TVD S5 EP11&12 (mostly a rant about Tyler and Caroline)
Tumblr media
I'm not even gonna talk about the first 10 episodes, Silas was annoying AF I'm glad he's dead. Also, Katherine as a human was hilarious.
Tyler deserved better. I said it. I never really understood the Tyler hate. Like, yeah he was a douche in S1 but if we're judging him by his S1 personality shouldn't we all hate Caroline by that logic? Cause she was kind of a bitch in S1.
Caroline sleeping with Klaus...yeah no I don't even know what to say. I knew it was coming, just didn't know when. It was dumb and just didn't really make any sense to me. I was never really on board with them, to begin with.
Why did Klaus come back to MF in the first place? To see Katherine dying? Anyways... It always felt to me like Klaus was being really pushy and trying to flirt with Care when she was obviously not into it (she seemed pretty content and happy with Tyler)
Like sir, you have a whole ass baby on the way (idk what happened with that storyline cause the Mikaelsons went to New Orleans and I'm not watching TO rn) and you're here in MF trying to hook up with a girl who repeatedly told you she wasn't interested. Dare i say, you look kind of pathetic.
Tyler my boy, you deserve better, you really do. And then, when he hears Care talking to a Katherine-possessed Elena about Klaus he is obviously heartbroken.
Look, Care, I like you, I really do, but I can't defend you on this one. It's preposterous to me that she's the one acting all shocked when Tyler gets upset. Like, you slept with the man who ruined his life, who killed your best friend's aunt (RIP Jenna you will always be missed), and oh, killed his mother! (RIP Carol you were innocent)
Also, this might just be me, but did everyone forget that Klaus was gonna kill Care in the sacrifice ritual thing back in S2? Maybe I'm just really bad at letting things go but I would never get over that? Like I would never want to be friends let alone anything more with a person who brought so much suffering to me and my friends.
You almost died because of him, twice! Damn it Caroline, where are your morals!?
Call it a moment of weakness I guess, but still, it was hella stupid. And then Stefan defends Caroline? Like no don't defend her she did a stupid thing!
Tyler is my guy and I like him. I understand not liking his character but you cannot seriously say that he was in the wrong in this situation. He had every right to be upset. And Caroline was stupid for what she did. Maybe it's because Klaus said "You'll never see me again" so she thought "fuck it, I might as well since he'll be gone for good" but still dumb af
The show has been off the rails since S4 it can only be worse from here lol

“Caroline deserves better than someone who hates Klaus more than he loves her.” More like Tyler deserves better than someone who makes him choose between their relationship and getting his agency back, along with fucking said guy who took away his agency, not even giving him the decency of having space to process, and telling to get over it or get out of her life.

Scott Mccall isn't White!
Its crazy that after all these years, this is something that still needs to he said, but here we are.
For context, I've been watching a mutual of mine interact with people who just don't like the character of Scott, and the racism in how they handle his character being pointed out to them, only for them to wave it away because they view him as white. You can read that "conversation" here.
I didn't get involved, mostly because my mutual has it covered, but also because its like arguing with a brick wall. It doesn't matter what facts you show them, or how gently you explain that racism isn't just throwing out slurs to people of color, they simply refuse to listen. Hell, one of them has flat out admitted before that she only jumps on our posts to argue because she likes the attention.
But this whole thing just reminds me of something I've talked about before, with how Tyler Lockwood was viewed on The Vampire Diaries.
Like Scott, the character of Tyler Lockwood was a werewolf on a popular teen drama show, one that started a little less than two years before Teen Wolf, and who was played by Michael Trevino. And like Scott, there were people who looked at this brown skinned actor and said to themselves, "he's white", usually in an attempt to justify the obnoxious amount of vitriol they throw at the character and actor for being "in the way of their ship". (Isn't it amazing how almost all of these problems find their way back to shipping on some way?)
The sad thing is, also like Scott, the same justification is used to assert the whiteness of his character. That being the parents.
Now, I don't know what the behind-the-scenes production team was thinking when they did the casting, but for some reason, for both Scott and Tyler, they cast white people to play the parents of kids that were clearly not white. But that's not the real issue here. The issue is, that in order to justify their bias against these characters, these fans look to supporting cast members as "evidence". It doesn't matter that Posey and Trevino are Latino, and actual starring cast members (hell, Posey was the lead of his show!), all that matters is that the parents who don't even get half the screen time of their children are white.
This is just another clear example of fandoms prioritizing whiteness over any of the characters of color. Scott and Tyler are front and center and actual key members of the plots for both shows (less so for Tyler Lockwood) and yet the fans look right past them to the white side characters who wouldn't be there at all if it weren't for their children.
And I know that they know what they're doing. How could they not? They embrace all the negative Latino stereotypes for these characters, while simultaneously claiming they thought they were white, all while clinging to headcanons about the Hales being Native because of Derek's (Tyler Hoechlin) cheekbones or that Klaus (Joseph Morgan) was half Native American because of his mom's affair - something they clung to even after we met Klaus' very white father, Ansel.
What makes the whole situation worse is that its only Tyler's and Michael's characters that get this treatment. Fandom had no trouble recognizing characters like Theo or Hayden or Bonnie as characters of color. Yes, Bonnie was treated abysmally by both the production and the fandom, but there was never an attempt to wave aside that bile by saying "she's not black enough."
Can someone explain it to me? Why is it just the Latino main characters that get this treatment?
To conclude, I'll state again what I said above, Scott McCall (and Tyler Lockwood) is not white! And any attempt to ignore that or pretend he's not a character of color is just blatant racism.

tyler literally broke every bone in his body again and again so that he could break the sire bond. FOR CAROLINE. Tyler Lockwood deserved better. I can’t scream it loud enough. I hate the shit he gets because he had the audacity to defy Klaus. TYLER DEFENSE SQUAD FOR LIFE.

Stefan: wants revenge on Klaus for the shit he pulled on him, even going as far as to almost drive the love of his life off of Wickery Bridge. Knowing that that her parents almost died and where she almost died.
Fandom: Stefan has every right to hate Klaus!!! He didn’t actually do it!!! His humanity was off (it was on and yes he was dealing with the guilt and pain, but I’m not gonna go dismiss my baby girl’s trauma either).
Tyler: wants revenge on Klaus for killing him, forcing him into becoming a hybrid, making him into his slave, forced him to bite his gf, killed his mother (aka his last living family member) because Tyler dared to save innocent hybrids from being sired, killed his pack, and drove him out of his hometown. Tearfully leaves because while he loves Caroline, he doesn’t want to live under a psychopath’s thumb and wants justice. Keep in mind that he didn’t abuse Caroline in the process unlike something a certain Salvatore brother did to the love of his life.
Fandom: T-Tyler is such a dick! He chose revenge over Caroline! He hates Klaus more than he loves Caroline! How dare he not grieve the way his girlfriend wanted him to! Klaus/Stefan would never!

Caroline preaching about “people doing terrible things are just terrible people”, calling out Elena for dating Damon, and saying that she’s the “good vampire”. Yet gets mad Tyler tells her that people expect more from her. Like girl, what’d you expect?

Tyler: leaves to avenge his mother and get his freedom back, had a hard time walking out, but knew he needed to put his mental health first.
Fandom: OMG TYLER IS SUCH AN ASSHOLE. HE CHOSE REVENGE OVER HER.
Klaus: chooses Caroline over “revenge” aka not torturing the girl who’s family he murdered because she saved her own life, STABBED Caroline with a lamp and wouldn’t heal her until she and Tyler had to plead with him.
Fandom: OMG KLAUS IS THE ONLY ONE WHO PUT CAROLINE FIRST. SHE NEEDS TO GO TO NOLA TO BE WITH HIM.

I find it fucking hilarious when I hear some Stefan stans say Tyler slut shamed Caroline. And in the same breath…cheer and feel sympathy for their boy Stefan when he does to Elena what they claim Tyler did to Caroline. Even going as far as to still say that Stefan deserves better than Elena and call her a bitch for something that she did while sired to Damon. At that point he knew about the effects. Caroline even mentioned to Stefan in 4x08 that Elena’s singular burning desire would be to make Damon happy. So no, Stefan does not deserve better than Elena.

Exact same thing happens with Stiles Stilinski, Peter Hale and Derek Hale (to a slightly lesser extent). Stans swear they love them but proceed to ignore their flaws and ignore 90% of canon. They even give Stiles Scott's personality in most fic, give Peter Deaton's role while saying Deaton is an evil bastard, froze Derek in his season 1-2 development and made him even *more* of a brooding caricature. Like, sis, at that point, just make OCs lol
Yeah. I never understood that whole phenomenon.
You go into a fandom and see characters like Stiles, or Tony Stark, or Kylo Ren, or Snape and Draco or Peter and Derek or virtually any conventionally attractive white man in a show/movie/book/comic/etc. and they're all presented as these uwu soft boys with horrible backstories, often times drastically exaggerated or even outright fabricated, that are usesld as an excuse for every bad thing, or even mildly inconvenient, they do so that we as the audience know that its "not their fault".
But then you go an actually engage with the canon source material and they're nothing like how the fandom portrays them.
I am so lucky that I had actually watched Teen Wolf before I ventured into the fandom, because if it had been the other way around, I'd have been confused as to why Scott seemsd to be the center of the show and not Stiles, or why the grumpy looking muscle man was constantly putting the moves on a teenager.
Hell, even having watched the show first I was thrown off because you go into fandom and the characters are nothing like their canon counterparts. The worst was the fandom literally stripping everything about Scott that made him Scott and just draping it over Stiles in a totally unsubtle attempt to let everyone know who they thought should be the real protagonist of the show.
The "Stiles in Scott's clothes" trope that permeated the fandom was particularly obnoxious to me because these are the same fans (usually Sterek shippers) who go out of their way to let you know they the reason they didn't like Scott was because he was "so boring". They don't like how he always has to be the good guy in every situation and he should be darker and blah blah blah. But then these very same people turn around and give all of the attributes they just claimed to hate about Scott and bedazzle Stiles with him before singing his praises. The Stiles of canon is this loud, brash, sarcastic smartass who has an inability to shut his mouth even in the the direst of situations, but the Stiles of fanon is this uwu soft boy who speaks five languages and cooks for his poor dad while struggling with his own eating disorder while being unable to sleep because of his ADHD and always having to do all the research for everyone and juggling all of his advanced classes and struggling with his attraction to an older guy while dealing with "Scott's homophobia" and.... it just goes on and on and on.
They go out of their way to create this fantastical character that doesn't at all resemble the canon Stiles in any capacity except for physical appearance, and even then that's suspect, because while Dylan O'Brien is six foot tall and decently built, the fanon version of Stiles is this perpetually smol child who wears skinny jeans and is dwarfed by Derek.
This just goes to further show that most of them view Stiles as some sort of self-insert character, which is made even weirder by the fact that so many of them are women (not all of them, but most of them). They twist canon so much to create these little scenarios for whatever fantasy they've concocted in their head that at some point the question has to be asked of not only whether or not they've actually watched the show, but if they don't enjoy anything about it that actually happens, then why are they so invested in it. It costs literally nothing to just create one's own original characters where they can say "hey, I picture this character as being played by Dylan O'Brien".
And this way, they can create their elaborate fantasies without going out of their way to twist canon and try to paint Stiles as a saint and Scott as a devil. The racist implications aside, this way they could stop erasing the character of Scott from his own narrative and maybe stop trying to smear Posey at every opportunity, or sending death threats, and all the other horrible stuff they've flung his way as if under the impression that if Tyler's doing well, then somehow that means Dylan isn't.
And that's just Teen Wolf!
How many shows or movies or comics have devolved into this giant fandom mess because of contradicting opinions regarding characters in canon and then the fanon versions that large parts of the fandom prefer? How many fandoms have devolved into a civil war because of a deliberate misappropriation of a character or characters?
I've watched as Tyler Lockwood was painted as a vicious animal in the TVD fandom so that they could prop up Klaus and make Klaroline more plausible. I've watched as Tony stans have bent over backwards to absolve Tony of every bad thing he's ever done, either intentionally or through negligence, while simultaneously condemning Steve as some kind of imperialist warlord because he wears a costume with the American flag on it. I've watched as Star Wars "fans" have stripped Finn of his entire identity - his backstory as a brainwashed child in the First Order, his exceptional Force-sensitivity, his relationships with Rey and Han - and give it all to Kylo Ren to create this Ben Solo persona.
This happens in every fandom in some form or another.
And I know someone must be reading this asking themselves what all this has to do with the original ask, and while I might have gotten a little sidetracked, the point is right there. So much of fandom discourse happens because there are those vocal members of said fandom that go out of their way to antagonize those who actually like the canon material, trying to push their fanon as what really happens, and it always devolves into this back and forth that generally ruins the enjoyment that most people get out of it.
It's a question that after all my years in fandom I still can't answer: if anyone dislikes a particular show or book or movie or whatever, to the point that they completely disregard canon, then what about it keeps them there? That's bordering on hate-watching and that sounds so sad.

Why is it I always seem to find myself in small fandoms constantly barraged by hate? Do I intentionally go looking for them? Or do I just stumble across them in some horrible twist of fate?
I mean... even just character fandoms. I'm always drawn to the one character that when I go into the fandom I find that so many people hate them.
