Dinner is packed Economy Rice or Cai Png (菜饭) as we called it in our local dialect. Crispy chicken cutlet on the left with deep-fried fishcake roll filled with carrot, seaweed and imitation crabstick in the middle. Lastly, a dish of stewed egg tofu with egg over white rice.

Mum came back from her marketing trip and got me this pack of Economy Rice (菜饭) from one of the coffee shop stall in Chong Pang. A fish fillet cooked in savoury sauce with a side of asparagus bean & squid stir-fry plus aromatic rendang chicken. Of course, one got to go with white rice with the spicy chicken dish.

Would you like a piece of this sweet and caramelized Char Siu (叉烧) or the glossy and juicy Roasted Duck (烧鸭)? The barbecued pork with the charred edges and fatty bits is bursting with smoky sweet flavours while the still crispy skin of the duck is just begging you to sink in the teeth. Here I am enjoying them with savoury rice cooked in the fats of the duck/chicken.

Muah Chee (麻糍) or Peanut Mochi is a popular street food usually found at night markets or pasar malams. These bite-sized glutinous rice balls coated in peanut powder and sugar are a sweet treat for all. Just followed the video (not mine), the recipe is pretty straight forward.

Also from Choo Chiang Roasted Meat Noodle House (珠江烧腊面家) but this time is Roasted Chicken & Pork Rice (烧鸡烧肉饭). You see, this “roasted” chicken is in actual fact deep-fried but over here in Singapore and Malaysia, everyone just called it roasted chicken (烧鸡).

Packed these Japanese/Korean fusion bento bowls from a hole-in-the-wall stall that offered takeaways on the way home from work. Got the S$6.30 bowl of Teriyaki Chicken with Rice (照烧鸡扒饭) for mum while I went with the S$6.80 BBQ Chicken with Rice (烧烤鸡肉饭). Both bowls included soft-boiled egg, corn kernels and kimchi along with white rice.

From the rustic kampong (term for village) in Malaysia came this packet of homemade Spicy Tapioca Chips. The tapioca (木薯) or cassava is hand-peeled and shaven into thin rounds then dried before frying in hot oil. Seasonings like sugar, salt and chilli powder are added to give it that savoury sweet, yet slightly spicy flavours. It is so addictive as you munch on one piece after another.

Sis dropped by Feng Food (台湾味 “丰”) at Northpoint City to pack home lunches for us. As per the usual, mum went for the Guan Miao Mian with Specially Marinated Pork Chop (猪排关庙面) while I took the Shrimp & Kimchi Fried Rice (虾仁泡菜炒饭). The fried rice might look very spicy to you due to the orangey colour but trust me, it is not. Overall, it is only mildly spicy with a sweetish note coupled fresh crunchy prawns and an over easy egg.

Dinner came with plenty of dishes piled on the plate. The sole vegetable dish is royale or garlic chives (Allium tuberosum) but more commonly called 青龙菜 which literally translated as “Green Dragon Vegetable”. Moving clockwise, there is a portion of fried batang (Spanish mackerel), below it is mum’s special braised pork belly with shiitake mushroom and an egg. And lastly, there is a fried fishcake and three boiled fish balls to go with the steamed rice.

Mum only prepared this Pork Ribs Soup to go with the steamed rice for dinner. In the bowl are two cuts of pork, fish balls, fish maw (鱼鳔/花胶), carrots and lettuces with the soup flavoured by dried scallops. Fish maw is dried swim bladders of large fishes like croaker or sturgeon. In Asian cuisine, it is considered to be one of the top four delicacies of the sea (abalone, sea cucumber, shark fin and fish maw).

This Soft Cheese Trio (S$2.20) bun from Four Leaves Bakery topped with shredded cheese is oh so good. The slit opening exposed the inside filled with cubed cheddar and creamy cream cheese. The flour dusted bread is both savoury and sweet from the two different cheeses.

Mum preps this Pork Ribs & Noodles Soup for our dinner. Beside the pieces of yong tau foo (酿豆腐), she also added fish maw (鱼鳔/花胶) and leafy lettuces. The slightly flatter yellow noodles to better soak up the dried scallop, sweetened broth.

Well, it is just the two of us eating dinner and neither wanted to go out to so I ordered pizza delivery from Pizza Hut Singapore. Told the operator that I wanted regular sized pan pizza of Seafood Deluxe and Chicken Supreme. All in, I paid S$27.60 for both the pizza.

Took a bus to Northpoint City in Yishun to do some grocery shopping and to have dinner. Restricted by mum’s limited selection of choices, we went back to Feng Food (台湾味 “丰”). She almost always falls back on her Guan Miao Mian with Specially Marinated Pork Chop (猪排关庙面) as she is not keen to try new foods. A big slab of pan-fried, boneless pork chop sits on top of handmade wavy noodles and pickled cucumber slices in a large blue & white porcelain bowl. If you are in for firm and chewy noodles, do choose this one for a change.

As for me, I typically try not to choose the same dish as mum so the camera has more choices. :D So, here is my Shrimp & Kimchi Fried Rice (虾仁泡菜炒饭) topped with an over easy fried egg. Moving the egg aside, the fragrant and tasty fried rice is dotted with six crunchy prawns neatly arranged on the rice. The rice is spicy and sweet with pieces of coarsely chopped up kimchi mixed inside.

Saw the advertisement on television promoting the bundle deal of three dishes by Tun Xiang Hokkien Delights (豚香福建馆). Thought that it was a good deal plus the fact I have not been to the place yet. Dragged mum along to Northpoint City mall on a hot weekend afternoon since I couldn't possibly finish the set meal alone.
Tumblr media
Upon seated, the wait staff informed us that you can scan the QR code on the table to access the digital menu plus order. Placed ordered for the Bundled Deal (S$28.80++) consisting of the Signature Hokkien Mee, Iberico Pork Fried Beancurd and White Pepper Collagen Pig Stomach Soup.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Signature Hokkien Mee (招牌黑猪福建面) came with a mixture of yellow noodles and bee hoon (rice vermicelli) served over banana leaf. At a glance, one can spot prawns, squids, matchstick sized pork and plenty of deep-fried pork lards soaked in the gravy. While the overall taste is decent, the flavour profile of the prawn is not pronounced enough like they didn’t use enough prawn heads and shells to render out the prawn oil.
Tumblr media
Both of us enjoyed the Iberico Pork Fried Beancurd (酥炸黑猪酿卜) a lot. The minced pork is well seasoned and stuffed into fried bean curd puffs before going into hot oil. The puff outside is crispy while the meat is juicy. Remember to dip the whole thing into the sweet thick sauce for the complete package before devouring it.
Tumblr media
Was reminded that the White Pepper Collagen Pig Stomach Soup (胶原胡椒猪肚汤) is hot when it was served. It came with thinly sliced Iberico pork, tripe, fish maw and garnished with coriander and chilli. Taking a sip of the soup, I can detect the stickiness of the collagen on the lips and the spiciness of peppercorns though I would have enjoyed a stronger peppery taste. Both the tripe and pork were tender enough but the fish maw needs a longer cooking time to get to the softer texture I preferred.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While I enjoyed the meal, mum is a lot harder to please. She claims that the noodles look like last night leftover and other than the fried bean curd, I don’t think she like the other two dishes.

When for an appointment in the morning and it ended early so I proceed to the nearby coffee shop to have my brunch at the Economy Rice (菜饭) stall. From the numerous dishes on display, I chose crispy prawn rolls (虾枣), chicken & black fungus and stewed potato slices to go with rice.
Tumblr media
On the way to the MRT train, I spied on the gorgeous confections at Paris Baguette and couldn’t resist the temptation to not eat dessert. Gotten the Blueberry Yogurt Tart (S$9.50) which is topped with glazed blueberries and red chocolate pearls. The light purple yogurt mousse is tangy sweet with marbling of blueberry compote and the sponge cake gave it substance.
