Discover the Wonders of Yuzu: A Household Speciality!
Tumblr media
In the tapestry of Japanese culture, certain elements stand out like vivid brushstrokes on a canvas, weaving tales of tradition, symbolism, and sensory delights. Among these treasures is Yuzu, a citrus fruit cherished not only for its tangy flavour but also for its deep-rooted cultural significance. Join me on a journey to unravel the layers of meaning behind this humble yet remarkable fruit, as we explore its role in rituals, Japanese cuisine, and the collective soul of Japan.
You might know of the famous Yuzu-yu tradition that takes place in Japan. Where people enjoy a good Yuzu bath it is one of the famous practise that is followed and loved by the Japanese people but I am going to talk about the small traditions that occur in a normal household of any Japanese family involving Yuzu. These traditions are the reason why most of the Japanese respect and adore this little fruit that has so much to offer.
Tumblr media
Yuzu is considered a symbol of Prosperity and Good Fortune although not in the same way as other symbols like the Japanese lucky cat (Maneki-Neko) or the pine tree (Matsu) but during New Year's celebrations Yuzu is often used as a decoration symbolizing freshness, vitality, and purification for the coming year. This shows the trust for Yuzu among the Japanese People. Yuzu branches are displayed in homes as well as public spaces. They are often arranged in vases or decorative containers, the green leaves and bright Yuzu fruit look elegant and enhance the festive ambience.
In many regions of Japan whenever a Yuzu dish is cooked in a household it is always shared with the neighbours symbolizing the affection, togetherness and common love for Yuzu among people. It is almost considered a small occasion if you get a Yuzu dish from your neighbours. After all who doesn't like a good Yuzu Marinade or Yuzu Sweet dish. Particularly during the Winter season, hot soups and stews with Yuzu Flavour are cherished. Made from yuzu zest and chilli peppers, Yuzu kosho is a spicy condiment, prepared in a Japanese household which is also commonly enjoyed during winter to add warmth and flavour to meals.
Tumblr media
People in Japan also preserve Yuzu by making yuzu vinegar, yuzu marmalade, or drying yuzu peels for later use. Another inseparable part of the Japanese household is Yuzu-cha or Yuzu Tea. In Japan, Yuzu cha is made primarily from yuzu fruit, honey or sugar, and hot water. Optionally, additional ingredients like ginger or cinnamon may be added for extra flavour and warmth. It is a very refreshing drink consumed very often but this hot Yuzu cha is enjoyed by Japanese people, especially during cold winters. They take Yuzu-cha in small teacups or larger mugs, depending on personal preference and enjoy its flavour and warmth with comfort. Some people also like to have it chilled during warmer weather.
Yuzu is hence called a versatile ingredient and has a big role in the Culinary and Festive culture of Japan. It connects people to seasonal traditions and rituals. Yuzu has been getting immense love from households in Japan over the past so many years. Its flavour and exotic taste are deeply rooted in Japanese people's minds and its spectacle brings a feeling of homeness in their hearts. Overall, it is a cherished ingredient and cultural symbol deeply ingrained in Japanese culture.

Brought mum to try the Japanese foods at Tokyo Shokudo (東京食堂) located in Northpoint City. This restaurant chain is halal certified so all the pork ingredients had been replaced with chicken. Browsing through the menu, I picked their recommended tempura rice dish while I chose ramen for mum.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Signature Tendon (特製天丼) priced at S$13.90++ came piled with an assortment of fried battered prawn, fish, vegetables and a sheet of nori or seaweed. As I lifted out some of the crispy tempura items to get to the rice below, there it is, a hidden fried egg still warm with oozing egg yolk! Mixed the yolk into the rice and proceeded to devour the donburi.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The portion in mum’s Chicken Cha Shu Yuzu Ramen (鶏チャーシューラーメン) seems underwhelming considering it cost the same S$13.90++. Unfortunately, mum didn’t take to the ramen with modern twist. She found the yuzu and ramen combination flavours strange so she didn’t finish her meal. :(

Ro's favourite sweets?
Also not me having missing Insu and old emperor moment lol. Still supoorting you but Definitely going to miss how things used to be
i think i've answered a similar ask in with the old ro roster but i'll answer it again!! and :( for the insu loss but at least he's still in the book for you to annoy befriend!!
hansol: yakgwa. it's a layered cookie made with honey, sesame oil, ginger, and pressed into moulds to give them a distinctive flower shape. they are then deep fried and covered in a sweet, sticky syrup. hansol prefers not to indulge, but he always thinks 'one more' when reaching for these. he snacked on them a lot as a child.
yongsun: half moon shaped rice cakes with sweet filling such as red bean paste, honey, yuzu or other such ingredients. their mother used to make these for their father, but after the death of the empress, yongsun no longer remembers what their mother's recipe tastes like. sometimes, they sneak to the kitchen and attempt to make it, but it never tastes the same.
wooyoung: dried persimmons. they are harvested in the autumn and strung up during the winter, during which they dry up and a thin layer of powdery persimmon sugar forms on the outside. in the first year he moved to the northern regions, he planted a persimmon tree there.
raon: jeonggwa, also known as dried fruit slices. testing poisons and antidotes and herbal concoctions have made her taste buds very sensitive, and she prefers milder flavours because of that. she also prefers them because they are easy to snack on mindlessly when she's doing research in the clinic.
no-eul: dragon's beard candy. no-eul is fascinated by the pulling and stretching and gets easily excited when the craftsman puts on a good show. the thin white sugar strands are then wrapped around crushed peanuts, and no-eul enjoys shoving the entire thing into their mouth for a taste of sweetness.
????: curdled milk sweets. it is made by mixing cheese curds with sugar and wild berries and cutting the curds into different shapes and patterns. they take a while to melt in the mouth, so ???? enjoys sucking on a piece when on a long horseback ride over the mountains.

Everything fine and romantic until Jan introduces to Dutch meals which tests all of Kiku's adoration for Jan, and his politeness.
not the cheese and bread only 😔...jokes aside though—Dutch cuisine is more than that (and I reckon Kiku would rather like Dutch pastries). and ngl, i do think that when they first meet in the 1600s, Jan's cuisine doesn't seem that plain when he describes it to Kiku; it's more that it's different. particularly in the usage of milk, bread and meat. because one thing to remember is that while Japanese cuisine is world-renowned in the 21st century for its variety and unique flavours, a lot of dishes that Japan is now famous for didn't exist at all in the Edo period. and while nobles might eat more lavishly, Kiku might not find a simpler, more utilitarian approach to food as strange because many Japanese peasants had to do that. it's something i forget at times, but the past is a different country when it comes to taste too.
Beef teriyaki? Katsudon? Wagyu beef? Tonkotsu ramen? Matcha ice-cream? Nope. Cows in Japan were used mainly for agricultural labour, and weren't raised for meat or milk then. Pork wasn't eaten commonly either; the Japanese diet was a lot more vegetarian (in part due to Buddhist customs), with seafood often being the animal protein used. Meat dishes became more common in the Meiji era onwards; ramen has its roots in Chinese style noodles that were popularised in the 20th century. Many other fusion dishes continued to develop later from foreign influences in postwar Japan. Though of course, Castella cakes and konpeito candy were some earlier European (Portuguese) influences on Japanese cuisine. Nonetheless, I think some flavours/ingredient like soybeans, yuzu, seaweed and miso would be novel to 17th century Jan. conversely, it's historical that Jan would be the one to introduce coffee and chocolate to Kiku. so there is that too 🤔.
In the present, after they get back together again from the 80s onwards (as i personally headcanon)—I do think cooking together casually and trying new dishes is one new habit they add to their otherwise centuries-old relationship (before that, i feel like usually servants did it. their postwar (and post-imperial) life is one of more simplicity in that regard). Another dimension of how they've long shared their culture with each other, in a new but also familiar form.

Important choice lies ahead: neuhaus or marcolini special edition easter chocolates?
neuhaus:
Tumblr media
this years theme: berry
this years flavours: blueberry, sea buckthorn, blackberry, redcurrant, cranberry
marcolini:
Tumblr media
flavours: pistachio, pecan, brownie, sable breton, marzipan, speculos
Marcolini does nuanced and complex pralines but their easter collection is usually a bit boring and they are doing two biscuit flavours this year, including the dreaded speculoos.
Neuhaus does good but very basic commercial pralines, the ones you eat and go 'yeah that sure is chocolate'. However, their easter collections are bold and flavorful. especially last year with two flavour combination in a single egg (pepper yuzu my beloved)

Sephiroth, for that ask thing
Sexuality Headcanon:
Gay in the way that any person they would enter a relationship with would be a queer relationship, that's just how they work
Gender Headcanon:
biology wise I have Seph always as intersex in some regard and genderwise it depends on how much thought he's spared himself--overall I think he's nonbinary in the most overarching definition and if given the chance to exist outside shinra he would gravitate towards femininity and eventually land on only feminine pronouns for herself! as it stands canonically i think she transcends gender in the corrupted ascenion to godhood seph has, but overall has left the aspect of his gender unassessed
A ship I have with said character:
tsengseph! genseph! I like smashing the obvious yin and yang counterparts together and also the red guy with the almost-sort-of-blue guy
One day I'll answer this on a more eloquent level HAHA
A BROTP I have with said character:
aeriseph but I do also ship them sometimes--i just cannot get over the thematic resonance of the child of the calamity and a child victim of the calamity essentially unionizing. This would be peak full circle, cue the cycle breaking, cue the chrysalis to butterfly, all that jazz
A NOTP I have with said character:
angealseph/sephgeal-- i personally find angeal unbearable. he really annoys the fuck out of me im sorry angeal fans but he's not my man... I think that his hardheadedness/stubbornness in his idea of honour would grate on sephiroth, but the reason sephiroth likes him is because of his care otherwise. It's just not something I can see sephiroth pursuing romantically though Lol so in that vein I also don't really like AGS or any angeal ot3 😔
A random headcanon:
niche weirdest hc i have is the eyeball nipple ALSO applies to seph, he has that eyeball nipple guys.
Less insane hc is that he is a sugar fiend, desserts are his favourite food and his drinks could all be classified as syrup. also despite not being the biggest fan of citrus he really really likes yuzu! I tend to flit between him being vegetarian and not as well, mostly because he would be tripping over himself to try new things because he's excited over the prospects of new sensory stimulas that isnt, say, Pain in a new flavour
General Opinion over said character:
WAAAAUUUGH! i love this blorbo. I wish he had a chance to live and not die everything he was always going to be. It was really self fufilling and in the end he died as what Hojo wanted of him--never breaking free, dying under the abuse, becoming the abuse that made him. Fucking kills me! I want a world where he breaks the cycle, where he becomes the future. That's a reason I love the transformative aspect of fandom here, I couldn't love ff7 the way I do without all the AU's, there is just far too much here to mess with, to reshape.
Totally tangentially, but I don't agree with people speaking of him being irredeemable or deserving of punishment, these are fundamentally reductive ideas and don't even line with the politics of ff7 itself LOL Atonement and redemption does not mean everyone suddenly forgives and forgets, but it does mean everyone is afforded another chance. Everyone is deserving of that. Even people who've committed heinous acts, because foundationally they're still people. It all depends on whether or not they double down on their damage and believe in it till the end, if they're apathetic and even jubilant at their violence. If he came back uncaring, apathetic, and fundamentally unchanged from the blind bitter hate filled attitude he had before, then yes he is unredeemable because he is refusing it. But were he to acknowledge the wrongs and try to right them, try to move on and apologize then yes he could work for atonement. Sorry for the random anti-punishment rant LOL I've just been thinking abt this for a while, check out philosophytubes video on capital punishment (its on youtube!) for further challenges on this idea :D

We used to purchase mooncakes from Singapore Marriott Tang Plaza Hotel many moons ago until we switched over to Raffles Hotel due to their Champagne Truffle Snow-Skin Mooncake. With the latest price increase this year and low discounted offer, our pocket just couldn’t take the hit anymore.  We went back to Wan Hao Chinese Restaurant (万豪轩中餐厅) from the former hotel as they are offering a bigger discount! Immediately went online to order two boxes of Assorted Snowskin Mooncakes (萬豪精致冰皮月饼). Original price is S$88 less 40% corporate discount so we paid S$52.80.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
On the day of collection. I was dismayed to find out that the so called Mini Mooncakes (迷你月饼) are real dainty in size that one can pop the whole piece into the mouth! While the packaging was beautifully designed and accompanied with a stylish cooler bag, the boxes containing the mooncakes only had loose plastic cover so it doesn’t keep the contents airtight. Coupled with the tiny size of the mooncakes, the glutinous rice skin was dried out and hard. :(
Tumblr media
Yuzu Honey with Peach Passionfruit Praline (蜂蜜柚子蜜桃百香果奶心冰皮月饼) – A fruity and refreshing treat made with fresh Yuzu and pure honey. Featuring a medley of zesty yuzu, passionfruit and peach – the end result is a harmonious symphony of flavours when you bite into the praline.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Blueberry with Maple Cream Cheese Praline (蓝莓枫糖奶油芝士奶心冰皮月饼) – A favourite of my sis with visually stunning with eye-catching hues of blue, this new creation offers a burst of blueberry goodness coupled with a luscious maple cream cheese centre; unveiling a dense and chewy bite.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Irish Cream Latte with Baileys Praline (爱尔兰奶油拿铁百利甜酒奶心冰皮月饼) – Attention all connoisseurs of Baileys! Get boozy with this treat – sweet, milky and notes of vanilla from the Baileys praline paired with velvety smooth latte. Every mouth pack a distinctive taste, making this is my favourite of the four flavours.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
White Lotus Seed Paste with Salted Egg Praline (白莲蓉咸蛋奶心冰皮月饼) – Here’s a modern spin to a beloved classic. Imagine sweet and smooth White Lotus Seed Paste accompanied with rich creamy salted egg praline – bringing out the perfect balance of sweet and savoury flavours. This is the closest match to the traditional baked mooncake with salt egg yolk but with a chewy glutinous rice skin.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
PS - Kudos to the team at Singapore Marriott Tang Plaza Hotel for their swift action in getting in touch with my sis after she feedbacked to them on the dry and hard snowskin mooncakes. The hotel replaced our two boxes of mooncakes and I am glad to say that the snowskin got back it soft chewy texture.

25/11/2023 - Lunch
Cedric Grolet, Orchard
🧁 Madeleine
Mini madeleine, served hot. Very enjoyable.
Sandwiches
🥪 Cucumber Sandwich - served with cream cheese, good addition
🥪🧀🍖 Ham and Cheese Sandwich - Slightly heavy, couldn't finish it. Strong cheese taste that overpowers the ham
🥪 🥚Egg Mayo Sandwich - Thick layer of tasty egg mayo. More like a mashed potato texture rather than creamy and chunky. Bread was really soft for all the sandwiches.
🍪 Cookie
Salty chewy cookie with nut butter and caramel. Really enjoyed this even though it's on the sweeter side. It's just the right size.
🧁 Vanilla Tart
Nutty and crispy base with light vanilla cream. Pleasant and enjoyable.
🍋🍰 Lemon
Has yuzu filling inside. It felt a bit too much after a few more bites. Will pass on this in future.
🥥🍰 Custard Apple
Lychee filling with coconut cream surrounding it. Quite nice but somehow felt like something was missing.
🥭🥧 Mango Tart
It's super pretty! Looks like a flower with a vibrant yolk. Strong mango taste that goes well with cream.
🥧 Hazelnut Tart
Intense hazelnut flavour and super nutty throughout. Crust was also crispy. Enjoyed this immensely.
Drinks
☕️ Cold Brew Latte
Not that creamy. It's alright. Light.
🍫☕️ Hot Chocolate
Not as intense as preferred. Nice "coffee" art.
🍵 Iced Matcha Latte
Matcha also not very intense. I guess it's to complement the pastries and not overpower it
🫖 Iced Chai Latte
YUMS. This has enough tea taste and a good hit of cinnamon.

I have been (lovingly) bullied by @tideswept into sharing a snippet from the Eternally Ongoing Edits of this sithfic, now featuring 100% more diversions revolving around crickets because I am in agony.
For those who don't want to read the snippet below the cut (valid), please instead have this song parody fragment I wrote instead of editing yesterday to really get a sense of where I'm at, emotionally:
[to the tune of "Do You Wanna Build a Snowman" from Frozen] Why are people always smiling? Why must they do this with their face? Facial expressions are more broad than this, I'm kinda pissed, it's a fucking disgrace. These edits, well they hate me, and they're getting worse, I wish they would tell me why Why are people always smiling? Can they stop it with the smiling. Fuck my life.
Behold, the most awkward dinner party ever and it's not even peaked:
Compared to Organa's startled response to the Emperor's interest in his child, Mothma seems almost cavalier, amused and a little weary. "I was hardly aware that news of my daughter had reached the ears of the Emperor himself. Dare I even ask what she's been up to?" "Nothing too terrible, I assure you," his Master reassures her, gesturing for Evie to bring the next course. "It sounds as if she's quite the character." That's a demand, for all it's phrased as a compliment. Mothma acquiesces, launches into a clearly prepared and practiced story about her daughter's antics, tailored to portray her as free spirited but not heretical. There's a detachment to her, in her tailored tales and carefully chosen anecdotes, something Vader sees reflected in his Master. Everyone at the table tonight is a threat, but she's the one that Vader is least equipped to deal with. Amidala and Organa are much easier — just follow their bleeding hearts back to the source and you have them.  Vader doesn't pay much attention to the story Mothma's spinning, eating the brothy soup he's been given with relish and listening to the crickets creaking to reassure himself the shields over the garden were still in effect. The crickets are an important animal or something, his Master was very smug when he told Vader about them, but more usefully they're an organic early warning system. Any ingress and they fall silent, alerting them to the location of entry. Vader will tolerate finding them in his bathroom for that reason alone. Well, that and they taste delicious stir fried. The soup is cricket-free — more's the pity — but nonetheless has a wonderfully pine-smoked scent coming from the matsutake mushrooms that make up the base flavour. It's the same as in the steamed custard earlier, only richer and more satisfying with the addition of the broth, and the silken tofu that melts in his mouth. A delicate confection of yuzu rind garnishes the bowl, the citrus sharp in his nose as he breathes in deep.
