Hi! Love reading your writings on the whole RE franchise, and I just would like to know what you think about on a certain part regarding Separate Ways. I bought the game a while ago and have been replaying it nonstop. One thing though that always sits with me (and that I can’t seem to find any other type of discussion for) is the scene where Ada comes across Luis’ death and as she watches it from afar.

Do you think Ada genuinely felt upset and angry at Luis’ death like Leon and Ashley did? How did she feel about it in general? How she did it affect her long term or short term like it probably does to Leon? I know she chases after Krauser, but Ada constantly gives me mixed signals on how she feels lol (but I am autistic and may not be able to read her tone, face, etc, etc.). So some different perspective on it would be nice :) Thank you!

I've found that Ada gets sentimental and develops attachments to people and things. This is a character trait that she carried from OG to Remake. She's of course not a bleeding heart "save the children" type, but people grow on her and she gets attached to them. Think of the three people we actually see her interact with meaningfully in the Remake series so far: Wesker, Leon, and Luis. Ada develops some kind of attachment to all of them.

Incidentally, I think this is also why she refuses to call Ashley by name at any point in SW. She doesn't want to get attached to her, too.

We know that Luis's death affected her because of this moment:

Ada wouldn't have fucked with the bombs to save Ashley if not for Luis's influence.

In fact, Luis's death was the catalyst for a lot of change in her.

So, when Ada witnesses the "For Luis" scene and she stands up and says:

That's her own way of joining in the chorus of "For Luis" -- because helping Leon and Ashley was Luis's dying wish.

I think what would be helpful would be mapping out Ada's character arc in RE4make:

the lie she believes: looking out for myself is the most important thing

doubt moment #1: helping Leon during the village fight and at Mendez's house

test moment #1: Wesker taking her blood and yelling at her for incompetence

test moment #2: Luis expresses a desire to help Leon and Ashley

doubt moment #2: learning that she's infected, too

doubt moment #3: chasing Luis into his burning lab

doubt moment #4: sending Luis away as U3 approaches

CHANGE MOMENT: Luis's death

reinforcement of change: Ada fucks with the bombs even after Wesker pointed a gun at her

further reinforcement of change: refusing to give Wesker the Amber, despite knowing what he's capable of and willing to do to her

moment when she's actively realized that she's changed: encountering Ashley

ending mindset: helping others helps me help myself; I am not an island

I think Ada realized that she couldn't have gotten as far as she did without Luis's help, and she saw that Luis was sincere in his desire to help. So, to watch him fail sparked an "I can't let it end like this" feeling in her, which then prompted her to honor his dying wish.

What's interesting about Ada -- and what probably makes her so hard to read for a lot of people -- is that she doesn't realize right away that she's changed. Most characters have their "aha!" moment as part and parcel with their change moment, but not Ada. Her change kind of sneaks up on her and hits her all at once when she encounters Ashley and finally sees the face of the woman she's been helping all this time.

But, again, none of that would've happened without Luis.

Overall I enjoyed the Separate Ways DLC. This is not a review so much as a series of disconnected thoughts.

It is now obvious to me that the reason Ada likes Leon so much is that she, too, is secretly a giant dork. Muttering little one-liners to herself as she snipes ganados off the gondolas and such. It's adorable. She keeps trying to be playful at Wesker, but unfortunately he's abandoned his original chillness and is in irritable hardass mode, which makes me sad. I'd have liked to see at least a little banter in the beginning, before Wesker started getting impatient.

Ada's character kind of vacillates between low-key goofy like this and shutting down into a cold machine. I want to give the writers credit and say it's on purpose, like maybe she's forcing herself to change modes because Wesker chewed her out too much or the stress of her situation is getting to her, buuut. I dunno.

There's some weird inconsistencies in the writing between SW and the main campaign, like they weren't written at the same time originally, and SW doesn't quite fit at times. The Ada you meet at the start of SW is quite different from the one you first see in the main campaign.

One of those inconsistencies is the way information gets repeated between characters as if they're having the conversation for the first time. The clearest and least spoilery example is near the end, when Ada reports to Wesker that she got the amber...and a little later, gets into a helicopter and tells him that she got the amber again. He reacts as if she didn't call him the first time, or possibly hit his head and forgot about it. I know it's a minor thing but I do find it annoying.

Now to Gameplay!

Unlike the original Separate Ways, this time we get a fully functional merchant. You can fully upgrade weapons and buy a few different guns. Ada doesn't get quite the variety that Leon does, but for a 4-6 hour dlc it's sufficient.

It's fun to me that Ada gets to do little side missions too, so that means Wesker is watching me fuck around hunting for blue medallions like 'Ada. Ada I told you to find the amber. What are you doing. Now you're picking up clothes and selling them? Do I not pay you enough?' No wonder he's so grumpy.

The level design is a great improvement (which let's be honest, the original felt very rushed and low-budget), incorporating some cool new areas plus using a lot of the areas from the original RE4 that didn't make it into the campaign. There's some good new spooky parts, and I loved the new U3 (I don't think it's a spoiler at this point to say you fight U3). The way they added the hookshot to combat is fun, and I'm going to be ruined for new attempts at the main campaign when I try to melee from far away.

Can I say how much I love the music, by the way? The original pretty much just reused a couple mercenaries tracks if I recall correctly, and it got really repetitive and irritating after a while. The music in the remake uses a lot of Ada's themes from the og RE 2 and it's beautiful.

Now a couple SPOILERS

There is no new lore or information about Ada's background, which I appreciate (no seriously I don't WANT to know. let her stay mysterious. Also, why are people upset about this? Don't you know that if capcom's going to reveal information about a major character's backstory, it'll be in a random japan-only magazine or a stage play?). However, we have been given one hint. While examining the body of the burnt cop she comments on the smell of burnt flesh and how she thought she left that life behind. Which is. Dark! That's very dark, capcom! Unless she used to work in a crematorium.

Minor issue, but I'm confused why Luis seems to know Ada well (well enough that Ada's ok with him touching her) and yet have no idea who she works for or what people are helping him out. How did they meet? In the original she intercepted an email he sent to a dead colleague, and you didn't get a sense that she really knew him personally. So now I have more questions that will probably never be answered.

Wesker shows up in the flesh a few times, which is…odd? That's a lot of trouble to go to, Wesker, unless you're running around for your own separate (ways) nefarious purposes…maybe planting bombs? IDK. Not sure why he even needs Ada there, if he's on location himself. I was convinced he was a hallucination, until Ada fixed that problem and he still showed up again. In the end I don't mind, because the interactions he has with Ada are really interesting (if a bit weird) and I'm going to be spending a lot of time dissecting them. You get the sense they have known each other a long time, and Ada doesn't put up with his shit but that doesn't stop him from trying to intimidate her. (I laughed out loud when she just finished his sentence and hookshoted away from the conversation. Queen behavior)

Ada's infection is honestly just weird. It doesn't match the way plagas have been established to work, and feels very contrived, like it's there just so they could keep certain gameplay mechanics and to give an excuse why Luis couldn't just give Ada the amber once he got it. Once those pieces are set up, the infection is neatly disposed of in a way that doesn't make a lot of sense and is never mentioned again. Here I was assuming Ada could direct Leon to the plaga-removal lab because she'd been in there herself. Nope.

Ada and Krauser never interact at all. Not even a tease of a miniboss. Not a line of dialog. Two ships passing in the night (or, one ship running away from the other comically fast). This saddens me, even though I know their dynamic would have been completely different if they did meet, since Krauser's no longer a bitchy coworker. There's a lot of buildup in the section where you chase Krauser, like you expect that Ada is going to GET HIM for what he did to Luis (or at least try), and then it just fizzles out into nothing.

(and I would like everyone to know that I CALLED IT about her disguising herself as one of saddler's handmaidens)

In the end her arc wasn't really believable to me, I'm afraid to say. She seems to just follow along where the story pushes her until the very last moment, when Wesker makes one ominous comment too many and she decides to start defying him. The original version, where she was playing 3D chess and working for another mystery player all along, was much more satisfying.

And finally: it's very interesting to me that Wesker chooses to save/spare her twice in this game, despite being mad at her. Obviously she has plot armor, but it's almost like he's got a soft spot or something. Yes yes I'm sure people can come up with plenty of canned villain motivations for his actions; "he thought she was still useful" or "he's underestimating her resolve" or whatever. That's the boring option. I think it's a lot more fun to look at his actions and go 'wow wesker you not only hauled Ada to safety and a bed out of the rain, but spent at least an hour or so watching over her while she was unconscious to give Leon time to get to the cabin fight. attached much?'

Edited to add: a friend and I have been lightly going nuts trying to fit the Ada and Wesker in the cabin bit into the timeline of the main game, because if Leon chooses to go back to the chief's house to raid his attic once he has Ashley then uh. He really should have run into them? Ada doesn't wake up until the cabin fight, after all, and they both passed out around sundown. Unless Wesker shoved Ada under the bed and then hid in the wardrobe?

PoliZ’s WIP Update - 22 Nov 2023

Combining last week & this – I was on vacation and on the go, so didn’t manage much in terms of a word count. I touched 3 fics (3 WIPs) for a total of 1139 words.

I have 18 semi-active WIPs 😬 with my current deadlines being the WinterIron Bingo which wraps on 16 Dec and Stucky’Verse Bingo which wraps on 22 Dec.

See below cut for what I’m working on/planning to work on - arranged more or less by bingos/challenges/etc. As always, feel free to send me prompts or plot bunnies as well as asks regarding any of these projects or any other WIPs I’ve got out there. Interaction really helps feed the Muse and keep me motivated!

Seek & Destroy Collab

After reading @psychiccatpanda‘s amazing Morguna and the Green Queen, I got the itch to explore the Soldier’s POV and talked Faustie into collab’ing with me! We’re working on a new part of the series, and I’ve contributed about 900 words towards the 2500-ish we have so far. Going to see if I can squeeze any of my BBB squares into this fic.

WinterIron Bingo - [WIB_R1] (Ends 16 Dec 2023)

I have twenty-one fills completed for this brand-new bingo event that I’m helping mod!

N3 - FREE - filling this with Somewhere To Turn - a WinterIron No Powers AU with mall security!Bucky and young!runaway!Tony. It’s crossing over with my BBB Cold square - I’ve tweaked it a bit since posting on Tumblr (coming in at 881 words) and it will go up on Ao3 1 Dec.

Stucky’Verse Bingo Round 1 - [SVB_R1] (Ends 22 Dec)

* B4 - Sugar Daddy - looking for inspiration - combining with CABB Nov Adoptable: Sugar Baby. Possibly shrimpy!Steve and beefy!Bucky?

* A4 - Fairy Tale Curse - this seems custom-made for a continuation of Beyond the Beast😁 Nothing written yet, other than some Vague Ideas.

* C3 - FREE - probably using this for Chapter 2 of Half of the Flesh and Blood That Makes Me Whole - a Bucky POV remix of at least the first part of Take What Was Wrong (And Make it Right), which is currently sitting at 52 words. I’m expecting at least one more chapter, possibly two, depending on how far I want to take the remix.

C5 - Last Resort - Posted A Close Call to Ao3 last Friday. A pre-war Stucky ficlet with protective!pining!Bucky - also filled my HHB Dealing with Extreme Cold, and WFB - Huddling for warmth squares (250 words) along with Whumptober Delirium prompt. It came in at 827 words.

Bucky Barnes Bingo - [BBB_R5] (Ends 10 Jan 2024)

I’ve got sixteen fills, four WIPs, and a couple more Vague ideas.

* U3 - Fireplace - Working on a 1980′s No Powers WinterIron fic set at a ski lodge where Tony’s being wooed by poetry and love letters that Bucky wrote to someone else. Started poking at this as a crossover with a Love Letters prompt and it’s sitting at 129 words.

* C2 - Yelena Belova– The plan is to use this prompt in the next chapter of Peresmešnik, (aka Three Avengers and a Baby), which is currently sitting at 1303 words (600-ish of which are mine).

* C3 - FREE - the October BBB Discord party resulted in a hilarious Mob AU communal story (mobster!Bucky & clueless!Steve plus Clint&Natasha&Scott shenanigans) that several of us did/are going to contribute to Rashomon-style.

* C5 - Marriage of Convenience/Pretend Couple - next chapter of Lady Natasha’s Consort and Lord Steve’s Companion. Got a spark of an idea the other day that might get me a bit further on this fic.

* K3 - Magic - Aro!Bucky healing with a kiss idea?

* Y3 - Alpine - see WIB Iron Soldier combo.

* Y4 - Forgotten Things - using this for Chapter 4 of You Can’t Stop It With a Gun - it’s sitting at 116 words at the moment.

* May Adopted - Insomnia - finally got this filled with The Dead of Night, which also filled a Flash Fiction Friday prompt [#FFF211 An Old Friend] along with my JBB FREE square. It came in at 317 words and will post to Ao3 before this event ends.

* August Adopted: Take the Shot - sounds like a WinterHawk fic to me… maybe cross over with JBB Touch-starved? Whumptober/Fictober possibilities as well.

Micro-expressions between Leon & Ada in RE4R (Part 2)

Part 2 of the Aeon micro-expressions series. Same old disclaimer of this being an Aeon heavy post. If you don't like this ship, then skip it.

These are strictly my interpretations and opinions will definitely differ but I just wanna share.

Still bitter and angry.

She drops her head upon hearing the previous line. Wish we could see her face here.

Her 'back to business' face.

But looking a little sad after she says "Right".

He nods a few times when she tells him to continue the discussion another time.

Resume having his back turned.

A little eyeroll and small smile that says 'Women' to me lol.

And back to wondering 'Why is she here?'

On to the next cutscene of Ada talking to Wesker on comms.

Her facial expression remains impassive the whole time she talks to Wesker.

But once she hangs up, she looks annoyed that Wesker called Leon a mutt.

Ashley catches her eye and she looks a little concerned.

She stares at her comms device and makes the call to Leon.

The first comms with Leon.

Business mode activated and she is constantly looking around. She hangs up almost immediately before he gets a chance to respond. I really hope we can see Leon's facial expression in the DLC. Also… can they even see each other's faces? I can't tell since Leon just presses on his ear but there's no screen in front of him. Or did the govt implant something into Leon's head? That's why I prefer the OG comms device since both parties could see each other.

I don't know what to make about this look she gives him.

Second comms to Leon.

Another serious face. Keep in mind Leon fought Verdugo (Salazar's right hand) some time before this so… is Ada fighting U3?

She listens to him intently before smiling at his compliment.

She glances around (or maybe keeping an eye out for an enemy?) before responding.

Onto the boat scene.

A smile that says 'I'm driving'.

They both sneak glances at each other.

What/where are you looking at Ada? XD

He doesn't want to look at her just yet.

And now he looks at her and he seems tired.

He gazes at her somewhat hopefully?

Ada gets sentimental and develops attachments to people and things. This is a character trait that she carried from OG to Remake. She's of course not a bleeding heart "save the children" type, but people grow on her and she gets attached to them. Think of the three people we actually see her interact with meaningfully in the Remake series so far: Wesker, Leon, and Luis. Ada develops some kind of attachment to all of them.

Incidentally, I think this is also why she refuses to call Ashley by name at any point in SW. She doesn't want to get attached to her, too.

We know that Luis's death affected her because of this moment:

Ada wouldn't have fucked with the bombs to save Ashley if not for Luis's influence.

In fact, Luis's death was the catalyst for a lot of change in her.

So, when Ada witnesses the "For Luis" scene and she stands up and says:

That's her own way of joining in the chorus of "For Luis" -- because helping Leon and Ashley was Luis's dying wish.

I think what would be helpful would be mapping out Ada's character arc in RE4make:

the lie she believes: looking out for myself is the most important thing

doubt moment #1: helping Leon during the village fight and at Mendez's house

test moment #1: Wesker taking her blood and yelling at her for incompetence

test moment #2: Luis expresses a desire to help Leon and Ashley

doubt moment #2: learning that she's infected, too

doubt moment #3: chasing Luis into his burning lab

doubt moment #4: sending Luis away as U3 approaches

CHANGE MOMENT: Luis's death

reinforcement of change: Ada fucks with the bombs even after Wesker pointed a gun at her

further reinforcement of change: refusing to give Wesker the Amber, despite knowing what he's capable of and willing to do to her

moment when she's actively realized that she's changed: encountering Ashley

ending mindset: helping others helps me help myself; I am not an island

But, again, none of that would've happened without Luis.

186. Dave J. Browne and Don Turnbull - U3: The Final Enemy (1983)

Finishing out the U series of Saltmarsh based adventures, this is probably and unfortunately the worst of the three modules. In this one the adventures have to basically scout out a Sahuagin HQ, with the help of the allies rounded up in the previous modules.

If in U1 we discover a smuggling supplying Lizardmen with weapons and in U2 we confront those same Lizardmen only to realise that what they are really doing is trying to defend themselves against the greater threat of the Sahuagin, here we are basically sent by the Saltmarsh authorities with the Lizardsmen’s help to figure out how soon the Sahuagin will attack.

They are occupying the former Lizardmen home, so their help is invaluable. This module involves a bunch of underwater exploration and a huge number of NPCs to manage, not making it a breeze to run. Also, it ends after the scouting is done with most of the real action, including the Sahuagin attack on Saltmarsh happening “off screen” as it were. A bit on an anticlimax to a great series.

Ah, it looks like the full line of BMW U-series vehicles is finally here and ready for viewing. Starting in 1985, BMW wanted to break into the pickup truck market, so they modified their popular 5 series E12 into a sporty little UTE they dubbed the "U-series" (U standing for UTE in this instance). The large carrying capacity coupled with the performance of a BMW was pretty appealing to the European and Australian market, though not so much in America due to the large amount of pickups already in circulation. BMW would continue to release U-series pickup trucks all the way through the U5, basing the designs loosely off of the concurrently-releasing 5 series cars of the time. The latest model in the series is the 2025 BMW UX, a special one-off anniversary model created to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the BMW U series. It features all the modern fixings of a standard pickup of the time, but with styling cues taken from the 80's, where it all began.

* N1 - Bucharest – ended up using this for the WinterIron Bingo Round Robin - November 2023, which posted this morning. It’s an established WinterIron relationship fic where Bucky is working with a therapist and getting some guff from Steve about it. My part came in at 361 words.

* G4 - AU: College Students – Expanding on Beaten to the Punch with a bit of backstory on Bucky and Tony to fit with this square. It’s coming in at 408 words and am targeting it to post next Wednesday as a cross over with my WFB Volunteering Together square.

* A4 - Fairy Tale Curse - this seems custom-made for a continuation of Beyond the Beast😁 Nothing written yet, other than some Vague Ideas.

I’ve got sixteen fills, four WIPs, and a couple more Vague ideas.

* N5 - AU: Multiple Identities - Posted The Secrets We Keep to Tumblr on Friday. It’s a first person alternating POV ficlet with mutual pining (and secret identity) Stony. It came in at 314 words and will get posted to Ao3 before the event ends.

* Y4 - AU: Soulmates - @chrissihr posted a cool idea about Animated soulmarks, where only your SM sees your mark move - may try to do something with this!
