Hobie x Reader Isekai fic where the reader (me) is a Spider-man meta-analysis writer and they fall into the ATSV universe.

They meet Hobie and are completely starstruck, unable to speak. Flabbergasted. Uhh okay imma just do the intro "Hi, My name's Hobie, Hobie Brown. I was bitten by a-"

Everyone thinks they're weird as fuck, but Gwenpoole (and other Nexus beings) are taught about at The Society at least, so it's not a mystery why they are the way they are.

But they're just SO META

They're basically bouncing and they tell Hobie 'OMG, your like my favorite superhero. I write about you ALL THE TIME- Ignore the OC folder'

Hobies like 'I'm not a hero-'

All of a sudden there's this huge Hobie groupie fan in the group that knows everything about them and their trauma 😭😭

The reader sees Gwen and is like '.......I know this isn't my place but I've read through the scene between you and your dad and I have some comments I'd like to make. I can leave out the ones where I wish him death.'

There's even a scene like this one between Miles and Gwen

Where Hobie is like 'oi this your analysis book lemme see-' only to open to dozens of pages of x-reader fics and Hobie x OC drawings

And reader is like

'Uh.... I ain't write that. I don't know how that got in there. That's not even my handwriting. I found that notebook actually 😭😭'

Meanwhile Hobies like 'Christ - how much time do you have on your hands 🤨🤔'

'....Is it that bad?'

'Oh I ain't say it was bad. Could use a some work though. Actually- *takes out Noir's reading glasses (which he stole) from his pocket because he's not gonna stand here and judge a book by its cover*'

Of course Hobie still reads the x-reader cause he's a cocky bastard.

And then he returns said fics covered in red pen and notes of 'I wouldn't do that-' or 'actually you should add this. This would be better.' or even 'Lemme do it. That other shite you wrote don't make no sense'

BASICALLY HELPING CONSTRUCT FICS ABOUT HIMSELF. Simply because he finds the concept hilarious.

He gets to the smut and he's like "How easy do you lot think I am? Think you can have a pass at me, you must be taking the fucking piss-" just ranting and raving as he STILL READS IT

Sitting there with a cup of tea reading smut of himself and covering it in red pen like it's the mornings crossword 😭😭

The crew eventually realize that the readers power of trope analysis crosses over and it's SO USEFUL

All they need to do is get reader in front of Miguel and reader gives him a heartfelt reading and connection of his trauma that equals the culmination of ten years of therapy

They're like 'i know this is all an act Miguel. I know this is all an act to cover up the crushing feeling of chaos and helplessness that comes from canon. And really, all of this is just a mirror - you wanting to control how things 'should be' because there were so many things you went through that you think shouldn't have. But those moments are apart of you-'

Miguel's likes 'WAIT WOAH STOP TALKING'

They start bringing up Gabriel and Xina and shit from the comics.

Everyone's like 'Who the hell is Gabriel-" meanwhile Miguel is on the floor sobbing going 'mi hermano. mi hermano pequeno 😭😭😭'

And it ends with them all hugging Miguel after this person just read him for filth using the power of Isekai Canon Knowledge

I'm having TOO MUCH FUN WITH THIS

In the end Reader and Hobie become best friends because they both stand out so much in other universes and both take nothing entirely serious.

Plus they're both really perceptive and nosey and good at reading people so sometimes they see some subtle shit go down and they look at each other like

"We minding our business~ 😩🎶🗣️ we ain't gon say shit~ We gon mind our goddamn business 🎤🎸🔈'

3DOLC x ROE!

I'm modifying this challenge according to my own personal manifestation rules. Instead of "manifesting" I am doing a concentrated "deep focus" on my life, purely focusing on my 4D experience rather than paying mind to my 3D mirror experience. I'm basically going to do a 3-day-(or less)-long meditation on my living reality.

If at the end of this "meditation" I return to my mirror and see that it's matching my 4D, then I know I have "succeeded".

My reality which I'll be awareness-ing on (i'll call "desires" traits instead):

My dream (and current) body (including 6'4 height, ideal face, toned body, model visuals, my ideal male body)

Being the hottest guy ever seen

10 million dollars in my bank account

Dream family (supportive, non-toxic or emotionally unstable, etc)

My sibling having their desired body

Immune to all allergens

Healed vision, healed ear

Dream car (and a license)

Walkable town that's much cuter, social and has more charm (this God does not allow for car-dependent suburbs smh)

Self confidence and dream personality

Always have been the top student at school and the school's 'prince' (i read too many exaggerated manhwas)

My crush falling in love with me (they've got the highest standards i swear lol)

Everything in my amazon cart to have been bought and sent for me

Heightened intelligence, to the level of the top student in my corner of the country

Studying isn't stressful or time consuming for me, I have the time to balance between engineering and drawing out my comic

Bringing disco back (this is not ENTIRELY a joke)

Affirmations & Focus: Self-diagnosed here, but pretty sure my ADHD brain jumps between too many things. So my affirmations are short and straightforward and looped over and over so I naturally start to branch out to different thoughts about the topic. ok I just read y'all's comments and who says tintin is not popular in america or even tintin is considered unpopular ?girl wth that's not true at all,I can tell you literally more than 50% of tintin fanpages in Instagram is american,you just write his hashtag on insta and you'll see plenty of fanarts or books or videos related to him or even new written comics which have the herge's style about tintin that all are american,in Google says that tintin is literally in top 3 of most famous and successful comics in both 20 and 21 century so it's highly popular in every place of the world,as far as I know there are some tintin paintings in some places in america like museum or smth that's so huge and popular so I just wanted to make this clear buddy love you 🤏🏻

Glad to know that, nonnie! I am happy Americans love Tintin too and yes it's a fact The Adventures Of Tintin is considered a legend in the comic history worldwide, you have so many people writing essays about it and its creator or simply fans.

Our point, that has somehow been misunderstood, is that in America Tintin and other bande designee comics aren't that popular comparing to other comics, like the American ones of course and Japanese ones. Additionally, there has been no new content since Herge died so that would naturally lead to a comic being less famous. Yet, Tintin remains popular so that's a big thing and I'm glad the series keeps gaining more fans because, well, it deserves it and following Tintin other comics of this style and era can get more recognition too.

The Adventures Of Tintin is a unique case because, although, as you're saying, it is famous and has been recognized for its worth, at the same time you don't see people talking about it much or many haven't even heard of it. And if it was big in America, for sure it would rise its popularity all over the world (even though it is famous already in many parts of the world already but that's another issue about how the media and culture are American centric and anyway I'm not an expert to talk about it). Consider I am from a European country and it's hard to find the comics or products, despite the fact we had dubbed the cartoon series and many people grew up watching it.

It could be because of Tintinimaginatio's policy and tactics, it could be because there's no new Tintin content, it could be because of whatever but the fact remains that if you're fan of Tintin you have the feeling that there are a few of you, although there are many people who love Tintin all over the world. Maybe the tendency to treat the series like a museum exhibit or an old artwork has something to do with it. I can't say for sure why this happens.

Anyway I don't doubt there are American fans or that the series is recognized in America, I am just wondering how many people of the general audience there know the series and how much it is talked about when the topic of interest is comics in general.

anywhos, the fam’s all separate doing their own things until Gabby summons them all. Logan does not like Jonathan lol, ok i like that; dad doesn't like the dog you go while he was dead is funny. but Gabby wants to do some family bonding via a road trip; i can get behind that. Logan doesn’t like being called old, Laura thinks fighting bad guys is enough family bonding time (wth? no she wouldn’t), and Daken is actually all for indulging his little sister which is sweet...even though he does brush off her near non-respawning too easily. and yeah no, i don’t buy Laura and Daken not being instantly into the idea of having non-fighting time family memories while Logan is the only one who is; those kids were both made to be weapons, they’ve only ever wanted to be normal kids, why wouldn’t they jump at this if they hadn’t thought of it themselves to begin with. why can no one write them correctly anymore, they’re all just mini-Logans these days.

so Logan avoids hitting a deer in the road, so they finally realize Jonathan is missing. they head back, figure out what happened, google where the family went, so they drive to Vegas. this part was really short it seemed.

we start off seeing how Jonathan was kidnapped; he was roofied. alright then. Jonathan makes friends with a honey badger he can talk to and plans to escape, while the fam arrives and does their own investigating.

hehe Deadpool easter egg since it was Wade who got helped Gabby get Jonathan.

oh creepy, the kidnapper family are groupies. boy, Logan gets a lot of stuff sold on the black market like all the time; if the guy just properly merchandised himself all his kids would have trust funds forever (since you know, long life spans)

oh c’mon! how’d they get taken out so easily and quickly. it took the Orphans of X months of planning to capture them before, but a couple of nobodies in the desert do it off panel??

anywhos, over all it was a cute little romp. it’s nice to see them as a family not overly edge-lordy-angsty-stupid. lately everyone seems to forget that these guys are about “the man vs the monster/weapon” and only focus on the angsty drama of fighting against the monster/weapon while forgetting that you need to highlight the struggles but also rewards of just getting to be the man, even at the simplest of times. art wise, it was also fine. so i guess this one was the middle of the other two in my triple feature readathon.

I have more men friends than women. Mainly because I've been stabbed in the back too many times by women. Most men tell you to your face, they get it off their chest, we talk it over and that's that.

Three friends have recently had birthdays. Not one of them received a gift or a cake or even a card from their significant other. WTH?? If they hadn't done something for their partner all heck would have broke loose.

In that same vein I heard a comic say after weeks of being on the road he finally got some time off. What happened his first day home? His wife gives him a "Honey Do" list. Welcome home sweetheart. He brought up the question what would a woman do if her man gave her a Honey Do list. You know we would get PO'd and the argument would start.

Ladies if we want to keep our men we need to show them the same respect and love we expect. It will not kill us to take the trash out sometimes or whatever job you think is "his". A relationship is sharing, caring, loving and sometimes doing something you'd rather not.

BTW in case you didn't realize it, I am a woman.

I don't think it hit me until today that MCU basically erased the entire bond they build up with the characters in the previous films... Like everything that made MCU peter different is all gone... He was the youngest Spidey and he literally has no one... Other variations still had their Aunt May/MJ at least... But MCU peter is completely alone... This Peter had backup... Now it's all gone too...

Like... Wth... He is still a child... Fought in two alien wars...a drone wars...lost all of his parental figures... Nothing got clarified if all that still happened or not...

We don't even know what happy remembers of May's death... Cause he was there in the car... Watching Peter mourn... Realising she is gone... What does he remember now?

We don't know... Iron spider nano tech suit is gone too... Like nanites is what helped him subdue Doc Ock first... The arc reactor reference we got by electro... The tech he used to build the cure...

And if you think about it... Even if marvel brings characters from comics that are Tony's legacy, they weren't mentored by Tony... No interaction between them... Only Peter got interactions...

Like seriously... What even is the future of Spidey then?? Just passing the mantle onto someone else? Why did they build up so many relationship among the characters then?

Here we are! What a journey, and while perhaps this season wasn't at MoM level it was REALLY good, with great new villains/allies, great little throwbacks and an awesome story! 🤩

This title really summarize my feelings so far, like, I'm seriously wondering how it will move on from now, but I do expect the outcome to be CRAZY 🤯

I never felt such conflicting emotions for a villain like I do for Kalmaar, like, he caused so much pain to Nya... but he is voiced by Giles... but he is the reason Jay is hurt... but that startle gag 😂😂😂

This type of plot twist reminds me of our early seasons. Zane sacrificing himself, Garmadon giving up his life, those moments that made me so curious and excited about the following. I have no idea what will be the outcome for this, but I can't wait to find out

With that out of the way, AMAZING SEASON 😍😍😍 I think this finale beats MoM's, just because it was really unexpected and opens up a SEA of possibilities... yeah too soon 😭

I'm still shaken, my world, they did something HUGE and I do hope it will be a good shake to the entire Ninjago plotline. Nya is "gone", we still don't know about the person behind all that vengestone, we haven't heard from Garmy in forever, there are so many good ideas out there now that they've set the ground for more 🤩🤩

Voice acting was *chef's kiss*, not only for the villain which I already stressed enough about, I think Kelly reached a new level of emotional intimacy with Nya and I'm so happy she showed her skills 💜💜

Animation is TOP, there's little to no point into saying anything else since they showed it very clearly in the latest season ☺

This was the emotional, witty and engaging writing I was looking for! Good jokes, meaningful dialogues, emotional scenes, everything was really good and I'm gonna rewatch some scenes especially for that 😍

It turned out having Maya and Ray back was kind of a distraction to fool us all 😅😅 Well played actually, and it was very cool seeing them again in any case 🙋‍♀️

And now? Jay lost his love, I have no idea if the show will work on him getting over her or hold onto her memory (thinking of Jay probably the latter, although I do think that handling the first would be an interesting idea). KAI LOST HIS SISTER 😢😢😢 I have no doubt he's gonna beat himself up for it, like he did when Zane was gone too. Everyone lost their friend, she had become such a vital part of the team and now she is not here anymore it will be hard...

They are back with the four plus one green savior formation, I sincerely don't know how I feel about that 😅 I'm always happy when we get the OGs, but this is about going on without Nya... maybe Skylor will be called? Or Pixal will be more active? That could be interesting to see, who knows 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Gosh, how are they going to handle the next season? It will have to give A LOT of answers to the millions questions we all have right now. Man I can't wait, it could be anything!!! This is a Ninjago revolution!

But if I have to mention a little complain, and I'm a fangirl so I absolutely have to, Kai didn't show much of a reaction to Nya's "departure". Okay, she didn't straight up die like in Skybound (I'm gonna fear all BOUND seasons from now on 😱), but he's her brother and he loves deeply his family. Either we're gonna see him go all out next season, or the writers really did only focus on Jaya. A tiny bit salty... but you got me a fantastic finale so I'll move on 👍

Outstanding, I'm blown away. Whenever I think I'm used to this show they do stuff like this. I'm so glad and sad you guys 😅 But mostly happy that despite everything I still get very strong emotions while I watch this long time favorite show of mine 💜💜💜

What else can I say at this point? ONTO NEXT SEASON!!! 🤩🤩🤩

I hated that wedding so bad cuz they literally recycled the one their friend put together and JUST GOT LEFT AT THE ALTAR FOR. Like Remy stealing a wedding? Cool fitting. Bringing back in the pal, who asked to be escorted out to not lose face, just for a roll call? Wth. I hated how they included Mystique: She doesn't respect Remy, never had and never will, and was always throwing a wrench in the relationship this wedding was for. Kurt should've been Rogue's only family member at the wedding.

AGREED SO FUCKING HARD

Like not only was it bad that they hijacked their friends' (Piotr and Kitty) wedding, but their friends' VERY CLEARLY JEWISH wedding! Because Kitty is JEWISH. Remy is canonically Catholic, maybe he isn't practicing much (if at all) but that's just ignoring a whole aspect of his character. But also I'm pretty sure at this point they (Remy and Rogue) were both broken up at this point so them getting back together and THEN getting married is just so fucking wild. And if you ask me, I don't think Remy would do shit like stealing an entire wedding, especially not after watching Piotr be so hurt over it. and no one should've went along with it, someone should've said "hey man Piotr literally just got left at the altar, maybe don't do that now" but no, apparently no one had common sense that day.

And I agree, Mystique shouldn't have been there, not after she manipulated Rogue for so long and harassed her and Remy constantly, even going as far as to assault Remy on multiple occasions. Kurt is probably the only family member Rogue has that isn't a piece of shit (now if only we got to see more of them in canon but maybe one day..) but I talked about this with some friends and it really, truly bothered me:

How come none of Remy's family was there?

Ik his home life was rough, but at the time he was on friendly terms with his father...so how come he didn't go to Yana like "hey can you portal me to New Orleans, I wanna snag my dad real quick". And I know why, it's because the writers didn't care about his family or his personal life outside of the x-men and just assumed no one would notice or care. I understand the found family aspect but these are also the same people who continuously distrust him, and like I said if he was friendly with people from New Orleans, wouldn't it have made sense for him to go there and bring in some of his family back home for his wedding to the person he loves???

Ugh I didn't mean to go on a whole tangent on this, but I have way too many gripes with how the wedding played out. Romy isn't my favorite ship for starters but this was just a mess to read. I'm surprised they didn't have their own wedding in their own comic, they literally just hijacked Piotr and Kitty's arc for their own.

What's ur fave episode? Or if u can't remember the episode number what was ur favorite moment. Just came across the Arlo/John fight where we first find out about John's powers and hoooooooooooo. Another bomb episode was 155 (where sera sees John fight Arlo and remi and realizes that he's joker).

And, I just realized, but unos plot is so confusing. uru has too many things going on at once, and it's not very balanced or cohesive. We have the hierarchy-is-fucked-up thread, which is what the joker act was centered around. We have the amp/deamp stuff. There's nxgen(? Is that how you spell it), spectre, ember, and if there were other corporations I've forgotten them. There's the superhero thread, where people in the low their districts were given amps, presumably being used as lab rats. (Can we talk about how that whole plot line kinda disappeared?? Like what. I wanted Valerie to be fucking exposed wth). Kuyo has not appeared even once after he helped Blyke (I'm devastated). And then that stuff about John's mom and his uncle apparently? Which I have no memory of.

I'm assuming that all the threads are once again going to come into play when they get in deeper w ember, but I'm not a fan of how it was just abruptly dropped and we started focusing entirely on John getting better and sera's new plight. I'm loving it, but at this point I've forgotten a majority of the plot that came before, and by the time it becomes relevant again nothings gonna make sense to me.

Hm…I really liked the mall episode w/ Dumbass Trio. I also really liked the bits with Sera, Arlo and Isen being detectives🍿🥤🍭🍬🍫🧋

I know this isn’t the major opinion in the fandom, but I really love the more chill episodes. Like don’t get me wrong! I LOVE the action packed episodes. However, and I know this isn’t gonna be a surprise to anyone who’s been on my blog for longer than 5 minutes, I’m such a big fan of world/character building. Like it’s so much fun to me to imagine how this fictional world works, so much so that I think a lot about it outside of what peeps ask for. So when I get more insight into how the world works in any way, I love it. I also love character building bc it helps me write them better. That and I love making characters, so seeing how other characters are portrayed and developed really gets my jams.

And yeah. I mean, the multiple plot lines isn’t exactly a bad writing device. If it’s done correctly, it’s really good at building suspense and keeping the reader/viewer engaged (like chekhov's gun). It just seems like a lot of the writers that try this writing device end up biting off more than they can chew. In my opinion, a big example of this is Avengers Endgame. Like there’s so many plot holes and it’s so rushed and there’s so many characters thrown in. I think that’s kinda what happened with UnO.

I understand it happening completely too!! I’ve done that before quite a bit bc I’ll get too excited and then add in either too many characters or too many plot lines (or both) and then I get too overwhelmed with the chaos I’ve created.

There’s a lot of characters that need developing and they have their own lives. As of the moment John and Sera (and Arlo partially) are prioritized and have been through out the entire comic. Which would be fine if they were the only main characters, but Remi, Isen and Blyke are on the promotional posters as well, which means they’re considered main characters. I mean, I don’t blame uru for doing this. All the comments are on episodes without John are about how these episodes suck bc John’s not in them and how badly people want John back.

I might be wrong, but I don’t think John’s uncle has been confirmed or anything. People think that the white haired guy with SPECTRE is John’s uncle bc he looks similar to Jane (john’s mom that’s shown during John’s suspension).

I think this season’s most likely gonna focus on SPECTRE the most with how it’s leading up, maybe some of EMBER. But yeah, it is super frustrating at times with how the story goes and how so much stuff is abandoned.

Together and Oslo

I decided to let the barns rest for a night and treat myself to a Celtic fave double-feature instead. I hadn’t seen either movie before and I ended up loving them both, not just because of the eye-candy but because I think they’re both smart, slightly different attempts at movie story-telling and that’s my thing. Here are my thoughts on them, if anyone is interested; I won’t post any big spoilers, but there are some plot details mentioned below the cut.

Together

Man that was a pleasant surprise! I didn’t expect to like a pandemic drama/comedy/romance this much, but this was excellent. Don’t get me wrong, it absolutely is about the pandemic, it gets political too, some may find it too preachy, but fuck it, some points need to be hammered home, because these times revealed atrocious misgivings in our society and people are already forgetting them again. The thing this movie very cleverly does, is tie those larger misgivings into the personal relationship between a couple that’s been on the rocks from the start and by making them tackle them, it gives us solutions for how to tackle the bigger picture in the only, very small way that we can. The solutions aren’t ideal or necessarily super healthy, but you can work with the situation if you try and they actually do try.

I loved that, I feared that this would be terribly cynical and yes, they both are arseholes at some points, but the story presents a very refreshing take on two people hating each other. Some may say realistic, I’m not quite sure it is, the critics weren’t completely wrong when they called it a bit stage-y, but I don’t see the stageyness in the setting or story, I see it in the dialogue, which is a bit… too poetic to seem natural sometimes. That’s not a criticism btw, I loved the dialogue, but it’s meant to serve a bigger narrative goal than showing us two real people fight.

This brings me to the one thing I’m not 100% sure about, the 4th wall breaks. Maybe I’m too spoilt by Fleabag, but I found this choice a little inconsistent. Sometimes they talk to you, sometimes they don’t, what is this supposed to imply? Are we a part of this or not?

Anyway, the performances were SO GOOD! Both actors (well, three, but the boy had like three sentences) were amazing, but as a fan it felt so good to see James back at the top of his game again. Don’t crucify me for this, but in some of his recent projects *cough* IT2 *cough* the good man has rather phoned it in*. He’s marvelous in this, such control over all his character’s many sides and the CHEMISTRY between them! Urgh so good. This would have fallen very flat if these two hadn’t had this energy between them, it really is a masterclass in fugitive glances and comedic reactions and damn, do I hope they get recognised for it at some awards! #GIVEJAMESHISDAMMENDBAFTA

*James phoning it in is still better than 85% of other actors, but you get my drift.

Oslo

I was surprised by this too, but for different reasons: I had read quite a few reviews of this before I saw it and I once again wonder if critics actually watch the movies they review.

It, funnily enough, is quite similar to Together, even if it’s a wholly different genre and topic. It’s a political drama, based on a play, a play on negotiations between Israel and Palestine in the 90s, super fun, light and not dry at all stuff, right?! Nonetheless, I found it incredibly captivating. Yes, it drags a teensy bit in the end, yes, a lot of it is men sitting around tables fighting about politics, but it flows incredibly well, the way this movie builds tension and resolves it again, man I loved that! Apparently the play does that even better, but well, I haven’t seen it and I loved it in the movie too.

The movie of course had the misfortune of coming out at a time the clusterfuck that is the Gaza conflict violently flared up again, but all the reviews saying it is Israel biased? Because *reads smeared antisemitic notes* Jews produced it? Wth? The character with probably the most/most impressive screen time is Ahmed Qurei, the head negotiator from the Palestinian side, he comes across as the most sympathetic person too, passionate about what his people are going through, but also determined to try and change it. Loved Salim Dau in the role and I definitely will check him out in more things. The Israeli bureaucrats are the arseholes in this and it’s pretty clearly spelled out that yes, while they have their legit reasons to hate the Palestinians, they hold all the power in the situation and they are the ones using tanks against people throwing rocks.

There’s also no white saviour in this. Ruth’s and Andrew’s characters are, as they say roughly 15 times, the facilitators, two bonkers people from Norway who serve as the lube in those talks, nothing more, the Middle Eastern guys are the main players. There’s one bit in the end that gets slightly cringe-y but even that one I read as a last attempt at “please guys, try!”. That moment I’m actually sure works better in the (longer) play btw.

The Norwegian couple aren’t painted as the heroes, they’re quite reckless and self-satisfied, well, Terje mostly is, but Mona has her moments too and I loved the dynamic between them. There was one review that said they had no chemistry and that person clearly is crazy, because they are excellent with their different energies that come together perfectly for what they’re trying to do, they’re team and you get why they work and live together. The glances they shoot each other, always watching each other, man this was good.

Lastly, the movie most certainly doesn’t claim that everything’s ok now. It’s a historical film that focusses on one moment almost 30 years ago, when people tried, tried really hard to change something for the better. Did it work? Nah, not really, the situation still is deadly and devastating, but it doesn’t change the fact that, like in Together, people took something out of the intimidatingly large context and dealt with it in smaller circles (that hold the power anyway) and that is an often-forgotten factor in changing things (Google what Corona did to politicians having a drink after work and what that did to the general political climate). I loved that message and I loved the implication of “keep trying, keep trying to find solutions” and also, very importantly “don’t let the Americans fucking touch anything” :DD.

PS: Andrew was the comic relief in this wasn’t he? Can we get him in a proper comedy now? One without war and genocide?

Somebody PLEASE Write Agathon and Pausanias’s Love Story

Recently read Beautiful One by Kerry Adrienne, for which I did a less-than-favorable review (something I rarely do). She hit my pet peeve about historicals, especially genre historicals: it’s a costume drama about modern people with modern attitudes running around in chitons.

In this case, it centers on theatre in the era of Sophokles (who’s the bad guy). One of the main characters is a playwright nicknamed “The Beautiful One.” I assume this a time-displaced reference to the famous Agathon.

But why invent people? I have yet to see an historical m/m Romance about the most famous same-sex couple of the Classical Era (and the theatre): the playwright Agathon and his lifelong lover Pausanias. Unlike Alexander and Hephaistion, there is absolutely no doubt they were lovers, and continued to be so as adults. Hence, they get the crown.

Agathon is a freakin’ GIFT to anybody who wants to write about a devoted m/m pairing and a gender-queer ancient person. No invention necessary.

Not only was he known as a talented playwright—if not-quite-Euripides-good—but he also had a rep for defiance of “proper” male behavior. By all reports, he was extremely good-looking, so much so that “Beautiful Agathon” became a cliché. (Which is why I assume the novel’s title was a bow to him.) He was also cultured and well-spoken, and much sought after in upper-class social circles. Aristophanes lampoons him in the Thesmophoriazusae (comic play) as a cross-dresser, and he’s the host of the drinking party described in Plato’s Symposium, there depicted as Aristophanes’s friend, so he must not have taken his Roasting personally. He was also friendly with Euripides, his chief rival in the theatre contests.

Yet the one really certain fact about him is his attachment to his lover Pausanias. He’s depicted with him twice in Plato’s writings, and the two of them later traveled to Macedonia after the Peloponnesian War, when Archelaos was courting artists and literati ex-pats. Euripides went to Macedonia too. Agathon is notable for writing at least one tragedy with an original storyline, not borrowed from myth (anathema!), and a couple other innovations.

In Dancing with the Lion, Agathon is Hephaistion’s great-grandfather. Being in a long-term same-sex relationship wouldn’t necessarily have prevented him from also marrying, and I totally enjoyed the humor of “beautiful Agathon” being the ancestor of “beautiful Hephaistion” (both of whom are also what we’d call, today, ‘gay’). But no offspring are actually recorded anywhere for Agathon, so historically, maybe he didn’t marry. That would be another shocker/defiance of expectation.

Anyway… why do so many m/m ancient romances seem to be Sparta-fixated? I mean, WTH? Most of them are bad too, in both plot and history. Please, I beg you, STOP already.

SO. If any of you have aspirations to write an LGBTQI historical: AGATHON. Write about Agathon (and Pausanias). Not only is it grounded in history/reality, but it could explore how Agathon gave the middle-finger to Athenian toxic masculinity that was so much a part of ancient homoerotic expectations. It really wasn’t Gaytopia back then. Agathon was a Queer Hero. Seriously.

Obviously, research would be required. Not just ancient texts that show Agathon, but stuff like Ken Dover’s Greek Homosexuality and James Davidson’s Courtesan’s and Fishcakes, plus books on the Pel War (Donald Kagan and Anton Powell are a good starting place), Athenian daily life like the British Museum site, etc. Info on the theatre. See, I’ve done some research for you!

But hey. I know a bunch of creative people read this blog.

(This is totally selfish because I’d really like to read a good novel about Agathon.)
