Jonathan Eig was deep in the Duke University archives researching his new biography of Martin Luther King Jr. when he made an alarming discovery: King’s harshest and most famous criticism of Malcolm X, in which he accused his fellow civil rights leader of “fiery, demagogic oratory,” appears to have been fabricated.

“I think its historic reverberations are huge,” Eig told The Washington Post. “We’ve been teaching people for decades, for generations, that King had this harsh criticism of Malcolm X, and it’s just not true.”

The quote came from a January 1965 Playboy interview with author Alex Haley, a then-43-year-old Black journalist, and was the longest published interview King ever did. Because of the severity of King’s criticism, it has been repeated countless times, cast as a dividing line between King and Malcolm X. The new revelation “shows that King was much more open-minded about Malcolm than we’ve tended to portray him,” Eig said.

Haley’s legacy has been tarnished by accusations of plagiarism and historical inaccuracy in his most famous book, “Roots,” but this latest finding could open up more of his work to criticism, especially “The Autobiography of Malcolm X: As Told to Alex Haley” — released nine months after Malcolm X’s assassination in 1965.

Malcolm X, a member of the Nation of Islam, had frequently attacked King and his commitment to nonviolence, going so far as to call King a “modern Uncle Tom.” But his criticism often had “strategic purposes,” Eig said.

In acting as “a foil” to King, his message had more value to the media. “King saw value in being a foil to Malcolm sometimes, too. But I think at their core they had a lot in common. They certainly shared a lot of the same goals,” Eig said.

Eig, who previously wrote acclaimed biographies of Muhammad Ali and Lou Gehrig, said he found the fabrication in the course of his standard book research for “King: A Life,” due out May 16. When a subject has given a long interview, he’ll look through the archives of the journalist who conducted it, hoping to find notes or tapes with previously unpublished anecdotes.

He did not find a recording of Haley’s interview with King in the Haley archives at Duke, but he did find what appears to be an unedited transcript of the full interview, likely typed by a secretary straight from a recording, Eig said. Eig provided The Post with a copy of the transcript.

On page 60 of the 84-pagedocument, Haley asks, “Dr. King, would you care to comment upon the articulate former Black Muslim, Malcolm X?”

King responds: “I have met Malcolm X, but circumstances didn’t enable me to talk with him for more than a minute. I totally disagree with many of his political and philosophical views, as I understand them. He is very articulate, as you say. I don’t want to seem to sound as if I feel so self-righteous, or absolutist, that I think I have the only truth, the only way. Maybe he does have some of the answer. But I know that I have so often felt that I wished that he would talk less of violence, because I don’t think that violence can solve our problem. And in his litany of expressing the despair of the Negro, without offering a positive, creative approach, I think that he falls into a rut sometimes.”

That is not how King’s response appeared in the published interview. While the top part is nearly identical with the transcript, it ended in Playboy like this: “And in his litany of articulating the despair of the Negro without offering any positive, creative alternative,I feel that Malcolm has done himself and our people a great disservice. Fiery, demagogic oratory in the black ghettos, urging Negroes to arm themselves and prepare to engage in violence, as he has done, can reap nothing but grief.”

Some of the phrases added to King’s answer appear to be taken significantly out of context, while others appear to be fabricated:

Eig has shared this discovery with a number of King scholars, and the changes “jumped out” to them as “a real fraud,” Eig said. “They’re like, ‘Oh my God, I’ve been teaching that to my students for years,’ and now they have to rethink it,” Eig said.

You thought that was weird but he first checked to make sure you were feeling alright. “Do you think I can borrow some clothes? Wild that racist fandom simultaneously wants to portray the Hales as the elite, superior, "pure blooded" born werewolves who have a divine right to rule the territory and they're so much more knowledgeable and wise and stronger and richer, a powerful noble lineage the show "should" center on..... yet also, they are an allegory for a marginalized people + Scott is a "colonizer" and "interloper" of werewolf culture even though Peter forced him into it. A brown Latino, working class teen is somehow the oppressor of this wealthy, ancient (white) family

Here’s the thing.  Canonically, there was very little difference between born wolves and bitten wolves.  The only thing they came out and said was that born wolves have an easier time controlling themselves.   Noshiko said it in The Fox and the Wolf (3x20) and De-aged Derek said it in 117 (4x02).  Three was also a cut scene in Fireflies (3x03) where Derek said that Boyd was more dangerous because Cora might be able to control herself better..  

There is seemingly little status difference between Born and Bitten wolves.  Peter never included Scott being Bitten in his litany of superiority.   We never learn anything about the Alpha Pack’s status.  We never learned anything about the Primal’s status.  The three wolves from the Ito Pack we know about were two Born wolves taken in by Satomi.  Satomi and Talia were friends, who had tea together.  Derek and Deaton spoke of Satomi with reverence.

Of course, Derek didn’t know if he could train a Bitten wolf, but there was no implication that it was because Bitten wolves were inferior.  And there was the lie -- cribbed from Hollywood werewolf lore -- that a Bitten Wolf could be cured by killing the one who bit you.  And yes, it was a lie manipulated by Derek, who was oh-so-knowledgeable until he happened to remember something (which later turned out to be completely false) that would require Scott to do exactly what Derek wanted him to do.

Then where does the idea that these Born Wolves, superior in every way, are oppressed by a Bitten Wolf who won’t submit come from?   Or to put it another way, where do they get the idea that the clearly master race can be oppressed by degenerate lower races.  

For those who may miss the subtlety, I’m drawing a direct line from fandom’s obsession with born wolves to eugenics-based nonsense and Nazi racial-superiority politics.  For those of you who haven’t read your history recently, Hitler’s entire rise to power was based on this type of oppression fantasy: that the superior Aryan race was being deprived of their proper position by filthy Jews and Roma and Poles and black people.  

How many times have you seen the argument that Scott ‘took’ the legacy of the Hales from them?  Even this morning, I read this story-- untagged, of course:

He looked down at Scott who was still out cold on the floor. He didn’t feel any remorse in removing the Alpha spark from his former best friend. It had been what was right. Scott was no True Alpha, he wasn’t an Alpha at all, he lacked the Alpha material, and was too unconcerned with his pack and the town. Too much into his own pleasures and whims. Talia had been right when she’d told Derek that Stiles had been his Alpha. He was going to enjoy giving that responsibility to someone who was both experienced and had the heart and mind for it. Well to sometwo.

You see that?  Stiles has made the determination that Scott is not worthy of the alpha power and takes it from him.   You see, the people he believes are worthy are Talia and Derek.   The born wolves have the right to rule, the right to rise, no matter what they do or don’t do, and that means they have the authority to take from those who are lesser then they are.

It’s so eerie often parts of the fandom justify hatred of Scott and hurting, enslaving, killing Scott and use the same language and motivations of the seizure of the Sudetenland.  They describe Scott as sexually voracious, stupid, uneducated, and unworthy.   

It’s eerie, but not unprecedented.  This is an old ghost applied to a trivial purpose, but still possessing the same disgusting allure.

If Stiles is ~so much more interesting~ as this rabid anon claims, why give him Scott's personality and traits? Why elevate him to a BAMF!Spark in most fics? Why hyper focus on his Polish heritage to make him more interesting? Why is the real Stiles rarely ever represented in the thousands of fanfictions despite the claims to love him so much?

Yeah, that's one of the things I never understood as well.

Stiles was an interesting character by himself. Its something I've talked about before, but Stiles was a unique part of a unique pack. He wasn't a werewolf or a kitsune or a banshee, or hell, even a hunter. He was just a regular human who ran with all of these supernatural creatures and highly trained individuals, and he was never left behind.

Given fandom's ability to make mountains out of molehills, that alone is enough to create entire fandom metas on. Here is a character who saw that his best friend was being dragged into a world that he didn't understand, into a war he he didn't have any part of, and he refused to leave his side, even though as only a human he was in more danger than almost anyone else. Add to that his father being the sheriff, which seemed to influence his own detective skills and the fact that he fought against the Nogitsune's possession and his own inner "void" and there's a lot there to talk about and examine.

Which is why it's always baffled me why certain fans of this character then go about giving him everyone else's traits. You go into fandom and the fanon version of Stiles is the "pack mom", all compassionate and caring and trying to look out for everyone, which are actually characteristics of Scott. The fanon version of Stiles is often a better Hunter than the actual Hunters on the show, despite their years (or even decades) of training. Fanon Stiles is an academic genius, enough to overshadow Lydia. And that's not even getting into the whole conversation around the whole "spark" situation and how they wanted him to be a powerful magician on top of everything else they piled on this character.

I talk a lot about how Scott was the lead of the show, the hero-protagonist, the titular Teen Wolf, but each member of the pack, or their allies, had a role to play. Each of them had a spotlight that shone on them throughout their run on the show, which is why it baffles me that certain fans decided that every spotlight needed to be on Stiles and no one else.

The Asshole Anon in particular has said to me, multiple times, whenever I talk about Scott being the lead of the show, that Teen Wolf was "an ensemble show", but then they turn around and try to make this "ensemble show" all about Stiles.

At the end of the day, it just proves that a lot of these people, the ones who hype up Stiles, don't even actually like him as he appeared in canon. Because if they did, why dress him up in the attributes of other characters?

nothing! this is just going back to that series of posts i made like a year or two ago where i was like white self-proclaimed music people on tumblr don't know any musicians of color unless they can strip them of context and superficially compare them to white artists (re: lizzo, janelle monae, twigs, and mitski and now rina, imma put rina in there) AS WELL as all of my posts about people fundamentally misunderstanding hozier's aesthetics, lyrics, genre, and musical politics. neverrrrr in my life would i call tamino "brown hozier" but i too have seen it and it frustrates me. it frustrates me as a person of color because i know white people won't give tamino a chance unless they have a white reference point to jump off of for him. but it also frustrates me as a hozier fan because, again, white hozier fans are refusing to engage with the influences and references in his music in a constructive and appreciative way. like you said on your post, it's about being a fan of fandom and nothing more. it is black fucking music month, i'm not going to ask you people to leave tamino alone and listen to rhiannon giddens again. if you're a hozier fan who wants to listen to more artists of color just look at who he follows on instagram instead of insulting tamino by reducing him to being barely similar to a white dude... Christ....

Not a request but imagine Big Booty!Bellamy's backshots sounding like bongos. I'm talking their neighbors can hear whenever they're going at it. The sound just echoing.

Bellamy’s backshots are the wildest things to ever be heard. Not only does the noise of Bellamy’s ass clapping echo throughout the bedroom but it also can be heard in the entire apartment. The sloppy slapping can even be heard through the walls where your neighbors can even hear it.

M/N is so oblivious to the fact that the neighbors can hear it because every noise complaint letter they’ve taped to the door ends up being snatched up and shredded by Bellamy. M/N is easily embarrassed at things, so Bellamy just knows that if M/N finding out about the neighbors hearing them then he’d be completely mortified.

One time Bellamy even went as far to play the song bongos in the background and makes M/N fuck him to the beat of the song.

Ultimately no matter what they do, the sound of skin slapping against skin and the headboard of the bed slamming against the wall will always get heard by everyone around. Bellamy just simply dosent give a shit about how loud you two are, if the neighbors don’t like it then they can simply just plug their ears at night or just simply get use to it.

Bellamy just loves knowing the fact that those jealous neighbors can hear every slap and every clap he gets from his booty addicted boyfriend. If they have a problem with it so bad then they can speak to Bellamy himself about it.

The Brown Bomber is a sweetly innocent, gay superhero. Diva Flambé Touché? She’s the mysterious, wise lesbian who befriends him. Together, this duo has been saving the world since the 1970s and ’80s—the first of their kind when they busted out back then, into a comics landscape dominated by straight, white superheroes. And they owe their existence to local illustrator, activist, and real-life superhero Rupert Kinnard.

Some changemakers helm nonprofits or foundations; Kinnard is less likely to be found in the boardroom than in a living room, striking up a necessary conversation or connecting people. The sexagenarian paraplegic who DJs in his spare time has been living diversity and inclusion since long before they became buzzwords, shaping the state’s gay rights movement along the way.

Damn, anon is Big Mad that Derek Hale loves Scott McCall like a brother and never held any grudge against him and the script even saying Derek's expression was one of respect. Derek never expressed anger about it and yet they call themselves angry on his behalf

One of the best relationships in Teen Wolf is that of Scott McCall and Derek Hale.

We saw them work, and work hard, to get from that first gif to the second. It wasn’t easy and the show never made it appear like it was.

Starting off as adversaries they became two people (two men) who could openly show their affection to one another. Not in a romantic way, but simply because they cared about one another.

The fact is that isn’t as common, even today, as some people think. 

We saw Scott risk his life to save Derek. We saw that he was willing to let himself die over the pain and guilt of losing him.

We got this quote 

"You came back for Beacon Hills?"

"No. I came back for you."

We heard Tyler Hoechlin say that one of the biggest disappointments was that a scene between him and Tyler Posey where the character of Scott hears that Derek may die and cries at the thought was cut.

That is how much Derek had come to mean to him.

It was a fleshed-out journey and one fandom would burst at the seams for.

Except they despise the fact that it was Scott and not another character.

 It wasn’t the relationship that fandom wanted to see grow and the fact that Derek cared so much about a character they hate burns them.

I already hear the choir going “Scott never paid for the ways he hurt Derek” While utterly ignoring the way Derek hurt Scott, but I digress.

The truth is Derek and Scott moved past the ways they hurt one another and managed to be two people who deeply cared about one another.

They found their own way to go beyond the hurt and fandom hates it because they wanted Scott to pay.

They wanted him to pay through pain and through the loss of his status. They wanted Derek to take back what they feel Scott stole from him.

They didn’t get that so they spent years tearing apart the relationship.

Taking their moments and removing Scott to replace with Stiles.

They called Derek post-season 2 “pod Derek” because “their” Derek is forever the brooding bad boy who can only be tamed by the love of another white man.

This Derek who no longer cares about power and who doesn’t need to use violence to get people to submit is not what they signed up for.

And if he were to change it had to be Stiles who made him.

Not Scott who about Peter said to Derek 

“Your best ally has always been anger, Derek, but what you lack most is a heart. That's why you've always known that you need Scott more than anyone.”

That wasn’t the story they signed up for, but it’s the story they got.

So they troll inboxes and make posts to say that Scott was really a villain and the bond they had was fraudulent.

But it wasn't.

Not to the show.

Not to the actors

Not to the fans who loved to see their journey.
