The W-43 Saga: Oldsmobile’s Experimental 32-Valve 455 V8
Tumblr media
Oldsmobile’s experimental W-43 engine is surrounded in myth, legend, and a tall tale or two. Let’s see if we can sort it all out.
Here at Mac’s Motor City Garage, we’re grateful to the World Wide Web for rediscovering so many wonderful stories in automotive history and bringing them to public attention. Still, we have to note that that often, the info isn’t always totally accurate—which is only natural, we suppose. After all, the internet could be described as the biggest and longest game of Telephone in history.
Take this fascinating engine, for instance: the Oldsmobile W-43, an experimental V8 developed in 1967-69. Various sources have described this engine as a hemi (it isn’t) or a Can-Am engine (that was never its purpose) or a double overhead-cam design (nope). In truth, the W-43 was a conventional overhead-valve, pushrod V8, in the classic Motor City style, but with special cylinder heads and valvetrain that provided four valves per cylinder.
Tumblr media
To the average car enthusiast, a four-valve head with pushrod operation—that is, each rocker arm and pushrod operating a pair of valves—may seem like an outlandish setup, but in the diesel truck world it’s fairly commonplace (Cummins and Detroit, to name two). It looks cumbersome but it works just fine, especially where high engine speeds are not required.
The W-43 was indeed based on a standard 455 CID production block, but with some key modifications, including four-bolt main caps and special valve follower retainers that bolted into the lifter valley. The spark plugs were buried in tubes in the center of the valve covers, which no doubt fed the stories that the engine was a hemi. Bore, stroke, and other significant specs were identical to the production 455 CID V8. There was also an aluminum-block variant of the W-43 designated the OW-43, and the program eventually produced an experimental four-cam, 32-valve V8 based on the production engine’s architecture.
Tumblr media
With four valves per cylinder, the combustion chambers of the W-43 were not hemispherical but rather a classic pentroof layout, utilizing shallow valve angles in the Cosworth style. Intake valves were 1.75 inches in diameter and 1.375 inches on the exhaust, providing 43 percent more intake valve area than the production 455 two-valve heads. According to a feature in the May 1971 issue of Hot Rod magazine, the W-43 was good for 440 horsepower at 4600 rpm in a relatively mild state of tune. And given the improved volumetric efficiency enabled by the far greater valve area, that figure seems downright conservative.
Reportedly, the W-43 V8 was at one point considered as an across the board replacement for the standard two-valve 455 CID V8, but as we know, that never happened. Various theories have been proposed to explain why, including stricter emissions regulations and corporate infighting with the far more powerful Chevrolet division at General Motors. But as we see it, the four-valve version’s considerably greater size, weight, and manufacturing cost would have been more than sufficient to kill the program. At least two W-43 prototype engines still exist, one of them incomplete, but their current whereabouts are unclear.

I need to ask this because it has been bothering me a lot:
Why is the desert from the rwby crossover look so…bland. There is nothing unique or special about the place??
Isn’t this the vauco kingdom area?: I was expecting something more.
Because they know we won't see it for long and will leave it as bland as possible. Or, in the worst-case scenario, this is what we're getting when we arrive at Vacuo in V10. They just need to put a whole city on top of it now.
It looks like a vacant arena that is easy to fight on with nothing flashy except for one vehicle that Ruby jumps off from. I personally think it's just the desert we saw the Atlesians get dumped into from the finale of V8.
Tumblr media
(slow-mo gif)
If there is a V10, I'm hoping the show revisions their desert scape, because what we got is just cartoonishly silly. RWBY seems to have been teetering close to child cartoon logic lately.
Not knocking on sand deserts at all, btw. I think they still have far more character than what RWBY gave us.
Tumblr media
Like, it didn't even have to be a basic cartoon desert. It could've been something we wouldn't have expected, such as an Arizonan desert where there are more dry plantations, canyons, and mountains. They already don't follow their own WoR homework, so they could mix it up if they wanted.
Even Gerudo Valley from the original Ocarina of Time wasn't flashy but it's still one of my favourite places. I'm more of an Arizona Desert person. I just really like rocks and canyons, and cacti. But I get that, that wouldn't be the exact Vacuo aesthetic.
Tumblr media
But don't get your hopes up too much. RWBY has this nasty habit of promising a city and land to explore, but we never get to see much of it.

If I had to choose, the one thing that I love the most about big, lopey V8 engines is the amount of crap you can pile on top of them. Because they're the same length as a four-banger, but sometimes up to twice as wide, there are a huge variety of mounting options for V8 accessories. This pleases both my inner child, who wants a large engine, and my inner adult, who wants more cubbies and pockets in which to store stuff.
I'm sure you are familiar with the old-school drag racer supercharger setups. Big ol' tunnel-ram intake, massive supercharger, big intake scoops, a bunch of expensive carburetors inside. All that is a stack that can easily be taller than the engine itself. It's a living cartoon, made real by the concerted effort of mechanical engineers and the existence of a temptingly-large valley between the cylinder heads. Totally rad, and also a good use of convenient storage space.
Of course, OEMs have caught onto this, too. If you own a V8-powered Lexus LS400, you've probably had to change the starter, only to find out it's not so easy to get at. That starter is buried beneath stratigraphic layers of garbage, ranging from the intake manifold, to the intake manifold's friends, to the intake manifold's relations, to the intake manifold's second cousins that it hasn't seen since the family reunion twenty years ago. And then once you finally do get it out and swapped, it's time to put all that stuff back into the car, without losing any of the bolts or tearing one of the brand-new gaskets (as if I use brand new gaskets) on the way back out. It's enough to make a guy leave it all out, and just slam a 6-71 blower stolen from a semi truck on top.
What's on top of my own V8, you ask? Well, uh... the original one-barrel intake manifold from the factory. I guess "original" is maybe a little strong, it does have a lot of dents from where the previous owner tried to pull one of the heads and ended up dropping the whole thing on its driveway. It doesn't really seal properly as a result, but it does make a cool vacuum-leak noise at part throttle, which I like to pretend is a rad drag-racing supercharger.

March 21 - 2024 Thursday
10:53pm
4/10
AGAIN no cleaning this morning because I showered first and meant for mom to run me to the store but the store doesn't open until 11am now until the owner gets back. For breakfast I made a grilled cheese, a V8, and some crackers. I stuck to watching a minecraft stream this morning. It was a streamer with some pretty wild takes that was actually sort of making me upset to listen to.
I didn't feel like streaming today but instead I joined BR's server at some point. I warmed up with some ass sketches and then finished that Shygal commission. Then I was putting together my YCH catalogue and sketched a new one for it too. I was kinda slow with work today but I did it all.
Still in the VC, I made stew for lunch. It came out okay but I've determined that the canned chicken I have sucks to put in it, I can't make it delicious without better chicken. I watched a little bit of Andor since they were streaming it in the server. In the afternoon I did a little over an hour of request sketching. I was slow but I started on the next picture to do. I left after being tired of socializing and worked on PZ's world for just enough time to meet my daily quota. Then I was done for the day. About this time my water heater finally gave out completely so my dad is going to try to fix it tomorrow. I took some 'me time' and sat down with Stardew Valley for a little bit. Then I just watched someone else play it. DS wasn't free until bedtime today. We did our puzzles and went straight into Kingdom Hearts since she was eepy.
~~~
Today I felt bad. I realized I have to find a way to put it into words instead of just saying "bad". The best way I can put it is I felt lonely and out of touch. One of those days where I feel like nothing is changing, like I'm stuck. All I knew to do was remind myself that change is slow and maybe I really can't do anything to help myself in this moment. Maybe I was also too tired in general and just need a break. I tried thinking about ACT presence today but struggled to really implement it. I think I was trying too hard to escape from my negative feelings, an act I know is fruitless but still catch myself doing.
2 things I liked about today:
Watching Andor with stew.
Kingdom Hearts with DS.
Death Ride 2023...Success!
This one is HUGE. The ride is advertised as 104 miles with 14K of climbing. My Garmin had the numbers slightly lower, but I’m not quibbling. It was an epic weekend with Mike (happy birthday!) and his cousin Neil. The Death Ride took place on a brutally hot day in Alpine County on Saturday, July 15th. We left from Markleeville at 5am and were done with the first two big climbs by 9:15am, which was good because it was starting to get very hot. According to my Garmin, the temperature went from 55 degrees at 5am to over 100 degrees at 11am. The forecast was for high of 95 degrees - not sure the Garmin was accurate, but you get the point...it was a scorcher. And the heat took its toll. Neil called it a day after the second pass. Mike was the strongest on the first two climbs but he was really suffering from the heat at the top of Ebbetts, the third pass. He said, "finish it for me" and so I did. The area from Hermit Valley to Alpine Lake is beautiful. I had to walk up some really steep parts including a 20% grade to avoid cramping. I've been victim of cramping at Death Ride in the past so was doing all I could to avoid them, from bananas & electrolyte capsules to sports drink, pickle juice, and V8. I made it out to the far point on the course, the turnaround at Alpine Lake just as the rest stop was shutting down. On the way up the back side of Ebbetts, the cramps hit my right leg so I walked it. I got two bananas, topped off the electrolyte drink at the top of Ebbetts and was able to recover somewhat on the long descent back to Markleeville. Mike was there in the town center with an ice-cold Gatorade knockoff and it was so good. Thank you, Mike! I couldn't have finished without your support, today and throughout our training. I was able to do the last climb to Turtle Rock and finished at 6:45pm, just before the finish line shut down at 7pm...Whew! After the ride, we packed up our campsite at Grover Hot Springs and stayed with Neil at a nice AirB&B in South Lake Tahoe, and the Guiness was so good. Cheers to finally finishing the Death Ride!
Briggs Automotive Company (BAC) dévoilera un nouveau dérivé du Mono R ultra-léger et axé sur la piste pendant la Monterey Car Week le 17 août, dans le cadre de sa stratégie de grande envergure visant à devenir une marque mondiale proposant des « hautes performances et ultra-légères ». "voitures de luxe". Le dérivé encore sans nom a été développé d'après la philosophie "unique en son genre" de la firme britannique, tout en offrant une "nouvelle dimension" à sa gamme. BAC a annoncé que la voiture reste fidèle aux performances et aux caractéristiques de maniabilité que l'industrie attend de ses produits tout en lui permettant d'exploiter de nouveaux marchés et d'augmenter sa présence sur la scène mondiale. Il est prévu d'être propulsé par le même moteur à essence quatre cylindres à aspiration naturelle de 2,5 litres de source Mountune que le Mono R, avec des cylindres à alésage plus large et un nouveau vilebrequin en aluminium billette qui permet d'augmenter le seuil de régime à 8000 tr/min. À 136 ch par litre, BAC a affirmé que le Mono R représentait un "record mondial" pour un moteur atmo homologué pour la route, avec un poids à vide de 555 kg donnant un rapport puissance/poids de 612 ch par tonne. Le résultat a été un Ariel Atom V8 rivalisant avec un temps de 0 à 62 mph de 2,5 secondes et une vitesse de pointe de 170 mph. La société basée à Liverpool présentera le nouveau frère du Mono R à la Monterey Car Week en Californie. Il sera dévoilé au ranch House of BAC à Carmel Valley par le président récemment nommé Mike Flewitt, de même que les cofondateurs Neill et Ian Briggs. Les prix n'ont pas encore été révélés, mais les nombreux exemplaires du Mono R à tirage limité se sont vendus bien au-dessus de 200 000 £, ce qui signifie que ce nouveau dérivé pourrait se vendre au moins autant. Un Mono F turbocompressé de 332 ch rejoindra éventuellement ce dérivé dans la gamme en constante expansion de BAC, propulsé par le moteur Ford Ecoboost de 2,3 litres de la Ford Focus ST, délivrant 332 ch et 295 lb-pi de couple.
Get Ready to Take Your Web Development to the Next Level With Node.js
Tumblr media
Quick Summary: Node is the hottest technology across the world, especially in Silicon Valley. It has gained popularity due to its real-time asynchronous architecture which enables faster connections and code execution. NodeJS developers use NodeJS to create more complicated apps such as video chat engines, real-time tracking apps, collaborative tools, social media apps, and many more.
Selecting the ideal web app development technology can be a daunting endeavor today. Nowadays, there's a plethora of programming languages, frameworks, and technologies available; making it complex for entrepreneurs and business owners to decide on the correct development tool.
Node.js is a technology that has opened up a new approach to the web application development industry. It offers lightweight, fast, and scalable applications as it does not have any dependency on any other frameworks or technologies making it a perfect fit for enterprise-level web development. With Node.js web app development, you can develop real-time applications that use massive amounts of data and support multiple languages in just one application running on low-end hardware.
What is Node.js?
Node.js makes it possible for developers to use JavaScript for both client-side and server-side scripting. This feature allows developers to create a single, unified application without having to use two separate languages. Node.js stands out from the rest of the programming languages by utilizing event-driven architecture and an asynchronous input-output API. What this means is that with Node.js, developers can create event-based applications that are highly efficient and extremely scalable.
Tumblr media
Key Reasons to Rely on Node.js for Web App Development
Now, let's explore why you should choose Node.js for your next web application development project!
Fast
Node.js is fast as it is backed by Google's V8 engines. Compared to other web development services, it compiles the JavaScript code into the native device and makes it run faster. This is why every company now hires more Node.js developers on a global scale.
They are professionals at accelerating a company's Node.js web application. One of the best examples of this is PayPal. In fact, after using Node.js, both PayPal and Netflix noticed considerable improvements in terms of performance and cost.
Enables Easy Sharing
Node.js makes sharing easy with NPM, revealing its nearness. With over 50,000 bundles for developers to draw upon, they can share, update and even reuse code without a hassle. Web development companies gain the most benefit from this dynamic package manager, which is an invaluable resource to designers.
SEO-friendly
SEO plays an integral role in web app development, and no IT firm would miss out on SEO opportunities. Node.js backend rendering provides excellent visibility to sites. That happens so that search engines can effectively optimize the React Projects. Since Node.js offers high speed and high performance, it is considered the best framework to improve SEO strategies.
 Easy Learning Curve
One of the great advantages of Node.js is its JavaScript-based system, which makes it easier for developers who are already familiar with this coding to make the switch compared to other systems. In addition, Node.js saves time and effort, as well as uses the same language for both the server and client side.
Real-time development
Real-time apps are such that provide complex, spontaneous engagement environments for users. Examples include games, messenger applications, and so on. Their development involves a lot of event-based programming and communication with a non-blocking server using Node.js as it uses asynchronous operations to optimize the coordination with the CPU and memory.
Simple & Easy hosting
Node.js is one of the most popular web development platforms that help developers build more interactive and complex applications. In addition, Node.js hosting eliminates a lot of waiting times, so the platform regularly adds new features and functionalities that help people who are associated with offering PaaS (platform-as-a-service) services.
Scalable
We are a Node.js web application development company and we specialize in creating data streaming applications, JSON API-based applications, and single-page applications, all while taking into account scalability. With the help of V8 engines, Node.js web app development allows for lightning-fast computation speeds. It also provides microservices that help break down an app into smaller processes that can be divided among multiple teams to ensure quick response time to user requests. That being said, never use Node.js for CPU-intensive processes.
Cost-Effective
Node.js web app development doesn't need a large investment, and according to recent studies, businesses that opt for Node.js use less computing power for hosting their applications.
Clean Code and Easy Readability
A code linter, a code format, and a style guide are three major tools that you'll need to improve the quality of your code. Code linters examine your source code and identify errors in syntax to help you write more accurate, clean, and consistent code. A good code formatter cleans up your JavaScript and HTML by providing aids such as improved formatting, better readability, and more standardized semantic standards.
Conclusion
Node.JS is the perfect technology for web application development. It provides an efficient alternative to creating a web application, that's why you should opt for Node.js over any other technology if you want to develop a web page or an e-commerce site.
Are you in search of a powerful platform that can help you develop web apps that are robust, efficient, and speedy? Look no further than Node.js. Our talented professionals are at your disposal for delivering top-notch Node.js development services to craft speedy, scalable, and real-time applications.
"Why did I buy this fucking piece of shit?" I asked myself as I attempted to accelerate past the lengthy stretch of vehicles traveling at no more than 65 mph on the inside lane of U.S. 60 before one of them summoned the nerve to venture into my lane and begin a 10 minute process of overtaking the octogenarians traveling at a speed .8 mph slower than his current cruise control setting. What did I expect? I was traveling from East Mesa (me and the girlfriend.....I use that term EXTREMELY loosely....had been "movin' on up" from a financial standpoint, as she had shirked her inner tendencies and avoided BOTH a major relapse (which for her always meant "job abandonment") AND had confined her violent outbursts to me, a person not in aposition to fire her OR call the cops (not my style) Meanwhile, I was loaded intermittently , but had refrained from spending more than a few hours per week at the blackjack tables, and while October was,always a decent time of year for sports betting, I had hit an uncharacteristic lucky streak. "We," which, for the most part meant "I" was,sitting pretty....or, so it seemed. I would quickly learn just how fast ill-gotten gains can disappear, and how dark my world would become when the only thing artificially lifting my reputation, perceived value, and spirit--money--was suddenly removed from the sad equation that was my existence. The relationship was done. Fuck....how long did it last this time? 2 weeks. I am always tempted to describe it as "off and on," but that term is only technically accurate....it was "on" when we first got together.....the half dozen subsequent reunifications never had a chance. There is an easy explanation for why that was, but we'll skip it. I had purchased the Nissan xterra in an attempt to impress her as someone "really committed" to her this time...I knew she liked it. It had more room for her 2 kids than my explorer and was newer and LOOKED nicer. But, just as buying a vehicle in order to APPEAR to be more committed to a relationship that deep down I had given up on (did I love her still? Yep. Did I think we, ultimately, had a prayer of making it? Not at all...and it's a shame it took so long to be honest with myself about this) similarly, a vehicle's nice, new appearance does not transform its v6 into an engine with the speed and power of the explorer's v8, thus, I became an innocent victim of a cruise control fast laner... After throwing a temper tantrum toward the "FUCKIN' PIECE OF JAPANESE JUNK" that I never should have bought and was determined,more than ever, to return and retrieve my old vehicle even if it cost me a bundle , I now began cursing the driver of the offending vehicle....you guessed it......a cream colored Chrysler LeBaron, earning the additional insult of "fruitcake" to "fuckin' 100 year old cocksucker" which, in my mind, described nearly anyone who somehow had business driving from the east valley to central Phoenix at noon. It turned out to be a 30 something in a suit, but that didn't affect my world view as I flipped him the bird while whizzing past him, finally, near the 51 on ramp. This behavior and mindset were, actually, VERY normal and nowhere near as bad as I often became....it was not a good period for me, spiritually. While I could easily become far more worked up than this with no catalyst....on this day, I had one. Though a new owner of a revoked driver's license, I sped down Indian School, hung a right on Longview, and pulled into the place where I, more or less, grew up (to the extent that I did) I hoped I was not too late.
