Speaking of boycotting Eurovision, after my latest reblog (linked), I need to express my thoughts, since this morning I've read the worst takes ever.

Some people saying "I just won't watch the Israeli entry" or "Actually boycotting doesn't work, just let us have this fun thing when the world is so awful right now" or "Boycotting from your sofa is just performative activism".

My gosh. Get educated.

The Palestinian Call for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) against Israel asked for a boycott of the whole contest. A quote from the linked article says:

Participating in Eurovision for Israel is “a dream, in particular this year, when it has even more meaning.” Since October 2023, Israel has murdered more than 30,000 Palestinians in Gaza, including at least 12,300 children, and injured a further 70,000. Understanding the contest’s propaganda value, particularly in the time of genocide, the Israeli president Isaac Herzog says, “it’s important for Israel to appear in Eurovision.”

So, "just watching anything but the Israeli entry" does not count as boycotting.

"The world is awful right now" because awful people try to make propaganda out of "this fun thing", participating in a grandiose festival while people are still being killed and attacked every day.

This is exactly the right moment to think about Palestinian people! (Or the Armenian people who were killed and displaced by Azerbaijan during the recent Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.)

I am tired too, but I live in a privileged nation, where nobody is trying to actively harm me. I have a choice to watch the fun and the glitter and listen to silly songs or I can try to think of someone else who is getting attacked on the daily.

Mind you, you can still find a way to boycott the contest and listen to the songs, if you can't LIVE without them. Just don't add views or interactions to official channels who make money out of it, and don't use the hashtags. Talk to your buddies in DM and don't make it trend! How is that complicated??

If a landlord is in financial stress due to an investment they chose to make they can sell one of their multiple properties (that's if the tax deduction from negative gearing isn't enough, because our tax system spends more helping landlords than it does on any other aspect of housing support).

If a renter is in financial stress they can get kicked out without justification and can end up homeless because they can't afford anywhere due to unlimited rent increases.

These two risks are not the same and only the Greens actually understand and are pushing for us as a country to reassess how we view housing. It's a human right - not something the rich should be able to hoard and make endless profit off.

#A LITTLE LOUDER FOR ALL THE LEECHES IN THE BACK 📢📢📢 #my rent is more than half my monthly wage #i have no choice but to work part-time due to physical & mental health #if i left my super well paying job ive been in for a decade for one i genuinely enjoy & worked full time #id no longer be able to afford the rent so i cant leave #my mum & i share bc neither of us can afford rent separately even with her contribution to the rent we just barely scrape by #this house is OLD & not renovated or anything at all & not even in a fancy upscale area and yet two people can only JUST afford it #the landlord wanted to increase the rent at the start of this current lease to about $500 more a month & thankfully accepted around $100 #we've moved like 3-4 times in almost as many years bc of bullshit rent increases and/or property issues landlords dont care to sort out #bc they're not the ones dealing with it day in day out so ''eh not important'' 🤷 #they will absolutely try to increase the rent again at the end of this lease & i have no idea if they'll be as ''generous'' as last time #& there's like literally nowhere to go that's simultaneously affordable AND in actual decent condition #AND has good public transport options (i dont drive) AND is suitable for my kitties #we always have to sacrifice one of these & since public transport & pet friendly are musts or i cant get to work/i'd need to surrender cats #then it's usually one of the others that has to go #a place with all 4 does not exist #i will never own a house unless i win the lottery #which i can rarely even buy tickets for bc we need to fucking eat!!! #important #auspol
