KiloWatts & Vanek - Perennials Remixes (Harmonious Discord)
8DPromo · KiloWatts and Vanek - Perennials Remixes (Harmonious Discord)
Spring begins to bloom as seedlings lay down their roots, a sturdy foundation for their generational journey. The masters of the journey, those perennial species that brave the cycles of the earth, continue to endure. Rewind nearly 20 years to a festival in Augsburg, Germany, called Lab30, which featured a bouquet of forward-thinking musical pioneers. In that collective were the cross-genre band KiloWatts and Vanek, who had played their first show in 2004 as part of a gathering of like-minded music producers and artists worldwide, focusing heavily on experimental electronic music and art. Fast forward to the present, KiloWatts and Vanek have reunited in a boundlessly special album called Perennials. The album is a truly impressive blend of their classic signature sound and multiple nods to musical innovations that have sparked in between their albums. In celebration of Perennials, the duo decided to reach out to some of those artists for a reunion, as well as collaborate with new friends made along the way. The collection spans a network of producers from near and far, old and new, with eyes looking to the future. The remix collection offers a bountiful selection for all musical minds, from the intelligently precise ethereal offerings by Orphax, The Village Orchestra, Megaheadphoneboy, and Lackluster to the upbeat midtempo music from Erothyme, Gift Culture, Polygon Rainbow, and PointBender. Heavier techno placements from PointBender and Andrew Sega ultimately crescendo into the edit-heavy, dub offering from PHAENOS. Rediscover the Perennials listening experience with this dynamic selection of remixed offerings and rediscover the collective experience.
*Klaus Benedek (Fortunea Records) – “The Gift Culture Remix of One Day is a Beauty!” LUROB (Still Bumpin) – “Nice variety on this release. PointBenders Warehouse Dub of Nankurunasia is my go to.” P.M.F.M. (Deep Dive Corp.) – “Excellent release!” Danny Ward (Moodymanc) – “All nice … Fermenwah (TVO Tool) in particular got me here.” Sandro Bianchi (Ibiza Sonica) – “This is amazing!” Redstickman** (The Ambient Mafia) – “Great album! Please Hold (Polygon Rainbow Remix) is amazing. Super lush and chill. Love it!”

ROUND 2 / 10
please remember it's not personal if your favourite song that could've fit in with this group isn't here! this is only one poll with only ten options - there will be a bunch of amazing songs that don't appear in each round but this doesn't mean i think the ones that missed out are less deserving of love & recognition. this competition is ultimately completely meaningless, it's just for fun. so please don't swear at me about "[popular song] erasure". thanks! and enjoy! 🥳
~~~~~~~
the winner of each round will return in semi-final 1
top 5 in semi-final 1 will battle it out in semi-final 2
top 2 in semi-final 2 will go to the grand final
grand final will crown the winner ✨Tumblr's No. 1 Favourite Sing-Along Song of All Time No Backsies✨
Dylan LeBlanc & Jarrod Dickenson Live Show Review: 2/1, Sleeping Village, Chicago
Tumblr media
Dylan LeBlanc & Jim LeBlanc
BY JORDAN MAINZER
Last night at Sleeping Village, when Dylan LeBlanc and his excellently titled band The Steel Vaqueros (guitarist Clay Houle, bassist Jim LeBlanc--also Dylan's father--and drummer Dave Givan) walked out to Orchestra di Bruno Nicolai & Orchestra di Ennio Morricone's "L'estasi dell'oro (Dal film 'Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo'''')", I didn't think anything they were going to play could match the grand cinematic scope of Spaghetti Western music. I was dead wrong. Whether performing songs from his stellar 2023 concept album Coyote (ATO) or back catalog slow burners like "If the Creek Don't Rise", LeBlanc and company created worlds of space and slowly filled them up with sound.
Dylan LeBlanc & Jim LeBlanc
LeBlanc started off the night with "Beyond the Veil", the perfect song to introduce his palette and skills: leading a Crazy Horse-style band, singing with what can only be described as a gravel-throated falsetto, simultaneously worn and gentle. That vocal echo gorgeously contrasted the instrumentation throughout the night, like the tactile guitars on "Dust" and the mighty kick drum on "Dark Waters", the combination structured, yet loose. You could say the same thing about the songs themselves. Though each composition was presented faithfully, The Steel Vaqueros took their opportunities to jam. They introduced "No Promises Broken" with acoustic guitar and bass noodling, "Coyote" with a sprinkling instrumental. And "Wicked Kind" pummeled with the most explosive stomp this side of "The Chain". Turns out, if listening to Dylan LeBlanc albums allow you the opportunity to consciously explore the commonalities between his created universes and our lived one, watching him live allows you to simply get lost in both.
Claire Dickenson & Jarrod Dickenson
Opening for LeBlanc was Nashville-via-Texas singer-songwriter Jarrod Dickenson, who also released a very good album in 2023, BIG TALK (Hooked). With a couple guitars in tow and accompanied by his wife Claire on backing vocals and hand percussion, Dickenson played from throughout his discography and showcased his versatility on the axe, fast-picking on "Faint of Heart", blues-ily chirping on "Home Again". With sparser arrangements, he was able to emphasize his lyrics, taking the time to contextualize some of his songs before playing them, such as ode to touring "Born to Wander" and the empathetic "Long Hard Look". Selfishly, my favorite part of his set happened because yours truly posted on Instagram how much he'd like to hear Dickenson's cover of Guy Clark's "Dublin Blues" (originally released on his 2020 covers EP Under a Texas Sky). Though he usually plays it on his 6-string acoustic guitar, he had been leaving that guitar at the hotel while on tour, as he only has a 40-minute opening set. Well, he borrowed a capo from The Steel Vaqueros and valiantly nailed it on the 12-string. Even if it was a flop, though, the gesture exemplified the friendly spirit of the night, steeped in folk tradition but unafraid of experimentation.
I don’t know if anyone else gets told this but an old Co worker of mine from a previous job once told me that whenever I spoke, it sounded as though I was starting from in the middle of a sentence…I knew my social skills were shit but damn. 🦦
‘You got a couple of freckles on your neck, did you know that?’ You said to Leon one night, doing your routine cleaning of your guns and recourse checking your packs.
Leon made a face, ‘you’ve been staring at my neck now have ya?’ He asked teasingly, putting his handgun back together again before moving onto his shotgun, a smile crossing his lips in an almost boyish fashion when the thought of you staring at him whilst he was unaware crossed his mind.
You shrugged, as not even an ounce of shame permitted you as you spoke, ‘been doing so for a while but thanks for noticing.’
‘Where are they then freckle expert?’ Your partner asked, not thinking you weren’t going to get as close as you did as you unabashedly skimmed your fingertips over the pulse point on the left side of his neck, causing it to jump as your warm breath barely skimmed the skin there as you spoke lowly in his ear. ‘You’ve got a couple here.’
You then dragged your fingers across his Addams apple, feeling to bob, as you then trailed them just slightly beneath the pulse point on the right side of his neck. ‘And you got a lonely little one over here just peaking out from beneath your Adam’s apple.’ You said softly, looking back into your partners blue eyes that were staring back at you intensely and you smirked.
‘What’s wrong partner? Never been touched like this before?’ You asked in a teasing manner, utilising your fingers into caressing his skin as you felt his pulse escalate beneath your finger pads as though you were a conductor, and he were the orchestra.
‘Maybe I have, maybe I haven’t. Doesn’t change much on the reality that your this close to me, touching all up on my neck, as though you’re unaware of what you’re doing to me.’ Leon said as his hand grasped at the one at his neck, keeping it there as he pressed his forehead against yours, looking deep into your eyes, then down at your lips, then back up at your eyes again; his breath hot and heavy as it fanned across your face.
‘And what am I doing to you Leon?’ You asked innocently.
Before Leon could answer, Luis and Ashley broke into the room, spouting about some villagers they spotted encroaching nearby. You and Leon moved quick in packing everything up but before you left the hut you ransacked, Leon grabbed ahold of your forearm and brought his mouth near your ear as he whispered;
‘This conversation ain’t over.’
king!ghost x reader -- the wedding
You hated your wedding dress.
As you stood there in front of the mirror, your heart sank at the sight of yourself drowning in ornate and thick fabric, embroidery, and jewelry.
The veil was long and thin yet adorned with embroidery, slightly obscuring your vision. The corset was too constricting against your figure. The train of the dress seemed to stretch for miles, making movement a cumbersome ordeal. A dainty tiara sits atop your head. It would soon be replaced by a bigger tiara, one more fit for a queen. Ghost’s queen.
You sit still as the maids apply make-up to your face and style your hair, leaving yourself to your thoughts. At this moment, there was no possible alternative for you but to face him at the altar. You had to utter falsehoods about your affection for him, til death do you part. You had to slip wedding rings onto each other’s fingers, symbols of connection and eternal love. Of course, the public had no idea of your true feelings towards their king. You had to hide behind this facade, this act, that you truly liked this man. You internally roll your eyes as the maids straighten out your dress and veil, adding final touches to your wedding outfit.
A quick knock rapped against the door and the head maid, who introduced herself, came in to help you slip on your shoes.
“It’s time to go out there. Do you have your vows ready?”
Unfortunately is what you really wanted to say, but you bite your tongue.
“Yes.”
“Good. Guests are arriving. Your family is here, your highness.”
You perk up a little at that statement, but you pretend not to care. You still hadn’t forgiven your parents, but you would be overjoyed to see your siblings.
“Diplomats and royalty from other kingdoms will be present,” the head maid continues. “They’re here to bear witness to his majesty’s wedding. They want to show their support of your union. It’s a great thing, your kingdom and Kastron creating peaceful relations. It provides more…stability and protection.”
You nod your head knowingly. You weren’t completely clueless. You knew Kastron has a history of starting battles and wars. You knew they always won. And you knew other territories, kingdoms, and rogue militias who tried to pick fights with Kastron always ended up defeated. Kastron also tended to fight unnecessary wars, burning down villages with no remorse. You supposed you had to keep track of all this, now that you were about to become the queen of Kastron. More recently, you had been thinking about asking Ghost for political lessons…
Which, speaking of, your thoughts begin to drift towards him. Where is he? What is he doing right now? What is he thinking? What is he wearing? Is he dreading this as much as I am?
You would find out soon enough.
Each passing minute brought you closer to the life with him that you didn’t want.
You were snapped out of your thoughts when you heard a gentle voice beckoning you. “It’s time to go, your highness.”
You nod, taking one last look at yourself in the mirror. You don’t recognize yourself. Yes, you look beautiful, but it’s not…you, per se. The wedding dress is just a facade, a wall of innocence to hide the fact that you’re marrying a murderer.
You turn, the motion causing the heavy fabric of your dress to brush against the floor. The head maid reaches behind your head, moving the veil in front of your face. She takes your hand, helping you move down the imposing wooden doors in front of you. Everyone from Kastron was in there, royalty from far away lands were in there, your family was in there, he was in there. All waiting for the blushing bride to be married to a killer.
The head maid quickly shoves your bouquet in your hands, and you grip onto the flowers like it’s a lifeline.
This was your reality.
On cue, the doors swing open, heads turn, and the orchestra plays the wedding march. It sounds like a death march to you. (speak now by taylor swift, anyone?)
You fix your gaze on the man you detested, waiting for you at the top of the altar. He was still wearing a stupid mask, his face covered. His body was adorned in the same black regalia he had worn when asking your parents for your hand in marriage. His cape flowed down his back, pooling at the stairs. An anxiety you’ve never experienced before swallowed you whole as you dragged your feet down the aisle, hundreds of eyes picking you apart.
Ghost was looking straight at you, his form unmoving as you approached him.
You had to force yourself to keep going, this time a little faster. You wanted to get this over with. The grip you held on your bouquet made the flowers quiver. God, the feeling of hundreds of scrutinizing eyes on your back made you want to throw up.
You were almost there. Almost there. You look down at the steps in front of you, climbing up to the altar, making sure not to trip on your trailing dress.
You wondered what he thought of you at this very moment. You wondered if he understood how truly scared you were to marry him, a killer, a creator of wars and bloodshed. You hoped you made him feel guilty.
You come to a stop on the top of the stairs, turning to face him. The music stops.
The wedding officiant starts speaking, talking about love, and this and that. It bores you half to death. Every last word he says is a drag.
“Now, for the vows.”
Oh God, the fun part.
You look down at his feet, trying to tune Ghost out as he talks about “steadfast loyalty,” “honor,” “privilege,” and “responsibility.” You want to scream at him to stop.
When he’s done, he looks at you expectantly. You just know that there’s a smirk under that stupid mask of his. You clear your throat, and begin to speak lies.
Meaningless, empty vows of how you would be “patient,” “honest,” “poised,” and “loyal.” The image of a perfect wife. The moment you concluded your words, your vows ceased to exist.
The officiate turned to grab the pillow holding your wedding rings, presenting them to you. He motions for you to grab Ghost’s wedding band. Your fingers tremble as you pick it up.
“I give you this ring as a symbol of my love and faithfulness, and as I place it on your hand, I commit my very heart and soul to you,” you practically spit out, sliding the ring on his calloused hand.
You watch as Ghost grabs your ring, a rather large diamond sitting on the band. He grasps your hand gently in his own, and he repeats the same: “I give you this ring as a symbol of my love and faithfulness, and as I place it on your hand, I commit my very heart and soul to you,” slipping the ring onto your finger. He squeezes your hand gently before pulling away.
You had nearly forgotten about this part. The kiss. The final nail on the coffin.
He reaches towards your face, pulling your veil up and over your head gently. He stepped close to you, closer than ever before. You reach up to his own mask, pushing up the top to reveal his lips. He lets you, watching you intently. You wanted to rip the mask off his face, but something deep within you stopped yourself.
His hand comes around to the small of your back, pulling you right up against him. He angles his back to the crowd, allowing only you to see, suddenly pulling his mask higher and higher, until it completely slipped off his face.
God, he’s gorgeous.
He bends down to your height, breath tickling your skin. You try to memorize his face before he eventually covers it back up. He pulls you impossibly closer, his other hand coming up to press against your cheek as he kisses you deeply.
The breath is knocked from your lungs as his lips press against yours, hard.
He slowly pulls away after another beat, and surprisingly you find yourself not wanting it to end. He methodically pulls his mask back down, concealing his face once more. He turns back to face the crowd, hand not leaving the small of your back, now cheering loudly for the happy couple. His hand gently pushes you towards the crowd, beckoning you to move. You turn, putting on a shaky smile as you spot your family in the crowd.
Ghost pulls his hand from your back, extending the crook of his arm out for you to take. You clutch onto his arm like it’s a lifeline, wrapping your hand around his bicep.
The orchestra is deafening as you both make your way down the aisle as a couple. The double doors open and shut quickly behind you two, and you let out a shuddered gasp, pulling your hand away from his arm.
This is your life.
They play music as you come up on them, and some have a button you can press as well to hear more. Click here for more info; these are all my own photos (I managed not to get many people in the photos because I got here earlier that most other fans attending ESC, but trust me, there are very popular!)
Kate NV & Fire-Toolz Live Show Review: 4/6, Sleeping Village, Chicago
Tumblr media
BY JORDAN MAINZER
On her latest album WOW (RVNG Intl.), Russian pop singer Kate NV--the same person who once called her bicycle her best friend--eschews surefire humanism in favor of dropping us into a world of digitized inanimate objects. The sounds she presents, sometimes from Found Sound Nation’s Broken Orchestra sample pack, others field recordings, are inviting because they’re familiar, yet not 100% recognizable. Orchestral instruments rub elbows with video game music and clanging silverware on “confessions at the dinner table”, while goofy sitcom motif slap basslines pop up in “oni (they)” and “d d don’t”. The record’s title appropriately reflects the sense of wonder you get from listening to the record, and clearly the mindset Kate Shilonosova occupied when constructing it.
Tumblr media
During her Chicago live debut Thursday night at Sleeping Village, Shilonosova actually played mostly songs from 2020′s Room for the Moon, her planned tours for that album cancelled due to the pandemic. She brought the same joyousness that pervades WOW into the minimalist dance of its predecessor. Her robotic, yet aerobic dance moves from the opening notes of “Not Not Not”, through the funky bass and rubbery synths of “Sayonara”, and for the rest of the set fit alongside the roomy beats of the music, even as swirling saxophone, orchestral synth, and blissful arpeggios filled the spaces in between. As jubilant as the music itself, Shilonosova was grateful to be in the room, and for the night, it felt like we were here best friends.
Tumblr media
It’s perhaps strange to find Kate NV’s music minimal, but it certainly was compared to the brilliant maximalism of her opener, Chicago mastermind Fire-Toolz. Angel Marcloid’s trademark mix of disparate influences and sounds, everything from smooth jazz saxophone to arena rock guitars and death metal blastbeats and vocals, is far from throwing things at the wall and seeing what sticks. Even though Marcloid, at the end of the set, displayed the announcement that the new Fire-Toolz album, I am upset because I see something that is not there. (Hausu Mountain), would be out the next day “on the Internet where I live,” Fire-Toolz’ music is far more carefully curated than a lot of internet-brained hyperpop. Sure, F-T songs are sometimes like New Age-meets-screamo vignettes, presented in front of visuals that range from deer antlers to uncanny alien people to bootleg-looking Pixar creatures. On paper, it sounds unfiltered, but that it seems straight from the mind of Marcloid to the audience is what makes the music honest and interesting. Marcloid’s choice on I am upset to sing clean vocals makes tracks like “Mantra-ing & Golgotha: Double-Bind (Prequel)” affecting, and the same emotive performance style elevated old tracks like “Soda Lake With Game Genie”, a stadium-sized piano ballad. Kate NV and Fire-Toolz may not be headlining stadiums, but their ideas could fill a million universes.
