Some older art of the best little guys themselves!!
I never posted this because I wanted to link the fic it was inspired by, but I couldn’t find it :(
(It was about four and Hyrule discovering each others… shrinking abilities, and then going off and having fun in the woods together. In the sequel Legend got suspicious and investigated in his bunny form XD)
edit: the wonderful @uncleskyrule found the fic! It’s Of Minish and Men by Seeking7 on Ao3!!

Yandere time and hyrule headcannons
I'm not sure if you've seen the hype around sky being in his undershirt and being ✨pretty✨ in the recent update, but could I please request reader fawning over Yan!sky in his undershirt or some general hc's for him?
Thank you both for requesting!
Notes: I wasn't that online on tumblr around that time, so I only saw it now lmao.
Anyway, I did both headcannons and a oneshot, hope you'll like it!
Also, yes, I merged those two requests since headcannons can be piled into the same post.
I'll probably sound redundant in a lot of these, simply because I didn't write this at one go and when I got to it again I may have forgotten that I wrote it before. My memory is not the best, forgive me.
There are more headcannons for Time because he's my favorite, sorry.
I need a master list, seriously.
Edited before sleeping, I'm sleepy and probably messed up one or two paragraphs of this.
The oneshot in question.
TWs: Yanderism, Mentions of food and bad eating habits and a little of my fairy/fae brain rot.
Don't mind grammatical errors, please!
Headcannons for yandere Sky, Time and Hyrule.

Yandere! Lu! Sky x Reader
Tumblr media
For starters, Sky is sweet, but he is very manipulative.
Therefore, don't be surprised if you notice you stopped doing many of the things you used to do when you first got through the portal.
Most of the time it's not even bad things!
He might team up with Hyrule and Wild to take care of your main health, like eating habits. If you're a picky eater then expect Sky to slowly transition you into eating a little bit of everything, in no time you'll be eating like Wild does.
Then again, he'll also make sure to get the ingredients to the foods you do eat without struggling, also getting Wild to make a separate meal for you, should you not eat that one specific recipe Wild made for dinner.
You'll probably be getting help from him when it comes to self-care habits as well, like, the max of skin care and hair care you can get at Hyrule. He will make the effort to talk to people who know more about your skin and hair type, those who have it and take care of it well.
But, we can't ignore the genuinely bad things he will try to influence you into doing...
Privacy? Gone.
Not only will he be around you most if not all of the time, but he will also always be paying close attention to you and what you're doing.
So if you believed keeping a journal in your language would help you keep some things to yourself, then think again. The privacy of using your language instead of hyrulean to write in your jornal will soon turn into a mere illusion. Despite being more quiet and seemingly the less imposing of the Links, Sky has already gone, and will keep going through lengths for you, which includes learning the language you use.
Of course he noticed you kept a private journal, and despite you trying to lie about the contents of it, it's only a matter of time until he is skillfully scanning through the pages with his eyes like he's reading his favorite book. Memorizing any and all information he can find about you.
As manipulative as he is, he is also delusional, he doesn't have any idea of what he is doing, he simply doesn't know that what he is doing is wrong on so many levels.
He's not doing anything on purpose, he's just trying to protect you and get you to like him, like a normal guy!! At least, Zelda liked it when he did this with her back then, just how different are you two?
Genuinely, Sky would have a hard time figuring you and your emotions out. You're a human being after all, and he respects that those things are not supposed to be easy to figure out. In fact, he highly respects and appreciates that you're complex.
Not that he'll respect boundaries, nope, no way.
You're a puzzle he's very much looking forward to figuring out. Honestly, the only puzzle he'd ever want to figure out.
So, I'll probably elaborate this later, but the chain as Gods. Sky would be very much a Thor. That means silly blonde lightening man.
Imagine hylians from Sky's era used matching earrings alike engagement rings, like, Sky just randomly inviting you to an overly nice picnic, just to hand you blue earings just like his.
And if you don't have your ears pierced anywhere it'd be even better in his eyes, since he'd just adjust it to be a "normal" ring.
It was actually an engagement ring, but you didn't know that, or any of the other Links, really, since this tradicional custom got lost in time.

Yandere! Lu! Time x Reader
Tumblr media
I think pretty much everyone knows Time is a teasing bastard.
Don't get me wrong, he can be pretty mature, but trust me, it's not really common for him to act like that.
Time is used to pretending, he used many different masks to become different races in his journey, that was needed from him at the time, the same way that being the mature one is being needed from him right now.
Just because he is deeply traumatized emotionally and physically from his job as a hero doesn't mean his personality is lost as well.
It didn't change that much since he was a child, not really.
He is addicted to making you flustered, so if you get flustered easily I'm sorry for you.
If making you blush is a challenge then I'm just as sorry for you, because Time isn't quite known for giving up easily.
And he's good at making people embarrassed, too.
The amount of women who were in love with him is everything I need as proof.
But the worst part? He doesn't have bad pick up lines.
Look, Time is a toucher, so yes, his love language is physical touch, that makes sense to me.
That doesn't mean only cuddling, of course, it can mean cuddling and hugging when you're alone, but do expect a few more things.
I was gonna say hand holding in public, especially in crowded places, but you know what? Guiding you by holding the back of your neck is simply easier to him, and a lot more obvious "back off!" to strangers who look at you for far too long.
Also, randomly leaning against you, the two of you may be just walking and suddenly you feel a large mass lightly leaning against your own body, almost making you stumble. you might just be standing in front of the dinner table, reading a recipe book and once again you just feel that familiar presence right behind you, but instead of hugging you from behind he's just there, like he is reading the book along with you.
Remember how you were reading that one recipe book? Well he might give it a try and help you make something in the kitchen just to spend time with you. Like, you're just pouring ingredients in a bowl and he's there "helping" you by wrapping his arm around your waist to give you "emotional support", as he calls it.
He is, in reality, just standing there watching you cook, trying his best to resist the urge to distract you and simply annoy you, because he is still trying to make it seem like he is a mature, grown man, and definitely not one who is eyeing the flour in his reach and thinking about launching a handful of it at you.
You did see his hand slowly reaching for the flour in the corner of your vision. He only stopped once you threatened to scoop out his remaining eye should even a speck of flour hit your face.
Yet, Time is a creative man, flour was only one of his plans.
He's got wandering hands and wandering lips. And he can and will make use of those just to distract you.
And that's how Time became banned from the kitchen when you were the one cooking, only being able to join you for cleaning later.
So yeah, his love language is physical touch, but it is also disturbance.
In that matter, he's not very different from Wind when you two are alone. If you ignore his flirtatious moves, that is. But he's quite different when you two are with the others, especially if you've done, or is doing something to annoy him, then he has to keep up that mature facade of his.
He believes the others won't take him seriously should he reveal his actual personality, so really, when you're around others you'll only get glimpses of it from time to time.
It is mandatory from the Links to be stubborn, but Time takes the cake.
Maybe it is his age, but he will never change his mind, ever. No point in arguing.
So when he is silly, he is silly, but when he is serious he is terrifying, no exaggeration.
The worst part is that older people have a lot of respect in Hyrule, so no matter what he says, his word is law.
Now, don't get me wrong, by now, pet names are just a thing Time always does with you, in a way you barely hear your own name coming from his lips unless he's being really serious about something.
But actual words of affirmation? Not his thing.
He'd much rather be as clingy as glue to you when you're alone.
But, not like Sky's soft, light cuddles. Time Will basically smother you.
Seriously, it may be his sheer muscle mass, but he'll drap himself over you in a way you'll feel yourself surrounded by him.
In fact, the first time he did it you probably almost suffocated.
You'll get used to it eventually, though. Hopefully.
He's pontual and very strict as well, he and Hyrule are probably gonna be bickering in most matters involving you, like, for example, "five more minutes" naps.
Don't even try to trick him, you'll hear stuff like "I was your age once" and shit, the man will act like he's a hundred years old or something.
Then again, he might be, after all, he is older in mind than he is in body.
He was forced to mature quicker and went through a lot of trauma, that, and he also had to go back in time a lot of times.
Now that I think about it, he probably lived for longer than your grandparents. Just saying.
Tumblr media
Yandere! Lu! Hyrule x Reader
Tumblr media
Don't get him wrong, Hyrule is very much full of love, really. He cares about everyone equally.
Yet, as corny as that is, your name isn't "everyone", you're not anyone, you're you, how could he even think about possibly treating you the same way as he treats everyone else?
You're put on a pedestal, everyone else is treated equally by him, except you, you are treated like you are divine and not mortal like he is.
So you'll feel like a toddler 24/7 around Hyrule, he is not as stubborn as Time, he's just… Persistent.
The other Links will find themselves teasing him for it a lot, even if deep inside they are just the same.
Play nice, walk on the line and you'll have a Hyrule at your beck and call. If you know how to do it right, you will be able to use his babying to your own benefit, because trust me, his persistence can work on the Links much more than yours, after all, they trust him for being another Link.
I feel like he'd also help you keep pets, it may be his fairy nature, but he is just good with animals, especially with forest animals. Be them small or big.
Although he definitely has a soft spot for smaller pets, even more if you're the one asking him to bring along a pet you found.
Surprisingly or not, Hyrule is probably one of the most protective Links if you happen to lean more towards the naive/vulnerable side of the spectrum.
It's a general fairy headcannon of mine, but since fairies take care of forest and the animals there, specially the smaller or more vulnerable types of animals, then it's not new for them to be also quite protective towards humans close to them.
Bonus points if they have those traits.
But then again, you're Hyrule's darling, you may be as strong and independent as a Link yourself, but he'll still see you as in need of his care and attention at all times.
That also may or may not be another reason why Hyrule treats you like a toddler.
So yeah, coddling. Lots of it.
Hyrule is also a fan of small things, trinkets. Natural or shiny... Precious or useless... In his eyes all are treasures.
Treasures you'll find your bags and pockets full of.
He is absolutely a rock, cristal guy.
Imagine, you're just walking to another village, and suddenly Hyrule stops walking for a few moments, just to speed walk towards you again just a bit later, cleaning something he is holding in his hands with the help of his sleeve.
Then he hands you a small, clear rock, grinning.
Better get used to this, it's probably gonna happen at least once every day.
So yeah, love language is gift giving and acts of service.
I feel like he's very awkward with words of affirmation, he didn't spend a lot of time saying or hearing those, after all. Like most of the Links.

“Will You Marry Me?” - Sidon x reader
Tumblr media
“I have no idea how to word this and I’m so sorry if it’s a bad request but randomly I just thought of Sidon and hylian reader being friends when they were younger and Sidon asking her to marry him or something (the zora way), and she just responds with “if you can ask me that same question in a hundred years, I’ll marry you” and then they meet up again a hundred years later cause we started traveling with link and now they are sitting in the same spot and Sidon asks the same question😭 I know this is really bad but like” - anon
oh. mY. GOD! THE FEELS!! the friendship. the passing of time. everything. everything about this request is great. trust me, you did the lord’s work here by sending this in :’)
i had this all written out, and wanted to wait to post this one tomorrow. however, i’m feeling emotional tonight, and i felt posting it was needed.
i hope you enjoy (because this one is probably one of my favorites) <333
y/n - your name
“When we’re old enough, will you marry me?”
you were just kids
play pretending around the Bank of Wishes
but he wasn’t playing at the moment
he was serious about his statement
“Sidon… Zora’s age a little differently than Hylians…”
“I know…”
you sighed
“If you can ask me that again in a hundred years, I will.”
Sidon laughed
he knew your answer would have been different if Hylian’s and Zora’s aged the same
however, he also knew that you were both too young to get married regardless
time passed
things changed
but your friendship never faded
never
but then
you were put into stasis
Purah and Impa thought it was best, since you were technically helping Link on his quest to save Hyrule
you wake up in a foggy haze
hardly remembering anything
‘Where am I?’
as you venture along though, your memories start to return
even before you remember Sidon and Zora’s Domain, you’re heading that way
because your body just… leads you
it remembers the things you don’t
and here you are
standing in the domain’s center
hoping that someone could lead you in the right direction
lead you to remembering why you’re here
and there’s Sidon
Vah Ruta had already been taken care of
and he was running his daily errands
when he sees you, he drops EVERYTHING in his arms
he runs to you
wrapping his arms so tightly around your body
as if you’d been missing for a century
to him, though, you had been
“Y/n!”
he’s holding you so tightly
tears streaming down his cheeks and into your hair
you’re still trying to remember
but his touch feels so familiar to you
the Zoras in the area are starting
but Sidon doesn’t care
“I’m so happy you’re safe.”
it takes some time to re-familiarize yourself with the domain
and Sidon is more than happy to help you regain your memories
he’s so understanding
and patient
oH HYLIA this man is patient
he tells you stories of your past
and stories of after you’d left
he makes everything seem so crystal clear
and once you fully regain a sense of self
and once your memories have returned
you remember what he said all those years ago
but you don’t say anything
because you know he couldn’t possibly remember something so small and silly
but still
you find yourselves sat at the Bank of Wishes
wading your feet in the water
your head laying against Sidon’s arm
and he smiles at you
“You know I love you, right?”
and you smile with a light, cheerful laugh
“I do.”
and he’s silent for a moment
he stares out into the water, thinking
“Do you remember what I asked the last time we were here? I’m sure it’s a bit fuzzy, but I wan—”
“I remember, Sidon.”
and his focus shifts to you
his eyes are wide
and he looks as if he’s seen a ghost
“I remember it well, actually. I remember the lotus flowers being in full bloom, just like they are now; how clear the sky was; how… how young we were…”
he’s silent still
“I remember.”
“Good.”
your focus on the water now
you’re half expecting him to make a joke about how young and naive the both of you were
but
he doesn’t
“My feelings for you haven’t faded, you know…”
and you simply nod, still staring at the waves in the river
he caresses your face
“Y/n…”
you turn to face him
and his eyes gleaming from the sunlight’s reflection on the water
he stares at you for just a moment before placing his lips on yours
he’s soft
he’s warm
inviting
he pulls away slowly, his hand still placed on your cheek
“Is your answer still the same?”
you don’t speak
he knows your answer
but he still wants to ask
“Y/n, will you marry me?”

Things I’ve observed/love about Linked Universe
Sky, my precious beloved Sky, he is the absolute soul of this group, and it’s not in an obvious way, which is what makes it so great. Sky is a quiet, sincere, caring person - he is not an overwhelming presence in the Chain. He looks out for his teammates, he cheers people up (when Legend teases Wind about his mask, Sky pipes in with “I think it’s cool,” to cheer him up), as soon as someone is hurt Sky is literally the first person to help them. E.g. when Time is hurt, Sky goes to him first. When Wild is hurt, Sky helps protect him and Wind. When Twilight is hurt, Sky helps Warriors protect him. He tries to reassure Twilight that the attack wasn’t his fault when they’re ambushed, he takes the heat away from Legend’s Pink Hair Disaster when Warriors and Hyrule tease him about being slow (which has to sting given his journey, but he doesn’t show it, he just rolls with the punches). He’s always seemingly in the background but he is always present, always piping up or hopping in when someone seems to need help, and I love that for him. He’s the first hero, the original, the one who started it all, and it’s just perfect that he looks out for everyone in his quiet manner. I’d love for a story where Sky is hurt or goes missing and the Chain suddenly realizes how much warmth he brought to the group now that he isn’t there. Or I’d love to see the Chain realize that this fluffy bird loving sleepyhead actually has a core of molten magma and is a feral god slaying sass master. Characters who are capable of destroying worlds but choose to be kind, sweet, and unassuming instead are just my favorite.
Time, I love how he’s obviously the leader of the group but I can 100% guarantee it was not something he actually decided, he just started doing his thing and is used to traveling on his own and making decisions (as Jojo pointed out, he’s used to being decisive because he’s dealt with time travel) and the entire Chain just silently agreed “he’s ancient and acts like he knows what he’s doing, he’s the leader.” Time probably didn’t even realize it until a few weeks into their journey and was like “crap when I did become the Dad how do I deal with eight insane children.”
Twilight, Lord, where do I even start with this ranch hand, his protectiveness and Big Brother Energy is everything. Also, he is awesome as a wolf, and after seeing how he was treated as a monster by his loved ones in his game, I understand why he hides his ability from the Chain; poor thing is probably scared they’ll be afraid of him or hate him and that must hurt. I adore his relationship with Wild and with Time, and I really enjoy seeing him look out for his other brothers too, like when he got irritated at Legend for snarking Sky (joke’s on him, Sky is the King of Sass). He is so eager to prove himself to Time it hurts. I hope he doesn’t die. T_T HE CAN’T DIE, JOJO, HE’S AN OLD WOLF WHEN HE HELPS WILD, DON’T CAUSE A PARADOX DANG IT.
Legend truly is a legend, like he is so amazing and layered. I love his sassy defensive shell, I love how he is both Tired of adventuring but couldn’t imagine not doing it, like this kid is clearly hooked to adventuring (as much as I love the fancition about him being like NOPE when the Chain initially finds him, I 100% believe he’d actually be exasperatedly saying “this would happen, wouldn’t it” but secretly be pretty intrigued/excited at the prospect), he’s just traumatized from the whole Marin situation. I also love how he steps in as de facto leader to protect his family when Time, Warriors, and Twilight aren’t there. And one of my favorite moments with Legend was when Wild got hurt and Legend was immediately like OMG HE’S DEAD like chill, honey, Legend is such a drama queen. XD
Hyrule is such a precious bean and I want to hug him so badly like oh you sweet child why do you think little of yourself SOMEONE SHOWER THIS BOY IN PRAISES AND ACCOLADES. I also find it interesting how he has this duality to him, like he looks at the others and says “I’m not a hero like you guys” but when surrounded by enemies he just smiles maniacally and says “TIME TO BURN EVERYTHING” like... guys, Wild isn’t the arsonist of this group, Hyrule is.
Wild is wonderful in all his angst, but my favorite aspect of him is when he gets to be a goof and show his, well, wild side. Him and Hyrule are such an underrated pair, like we need more of their insane gremlin energy together. Send them into a cave and see what happens, Time, just don’t be surprised when the whole mountain shudders and collapses on top of them because Wild set off too many bombs and Hyrule swore the exit was this way but maybe it actually wasn’t. (Twilight had to go digging through the rubble and was not happy while Sky paces frantically at the camp being held back by Legend, who is saying stop being an idiot, Wolfie will find him you don’t have the stamina to dig through an entire mountain and Time is just sitting in a corner silently fuming and waiting to give Wild and Hyrule The Look when they get back while Warriors takes charge of the group because Time can’t be bothered with this BS for the rest of the night)
Warriors I honestly love his charisma and he definitely hides a lot of hurt and trauma under it. Like he’s a soldier, he’s fought in a giant war, clearly he’s going to have baggage, but unlike others (Legend or Wild) who make it obvious, he just acts as the teasing or caring big brother and handles it like a somewhat functional adult, which, as much as I love angst, is a nice change. I’d be interested to see his experiences get addressed at some point, but in the meantime, you keep being a seemingly stable rock for others to lean on, Warriors. *salutes* Also I love how affectionate and loving he is with the youngest heroes like Hyrule and Wind.
Wind just has so much energy to him, he is a delight. So cute, never let your little light stop shining, kiddo. He has a lot of heart and determination, and I love that he is competent and really doesn’t need the amount of babysitting the others try to force on him, but he is still very much a kid. Like unlike Time, who was likely a very quiet, solitary, and mature kid after his adventure, Wind is just so boisterous and has that childlike energy, but it doesn’t detract from the fact that he is still a good fighter.
EDIT! Four is definitely the one I know the least about, but I’ve been looking into him some more and noticed that he is someone who is a mature person and I feel like he wants to prove that he is an adult - like he’s go ta natural maturity to him but he gets offended easily when called a kid by an elder. He’s patient with younger heroes, loves to tell stories (don’t tell me he doesn’t, he was being super dramatic in telling his octorok story), but my favorite thing about him is that the reason he is so even keeled is because the poor kid has FOUR PEOPLE SCREAMING in his head at any given time. Like yeah, I’d be the zen person in the corner constantly meditating too if I had to deal with that. He’s also very observant, he figured out Twilight’s secret before almost anybody else. My favorite thing about him is that the instant he split, Red started having a complete meltdown even though the entire point was to prevent Wild from having a meltdown over the same thing. I can’t stop laughing at that comic, honestly. I think Four has spent this entire journey just watching the others with a running commentary in his head and I really need someone to write that, like imagine when Wild got hurt and it goes something like:
Red: Oh no! He’s hurt, we have to help him!
Green: The Sailor and Sky have him! We have to focus!
Blue: HAHA WHAT A MORON, GET WHAT YOU DESERVE FOR BREAKING SO MANY SWORDS, DUMBASS
Vio: This isn’t productive, we need to focus--
Blue: MAYBE YOU SHOULD JUST USE YOURSELF AS A SHIELD MORE OFTEN SO YOU DON’T BREAK THOSE TOO
Vio: BLUE FOR THE LOVE OF HYLIA
Red: OMG THE CHAMPION IS GONNA DIE
Green: *sighs* We’re screwed.

Okay, quick question. Can you rank all of Ganondorf’s designs in the series since you already did his beast forms?
A quick question but no quick answer ahahaha Ocarina of Time:
Tumblr media
Okay so look, this, THIS is the guy that started my years long obsession. His design here is so ridiculous. They call him the man in black armor but WHERE IS THE BLACK ARMOR? What I see is a skin tight black leotard with leather armor that is....molded to his abs? This is a sign that Ganondorf always ALWAYS has to maintain abs to wear all this. He is wearing thigh high leather BOOTS with a little heel in them. He has Pingu kneecaps. He is wearing a belt at his waist that doesn't seem to serve any actual function. The links holding his forehead jewel in place pass BENEATH his eyebrows. He has dumbo ears. He is a goth child gone wrong, a piss baby and a massive hater. 9.8/10 what the fuck are you doing Ganondorf. Wind Waker:
Tumblr media
Wind Waker Ganondorf decided that his fashion choices of his younger days were far too complicated and stupid to maintain and that maintaining 5% body fat was also really stupid and impractical. Instead he opts for an elegant robe that gives him the air of a wiser, albeit still maniacal, man. I love how his sleeves flair out and the patterns along it that lead to the wonderful pattern on his back. The jewel he wears on his chest is a nice added touch. His shoes are kinda weird though. 9.5/10.
Twilight Princess:
Tumblr media
Honestly this entire design fucking slaps so hard. He is actually wearing black armor this time. His facial features are so sharp and well defined and severe and HANDSOME HE IS SO FREAKING HANDSOME IN THIS GAME BUT IN A DERANGED WAY. The armor is just stupendous, and the fact that TPHD added a Link engraving on it is *chef's kiss*. The injury on his chest is fucking gruesome and badass and tells a whole story on its own. He wields the holy blade that was meant to kill him, and designed a sheath for it in Gerudo fashion as the ultimate fuck you to his executioners. He paints his nails. His crown is so intricate and extra. I do find his hair a little funky though. 9.7/10. Hyrule Warriors:
Tumblr media
HE HAS LONG HAIR FLOWING OUT. His crown is also very extra. He has little daisies on his armor. He wears the Hyrulean equivalent of 20 dollar bills on himself. His gauntlets are so ridiculous why do they have CLAWS they must catch onto so many things! He also wears way too many belts and has a butt cape (to protect himself from the oogling eyes of simps). He really needs to take his armor into a smithy because that shit has cracks literally everywhere. His buttcape needs mending too! This man loves war and fighting and is not afraid to show it. 9.9/10.
BONUS SHOUTOUT TO MY FAVORITE SKINS
Chickendorf (His blue eyes really freaked me out the first time I saw them ahaha. That is where the inspo for my user name comes from btw)
Tumblr media
TRONdorf:
Tumblr media
Tears of the Kingdom:
Tumblr media
WHY!!! IS HE GREEN!!! Like all the other Ganondorfs have a more natural shade of skin, or at least a passable color but this really, really bothers me. He is so green. He did not have to be green. We know he's the bad guy without making him green. ANYWAYS, apart from that, I love that he is always, ALWAYS with one sleeve off. Of course we love to see his beautiful body he worked so hard for but it also suggests that he is always ready to throw hands. He has a tattoo which is awesome. His belt is pink and that is very Barbie girl of him. I really really like the design of his robe; I just wish we could have a full view of the patterning inside. His hair style is so ridiculous but that is on par for Ganondorf (and I think the little manbun is cute imo). He is decked out in so much gold he is making sure you know he's king. He paints his nails because that's canon for him now. Truth be told I enjoy the round ear look, but I hate the implication it has in the lore. Also please he needs shoes a desert man cannot be walking around barefoot. 9/10.

Happy 300 followers!! 🥳 first of all, I would like you to know that every single time I have sent you an ask, you have been so sweet!! You give off such good vibes! 💚 and your writing??? Omg?? It is SO GOOD like *chef's kiss* lol you're one of my favorite zelink writers, a treasure to this fandom, and you deserve many more followers!! Now, if I may 😂 I have this idea living in my mind rent free for ages: how about some zelink, modern AU, famous actor or singer!Link heavily flirting with hyrule's princess on live television. I hope it is not too specific? 😅
DO YOU KNOW WHO'S THE WORST? ME! I had this half done forever and then that's when I conveniently hit my writer's block! BUT I FINISHED IT! It's not quite what I had initially envisioned, but I wanted to make sure I got this done while my brain was working !! THANK YOU FOR THE PROMPT AND i"M SORRY IT TOOK SO LONG
Also on AO3 if that's easier to read! (Some suggestive themes ahead but nothing crazy)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There was a moment when the jacuzzi jet stream hit Link’s sore muscles just the right way that he let out a sigh and sank deeper into the warm bathtub. Suds covered his mouth, and he blew them away with a small huff and ran his hands through his scraggly hair.
It was his first night actually at the hotel in… gods, it had to be a week. Night shoots and hours of being on set had left him exhausted, sleeping in his trailer, staying at friend’s rooms who were closer to the studio where they filmed The Twilight Realm, a popular television show that he was the male lead in.
If it weren’t a safety hazard, he’d have fallen asleep right in this bathtub.
Still, he couldn’t escape. His mind wasn’t blissfully empty; it was filled with pages after pages of memorized lines from his script. His ears still rang with the explosions from their pyro work on an exploding bridge today. His eyes burned from exhaustion and smoke and lights.
And still, tomorrow, he had a charity gala to attend.
A long yawn escaped him, and he grabbed the bath pillow and a glass of wine from the closed toilet seat and leaned back, trying to de-stress.
But it was a little difficult when that charity gala would be attended by none other than the Princess Zelda of Hyrule herself.
With a rueful look at his wine, he set the glass by the sink, tossed the pillow out of reach, and forced himself up, watching the water spiral down the drain almost hypnotically.
Only when it was all gone did he towel off, and throw himself onto the bed, passing out before he could even pull the comforter up.
The next thing he heard was a voice.
“Link, let’s go you’re going to be— OH! Link! What?”
His eyes creeped open at the familiar shriek of his best friend and cast mate, Midna. She flipped her red hair over her shoulder and pulled a pillow from under his head, letting him fall with a thud, before firmly setting the pillow on his lower waist. “I didn’t need to see this.”
“What? What’s even happening?”
“Do you know how late you are?” Midna chided, grabbing one of his suits off the hanger. “Get dressed.”
Finally, his eyes blinked open and he saw Midna leaving the room in a shimmering black gown.
A black gown.
The gala.
“Shit!” Link hissed, tossing the pillow off of him. There was a draft, and he chuckled seeing that in his exhaustion, he’d forgotten to put anything on. “Sorry, Mid!”
“Yeah, not like I haven’t seen your dumb ass before on set!”
Link slid a pair of sweatpants on so he could cross the room to return to the bathroom. Midna was pounding on his couch on her phone.
“Well,” Link scoffed. “It’s less embarrassing when I’m wearing a modesty sock, so I’m still sorry.”
“Accepted,” she sighed wearily.
Midna and Link had gone on one date before realizing their chemistry was solely on set and as friends, and since the popularity of the The Twilight Realm blew up to extreme proportions in season 2, he was so grateful to have Midna with him every step of the way. Even now, while filming season 4, the level of fame he had was still so wild to him. Grocery shopping in peace was a thing of the past and it was all online orders and deliveries if he wanted to have a day without feeling the flash of a camera in his eyes.
Link cleaned his face in the sink a bit haphazardly, leaving red marks everywhere before sighing at his reflection. Baggy circles under his eyes, tousled hair. He looked a wreck. But still, he brushed his teeth and returned to his room, dutifully donning the pressed suit and expertly knotting his tie before combing his hair out. In the limo would be their stylists to fix their hair and makeup before the red carpet, so he left it as it was.
“Look okay?” Link asked, coming out of his room with his arms wide to show his outfit off.
“Yes, sure, you look great. Come on, Beedle texted. They’re waiting outside.”
“Alright,” he muttered, fixing his cuffs as he grabbed his things back off the table. Nothing was ever put away. Nothing ever had to be. It wasn’t like he’d stay here long before needing to go to a new filming location anyway.
~~
Flashing lights, bulbs so bright his vision became tinged with blinding stars blocking out his vision.
He was used to this. It was hardly his first red carpet, and with his hand firmly against the skin of Midna’s back, he felt grounded, despite his lagging tiredness and barely functioning mind.
Face slack so he wouldn’t strain his jaw from smiling, he posed as perfectly as he’d been taught. His hair flipped in the way that had the internet swooning. He tilted his head in the way that won him “Sexiest Man in Hyrule” two years in a row.
He played yet another part of his to absolute perfection.
Little did they know that the famous actor struggled with back pain, crowds, and—thanks to the list of his ‘accolades’— several self-conscious body image issues.
At the table, food was served, and he politely excused himself when he’d finished the two vegetable portions from the food that was on his approved diet plan for his role on The Twilight Realm, and instead took his checkbook around, dropping checks off to a few people that he and his financial adviser had already written out in advance.
It was all so… normal.
When the plates were cleared away, he grabbed a merlot off a passing tray and skulked to the corner.
“Did you eat enough to drink that?” Midna asked, leaning beside him.
Link shrugged and took another sip. He had, but he certainly couldn’t wait to go back to the hotel and order something he actually could eat.
“See the Princess?” he asked, watching the blonde Princess Zelda of Hyrule daintily savoring a glass from her table, surrounded by armed guards and looking about as miserable as he felt.
“I do see her. No photography allowed in here,”she muttered, watching Zelda set her glass down to stand and wander, trailed by her guards. “How the facades fall when the public stops watching.”
“They’re always watching,” he scoffed, looking around to see a set of eyes of a gossiping group watching him and Midna as they conversed. Anxiously, he took a swig of the remainder of his drink and set it down, already looking for another.
The need to drop his mask for just a moment overwhelmed him, and he gave Midna a kiss on the cheek. “I need air. You okay if I ditch for a bit?”
“Oh, of course. Go! I have mingling to do anyway!”
“Thanks. You’re the best.”
“Tell me something I don’t already know.”
He winked before undoing the buttons on his tux and heading into the hallway. Security nodded at him as he passed, and he carefully moved past another set of suits who stood at the door to the terrace.
It was surprisingly empty. He expected it to be filled with any guests needing an escape or air, but he paid it no mind, preferring the quiet solitude he was so often denied as opposed to idle chatter.
With a relieved sigh, he threw himself down onto one of the outdoor sofas near a maintained firepit and groaned, closing his eyes in relief.
“Oh!”
“Shit!” he hissed, sitting up with a speed that would have called for a stunt double. Especially when his leg knocked against the flames of the fire, warming him with a far-too-close call, but nothing else. He swore before hopping away, brushing at his pant leg, looking up to see the last person he expected.
Princess Zelda of Hyrule.
His eyes bugged out. He’d just sworn and nearly fell into a fire in front of the princess.
Idiot.
Bowing low, he tried to shake off his nerves. “Princess!”
And then he saw her. Princess Zelda of Hyrule was watching him with a surprised look on her face from just behind a pillar where she leaned out against a railing. Her gown was long, the train was gorgeous. The embellishments alone cost more than Link’s paycheck, and he was well-paid. Long blonde hair cascaded down her back, still neatly styled with pins in an effortless look that had probably taken an hour. And her eyes; verdant greens alight with curiosity had him rapt immediately. The cameras really did lie: she was far more gorgeous up close and in person, and she was already beautiful on tv.
“I-I’m sorry, I thought I was alone out here,” he managed, rising from his bow just enough to catch the hint of a smile touch her lips before it disappeared almost naturally.
“How did you get past my bodyguards?”
“Your…?” he looked behind him, confused. “I…”
“Nevermind, it’s okay.” Her brows peaked. “Oh! You’re Link Faron! Wow! Um, hello! It’s nice to meet you.”
Shaking his head, it was almost unfathomable that the princess knew who he was. Not unreasonable, given the show’s popularity, but it was hard to wrap his head around. “No, the pleasure is all mine, Princess.”
“The Twilight Realm is one of my favorite shows. I’m… just a little star-struck.”
“Is it?”
“Yes, that, Into the Wild and—”
She cut herself off, her face flushing a bright red as she covered her mouth with a delicate hand, attempting covertness but failing.
“And?”
Her eyes glistened as she turned her head towards him, watching his deliberate steps. She'd already outed herself as a fan of not only him, but two shows when he'd showed everything off. His own face was red as he waited.
"The Bodyguard."
He bit his lip as he tried not to chuckle. A more serious role... where he'd fallen in love with the Princess he was protecting. A limited series with more sex scenes than the four seasons of Into the Wild combined.
"Our Princess has a type of show, it seems."
"And you have a type of role. It's not my fault you're a good actor."
He snorted, leaning beside her. "They don't hire me for my skill. They hire me for my ass."
"Well, who can blame them on that front at least," she muttered.
And then, eyes bugged once again, she clasped her hand over her mouth.
Link beamed at her, embarrassment and humor sending him onto a high. "Oh?"
"You'd think years of practice would afford me some grace, but I've simply fallen apart in the mere presence of you," Zelda laughed anxiously. "My apologies for that comment. It was crass and simply slipped from my tongue before I could stop myself!"
Link ran a hand through his hair and focused on her shoulder. A fine spattering of freckles caught his eye for far longer than he'd intended it to before it drifted to the strap that thinly drew more attention. And it was red. A pop of color that matched her lips, which he was dying in his attempts to avoid looking. "It's okay. I'm quite comfortable with the topic at this point. It's the modesty sock conversations that will still make me blush."
Zelda's brow scrunched, and he regretted his words immediately. Gods, had he just brought that up to the Princess?
And then, it got worse.
"A what? Socks?"
He licked dry lips. "Oh, just... it's... it's kind of like a sock that you use... to... well... it's...  it's not a sock. But you use it for... modesty." He glanced at her confusion and tugged on his bowtie to loosen it. "You put it on during sex scenes and nude scenes."
Zelda's eyes, for the third time, widened. "Oh! Oh, gods, I didn't know!"
"Did you just think we wandered around bare-assed, hanging out?"
"Yes!" she laughed, running her hands through her hair. "I always just thought you were  very confident in yourself."
"Hardly!"
"Really?" she asked skeptically. "With the way you look?"
"Would you strut around set with nothing on, Princess? For one as gorgeous as yourself, it would surely be easy."
Gods and godesses, why would he put that image in his mind. Why would he say that to a royal? What creature was possessing him?
"Mr. Faron--"
"Link."
"Link," she smirked, "You're far more amusing than you let on in pictures and interviews."
"Far more nervous, Princess. When I've imagined speaking to you, it was never about my full frontal nudity clause."
"Please, Zelda is fine. We've reached a level of personal conversation, at this point, that I believe you're allowed my first name. And for that matter, you think of me often?"
He let himself relax a bit. There was a comfort in knowing that the Princess of Hyrule was willing to flirt with him, even knowing what a wreck he was. He was able to pull from his stores of acting skills to play it cool, leaning against the railing a bit, stretching out. Reveling in her eyes taking a spin along him. It gave him a moment to swallow his nerves.
"Who hasn't thought of the Princess?"
"And who hasn't thought of Link Faron?"
"You?"
Zelda scoffed. "Oh, please! We've already accidentally established that you're my celebrity crush. How much more obvious could I get?"
"For what it's worth, Zelda, you've always been mine." He relished her name on his tongue, and couldn't stop himself from letting his knuckles graze against her skin as he pushed a piece of golden hair behind her ear, letting his hand linger and touch for far too long.
"I'm sorry," he said, stepping away. "I've taken up your private time with far too much self indulgence. I'll let you go."
"Wait!" she said, grabbing his hand. "I'm enjoying your presence, unlike all the donation seekers in there. Stay."
"Is that a command?"
For a moment, she considered, and a wry smile worked over her face as she watched him already inching back towards her. "Yes."
"Then how am I to disobey?"
~~~~~~~
Link hadn't even had time to register the light through his window when Midna threw herself onto him, whacking his arm excitedly.
He sprung up, looking around frantically. "What?!"
"You dog!"
"What?"
"Gods, you sleep in too often! Get up!"
He barely blinked in time to see her ponytail bobbing on her head, her sweatpants and sweatshirt hanging loosely over her. Exactly the opposite of the glamor she donned the night before.
Link grumbled, rolling out of bed in his boxers, rubbing at his eyes as he followed her to see what the fuss was about so he could roll back into bed.
"--and the Princess were seen getting extremely close last night. In exclusive footage, we can see 'The Twilight Realm' actor putting his skills to work on our future monarch, seducing her as much as she seemed to entrance him. Was it wine? Or do we have a new royal wedding to look forward to?"
The clip of him and Princess Zelda by the fire, him pushing her hair behind her hair, them laughing, even later in the evening when she'd grabbed his hand and he hadn't pulled away, and later when they'd moved to sit closer to the firepit and he'd given her his jacket. All of it aired.
"Oh, shit. They didn't get..."
He trailed off as the next clip was Zelda's tender goodbye kiss on his cheek hours later.
"Shit."
Midna watched him sit down, numb. "Link, can you call your girlfriend?"
His phone rang on cue. His agent.
Link toyed with the phone, his eyes on the screen watching the clip replay of her kiss. He could still feel the phantom tenderness of her lips on his cheek, hear the ring of her laugh, the lines of her discontentment on her forehead as they talked about their interests, their lives.
And he realized that, regardless of what he was about to hear, he regretted none of it.

I wanna write my thoughts on my playthrough of totk as I go along (cause I love going back and reading them after finishing), so I'm gonna post them on this blog!! If you're sensitive to spoilers like me, make sure to blacklist "#totk liveblog" :)
It got kinda long so I'm putting it under a cut haha
that being said, my beginning thoughts to the opening of the game were basically OMG ZELDA HI ZELDA I MISSED YOU LOVE THE HAIR OMG HI like she was so cute!!! I LOVED getting to walk with her in the opening it made me like actually emotional. Cause you never get to just!! walk with her and talk in botw!! She's SUCH a nerd I loved her info dumping on the ruins. At the same time I was like "girl please stop walking into the ominous red fog I can hear the chanting in the background getting louder ZELDA PLEASE" and the bit where you have to choose to keep going? It's like the game is giving you a false out, like the following events are your fault because you chose to walk forward and investigate
And then there was the craziness of MUMMYDORF being all like "mm pathetic. weak lil baby sword can't do anything lmao rauru was soooo dumb" and he can identify Link and Zelda on sight despite them being entirely new incarnations which I find very interesting
Then SHE FALLS AND LINK JUMPS AFTER HER AND HE DOESNT SAVE HER AND SHE DISAPPEARS AND AJHDJHDJSNKJAK
Also I got really sad about the master sword?? Fi girl I'm so sorry I promise I'll find a way to fix you :'( when you pick her up on the sky island and she's got 1 damage, less than a tree branch, I was just heartbroken. Though it does make me wonder, how much power has the master sword lost over the millennia, for it to be corrupted so thoroughly by Ganondorf's magic?? Maybe we'll get a chance to get her up to full power later in the game? Maybe reforge her somehow?
On the sky island when I was running around, I was convinced I missed the shirt in the beginning. I got the leg wrap things but no weird toga to go with it?? Straight up thought I somehow missed it even though I practically combed every area I walked through lol. My friend was playing with me and he made it their mission to find the shirt HAHA
The new mechanics/powers are so much fun!! After I got ascend, I kept forgetting I had it at first when I got stuck in underground places, and would wander around looking for a ladder or a climbable wall before I would be like "oh yeah I have ascend" lol. Fuse has been really cool! I love using extra long spears, they're so convenient for tough monsters cause I'm still Very Squishy. OH speaking of, I love that the opening addresses why you're back down to three hearts and a single stamina wheel!! once again, link has Almost Perished. But at least he has a sickass prosthetic from a dead guy!
Ultrahand is SO fun, I made myself a little jet when I was exploring the underground of hyrule with some fans, a 'wing' glider thing, and a ramp made of stone walls. It didn't go too terribly far BUT it got me over the Ganon Gunk I was trying to get past, so it was a success in my book!!
Recall is my favorite. I don't use it much yet but zelda gave it to me. So it Must be my favorite. It was a gift from my beloved.
Some other notes on getting back to the surface of hyrule:
PURAH IS FINALLY AN ADULT I'm glad your anti-anti-aging rune worked out for you girl
How long has it been since botw?? Also, how long were Zelda and Link missing??? Long enough for people to have named the Upheaval, and to organize groups for research and combat around it. How long was Link out in that sky cave?? How long did it take for Rauru to heal him/give him his arm??? Not years obviously, but maybe a few days?? Weeks??
Met a rito named Penn, I already know people are gonna be weirdly thirsty about him
The little Korok buddies needing to reach their friends is just. SO cute. Two for one korok seed deal also
Addison, the guy putting up signs for Hudson's construction business, is amazing. I help him with his sign and he's like "THANK YOU TAKE MY MONEY TAKE MY FOOD TAKE MY WIFE TAKE MY CAR I CAN NEVER REPAY YOU FOR THIS". and he does that every time. incredible
I'm still exploring in hateno but. guys. Links house. Zelda LIVES there and there is STILL ONLY ONE BED. I rest my case.
Also the school??? Zelda, who dedicated her life to her duty but had a love of learning, making her duty of restoring hyrule by starting with building a school and being a teacher??? The students call her Ms. Zelda??? brb crying. sobbing my eyes out. good lord.
Also Bolson built the school, but then he left to go on a trip??? Construction grandpa i need you here!!! don't leave!!! But also maybe it's good that you left. I don't want you to be here for the Ganondorf Revival. stay safe king
My horses from my last botw save file are here!! Good to have you guys back :') they don't have their cool armor but I guess I'll just find those sets again :) perhaps new ones also?? (I'm kinda sad I don't have the original save file from my first playthrough; I've replayed a few times but my first playthrough was the one I did all the side quests on, and it had my first really good horse, which was named Mürdur. He was all black, had 5 stars in speed, and was awesome. I fought my first dark beast ganon with him. Maybe I'll look for a similar horse here in totk...)
Horseback combat is AMAZING. I had to fight a huge group of monsters to get through fort hateno and I am still Very Squishy with only 4 hearts and no extra stamina, but I hopped on one of my old botw horses and just did a bunch of ride-by whacks on the monsters and eventually got them all! thank you horseback combat for the bonus damage. god bless
Kinda sad to see all the ancient sheikah tech gone :( I wonder if they'll address where it all went? Did you guys just... re bury it?? Did everything get sucked back into the ground??? Where's the OG sheikah slate?? Obviously we can't have it because then we would have access to the botw runes, which isn't what this game is about, but still!! I like the Purah Pad but I would like to know where it went!
Cave exploration is Very Fun and Underground exploration is terrifying in the best way possible. I found a glow in the dark shirt while I was down there and it has become my default armor piece to wear.
Speaking of armor, Misko the famous treasure hunter being referred to exclusively with they/them pronouns? excellent
Also how did this ancient treasure hunter get their hands on my clothes. those are my outfits homie I had them in the last game.
I haven't gotten to the main bits of the story yet, but the game seems to be pushing me to go to the rito first, so I think that's where I'll go after I finished exploring Hateno
Apparently Impa is just. Out there somewhere? On a hot air balloon??? I saw Cado earlier and he was like "Link you're back!! Impa is floating around out there :)" GIRL WHAT. WHERE.
I need to go check on Teba. why is your son in the trailer but not you. Also Yunobo, cause I didn't see him either

The Voice of the Goddess
When the day had started you were so excited. It was the release day of Breath of the Wild, the latest game in the Legend of Zelda series. You had been a fan of the series since you had first played Wind Waker on GameCube as a kid. You got a second hand N64 to play Ocarina and Majora, and an emulator to play the SNES titles. People would definitely say you were avid in your love for all things Zelda.
You had been on your way to the game shop to pick up your reserved copy. While you were waiting you saw a little kid running out into the road. Right in front of a speeding car. You didn’t even think when you ran to get the child out of the way of the vehicle. And got yourself in the way instead.
So now you’re in some kind of fancy looking room surrounded by shining light and fluffy clouds awaiting for your assigned afterlife, probably? At least that’s what you think the 8 foot tall glowy lady in front of you is here to do?
You look around the beautifully carved marble of the room “so I guess I really did die, huh?”
“I’m afraid so.” The tall shining woman replied.
“Is this the good place?” She had long blonde hair, wings, and a harp, so maybe she was an angel?
“Not quite.” She smiled softly, like you were a child with all kinds of questions about normally simple things.
Oh shit, she was going to send you to the bad place wasn’t she? This was for that time you released that horde of frogs in middle school.
“Don’t look so scared,” she assured you. “I merely have a favor to ask you.”
Ok now you’re really confused. “…A favor?”
“I saw what you did,” she began to explain. “It was very kind, if rather reckless and stupid.” Her smile turned a bit wistful, “but I tend to be drawn to the kind and reckless.”
“I am the Goddess Hylia, keeper of Hyrule. I would like to ask for your help in protecting my world.”
Your jaw dropped. You were definitely not expecting that.
“Hylia.”
“Yes.”
“As in ‘the Legend of Zelda,’ Goddess Hylia?”
“Correct.”
“As in the Nintendo game series, ‘the Legend of Zelda,’ Goddess Hylia?”
“Right again”
“How-?”
“Oh I’m sure I don’t need to explain multiverse and alternate realities to you.” She waved away your question before you could finish asking it. The answer probably would have given you a headache anyway.
“As I was saying before, I wish to ask for your help.” Her mouth shifted with a contemplative down turn, “I will give you a new chance at life if you swear to help in saving Hyrule from the threat of Ganon.”
“But why me?” You didn’t know how to fight or anything special like that. “What about Link and Zelda?”
“I fear that my chosen hero will not be enough to avoid tragedy on his own.” Her thoughtful frown shifted back into that soft smile. “And you have already proven your courageous heart.”
She held out her hands to you. “So I will send you to Hyrule, where you will aid the Princess and the Hero in their duties to defeat Ganon.”
The Goddess of Hyrule was asking to send you to Hyrule so you could join with Link and Zelda on their adventure to fight Ganon. Your entire being was vibrating with excitement! This was the most amazing thing that could have happened.
You grab ahold of the goddess’ outstretched hands with great enthusiasm. “OmG! I get to meet Link! And Zelda!? Do I get a magic sword? Will I get cool monster fighting powers? Can I fly?!” In you’re near delirium you don’t realize that are practically nose to nose with goddess of Hyrule. But who had time for the existential dread of having died when you could be going on adventure in the world of your favorite video game?
Hylia seems somewhat perplexed at your reaction but quickly recovers her composure when she realizes that you have decided to not question this too much.
“I’m glad to see you’ve decided to face this task with much vigor. Worry not, you shall have your own magic to aid in this fight.”
The grin on your face would probably be hurting by now if you still had a physical body. “Than yes, I’ll do it! I’ll help Zelda and Link and save Hyrule!”
The goddess moved to softly cradle your face in her hands. “Then you have my gratitude and my Blessing.” She placed a gentle kiss on your forehead as a light began to wash over your vision.
“May you always be guided by the Light of Wisdom, Strength of Courage, and the Power of the Heart.”
-
After the bright light you could feel yourself floating. You could hear the gentle sound of water lapping. And distantly there was a voice, slowly getting clearer.
“…up…please…” you feel someone’s hands grasp your shoulders as the try to pull you up from what feels like water.
“Please, Wake up.” A Feminine voice begs.
You open your eyes to see a beautiful girl with long golden hair and green eyes like a deep forest. “Oh thank the goddess, your alright.” She’s the one who had been speaking to you. You sit up so you can get a better look of your surroundings.
You and the Girl are sitting in a pool of water. Nearby there’s a statue, just like the goddess statues in Skyward Sword. On the other side of the pool there’s another young woman with white hair placed in complicated knots and wearing some kind of ninja gear? Next to her is a young man in armor with dark blonde hair and bright sky blue eyes. He has a hand ready to draw the sword on his back if need be. You recognize him instantly.
“Oh my goodness you’re Link!” You shout at him, the water splashed around you as you couldn’t hold in your excitement. You looked to the golden haired girl next to you, her eyes wide as you turned eager and smiling to face her. “And you’re Zelda!” You quickly stand up “It happened! I’m really in Hyrule! She actually did it!” You caused the water to splash about again, getting the still stunned Zelda wet in the process.
You noticed your mistake and did your best to apologize, “oh uh, sorry Princess.”
She stands up and does her best to recover her composure. Her expression turns stern as she straightened out her white dress. “Excuse me, but who are you? How did you get into the Sacred Spring?” Her questions came out more like commands.
Link and the other woman look more guarded now. Ready to attack if you give the wrong answer.
“Don’t worry Hylia sent me. I’m here to help you fight Ganon.”
-
After that “explanation” you were now sitting on the ground while Zelda and Impa (of course the other girl was Impa, you should have figured that out from all the Sheikah symbols) argue on whether you were a Yiga spy or just a crazy person. Link stood guard next to you to make sure you didn’t try anything funny.
You however were too busy shivering. All you had on was an off white shift that was now soaked from the spring.
You look up at Link, “do you think we could start a fire, it’s kinda chilly.”
His expression is unreadable as he makes a motion with with his hands that looks an awful lot like ASL for “later.” Seems like he’s waiting for the two girls to come to a consensus before doing anything else.
“Rude” you muttered. You turned back to Zelda and Impa. Zelda could not be convinced that you weren’t mad and needed to be returned home to whoever took care of you. Meanwhile Impa was absolutely certain that you were a Yiga trying to infiltrate them with this absolutely stupid plan. Neither looked like they were going to budge anytime soon.
Your vision suddenly grew dark as some kind of cloth was draped on top of you. You check to see that it is some kind of cloak. You look back up at Link and sign “thank you” back. He nods down at you and goes back to being an impassive statue.
You turn up to the sky, thick clouds blocked the sun and didn’t help with your wet clothing situation. How was Zelda not also freezing? She was just as wet as you were. If only you could get rid of the cloud cover, then you both could dry off your wet clothes.
You began to feel a strange weight in your chest. As it grows stronger it feels like something is trying to burst out. The feeling moves up to your throat and becomes harder to contain. Before you can figure out what’s happening you close your eyes and begin to sing.
While you don’t understand the words, you recognize the tune as the Sun’s Song from Ocarina of Time. As you sing the short tune a few times you feel warmer. You also notice that Zelda and Impa have finally stopped arguing.
You open your eyes and see the other three staring at you. “What, what is it?” You ask, unsure why everyone is suddenly so focused on you now.
“How did you that” Impa asks.
“Do what?”
Link points up to the sky, “That.”
You look back up to see a perfectly circular hole within the clouds, just above the four of you.

The Limits of a Hero
Hello hello, I’m here to bring you something rather special. A quick fun fact: When I started writing years ago, Link was actually the first character I ever wrote for, so this piece is sort of going back to my roots as a writer. That, and I’ve been in a HUGE Twilight Princess mood lately, (I recently bought a few volumes of the manga and I am very much enjoying it) so I thought I’d write this quick thing for my favorite incarnation of Link. I hope those of you who also like him will enjoy this.
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Link x Reader
Summary: During a seemingly ordinary night out in the woods you decide to give the hero a much needed chance to rest.
Notes: Fluff, some light angst
Tumblr media
The tree trunk felt rough against your back, but it provided a much-needed opportunity to finally rest and recollect your energy after yet another day of fighting against the twilight and its corrupt ruler. Yet you found a strange calm when surrounded by the night, the warm flames of the campfire swaying in the cool wind.
The wood crackled, the breeze howled and your eyelids grew heavy. You wouldn’t close them, however. Not yet. Instead, you kept your (E/C) eyes on the glowing fire, occasionally throwing in a stick or two to make sure your source of heat wouldn’t disappear.
Your thoughts wandered, as they often did ever since you were thrown into this dangerous adventure. How did everything change so fast? You could still hear the water trickling down the waterwheel in Ordon as if it was yesterday. Everything had gone wrong so fast, and now you were trying to save the entire kingdom from something you didn’t fully understand.
You knew it was the same for Link. But unlike you, he was much better at suppressing his confusion and doubts. You had noticed a change in him, no doubt caused by the sudden responsibility laid upon his broad shoulders. In addition to the more obvious changes in his attire, his cerulean eyes lost some of their glow, he somehow grew even more silent and he didn’t smile as often. All because he felt that his role as the hero chosen by the Gods demanded it.
It must have been tiring, you thought, yet he pressed on, never once letting even a single mention of how much it all weighed down on him slip from his lips. But you could see it. Whether it was in the way his shoulders fell with a sigh whenever he finished slaughtering a group of Bokoblins or how he yawned and stretched his arms almost every time he hopped off Epona. His body was fatigued, but his eyes held nothing but determination.
The rustling of leaves that came from behind snapped you back to reality, and your eyes fell on the bush where the grey animal soon emerged from, carrying something in his mouth the edges of which and a part of his lower body was seemingly damp. You watched as he walked with heavy steps towards the fire before dropping the thing you recognized to be a Hyrule Bass on the ground.
The fish flopped on the dirt and you found yourself raising a confused eyebrow at him, before locating his fishing rod not too far away from the fire, indicating that he had forgotten to take it with him. You looked at the fish again.
“Are we this desperate?” You managed to ask him as his beastly form quickly reverted to his original form you were familiar with. He sat on the ground and gave you a slight nod.
“We’re running low on food,” he said, taking a sip from his bottle of water. Most of his equipment was laying on the ground, though he was still fully clad in his green tunic, chainmail and all.
You noticed him taking out a small knife, no doubt intending to use it to prepare the freshly caught fish. He would not dare use his sacred sword for such a task. The bass was fairly big, enough for both of you, you surmised.
“I can take care of it,” you offered, noticing the tired look in his eyes as they turned to you. He shook his head lightly.
“It’s fine, (Name),” he assured and began cutting into the flesh, but you persisted.
“You haven’t slept properly in days.” It had been an exhausting few days, filled to the brim with battles against Shadow Beasts and other enemies. It took its toll on both of you yet he showed no outward signs of fatigue. Not that it was necessary, for right now, anyone could see the dark circles and bags under his otherwise gorgeous eyes.
He glanced at you, clearly pondering over your words while continuing to cut the fish. You were right, as you often were. He was exhausted, but the selflessness in him didn’t want you to lose any of the sleep you needed.
“Someone has to keep watch,” he began, but you quickly shut him down.
“Which I can do.”
You scooted over to him, noticing him making the final cuts to the scaly flesh of the fish. Placing a hand on top of his, you kept your eyes on him, trying to convince him.
“You need to rest, Link. Please.”
Upon hearing your voice that left your lips as a quiet plea he finally gave in, letting out a sigh that carried all his exhaustion into the air and letting go of the knife. He finally turned to you, his drained eyes glowing in silent relief.
“Will you be alright? You know you can wake me up any time if-”
“I’ll be fine. The only thing you need to worry about is getting some sleep.”
Your hand reached up to slowly remove his cap, exposing his dirty blond hair that bathed in the glowing embers of the campfire. You offered him a smile equally warm as the flames which he thankfully returned.
Planting the tiniest kiss on his cheek, you retreated from him, once again leaning against a lone tree. With your hand you lightly patted your lap, wanting the hero in front of you to have the best possible chance at getting a good night’s rest.
He laid his weary head on your lap and almost immediately, he let out a long yawn that indicated just how much he needed this, despite his stubborn protests. Your fingers found their way into his hair, running through his locks in a soothing manner.
Silence fell around you, though it was a refreshing change from the usual noises of battle and struggles. You stared at the fire once again, its welcoming warmth enveloping both of you.
“You’ve changed,” you admitted, thinking back to the simpler times, during which Link would have been more than compliant to sleep when he needed it. He let out a soft sigh, his eyes glued to the starlit sky above.
“I guess I have,” he agreed. You wondered if he meant it to the same degree as you did. Even now, you noticed the solemn expression on his face you had never seen back home.
Home. You thought about it a lot. Maybe a little too much at times. Ordon meant a lot to you, even more to Link you assumed. Perhaps that’s why he had gotten so stoic and serious. He was merely trying to protect what he held dear.
It was admirable, he was, by all accounts, a hero. Courageous, selfless, strong, yet still a mere Hylian. A capable Hylian indeed, but still a Hylian. A Hylian who the entire kingdom needed to save them. Everyone expected so much of him, it seemed as if he himself forgot his limits.
“You’re not all-powerful, Link.”
Your eyes fell on him, and his own looked up at you. Someone needed to be his voice of reason, and you were more than willing to take that role if it meant ensuring his safety when he sometimes couldn’t.
“Maybe I should be.”
Your eyebrows frowned at that. You knew he felt a certain sense of guilt about what happened to the children of the village. They were safe now, but there was a stinging sensation of shame embedded in him that made him feel responsible for all of it.
“Don’t say that. You did all you could. Pushing yourself to the point where you can’t stay up anymore won’t solve anything.”
He knew you were right. You almost always were. Link had always secretly wondered if it was a blessing that it was you who had accidentally stumbled across the same wall of Twilight that had transformed him into a beast. In all honesty, he was thankful.
“I’m just... Worried about you,” you confessed, feeling a small sense of dread in the core of your being. Just thinking about what could happen to him if he didn’t take care of himself made your stomach churn.
A troubled look fell on his face, as if he was feeling guilty about making your eyes fill with concern. You inhaled deeply and pressed your lips on his forehead, not wanting your own uneasiness make him anxious.
“Rest now. I’ll keep watch.”
With a small nod, he allowed his heavy eyelids to close and it didn’t take long for him to fall asleep, soft snores escaping his mouth that was partially agape.
For the first time in days, he looked truly peaceful. His body relaxed, rid of any signs of stress or tension, the only movement being that of his chest, moving up and down due to his steady breathing. With a smile you continued running your digits through his hair, hoping to comfort him even in his dreams you could only hope were as tranquil as your current surroundings.
“Goodnight, Link.”

Hi! First of all, I wanted to let you know that your writing makes my heart melt! All of your works are as funny as they are incredible, and I couldn’t help but fall in love with your blog!
If it’s okay to request, could you write something about the boys having to dance with the reader? And when they do, they start to catch feelings for the reader but don’t realize it? If it’s okay, of course ♡ have a good day!! And please, take all the time you need if you write it!

Masterlist
If I had a nickel for every time some one requested a detailed scenario where you can dance with Link, I'd have two nickels.
Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.
I should have known there were those who yearn. (And I listened to the song you referenced anon, and it's nice but I personally like Sam Smith's version better.)
But yes, I'll see what I can do.
Part 1 will include Warrior, Sky and Four
Content under the cut!
Warrior
Warrior wasn’t sure why the princess thought that throwing a party for the hero was considered a good thing.
Or at least not without warning them about it first.
He supposed she was just excited to invite heroes of the ears into her home and wanted them to feel that at least their efforts were appreciated.
But he hated this.
And Link knew he wasn’t the only one to think so if the looks of his companions were anything to go by.
But even as he makes his rounds amongst the elite, the fake and the genuine, he tried to make sure that his friends were at least have a comfortable time. He wanted them to know that they didn’t have to keep a face like he did amongst this group so if they wanted to have fun and dance and eat then they could.
They were guests in his home as well.
But no matter where he looked and no matter how many rounds he made, he noticed that were nowhere to be found.
Confused, he ventured outside the venue.
And as he looking for you, he just sees a silhouette against the moon light on top of one of the decorative rocks out in the middle of the rose bush maze.
There was no one else around and then again the guards and people were too drunk and joyful to notice someone breaking the ground rules of conduct or if they noticed, they simply did not care.
He makes his way toward the shadow and stalls for a moment when you look his way.
The way the light hit your frame seemed delicate and ethereal with an otherworldly glow to your hair and skin. The royal purple garb they gave you as a gift for not having anything suitable to wear to the party hugged your curves and angles in all the right ways. Someone must have offered you some jewelry to go with it because he doesn’t remember you having the gold necklace and matching head piece that pulls your hair back into a crown of curls tat frame your face in a divine manner.
Link found himself unable to breath for a second.
You smile and say, “I’m just taking in some air.”
“Not enjoying the party?” He blurts, worried for a moment that you’ve been uncomfortable this entire time... by yourself.... away from everyone.... just sitting in the darkness with the sounds of music and laughter in the background.
“It felt weird to be at a heroes party when I myself- am not a hero.” You shrug and lean back casually on the rock. “Here to drag me back Capitan?”
Warrior blinks and registers the change of pace in the music and will deny to the end of his life where he found the nerve to do what he does next.
He smoothly places the his cup of lightly bubbled alcohol on one of the lower rocks and holds out his hand to you. “Dance with me. Just once.”
You blink and also tune into the music behind the two of you.
It’s a slow dance.
You gradually smile and reach out to him, pulling yourself from the rocks surface and into his arms. “Just one dance.”
Warrior tries to hide the gulp that threatens to noticeably bob his Adam’s apple and places his hands on your waist and holds your hand respectfully. “Have you danced before?”
“Technically.” You answer and place your own hands in his and on his shoulder, pulling yourself closer to him. “I while I know how to dance with the elite, it’s just never been my scene.”
“I know how you feel.” Warrior takes the leads and guides you through the steps of the song. He’s been through countless hours of training for battle- and not those that end in bloodshed- but those that take place in the ball room with the nobles and high end society that would have one looked at him scorn and distaste.
He doesn’t blame you for wanting to get away.
But he does want you to enjoy yourself... if only a little bit.
The steps come naturally to him and he takes a moment to spin you around before you trip over your own feet.
A small giggle escapes your lips as you twirl and send the fabric billowing around you.
Warrior is struck stupid by the sight and almost steps off beat with the music. He’s quick to correct himself but he seemed to have your laughter on his mind on repeat.
“I’d stay out here with you if I could.” He admits as he repositions himself against you, trying to lead you away from the rose thorns and the maze itself so neither of you get caught up in it. “But unfortunately my disappearance won’t go unnoticed for long.”
“Oh...” You blink and look up into his eyes. “I suppose you really only have time for one dance, huh?”
He’s unprepared by how disappointed you sound and it would appear so are you with how quick you try to cover it up.
“It’s fine! You’re an important figure here, I guess it’s only natural that every one would want your attention. I hope you enjoy the party though. Unlike me, you deserve the recognition.” You smile genuinely but your eyes look like they’re trying to get some unknown message across.
“If I can somehow get away again-” Warrior rushes to keep your smile there and to include you in the collective joy the party was supposed to bring. “-Will you save another dance for me?”
You hum and tap you finger to you chin in thought. “It hasn’t been that bad being out here by myself...”
Warrior really hopes that you let him dance with you again even when you pull apart to the end of the music.
But you grin and reach up to boop his nose with the same finger. “Alright soldier boy, since you asked so nicely I’ll save the last dance just for you.”
Warrior laughs a little breathlessly and has to force himself to step away from you. He hopes to any and all who can hear them that’s he’s not actually blushing right now. “Ok. I’ll be back then.”
“I’ll be waiting.”
Sky
Sky was sure that every one was having a great time.
The music was loud and energetic and his friends were all off doing their own thing while the festival was in full motion.
It was a celebration for the people’s loftwings since it was usually the time of the year that they left their rider’s side- presumably to go lay their eggs for the next generation of riders.
But it was all fun and games for everyone involved.
Wind and Four seemed to be in a highly competitive match of toss the sack with Twilight being the point keeper on the other end. Wild and Hyrule were busy enjoying the food and no doubt collecting the recipes (Sky was hoping that Wild would make the food so he was no way inclined to stop him). Time and Warrior were off in a corner, talking to each other with a cup in each of their hands. Legend stood next to them without a cup but he seemed to be more interested in the décor and loftwings themselves.
But you...
Sky stopped walking along the ribbon perimeter and looked over to you.
You were by yourself... You didn’t particularly happy..
And that just won’t stand.
With subtle determination, he marches over to you and taps your shoulder.
You seem to blink back into the present and raise an eyebrow to him in return.
He can see the question on your lips just as you’re about to say it so he juts his head into he direction of the dance area with a simple hand out in your direction.
He hopes his intentions are clear.
You eye his hand and snap your mouth shut with a soft click. Sky gulps  suddenly, a strange bout of nervousness attempting to choke his system as you take your time to think about his offer.
Sky would never force you to do something that you don’t want to do but really (and he has no idea where this urge comes from) wants to dance with you.
Just once.
Just once to see you smile and enjoy yourself.
To see you happy.
You place your hand in his, soft and small and so much different than his own. “Lead the way, Boy Wonder.”
You smile and he returns your gesture, gently pulling you toward the open area as the next song starts. It’s light and airy and it’s enough to keep you moving even if you both stall for a minute to just sway side to side in each others arms.
Sky didn’t know that he’d feel so whole and accomplished by just holding you.
Emboldened by the tune of the events, Sky takes a step back and twirls you around as the music flows up and down again just in time to bring you back into his arms.
You laugh. “Perfect timing.”
“I do try.” Sky winks.
You giggle to yourself with a small shake of your head but you keep swaying with Sky across the dance floor.
The music comes to an end and Sky does his best gentleman’s bow as he lets go of you completely- even if he finds that he doesn’t want to. “An absolute honor to dance with you.”
The music starts up again in a similar tune but all he would have to settle for is just one dance. It’s all he’s comfortable with asking from you.
“Sky wait.” You blurt.
He turns around to see that... well you seemed to have startled yourself as well.
“I um..” You bite your lip and vaguely gesture to the musicians in the distance. “They’re not done.”
Sky smirks a little. “But the song is.”
“I uh... Just one more dance?” You hold your hand out to him this time and he stares in shock.
Not for long though.
He’s quick to place his hand in your and pull himself back to you. “I’d love to.”
Four
Four was excited to show everyone around the Festival of Fools. It was his favorite time of the year where everyone got to be silly and destress and play and eat and dance.
Four had always run around trying to do what he could never get away with on a typical day but right now he had to make sure his traveling companion didn’t actually burn the town down.
He loved them but he’d lying if he said that he wasn’t just the tiniest concerned over their facial expressions when he said that anything goes really- no laws but those of the people apply today.
Which made him the temporary babysitter for some of the more rowdy ones.
But he had lost sight of you a while ago.
Not that he was concerned or anything but... He did want to spend time with you.
The festival doesn’t happen everyday and he knew that there would only be so many days left that he’d be able to spend with the group and even less so that they’d be given a chance to relax and unwind.
That thought urged him forward to find you.
If only to make sure that you were having a good time.
He had found you by the food court where you munched on a meat stick and watched as the people came and go.
You looked bored.
Now Four knew that parties weren’t entirely your scene and you weren’t the kind of person to go and throw yourself into the middle of it all.
That being said it still rubbed him the wrong way when you looked like you would rather be anywhere but there.
 He oughta do something about it.
Just across the street a band had begun playing music for the people to dance to, now that they’ve usually had their fill for lunch.
Four saw you look over and smile, basking in the edges of their amplified joy and amusement.
He grinned and ran over to you, tugging your hand into his own and pulling you close to him. “Dance with me!”
“Wha- Four? Where’d you come from?” You dropped the finished stick in shock and followed him as he dragged you to the open space just beyond the food cart.
“I live here.” He laughed and spun you around. “Just one dance!”
“I- but- Four!” You dug your heels into the dirt and stopped the both of you from reach the destination. “I can’t dance! I- I’ve never danced.”
Four turns to look at you and smiles encouragingly. “Just let loose, it’s easy. There’s no right way to move, you just do. Just feel the music and my lead.”
You bite your lip and Four takes the moment of hesitation to pull you forward again. you let him and soon find yourself on a dirt arena with lively music and people all around you.
“Don’t let go of my hand ok?” Four grins.
You find yourself grinning as well and soon you’re both spinning and jumping and leaping and twirling around each other to the beat of music.
It’s fast and fun and within moments on simply holding onto Four you find yourself laughing uncontrollably as he throws you around like a rag doll in which ever way he likes.
He’s stronger than you imagined him to be but then again... He’s a blacksmith.
It shouldn’t be all that surprising.
Somehow in the midst of it, he throws you in the air and over his head, catching you in a spin and letting you catch your breath and the music dies down and another begins.
“You ok?” Four asks, a little breathless himself. He doesn’t think he’s heard you laugh so hard or for so long.
It’s nice.
“That was fun!” You managed to say in between your giggles.
Four’s grin widened and even if he knows it’s not your style.... and he only asked for one, he holds his hand out again just in time for the next crescendo to begin.
You look up and look at him and his hand...
You don’t hesitate to put your hand in his and he pulls you close to him again.
You spin and laugh and jump and twirl well into the night, completely forgetting about the others until you have to turn in for the night.
Four’s feet hurt by the end of it and he’s exhausted but to see and hear you smile and laugh and enjoy yourself in what is arguably his favorite time of year was completely worth it.
He hopes that he can spend more time with you... He hopes for just one more dance before it all ends.

Also got a series to collect them together or smth of anyone wanted to see both so far

Music Magic
======================
Wind rarely toyed with the Windwaker when it wasn't called for anymore. Too many accidental storms, but he still had the urge to play with it now and then.
He had a pocket full of suitable sticks, the collection always growing. He rolled several of them between the flats of his palms while the fire crackled low and the quiet murmur of individual conversations or the rough khhp of calloused hands signing at speed filled the near silence.
Sky was tuning and plucking strings absently. Wearing a similar unfocused gaze Wind realized was probably one of those Hero things. Each one of them seemed to have one like it. Not bad, not lost, not happy- but just being and not-quite drifting away.
Warriors was stomping his heels a little harder each time his knees bobbed and giving a sidelong look between Wind's fingers twitching in Conducting ways, and Sky starting to pick up a real melody.
Legend had sat on the dirt like Wind, but leaned his elbows back on the wooden bench behind him. Each of his hands held one of his odd notched drumsticks, tapping against his raised knees.
Wind put his handful of sticks down once he found one that Fit for the moment. The feeling shifted through the group, and it was one of Wind's favorites.
A feeling they likely all shared, music seemed to come to them all and find them somehow. Even Wild, who hadn't even heard of a third of the instruments the group carried, found music coming to them without realizing. They hummed, off key and raspy and disjointed, in little loops just as golden as the rest of their music. Goddesses and divinity or something, music fit right into it as far as Wind was concerned.
Wars was really good at keeping time and it thumped through the dirt across the fire. Wind knew Legend loved to sit on the ground for it like he did, probably grounding for him. Wind found it giddy and encompassing and made it all light up even more to feel it. It was like on the ship when Tetra and the pirates would stomp on the deck and hoot and holler- the whole ocean vibrated with it and Wind's face would hurt from smiling and laughing along when he couldn't focus enough on the words with them.
Legend was scraping his sticks together and making the coolest sounds and notes with them. It was almost like he had something new for every night.
Wind could feel himself starting to sway along and let his hands move a little more freely, following the magic being braided into the air from his companions.
Four was using his ocarina, following Time's lead. He was a good player on his own, but Wind liked to think sometimes Four got lost like him and would forget how to play when he was too excited. Or maybe he was shy.
Hyrule was using a tambourine and trying to get Wild to understand how to hit it for different notes. They'd probably be good with something big and loud. But Wild was definitely more shy until The Moment hit where it was all encompassing.
Wind loved watching and making notes while he conducted, but tonight was hard to do that. He was heavy and light all day and the air was cool and the breeze was just enough to make the music spiral and twist like a cyclone around him. He was totally enthralled. He felt his hair shifting and let it remind him of whipping around in the Outset gusts.
Twilight was too sore to play anything proper and more than happy to stomp along with Warriors to provide that deep shaking beat. It had been a stint of safety and manual labor in the little villages they'd seen. The area was clear and so was the evening sky.
Wind was a rhythmic puff of blond hair bobbing back and forth across the firepit. Hyrule was chewing on his lip through his grinning. Time had Four as a perfect copycat. Sky was, as usual, seeming to channel the song from somewhere above the clouds and leading them all through some story told by something greater than them. Or maybe Twilight was tired. Maybe Twilight was just comfortable.
Warriors let out a laugh and knocked shoulders with him, he was falling off beat. Twilight threw his arm across Warriors' shoulders and picked back up trying to match Wind's enthusiasm. Wars mirrored the action and he was sure the two of them looked like two drunks trying to hold each other up.
Next thing Hyrule knew, he was almost knocked over by the two stompy crew swinging around behind him. Twi and Wars swung each other around in some combination of Ordonian farm dance and War's fancy-pants dances.
Legend's hands were pleasantly numb and tingly from the vibrations. Almost totally clueless to the surrounding chaos, Hyrule and Wild both making indignant noises as they were nearly trampled startled him enough to drop one of his instrument pieces. Four's next note squeaked and wooshed out.
Time didn't break a note as he yanked Four further down their bench with one hand so the two-turned-three-turned-four dancing heroes ended up tripping over themselves and spilling over the seat.
Hyrule went down with a tambourine chhch and winded breath right into Legend's lap. Twilight tried his best to avoid a dog pile, and knocked Wind over instead. Wild went ass-over-teakettle and ended up laying flat on their back at Four and Time's feet with one leg still bent over the bench. Wars tried with all the grace of a drunk chicken to hop and balance only to end up crashing on top of Sky.
Time let out one last descending note on his ocarina.
Four promptly snorted, whistling through his own still bitten between his teeth.
And then Wind was up climbing over the others and talking a mile a minute. The others all laughing or begging each other to rescue them or tackling someone back to the ground. Time getting one hero or another in a headlock to ruffle some hair, and Four joining the mess was just the final cherry on the top of all hell breaking loose.

Heyyyyy~~~~~ Enno~~~ @twilightpoison @cafecourage
For the lovely drawing you made me!
Here is you Sky fic!!!
Hope you like it! Love you~~~ <3
~~~~~~~~~
Above in the heavens, there weren't any clouds to cover the breathtaking view. One would be terrified being this high in the sky, not able to see the ground below.
Though you couldn't help but sit on the edge with your legs dangling staring at the scene in front of you. No wonder Sky was so excited to show you all his lovely home of Skyloft, it was godly and so beautiful.
The Chain had arrived in Sky’s Hyrule a couple of weeks ago, the portal dropping them.
As in really dropping them, from the sky.
No one was expecting to walk through the portal to then just free fall in the air. Though it caused some unforgettable reactions from the chain!
Legend was spinning around in circles holding down his tunic to not accidentally flash anyone in the chain.
Warrior, oh warrior was the victim to be flashed at. His voice going so high pitched you would think a young girl had the scare of her life! In this case though, you wouldn't be wrong.
Hyrule was flapping his arms in the air while yelling, “GOOD GREAT FAIRY! GIVE ME MY WINGS!” no one knew what he meant.
Four and Wind were holding on to each other as they cursed like they have never cursed before. Even ending each other's sentences with very creative curses! It would have been very impressive in a normal situation.
Wild was going through his Sheikah Slate as he kept yelling about finding his paraglider. “WHERE THE FUCK IS THE DUMB THING THAT WILL SAVE MY LIFE?!?! I DID NOT SLEEP 100 YEARS TO DIE LIKE THIS!”
Twilight was holding on to the hair of Time as he was spitting out hair and fur from his fur pelt, pretty sure some got into his mouth and caused him to choke a few times.
Time….
Well, Time was just standing straight, arms crossed over his chest, face blank. “I’m not surprised.”
Yeahhhhhhhhh…. You might need to talk to Time after this, that...that's just not normal-
You! On the other hand, were reacting how a normal person should react, yelling your lungs off holding on to the closest thing you could grab, in this case. Sky.
Your arms wrapped around Sky’s torso, eyes closed with fear, you were thinking if this is where you were gonna die. You should tell Sky how you feel. “SKY!” Yelling over the sound of rushing wind you opened your eyes to look up at him, to tell him how you feel while staring at his ocean blue eyes.
You expected to see a nervous and fearful-looking Sky, but yeah that's not what you got.
Sky was smiling so wide you thought he would rip his skin from smiling so big!
 You really thought he lost it.
“I- WHY ARE YOU SMILING??” He didn't answer you as he lifted his hands to his lips to only let out the loudest whistle you've heard. Followed by the screeching of birds.
One by one each of the Chain was saved by multi-colored large birds. Looking over at Sky his smile never left his face as he brought you close to his chest. Soon a giant red bird flew under you two as you both landed on the soft pillow of feathers. The pure happy laughter Sky let out posed as a small distraction from the confusing events that just happened. The ginormous birds flew to an island floating in the sky.  "We're here!" Sky's booming voice caught the attention of everyone in the chain.
"This is my home! Skyloft!"
~~~
Skyloft wasn't a very big place but it had its own charms to it, a sense of comfort. The chain was welcomed with open arms as everything was provided to them to ensure their utmost comfort. Sky happily showing around walking through every inch and crevice of his home, his goofy lovable smile never leaving his face.
His face was so soft and filled with love while showing everyone his home, showing you his home. Introducing you all to every single person of Skyloft including Sun and Goose. Now everyone, after a small celebration, are fast asleep in their rooms.
Everyone except you, who is watching the spectacular view. Dressed in comfortable pajamas provided to you. The wind softly brushes against you as the soft chill that was not uncomfortable. The air up is so crisp and fresh compared to the land below.
"What are you doing alone?"
You stop at the sudden voice behind you but shyly turn around coming face what's a smiling Sky.  His smile never once wavered when he was back home.
"I'm just enjoying the view"
 "Yeah, the view is really gorgeous isn't it…". You don't notice that he was looking at you as he said the statement. He coughed a bit to clear his throat, "How are you liking it here in Skyloft so far?"
Looking over at him, you couldn't help but stare a little bit at his charming face. "Honestly, it's amazing. Everyone here is so friendly, they act like one giant family. The views are absolutely gorgeous and not to mention the lovely birds you all have!" Laughter was shared between the two of you, as you both unintentionally scooted just a bit closer to each other.
Sky's cheeks tinted a bit of pink raising his hand to rub the back of his neck. "I… um. I can show you the spot with the best view?" Poor boy's face was so red. Your face soon copied the same shade. "I… I would like that."
Standing up he presents his hand for you to take, his head turned to the side. Softly taking his hand he takes it upon himself to intertwine your fingers.
You could feel the calluses and scars on his hand which are no longer covered by the gloves, though the warmth of his hand was overpowering. A comforting warm feeling, a feeling that you welcomed with open arms.
Looking over the edge he squeezes your hand.
"You trust me?"
Without hesitation, you answered.
"Always."
You both fell off the edge.
~~~
Sky's Loftwing had dropped you both off on top of the goddess statue. Sky was right about the view, you could see everything! Not just all the skyloft but everything further beyond. The wind breeze was soft and it wasn't even cold.
"I… I have no words." Sky smiled at your response. "I'm happy you like it here."
A nervous chuckle and cough followed up with Sky pulling out his harp from behind his back. You chuckle a bit, "I didn't realize you had that!"  Walking a bit closer to you he looks at the strings, "I have a song that I've been meaning to play, do you mind if I share it with you?" Feeling honored he asked you of course you said yes..
Softly beginning to pluck the strings of the harp he did the unexpected,  he began to sing.
"I used to hear a simple song."
His soft voice perfectly matched the elegance of the harp.
"That was until you came along." Plucking at the strings he would look up to you as he continued to sing.
"Now in its place is something new." He seemed to gain confidence, as his voice began to sing louder. Him walking closer to you.
"I hear it when I look at you."
He looked up at you with nothing but love.
A smile gracing his face when he knew he has your full attention. "With simple songs, I wanted more. Perfection is so quick to bore."
Walking even closer over to you he softly caresses your cheek stopping to play the harp for a second
"You are my beautiful by far."
Smiling softly he goes back to playing the harp, "our flaws are who we really are."
Taking a deep breath he isn't afraid to sing his whole soul into this song, "I used to hear a simple song!"
His eyes never leaving you his smile growing wider soft pink flushing over his cheeks and ears. "That was until you came along!"
Tears couldn't help escape both of your eyes. You both realize the hidden meaning of the song, "you took my broken melody!"
The way that Sky looks at you is filled with so much love and compassion. If anyone were to overlook this loving scene. They will mistake it as two star-crossed lovers finally confessing their love for each other, but in reality. They're not wrong.
"And now I hear a symphony…"
Sky stopped playing the harp now his own voice continuing to be the elegant instrument. You weren't complaining, his voice was always your favorite instrument.
"Now I hear a symphony..."
You were both so vulnerable to each other, the way that you were looking at each other. The song fresh in both of your minds.
His hands shaking he went up to caress your cheek, you grabbed his hand and placed it on your cheek to reassure him. The choked-out laugh, his large smile filled with happiness including his tears of joy, sent the full message to you.
Wrapping your arms around each other never breaking eye contact.
Your eyes softly fluttered.
As your lips finally connect.
The kiss is so soft and filled with true love. The love you hold for each other.
Sadly ending the kiss, your foreheads placed together. Your arms never stopped holding each other.
"I love you."
"I love you too."
Note
I just finished reading The Ties that Bind, and I love it! I have a small suggestion, one that you could completely ignore if you would like. Will Fable, Legend’s Zelda, meet Sky? Or Sky and the rest of the chain? I feel like that would be fun. But this is just an idea that I had, I’m not pressuring you do to anything.
I'm sorry it took so long to get to your ask, Anon! I've been thinking about this for a while, and the truth is that, while I would LOVE to have Sky meet all of his daughters at some point, I don't know if it will happen in the main plot of the story itself.
Currently in the story, they are in Legend's Hyrule, so there is a good chance of it happening, I just don't know if it will.
Considering this came along with various fic requests, I did end up writing something where they 'meet' but.. I'm terribly sorry, it's entirely crack, and I took way too many liberties with it.
I hope it will do to hold you over until Fable can make an actual appearance in the story!
“So, we finally get to meet your sister?” Hyrule asked, following as Legend led their group down the halls of Hyrule castle.
“Yes.”
“Yes!” Wind pumped his fists. “The only Zelda we haven’t met! I wonder what she’s like?”
“Kickass.” Legend smirked, stopping before one of the opulent doors and turning to face them. “I’d watch yourselves.”
There were a lot of things the Chain was expecting to see when they walked through the doors, but Warriors wasn’t expecting to see a young woman who looked quite ridiculously like Legend, if not for the haircut, spinning around to see look at them before having a wide smile break over her face.
“Z?”
“Link!” And the princess was running, running forwards with feather soft, tinkling laughter into the arms of...Wild? “Oh, Link! I haven’t seen you in ages! Why, look at you! Growing your hair out I see.” Another giggle drifted into the air as the girl brushed a hand through the Champion’s messy bangs.
Wild flushed slightly, much to the shock of all present, but especially to Legend, who stared between the two with his mouth hanging open.
“Everyone’s missed you so terribly, especially after you disappeared so suddenly! The Master was absolutely furious.” Fable added with a nervous laugh, smacking Wild’s arm lightly. “Thank goodness I can tell him all is well and you didn’t get killed or something, we thought he’d oust Robin for good when we couldn’t find you!”
Wild winced, nodding slightly. “I’m on another quest, but maybe I can send a letter? The mail system is working pretty well, for some reason.”
“Not out of Hyrule unfortunately.” Fable pouted, seemingly taking no interest in noticing the rest of them for the moment, instead continuing to stand in Wild’s personal space, neither having quite let go from their unexpected and rather startling hug. “Without you, the Master has closed all contact with Hyrule; I don’t think he wanted anything else to happen, especially since Mother would have been furious if someone else had gone missing.”
“Wait,” Warriors turned to see Wind staring at the- couple? Duo? “Zelly?”
“Tune!” Fable squeaked, pulling away from Wild and darting over to hug the second smallest hero. “My goodness you’ve grown! Are the two of you on an adventure together then? Wonderful!” Ocean blue eyes trailed up to look at the rest of their gang and Fable brightened even more. “Why, all of you are here!”
“All of us?” He couldn’t keep confusion from his tone as he spoke, quirking a brow.
“Well, nearly all,” Fable frowned, setting Wind down to gently stroke her chin. “And here I hoped to see Young Link again.”
Warriors was going to lose his mind. “Young Link?” His eyes turned to Time, who smiled with a light flush, raising one hand in a nearly shy wave.
“Hey, Zelly.”
The princess gasped, hands flying up to cover her mouth as she stared upwards to meet Time’s gaze. “Young Link? My. Goodness! Look- Oh my! You’re all grown up, aren’t you? I declare, you get even more terrifying than half of the others!”
“Legend,” Sky was grinning as bright and warm as the princess, eyes sparkling in the same manner and erasing any doubt that he was the young woman’s ancestor. “You didn’t tell us your sister was The Princess Zelda!”
Legend stared up at his ancestor in disbelief before shaking off Sky’s hands and throwing up his own. “That’s it,” The vet spun on his heel and turned towards the door. “I’m gonna go bang my head against the wall for an hour, toodles.”
“Well,” Fable turned to Sky with a bright grin. “It is wonderful to see you again, Link. Good heavens, how on earth do all of you handle being ‘Link’, it was bad enough having you all switch out, but now you’re all together at once! How do you handle it?”
“I go by Sky,” The Skyloftian replied with a fond smile. “He’s Wild, Wind, and Time. We use our hero titles.”
“Oh! That is clever! Sheik and I both have different names, so I suppose had it easy, I’m surprised no one thought of that before, what with how you all switched out so often- oh!” And the princess was spinning around to look up at Twi. “We’ve missed you too of course, but I must ask, since you’re all apparently time-traveling or some nonsense, could you give a message to your Zelda for me? I haven’t seen her in ever so long, and I do miss being able to talk over things with her.”
“I’ll pass it along.”
“You too.” She turned to Time, brows furrowing lightly. “Sheif is so terrible about writing to me, and I’ve missed being able to ask for advice with my fighting skills.”
“Understood.” Time grinned, earning a mirror expression from the princess.
How the heck was everyone taking this all in stride? Was Legend’s sister...dating Wild or some shit? How did she know Wind and Time? How did she know Sky? How did she know any of them?
“So,” Twilight cocked a hip and stared down at the princess with a warm smile. “They let you stay around, even after switching out all of us?”
“Yep! I am, apparently, quite the favorite. As is L- I mean Wild.” She sent a warm smile towards said hero, who flushed with pleasure. Ew.
“Should’a known it, he's a good kid.”
“He says you mentored him, so I suppose that can be attributed, in part, to you!”
“Aw, thanks, Zelly.”
Warriors would like a drink now please.
“Wait,” Four stared at the princess, eyes slitted and brows furrowed in a way that revealed he was clearly having a headache as well. “You’re- good grief- you know all of us, don’t you?”
Warriors really needs a drink. Seriously? Four too?
“And who are you?” Fable cocked her head.
Four flushed, ducking his head. “Hero of the Four Sword.”
Like a switch had been flipped, recognition sparked in Fable’s gaze. “Oh! That- that makes sense! I had forgotten, I suppose, how you all- well-” She waved her hand vaguely, and while none of the others seemed to understand it (thank Hylia he wasn’t the only one), Four apparently did. “You don’t think it’s weird?”
“Heavens no!” Fable drew back, looking mildly offended. “Link- my Link- or rather, my brother- Good heavens, what on earth do you all call him?”
“Idiot. Pain in the ass. Veteran.” Warriors listed off, making sure his displeasure with being left out of the conversation was made very clear.
“Legend.” Hyrule answered, shooting a glare Warriors’ way.
“Legend, my, that fits,” Fable shook her head with another tinkling laugh. “Does the same thing, albeit in a different manner and without the use of the Four Sword.”
“Heard that!” Legend shouted from just outside the room. “Stop telling them things!”
“Then come in here and make me, you sissy!”
The vet stormed back in, cheeks red and brow looking considerably more bruised than it had been ten minutes previous. “Not a sissy.”
“Yet you only appear on occasion, and never fight?” The princess snarked, hands on her hips.
“Do I look like I have the time to be fighting?” Legend returned, mirroring her pose with enough attitude to match the blue flames of the princess’s gaze.
“Well, if you have time to play dress up-”
“Necessary for a mission, miss ‘I fight duels in my regalia’.”
“I win duels in my regalia, thank you very much.”
“Heck yeah you do.” And was that- pride in the vet’s voice? “You scare the shit out of all of them.”
“I always was the better of the two of us at doing that, you just spend your time talking to cuckos and wearing my clothes.” The princess smirked.
Legend didn’t even have the decency to flush, crossing his arms with a smirk of his own. “You have to admit, I look better in it than you do.”
“Yes.” Fable beamed. “Yes, you do, and I hate it.” Her smile said the opposite but the conversation seemed to be over at that, the princess turning to continue conversing with the other heroes only to spin around again and clap her hands. “Oh! You're off exploring and adventuring, so you drop a message for me! Tell Peach and Daisy that I’m awful sorry I missed tea last time, we’ve been trying for weeks to get around to it, but with L- Wild having disappeared, the Master simply won’t give me the free time and Mother’s been just as strict.”
Legend pouted. “Only if they’re the only ones home, if I have to see that insufferable plumber’s face again I think I might just punch him.”
“Please do.” Fable spat. “He used that stupid hat of his to mind control me and make me kick the crap out of my team.”
“He mind controlled my sister?” Legend hissed.
“Yes, that dumb hat of his is sentient now, and he can force us to do things.”
“I hate that thing.” Wild scowled.
“Same.” Several others echoed.
Sky looked between them all. “Are we talking about Mario? Because if so, Legend, I will totally join you in punching him in the face, that guy is a pain!”
“Oh, him!” Hyrule scowled. “I don’t like him; he grates on my nerves like nobody's business.”
“He’s worse than Tingle.” Wind added, face screwed up in distain.
“Seconded.” Twilight and Time called out together.
“Third, Fourth, Fifth and sixthed.” Four added.
“Just because your name is ‘Four’ doesn’t mean you get four votes.” Warriors groaned, staring at his companions in irritation. “And who the heck are you all talking about? How do all of you know him? Is he immortal?”
“Hylia, I hope not.” Nine voices groaned at once.
“Neighboring kingdom.” Legend replied. “The Mushroom kingdom’s own hero is an idiot plumber by the name of Mario. His twin isn’t bad, but he’s a piece of work. I’ve had to deal with outbreaks of monsters from their kingdom on multiple occasions because he can’t keep them contained. Add in there that their princess is captured every other Tuesday because the guy can’t up and beat her kidnapper for good, and the kingdoms a mess.” Legend paused, frowning. “Wait, I just agreed to go there, didn’t I?”
“Yep.” Fable chirped. “But don’t worry, Bowser is hanging out with his kids this weekend, so he shouldn’t be causing problems while you’re all here.”
Warriors groaned, this time, loud enough that all of them heard him. “Bowser? Are you on a familiar enough standing with some villain that he tells you his weekend plans?”
“Yes.” The twin siblings answered, Fable bright and cherry while Legend deadpanned.
“We even play sports with him on occasion.” Fable added.
“And who,” Warriors tacked on, absolutely done and uncaring for the fact that apparently Legend and Fable played golf or something with their neighboring kingdoms greatest threat. “The heck! Is Mario?”
Nine pairs of eyes stared back at him for a moment, blinking in confusion.
“You know,” Twilight stated slowly. “Has anyone actually ever seen Wars at an event?”
“Come to think of it,” Fable tapped her chin. “You are the only one I’ve never seen before.”
“The only one?” Can Warriors please get a drink?
“I’ve met all of the others, be it in racing, sports, fighting matches, any number of things, but I don’t think I’ve ever even seen you, much less heard of you. Who are you?”
“That,” Legend smirked. “Is the Hero of Warriors. And I don’t know if I should laugh or feel bad that he was never popular enough to get selected for the games.”
“You weren’t either.” Wind hissed.
“Mom said I was on bed rest from being struck by lightning.” Legend waved him off. “I’ve had my time in the Mushroom kingdom, and if they ever do invite me back, I’d burn that Smash invite so fast the Master would think it never arrived.”
That’s it. He’s done. “Legend, I’m stealing your thunder-”
“Please do.”
“I’m going to go bang my head against the wall until the world makes sense again, or until I black out, Bye.” And with that, Warriors left.
(This entire fic was inspired by @tortilla-of-courage, her blog had a stint of asks about the boys knowing each other from Mario Kart and whatnot and it set my brain spinning. I blame her that this was the only thing I could think of when trying to write Sky meeting Fable. Thank's Tortilla!)
Discord Convo: Yasha, Essek, Culture, Shadowgast Ramblings
Me: Man I wish Essek and Yasha could have - nvm I'll finish that thought later.
Sibling: I KNOW. I ALREADY KNOW WHAT YOU'RE GOING TO SAY AND I WISH YASHA HAD BEEN MORE PRESENT IN THE STORY
Me: Stop doing the hive mind thing. it's invasive. i feel violated.
Sibling: I can't help it.
Me: But yeah Essek and Yasha. I find it very interesting because there's actually a lot of crossover in their temperaments, but in terms of physical presentation, they couldn't be more different. They both came from completely different sub-cultures in Xhorhas, and it's like... that temperament among the Rosohna Drow. It makes me think that they learned how to like... Okay hang on this is hard to put into words... Right so from a meta perspective, it reads like Matt took Yasha's basic temperament and applied it to other people of Xhorhas.  Like Yasha was a broader expression of typical mannerisms of Xhorhas (except that Yasha was no longer bound by the modesty of the cultures there, and having been exposed to Molly, was freer with her sexuality after it was stifled in the Wastes in her youth). Right? So with that thought in mind, look at Essek. Essek doesn't have the same trauma Yasha has so he doesn't have the same sort of dysfunctions, but when you first meet Yasha, she does display a casual arrogance/confidence about her power, and Essek has the temperament, but what he lacks is the freedom from modesty. He's extremely withdrawn.
Sibling: Are you saying he's going to become an e-boy? Because there's no promises that under that cloak, he isn't already one lmaoooo
Me: Well, I think it's interesting because this is actually one underrated area where I think Caleb would actually be really good for him and vice versa. It also says a lot about the odd intersections of culture in Xhorhas, because in old drow society, sex was uh... you know, let's not go into that.
Sibling: Just all of the nasty tags from AO3
Me: but my point is that it makes sense that the Kryn dynasty would be heavily influenced by and adopt a lot of the mannerisms and cultural relations from the people of Xhorhas because... they would be trying to distance themselves from the violence of their past by integrating stuff from the cultures they colonized. It makes sense that maybe the nomads of the wastes would impact their mannerisms and dynamics, though you can see echos of old drow culture in the dynasty, of course, with the dens and all.
Sibling: They're doing what the pirates from Wind Waker did once they found New Hyrule lol. "Yes, oh yes. We love technology"
Me: Yeah. So anyway, Yasha and Essek would have been interesting to have more interactions with.
Sibling: I mean, both are good characters? They just didn't have a lot of screentime, and it didn't really seem like Ashley was super interested in exploring her past. It doesn't help that Yasha was essentially silent for all major character interactions lol.
Me: They are both socially awkward, with casual confidence in their skills, and somewhat similar mannerisms, but Essek is very modest but manipulative, and Yasha is very upfront/blunt, and both of them have the guilt thing going on. Going back to Essek and Caleb. I think that their immediate positive effects on each other are obvious, but on this topic specifically... Caleb's only ever hesitant with his affection because of his trauma, really.  You get the distinct impression that he used to be a lot more touchy feely (just look at his early game dynamic with Nott), and while he is usually very polite, he has no problem with being blunt about his sexuality when he thinks he can get away with it. At the same time, Caleb's history with sex and relationships is really twisted and complicated, so he needs a partner who is respectful of boundaries and willing to check what is going on at any given time. In other words, he needs someone who is not like Molly (no offense to widomauk shippers).
Sibling: I mean, that was the primary problem with Molly. They had no sense of boundaries and that was good for someone like Yasha. Not so much for people with trauma related to lack of boundaries.
Me: (text dump) No, Molly DID have a sense of boundaries; they deliberately crossed them in order to make people uncomfortable. THAT was my biggest problem with Molly. Molly knew exactly what they were doing. Taliesin said as much. It's why I never shipped widomauk, because it’s yet another relationship where casual disregard for Caleb's comfort is present. It's why if I had shipped Caleb with anyone other than Essek, it would have been Fjord or Caduceus (but he's a disinterested ace and I respect that) or Yasha (but she's gay and I respect that) simply because they were clearly the ones who appeared most cognizant of Caleb's social comfort levels and such (so basically widofjord is what I'm saying, lol).  This isn’t a widomauk hate thing; it’s just not to my taste because I relate too much to hating having my personal boundaries deliberately treated with disrespect. That's going off on a tangent, though.
Essek, in contrast, needs someone who he can let his hair down with comfortably. Essek seems to only really feel that way around Caleb and Jester. Caleb's the only one Essek really initiates touch with. Caleb's the one who gets Essek to swear for the first time, like Caleb swearing gave Essek permission to do the same just for the hell of it. Caleb and Jester, more than the others, made it clear that he's allowed to be goofy when he's with them.  The two of them joking around with Immovable Object (and Caleb openly participating in that clownery with Seeming and such when he and Essek have so much in common) makes Essek feel comfortable with exploring not having a stick up his ass 24/7, which is exactly what a clearly extremely repressed person like Essek could benefit from in a partner, a person who he can relax around and vent with, because he's very obviously never had that before, or at least not consistently. And how did he get to that point?
It's from a thing about Caleb that is extremely underrated. Caleb, be it from his natural personality or that coupled with his training, knows the value of being openly vulnerable.  It's very clearly NOT something that Trent specifically taught him.  Caleb recognizes that the best way to manipulate people is to be sweet and earnest and awkward and TRUTHFUL about his beliefs and vulnerabilities, but this pays off in ways unintended. Caleb expects it to just be transactional, but people end up genuinely forming bonds with him because of it, and what's more, that he does that with such regularity results in other people responding in kind (which is the goal).  Someone as reserved as Essek could only stand to be vulnerable BECAUSE Caleb made HIMSELF vulnerable first. I think the best thing Liam ever did for Shadowgast was make it clear that everything he said to Essek may have been manipulative... but every word of it was also true, because Essek is clever enough to recognize that honesty.
The most underrated line in Essek's growth as a person doesn't even come from Essek, and it doesn't come from Caleb talking to Essek. I think people forget about this, but during the final conversation with the scourger, which Essek was present for... the scourger asks Caleb why he's bothering with her. And Caleb says (paraphrasing) "I think that I hoped if I could see one hint of change from you, I could believe that we aren't both damned." Imagine being Essek and hearing that. It recontextualizes everything about Essek's growth. The rapid change between the boat scene and Aeor isn't just because Essek wants to be a better person. It's because he wants to prove to Caleb that Caleb isn't damned, because no one has ever done that for Caleb. Caleb is so obviously drowning in his past during the Aeor arc. That sort of hope is something he desperately needed. It's one of the few things about the Aeor arc that isn't botched by the rush to end the series; Essek's consistent determination to be a positive influence on Caleb, for Caleb, was gold from start to finish. Remember too that by the time of the boat scene, Caleb had already met with Astrid and had that disheartening conversation. Essek's efforts to become a better person feel like he's trying to almost unknowingly undo the damage that the recent interactions with Astrid and Trent had done to Caleb's psyche.
... tldr, Caleb is going to teach Essek how to be a manslut... in private... jk but not really.
Sibling: I SAID THAT EBOY ESSEK LOL! Ugh... that final epilogue screwing over my favorite MLM ship... It's not canon. They went and made their own school, and lived forever in disguises to keep the scourgers coming after them.
*That was the end of this part of the conversation.  On reflection, I ought to have noted that Essek’s modesty might not be so much a cultural thing as it is an “Essek trying to keep people away from him like a prickly porcupine” thing, but you never know.  If it is cultural, that may be the result of the dynasty trying to distance themselves to the practices of those who worship Lolth, but I don’t know that Exandria lore has ever said anything about this?  And if it is a cultural thing, is it limited to the nobility, like Essek? One could also argue that the cultural practices of Yasha’s people, with the arranged marriages and such, may have influenced the dynasty’s own cultural formation, but I feel like I didn’t make that clear enough?  Anyway, that’s why it’s a ramble.
In Plain Sight
Summary: The Kingdom of Hyrule has a strict no-magic policy; any magic user could be put to death if they’re found out... even if that person is the Princess.
~Generic AU. Zelink. Mild/moderate violence range.~
Word Count: 8436
Or on Ao3
“Keep it secret. Keep it hidden. From everyone, especially your father.”
Zelda kept her hands behind her back, her mother’s voice echoing through her memory as she stared at the pyres in the distance, flames roaring with the vengeance that her father poured into every witch hunt. There were three this time, and Zelda was grateful that they were far enough away that they couldn’t hear the commotion that always accompanied such events.
“This is barbaric,” she whispered, as she did every time she was forced to attend.
“This is justice,” her father, King Rhoam whispered in return. “They are a blight. The greatest evils in this world are caused by these creatures, and they must be purged.”
Zelda said nothing, simply sighing and keeping her eyes on the ground until it was over. The grass wasn’t terribly interesting. It swayed in the wind every now and then, but there was little else to occupy her. She counted the intervals between gusts. They were uneven and unequally spaced out until they stopped all together.
She glanced up. The spectacle was still taking place, and she needed to stay entertained to get through this.
Biting her lip, she took a brief glance at her father before curling her finger behind her back and immediately feeling the wind return, a bit stronger so it could caress her face and move her hair and whip at their royal cloaks. She turned into it and closed her eyes, letting a smile rest on her lips as she felt the magic in it as poignantly as if it were a physically tangible thing. She knew this was something only people like her could feel.
She hummed in contentment, lost in the distracting feeling.
“Wind’s picked up, eh?” her father mumbled, tugging his flapping cloak against him.
Zelda felt a prickle on the back of her neck, which always happened when someone was watching her, and her eyes immediately glanced around until she found the source of the attention, because her father’s eyes were rapt on the scene in the distance, even when he spoke to her.
One of the knights, her favorite, in fact, had his eyes on her, softly watching her enjoy the breeze. She never mistook the gleam in his eyes as anything other than simple attraction, as she was sure he’d noticed in the way she lazily watched him go about his tasks as well.
So when their eyes met, they both smiled at each other for the briefest moment, forgetting where they were and who was around before he regained his better senses first and proceeded to look straight ahead at attention, as he was expected to.
“Can’t we leave yet?” Zelda asked, letting the wind die down slowly so as not to seem suspicious.
“Stop asking me, Zelda. You’re a Princess, and you must endure long events without complaint.”
“Yes, court hearings and council meetings. But watching people die? Please… I…uh…. I have a delicate heart,” she said quickly, unsure what else could get her out of this. “And these events so easily break it.”
King Rhoam looked at her and sighed. If nothing else, he did love his daughter. He had a terribly odd way of showing it, but he did. And to him, she was still just a fragile child.
“Link!” he called, and Zelda’s favorite knight stepped forward. “Take the Princess back to the castle.”
“Yes, Your Majesty,” Link said, bowing first to the King and then to Zelda as he followed behind her.
When they were far enough away, Zelda visibly shuddered and turned over her shoulder for a final look at the smoke in the air, praying that no one ever found out her secret, or she would be up there herself.
Her father loved her, but there was no doubt that he hated magic more. Other royals in the past hadn’t been exempt from the law. Her own mother had been one of them, and her grandfather had carried out the sentence himself.
Zelda had been under more scrutiny in her youth when they were watching to see if she’d inherited her mother’s magic, but Zelda heeded her mother’s words and kept every impulse to herself, fighting not to use it at all. Now, it practically called to her, begging to be used, like a siren calling a sailor into the sea. She simply couldn’t help it at times.
At night, she’d pray to the Goddess, begging Her to take away Zelda’s powers. She wanted to feel safe in her own home, and to lose the one thing that made her special. She wanted to be normal. Ordinary. Unassuming. Uninteresting. Safe.
The Goddess never listened, and Zelda’s magic only grew stronger over the years.
“I hate those events,” she muttered to Link as he hurried up beside her.
“I know.”
“Why do you do it?” she asked, glaring at him.
Loyal to a fault, Link was one of the knights who was responsible for bringing in many of the magic users who’d eventually be put to death. It was an order from the King. And Link never refused an order.
“His Majesty commands that I do so.”
“What if I command that you stop?” she asked, already knowing his answer.
“I’m sorry, Princess. Your father’s commands supersede your own.”
“I know,” she whispered as they reached their horses. Link helped her onto hers before they both made their way across Hyrule Field.
Zelda was in no hurry to get back, and Link matched whatever pace Zelda set.
“But why?” she asked again, a little more frustrated. This wasn’t the first time they’d had this conversation, and for some reason, she expected his answers to change.
She’d long since commanded him to ride and walk beside her when they were alone. She welcomed his company when she had it, and him walking behind her always frustrated her while trying to hold a discussion.
“If I don’t do it, I’ll be killed, and someone will replace me. My noncompliance will not change a thing. And if I can be honest, Princess, I’d rather be alive to be your guard than die in vain protest. Your father doesn’t care for me. I won’t be a martyr. I’ll just be another fallen soldier.”
The trees passed them by, and they rode into the wide expanse of the truest part of Hyrule Field, where the mountains in the distance were unobstructed by trees or castles or buildings. Small streams took the place of lakes, and the field was calling them closer with the light colors and gentle swaying grass.
“Have you ever let anyone go?” she asked, turning to him.
He looked at her with wide eyes. And though he knew her better, it almost felt like she was attempting to trap her into admitting something that could get him killed, and he immediately defaulted to defense, like the soldier that he was. “I would never! My command is to bring in all magic users for questioning. From there, it’s not in my hands. I cannot disobey my orders. If anyone found out, I’d be strung up beside them.”
“’If anyone found out?’” she asked curiously and uncompromising. She could see him squirm, and she didn’t care. She wasn’t trying to trap him, and her curiosity had gotten them both into far worse situations in the past. “What if you could guarantee that no one would ever find out. Would you do it?”
Link shook his head and made a contorted face that betrayed his stress. “I don’t know. It’s not a situation that will ever happen, so I don’t need to consider it. Besides, I am loyal to the monarch of Hyrule. I will not disobey, no matter my beliefs.” He turned to see her disappointed expression, and it pulled at something inside him that he often tried to ignore. He longed to comfort her, but this conversation could be treason. So he spoke true words that were still carefully cultivated to keep him safe. “Now, if you command me to stop when you’re Queen of Hyrule, I’ll have no choice but to gladly obey that command.”
Zelda smirked at him, blushing under his stare but let the conversation drop and returned her attention to the field. Too much prodding was suspicious, but she was allowed this much after watching the deaths. There was nothing suspicious after coming back from such a horrific event.
Suddenly, Zelda gasped and signaled for Link to stop and dismount with her. She ran over to a tree that stood alone in the field and fell to her knees, crawling over to the base of it. “Link, look!” she called behind her.
Two Silent Princesses bloomed fiercely, their blue and white petals enticing her over with the force a predator might attract prey. And with this flower, her absolute favorite in all Hyrule, she would happily be its prey and stare at it, study it, observe it.
The hair on her neck pricked again, and she knew that Link was looking at her, not the flower.
It wasn’t an unpleasant or even distracting sensation. She felt it so often as the Princess that she was able to tune it out in larger crowds. But when there were fewer people, she was more attuned to the feeling. And when she was just with Link, she felt it often.
“Link—” she said, twisting around to beckon him over, unsure if he simply hadn’t heard her. But she felt her cheeks immediately burn when she realized that his gaze was decidedly not near her face.
His eyes darted up to hers immediately, but there was no denying that he’d been caught. He grabbed the hair at the back of his neck and fisted it tight, cursing as he felt himself flushed and ready to die a little. Suddenly, the grass became terribly interesting, because he couldn’t stop staring at it, unwilling to let himself look at her again because she already knew where his focus had been. He debated apologizing or holding on to that last sliver of hope that she hadn’t actually noticed.
Zelda let out a nervous chuckle as she folded her hands in her lap while she sat back. But once she felt the nerves pass, she waved her hand dismissively and held one out to Link to encourage him to join her. “Come here.”
He was more than grateful that she didn’t bring it up. Link even debated taking her outstretched hand to let her pull him beside her, but after that, he couldn’t let himself slip around the Princess of Hyrule once again, and he knelt beside her, one knee down like he was bowing.
Zelda wished he could get comfortable around her, but she couldn’t blame him. He’d gotten too comfortable for a moment and been caught just seconds ago.
One thing that she liked the most about Link was that he often forgot himself around her. He treated her like a person, and not just a figurehead. And Link felt the same, basking in the rare courtesy that someone showed him. Zelda knew he was just a human, fallible, and imperfect.
They were each other’s haven when the rest of the world expected too much of them. Link was not a pawn, and Zelda was not a princess. They were simply friends.
“There’s two of them,” she said instead, hoping to take his mind off of things, to coax that easy friendship back out of him. “They’re so beautiful. It’s a shame how fast they wilt when indoors.”
“They’re your favorite,” he said simply, running a gloved hand over the petal. It wasn’t a question.
“They are. You knew that?”
“I do.”
She stared at him for a while longer before accepting that he wasn’t going to elaborate on how he knew. This wasn’t the first time she’d dragged him from his horse to look at flowers, mushrooms, bugs, or even frogs, so there was nothing to give her away by her reaction. He simply knew. He knew her.
Resting her chin in her hand, she stared at the flower. “Convince me not to run experiments on one of these in an attempt to domesticate it. Convince me to leave them both here.”
“I’d never think to try to deter you from your research, Princess.”
She grinned in his direction before biting her lip, one final consideration before she uprooted one of the flowers carefully from the ground and returned to her horse with Link beside her.
Days passed with little success in her experiments. The flower was withering quickly, and the edges especially were shriveling. Link returned to his other duties, and she to hers.
Nearly a week after taking the flower, it was near death, and she wished he had convinced her to leave it where it belonged.
“Princess?” Link’s voice called from outside her door.
Zelda stood up from her desk and looked around, flicking her fingers at some clothes until they moved into her closet, and then again at the bed that she’d taken a nap in that the maids had never fixed—unbeknownst to them that she’d slept at all. The blankets returned to their pin-straight smoothness, and the pillows carefully arranged themselves. She stood in front of her door and waited for them to stop moving before turning the handle for Link.
“Hello,” she said pleasantly.
“Princess,” he greeted and stepped into her room, looking around.
It was a nightly inspection for anything amiss, something her soldiers had done since she was a little girl. She was used to the invasion of privacy for the sake of her safety by now, but when it was Link on guard, it always gave her some time to talk to him, even if it made her slightly embarrassed to have him go through some of her things. But shame was something she’d long-since set aside when it came to this nightly ritual. At this point, half the guards in the castle knew what was in her room from this task.
He began in her closet, looking intently enough to make sure there was no hidden assailant, but fast enough to avoid invading her privacy too much.
“How was training?” she asked curiously.
Link chuckled and turned to her, calling her out on that question. “Why do you ask? I saw you come by.”
She blushed and tripped over her foot before steadying herself. She hadn’t realized he’d seen her. She bit her lip, following beside him as he made his way around her room. “Well… from a knight’s perspective, I mean.”
He stopped his search for a moment to look at her, his eyebrow raised suspiciously, and—dare she even think it—a little bit flirtatiously. The corner of his mouth lifted slowly. “It was fine, Princess.”
He returned his attention to his search, walking beside her desk, his eyes trailing along her open books, quills, the wilting flower, and her bag. He then looked under the desk before moving on.
“I’m so bored,” she whined, leaning against the wall beside him. “Give me more details than that. Humor me, at least.”
“You’re bored? I couldn’t tell,” he snorted, this time a full smile gracing his face. “Unfortunately, there are no details, Princess. It was just… fine.” Then he got onto his knees to look under her bed.
With him on his hands and knees and his upper half hidden under the bed, Zelda understood the appeal of letting her eyes linger low on someone one considered attractive. Though it was not for the first time that she admired him, she did connect her thought back to the way she’d caught him just a week ago staring at her.
She crossed her arms, and both cursed and praised whoever had come up with the form-fitting design on the royal guard uniform pants. He wiggled a lot too so he could see all angles under the bed, and Zelda bit her lip as she indulged in the moment, probably more than Link had the other day when she’d caught him ogling her. Zelda was, after all, a scholar who loved to observe her specimens.
Link always moved quickly in everything he did. It’s why he was primarily appointed to guard her so often: his reflexes, his skill, his speed; he was all but a machine. It was no surprise that he was quick to search under the bed as well, always courteous to keep her privacy as untouched as possible. So, he efficiently removed himself from under the bed and turned to Zelda before she had the time to look away.
Blushing viciously, Zelda, unlike Link, managed to keep Link’s gaze, undeterred by being caught. Link had gone red, but as he pushed himself to his feet and started to walk to her windows, he let his arm brush hers, a sly grin on his face to match her own.
Zelda bobbed her head to the side triumphantly, following him to the balcony, as she always did.  He looked over the edge, and Zelda looked as well, wishing she knew exactly what ‘signs’ he was looking for. Was there meant to be a person on her roof?
She felt that sensation on her neck again, only this time, she let herself pretend not to notice until she’d swept the entirety of the roof with her eyes before meeting his.
They were soft as they watched her.
She turned towards him and hesitated for a moment. “So? Am I in danger?”
“You’re safe, Princess.”
“Thank you. Will you be in for the morning round? Or are you going to see your mother?”
“How do you know—”
“You mentioned it a few weeks ago.”
His eyebrows went up. “You remembered?”
“I do listen when you speak, Link.”
He took a deep breath and nodded. “Yes, I’m most likely going to ride out for the day, but I’ll be here in the morning.”
“Okay,” she smiled, following him back into the room as he made for her door. “I’ll see you then.”
“Goodnight, Princess.”
“Goodnight, Link,” she said, closing the door.
She leaned against it and took a deep breath to steady herself before returning to her workbench and her wilting flower.
“I shouldn’t have done this to you,” she whispered to it as if it could hear her apology. She set to stroking the petals gently, and as she did, color went back into it, straightening the stem out, returning the petals to their softness and former glory, flourishing and beautiful and alive. It made her giggle, as magic sometimes did when it felt good. Breathing life back into something always felt particularly special.
She stood up, satisfied, and closed her eyes to picture an outfit as she ran her hand just in front of herself. When she opened her eyes, the clothes she’d been wearing had swapped places with the pajamas on her chair, and she was comfortably ready for bed.
The magic was practically bursting from her, and once she ducked under the covers, she passed a ball of light between her hands, letting it hover as she did. It soothed her and let her release a lot of her magic at once, which made it easier to control in the long run.
Once she’d tired out, she drifted into a peaceful sleep.
Until hours later when there was a knock on her door.
“Princess?”
Zelda groaned and cracked her eye open, scowling at the bright sun coming through her window. “Is it morning already?” she called back, faceplanting her pillow.
She could practically hear Link chuckle. “Unfortunately, it is, Princess.”
“Ugh!” she groaned, covering her eyes with her arm. “Give me a moment.” She closed her eyes again, and at once she felt her heavy eyes thank her, completely at peace, as if she could fall immediately back to sleep.
“Princess?” he knocked again.
She sat up with a start. She knew Link would never knock twice in a row after she asked him to wait. “Link? Did I fall back asleep?”
This time, she was positive he laughed. “I believe you might have.”
“I’m so sorry,” she hissed, grabbing her robe off the bedpost and wrapping it around herself, stumbling for the door. “I’m sorry,” she said again when she opened it, nearly falling into Link as she tried to get her sleep-addled brain to work.
He came into the room and looked around. “No need to apologize. This can’t be the most fun wakeup call to have to go through each day.”
She cleared her throat and carefully waved her finger quickly in front of her, ensuring that her breath didn’t smell of sleep before she spoke. Link turned to her and she felt the prickle on her neck, but she was still bleary eyed as she tried to talk to him. “It’s understandable. Ever since Twinrova, I don’t hate this routine as much as I used to. Though I would like a little bit more sleep in the mornings.”
Her eyes finally cleared enough to realize he was staring at her, his eyes looking her over in a way that she’d only seen a few times from him, and mostly when he thought she wasn’t looking. Last time he’d looked at her like this, she’d been wearing a ballgown.
This time, she realized suddenly, she was standing beside Link looking a mess. She’d normally remembered to tame her frazzled bed-hair or change clothes before the guards entered in the morning, but she’d forgotten. It wasn’t the first time this had happened, but it was the first time she’d forgotten with Link as the guard. And he was the only one that she blushed around.
She was in her light robe, her heavier ones put away for the season; her shirt was too small on her, riding up over her stomach, but she welcomed that and a pair of shorts in the summer heat. Feeling her hair, she gently smoothed it down, though she could feel the wild tangles from a fitful, warm night. She tugged the robe closed and bit her lip, blushing as she closed her eyes and turned away, cursing herself again.
“Sorry,” she finally said, when she had the courage to look back at him. “Excuse my appearance.”
He took a deep breath and cleared his throat, finally coming back to himself. “You look…” he didn’t finish, and laughed softly to himself as red spread along his neck. Then he simply nodded at her and hurried to her closet to start his routine.
When Link’s back was to her, Zelda covered her eyes and groaned, wondering if she could tell him not to look at her long enough to at least switch into pants rather than shorts. But then she would be announcing that she’d be changing behind his back, and that made her feel distinctly less comfortable than simply enduring her embarrassment from looking like a bridge troll.
Link passed her, his eyes sweeping over her almost subconsciously before he kept up his search. He reached her desk and stopped, his fingers trailing along the stem of the Silent Princess.
Zelda watched him as she tied her robe closed rather than holding it before going over to him. “That’s the one we found last week. My experiments are slowing the decaying process.”
“Slowing?” he asked carefully, rubbing the petal lightly. “Was this here last night?”
“Ye—” she started before she froze. Last night, it had been withered and shriveled. And Link was keen enough to know that. Her heart raced until he finally glanced over at her, curiosity burning in his eyes, his hand still on the flower.
“No,” she finally said. “I had a different flower here that I was looking at. One that didn’t survive an experiment. I worked a little longer after you left.”
He stared at her for a long moment, but not with the same look he’d had when he’d seen what she was wearing. This was distinctly pensive, and she could see the wheels in his brain spinning rapidly. For once, she cursed that he was smarter than everyone gave him credit for. He thumbed the flower one more time before circling around the room to get to her bed.
She followed behind him so he couldn’t see the absolute stress on her face, or the way she kept fisting the roots of her hair as she thought about her carelessness.
He knelt down, and turned to her, catching her in her worried state. He froze on his knees, his brow furrowing. “Are you alright this morning, Princess?”
She let go of her hair and nodded. “Just tired. Are you excited to see you mother? When was the last time you visited her?”
Link took a deep breath and shrugged as he looked under the bed. “I’m not going. I was called on another… assignment.”
Assignments. That’s what they often called apprehending magic users.
Zelda sat on the bed and heard Link groan before he pulled his head out.
“Sorry,” she said quickly.
Link leaned an elbow against the bed and watched her from his knees. She grabbed one of her fringed pillows, needing something to distract her hands until she finally turned to him. “Is there any situation that you’d defy my father and just not do it? Just let them be in peace, or refuse to go despite your orders?”
“No,” he said, too quickly.
“What if it was just to make me happy? Would you do it then?”
That stopped him, and he hesitated, staring at her as he thought. She could see the conflict warring in him. He was like her in that he truly didn’t want to apprehend magic users unless they posed a threat, like anyone else. But his loyalty to the crown… it went beyond his loyalty to her, and she knew it. The answer to this question would only hurt them both, and she knew that too.
“No,” he finally said, looking away, ashamed of his own answer. He stood up without another look at her and went to the window and balcony.
She didn’t follow him this time, sulking on the bed instead, as if she’d expected a different answer from him. And when he returned, she looked back at him. “Do you think they’re all evil, like my father does?”
“No,” he said, again too quickly, too certainly. “I think we’re all capable of great evil, magic or not. The measure of a good person is one who doesn’t succumb to the pull of that evil. Magic isn’t involved in that decision.”
“So, you think I’m capable of great evil?” she asked, only partially teasing him.
“You’re the only exception,” he said with a grin.
She smiled and nodded, but it was laced with sadness. “Thank you. Be safe while you’re out there.”
He nodded in return. “I should be back by about midafternoon.”
“Okay,” she sighed, and he left without another word. Her head slammed back into the mattress and she longed for a way to protect more people like her.
She glanced at her desk where she could see her Silent Princess and groaned. She could barely keep herself safe. How could she protect others?
Zelda was sorely reminded of her powerlessness when her father made her go to the magic user’s ‘trial’ the next day, a trial that was preceded over by the King himself.
She stood on the balcony with Link behind her as she watched her father in his throne, head of the proceedings. There was never a fair trial, and the accused were almost always found guilty.
This time though, it was a little harder to deny.
“You are sentenced to burn at the stake until dead,” her father said after hearing everything he needed to. No matter how many times he said it, it was still spat with as much resolve and vigor as the first time he’d uttered those words.
“No!” the man yelled, rattling the chains around his bound wrists.
Link took a step forward as the room shook with the man’s rage.
Literally.
“No!” he screamed again, this time, his eyes darting to Zelda and then back to her father. “You and your family will die for what you’ve done to us!”
Zelda sucked in a breath and shuddered, but she gasped when she felt Link’s hand slide into her own. His other hand was on the sword at his back, always ready to move.
Their eyes met for a brief moment, and he tightened his grip reassuringly, which she returned before they both watched the man’s fit before the throne as soldiers tried to get near him, only to be thrown back against the wall by the unseen force of his magic.
Biting her lip, Zelda debated whether or not to intervene, but her decision was made for her when she saw the man turn his attention to a display of weapons that began to shake loose and hovered at the ready, like projectiles.
Zelda clenched her free hand, holding on to the weapons to prevent him from flinging them anywhere. It was difficult to hold so many objects still, but she kept them tight as she felt his magic tug against hers.
He was visibly rattled by the intervention, his head whipping around to try to find the source. But the distraction gave a guard the opportunity to try to apprehend him.
The man went to jerk his head, to send the guard flying, but Zelda dropped the weapons and curved her wrist, holding his head still so the magic was derailed, and the force hit the wall instead, sending a picture crashing to the ground, but not a person.
Gasping in shock, the man tugged at his chin. But the magic was like a hand, and he followed it straight to her eyes. He scoffed, his wide and accusing glare chilling her to the core.
Her hand fell and she let go of him, her heart stopping completely in that moment. He knew it was her.
She and Link tightened their grip on each other as soon as the man’s attention went to her, but the man let out another scream. This time, flames roared from his mouth, and straight towards Zelda.
She didn’t realize she was on the ground until she saw the flames above her. Link had her cocooned between him and the stone balcony, his head shielding her from the worst heat of the fire.
His reactions were fast though, and he pulled her to her knees, dragging her beside him to get her off the balcony. Zelda noticed a flag above had also caught fire, but Link had her out before she could discern any other damage. He didn’t care if the whole castle caught fire; Zelda was his priority.
He pulled her behind him as other guards ran into the room, likely to deal with the fire. But that wasn’t Link’s responsibility.
He grabbed a passing guard. “Hey, tell the King I’m bringing the Princess back to her room for safety.”
“Sure, Link,” she said before hurrying into the throne room.
Link said no more until he’d practically pushed Zelda all the way back to her own room. Zelda was still rattled, and she let him guide her as her thoughts were stuck on the way that man had looked at her. What was he saying now? She couldn’t focus on the halls or the doors.
So she was beyond surprised when Link gently placed a hand on her cheek and let the other run through her hair.
“Are you okay?” he breathed, looking her over for any wounds or injuries. “Were you burned?”
“No, I’m fine. Are you?”
“Yeah, I am.” He stopped and stared at her, eyes wide as he breathed through an unfamiliar sensation that threatened to steal the air from his lungs.
Link had been a royal guard for years. He’d worked closely with Zelda for quite a while. But he’d never been in a situation where she’d actually been in danger. Sure, he’d cleared bandits off the road, or taken down a bokoblin hunting party before they could reach the Princess, but he’d had those situations entirely under control. This? The flames had nearly hit her. If he’d been any slower…
“Thank you,” she whispered, stopping his train of thought when she took the opportunity to lightly brush back some of his hair that had fallen loose of his ponytail and into his face. She tucked a strand behind his ear and let her hand trail along his skin while he watched, too nervous to move with her that close.
Her door swung open, and Link was in front of her with his sword drawn before she could even gasp.
But he quickly sheathed it and dropped to his knee, head bowed as King Rhoam rushed in and grabbed Zelda.
“Are you okay? They’re taking that demon away now for an immediate execution. He was raving, threatening you. Saying it was your fault as they dragged him away. Link, I want you to stay alert for the rest of the day and night. Don’t leave her side, do you understand? I don’t trust him, even in death.”
“Yes, Your Majesty.”
“Good. I’m going to deal with that monster. I don’t want you there today, Zelda.”
“Okay,” she muttered as Rhoam stormed back out of her room, slamming her door violently.
She was glad she wasn’t going to be there. Rhoam was going to make it hurt.
“He said it was your fault?” Link asked, his brow furrowing.
Zelda shrugged and leaned against her desk, staring down at her Silent Princess. “He said it was the Royal Family’s fault. He must have meant me indirectly.”
Link moved up beside her, his eyes lingering on the flower as well before she felt the prickle of his gaze. “You’re trembling. You should sit and breathe. Deep breaths.”
She sat on the bed and pulled her legs up, adjusting the bottom of her dress over her knees. “I wish I could have been born normal.”
Link knelt beside her. “If you were normal, we’d never have met, so I’m glad you’re not.”
She smiled as he misinterpreted what she meant. She let him. He was cute, his eyes still wide with worry. “Yeah, that’s a perk.”
Link was on her heels the rest of the day while she did her tasks and entertained herself in the library. He was quiet and far more watchful, and Link’s orders were reiterated to him by the King that night at dinner.
Rhoam pointed his fork threateningly in Link’s direction where he stood. “You do not leave her side tonight; do you understand?”
Link now stood in the corner of her bedroom, staring at the wall like a punished child while she changed.
“My father was literal, huh? Not to leave my side,” she mused, opting for a longer pair of pants this time.
“Mhmm,” he mumbled.
“Are you going to sleep at all? Swap guards?”
“No.”
Zelda crawled under her blankets. This wasn’t the first time a guard had to be in her room overnight to watch for a threat either, but again, it was the first time it was Link. “You can turn now.”
He hesitated before carefully looking at her. “I’ll just patrol the room throughout the night. Any footsteps you hear will likely be mine, so try to sleep through it.”
“Okay,” she said, familiar with that speech from the past.
He nodded awkwardly before heading out to the balcony. He turned to her once more. “Goodnight, Princess. I’m glad you’re okay.”
She smiled at him, trying to reassure him that this was normal for her. “You as well, Link.”
But she couldn’t sleep.
She heard his footsteps, sure, but for the most part, she was distracted by that prickle on her neck brushing over her often, letting her know that Link was watching her. Each time, her heart sped up, and she cracked her eyes open if she wasn’t facing him. She was usually better at ignoring it, but she had a feeling it was distinctly because it was Link, and she was hyperaware of him anyway.
She’d finally drifted off, but she awoke again some time later. The prickle was there, but it was different, and almost entirely foreign to her. In fact, she knew he wasn’t looking in her direction because of how different it felt. This wasn’t the same sensation at all. Her hairs stood up on her arms and the back of her neck, and she was immediately tense. But she sat up and opened her eyes, blinking the sleep from them and rubbing them as if that would wipe away the memory. Perhaps it had been a bad dream that stirred her.
Then she felt Link looking at her. That was familiar.
She turned to where he stood half in, half out between her room and the balcony, leaning against the frame. He was silhouetted by the light of the night sky, so she couldn’t see his face, but she didn’t need to.
“You alright?” he whispered.
“Yeah. Just felt weird. Probably a bad dream. It was so strange.”
“Okay. Don’t wake yourself up taking to me,” he chuckled.
“I like talking to you.”
He smiled at her, his teeth catching the moonlight before he turned his head into it. “You too, Princess.”
She watched him for a while, admiring the way the light framed him and drew her eye. Her chin was against her pulled-up knee that she hugged close to her. It was strange to realize that she could watch him for so long without feeling bored or embarrassed, enjoying the many different ways the moonlight caught his face.
But then, she felt her neck prickle again, and she sat up straight. Link turned at her sudden movement.
“Link, come here!” she said, too frightened to whisper.
He was by her side in an instant, sword drawn from her tone. “What is it?”
“Someone’s watching from the dark,” she breathed, this time, too hushed for anything but Link’s ears.
“Where? Did you see them?”
“No, but they’re there. Trust me.”
He glanced at her for a second before he nodded and held his sword ready in his hand while he searched the room slowly and carefully.
But the feeling never went away from her neck, even when he wasn’t looking. She covered her mouth, unnerved by how strong it was. Like they were right behind her, breathing on her skin, drawing every goosebump out of hiding.
She shot forward with a shriek, crawling to the end of the bed before turning to stare at the empty space in front of her. The sensation was burning.
Link was at the foot of her bed, sword raised, waiting for the threat.
She could feel it, this time right in front of her, hovering just in front of her face. She whimpered and started to crawl back until she’d run out of room, and then leaned back into Link while he watched her, confused. To him, there was nothing. There was no sensation, no prickle on his neck, no goosebumps. The only fear he felt was because Zelda was in such a panic. He almost wondered if maybe she were still dreaming.
“Zelda?” he whispered, one hand snaking around her waist to support her as she kept moving backwards until she was flush against him, even pushing him off balance in her attempt to keep moving back.
“It’s here. It’s right here. Link… please…”
He held her tighter, his arm completely wrapped across her waist, his eyes fluttering around the empty space on her bed. But he could feel her shuddering violently. And he trusted Zelda, even if he didn’t know what for.
In a single motion, he spun Zelda off the bed and thrust out his sword into the air.
An inhuman figure screeched out into the darkness, taking shape as it writhed in its pain.
Link jumped back at the sudden appearance, but he recovered fast enough to push Zelda back when the creature slinked onto the floor and began to crawl toward them. Link stabbed it again, and it howled.
“Where are the guards?” she yelled as Link kept pushing her towards the hall.
But at that, he stopped her, grabbing her wrist and pulling her behind him instead. They’d have come in with all the noise. Either they weren’t outside for some reason, or they were killed.
The creature calmed down again and stood taller than any person Zelda had ever seen. Link stepped forward with his sword, and this time, the figure sidestepped his stab and backhanded Zelda, sending her crashing into the wall with inhuman force before turning its attention to Link. Sharp claws pried at the chain-link armor Link wore while he struggled to get up, screaming as the claws began to pierce straight through the armor and started tearing at his skin.
Zelda blinked and crawled away from her wall, pushing the hair from her face so she could see. And she could see Link bleeding.
“Link!” she screamed, her hand flying out on instinct. The figure was thrown back as she released her power, and Link sat up, one hand over his wound as he stared at her in shock.
She stumbled, her head throbbing from the impact, but she made her way to stand over Link while he gawked at her.
These consequences were ones she was willing to deal with later. She wasn’t going to let Link die just to keep her secret.
The creature hissed and crawled up on to the wall before flinging itself at Zelda, taking her down to the ground with ease. Its sharp fingers, no longer a full claw, dug into the skin at her neck and she tried to pry it loose with her magic, which was stronger than her actual grip. But the creature was strong too.
Until it was screeching again.
Fingers slackened their hold on her, and Zelda looked up to see Link’s sword through its head as he clutched his bleeding wound. It slithered back and rematerialized on the other side of the room.
Link stood over Zelda. “You okay?”
She checked her skin, her hands coming back bloody. “I don’t know yet.”
It let out a roar as its shape changed again, and suddenly there were tentacle-like appendages, one going for Zelda and pinning her down, and the other clawing at Link’s armor again, the tip a sharp point that was relentless in its attempt to reach a vital organ.
Link screamed, stabbing futilely at the tendril as the metal of his armor kept being torn away like chipping paint.
“Link!” Zelda yelled again, managing to gather enough magic to push the creature’s arm off her. She scampered to her feet, slipping in a small pool of blood before she stood between the creature and Link, flinching back nervously.
She closed her eyes and drew from Link, feeling his gaze on her, feeling his presence. Feeling his wound. She was exposing herself for his sake, and that drew her powers behind her, rearing up.
Her eyes fluttered and her head throbbed, but when she opened her eyes, the creature was outlined perfectly for her rather than a dark mass of limbs, and she sent a burst of bright light at its center, holding it there until it became too much for them both. But she shook with effort, keeping it there a moment longer.
And the creature burst apart into darkness, disappearing like smoke.
She collapsed, and heard Link hit the floor right behind her.
Despite his injury, Link’s eyes were wide on her.
“You?”
“Me.”
The door burst open, as if the creature had been holding it shut, and a hoard of guards poured into her room, followed shortly by the king himself.
“Zelda!” he yelled, pushing past everyone. “What happened?” he shot a look behind him, “Get the physician! They’re hurt!”
Zelda turned to Link, her eyes wide and fearful. He clutched his wound tightly and forced himself to his knee, to bow before the king.
“We heard screams. What happened?” Rhoam asked again, looking around in an effort to find a body. “Was this magic, or did someone escape?”
Link turned to Zelda over his shoulder and saw a tear run down her cheek as she looked at her father, and then at Link.
“It was magic,” Link breathed, realizing just how much it hurt to talk.
“Someone was in my daughter’s room?”
“They…” he froze and turned back to Zelda and then to Rhoam. “It came through the wall behind the Princess’ bed. It was a figure at first, and I stabbed it, but it completely reformed as something else, like it wasn’t really alive. Each time, it got a bit stronger and then…” he stopped and winced, taking a breath and another opportunity to look at Zelda. She was shaking.
“It had the Princess down on the ground, its… arm thing on her throat. And I stabbed it through its head, which made it… well… die, I suppose. It turned to nothing and disappeared. Once it did, its hold on the door must have released because that’s when you came in.”
Zelda’s eyes were locked on Link, wide and afraid and surprised and thankful all at once.
“Link,” she breathed before relieved tears started to rush down her cheeks, and she threw herself into his arms. “Thank you.”
He returned the gesture, biting down the pain it was causing him to do so as one of his arms still covered his bleeding wound. “You’re safe,” he whispered, and she tugged him tighter at the secondary meaning.
Rhoam put his hand on Zelda’s shoulder comfortingly until the physicians ran in and began to take care of the both of them.
That was the last Zelda heard of Link for two weeks while he recovered. She’d spent about a week of that time recovering herself, but it wasn’t until the night shift when she heard his voice sound out behind her door.
“Princess?”
“Link!” she called, hurrying to the door and whipping it open. “You’re back? You’re okay?”
He nodded and patted his chest, as if that proved that it no longer hurt. And with that, she pulled him against her and wrapped her arms tightly around his neck.
“Thank the Goddess!” she breathed, letting go to close the door and to back away from him, to give him space from her. “I’m sorry.”
“Why?”
“I… you must… I’m… do you remember what happened?”
“Yes.”
“All of it?”
“All of it.”
That almost made her more confused.
“You didn’t tell my father. You said you wouldn’t disobey his orders, even for me. You were meant to tell him about me. What I am. What I can do.”
“You were never the one in danger while I was obeying orders.”
“You’re not… afraid of me?”
He took a step forward and held out his hand to her. “I could never be afraid of you, Zelda.”
She smiled, relief flowing through her just before the rush of butterflies hit. She took his hand and squeezed it, and a deep, unfamiliar longing settled over her. For the first time since her mother died, someone knew about her. And he wasn’t running.
“How long?” he asked. “Have you had… magic?”
“Forever. My mother helped me before she was killed.”
“You had it then? When they ran all those tests?”
She nodded and let go of him so she could sit on the bed. He sat on the other end.
“I saw the flower. That was you, wasn’t it?”
“Yes. Was my story that easy to see through?”
“No. I believed you.”
“Just like you did when I told you that thing was in front of me. Why?”
He ran a hand along his face. “I don’t know. I just trust you.” He chuckled to himself. “A lot makes sense now: your attitude towards the deaths, the flower, that day with the horse…”
“You noticed that?”
He grinned. “The tournament?”
She grimaced. “Yes, but he was going to kill that man!”
“That dinner a few months ago?”
“Okay, but she deserved that!”
“My mother getting better?”
Zelda looked away and nodded.
“Thank you. You risked exposing yourself for my family.” He scooted a little closer. “Did you actually do something to that fire breathing guy?”
“I did.”
“You’re incredible.”
“I’m dangerous,” she scoffed, glancing at her door as if her father might pop out at any second.
He reached out and ran his knuckles lightly along the side of her neck where a discolored scar marked where the creature had grabbed her. “I trust you.”
She flinched before settling into his touch. “I think it goes without saying that you can’t tell anyone. My trust, and my life, rest entirely in your hands. And as uncomfortable as I am with that concept, you’re possibly the only one I actually trust with my life.”
Link smirked and blushed, but he tried to play it off. “You don’t trust your other guards?”
“I do, but if anyone other than you had been in here with me, I believe they’d have told my father about me.”
“Well,” he said, standing up. “You don’t have to worry about me. I wouldn’t tell the Goddess herself if She asked.”
He looked in her closet, remembering he had an actual job to do.
Zelda followed him, as she usually did. “If the Goddess asks, you’re allowed to tell.”
“You don’t even need guards, do you? If I wasn’t there, you’d have been fine.”
“Well, I couldn’t find it, so I did need you to stab it. And you’re a very good distraction.”
He stopped and raised an eyebrow in her direction.
“Oh, no, I meant you were good at distracting it! Not that you’re a distraction to me.”
One of his full-toothed smiles graced his face. “I didn’t take it that way, but now I know.”
Groaning, she regretted how often she talked, especially to him.
The path around the room was familiar to her by now, so as Link went to check under her desk, she waved her finger and pushed the chair out of the way for him.
He froze, and it was her turn to be triumphant.
Link gently placed a hand on the chair and glanced under the desk before pushing it back in, determined not to look at her, not to give her that satisfaction.
But she already had it.
Wind
Part 7 of my Hero of Wild series! Wow we’re here already
I’ve had this idea for so long and I finally get to write it! Uhh I don’t have any clever jokes for April Fools, so take this instead. Honestly the most April Fools thing about this is I didn't get a chance to edit much sooo sorry about that.
Hope you enjoy!
Wind narrowed his eyes at the scene before him.
Why did Twilight get to be best friends with the mysterious new hero!
Of course Wind was happy Wild seemed to be finding his place among the others. It started when they found out he had the cooking skills of a castle chef. No, scratch that, his skills had to succeed any castle chef. He had tried food in Warriors and Twilight’s Hyrule Castles, and nothing beat what Wild could do with time and a proper set up!
Man, he was hungry.
Not the point!
The point was, Wind watched Wild silently laugh at something Twilight said to him, Wind couldn’t help but huff. Jealous wasn’t really the way he would describe his feelings. Wind was happy when he saw Wild getting along so well with Twilight, especially with how shy he seemed to be around other Hylians.
That was another mysterious trait about Wild. His name, Wild. It implied someone savage and not caring of others and their rules. That wasn’t Wild.
Wind discovered what his name really meant. If Wind’s name was the gentle tuseling of hair from the high seas, then Wild’s meant the course but soft feeling of grass beneath one’s feet.
Their names were similar, not just in the lettering, but in the feelings they both provided. When Wind thought of their names, he thought of freedom. And with Wild perhaps a few fires along the way.
And Wind was gonna be his friend dammit.
~
His sign was outdated, the other Links weren’t the only ones who didn’t understand him. Like many things, sign has evolved without him. The only one who truly understood that was Zelda, and she was in Hateno.
Wild didn’t have many memories, but he did remember talking to her after they finally got along, only with her. Verbally. No matter how hard he tried he couldn’t even remember what his voice sounded like.
Would he have a similar accent to Zelda? Posh and regal? Probably not, accents could be changed and acclimated and it had been over one hundred years since Wild had heard anyone have that accent but Zelda, and perhaps the ghost of the king. No, his accent would probably develop into a mix of things.
  As for his voice itself, would it be soft and quiet? Loud and course? Did the two feel different when you spoke? Sure Wild had made noises before. He laughed when he was alone, sometimes the noise just bubbled up and he couldn’t stop it. But talking? Wild didn’t know how, and that was embarrassing. He could read, he could write, and he could understand how other people spoke. He couldn’t speak.
He had watched how others talked. He tried to copy it. When they said an ‘oh’ sound, they made the same shape with their mouth. He was positive he was doing it right, he copied it exactly, but nothing pushed passed his mouth. Nothing of importance anyway.
Just as it had the past couple of days, Wild’s mind flashed back to Sky’s offer. He had seemed so genuine, it didn’t seem to be something the man would offer simply to be nice. But perhaps the man hoped Wild would forget about it, maybe Sky himself had already forgotten about it. Still, there was just a small ember of hope in him.
He imagined himself finally keeping up with conversations, laughing loudly, maybe even surprising Zelda. He shouldn’t let himself get lost in fantasies but he couldn’t help it, not when it was a small possibility. There was no telling if Sky’s offer was truly genuine, or that Wild would actually be able to follow through and speak, but what if he tried.
Still that would require reaching out, approaching Sky and asking for help with one of the most basic actions one could perform, something many did without even thinking about it.
Yet Sky understood that, didn’t he? He had been open with Wild, told him of his childhood struggles. Perhaps there really was no shame in asking. Wild let out a low sigh, not aware of the figure stalking him from behind, eyes narrowed slightly, plotting.
~
Now, how was he to approach him? Wind mused on the answer as the group walked forward. No one had claimed this Hyrule as their own yet, the best they could do is walk the main path and search for a town, and keep their guard up.
Truthfully Wind didn’t know Wild well enough yet to determine the best approach. Would a direct question work? He had tried that before and had been mostly brushed off, but that was before Wild knew who they were. Wind decided ultimately to be honest and say whatever was on his mind, Wild could probably tell when someone was being dishonest or not genuine.
Twilight bid Wild a short goodbye before speeding up to talk to Time near the front of the group, and Wind saw his chance. Wind took a deep breath and trotted up to be beside Wild, giving the fellow teen plenty of room as the rest of the group tried to. They did the same thing for the more antisocial Links at the beginning of their group as well.
“Hi Wild! Breakfast this morning was really good.” Wind complimented, trying to start up a casual conversation. It was true, the food Wild called ‘crepes’ had absolutely blown Wind’s mind. Maybe Wild would be more inclined to talk if it was about something the teen enjoyed, and Wind could tell he really loved cooking.
‘Thank you’. Wind felt success at the small sign, preparing to talk again before Wild continued his signs. ‘There are a lot of flavors’. It took Wind a moment to remember the word for flavors, but Wild signed slow enough for him to figure it out. ‘Depends on the ingredients.’
“I bet! Feel free to experiment with ingredients, I'm sure we’ll all thank you for it.” Wind joked, chest feeling light at the small smile he earned from Wild.
‘Will do.’ Wild joked back, and Wind bit his lip at the lull in conversation. Now or never.
“We don’t know each other very well.” Wind observed. “Can we ask each other questions?” Wind didn’t know what making friends was like in Wild’s Hyrule, but at Outset it was very forward, hopefully he wasn’t crossing a line. Wild’s steps seemed to falter for a minute, and Wind felt another spike of worry, before Wild nodded.
“Really? You don’t have to.” Wind assured, fearing Wild was only saying yes to be polite. Wild nodded once more, and Wind’s eyes lit up in excitement.
“What’s your favorite color? Your tunic is blue like mine! Where’d you get it? Where’s your Zelda? Where are you from? In your Hyrule I mean. Do you have a favorite animal? What-”
“Woah there Wind.” Warriors physically stepped into the very one-sided conversation, placing a firm but gentle hand on the sailor’s shoulder. “Give him a minute to answer.” Warriors noticed the wide eyes Wild held under his hood and his twitching fingers.
“Oh! Um, sorry Wild.” Wind rubbed his neck, embarrassed. He just couldn’t decide what to ask first!
‘Don’t have one. Zelda made it. In Hateno. Everywhere. I like horses.’ Wind’s eyes lit up, excited someone had kept up with questions, but halted himself from asking anymore.
Wild however, felt sadness bloom in his chest further.
He wanted to say that his favorite color depended on the day, on what marvels his Hyrule had in store for him.
He wanted to say Zelda made it for the champion, her duties as a princess, but she was a scholar at heart and she was pouring over books and reaching out to leaders to make her kingdom better as they spoke.
He wanted to say that he loved his horses and the companionship they provided, but he thought bears and elk were fun to ride and foxes were so cute with their fluffy tails and huge yawns he only killed them when absolutely necessary.
He wanted to say that, but he didn’t. Because he couldn’t.
Before Wild could raise his hands and ask a question in return, a shout was heard from the front of the group.
“Watch out!” Twilight yelled, unsheathing his sword. What? Wild’s head whipped around, eyes scanning for any sign of a threat. He summoned his sword with the others, lucky enough to have a royal broadsword with minimal damage. The rest of the group stood in different stances, ranging from wide to more narrow and showing how different they were from one another. It appeared they were all waiting for the enemy to make the first move. And make the first move they did.
 A creature launched out of the trees in an instant, right towards Warriors, who expertly lifted his shield  to protect himself.
“They’ve surrounded us!” Called Legend, blocking another creature attacking him from the other side of the path. Wild could now see they looked like a different version of Lizalfos, green scales shimmering in the sun contrasting the pale milky yellow of their stomachs. They didn’t look like his Lizalfos, their heads rounder and bodies thicker, but that was something Wild would need to get used to.
“Keep an eye out for the black one!” Warriors shouted to their group. Black one? Did they not have black Lizalfos? Something in Wild’s head screamed at him and he summoned his shield from his slate and parried a strong hit from yet another of the creatures. They really were surrounded, but Wild was used to fighting this amount by now. He raised his hand to his slate to summon his bomb arrows before pausing in growing realization. What was he thinking? He would hit his comrades!
His hesitance resulted in a strong punch to the chest, Wild’s breath caught and he stumbled back, running right into Sky behind him who was fighting off his own Lizalfos. Wild quickly recovered, almost dodging the next attack before realizing that if he did the creature’s sword would ram right into Sky’s chest. Wild clumsily blocked, chest constricting, desperate to get away and cursing himself for his own weaknesses. Quickly he lurched to the side before the Lizalfos could raise his sword, and ran right into Legend this time.
“Watch it!” Legend snarled, not even noticing who it was in the heat of battle. Wild’s eyes darted around, looking for any opening, anything to do. If he could get into a tree he could jump out and take them out with his arrows, no, no opening. He continued to use his sword and shield, hyper aware of all the bodies surrounding him that weren’t enemies.
And at the worst possible moment, Wild’s shield broke. He really should have expected it.
The Lizalfos made a deep growl in its throat, smashing its shield into Wild’s head causing the boy to stumble and fall, landing on his back, his sword skidding away from him. The Lizalfos didn’t hesitate, raising its sword to plunge into Wild. This was going to hurt…
With a cry from the left, Wild watched in awe as a small body parried the sword above him, Wind. The boy swung his sword in an arch, cutting right into the Lizalfos chest. It was shallow, but it allowed Wind to gain the upper hand. How had he made that big an arch without hitting anyone? Wind launched himself from the ground, mercilessly driving his sword into the Lizalfos’ chest, crashing them both to the ground.
As the other Links finished up their own fights, ensuring they were truly out of enemies, Wild stared in awe and shame. Everyone had taken out at least one enemy, everyone but him. Wind had to step in and save him. Wild’s cheeks were bright red, an uncomfortable heat across his face, ears and neck. Without thinking Wild yanked his hood higher, chest constricting. They were all looking at him, they were all seeing how inept he was at this.
“Are you okay? I think he got hit in the head!” Wind called out to the other Links. Oh, so that’s what felt wet on his face. Oh well, head wounds bleed a lot. Wild silently begged Wind not to draw anymore attention to him. He just wanted to forget this ever happened. They were all looking at him.
“I have a potion!” Hyrule called, rushing over. Wild shook his head as Hyrule approached him. He was fine, he didn’t need it. He had already messed up.
‘Fine’. Wild signed as Hyrule sat in front of him, perhaps normally this would be fine, but everything was too much and Hyrule was too close.
“Wild, you’re bleeding.” Hyrule stated, reaching for Wild’s face. Wild quickly flinched away, hand flying towards his slate in momentary panic. Hyrule’s eyes widened, realizing what he had done and pulling back. “Sorry! Sorry just… you’re bleeding. We have extra don’t worry.” Once again Hyrule offered the potion, holding it far away from himself for Wild to grab. Wild didn’t know Hyrule all that well yet, their shield surfing adventure aside, but he knew the other boy would probably persist until Wild drank, and the last thing Wild wanted to do was to make a large spectacle. Well, more than he already had.
Wild reached out to grab the potion, ensuring he didn’t touch Hyrule’s fingers, before slowly sipping, only consuming enough to heal his head wound. Almost instantly he felt fog he hadn’t even known was there clear up, allowing him to relax, only slightly. There was still an uncomfortable heat in his cheeks and ears. He handed a skeptical Hyrule the bottle, gesturing to his healed head no longer gushing bright red. Hyrule reluctantly clipped the almost full potion back onto his belt, but didn’t leave Wild’s side.
“Are you sure you’re okay?” Wind approached Wild. It was too much, it was all too much.
‘I’m sorry’. Wild signed shakily to Wind, eyes focusing anywhere but on the younger boy who had perhaps saved his life. ‘I’m sorry’. He signed once more, this time in the direction of Time and the others. That could have gone so much worse, he could have gotten someone killed, specifically Wind.
“Wild, it’s okay we’ve all had to save each other’s asses before.” Wind piped up, but Wild only shook his head, he lifted his clammy hands, but nothing would form. What could he say? That he was sorry he put them all in danger? That he was sorry he almost blew them up without thinking?
“Teamwork is hard when you’re not used to it.” Wild’s shocked eyes darted to Hyrule in front of him, the other boy having a look of sudden understanding of what had happened, and that understanding dawned on the rest of them.
“Do us a favor and don’t almost electrocute all of us like Hyrule did.” Legend smirked at Hyrule’s red cheeks and betrayed glare.
‘I almost blew you up’. Wild signed without thinking, feeling regret pool in his stomach. He expected a scolding, a remark about how reckless and dangerous he was, how they shouldn’t let him fight. He did not expect them all to burst out laughing.
“Great, there’s another one!” Four groaned, but he didn’t sound very upset.
“Like you’re one to talk!” Warriors laughed, dodging a kick from the smith.
“Let’s not stay here for too long.” Time announced, however the clear smirk on his face told everyone how amused he was. Honestly, Wild was scared he would get a verbal lashing, but Time would probably wait for later to do that.
“Are you okay to walk?” Hyrule asked, and while Wild appreciated the concern he was confused how a small head wound would impede his movement at all. Still Wild shook his head and stood, ignoring the slight tremble in his legs from the feeling of the world imploding just a moment ago. Wild had to restrain himself from rolling his eyes at how pathetic he was being.
It seemed unnatural to be on the road again. The others chatting even while keeping a far sharper ear out for what lurked along the path.
“Hey Wild.” Wind greeted once more.
‘Thank you’. Wild signed with as much feeling as he could have while not making eye contact.
“Oh! Uh yeah, no problem. Those bastards are slippery.” Wind smiled at him, the same as before, and Wild felt himself calm slightly. “Listen…” Wild cocked his head slightly at Wind’s sudden serious tone. “I know…  I know what it’s like, to feel embarrassed when someone else has to save you. I’m the youngest so…” Wind trailed off, gesturing his hands vaguely, but Wild could understand what he was trying to say. “It, well, it took me a while to realize that getting help isn’t something you should be ashamed of. I used to feel bad whenever someone stepped in to help me, but Warriors told me that it’s okay to accept help, and I had forgotten that. That’s what being a group is. Don’t feel bad.” Wind smiled up at Wild, who looked as shocked as he felt. It’s okay to accept help. It was such a simple sentence yet it sent Wild reeling.
‘Thank you, Wind’. Wild signed, and Wind lit up once more at the sight of his name sign he was so proud of. He nodded and he and Wild spent the next hour exchanging questions and answers. They were all simple, nothing that dug deep, and Wild wasn’t as overwhelmed as he thought he would be. Yet something still weighed heavily on his mind.
~
Sky was well aware of the company he had. The others had taken to doing their chores before settling in. It was a general unspoken rule that if they had the opportunity, Links that had their tasks done could do whatever, just as long as it was near camp or someone else knew where you were and you were within someone else’s eyesight. It certainly helped them all, especially those who were used to traveling alone. The tasks weren’t really assigned, most of them just did what was closest and others filled in the rest. Sky had already ensured that Epona was properly taken care of while Twilight secured the perimeter, and was content to work on his latest woodworking. It wasn’t the only hobby he had, but it was nice for evenings he was content to sit back and observe.
Currently though, his main point of interest was awkwardly shuffling behind him. Sky wondered if he would come around in front of him to talk, but ultimately decided to be the first to speak. Sky shifted from where he was leaning against the tree to face Wild, meeting questioning but troubled blue eyes. He had been wearing his hood around camp less, and Sky wanted to think that was a positive sign. It seems being acknowledged only troubled Wild more.
“Hi Wild! Is there anything wrong or would you just like company?” Sky offered, always so considerate for his feelings. This only made Wild more flustered as he stood there, awkwardly shuffling his feet. “Wild?” Sky pressed, no impatience, only concern and confusion. Wild squeezed his hands close to his chest before raising them.
‘Is your offer still open?’
