I just cannot understand why people think the Jedi being a part of the Republic and answering to the senate is so bad
"OH no! The space wizards are held accountable by a democratically elected legal authority! How terrible!"
And more importantly, it worked, for 25,000 years it worked
Why does a few decades at the very end mean the whole several thousand year system needs to be written off?
"But the senate was corrupt!"
But the Jedi weren't, they continued to do their job, it's not on them if the senate stopped pulling its weight, not to mention there were still senators who were trying to do their jobs till the very end
Not to mention how the sorry state of the Republic near its end was a product of the sith's efforts to destroy it

“How long will we continue to ignore the disenfranchisement of the worlds in the Outer Rim? If we continue to neglect the needs of their people, they will decide that being a Republic member world is of no benefit to them.”
Senator Lethaa Daal, of Shili
Just finished this piece of my prequels-era Togruta OC, and i'm so, so happy with how she turned out! I've made so much progress in my art, and I'm excited to see how I continue to improve!

"Of course anti-Jedi people are also anti-Senate and anti-Republic!"
Then where's all the fucking anti-Senate and anti-Republic posts, huh? Maybe make more of those and less of your anti-Jedi rhetoric instead and I'll start to believe that statement.
Also I'll point out that most pro Jedi people (REAL pro Jedi, not fake pro Jedi) are actually also pro Republic and even, for the most part, pro Senate. Because the Republic and the Senate were a system that WORKED, for 1000 years. Palpatine manipulates a successful system into being dysfunctional, but that doesn't actually means the system itself was bad to start with. There are lots of people IN that system who are also corrupt, sure, but the system itself was very successful for a very long time. None of us are anti-Republic, we're anti Sith taking over the Republic for their own agenda and twisting it into something it isn't.
The people in narrative who were anti-Senate and anti-Republic were generally portrayed as EVIL or misguided. Look at all the Separatists who, while they had legitimate grievances, are mostly portrayed as absolutely gullible and idiotic and incompetent. Look at Dooku who is prepared to commit atrocities in the name of burning down the Republic for a "better" system (which seems to still totally rely on the Corporate Alliances and slavery, so, you know, better is subjective here). The people we see more actively FIGHTING for the Republic are pretty much always considered the good guys. Padme. Bail. Mon Mothma. The Jedi. Rex during TBB. The Rebellion, Leia, Luke. They're all fighting to bring back a system that WORKED, they're fighting to protect it or rebuild it from the ashes. You're not supposed to believe Maul when he claims that the Republic is already an Empire beyond saving. If that were true, then the Rebellion's efforts later are pretty much all in vain and pointless in the extreme.

So I've noticed something in posts discussing the relationship between the Jedi and senate
Every once in a while you'll get comments/reblogs that say something along the lines of "ok but a corporation shouldn't have a senate seat"
Like
That's not something the Jedi have any say over because 1. They reject power, and 2. HOLY FUCK it is a bad idea to have those charged with upholding the law be the ones deciding who gets to have political representation, it flys in the face of the idea of checks and balances/separation of powers
And also, you're getting it but you're not getting it, the whole point of the "corporations have senators" thing is that Lucas was saying this was a bad thing, it's showing the corruption of the Republic
It's also satire of contemporary (late 90s, not that its gotten better mind you) us politics and corporate lobbyists, the trade federation senator's name (Lott Dod) is literally a portmanteau of two us politicians/corporate lobbyist names
Satire works by exaggerating the real world to logical extremes
Lucas took the state of us politics with representatives/senators being bought by powerful corporations and ran it to the logical extreme of "corporations are so powerful they can have senate seats"
It also can be a case of dialogue flowing better
Having a character say "that guy is the senator for a corporation" flows easily in the scene and gets the point across more succinctly than saying "that guy is the senator from planet x but he is also bought out by corporation and effectively is their representative"
Plus if you go off supplemental material the corporate senators are a lot more like real world corporate lobbyists
In the films and shows it's kept simple, the corporate senators are literally just senators who represent their corporations not their worlds
But eu stuff will say "officially these senators represent these worlds, but the world's in question are controlled/owned by the corporations, making the senators basically representatives of the corporations"

Wait y’all know how members of congress brought pizza to the troops at the capital after Jan 6??
Senators bringing treats to the Corries
Other senators (the asshole ones) scoff at the gesture but Thorn pledged his undying devotion to Senator Amidala when she showed up in the barracks with cake after they were kept awake all night by a phony bomb threat

Thinking about the guard experiencing a warm shower for the first time.
On Kamino they had sonics. On Coruscant they don’t even have that, just low pressure cold water showers that are at best cool and at worst freezing. They’re used to showering quickly and finding ways to warm up afterwards. Used to shivering. Used to it icing up on them in the artificial winter.
They know the senators get hot showers, hot baths, water where the steam curls up and fogs up the mirrors and windows. They’ve stood guard as their visors have fogged and the warmth has seeped in and become too much, but that’s a luxury for natborns. Not even their commanders get heated water.
But then, maybe on a mission with the GAR, maybe because the war is over, they get a warm shower. Not even hot just warm. The water is beautiful and a good pressure rather than the leaky cold drip they’re used to. It’s new and makes their skin red and it feels like heaven. They never want to get out.

What’s really weird is that there’s a Star Wars novel called Bloodlines that’s all about post-Endor Leia. And it’s supposed to be the big galactic politics novel that explains why things go bad in the New Republic. And it’s just really tin eared?
Like the analogies to realpolitik is odd? The two political factions are the Centrists and the Progressives? And that doesn’t mean what you think it means.
No, the superior politics book is Queen’s Shadow which is about Padmé’s first year in the Senate. And no one takes her seriously because she used to be the naïve young queen who got the Chancellor fired.
And Padmé really wants to pass anti-slavery legislation. So she tries to join the one anti-slavery subcommittee. But they can’t call it that since slavery is technically illegal so it’s a bad look to admit it by having an anti-slavery subcommittee. So they call it the anti-piracy subcommittee.
So Padmé asks Sheev is she can get on the anti-piracy team and he says it’s unwise at this time since it would look like cronyism and she needs more experience. So she gets on the transportation of construction materials subcommittee because those things get pirated a lot and it’s the one chance at anti-piracy legislation. So she learns all about concrete and writes a bunch of proposals on concrete and argues In front of the senate about concrete only to have he proposals get shunted back to committee but oh well it’s experience and she tries AND NOTHING GETS DONE ABOUT SLAVERY.
It’s just really brilliant. Plus the stuff on political journalism is great too.
