I don't think I'll ever get over how amazingly electric sheep is written. I've been reading a lot of PKD but sheep is by far my favourite still, and it feels kind of like an outlier because of how clearly it flows. Each scene is clean, bright, cinematic and real-time, like it is outlining a scene for a movie (really different from blade runner tho), and it's really different from how PKD novels usually are – like a dream that lingers somewhere between space and time. I'm just listening the sheep sometimes before bed and damn, the scene alone with Rachael's test that turns into attempted bribery with a twist and then reveal about the actual state of affairs and the fact that the even the owl they had offered him as a bribe wasn't actually real...the way mood constantly switches in this scene alone, holy shit, it's such an amazing one. I love love love it so much, I want to read it again, I want to study it under a microscope. I love how every character has such a distinct voice, personal motivations and a way of avoiding telling their true mind but expressing it anyway. How things are described in a perfect balance of action, dialogue, thoughts and descriptions.

It's PKD's most famous piece for a reason.

Why is it that some sincerity resonates with us in a way that makes us like and respect it and even want to get more because it feels real and raw and touches something in our soul, but other examples or sincerity resonate in a way that results only in a strong second-hand embarrassment and desire to not only turn away from it but avoid in the future. Even when it doesn't necessarily include anything explicitly shame-inducing. Maybe it looks like something a younger version of ourselves would think or say, but why is it that reaction to seeing it is this unease, annoyance and cringe?

I don't usually like human AUs but recently I can't stop thinking of teen Markus and North. North coming from some really fucked abusive household, Markus from similarly fucked orphanage. North, who is being belittled on daily basis learned how to stand for herself, fighting eye for an eye, while distancing from everyone as an equal threat. Idealistic Markus meanwhile, coming from a similar place with no hope or future becomes the embodiment of both, having some unexplained resources of keeping the good faith with extraordinary ability to see the best in people and letting them see it too even when they themselves are only able to perceive themselves as evil, broken and irredeemable. Markus becoming the sunshine he is, not from being naive and stupid, but on the contrary from awareness of surrounding hell and violence around him (that at some point even leaves him with broken legs) that desperately needs a source of light and warmth that he is willing to become because no one else would.

Also, I really much despise the sentiment that "The only reason to dislike X character is because of their sex/race".

While it is true that some of this dislike for some people might be caused by some sexist/racist bias (and for some that's actually all there is to it), telling every person who dislikes or even as much as just criticises X character that it is the ONLY reason and that it's not even possible to have any others, feels like an implication that there's nothing MORE to that character to love or hate them for, as if they're nothing more than a pure essence of just their sex/race, which in itself feels like the opposite of the intended message of "check if your dislike is rooted in your sexist/racist bias" and sounds more like "The only reason I like them is because they're black/woman" which even if completely not true, that's the impression such statement accidentally conveys.

I just feel like a good character is the one that have a plenty of reasons to be both loved and hated, and denying them one of those potentials (no matter which one) cheapens their character into a caricature

"female characters getting unfairly less fan attention just because they're not men" and "female characters are usually written with less thought and as a result of it turn out more boring and less charismatic compared to male ones which partially explains why they fail to appeal to fan audience" are not mutually exclusive statements, and pointing out second one doesn't deny the first.

So far Wuthering Heights seems so comical, I even audibly laughed a few times from how awkward main character ends up from his wrong assumptions (I'm only 1.5 chapters in. It takes me ages because of how difficult the language is). It was a bit of a surprise to google it and find out that it's a gothic novel that is supposedly full of cruelty.
