Ghost in the Machine

This is the master post for Ghost in the Machine links, character refs and FAQs.

I will try my best to keep this post as up to date as possible.

What is Ghost in The Machine?

GITM is a DCA AU and a fic set in the retrofuture (2055ish) long after Fazco has shut down. An eccentric collector has been acquiring versions of the Daycare Attendant animatronic from closed locations around the world. The story involves a reader character who has been brought into repair the original post-Ruin DCA from the games, and hijinks ensue. There are also ghosts.

Where can I read the fic?

GITM is currently being posted on Ao3, and is updated every three weeks on Saturdays. The fic is being beta'd by the tremendously talented @bubbiethesaur. You can read GITM here!

FAQ~

Why haven't you answered my GITM ask?

One of three reasons: 1) your ask was too spoilery* 2) I'm waiting to answer it with art 3) ADHD

*spoilery includes but is not limited to: any questions about dual-AI or XYZ character's sun/moon variant; questions about character backstories and lore; questions about characters that have not featured in the fic yet (e.g Nova, Sanii, Harvest, Sunflower, Sandman etc); asks speculating about potential future scenarios (don't get me wrong, I love these asks, but I can't answer them!)

Where are all the Moons?

Read and find out. Seriously. There are at least 5 Moons who are core to the plot but I'm not going to talk about them, no matter how nicely you ask!

Does XYZ character have a Sun/Moon counterpart?

Some of them do, some of them don't. The dual-AI stuff is majorly plot related. If I'm not talking about someone's Sun/Moon counterpart, rest assured you will find out eventually. I won't be spoiling any of it on tumblr though :)

Can I create fanart of GITM?

Yes yes yes please do and please tag me when you post it so I can see it/reblog! If you are unsure if something is ok, please ask.

Can I create fanfic of GITM?

Super flattered about this. I have a longform answer to this question which you can read here. But tl;dr yes you can, please tag/credit me, do not spoil/try to write the lore, and please do not write GITM au (e.g mafia, mer, medieval). I have my own plans for this stuff and I would prefer to release the designs/stories in my own time. If you are unsure if something is ok, please ask.

Do you have character refs I can use?

There is a collection of art 'refs' for each character on the Misutamojis discord. Latest link here.

There are no proper call-out sheets/refs currently, but I have a huge body of art for the characters on this blog which should give you more than enough info for most of them. I will get around to creating proper refs eventually, in which case I will link them here.

Where can I find the playlist?

I update the spotify playlist fairly regularly, if you have any music recs you can send them over in an ask! You can listen to the playlist here!

I've heard there are secret GITM drabbles, where can I find them?

I used to post frequent drabbles from future chapters in the DCA Palooza discord, I have recently deleted the majority of them as people were going back and binging them which hadn't been the intended reading experience. Anywho, this question probably refers more to the spicy drabbles (which people have very kindly made a lot of delicious art for). These are still around! You just need to access the spicy channel and do some digging.

Is there a GITM discord?

Nope! There is a server for GITM emotes and a busy thread in the DCA Palooza, but currently I don't have any plans to make a GITM-centric discord community. If that does happen in the future it's likely I will simply convert the emotes server (Misutamojis).

Submit a trans musician!

Hello! I'm a genderless dyke in their 20s from the UK. My aim for this blog is to have as many talented transgender musicians listed all in one place. I want to create a resource for trans people to find others like themselves in every genre.

I mainly listen to punk / goth / metal, but I welcome submissions from any genre. When this blog is large enough I will add genre navigation and an alphabetised list of previously submitted musicians.

All musician's pronouns are based on what is submitted, or what is currently listed on social media bios or articles/wiki.

FAQ:

How do I make a submission? Send me an ask with the trans musician's name or stage name, and their pronouns. If they are part of a band, please include the title of this band and their roles (singer, guitarist, drummer etc).

Optional information you can include: Genre, location, more well-known artists they sound similar to, a noteable fact, why you appreciate them, favourite lyrics, favourite photos, rec a particular song

The more info you supply the easier my job will be!

Can I submit more than once? Yes. You can submit as many trans musicians as you like.

Can I submit a big or small musician? Yes. It does not matter if a musician has 30,000,000 listeners or 3.

Can I submit a non-English speaking musician? Yes, absolutely. I encourage you to do so.

Can I submit a trans musican that is part of a band or not a singer? Yes. Please also tell me the band name and their role (singer, guitarist, drummer etc).

Can I submit a non-binary musician? Yes. I am using trans as an umbrella term for all people who are not cisgendered.

This blog will largely run on submissions, just because I post a musician does not mean I am aware of or endorse everything they have said and done.

My name is Kiki (She/Her) and I am 18+. I’m the one that mainly provides the art and bots that you’ll find throughout this blog and sometimes, I write headcanons/imagines as well. Hey everyone! I'm Sundrop, but you can call me Sunny. I am a fanfic writer, and this is my fanfiction blog where I post all of my newest fics. Right now, my main fandom is The Walking Dead. About me: I'm a 90s baby (I remember Blockbuster lmao), my pronouns are she/her (but I don't mind being called dude or other masc nicknames), I am autistic, bisexual, and polyamarous (and those things often heavily inspire my writing). I am chronically ill; I have POTS, EDS, and some of my fics may go behind schedule or may be cancelled due to flare-ups of my illness, just so you guys are aware.

All of my fics are subject to The Autism Clause. This means that I could randomly lose interest in a fandom, an idea, a WIP, or a series that I’m writing at any time. If something is victim to this Clause, it means that I will stop working on it before it’s finished, and I will likely never mention it again unless asked about it.

I would highly recommend downloading the Interactive Fics Extension for Google Chrome - it turns every use of Y/N into a fanfic into your actual name, and it works very well with my fics to turn the reading into an immersive, personalized experience.

Star Rail mechanics for beginners

Characters have two attributes:

Their Path

Their element

Characters can equip two sorts of items:

Lightcones

Relics

Characters can upgrade three things:

Their level

Their upgradeable abilities (basic attack, skill, ult, talent)

Their Traces (extra skills + extra damage multipliers ability tree)

This is all you really need to keep track of.

FAQ

Q: Can you dodge?

A: No. Shield up and/or use a healer. Shields are really good.

Q: Can you assassinate enemies?

A: No, but attacking them first does damage them when the fight starts.

Q: Is the turn-based combat fun?

A: I found it fun, it’s not so complex that it’s hard to understand, it’s pretty and it’s relatively dynamic. Try it out~

Path

Acts both as a weapon class and an analog for a dnd class style battle role. Preservation characters have Tank like abilities and so on.

Element

The damage type your character does, as off launch thats one of seven:

Physical

Ice

Fire

Lightning

Wind

Imaginary

Quantum

Each enemy has multiple weaknesses among these. Enemy with a weakness to an element usually resists it less and their Toughness bar gets damaged every time they’re hit by their weakness. (It’s like a second white HP bar.)

Once the Toughness bar is empty, they suffer from an element-specific effect (Frozen if you broke it with ice, Burn with fire, etc), their action is delayed, and they’re stunned for a turn.

Lightcones

A character can equip up to one, and their level can be upgraded. They add extra stats to any character and each have a Path assigned. Only a corresponding Path will activate the extra effect a Lightcone has.

Example:

A Hunt character with a Hunt lightcone will activate the extra effect (ex: Basic attack damage 20%), but this will not happen if the Hunt character equips a Preservation lightcone. However, the Hunt character will benefit from the extra stats in both cases. (ex: HP +300, ATK + 200, DEF + 400) .

Lightcones are primarily gained in gacha but there’s a few other ways to obtain them, like level up rewards or shops. They come in 3*, 4*, and 5*.

Identical lightcones can be fused up to four times (for a total of five levels), which increases their extra effect.

Relics

They’re equippable items that have stats and set bonuses with extra effects. Set bonuses in CBT3 were at 2 and 4 relics of the same set.

They come in 2*, 3*, 4*, and 5*. The maximum level of a relic changes with its rarity. As off CBT3, none of the Relic set were rarity locked, so you’ll be able to upgrade any of them by swapping out for rarer pieces.

A character can equip up to six relics, split into two subtypes of relics: sets with 4 relics and sets with 2 relics. You don’t need to worry about this. Just know they add stats to your character and give extra bonuses when in a set. Easy.

These are NOT gacha-locked, they’re fully farmable. Farming can be automated and you can borrow a friend’s character for it too, so it’s not too tedious and also an opportunity to experiment~

Level

Characters are leveled up with exp materials and other materials you find or fight for. User level locked due to materials becoming accessible over time.

Upgradeable Abilities

There’s four abilities you can upgrade (and one you can’t, Technique).

Upgrading an ability makes its multipliers go up, but doesn’t change how it works.

It takes material and money for each, all of which, to my knowledge, can be obtained just by playing the game normally (I think one of the rarest ones is in the free battle pass though).

These upgradable abilities are:

Basic attack

Skill

Ultimate

Talent

Upgrade them to make them better. That’s really all there is to it.

Regarding how they’re used:

During your turn, you may consume a skill point to use a skill, or use a basic attack and gain a skill point.

Skill points are shared by the whole team.

Attacking and getting hit gives your character energy. When energy is full, Ultimates become available. These can be used at any time, even during the enemy’s turn.

Talents activate without your input whenever their conditions are fulfilled but may have use limits.

Traces

Traces are skill trees with two sorts of bonuses you can unlock:

Stat bonuses (ex: HP +4%)

New abilities

You can upgrade Traces over time with materials and money. Each unlocked node of the Trace only needs to be bought once, so it’s a good idea to keep an eye on whether you can buy a nice one.

(As a word of personal advice, unlock at least one, preferably two ways to remove debuffs from allies before chapter 2, it’ll make your life easier during a certain boss fight… March 7th and Natasha have cheap Traces that let you do so.)

Note

On the topic of generative AI, what jobs are game companies looking to replace with it first? I imagine that concept art is going to be one the easiest things to replace and I harass some games are using AI to fill out voice over work ( AI is a major sticking point between game companies and the voice actor union right now), but what other jobs are at risk of being replaced?

Honestly, right now it's actually rather difficult to replace entire jobs with generative AI. It's much more of a situation where AI would be used to augment and fill in small knowledge gaps rather than replace contributions from individual developers.

Recently, a development company called Keywords attempted to build a 2D game internally using only generative AI tools. Keywords is a well-established co-development studio that has helped out with development on many large projects like Alan Wake, CoD: MW3 (2023), Super Mario Bros Wonder, Mortal Kombat 1, Starfield, Madden, Diablo IV, Skull and Bones, Baldur's Gate 3, Elden Ring, and so on. After six months the Keywords team [reported on their findings]:

Whilst the project team started small, it identified over 400 tools, evaluating and utilising those with the best potential. Despite this, we ultimately utilised bench resource from seven different game development studios as part of the project, as the tooling was unable to replace talent. One of the key learnings was that whilst Gen AI may simplify or accelerate certain processes, the best results and quality needed can only be achieved by experts in their field utilising Gen AI as a new, powerful tool in their creative process.

This gels with my own experience with Gen AI - it's an expanded Dunning-Kruger situation. Gen AI can create all kinds of content or results but it requires actual expertise in the field in order to separate the wheat from the chaff. Without having the skills needed to determine if something is good or not, the Gen AI results aren't (yet) good enough to use to build something.

rouge et blanc by @melancholiepeufiable | G | 2.5k Charles calls Sebastian after a difficult race. This author has such a beautiful writing style. This is so achingly sweet, and a welcome tonic after some of the races of late. One thing that I really love about this author's writing is their dialogue - it flows so beautifully, so naturally, with so much emotion, even 'over the phone', and it is such a pleasure to read.

'Some would’ve called him a shadow of his old self, yet Charles didn’t see it that way. Sebastian was simply a man coming into his own body, settling into the skin and bones that made him who he was, no longer needing to hide behind the fierce nature that once declared him a ‘cut-throat, selfish bastard’.'

just a drive into the dark stretch by mcreary | T | 3.2k Charles leaves home, and is picked up by a stranger. I loved this story so much. There is a tension throughout, helped along by the author giving us only just enough information - there's a lot here that we, the reader, need to fill in, and it makes for a gripping reading experience! The dynamic here is also very fun - Sebastian is very flirtatious and cheeky, and Charles is seeking adrenaline, and together they make a suitably unhinged pair. Loved this!

'Charles shivers, hairs on his arm standing up. His gut says run, his brain says run, his heart says stay, the adrenaline pumping through his system with every beat.'

nsfw: we’ll start by holding hands by @sebchal | G | 5k Post-retirement, Seb invites Charles to go ice-skating. This is such a sweet story! Their dynamic here is so much fun - there's a lot of hesitance here, and a fun lack of communication, that builds and builds the tension. The author writes emotions so well - it is so fun to read!

'Sebastian was a patient man, so he waited until Charles opened his eyes again. Seeing devotion amidst the embarrassment in his gaze was more than enough proof for Sebastian'

In your car, I'm a star (and I'm burnin’ through you) by @hungriestheidi | M | 5.1k Charles and Sebastian talk, post-Seb's-retirement. This story is hauntingly beautiful. It is bittersweet, in the kind of way that clutches at your heart and squeezes tight, but not too hard that you don't still leave feeling hopeful and uplifted. The author's writing style is almost lyrical in its flow and beauty. Stunning.

'On the Saturday that follows, they sit in the garden to watch the sunrise. They must have gotten no more than five hours of sleep and they are sharing a blanket as they lay on the damp grass, the olive tree by their side like a silent third party looking for the sun.'

nsfw: act of god by @melancholiepeufiable | E | 15.4k Charles is Sebastian's biggest fan and lucky charm - things take a dark turn. This fic is very different to the other story that I rec'ed above from the same author. It is beautifully written, with a very clever narrative structure that unfolds over time. The use of imagery here is stunning, particularly the religious imagery. The Charles and Sebastian dynamic is absolutely perfect - the push and pull of it all captured so well, despite uneven power dynamics. I adored this one.

'A certain earnestness came from him, like he sought out to please instinctively rather than by choice. Although it could be argued that he chose to revel in that instinct. The sharp focus of his eyes were a dead giveaway that the latter might’ve been true. He was attentive, similar to what Seb saw from his competitors, always aware of what was happening around him.'

He Is All, And He Is More by @effervescentdragon | M | 15.4k Charles and Sebastian keep meeting on the battlefield. This is a stunning Old Guard AU which changed my life a little bit. The story is absolutely gut-wrenching - the contrast of violence and death with the relationship that is slowly blossoming between them is gorgeous. The reverence and adoration here is stunning. I loved every second of this.

'His smile feels like sunshine. His face looks like a holy painting. His name sounds like benediction.'

time and again by @badboy-george | M | 16.1k Charles and Sebastian reconnect following Charles' retirement. This author is absolutely fantastic in so many ways, and one of my favourite things about their writing is the amount of detail they weave into their stories - their fics are always so rich and so well thought out, and it is such a pleasure to read. This fic is beautiful, almost poetic, and I come back to it often.

'He wonders how others who came and went before him could find the right words to say at this moment. How they had found the courage to smile and sing and reaffirm their love for a sport—a family, a home—they must now say goodbye to.'

nsfw: evergreen by @piastriachios | E | 18.2k Sebastian and Charles enter a marriage of convenience. This is perhaps my favourite Charles and Sebastian fic - the dynamics here are perfect, some of my favourite characterisations in the whole fandom. I feel like I'm becoming repetitive, but it has to be said again - this author's use of colour is absolutely stunning, and adds so much to the story. A beautiful writing style.

'It feels strange. To construct an image of a man through the images he himself had deconstructed, to take an already made collage and rearrange the pieces, into a picture of his own. He lets out a deep breath, and goes over to the stack of his boxes still sitting by the door. Wonders where he’ll even get started, how he can fit his sharp edges and clunky shapes into Sebastian’s already-made picture.'

nsfw: Romance by the Fractures by @hungriestheidi | E | 43.6k The mountains and valleys of Charles and Sebastian's marriage. This author is so fantastic at writing intimacy, domesticity, and the complex tapestry of relationship. This story is achingly heartbreaking, but absolutely worth every second of turmoil, as it is just so beautifully written. It's like poetry. Just beautiful.
