Meeting and Dating Andy Cavenaugh
Tumblr media
(My shitty gif)(Requested by anonymous)
- Living in the middle of the desert was an interesting experience. You’d lived in the same home since you were born and yet there were still occupants of your town that you’d never seen or met; even though there was only a meager population of under 50.
- It was the sheer size of your state that did it. Everyone lived miles away from each other and any shop that was considered to be “nearby” was still at least a thirty minute drive so you only ever went into town a couple times a month. Which is how you met Andy.
- You’d driven into town with a list of supplies you’d needed and a wallet full of that months savings, ready to get your stuff and go as quickly as you could; hoping to get home before the sun rose all the way and baked you alive.
- Coincidentally, Andy was in town at the same time, loitering around the store you were attempting to shop at. You paid him no mind and went about your business until you were ready to check out.
- Once the shopkeep had rung you up, you found that you didn’t have enough money for all the things on your list and reluctantly told the man to keep something as he helped you pack up what you could afford.
- Andy watched the entire interaction from somewhere behind you as he pocketed whatever he felt like. Once you headed towards the doors of the building, he picked some cheap thing off the shelf and went to the checkout, watching you as you packed up your car.
- While the store clerk was preoccupied with the cash register, the boy snuck whatever you’d left behind into his jacket and waited another few moments for the man to hand him his actual purchase before he made his way outside.
- You were just about to get into your car when he came up to you, greeting you casually before he held out his hand and offered you the thing that you’d left behind. You looked at him in surprise before you thanked him and took it, shifting it to your other hand so that you could offer him yours in a handshake.
- The two of you introduced yourselves and he asked if you’d be interested in going out sometime. Since all you knew about him was that he was attractive and sweet enough to “buy” you the thing you couldn’t afford, you agreed and wrote down your number for him, telling him that it was nice meeting him and saying goodbye before you drove off.
- He calls you a couple days later while out with his friends, a little liquid courage in his system and a bit of peer pressure from his buddies leading to his wonderful decision making.
- You’re clueless and he thinks his friends will stick to their word of “heading out before you show”, which obviously doesn’t happen. You arrive and they’re still there, almost immediately inviting themselves to what was supposed to be your first date and making the night rather uncomfortable at times.
- You can tell that your date is just as uncomfortable as you, but that doesn’t exactly make things any better. By the time the night ends, you’ve already decided that you’re probably just gonna count your losses and find a potential boyfriend elsewhere.
- But fate seems to be on Andy’s side because the two of you find yourselves face to face a few days later. He gives you an apology, explaining everything before telling you that he’d like to see you again.
- It takes you a minute to decide but you finally agree and tell him that you’ll give it another shot, bringing up your own idea for a date in hopes that you won’t be bothered by his buddies again. He gives you a wide smile, asking when he should pick you up and thanking you genuinely just before he leaves.
- So, for your second date; though you like to consider it your first, the two of you go to whichever place you chose and wind up having a really nice time. He seems to be on his best behavior but his real personality shines through as well; and it’s one that you really enjoy.
- You probably give him a kiss on the cheek as a goodnight but the two of you share your first real kiss on your next date. You’d spent pretty much the entire night together and wound up parking off on the side of the road to stargaze for a while.
- You were leaning against the hood of his car with him, looking up at the sky before your gaze shifted to the man beside you. He was preoccupied with watching the stars, leaving you to let your mind wander.
“I’m glad we gave this another shot.” You said and watched as his focus shifted to you instead.
- He gave you a smile and told you that he was too before he leaned down and pressed his lips to yours.
- Congratulations, you caught yourself a firebird in the middle of the desert.
- Andy really doesn’t give a shit about how other people feel like 80% of the time, and he’s just a fan of affection in general, so there’s going to be a lot of Pda in your relationship; if you’ll allow it.
- Handholding. He likes keeping you close to him and making sure that you aren’t getting into any dangerous trouble; especially if you’re around his friends. Although he does wear his gloves a lot so; even though he gives you the occasional reassuring squeeze or strokes his thumb across your knuckles, you’ll most likely be feeling leather more than his skin.
- If someone’s kissing a face, it’s you. His lips are for your lips only, he doesn’t bother touching them to anything else; though he does enjoy when you kiss him on the cheek or jaw.
- Deep, slow kisses.
- He calls you honey or baby more than he calls you by your name. And as tough as he likes to pretend he is, he’d love to have you call him by pet names too.
- Cuddling is one of his favorite pastimes; he absolutely loves it. Most of the time, he’ll pull you in, pressing his cheek/jaw to your head and letting you lay right up against him, your head resting against his shoulder or in the crook of his neck.
- A lot of the time, he prefers to be loving in a more reserved way. He tends to show that he cares through his actions and by doing little things to make your life easier. Things like waking up early to put gas in your car or picking up things that you need from the store whenever he’s in town so that you don’t have to go.
- Sometimes, he’ll set up a sentence like he’s about to say something really sweet or you’ll ask him something expecting a cute response and he’ll just say something crude or lewd instead.
“How do I look.” He turns and looks at you, a smile gracing his face.
“Your tits look great.” He replies, barely holding in his laughter.
- He indulges you more than he cares to admit. He might occasionally act like he’s too cool but he’s too in love with you to say no and potentially make you sad.
- Tv dates. There ain’t shit else to do.
- Cruising around in his firebird; and sometimes parking somewhere to makeout.
- Going on road trips or long outings. There isn’t a whole lot to do in your town so you’ll occasionally take the long ride over to the next town in hopes of finding something fun.
- He’ll never tell you that he does but he always dodges potholes and bumpy areas during these trips so that he doesn’t wake you up while he’s driving.
- Driving out to the middle of the desert with a bundle of blankets to watch the sunrise; or stopping on the side of the road during one of your trips.
- Sitting with him while he works on his car.
- Going out into the desert to shoot or smash random junk. Vases, porcelain, tin cans; stuff like that.
- Playing pinball and other convenience store arcade games.
- Every now and again, he’ll get some money from his pops and take you out to a nice dinner; especially if it’s after the two of you are pushed into doing something you dont like and he can see that you’re upset. It’s usually because of Sam but he still feels the need to try and make it up to you and make sure that you aren’t gonna ghost him.
“Hey, why don’t we go and get some dinner,” he’ll say, a hint of nervous desperation in his voice as you walk out to his car. “You can get whatever you want. Dessert too.”
- It isn’t clear exactly how rich Andy actually is but it seems like he’s sort of embarrassed to have wealth in such a poor town. Because of this, I feel like he probably wouldn’t mention it and would try to dodge questions that would lead to him exposing the truth, maybe acting like he’s less wealthy than he is until Sam “outs” him and causes an awkward situation.
- Him stealing things for you. You’d much prefer if he just bought them but at least he doesn’t tell you whether or not he’s stolen it most of the time.
- Likes to fool around a lot; he’s rarely ever fully serious and he’s always trying to make you laugh.
- Can quote just about any western film you can name and does impressions of all the characters. He grew up on those sorts of things so he’s practically an expert by now.
- He likes messing with your stuff: putting on your clothes, using your mirror for random stuff, picking things up off your dresser and toying around with them, etc.
- My god, the change of character he has when he’s with his friends and you, compared to when he’s with his parents gives you whiplash. It’s hilarious seeing him lie and act like an angel during family dinners.
- His dad probably lectures him about manners whenever you’re with them: things like putting his elbows on the table, saying grace, how he treats you, etc. Its pretty amusing to see.
- He seems like a good guy who got mixed in with the wrong people. Sure, he enjoys a little chaos and trouble making like the rest of them but he doesn't like hurting people and you can tell from the way he acts afterward that he isn't proud; especially when you give him a look in the middle of the situation and sober him up.
- You’re dragged along with him and the boys a lot; or he’s forced to ditch you to hang out with them whenever Sam calls.
- Sam flirting with you. You know damn well that he’d make you compliment him or get you to agree with his praise of himself; and Andy would be miffed but unable to do anything besides listen to him while his knuckles whiten on his steering wheel.
- There aren’t a lot of people in your town for him to get jealous of but whenever there is, he does. Most of the time, it’s Sam or some flirtatious traveler but other times it’s your celebrity crushes or old boyfriends. He usually just bites his tongue or makes some kind of sarcastic, passive aggressive comment; it depends on who it is and how you’re reacting to them.
- He’s always looking over at you and making sure you’re alright whenever he can; especially when you’re out with his friends. He knows that getting into the trouble that they do can be dangerous and he doesn’t want anything happening to you just because Sam doesn’t know when to stop.
- The two of you get into a lot of arguments but they’re rarely ever serious. You mostly just bicker before the two of you give up and decide that it’s a pointless fight.
- Whenever you do have an argument, one that he causes and upsets you with, he always feels guilty and finds himself unable to stay mad at you. He might not verbally apologize but he will try to make it up to you in some way and tell you that he’s sorry.
- He’s not big on saying he loves you but he does say it on occasion; and definitely shows it more than he says it.
- The two of you probably get engaged on a whim a bit too early into your relationship but he’s promising to take you out of that desert city and along with him to Hollywood so the ring is a nice symbol of that oath.

Discography Discussion: Wolf & Sheep
While Wolf & Sheep is my favorite album, I think it’s also the most recognizable one in H.O.T’s discography. No other album they’ve done has as many well-known tracks. In this discussion, we’ll be diving into the most teenage-geared album in the history of H.O.T.
The Wolf & Sheep Album
Tumblr media
H.O.T’s second album Wolf & Sheep came out on July 5th, 1997. It’s the only album (besides the OST for Age of Peace) to be released outside of September - which also makes it the shortest time between albums. It’s also the only album besides Outside Castle that features the members on the cover. In case you’re trying to figure out who is who, I assume (from their features that are usually depicted in artwork of them) it’s the order they generally are in when they’re on stage (facing the audience from the stage), meaning from left to right it’s Woohyuk, Kangta, Tony, Heejun, and Jaewon. Compared to We Hate All Kinds of Violence, this album is bolder in its statements and was a continuation of their ability to criticize and uplift their young target audience.
Wolf & Sheep
youtube
“Wolf & Sheep” is the title track for this album, and was their first attempt at targeting society - not just their teenage fans. Like other hard-hitting tracks in H.O.T’s discography, this one was composed by Yoo Youngjin.
Lyrics
It’s an aggressive song with lyrics about wolves attacking and taking sheep. The song is mostly metaphorical, and about people with power taking advantage of people without it. However, that’s only a surface-level understanding of the song. Usually, Yoo Youngjin usually writes about topics (and problems) that are prevalent across multiple societies and time periods, but sometimes he does write about particular events. “Wolf and Sheep” is about an event in the future that has already happened, but didn’t actually happen. The song starts with Woohyuk announcing, “The year 2000, June 28, they who had been foretold arrived.” This song was released in 1997, which was three years before that date. But it’s written in the past tense - in both Korean and in the English translation of it. However, when I looked up the date itself (June 28th, 2000) and ones similar to it, I didn’t find anything that matched or were of significance.
The closest thing I could come up with happened on June 28th, 1950.  (Source) During the Korean War, there was a massacre on that day at the Seoul National University Hospital by the North Korean army. (Source) Here are some lyrics that could support this: “All the sheep’s family were turned into the hunted..the sheep’s cities were turned into battlefields...50 years of peace was broken on that day, and everything was destroyed in their hands...What sin did I commit to deserve all this pain?” (Lyric Source)
To add to this, I found a blog on Daum that supports my theory. This blog also adds that the album was announced on June 28th, 1997, but its release was delayed because Heejun hurt his shoulder. Considering that this is the most research I’ve had to do for any H.O.T track, it’s nice to see someone else support this theory.
Music Video
The music video for “Wolf & Sheep“ is the first H.O.T MV to be filmed outside of Korea. It features the members riding around in LA with cuts to them performing the track on stage. I know it’s not a big deal, but my personal favorite part is at the end when they’re running down the beach and someone does a flip and knocks into the camera. There is an alternate version of the music video that’s basically the same, just edited together differently.
Another point of interest
Interestingly, the track and the MV are both echoed later in “I-Yah”. While “Wolf & Sheep” was about destruction and loss of life for an event that might not have existed, “I-Yah” was about a specific event that included destruction and innocents who lost their lives.
Both tracks have the members wearing outfits that are supposed to look intimidating.
Tumblr media
Both songs are arranged similarly, and have a point where Kangta wears a white and sings solo while the aggressive music momentarily becomes calm before he crescendos it back to anger.
Tumblr media
Also, both are their only two MVs (from their main album discography) filmed outside of Korea. They were filmed in the U.S., but on opposite sides of the country, with “Wolf & Sheep” filmed in L.A. (the west coast), while “I-Yah” was filmed in New York City (the east coast). Which I find interesting, as both are clearly about events in Korea, yet filmed abroad.
(If you want to know more about “I-Yah”, I did a Discography Discussion about it)
Final Thoughts
While this track was quite ambitious for the group, promotions for it didn’t last long as it was quickly banned for the use of profanity. (In all fairness, there is a lot of it.) However, that was not the end for this album.
If you pay attention to their discography, you’ll notice a pattern. Usually when they release an album, they will show the hard-hitting title track first that is about a serious issue (such as “Warrior’s Descendant”). Usually the track will do well and set the tone for the rest of the album. Then, the next track will be a happy/inoffensive track (such as “Candy”) and will get a lot of love from the public - which was especially useful when a title track got banned. This pattern is why they’re able to get away with having an (at times) violent and profanity-heavy discography while still being considered to be family-friendly.
After H.O.T debuted, there were quite a few groups who claimed to be like H.O.T at the time of their debut, but when their first hard-hitting song didn’t get as much praise as “Warrior’s Descendant”, their follow up track would be something light. These artists would then stick to singing inoffensive songs for most of their discography. Perhaps if companies (including SM) didn’t panic and drop to making groups strictly as pop groups reminiscent of the music industry before Seo Taiji & Boys, the K-Pop industry as we know it today would have been very different. Even to this day, there isn’t a K-pop group that has reached the heights H.O.T did with as high of a percentage of critique songs for their title tracks (let alone the rest of their discography) - the closest being B.A.P, to my knowledge.
In my opinion, this pattern is most visible with the Wolf & Sheep album due to the track they released after “Wolf & Sheep”.
Full of Happiness
youtube
The next song to be released on the album was “행복”. The literal translation is “Happiness”, but sometimes you will see this song being called “Full of Happiness” because that’s the feeling this song gives. They lyrics are about meeting someone who was very kind in the past, and hoping the meeting will go well. This song takes the feeling of happiness that was given to someone, then giving it back as strongly as (or stronger than) they received it. However, the music video was about a tennis player feeling happiness winning a match after not being able to do so at the beginning.
There are a lot of adorable details in this music video.
1. Woohyuk and Tony play fighting until the other members have to hold them back.
Tumblr media
2. The other members stealing a table umbrella to shade Jaewon. My favorite part is watching them sneak around Jaewon’s back. Considering that it was a really hot day, I think that’s such a sweet gesture.
Tumblr media
3. Heejun and Kangta play fighting.
Tumblr media
4. Heejun smacking Kangta with a tennis ball, then fleeing while hanging onto his hat.
Tumblr media
5. When the tennis player wins, H.O.T are in the crowd and celebrate.
Tumblr media
With this in mind, I would like to remind everyone that this was the track media used when Jaewon was discharged from the military and all of the members reunited to call themselves H.O.T for the first time since disbandment.
Go! H.O.T.!
The first track on the Wolf & Sheep album is “Go! H.O.T.!” It’s a hype song about the group that lists each member and something about them.
Sexy Guy is a Kangta (Hey - Handsome!)
Wit Guy is a Heejun (Shinning Shinning!)
Mood Guy is a Tony (Hey - Funny!)
Wild Guy is a Woohyuk
Maknae Jaewon is a Shy Shy ! Guy Guy!
If you watch any live performance of “Haengbok”, you’ll see a part of this song sandwiched in the middle with the camera focusing on each of the members. Each performance is different, such as in one Jaewon does a flip and in another he pulls a comb out of nowhere and runs it through his hair.
youtube
H.O.T’s Haengbok vs Super Junior’s Haengbok
SMTown used to release an album during the winter and summer seasons that brought together a lot of their popular artists. These albums would usually have one main song that everyone sang, then the rest of the tracks would be either split by group or just put different people together. On the summer 2007 album, Super Junior did a cover of “Haengbok”.
youtube
When I first heard it, I adored it because I thought it was a fun, new take on a song I loved. Well, everyone seems to agree with that notion because when someone does a cover of “Haengbok”, they’ll usually do the Super Junior version, not H.O.T’s (even though it will often be labeled as a cover of an H.O.T song or say Suju cover, original by H.O.T). The two songs use different instrumentals, choreography, and even how the song is sung is different when you compare Tony and Woohyuk’s parts to the Super Junior version.
I assume the reason for this is that it’s newer, but also that it’s easier to copy and perform. Whereas the original is so H.O.T and feels older, so I don’t think a lot of groups could pull it off. With a track like “Haengbok”, each person performing it has to be vibrant, impossible to confuse with someone else, and have their own style of performing.
We Are the Future
The tone of the last major track on the album is not heavy like “Wolf & Sheep” or light like “Haengbok”, but instead is a mix of the two.
youtube
“We Are the Future” is a high-energy dance track with lyrics about teenagers recognizing that they are the future, not the adults who are oppressive.
We're still in the shadows of the adults, We're still not free-
They fuss and bother us about this and that all day,
of course we can't do anything except get tired-
When are they gonna stop feeling satisfaction by forcing us to their ways?
One day goes by, and another day goes by,
we get more and more tired, feel like we're gonna collapse!
And yes, before you ask, this is another song by Yoo Youngjin.
Unlike “Wolf & Sheep”, which mainly rages about injustices that have been done, “We Are the Future” has a message of hope as well. The message is that you are the future, and you can change the world (and your life).
Within me, a new world is squirming to grow,
and now I will grow it and develop it on my own!
We are the future!
Throw it away! From now on, I tell you,
I'm the master of my life-
I'll believe it, I'll believe it, I'll be fine and strong on my own!
To add to this message, the MV shows a girl jumping off a roof, students getting hit by their teacher, a teenager shoplifting, and a student being bullied. These scenes are displayed between clips of H.O.T dancing and singing.
Compared to “Wolf & Sheep”, this displays scenes of reality that a lot of young people in Korea probably were familiar with either through seeing it happen to their peers or they themselves were going through it. This track is one of the reasons why H.O.T is called “The Nations First Idols” - they sang to people who were going through these issues. Unlike later groups, H.O.T never sang songs that were out of touch with their listeners.
Aside from the fact that this track is really catchy, I think it still resonates with people because they lyrics are about things that young people experience everywhere. For example, even though corporeal punishment was banned in Seoul back in 2010, it still happens sometimes in Korea (and in other countries as well).
But let’s be real, if you’re someone who isn’t at a good place in your life and you aren’t happy with where you are (or who you’re around), this song could apply to you too.
Other Songs of Interest
Free to Fly - This track also has an MV, but depending on the source, it’s a bit different. It’s cheesy 90s breakup song. If you didn’t know the lyrics you would probably assume it was a love song by how it sounds. I think this MV is part of the problem because it shows the guys being cute and saying sweet things - the audience awing over them doesn’t help either, hahaha. Yoo Youngjin must have been in a mood because “Tragedy” (which is also a track on this album), has the same kind of vibe.
The End of My Inferiority Complex - You’ve probably heard this track before because the beginning of it is at the beginning of the MV for “Haengbok”. This is the last song on the album that Yoo Youngjin had a hand in. It’s a teenage relationship drama told in one song. It’s about a guy who sees his girlfriend likes his friend more than him because his friend is all that. Since his friend has been so good to him, he feels like it would be best to breakup and let her be with his friend. However, at the end there’s a twist because when he goes to end things with her, she says:
You’ve got it all wrong,
That*s not the message I meant to give you,
I think I went too far in trying to express my feelings-
I was only so frustrated at you because you were so unconfident,
so unsure of yourself next to your friend-
Don*t be stupid, don*t fool yourself-
Hold me now, I love YOU!
It was the 90s so it makes sense that this would be the conclusion, but I want to call BS on it.
Lost 12th Birthday - This is probably one of the catchiest songs in K-Pop, and I find that it’s pretty easy to sing if you don’t know much Korean. Whenever it’s a member’s birthday, they’ll usually sing this instead of the normal Happy Birthday song, and you can usually hear fans sing it during birthdays as well. It sounds really cute and kind of nostalgic...until you look at the title of the song and find out what the lyrics are about.
This song is about someone getting in trouble, so their parents decide to not celebrate their 12th birthday. It goes on to talk about how on kid’s birthday, they went home after church to find their friends waiting for them to say, “ A joyous day a pleasant day you beloved birthday. Today I genuinely congratulate your birthday. (Happy Birthday to you)”. The kid resolves to be better afterwards and study harder. (However, considering that the lyrics at the beginning talk about how scared the kid was of their parents, I don’t think the kid is completely at fault. >.>)
Since the perspective changes during the song (Your birthday is just like my birthday. I want to be born again by your side today. So as I light you 12th birthday candle today. I want to find the memory I lost a short while ago), it’s also possible to interpret it as, “I had a bad 12th birthday, so I hope you have a better birthday than I did”.
K-Pop boy groups nowadays can make hit songs about how much money or awards they’ve gotten. H.O.T, meanwhile, has a bop about not getting to celebrate turning twelve. (Why am I fan of these guys again??)
Other Points of Interest
This was a glorious era of cringe and stupidity for the group. From Heejun dyeing his hair purple and getting banned from broadcast (part of the reason why his hair was covered during this time) to poorly written/acted dramas, Wolf & Sheep promotions had it all.
H.O.T in Joseon
H.O.T Does Math
H.O.T Become Aliens
Behind-the-Scenes of Haengbok
H.O.T Pretend to be Animals
Conclusion
Wolf & Sheep was a successful follow up to We Hate All Kinds of Violence. It was more ambitious in its critiques of society, while managing to be uplifting at the same time. Many things that were in this album parallel other tracks later in their discography. It was released right at the start of the Asian Financial Crisis, so perhaps it can be looked upon fondly as being right before Korea was hit by it. With this in mind, I want to share one last quote:
I thought about it occasionally, in what state I would be as an adult-
Could I always live like this? Oh baby-
I'm gonna make a world of my own on my own,
Don't force the same way of life on me.
Within me, a new world is squirming to grow,
and now I will grow it and develop it on my own!
WE ARE THE FUTURE!!!
If I could sum up this album, it would be with this: The future is yours, so don’t let the past keep you from making the present better.

-S P O I L S Y O U
-you mention one time you like that one thing?

-writes songs about you
-a lot of songs
-would want to hide you from the paparazzi to protect you but would tweet so many obvious things about you
-at the end of the day he just wants to be held by you
-he’s so afraid of losing you that he’ll go over the top with everything he does
-legit watches romantic movies or reads romance novels to “Study” how to be a boyfriend basically
-but then quickly finds out that type of stuff isn’t how the real world works
-I could honestly go on and on about the type of boyfriend my lil yoongurt would be cause he’s seriously the dream boyfriend
Tumblr media
-not gonna lie hobi might be kind of a mess of a boyfriend. Lemme explain
- m o o d s w i n g s
-just emotionally all over the place
-he seems to feel his emotions 10 times more than a regular person
-when he’s happy he’s OVER THE MOON
-when he’s upset or angry it’s a lot of petty attitude
-those are on rare occasions though
-he’s the type of boyfriend that clings to you
-just needs you close 24/7
-is really easy to shop for???
-I don’t think he’d particularly take you out on lots of dates
-he’s prefer bringing the dates home
-like board games and crafts
-6 months in and he’s talking about babies
-highkey just really intense
-but it’s mostly in a good way
-never forgets your birthday or anniversary
-the boyfriend that goes “it’s our three month anniversary! I got you a gift!”
-your family just ADORES HIM
-easily jealous
-ultimately is the ideal boyfriend once he gets past his own insecurities
-if you guys argue he will be the mature one to make you both sit down and talk it out
Tumblr media
-ever wish you could date a golden retriever? WELL SAY NO MORE
-jimin would be the most loyal boyfriend
-would feel bad leaving you to hang out with his friends
-so many cuddles
-will literally fetch anything for you
-you need anything? He’s already on his way to the store to get it for you
-comes back with flowers and your favorite candy
-the type to get you presents just because they reminded him of you
-lots of romantic dates
-definitely the “my best friend is my boyfriend” type
-you are the center of his world and all he wants is for you to be happy
-if you have younger siblings he’s always excited to see them and play with them
-he really quickly becomes an addition to your family
-he’s really insecure so he needs constant confirmation that he’s a good boyfriend and that you love him
-the type to make a sims family with you
-“look y/n! Our sims have 8 kids!”
-sometimes he’s so clingy it’s annoying
-like gadayum can’t anyone pee without holding their boyfriend’s hand??????
-he’s the opposite of Yoongi. Yoongi would be more likely to push you away due to his insecurities but Jimin will cling too much because of his insecurities
-Jimin would be the most attentive boyfriend ever like wow what a precious gem
Tumblr media
-so so so sooooo goofy
-lots of adventures!

-is not afraid of pda
-gets bashful when you do the simplest things. Like kissing his cheek randomly
-he can’t take it
-lmao sorry but if you’re a female reader he gonna play with your boobs ALL THE TIME
-not even in a sexual way just if it’s there within his reach it gonna be in his hand
-sometimes he gets a little intense with how childish he is
-if you try to have a serious conversation with him early into the relationship it might not go as planned
-he has a harder time letting go of his goofy and carefree side so you’ll just have to really sit him down and explain that you’re trying to be serious and want him to act the same
-after a while though it’s SOOOOO much easier
-I don’t wanna say you have to train him to be a boyfriend but you’re gonna have to train him to be a boyfriend
-what I mean by train is that you’ll have to teach him what you like and what you expect/want from him because a lot of the dating stuff won’t come naturally to him
-but don’t worry he’s got it down and will do anything to make you happy
-just be careful not to make him feel like he’s not good enough or that you’re trying to change him
-definitely wants a “my best friend is my significant other” type of relationship
-out of all the members he’s most likely to be self aware of if he’s ready for a relationship or not
-“yeah I really like this person but I’ve got a lot going on so it wouldn’t be fair to them.”
-he’s not romantic by the book but definitely romantic in his own way
-takes you to art museums and shows you his favorite paintings
-if you look closely a lot of the paintings reflect love and inner turmoils
-you basically have to read in between the lines with tae
Tumblr media

A list of 10+ faceclaims you’d like to see in the RP
Basically you know me, I am a Korean. I was thinking about all the potential different characters in play, but also began thinking about the different faceclaims I would love to see. Then I thought about what my personal expertise is -- Korean faceclaims. This is essentially a list of different Korean faceclaims of actors who I believe have a lot of potential. Kpop singers who have acted are not included because while I love them they tend to be easier (?) to find imo. Do I think people will actually use any of these faceclaims? tbh not really but hey you miss all the shots you don’t take!
MALE
Tumblr media
Song Joongki The og flower boy. People cried when he went to the army. Would be perfect for a more clean role (with a dark backstory?) Most of his roles are very # cool, like army guy, but his first prominent role was also being a ‘werewolf boy’, as well as a flirty himbo in historical times. He was also on a Kvariety before so you can find an abundance of more chill yet still good looking gifs.
Tumblr media
Yoo Yeonseok Known for being: hot. That’s it, that’s tweet. But for real, all of his roles are SO good,,, someone please get him,,, Whether it be a rising baseball player, mafia leader, or son of the CEO of a hospital, all of his roles are like for him. Always goodhearted, although sometimes he’s warm and sometimes he’s cold. (disclaimer there are exceptions). Very polite and very nice. Notable work is probably hospital playlist which I imagine people have made gif hunts for.
Tumblr media
Yoo Ah-in Super diverse roles, I haven’t actually watched all of his stuff but what I know is he’s good at acting. tmi but irl he’s like very soft spoken, very awkward and quiet, but while ACTING he can be the titular villain or whatever. Doesn’t necessarily have a lot of ‘happy emotions’ if I had to guess, but he’s also gone on variety shows. Lots of good gif hunts that you can work with as well (many of his films are kind of that niche indie that international people like) that has a large range of emotions.
Tumblr media
Ryu Junyeol His eyes though! Very soft yet he has that edge. Expressions would tend to be more chill yet due to his overall composition they still are pretty diverse. His most popular tv show (Reply 1988) def has some gif hunts of him, but he also was on a variety show which features him smiling more :)
Tumblr media
Lee Byunghan His specialty is the combo of a killer jaw and puppy dog eyes (i don’t know how he does it tbh,,). His role tends to be very cool, yet with a # good heart. Lots of serious expressions. While he has many different popular movies, his historical drama Mister Sunshine is probably the one that is giffed the most.
Tumblr media
Lee Jungjae Would probably actually die if I saw him used as a fc and it’s a tragedy that I never saw him used as a faceclaim before. His roles are all: bad guys. literally. Sometimes he starts out as being a good guy but then you realize he’s bad. Only exception is when he was the neutral god of the underworld (his costuming was a choice). Super expressive actor and one of Korea’s favorites. Disclaimer would be that he’s not necessarily popular within the tumblr users so I don’t know if gif hunts exists for him. However, there is also more than enough to make gif hunts of!
Tumblr media
Ha Jungwoo True dad. That like describes him perfectly. More on the serious side, yet he has this subtly dorky side to him. I’m also not sure what tumblr users who gif think of him, but again he has the content.
FEMALE
Tumblr media
Kim Taeri A true ally of the gay community. Her two most notable movie works is being a cottagecore bisexual (note, bisexuality not canon) and being a lesbian in historical times (note, lesbian IS canon). also her drama where like three guys are all pining for her we love that energy. Definitely has a lot of gifs, but note only her cottagecore movie is set in more modern times, the movie/drama are both in historical times where she tends to dress in different clothing. But don’t have that bother you! Really lovely actress.
Tumblr media
Park Minyoung I’m kind of a fraud because I haven’t watched her like three popular kdrama series, but nevertheless look at her face! Definitely just the standard beauty. I can honestly easily imagine her as a shop owner or a princess or something. I assume she has a lot of different kinds of gifs as well as her kdrama series were well-received by international fans.
Tumblr media
Park Boyoung Literally one of the cutest actresses out there. Boyoung may have originally gotten popular due to her cute appearance but honestly she’s a killer actress which lends themselves to different kinds of expressions. If possible I also def recommend her being some kind of magick who has super strength, because SHE was in a kdrama with super strength. You also def will have no problem with gifs with her, she’s a little darling.
Tumblr media
Park Sodam parasite parasite parasite. Park Sodam is a side character in many movies, but that doesn’t mean she hasn’t made her own mark. Besides Parasite (which will have a nice amount of gifs), she was the main character in a romance and recent netflix drama. So she already has lots of resources with different outfits / expressions. In addition to that, she’s also a member in a new show (Gamsung Camping) which is just a lot of women chilling and talking.
Tumblr media
Kim Hyesoo Probably the most underrated actress in terms of international community, she definitely has the resume. Skews more towards movies, but her drama ‘Signal’ (where she plays a police officer) was super popular. Not sure how resources will go for her but man also her face! Definitely is the more suave kind of actress with like the coolest styling.
Tumblr media
Kim Haesook something something movie industry is bias against older women. I lowkey cannot imagine a lot of resources existing for Haesook but she really is a fantastic actress. While she doesn’t really have the most expressive roles, there’s still lots of diversity in what she brings to the table. Notable works for me would be: Hospital Playlist (she actually plays Yoo Yeonseok’s mom lol) and The Thieves.
Tumblr media
Kim Hyeja Known as Korea’s mother, she has copious amount of works that I am not aware of but was also the main character in Joonho’s Mother, which was popular internationally. She definitely gives me some kind of vibe, although I’m not exactly sure what it is, so if you need a 50+ Korean women I recommend checking her out! There’s definitely resources for her, I just won’t be sure if they’re giffed or not.
Special mentions to: Gong Yoo, Steven Yeun, Yoo Haejin, Bae Doona, Park Shinhye, Lee Jungeun, Lee Dongwook

Hermione Granger, Luna Lovegood, Hedwig & Lily Potter for the HP ask!
Hermione Granger: What is your favorite book, how many times have you read it, and why do you love it?
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
This only became my favorite very recently (it used to be the Half-blood Prince), so I haven’t read it as many times as the other ones. I even think it’s one of the HP books I’ve read the least. Probably 3-4 times.
I could literally go on forever about why I like it so much, so I’ll just list a couple of reasons so this doesn’t turn into a freaking essay.
The Triwizard Tournament gives it a unique structure that none of the other books have. Waiting for the tasks is really exciting so it’s easier to follow.
Cedric Diggory.
The fact that this book is basically the Ronarry shipper’s holy scripture.
Cedric Diggory.
Lots of Romione too.
Cedric Diggory.
I think the mystery and twist part is the best in the whole HP series. Though the movies completely ruined it, so the mystery there is one of the worst.
Cedric Diggory.
Sirius being a good godfather.
Cedric Diggory.
Dragons.
Luna Lovegood: One thing that makes you different from everyone else.
That’s a really tough question to answer. I mean, everyone’s unique in their own ways, but at the same time, there’s always gonna be people who relate to everything about you. It’s not like there’s stuff about me that no one else shares.
I guess I could talk about the thing I feel most alone about in my day to day life, which is my genuine interest and mostly knowledge of storytelling. I’ll discuss a book/movie/musical with someone, and I have a lot of thoughts, analyzing the theme and talking about plot-holes and shit like that, and the conversation is very one-sided. Because no one I know is really interested in it like I am (it’s ironic to talk about it here on Tumblr because here literally the opposite is true).
And sometimes it’s really frustrating, not only because I have no one to really discuss it with, but because I feel something I love isn’t being appreciated enough because most people just don’t know enough about storytelling to get how great it is.
For example, this one time I found out this girl and one of the priests at the church that I go to (yes I go to church, I’m Christian but I’m not catholic, I’m protestant) also loves the musical Wicked. And I got really excited because finally, I have people to talk to about this thing I love with. But to my disappointment, I quickly realized they didn’t love it for the same reason I do. You see, they both really liked music. So they just liked the musical for having well-written songs. So when we discussed our favorite song from the musical, and they both said Defying Gravity (of course), then got really confused when I said my favorite song was Thank Goodness. I tried explaining to them that I loved the song because of it’s relevance to the plot and theme, and how they explore Glinda’s dilemma in a really good way. How I think that her arc is the best thing about the musical and it’s what makes it unique from other stories about good and evil. That without Glinda, the story would actually be really conventional, bad and uninteresting, and wouldn’t say anything accurate about the topic of good and evil. And they’re both still like: ????.
Now, I totally get it, they and everyone else have all their right to just like musicals because of the music, and everyone has a right to enjoy media without thinking of a deeper meaning or message. But sometimes it’s just really frustrating that I have all of these thoughts about something I like but I’m surrounded by people who won’t even think about the story enough to realize that Glinda and Elphaba were in love (I understand why the priest didn’t, because she’s a 50-year-old straight woman, but the girl I was talking about is literally a bisexual activist, I’m still a little mad at her about that).
But in the fall I’m gonna start film school, so hopefully, it will get better then.
I promise I’ll stop ranting now. I always give asks way too long answers and then wonder why I don’t get any asks. I guess I just like talking about myself.
Hedwig: If you went to Hogwarts, what kind of pet would you bring?
A black cat. I know a lot of people say you’re stupid if you don’t pick an owl (cause they have the letter delivery advantage), but I don’t agree. I’ll just borrow a school-owl from the owlry. Nothing will go against my love of cats, they’re my favorite animal. (Plus, if I discover that I’m a witch I’m gonna commit fully to the aesthetic, and what says witch more than a black cat?)
Lily Potter: What color eyes do you have?
Blue/Grey. Sometimes they look really blue, sometimes they look grey, but mostly is somewhere in between.
Thank you so much for the ask! 💞

My 2019 Writing Roundup
Tumblr media
Not to get too New Age-y, but 2019 felt like a very ~transformative~ year for me. I turned 30, got a literary agent, and became a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. After feeling like I’d hit a plateau in my late 20s, it was nice to experience a sense of forward momentum again, even if the lack of financial stability in this career is a constant background stress. Still, on the whole my sixth year as a full-time freelancer felt like a time where I kinda, sorta figured out what I’m doing. Instead of struggling in murky waters, I’m at least actively swimming in them.
I continued to write for The A.V. Club, The Spool, and Consequence of Sound, plus took on new outlets in The Verge and Polygon. I also had an article about romantic comedies published in Southwest Airline’s in-flight magazine and was asked to talk about Hallmark Channel Christmas rom-coms on Canadian radio. Speaking of rom-coms, 2019 was the second year (and first full-year) for When Romance Met Comedy, and I feel like the column really came into its own this year. It’s by far the biggest undertaking of my career (I’ve covered 47 films in total so far!), and I’m really excited to continue shaping its voice in 2020.
Beyond finding a regular fitness routine and seeing Cats onstage for the first time, the biggest personal project I undertook in 2019 was immersing myself in the world of film and film criticism—something I started in mid-2018 and really amped up this year. My goal was to watch 300 new-to-me movies this year, and I wound up watching 355! (Including 129 new releases.) Regular access to CFCA screenings and screeners allowed me to be a bigger part of the film critic conversation than I’ve been in the past, which was exciting. I also tackled a bunch of blindspots from the past decade and put together a list of my 50 favorite films of the 2010s, which you can see right here:
Tumblr media
Over on the TV side of things, I bid farewell to the Netflix Defenders universe with binge-review coverage of the final seasons of The Punisher and Jessica Jones. Those Marvel binge-reviews were a big part of my early career, so seeing that universe come to a close was bittersweet. It’s always nerve-wracking when a semi-regular assignment ends, but I’m hopeful that new projects will pop up to take its place.
Putting together this year-end retrospective also made me realize I was on a lot of podcasts in 2019, including jumping in as a regular guest on the Cinematic Universe podcast in the latter half of the year. Podcasting is something I really enjoy (I find talking so much easier than writing!), and I’d love to do more of it in the future.
With that, I’ll leave you with wishes for a Happy New Year and a roundup of all the major writing I did in 2019. If you enjoyed my work this year, it would mean a lot if you would support me on either Kofi or PayPal. Or just share some of your favorite pieces with your friends!

Getting to know me(me) (again-ish??)
One; Name/alias --
Real name is Nunya Biz, but I go by Infi or Ilma, depending on where folk know me from.
Two; Birthday --
Sep. 1st! I have no idea why the date feels satisfying, but it does.
Three; Zodiac Sign --
Virgo (Aug 23rd to Sep 22nd)
Four; Height --
I have no idea for sure, but apparently around 5 foot 4.
Five; Hobbies --
I have a lot. Besides RP and MMOs, I write fanfiction and original fiction, draw traditional and digital art, sew, collect porcelain dolls and various figures, and I write music as a side pursuit.
Then there's the cooking and baking... Don't get me started on reading. And crochet. And misc. miniature crafting. Or the other video games...
Six; Favorite Colors --
I'd have to say my favorite color of all time is pink. Hot pink, soft pink, pastel pink, neon pink, magenta to salmon... I love pink.
I also love reds and oranges and purples. Blues also come in closely; yellow is a color I'm very much "meh" on. Green... Overall, I'd say I hate it in general terms fjfjshhsjdjfh
Forest green, neon green, or pastel green. Any other greens are greens I Dislike:tm:
Seven; Favorite Books --
I haven't read it in a while, but I remember that I loved "The Cat Who..." series. It was just a fun time. I should read them again...
Warriors was another that I was head over heels for, a while back. Never finished the series, though -- I got to the end of the third arc, read a couple of the extra books, then fell out of reading them.
"The Secret Piano" is also a good book, but it's... Not so much a fiction book than a translated autobiography by Zhu Xiao-Mei. It was a bit of a difficult read (for me, at least), but it's definitely a good book to read if you're interested in what happened during the cultural revolution in China.
Eight; Last Song Listened To --
LittleJayneyCakes' cover of Regardless, Cannon Busters' ending theme.
Nine; Last Film Watched --
Oh god I don't remember. We're gonna count the last film that I chose to watch, since that's easier to remember. Think it was called "Olden Time"? It was an animated short film about an uhhhhh... think of Lumiere and Cogsworth from BatB? YEAH. Except with a TV and a windup cat doll. Old 50s-ish era TV set gets tossed out, meets a little windup cat doll. Things go from there.
It's a cute little bit of animation! Also sad at bits. I don't remember how it went, really, it's been around a year, at LEAST since I've seen it, but it was good. Do recommend.
Ten; Inspiration for Muse --
I've got so many, you'd have to ask for specifics, but a short list:
Eloise, Narua, Nim, Berriath, Tabitha, Carmen, and Fraeswys were based off of original/previous characters I've had in the past.
The rest are original to FFXIV-verse, and the starting point for them always has been "let's take a hook and build off that" (i.e, Yellow Dove: Maelstrom. Sechen: Xaela. Ryoko: Astrologan and Geisha.)
Eleven; Dream Job --
I don't remember if I've said it on my blog before, but my DREAM dream job would be as a paramedic.
My second dream job and the one I'm actually shooting for is to be a piano teacher. It's just... I love it so much, and the thought of passing on that knowledge and helping other people work to play it is just something that makes me happy. It won't be easy, but I'd think it rewarding.
Twelve; Meaning Behind URL --
Uh. Um. Hm. Yeah. I think it's obvious. Self explanatory.
My username tends to be Infiniteleft, and I play FFXIV now, so.... Yeah. Actually, you can also find my BNS blog simply by changing ffxiv for BNS. There's screenshots of Taiwoo (original Tabi), Carmen, AND Nim up there, I think. Alongside a couple of shitposts.
As for "Infiniteleft".... I have NO IDEA why I went with this, but. From what I've been told I told people, I really liked the infinity symbol when I was younger, and I'm left-handed, so I mushed them together because I needed a username. After a previous set of aliases which I won't disclose for the sake of my own peace of mind, this one stuck.
Tagged by: @benes-diction had an open tag so I went ham. Hi Jonesy.
Tagging: Gonna leave this one open, too, actually, with respect towards some people just wanting privacy for the first set of questions. If you wanna do it tho. Please. Go wild.

Hey I saw your ships are open again. I wanted to ask I f you could make me one for Queen and the boharp cast? I am 5’0 black curly locks that go to my mid back, green eyes pale skin and I have lots of earrings and piercings in my ear. I love to play the guitar, singing, listening to music and watching tv shows and movies. I am quite the sassy person, also sarcastic at times but I am also a very good listener and I love to smile and just goof around. Well yeah that’s it I suppose.
Hello!!! Hi sorry this took so long but im HERE NOW gosh i had so many requests before this and i already knew who i wanted to ship you with from the moment I saw this ahhhh
Anyways here goes (it’s all below the cut hehe i dont wanna clog anyones dash)
For BoRhap, I 100% ship you with Joe Mazzello!
Tumblr media
Joe is the perfect match for you, just because he can keep up with your wit and humor so well! He loves how sassy and sarcastic you are, and his energy fuels your sharp tongue and goofy sense of humor.
He loves goofing off more than anything (see above gif), so he’s always trying to embarrass you in public, but you just end up outdoing him anyways.
“Hey, babe, look!” he’d yell almost tauntingly, daring you to look up at him from your phone as you tried to post your picture with Lucy. When you’d look up, he’d be break-dancing rather terribly to the music playing, Ben cheering him on and recording it while simultaneously trying to not die from laughter.
But you wouldn’t be embarrassed - in fact, you’d go in and show him up, stepping between him and Ben’s phone so that you were the main focus instead. He’d try to have a dance battle with you, but would quickly give up once he realized that you were a superior dancer/master at silliness.
Ben’s video would end with Joe picking you up, pretending to be mad and storming off with you as you squealed and laughed in his arms, begging Lucy or Ben, or really anyone to help you.
Speaking of helping, you love helping him catch up on TV shows and movies once he’s been away for a while. Filming takes up a lot of his life once he’s got a job, so he misses out on a lot of good movies and shows when he’s away, which prompted you to start keeping lists of everything he needs to watch once he returns from whatever he’s working on.
He loves this. A lot.
What else does he love? You in baseball caps. Whether or not you like baseball, Joe is a big baseball guy, so seeing you in a baseball cap, seated next to him in Yankee or Dodger Stadium? That’s heaven to him.
He sneaks cute little pictures of you during the game, too. A lot of them. He won’t stop until you’re grinning and trying to take his phone, and even then, he’ll sneak a few more.
They’re his favorite pictures of you - but he doesn’t post them on social media, preferring to keep them for himself. While Joe Mazzello is no stranger to social media, he feels oddly protective about his pictures of you. He instead saves them for himself, then looks back on them all the time when he’s been away from you for a while.
While we’re on the topic of being away for a while, Joe also has a tendency to ask you for videos of you singing/playing the guitar when he’s been away. Your favorite time was when he was working on BoRhap.
“Just one!” he’d begged, his voice pleading with you over the phone to send him a video of you playing a song, any song. He didn’t even care if it was Wonderwall, or some other overplayed song. “I just want to hear your voice, babe.”
“You are hearing my voice, right now,” you’d giggle, and Joe would groan melodramatically at your cheeky way of turning it around on him. “Alright, alright, give me a minute,” you’d finally assented, Joe cheering on the other side of the phone as you grinned, shaking your head.
Once you’d sent the video, it was a moment before you’d heard back from him, but he also sent a video in response. Clicking on it, you were immediately greeted with the loud sound of him practically yelling in excitement, his face taking up the screen as he situated the phone in his hand so it was easier to hold.
“You’re a natural!” he’d yelled, and then he’d received a small flick on the ear from an unknown person, who turned out to be Ben once you’d heard his voice admonishing Joe for being so loud while they were filming.
The camera had then turned to Ben, who’d waved and blew a kiss once he realized he was being recorded.
Joe quickly took the phone back, focusing it on his face again with a faux stern look. “Don’t catch that kiss, babe. Let it fly. Okay, wait, catch this one. I love you. Bye!” He’d then blown you a kiss himself, and the video cut off as you’d seen Ben’s hand come into the frame, grabbing the ‘kiss’ and laughing as Joe yelled in protest.
When it comes to looks, Joe is absolutely obsessed with you. The first time he’d went on a date with you, he’d accidentally admitted that he first noticed you because of your hair and eyes.
“It was just so striking, I had to get to know you,” he’d said, almost blushing as he recalled the first time he’d met you. You were both at a mutual friend’s party in NYC, and he’d actually gone above and beyond to come talk to you - meaning he nearly tripped over a rug on his way over.
But he thought you hadn’t noticed, so he wouldn’t tell you that, and you’d never admit that you actually had seen his stumble. You thought his clumsiness was endearing, and it’s the reason you’d entertained his attention in the first place.
“What do you mean by that?” you’d asked, hiding your pleased smile behind your glass of wine as you watched him over the rim.
“I mean, look at you,” he chuckled, gesturing to you and smiling widely. His eyes, which were always so animated, looked positively enchanted as he looked over you for a second. “You’re beautiful, how could I not be blown away when I saw you? That curly black hair...“ he’d trailed off, dramatically clutching at his chest as he feigned breathlessness.
That had provoked a delighted giggle out of you, and he’d grinned goofily as he also took a drink of his wine, chuckling at himself.
And that’s how you spend most of your time together. Laughing, because nothing is better for the two of you than the feeling of making each other laugh.
Plus, Joe is damn funny, and so are you. Win-win.
For Queen, I ship you with.... drumroll please.... crickets.... Brian May!
Tumblr media
My reasoning? Well, Brian is a bit more reserved than you, and it took him a minute to warm up to you in the beginning. Your sense of humor was a bit more advanced than his was, and he could hardly keep up with your banter, which got him flustered.
“Brian, can you help us out here a bit? You’ve been tuning Red for a fucking hour now, I think it’s good,” Roger had complained, you and him struggling to figure something out on one of the amps in the studio since John had stepped out.
Brian had shrugged, setting Red aside and joining you two in your pondering of what the hell was going wrong. Brian almost jumped when you spoke, it was so quiet between the three of you.
“She, Rog,” you’d chastised, giving Brian a knowing look. But Brian had no idea what the hell you were talking about, and he cocked his head to the side as he looked at you curiously. “It’s a she.”
“What’s a she?” Brian had asked, completely forgetting about what Roger had just said moments ago. “The amp?”
“No, silly, Red,” you’d laughed, making Brian blush lightly as he felt like an idiot once he remembered Red, sitting back on the couch. “I reckon Red is a she, just like boats are shes. I call my guitar a she. You’ve got to treat your women right, Rog.”
“Um, yeah,” Brian stuttered out, almost confused by what was taking place. He wasn’t quite on your level, but that was okay, because Roger wasn’t either.
“What are you on about?” Roger had asked, shaking his head and not really wanting an answer.
But he got one anyways.
“Oh, I guess you wouldn’t know about that, would you? Treating women with care?” you’d taunted. Brian snorted and covered his mouth as Roger had protested weakly, but from then on, Brian began to appreciate your quick comebacks and seemingly unending stream of jokes.
On the other hand, he really loves that you can sit back and listen to his rants when he needed to vent. Brian is an emotional type of man, but he’s not great at expressing his frustrations in the heat of the moment, which makes him even more frustrated with himself and leads to the bottling up of his feelings until his breaking point.
The night he’d realized he’d fancied you, he was at one of those breaking points. You were both hanging around the van, the other boys still fooling around at the pub after the gig. Brian had left early, annoyed by a spat with Roger earlier that hadn’t been resolved due to poor communication. You were already on the van, sleeping in the backseat up against the opposite window when he’d climbed in.
“Oh, sorry, love, did I wake you? Shit,” he’d muttered, sitting seat across the row of seats from you when you sat up halfway to rub your eyes, still drowsy and bleary with sleep. It was awkwardly cramped in the back, and his knees were almost up to his chest as he sat there, not sure how to position himself. You remained draped across the seat, your feet resting just next to his side
“No, no, it’s alright,” you’d murmured, stretching before looking over at him and finding that he looked a bit annoyed. “You alright?” you’d asked, turning on your side and patting the seat in front of you, offering a more comfortable spot for him.
He’d obliged, laying down in front of you and letting you be the big spoon as he sighed. “I’m just pissed off, Roger doesn’t understand what I’m trying to say half of the time...”
And from there, he’d ranted for at least an hour, barely pausing to hear your input before going on. You’d listened the entire time, nodding and playing with his hair as you did so. And when he’d run out of words to say, he finally noticed that you were braiding his hair, still attentively waiting for him to speak.
“I’m sorry if I bored you,” he’d almost cringed, biting his lip as he turned on his side so he was looking up at you. You laughed softly, readjusting so that you were comfortable laying on your side next to him, and you’d dropped the braid as you’d propped your head up on your hand.
“Well, you want to know what I think?” you’d asked, Brian nodding quickly and staring up at you as you started in with your advice for him.
The entire time you’d spoke, he’d been staring at different things, admiring you.
He admired the way your green eyes flitted around the van as you spoke, as if you were looking for the right words to say, then plucking them out of the air in that small, cramped van and putting them to use.
Also, he admired the glint of the moonlight on your piercings. Although he wasn’t a big piercing man himself, he loved them on you. In that moment, he’d realized that they only added to your beauty, which was already very present.
He’d taken a small strand of your hair in his hand as you spoke, admiring the way your skin contrasted so greatly with your hair, and he also appreciated that he wasn’t the only person having to deal with curly hair.
Once you were done speaking, he’d smiled toothily. “You know, for someone who’s always got something sarcastic on the tip of their tongue, you sure do give good advice.”
You’d smiled at that, and that smile was what had gotten him, hook, line, and sinker.
“Hey, no making out in the van unless it’s me!” Roger had yelled suddenly, throwing open the door as he crawled in, making his way on top of you two, and you’d both laughed loudly as a drunk Roger shoved his way between the two of you, making Brian nearly fall to the floor.
What a shit.

a bunch of 11 questions tags
I was tagged in a few 11 question tags over the last few weeks and am finally getting around to them. I hope you don’t mind me putting them all together in one masterpost under the cut.
thank you so much  for tagging me @anassarhenisch, @thereadingchallengechallenge, @books-are-portals, @maddie-mux and @bibliophilecats! I really do appreciate getting tagged even though it takes me a while to doing the tags.
I’ll put my own questions and the people I’m tagging up here and the answers to all your questions under the cut ;)
my questions:
1. What are you looking forward to most when it comes to the upcoming holidays? (whichever holiday you want to refer to) 2. Have you been to a concert lately? Which one?  3. Which piece of media (book, movie, video, etc.) are you looking forward to consuming next?  4. If someone wrote a fictionalized (and heavily embellished) novel of your life, which genre would you like it to be? 5. What’s the last song you had stuck in your head?  6. What’s the weather currently like where you are? 7. How many open tabs in a browser is too many? (asking for a friend) 8. Are you good with money? (if so, teach me your ways!) 9. What’s the coolest thing a teacher of yours has ever done? (I wanna become the cool teacher, so I need to do some research, haha) 10. If money, space and time didn’t matter, which animal would you like to have?  11. Share a random fact about yourself! (please?)
I’m tagging @bookvoyage, @lilymaidofgallifrey, @dreamingofreadinggoals, @aliteraryprincess, @flamingmirrorbookish, @the-forest-library, @manuscripts-dontburn and @thelivebookproject (no pressure though)  and anyone who just feels like doing this, of course!
sooo, let’s get crackin!
here’s @anassarhenisch‘s questions:
1. Celtic rock, yes or no?
I have honestly never listened to it... I’m not averse to give it a try though!
2. What’s the last book you quit reading?  quit as in abandoned? I don’t really do that... The last book I finished reading was ‘Big Mouth and Ugly Girl’ by Joyce Carol Oates
3. What’s your favourite fall activity?  baking and drinking cider! (yes you can do that all year round, but it just feels cozy, right?)
4. Do you believe in ghosts?  I’m probably a ghost agnostic. I don’t know if they exist but I’m not saying they don’t
5. When’s the last time you went to a circus or carnival?  There’s this big children’s festival in my town for two weekends every August and there’s always a circus, too. They did a special performance for all the volunteers who help with the festival and I went to that. So, long story short, like 2 months ago?
6. What does your favourite shirt look like?  hmmm good question. If we’re talking about T-shirts then it’s probably my Portal shirt.
7. Do you like eating fish?  hahaha, not at all actually! I rarely meet other people who don’t. But yeah, I actually don’t like any seafood.
8. Who’s your favourite artist?  oh man, this is a very difficult one! I’m not sure I can name a favorite. I like just being in awe of a piece of art (be it a painting, piece of music or something else) and I wouldn’t say I have one person I like better than all the others. Sorry for the lame answer!
9. Do you have any celebrity connections?  none whatsoever (that I know of)
10. Are you a sports fan?  only equestrian sports and even then I don’t need to see every event there is. But I do enjoy watching the occasional tournament
11. How comfortable are you embarrassing yourself in public?  NOT AT ALL. Good thing I became a teacher then, eh? :P
next up: @thereadingchallengechallenge‘s questions:
What are you currently reading?  I just started reading Children of Blood and Bone!
Favourite snack?  I can’t pick just one, so: popcorn, macadamia nuts, chocolate covered raisins and all things chocolate :D
Do you set yourself a reading list or pick books by mood?  half/half. I have some types of books to read each month (1 poetry book, 1 classic, 1 nonfiction book) and then choose one of those based on my mood. And then I randomly select 3 books from my tbr. Those are always a surprise!
Have you travelled anywhere so far this year?  Yup. I went to Germany 2 times (to a theme park), flew to London for book shopping and musicals twice, and went to Budapest with two friends for a weekend
Reading anything spooky before Halloween?  Not really. I’m not a spooky books (or movies) person.
Binge watching anything at the moment? I just finished binge watching Star Trek Discovery yesterday but I’m sure I’ll find something new soon.
Who’s the author you’ve read most?  Douglas Coupland, apparently
What’s your favourite season and why?  Spring! Everything is getting warmer and greener again, my depression gets better and things are just generally looking up (usually)
Are you looking forward to any new releases?  I don’t think I’m waiting for anything at the moment...
What’s a quote you love?  “No, we are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars” from Oscar Wilde’s Lady Windermere's Fan
Recommend a book?  With pleasure! It Devours! by Joseph Fink and Jeffrey Cranor
then we have @books-are-portals‘s questions:
1. First thing that comes to mind when you hear the word “waffles”?  the amaaaaazing waffles at my town’s children’s festival each year. Also Leslie Knope
2. Have you ever knitted anything? What was it?  When we learned to knit in school I knitted a scarf but I haven’t knitted anything since and I’m not sure I still could
3. What’s been the weirdest book you’ve enjoyed?   idk, what’s a weird book? Welcome to Night Vale is purposefully weird, if that counts? I’m not sure I’ve read any proper weird books...
4. Pick a random book from your shelf and recommend a film based on that book.  book: Tin Man by Sarah Winman - movie: Third Star (totally different storyline, but similar vibe, maybe?)
5. Top 5 clothing items.  - not really clothing but my riding boots (I love them. They fit me perfectly and weirdly give me so much confidence??)  - my new Pikeur breeches (yup, riding stuff again)  - the black business dress I graduated in (both High School and university)  - my Dirndl (you gotta have one if you’re Austrian :P )  - my (fake) leather jacket because it makes me feel cool  not sure this is an accurate list since I don’t really think about clothes much...
6. Name the first song that comes to your mind based on your current read. Why that song?  hmm, I’m only 50 pages into my new book, this is very difficult! maybe ‘Battles’ by Hudson Taylor? The lyrics just seem to fit and I have a feeling the book will be harrowing, which the song definitely is.
7. Would you rather visit the Moon or Mars?  I kind of want to go to Mars and see if Curiosity Rover is alright.
8. What’s your favourite scent?  top three: freshly cut grass, new tires (I know, this one is weird), and the smell of tress like cedar, fir, and pine
9. What’s the last thing you ate? Was it good?  kinder Schoko Bons and YES.
10. Name 3 positive things you’re good at.  don’t do this to me! uhmmmmm reading? singing? maybe cuddling cats?
11. What’s the strangest word from your first language(s)?  Well, I don’t really know what would be strange to you but I’m really fond of ‘oida’. It’s sort of an exclamation that can be used in a lot of different ways and its meaning depends on how you say it. So it could mean you’re really disappointed, angry, shocked, disbelieving or it could just mean something like ‘dude’. I love it and use it way too often considering it’s sort of lower class slang, I guess.
aaaand here’s @maddie-mux‘s questions:
1. First fictional crush?  I’m not entirely sure. Maybe Ziegenpeter from Heidi? :’D
2. 11 authors (dead or alive) who you would want to spend a night in a haunted house with?  oh no, that’s a) way too many people and b) not something I would ever want to do
3. Kiss, Marry, Kill - authors  I don’t really feel qualified to answer this. I don’t really get into people as much as I get into their characters and fictional universes. Doing this with real people feels weird, too, because I don’t want to do any of those actions with anyone.... I’m sorry to cop out of yet another of your questions!
4. One author whose books you automatically buy, of no matter what?  either of the Green brothers
5. Favourite fictional place?  maybe Night Vale? But not because I want to live there, just because it’s so wacky.
6. Kiss, Marry, Kill - characters  this one is easier!  kiss: Poet from Trick (before he is spoken for, of course, I’m not a home-wrecker!)  marry: farmer Oak from Far From the Madding Crowd  kill: there’s so many to choose from! but I really really hate Aaron from The Knife of Never Letting Go!!
7. Favourite place to read?  on the go
8. 11 characters who you’d take for an eternity on a tropical island?  nope nope nope - there’s nobody I would want to spend eternity with
9. Hands down, all time favourite book and why?  you should be ashamed of yourself! you know most readers can’t answer this question :P (well, I can’t anyway)
10. Favourite fictional nonhuman animal character?  is it too basic to say Black Beauty?
11. Fiction or nonfiction?  both! I read more fiction, but I wouldn’t want to live without nonfiction in my life!
last but not least, @bibliophilecats‘ questions:
Your favourite word from your first language.  I’m gonna use one of my previous answers for that and say ‘oida’ just because it’s so fun and versatile. Do you know ‘oida’ in your part of Germany?
And your favourite word in any language.  Not sure I’d pinpoint it as an absolute favorite, but I quite like ‘alas’ because it sort of embodies my view of life, haha
Name 5 positive things about yourself.  5?? It took me 10 minutes to come up with 3 for one of the questions above! Unbelievable...  - I try my best to keep an open mind  - I try to also get my students to do this  - but I also like to question things  - I’m not blind to my shortcomings  - and I do want to become a better person, though I need to put more effort into it
And now 3 things you are good at (I kept that one from @books-are-portals list because self-love is important)  I am NOT coming up with more because I am absolutely unable to do so. Sorry! (yes, I have issues, I know)
What’s your “Patronus”-memory, i.e. the happiest moment in your life?  ooooh good one! maybe the day I got my degree and graduated from university. (because leading up to this point my mental health was so bad I wasn’t sure I’d live to see that day...)
Recommend a book which you think I should read.  maybe ‘Welcome to Night Vale’ or ‘It Devours!’?
Do you set yourself a reading list or pick books by mood?  both! see above for a more detailed answer
Did you make friends on tumblr that you met (or want to meet) in real life?  I would love to meet quite a few of you! (sadly I haven’t, yet)
Last book you read that was completely outside your normal reading preference. Why did you pick it up and did you like it?  Probably the Kite Runner? I picked it up because sooo many people and many of my friends love it. I, however, did not.
Favourite christmas book?  I haven’t read many so far, but Dash and Lily’s book of Dares!!
Favourite christmas movie?  I’ve always loved Miracle on 34th street but I haven’t rewatched it in years so I don’t know if it hold up

MCU Rewatch: “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2″ (2017)
The best thing I can say without passing judgment is that the whole situation with Meredith Quill and Ego is really sad.
This film did so much for both Gamora and Nebula’s characters and their relationship. It actually did a lot more to set up for Infinity War at the time it came out than any other Phase 3 film before or after, even Thor: Ragnarok. And that in spite of the fact that James Gunn isn’t a huge fan of Thanos, so I’ve heard. Thanos is an influential character in the film without actually even being in it, just because of what he did to his adopted daughters and how they are dealing with it.
Mantis is the perfect addition to the Guardians of the Galaxy. Mantis is a precious cinnamon roll and must be protected at all costs.
Quill converted the other Guardians to music, I’m so proud.
But that’s probably because oldies music makes anything you do 1000% percent cooler including murder
A more accurate title for this film would be, “Journey to the Center of the Ego.”
Baby Groot may be cute but he is 50% more angst and murder than old Groot
Rocket and Yondu’s relationship in this film is so underrated. Rocket and Yondu GET EACH OTHER and it’s incredible to watch their scenes together. “I KNOW WHO YOU ARE BECAUSE YOU’RE ME.”
I know Rocket would want to kill me if I tried but I still want to hug Rocket.
Seriously, what is it with GOTG and “cute” characters that are actually sadists?
I think Peter Quill is still very much the 9-10 year old kid that Yondu abducted, just with more swearing and sex
“He may have been your father, but he weren’t your daddy” has to be one of the most profound things a character in the MCU has ever said.
One of the reasons that this isn’t one of my favorite Marvel films is because the swearing, crude humor, and sexual references are really intense throughout the whole film. I saw this film on opening night with my mother and I was so embarrassed for her. Gosh, the Guardians are probably 10x worse with it off-camera.
Another thing I realized tonight is that the climax/battle against Ego at the end is so much more intense than the same sequence in Vol. 1. Ego is a freaking scary dude. Like, his spaceship and display pods are really clean and creepy looking, his full powers are all kinds of intense. Not to mention the giant brain at the core--I am terrified of brains.
Basically, GOTG Vol. 2 is a horror movie masquerading as a space comedy
Dream Cosplay: painting myself metallic gold to be one of the Sovereign, if not Ayesha herself
Like, I want to BE Ayesha because she’s got a great wardrobe, ladies-in-waiting, and a carpet rolled out for her wherever she goes.
Did Groot every actually buckle up when Quill told him to?
Team Kraglin. Forever.
Another reason I dislike this film: intense depictions of murder. I’m willing to admit that the twats who mutinied against Yondu deserved it for throwing their opponents into space to die. But that doesn’t make me any less uncomfortable watching the arrow scene.
The entire mutiny arc is really upsetting to watch. They literally hazed baby Groot.
It’s funny, though, how in a movie littered with retro pop culture references the arrow’s trail kind of lights up like a neon sign
Yondu wasn’t really that great of a “dad” to Quill. He was abusive and cruel and made sure PQ got a good education in debauchery. But in giving his life for Peter, he took the chance to be the father figure that Peter deserved--the dad that anyone deserves. Yondu knew he had made a mistake--he knew he’d been immoral his whole life--but for this one thing, for this one person, he was determined to make things right
Bless Yondu for making Mary Poppins cool again.
My adopted brother recently reconnected with his birth parents. My family and I feel incredibly blessed that they both turned out to be good people. Believe me, I understand the tension of PQ finally meeting his biological father.
PQ has just basically had to put up with toxic people his entire life and it’s saddening to think about, but that’s why the Guardians are the best thing to ever happen to him
We don’t have as much detail about Nebula’s backstory as we do for Gamora’s. But I have the feeling she was also taken away from a murdered biological family. The line “I only wanted a sister” speaks volumes. Like Quill and Yondu, Nebula and Gamora were forced together into terrible circumstances, but they still bonded, and they bonded enough to want a relationship better than the one they had. Dysfunctional families are still family, and this theme carries over to the Guardians’ arc in Infinity War.
GOTG vol 2, highlights the importance of adoptive family, but it also emphasizes the fact that the family you don’t choose is still a part of you--and it doesn’t have to be a bad thing.
So in the audience with the Sovereign, Ayesha suggests to Quill that she would be interested in having sex with him and he responds that he would be more than happy to take her up on that. Then at the end, the leader of the Sovereign fighter fleet--Ayesha herself?--announces to the Guardians that they will be made an example of in order to make a point to the universe: “Don’t screw with the Sovereign”. If you take the term “screw” as a euphemism for intercourse, that line is a response to Ayesha and Quill’s “flirting”--he said he wanted to “screw” her but she’s telling him no (after she already said yes????)
So the fact that Yondu sold children to Ego is coming out JUST NOW? When did Sylvester Stallone find out about this?
Nebula needs to consider a career as a pirate/ravager. She’s so good at it.
There’s got to be a good story behind why Yondu decided to keep Quill. Maybe after he was abducted Peter ran and hid in a cubby somewhere on Yondu’s ship and that impressed him. Maybe that made Yondu realize that he couldn’t deliver a scared kid to a monster like Ego. Not this one. It needed to stop.
I like how Peter tries to be romantic with Gamora but she doesn’t get all his references.
One think I kind of dislike about Vol. 2 but not as much as some of my other points listed here is that PQ is kind of a damsel in distress. He falls for Ego’s trap hook, line, and sinker, and then he has to do the whole tentacle suspension.
One thing I noticed was that in the scene where Ego details the Expansion, Peter is standing in a patterned circular space in the middle of the main hall. In the storybook Dove Isabeau, the stepmother witch lures the heroine into her chamber and has her stand on a pentagram design in the center of the room, and with her in that position the witch casts her spell to turn Isabeau into a dragon. Interesting similarity.
“Hey, remember that Ayesha chick?” “Yeah--oh hell!”
Do all celestials want to destroy the universe and rebuild it in their image?
I get how Ego is a metaphor for colonialism, but there’s also the fact that he’s the toxic parent that tires to make their child be something they don’t want to be
Gosh, Ego’s Expansion gloop is horrifying. Especially on Earth. Is there a way to get rid of that stuff? Does it fade away or will it have to be removed? Like how are the stand-alone movie villains so scary and how is Thanos so bland in comparison?
Notice there was a shot or two of this happening on Xandar.
They gave us the whole scene with Rocket explaining the bomb to Groot and asking Quill for tape when there was an entire freaking battle going on outside like what? That was pretty clever.
That part where Groot got squeezed by Ego I was like “Noooo my son!”
Quill tapping into his celestial powers to fight Ego back as an equal was pretty impressive.
The scene with Rocket versus the Ravagers is a riot. Rocket is like a petty troll ninja--which is really a perfect description of a stereotypical sassy raccoon.
Also Nebula’s entrance in that scene is kind of hilarious.
“DING!”
Drax is a pretty sincere person, and he finds humor in everything. But he’s just off the wall sometimes. He’s dramatic. He hates music and dancing and if you’re paying attention when he tells the story of how he met his wife that’s actually just a thing they had in common, so Drax isn’t representative of his entire race.  Drax is...just Drax.
When we first see Mantis with Ego, we see she is scared. She knows what’s about to go down. But bless her heart she really makes the best of a new situation and befriends Drax--who is just as clueless as she is.
Ego admitting to PQ that he killed Meredith? Quill had the right reaction, man.
Ego even confesses that he was tempted to stay with Meredith, but he chose himself and his “mission” over her and their son. Really, he is the worst.
“If he ends up being evil, we’ll just kill him.” Easier said than done.

Three Months of Slacking
Unsuccessfully but Refreshingly trying to climb the local waterfall
“MMM, are you still alive?” – somebody on Twitter
Holy Shit! I just realized that the last time I wrote a blog post for you was on April 18th, and now it’s late July. That’s an entire quarter of a year that I have let this wonderful, golden field of interesting opportunities and people sit untended.
How could Mr. Money Mustache, a reliable stalwart of bossy financial advice since 2011 and usually good for at least one post per month, have drifted so far from his original dedication? It’s a question that earnest fans have been asking, and that I have even started asking myself.
When you break out of any habit, it can be hard to get back into it: the psychological barriers start to stack up and the pressure rises and you find yourself waiting for more and more unattainably perfect conditions that, surprise surprise, never really come.
If it’s a workout habit that you have broken, you might tell yourself,
“Oh, I just need to get over this injury or this cold.. And then my Mom is visiting next week but after that I’ll be ready to get back to the gym.“
With my blog-writing hobby I make excuses like,
“Oh, now that it has been so long, I have to wait until I have something really interesting or worthwhile to say. And yeah okay, maybe I have a few articles like that in the drafts folder, but those ones take a lot of thinking and focus to write, so I’d better wait until I am feeling really smart and focused to crack into that subject.”
But in both cases, the correct solution is just to say,
“Fuck it. I am going to just do something towards my goal, no matter how tiny.”
To get back in shape, you just need to start with at least a few pushups, which you can do right now on the floor of your office or kitchen. To resurrect the MMM Blog, Mustache just has to type some shit into the computer, and heck, why not just an easy breezy article telling you about some of the interesting things I’ve been doing in lieu of blogging?
Some stories from a real life of early retirement, which may be more relevant than plain old financial analysis and reader case studies anyway. And once we’re all caught up in life, maybe it’ll be easier to keep in touch on a more regular basis henceforth.
So in fairly rapidfire format, here’s what I’ve been up to this spring and summer:
1) Renovating The Shit Out of Our New Two-House Compound
We found the previous shower had been leaking for years and creating the most interesting scene of decay. We tore out and rebuilt the whole area, and cut in a nice window for good measure.
You may recall that back in January, I teamed up with a friend to buy the house next door, with cash, at a below-market price. Once she moved in, we realized that it needed even more renovations than we originally planned. So I’ve had a joyful time tearing down walls, framing in new windows and doors, reworking the floorplan and changing the wall surfaces, as well as fixing the shoddy plumbing and electrical work that was found along the way.
On my own house right next door, I’ve been going just a bit wild with metalworking, making all sorts of fences and decks and even a “Juliet Balcony” which features a fireman pole allowing me to slide quickly down from my master bedroom to the ground where we have a shared hot tub between our properties – in case of Hot Tub Emergencies, of course.
Cutting a giant hole in the back of my house (in February!), adding a sliding door where there was previously only a silly little shitty window, then many fun, casual days of metalworking. The last pic is my side deck, which I built mostly out of wood but also features lots of metal and a fun little outdoor kitchen including coffee machine and induction cooktop!
2) Working on a Pretty Big Documentary Project
Hmmm.. something seems different about the HQ kitchen.
I have said for years that I would never do it, but somehow a very persuasive filmmaker who has made some documentaries that I really respect, roped me into helping out with a probably-pretty-big documentary.
I did a casting call in March and found a couple that I am now coaching and working with throughout 2021. The film company doesn’t want me to talk about it much until they are ready to announce it, but suffice it to say that it is taking a lot of my time and energy, which comes out of what would otherwise be my blog-writing time budget.
However, this is the good kind of hardship – forcing me to experience things I wouldn’t otherwise get to do, and the end result will be reaching a lot more people than I could by just writing on this website alone. My fingers are crossed that it will come out the way I hope!
3) Switching 120,000 Underserved MMM Email Subscribers over for Better Newsletters
Easier signups, and better eventual emails.
Since the beginning, I’ve mostly ignored the fact that I sorta have a list of email subscribers, with predictable lackluster results. People were able to subscribe and unsubscribe themselves automatically, and the only thing it got them was an automated mailing of any new blog articles on the day that I posted them. The emails were poorly formatted, people who had non-gmail addresses often had trouble subscribing, and many probably wondered why I couldn’t make it work better.
Thankfully, a mini-crisis happened that has forced me to do the work to solve this problem, at last: Google announced that they were shutting down the aging Feedburner email service, so all of the old-school bloggers like me who were still using it were forced to migrate to a more modern platform.
I did some research, and in the end I decided to go with a higher-end option called ConvertKit, which is one of the most popular email services. It can do a lot more cool stuff, and I have taken advantage of this to create an automated (and free of course) “MMM Boot Camp” email series that people can sign up for.
It’s just a curated feed of some of my most useful articles (about 35 out of the 500), which automatically go out to people once per week until they have graduated, so you’d think it would be pretty easy for me to create this.
But as I read through my old stuff, of course I realized that much of it was crappy and outdated so I ended up partially rewriting every one of those 35 posts as I went through, which took some time. The good news is, the updated versions are here on the website as well, so the work should benefit anyone who happens to read them in the future.
4) Having lots of Fun Times (and Hard Times) In Real Life
Just another cool sunset/storm in my back yard, taken during the traditional Evening Walk.
I’ve had a series of wonderful visitors who came and stayed at my house, sometimes for a week or more. Friends and I have hosted some big events at the HQ Coworking space, which left me both energized and drained at the same time. Then I got Strep Throat in mid-July, which knocked me out for the count for a full week or more – even well after the antibiotics worked their magic, I have still been having some ups and downs with energy.
And then of course there’s the heat – I am always more energetic in cool weather (The typical 50 degree sunny days of a Colorado winter are some of my favorite for outdoor work in t-shirt and jeans). So the summer season here is always a challenge for me, with an endless procession of cloudless 95 degree desert days making me resent the very Sun I normally worship so much. I’ve been taking refuge indoor more than I should, hiding in my air conditioned house and making excuses and accomplishing less because of it. At least this has led me to the keyboard today, to write this blog post.
5) “Cutting the Pipe” at HQ and Installing a Giant Fancy Heat Pump system.
I had fun working alongside my co-owner Mr. 1500 for this work. Everything was easy about this install … except rebuilding some of the filthy century-old ductwork we found once we took out the old furnace.
Since I first bought the building in 2017, the MMM-HQ coworking space has been limping along with a clunky decades-old gas furnace, a gas water heater that was about 20 years overdue to spring a leak, no central air conditioning at all, and very high utility bills due to the way our local gas company charges commercial customers.
When you combine these irritants and contrast them with the fact that we happen to have a glorious solar electric array on the rooftop that makes a surplus of power, you can see why I would be itching to tear out all the gas appliances, cancel the service account permanently, and install all-electric replacements that are more efficient and will also save an estimated shit-ton of money each year.
I’ll save the full details of this for my very next blog article, but as a spoiler: we found and successfully installed a unit that should be able to cool and heat our building year-round, is very DIY-friendly, and cost only about $4000 to buy. It should prove to be a great annual return on investment, and I am excited to start installing these things on all of my properties and those of any friends who are doing upgrades.
And with that, I’d say we are all caught up.
In the comments: what have YOU been up to these past 3 months? And what subjects do you think we should be covering here on MMM in the next three?

DISNEY PIXAR MOVIE MADNESS! (now, with math)
Tumblr media
On March 21, in the height of March Madness, Twitter user @yeeitsanthonyy unleashed their own viral bracket buster upon an unsuspecting interwebs. Under the title “DISNEY PIXAR MOVIE MADNESS!” they set up a tournament-style, single-elimination competition between 32 films from both studios, spanning from “The Little Mermaid” to “Coco.” Deceptively simple, devised to determine one champion from two brands enjoying long runs of success.
As a Disney employee and superfan of both studios, the bracket rocked me to my core. It’s a brilliant idea that rightfully set Disney fandom ablaze. But I couldn’t help but notice the lack of explanation behind each film’s place in the bracket. The seeming subjectivity of the ordering. And most notably, a couple of glaring omissions. Much like the NCAA basketball tournaments are seeded, there had to be a statistical way to rank these films. One driven by metrics to ensure the correct films make the tournament; one that gives each studios’ substantively better performing and critically lauded works a fairer path toward total glory.
I started work immediately on using data to make a better version of this bracket.
Tumblr media
Above: the original bracket Tweeted by @yeeitsanthonyy.
Methodology
The construct of the original bracket is straightforward and compelling: Disney films fill out one side, Pixar films fill the other. I wanted to maintain this setup, since it ultimately matches up the top Disney and Pixar films in everyone’s bracket for an overall winner. But the reasoning behind which films were selected for the tournament needed to be more transparent.
Using the original bracket’s “The Little Mermaid” (1989) and “Coco” (2017) as start and end points, Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios have combined to make 49 films during the time frame it represents. Disney made 30 of those movies, Pixar made 19. That’s more films apiece than there’s room for in each side of the bracket, so we have to omit a few intentionally. But to be objective about which ones, I wanted to consider every film from both studios during this time period for the tournament.
With room for 16 films on each side of the bracket, 14 Disney films from the time period wouldn’t make the tournament, but only 3 Pixar films would miss the cut. That’s a problem – it’s unfair that it’s easier for Pixar movies to make the field. There needs to be a little more parity added to the tournament for Disney films that would be on the “bubble” quality-wise for making it in, but still have a lot of potential for making a Cinderella-type run (see what I did there?) through the bracket.
Speaking of quality, how do we rank these films? The original bracket doesn’t appear to factor in seeding, and that’s my biggest critique. In the NCAA tournament, teams are ranked #1 through #16 in each region. Across the four regions, a #1 team should be roughly the same caliber as the other three #1 teams in the tournament, the #2 teams should match up with the other #2s, and so forth.
Without any qualifications provided for why each movie is placed in its particular position on the bracket, the original gives the appearance of being entirely subjective, possibly based on the original poster’s personal preferences. My goal is to address this.
The Model
We need to rank these movies to set a bracket. Where can we find some data to build an overall metric of quality upon? The internet has made it easier to quantify a movie’s critical reception – particularly a website called RottenTomatoes.com, which popularized the “Tomatometer,” gauging the percentage of movie critics’ positive reaction to a film. It’s not really a statement of a film’s overall quality; for example, it considers a 2.5 out of 4-star review as “fresh,” indicating the critic had a positive response – not exactly glowing. But it’s a highly marketable figure, essentially an update of Siskel and Ebert’s “two thumbs up” with more data points, and it gives us a metric that at least attempts to characterize popular critical response.
The other obvious metric is the movie’s bottom line: how well did it do at the box office? That’s a challenging question, because the answer has changed over the period the bracket represents. Increasingly, it’s not good enough for a movie to just do well in the United States. Global box office has become hugely important to studios; a project’s appeal to worldwide audiences is a huge calculation in slating new releases. And there’s some major winners and losers on global box office among the 49 films under consideration.
But box office numbers can be deceiving. “The Little Mermaid” was a watershed film that marked the start of the original Disney renaissance. But it only made $211 million in 1989, when ticket prices were lower and theatrical distribution wasn’t as wide globally. By comparison, “Zootopia” (2016) cracked just over $1 billion globally. It’s weird to think “The Little Mermaid” would have been a financial disappointment by contemporary standards, so we have to factor inflation into our evaluation.
I did this by looking up the total global box office for each film on BoxOfficeMojo.com, which has a searchable database of box office information. Then, I divided it by the average ticket price for each film’s year of release, yielding a figure I called “admissions” – theoretically, the number of people who saw it in theatres. Since the population of our fine planet keeps growing, it’s not really fair to penalize older movies that fewer people would have had a chance to see. So ultimately, we need to grade box office performance on a something like a curve.
Overall, I used a weighted score to evaluate the 49 movies under consideration. 50% of that score is determined by a movie’s Tomatometer percentage. I took each movie’s Tomatometer  and multiplied it by 0.5; the product is a decimal between 0 and 0.5. (“Finding Nemo,” with a 99% Tomatometer, gets a .495 out of .5 score. “Brother Bear,” the lowest Tomatometer of all films in contention at 38%, gets a .19 score.)
Then, I evaluated box office performance to determine the other 50% of the score. I used the “admissions” figure described earlier — again, the idea is to reward movies that were the strongest performers, but not overly penalize ones that didn’t have a great box office (especially if they were still critically loved). I sorted the films by most admissions to least and assigned a perfect score of 0.5 to the film with the highest figure. Then I subtracted .005 from that score for every position a film fell down the list – enough that high performers are rewarded, but keeping a relative balance in place with critical reception, so that movies need decent scores on both to make the tournament. (“Finding Nemo,” with the highest admissions figure on the list, gets the perfect 0.5 score. “Mulan,” the median entry, gets a .365, and the film with the lowest admission, “Winnie the Pooh,” gets a .26 score.)
Add those two scores together, and we’ve got an overall weighted score between 0 and 1. Now, sort the films by those scores, and we’ve got ourselves a statistically sound-ish list!
Tumblr media
And here’s that list!
I use “sound-ish” because this model almost certainly has flaws. I could have used the “Top Critics” Tomatometer score that filters out all but the most well-known writers, which could have caused variation. As far as admissions, I have no way of knowing how close my theoretical figure is to actual; it’s just the best I can do with the available data. And also, there’s no accounting for the “favorite” factor, that feeling where regardless of critical or box office performance, you just love one movie more than another. And make no mistake – you should love what you love! Data-wise though, it’s just really hard to account for movies that became “cult” favorites, since there’s not really a good way to quantify that performance-wise. For example, you could take social media likes or conversation into consideration, but that might put certain movies (particularly older ones) at a disparate disadvantage.
One other thing: I’m standing firm on the inclusion of only Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios films, none of their subsidiaries. That means no “Planes,” and as some called out as a miss on the original bracket, no “A Goofy Movie,” either. Rest assured, if I included them in consideration, when the numbers are crunched, none of them make the tournament.
Bracketology
Tumblr media
A look at the results of this model suggests the original bracket had a few key snubs. Most notably, it left “Finding Dory” out of the Pixar bracket. The #9 weighted scorer, its credentials are sterling with a 94% Tomatometer and over $1 billion in global box office. Also snubbed was “Monsters University,” a little further down the weighted list but a certain shoo-in at #25. Much further down the list, “The Good Dinosaur” (#37) and “Cars 2” (#45), which made the original bracket, objectively don’t belong in the field.
Tumblr media
There’s also misses on the Disney side of the bracket. “Wreck-It Ralph” (#26) is omitted from the original bracket, and people forget this but “Bolt” (#27) actually performed comparably strongly on Tomatometer and box office. But right after this, we get to the problem described earlier: there’s a need for some more parity on the Disney bracket. With only three Pixar movies missing the field, we owe it to a few more Disney movies to have a shot at a tournament run. “Hercules” (#28), “Lilo & Stitch” (#29), “The Nightmare Before Christmas” (#30), “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” (#31), and “The Princess and the Frog” (#34) are separated by 0.03 points on our weighted scale. They’re all legitimate bubble contenders.
The NCAA basketball tournament solves for this and makes things more exciting with a “First Four,” where the four lowest-ranked automatic and at-large qualifiers face a one-game play-in against each other to make the official 64-team bracket. That’s how we’re going to solve for this, too: we’re going to expand the tournament field from 32 to 34 movies, with one extra round for those four bubble films to claim the last two spots on the bracket proper.
Probably my adjusted’s biggest snub among movies that made the original: “Pocahontas” is out of the tournament with its #38 weighted ranking. Despite a solid $346 million box office, its 57% Tomatometer is among the lowest in the field; it actually drops it below “The Emperor’s New Groove” and “Winnie the Pooh” as far as movies not making the tournament. (It’s okay, just imagine them all playing in a really fun consolation bracket somewhere.)
Seeding
As mentioned in the methodology, the bracket should be seeded so that quantifiably better movies earn a little bit easier of a run through the bracket (assuming they’re winners in your heart, too). I subdivided the Disney and Pixar sides of the bracket into a two regions of eight movies apiece, so we’ll have four sets of #1 through #8 seeds. The idea is that each numerical seed is of roughly equal quality to the movies in other regions with the same seeds. The #1 seeds in each region are pretty impeccable – and immediately lent themselves to the idea of organizing the regions by older and new entries from both studios.
“Finding Nemo” tops the Classic Pixar Region, while “Toy Story 3” tops the New Pixar Region. “The Lion King” tops the Disney Renaissance Region, while “Zootopia” might be a slight surprise as the top of the Second Renaissance Region, but the credentials are definitely there.
In the first round, #1 seeds face off against #8 seeds; that winner plays the victor of the matchup between #3 and #4 – technically, the easiest path through the field to the Disney or Pixar final round. The #2 seeds get #7 seeds, facing off against the winner of the #3 and #6 seeds. If the top two seeds win out, the final on each side of the bracket matches #1 against #2.
That means “Nemo” gets “Cars” in Classic Pixar, where my favorite opening round matchup puts #3 “Toy Story 2” against #6 “Ratatouille” – the Little Chef could be poised to cook up a nice run in many brackets. In New Pixar, TS3 gets “Brave,” while #6 “Wall-E” could certainly clean up against #3 “Finding Dory.”
Now, checking out the Disney side of the bracket. The two play-in rounds are for the #8 seed, meaning “Lion King” gets the winner between “Nightmare” and “Hunchback” in the Disney Renaissance, while “Zootopia” gets the winner of “Lilo & Stitch” and “Princess and the Frog” in Second Renaissance. (Just to get out ahead of this: “Lilo & Stitch” isn’t part of the actual Second Disney Renaissance; it falls in that weird shadow time between the two, but being released on the 2000s side of the millennium line, I decided to lump it in with the movies in the newer half of the bracket.)
In Disney Renaissance, “The Little Mermaid” is ready to go where the winners go, despite being a #5 seed. In Second Renaissance, I think “Zootopia” might be the most vulnerable of the #1 seeds in the tournament for an early exit, especially considering the crash course it faces with either with #4 “Moana” or #5 “Tangled” in the second round.
Conclusions
What exactly have I wrought with this? A painstakingly calculated, statistically semi-sound bracket that perhaps more accurately reflects the respective pop culture and financial impact of recent Disney and Pixar films, setting up an exceptionally silly, imaginary tournament slightly more equitably. Yet at the end of the day, reiterating a potential shortcoming of this model and all of the math behind it, you love what you love.
I posted my adjusted bracket and hundreds of social media likes and responses rolled in, with comments ranging from “The hero we needed!” to “This is a work of Evil.” But a few people noted that, even with corrected seeding, they still came up with the same final four and eventual winner as the original bracket. If your favorite Disney and Pixar movies were already on both brackets, there’s a very good chance you were faced with the same eventual final picks anyway. You just arrived at them in a somewhat different manner.
So, a closing thanks to @yeeitsanthonyy for their blindingly bright idea that sparked cheerful, passionate participation and conversation across the Disney fandom. I recognize it most importantly as an attempt at creating joy, and there’s objectively nothing to critique about that. But to those craving logic and order in our increasingly chaotic world, I hope you rest just a bit easier tonight.
Tumblr media
And finally, my bracket, in case you were curious.

tag games!
tagged by @shirewalker, thank you so much!
I decided not to just pick one, so I picked four and did all of them. Of course you don’t have to do all four, or any if you don’t want to do that. 🙃
tagging @admiralsamilyn, @bellamybalke, @borntosavethedoctor, @jennalouisecolemans, @tonystarkz and anyone who would like to do that
all games under the cut
1st game! Ten Questions Tag Game
What’s the earliest story you remember writing?
It was a Jonas Brothers fanfic. I was twelve.
Which do you prefer to write? Short stories of longer ones?
Long ones. I tried the short ones, but it’s just impossible for me. I put a lot into the world building and the characters and sometimes it takes chapters for me to actually get to the main plot. Also I usually plan ahead pretty early in the story.
Do you think your writing is ready to be seen by the world?
No, dear god, no. I'm very insecure about that, mainly because I was very bad at it in primary school. And I believe it was the thing that made me work it out, but I’m still too insecure to do that.
Which OC would be the best company when writing and which would be the worst?
Hmm. I think the best would be Kenna. She is a writer herself, so she would be pretty helpful.
The worst one would be Bonnie. She is from a story I cannot really put under any genre yet and she is the type of person who doesn’t like to sit around and do something like writing. She would rather be out and protest and fight for her homeland.
Do you have a favourite world you’d give anything to visit?
I would love to visit Narnia, I mean for someone who’s favorite animal was and is a lion, meeting Aslan was goals. Also the Land of Oz. This one is still goals. I love that world so much, the whole Nonestica is just so unique and fascinating.
Any writing rituals? Special place, special time of the day, special medium to write a draft on, etc.
I like to write in the afternoon much better, but the best ideas always comes after 10 pm, so sometimes I found myself still writing at 1 am. My drafts are so messed up, I’m happy if I can manage to get a decent one. Currently I’m planning a story and even though I started writing the first chapter, I found myself planning for four years after the first chapter takes place. Gonna be a looong story.
What’s your favourite genre to read AND to write?
For reading I like sci-fi and fantasy, but lately I only read non-fiction books. For writing I’m the best drama. I do love to write sci-fi and fantasy, but I always find a big plot/story problem that stops the writing for a certain time. Lately I only wrote drama and it’s actually a lot easier than I suspected. I have two story in that genre and both are turned out to be really great. But I hope I can do some good sci-fi / fantasy too.
Do you have friends that write too?
Sadly, no. My flatmate doesn’t even likes to read. :(

I think in the Alps.
Favourite author and how have they inspired you/your writing.
I don’t remember which author made me write for the first time (I think it was Dan Wells), but then I didn’t write for years. And for the second time, it was actually a fanfiction that made realize that I have to write and I cannot give it up.
