is paul matthews but don’t worry about that)

- they find out that they’re having twins and they are going crazy. david gets a few part time jobs to pay for all the shit, like her hospital bills, baby clothes, shit like that.

- she gives birth to trevor, and several hours later, richie. the two are identical twins.

- over the next three years, things are hard for them, as the boys grow up and the two work a lot.

- richie and trevor spend a lot of those with their grandparents and uncles, because eloise and david are constantly working.

- especially bc they were born in 2003 and so an economic crisis is almost here! so the little family lives with their grandparents for a long time.

- when he’s 5, richie gets an ear infection that leaves him partially deaf. they all learn sign language and make sure ur doesn’t progress, but they don’t have the money to get him a hearing aid or anything the like.

- at 6, trevor has so many friends. he has play dates all the time, and richie goes with him, but richie doesn’t really have friends. he has a hard time talking to the other kids, prefers to play by himself of with his hands.

- richie gets an autism diagnosis at 7, and they decide to ask trevor some question too. he does not have autism, which can happen for identical twins, i looked it up.

- when he’s 8, richie makes his first friend. peter spankoffski, who becomes a permanent very quickly. richie spends a lot of time at peter’s house, or his older brother’s apartment, and peter spends a lot of time at their house. trevor plays with them, but usually doesn’t want to go with richie to peters.

- eloise and david get married when the boys are 9, when they realize ‘oh yeah, we never did that. maybe we should!’ it’s a very small thing, since they don’t have that much money, but all of their families are invited, and they have an excellent time. richie and trevor are the ring bearers.

- trevor joins the school play when he’s 10, and absolutely loves it. he has trouble with his lines, but he makes a great abraham lincoln, and he’s cute enough that no one in the audience cares if he screws up the gettysburg address. he wants to do more of it now.

- richie starts watching obs ute tv shows and loving them. he becomes obsessed with anime and japanese culture.

- the two both have overactive sweat glands, but trevor wears a shit ton of axe body spray to hide it. richie says it hurts his nose. the two fight across the dinner table about it.

- the thing is, richie and trevor are very very different. trevor is an outgoing theatre kid and richie is a nerdy weeb, but they are brothers and the love each other a lot even when they pretend not to.

- they share a room for most of their life, up until they’re 13, when they finally move out of their grandparents house. they get a house for the four of them, which is two doors down from the flemming house. ruth and richie quickly become good friends. ruth and peter are apparently in the same dance group, so it’s all fun and friendship.

- they reach high school and go their separate ways, socially. trevor will talk to richie in the hall ways, but he’s a theatre kid and has theatre friends, and richie’s a nerd. ruth’s a theatre kid too, but she thinks trevor is fucking annoying, so she prefers to hang out with richie.

- when the boys are 14, they get a little sister. piper lipschitz. richie is a big protector of her, and swears to look out for her. trevor thinks she’s fun to play with, and messes around with her a lot as she grows up.

- at 17, richie starts dating travis coulson, a friend who goes to sycamore and works at the cineplex. they have a very akward family dinner and trevor makes fun of them a lot.

- at 18, trevor goes to sweden on exchange and comes back with a boyfriend. rudolph comes to america in exchange right after, and they go to homecoming together. they have an akward family dinner with lots of language barriers, since trevor only knows half swedish and rudolph only knows half english. it works well for the two of them, but with the whole family it’s kind of a mes. richie laughs mercilessly at them.

-when the boys graduate, richie is going to film school in boston and trevor is going to theatre school in ny. they hug very hard before they have to go.

Fire and Hemlock Readalong: Day 25 (Part 4, Ch. 6)

...in which Polly walks away.

This final chapter does NOT mess around. DWJ layers on motifs and symbols galore, all resonating with the themes and imagery that we've already seen throughout the novel and pointing to the grand finale. Buckle in, because this is a long ride to Nowhere.

Immediately, Polly reattaches herself to Tom, determined no longer to cede to the embarrassment of clinging to him because she's learnt that lesson already. He pretends not to notice her and attempts to shake her off, but the arrival of Mr. Piper forestalls any need for clarification (Tom Lynn knows Mr. Piper, though their connection isn't immediately stated). It isn't until Polly has crashed the train ride--much as she first crashed the funeral--that she demands to be recognized. Of course, Ann Abraham--Tan Audel, whose gift is memory--comes the closest to admitting remembrance.

Polly and Tom's reunion is one of the most painfully joyous connections in all of literature. I personally adore their bond and the raw way that DWJ portrays it--the irrepressible happiness, the careful way Tom admits he remembers her, the way that all their important moments are recalled and woven back through their conversation. The panto, Sports Day, the first funeral, sentimental drivel, the books Tom sent Polly. The allusions are quick and brief and somewhat hard to follow--but we do get a picture of what had been going between them and the way Laurel's magic works.

But they also clarify their own feelings to each other, or at least attempt to: they apologize for their mutual bad behavior and argue through the way their abilities to speak things into truth have more or less molded each other and the way that the curse affects them. It's an interesting power play, because although Laurel is so much stronger than them, we can see the loopholes they have been making for each other, leading up to their kiss at the gates of Hunsdon House.

There is a moment, several pages earlier, that in some ways foreshadows it:

A hand-like leaf fell on the case of the cello, and slid off again. Polly shuddered.

It's one of those hyper-specific DWJ details that both paints a scene and invokes a mood, and I have always seen this as a metaphor. DWJ has already used Tom's hands as a representative physical attribute and music is another one of his strengths that he draws upon, like Polly is. Polly's "shudder" at the touch also feels indicative of a transfer of affect. But it's also an illustration of how Polly has held on and then let go, and the falling leaf represents a loss of a day of good luck, echoing Granny's superstition from the second chapter. Again, DWJ is eliding the signifiers for her heroes.

Once they cross into the Nowhere Hunsdon House, they once again find themselves in the type of artificially polite social scenario Laurel is so fond of, where Leslie, Seb, and Mr. Leroy await them. We finally get some truths out of Seb, at last: that if Laurel doesn't use Tom, he'll be used instead; that he worked for them out of desperation to save his own life; that he used Polly as much as Tom did, with perhaps even less genuine affection (and certainly no remorse over the fact). Leslie is absolutely being lined up as Tom's replacement, a blind sacrificial lamb that *might* still have been saved if someone did something about it. But I think he's meant to show the easy way a young and vulnerable person can fall into a situation like this: through neglect. Because Leslie has been neglected just as much as Tom or Polly, by Charles Lynn: the real identity of Tom Piper.

In his final iteration of Tom Lynn's shadow self, he is shown to have given up Tom to Laurel, and he will now lose Leslie as a result of that cold-heartedness. We learn this was how Laurel got Tom--through Charles--and also somehow through the Fire and Hemlock picture, which (along with the lock of his hair) seems tied to his soul, now in Polly's keeping.

But the final struggle for Tom's life must happen, even though Seb stands in line to take Mr. Leroy's place and Leslie stands in line to take Tom's (DWJ never abandons her symmetry, even here). Polly realizes that the only way she can force Tom to win is to leave him completely alone, so that Mr. Leroy will also be alone--more symmetry. The quartet summon the horse, but she must take action before it arrives. The way DWJ describes her decision to basically reject everything--everything Tom gave her, everything she made of herself because of their friendship--is beautiful. Absolutely stunning, one of my favorite passages in the entire novel:

She came to Mr Leroy. He was leaning on his stick watching Tom sarcastically over his shoulder. He broke into his loud, fatal laugh as he saw Polly. But the laugh stopped as she walked past him into the miasmic ripples, and he looked at her uneasily. Polly kept her eyes on the greyed, uncertain shape of Tom below. He was definitely below now, in the wrong perspective of that current, deep beneath her. Around her, everything became grey-green ripples, but she did not feel the ripples, or anything else particularly. She had meant to harden her mind and be as stony as Ivy, but she seemed stony already. Kind feeling seemed to bleed away from her as she went downwards. Love, companionship, even Nowhere meant less and less. All she felt was a numb kind of sadness. The truth between two people always cuts two ways, she thought. And she had to go on.

The line I bolded always seems to me to have the heart of the novel, even though I'm never quite sure what it means--unless it means it's always half a lie. Which is an extremely raw message to convey in a story built on storytelling as the realest thing in life.

Polly rejects Tom, utterly. It's the most clear-eyed conclusion of the entire novel, built on her experiences of Nowhere and also the rest of the world. She rejects him because she knows that's the only way for him to win according to Laurel's rules--but it's also for having used her, for having shaped her childhood into this past baggage she has to hold onto, for taking her for granted. I know DWJ intended her "I've got a career to come, too" as a feminist stake in no longer being defined by her relationship to a man--but it's also Polly choosing to focus on herself in the future, as though her past no longer matters.

This part always hurt me when I read it, and it still does. But I think the older I get, the more I understand it. The more doing the painful things feel meaningful and the less that you can have your cake and eat it too. It's such an incredibly mature message to tack on at the end of a children's book, and I still can't believe, sometimes, that DWJ managed to get away with it.

What Is Crooked Cannot Be Straightened

When I started going to therapy for religious trauma, my therapist directed me to Abraham Piper, a rather famous exvangelical and son of John Piper, a famous evangelical fundamentalist. Abraham Piper's TikTok account was interesting, philosophical, and entertaining all at the same time, and many of his ideas hit home with me, as someone who was floundering with the idea of religious trauma, despite it having been nearly 8 years after my Exit. 

One of the tags he used was #abusurdism which I'd never heard of before, and being a curious type of person, I googled it. 

"What is absurdism?"

Of course, as you might expect, I found dozens of articles and reddit threads discussing Albert Camus, existentialism, and meaninglessness.

I was hooked. 

Meaninglessness had been an appealing concept to me since the first time I read Ecclesiastes, the only book of the bible I ever really liked. 

Even now, if you asked me what my favorite book of the bible was, I'd still say Ecclesiastes. When I was young, my reason was that it was beautiful poetry written by a clearly intelligent person who understood the futility of life, and which ended by directing you to trust god. 

Now my reason is because Ecclesiastes breaks christianity. It's like a computer virus. As soon as you run ecclesiastes.exe, blue screen.

In Ecclesiastes, the writer concludes that everything is meaningless, therefore, your best bet is to fear god and follow his commandments (cough *philosophical suicide* cough). The ending offers an easy "skip" button. 

"Fear god!" christian you might think. "Great, that's all I need to know. I was gonna do that anyway."

This answer is good enough until you read that verse in Romans about how you're supposed to study the scriptures. And then you do study them.

As soon as you really begin to look deeply into Ecclesiastes, one key thing leaps out: if everything is meaningless... so is following god and his commandments. That solution the Teacher offers? Just as meaningless as any other solution.

All of christianity centers around one foundational element: the meaning of everything is god.

But if there is no meaning to everything, if god is not the meaning after all... what does that mean for the entirety of the christian religion? 

If you take Ecclesiastes literally, then making the choice to "obey god" is just as meaningless as making a different choice. Even if you choose to "follow god," the method for doing so is meaningless. You could choose to follow the old testament god or the new testament god, you could follow Thor or Allah, you could rename the universe "god" and call it a day—and you get to make up your own "rules" about what following god looks like, and at least philosophically speaking, you're good to go.

Most christians would argue that therefore you must follow the christian scripture, because obviously the bible doesn't contradict itself, because it says so. heh

But this doesn't work. Literally no one follows the scriptures literally. Not even literalists. Because it's impossible. Because the bible doesn't agree with itself about anything.

And even if you find ways to look past all the other contradictions, Ecclesiastes undermines everything else. It puts questions where They don't want questions. It adds flexibility where They don't want flexibility. It adds meaninglessness where They want meaning.

And They can't get rid of Ecclesiastes. Because if They do that, then they're picking and choosing what scripture to follow. And if you can cut and paste Ecclesiastes, then it follows you can cut and paste the rest of the bible, in which case you might as well just throw the whole thing in the trash and start over. 

As far as I can tell, the "best" argument against my interpretation of Ecclesiastes is "no, you're misinterpreting it" which... isn't an argument. The very fact that Ecclesiastes demands interpretation in order to "fit" with the rest of christianity, means that I can interpret it however the hell I want.

And I choose to interpret it as an exploration of the meaninglessness of everything that ultimately undermines the whole of christianity.

When faced with ultimate meaninglessness, some people choose to avail themselves of the pleasures of life. Some people choose to work. Some people choose to find meaning in the mundane. Some people create their own meaning. Some people (like Solomon) choose to follow god and obey the king. And some people simply... accept meaninglessness.

And this is the heart of absurdism: choosing to accept meaninglessness as a fact of life, rather than fighting against it, trying to fix it, or trying to solve it.

Everything is meaningless. Utterly meaningless.

Including Ecclesiastes.

Everything is meaningless and that’s okay. Not only is it okay, it's good. Because acceptance often brings peace, freedom, and joy where there was only cognitive dissonance before.

You ever wonder how like, even the moral companions never question Sole going out of their way to slaughter literally any and all hostiles? Even if there's like, zero need to? Like "Oh hey a raider outpost that I can only see through a long distance scope let's go fucking kill them." Like what happens when they finally realize Sole just has this massive bloodlust and realize that the commonwealth is actually noticeably starting to run out of hostiles because of it? Like do they just not get worried?

This is actual a tough question ya’know but I think it’s also a great question too, thank you Anon!

I believe that Sole’s bloodlust would start to bother most of the moral companions but Soles only attacking those who ‘deserve’ it, Raiders, Gunners, Rust Devils, and the like. But even then, Sole is now playing the Judge, Jury, and executioner.

It would worry people like Piper, Nick, Danse, and Preston cause what happened once the commonwealth runs of hostiles? Who’s next on the chopping block?

Obviously Sole is going to fairly popular amongst the settlers for taking out the ones of constantly threaten thier life’s but lots of the people had family members in those groups, sure they may not ‘love’ them as much but they were still at one point family.

Take the Finch Farm for example, sure Abraham is mad that his son left and all but if you return saying that you kill Jake, he’s obviously troubled and sadden by this news.

Also the Gunners, they tend to force people into their faction whether or not they like it. I’m sure countless of them are just trying to live while being stuck in the gunners but then Sole comes along and bam, dead.

Countless people will start to hate Sole for their actions, start to set bounty’s upon their head and now the companions are in a predicament.

Innocent people(maybe a few bounty hunters too) who want revenge for their love one are now hunting down Sole. It goes against their morals to kill innocent people but what now if they even tag along with Sole, their head is on that chopping block too.

Now their own morals are being challenged by the actions of the one they travel with but instead of wanting to drop them and their factions(Danse & Preston) are being dragged three the mud. I can see most of them confronting Sole about their blood lust.

It would be a build up of events, obviously if Sole and Preston are doing MM quest, then he’s not gonna say anything then but if it’s just Sole going on a killing spree just to have one? Then yeah he’ll voice his concern.

Same thing with the BoS, if Sole is doing Rhys’ radiant quest then Danse has no problem with this, but he’s already stated that if a conflict can be over with via diplomacy, then that’s his preferred option. If Sole is constantly charging in battles, guns ‘n blazing, then Danse would start to voice his problems.

Deacon would have some wise words of wisdom to say here and there when killing the scum of the commonwealth.

Nick & Piper & Hancock- I believe that they are under the pretense of that most of them deserved it but, as stated before, Sole will start to play Judge, Jury, and executioner. At some point all three will become uncomfortable with it, Nick and Hancock would upfront about his concerns and Piper would pass snide remarks and passive aggressive comments saying like “you really think they deserve that?” Or “guessing there won’t be any witness this trial.”

X6 and Cait and MacCready, I’m don’t think the two really care that much. X6 would be glad that Soles doing a lot of the dirty work and Cait & MacCready, I don’t think either really gives a damn.

Cuire would be the be once who would be most conflicted. Sole is bettering the world, yes but at what cost? All the blood on her hands, the gallons upon gallons of blood that she carry’s around with her. Not to mention that she was only recently freed and introduced into a world that she never got to experience before the war. She refers to the pre-war police when getting into an altercation but there are no police, there are no laws or justice and yet, Sole is taking it upon themselves to do such. 

To answer your question Anon, yes I think most of the companions would get increasingly worried about Soles bloodlust and I’d like to think that after enough blood has been shed for no reason other then “fuck it.” They’ll confront Sole and express their concern. This can be a damper upon Soles relationship with them and I can see the companions turning upon sole when they truly cross the line. (Things like using violence rather then words, killing just to kill, hell even harming a innocent simple cause the companion is so worried about Soles bloodlust)
