Bruises are difficult to heal. Even more if they weren't physical wounds. That was something you learned during the three years since waking up in this new body.
You have been trying to reason why you were reincarnated. Weren't you unworthy of divine intervention? That was one of the reasons that led to your execution after all.
Looking through the calendars around the temple you were living in, the dates all happened to be indicating five years after when you were accused.
What happened in those two years your soul was bodiless? This question has also been plaguing your thoughts since when you first opened your eyes.
“Nothing…” You whispered to yourself while closing an old book. The temple was quiet during the afternoon. Most people come to pray in the morning, so it was easy to sneak in and out of the library.
Most of the books in this place were dedicated to the Hydro Archon, which was already discouraging. Even so, you pushed yourself to try to find any kind of answer through those thick pages.
“What did that person mean with those words?”
The face of that stranger gave you a familiar feeling. Yet you couldn't remember anything except for a blur, as if they intended to not reveal themselves to you.
“Too many questions and no answers.” You sighed and put the book on the shelf again. For the rest you were still illiterate, since you decided to just start acting like a child your age would. Not wanting to attract any attention to yourself.
Maybe if you didn't, the chance of being able to leave the temple at the age of 18 and live a peaceful life away from Fontaine would increase significantly. Somewhere no one would be able to find you.
Mondstadt or Liyue. Those are the best places for someone who wants a quiet lifetime.
After removing some dust from your clothes, you decided to leave the library. It would bring worse consequences to you if anyone found you there. Maybe you would get grounded by Sister Dora or receive a scolding from the elder librarian you were hiding from.
You were hoping for sister Dora to not notice your little escape. She had always been worried about you running around the buildings, like any sane person would when a three-year-old wants to run away like this.
'I wonder why she treats me so well. It's kind of suspicious. We're not even blood related, and there are some orphanages nearby.' You got on your tiptoes to reach the door's handle. Being able to walk around was relieving, but at the same time tiring with those small legs.
Making your way out of the room, your footsteps were the only thing audible through the marble corridor. Yet, a feeling of uneasiness made you walk a bit faster.
'I feel like there's someone following me…' Your legs were accelerating with each passing second.
“Where do you think you're going?”
You froze up, stopping on your tracks and turning around. The now ten-year-old Clorinde had her arms crossed over her chest. She was in a casual outfit, something you rarely saw her use.
'Crap–'
Taking a deep breath, now was time to use the tactics you had been training for so long.
“I wanted to play!” You put on a cheerful face and started running to her. Your little arms embraced her legs as you trapped her in a hug.
“You have been missing for five hours. Sister Dora has been worried sick.” Clorinde sighed and patted your hair.
“Really?” You blinked twice. Looking through a window, you swore it had been only an hour.
'I lost track of time again–'
Your thinking was interrupted when Clorinde suddenly took you from the ground and started carrying you like a bag of potatoes. The sudden action made your face go pale.
“Clorinde!” You kicked your feet to try to get out of her grasp, but stopped when you felt yourself losing balance. It was obvious that she didn't have any kind of training on how to carry a child, since she was a child herself.
“You should stop sneaking out like this, okay?” She continued walking through the corridors. “If you don’t run away from Sister Dora this week, I'll give you my desserts.”
Your eyes sparkled at the thought. Eating more pudding after dinner would be so good and…
'I can't be so childish like that!'
It seemed like being reborn really messed up with your mind. You were reliving everything you already passed through again. Your mind was in conflict, since you were a child but at the same time mentally a teenager.
“I… I won't go… but you have to give me your dessert.” Your face flushed with embarrassment, you really let yourself be deceived by sweets.
“Good.”
Clorinde knew that being trapped inside for a long time was tiring after some point. And as a young child, you must be feeling rather trapped.
“I'll take you to the south garden, most people have gone home already.” She quickened her steps “But you can't tell anyone, okay?”
You lifted your hand and gave her a thumbs up.
She took you through places you had never seen in all those three years. Passing through small gardens with statues, most of them from the Hydro Archon.
One of those areas was a beautiful camp. In the center of it was a statue of the seven, a beautiful representation of the goddess of justice.
That was when you noticed the size of this place. You didn't think it was as giant as the one you had been brought up as the Child of the Prophecy, but it sure was big.
“We're here.”
She put you on the ground. In front of you, a flower camp with hundreds of different plants. The wind blew some petals in your direction.
That was a sight you never happened to see in your past life. Most flowers in your room were artificial ones, made so they wouldn't die. They were fake.
“Oh.”
“Nanny, can I go see the flowers with you?” A young past you in your memories was clinging to their nanny’s dress. “I have never seen them.”
“Miss [Past Name], you can't go out. Those are orders.”
The woman took your hands out of your dress and kneeled to be your height. It was your past nanny, the only one to defend you. Yet she died because of it.
“Not even once?”
You pleaded with puppy eyes. But you knew she was most likely going to say that the outside was dangerous for someone so important like you.
“I'm sorry, but no. You can't go outside.”
“Why? The other children go, I see from the window.” She patted your head
“Because you're the child loved by our goddess.”
How strange, you didn't remember it before. It was like this memory just popped out from nowhere in your head.
“–me]...”
“[Name]!”
You were snapped out of your thoughts by Clorinde. She had a worried face, which this time wasn't hidden behind her usual cold demeanor.
“Are you okay?” She crouched beside you and put her hand on your shoulder. 'She's doing that again…'
Clorinde put a strand of your hair behind your ear.
“I am…”
You tried to put on a smile for her. It took a while for her to fall for it, but she did.
Both of you sat on the ground, in a place which wouldn't damage the flowers.
Then you realized what you had done, you had deceived her with your smile. Even if innocently, you still did it. Maybe they weren't that wrong in executing you and you were really fooling people, maybe it was–
“Here.”
A flower crown made of lumidouce bells was placed over your head. The one who made it had a relaxed smile on her face. Her eyes were never full of life like other children's. Even so, they were warm when staring at you.
You adjusted it. The crown was slightly bigger than your head, making it slip sometimes.
'She's nice to me. But how long will things last like this?' You looked at the flower crown you were making. One of the flowers had thorns on it and you hadn't even noticed.
Maybe, one day, Clorinde would hurt you just like those thorns just did. And it was something you should start preparing yourself for.
Because kindness never comes for free.

passion scares people.
it scares people that don’t possess the same fire and know that yours can burn them to a crisp.
people say you should do what you love, be bold about it and unafraid to stand out. yet as soon as you do, resentment bespatters the air from their mouth, their dirty looks, their passive-aggressive behaviors hiding a layer of fear, of feeling threatened. oh how full of hypocrisy. you tell the flowers to bloom and snip them off as soon as they do. you long to see the butterfly soar and show off its wings then wish it were back in its cocoon. you want such people to evolve backwards while claiming you don’t, that you want the best. you are afraid of passion. it petrifies you because you don’t have it. when someone climbs to a summit you watch them from down below, wishing they fall all the while cheering for them with dispassionate clapping. you are fake, a personality of plastic, just floating in a sea of bad friend circles hoping more scraps join you to pollute it and kill everything in it. mendacity. pretense. duality. i would rather die lonely than have such bad company.

Published: Nov 19, 2021
Our times often put me in mind of Tennessee Williams’s “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” when Big Daddy says: “What is the smell in this room? Don’t you notice it, Brick? Don’t you notice a powerful and obnoxious odor of mendacity in this room?”
These days, an aroma of delusion lingers, with ideas presented to us from a supposedly brave new world that is, in reality, patently nonsensical. Yet we are expected to pretend otherwise. To point out the nakedness of the emperor is the height of impropriety, and I suspect that the sheer degree to which we are asked to engage in this dissimulation will go down as a hallmark of the era: Do you believe that a commitment to diversity should be crucial to the evaluation of a candidate for a physics professorship? Do you believe that it’s mission-critical for doctors to describe people in particular danger of contracting certain diseases not as “vulnerable (or disadvantaged)” but as “oppressed (or made vulnerable or disenfranchised)”? Do you believe that being “diverse” does not make an applicant to a selective college or university more likely to be admitted?
In some circles these days, you are supposed to say you do.
The San Diego State University physics department is seeking a physicist. The job description asks candidates to show how they “satisfy” at least three of the following criteria: “(a) are committed to engaging in service with underrepresented populations within the discipline, (b) have demonstrated knowledge of barriers for underrepresented students and faculty within the discipline, (c) have experience or have demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentoring underrepresented students, (d) have experience or have demonstrated commitment to integrating understanding of underrepresented populations and communities into research, (e) have experience in or have demonstrated commitment to extending knowledge of opportunities and challenges in achieving artistic/scholarly success to members of an underrepresented group, (f) have experience in or have demonstrated commitment to research that engages underrepresented communities, (g) have expertise or demonstrated commitment to developing expertise in cross-cultural communication and collaboration, and/or (h) have research interests that contribute to diversity and equal opportunity in higher education.”
They’re all admirable activities and aims. However, they are vastly less applicable to becoming or being a physicist than to, say, social work, education or even disciplines such as anthropology and sociology. That an applicant to the university’s physics department would be required to meet such benchmarks is a very modern proposition, and probably leaves most people now reading this job posting — physicists or not — scratching or shaking their heads. Yet this emphasis is increasingly found in fields related to the hard sciences: Earlier this year, for instance, leaders of the National Institutes of Health announced their “UNITE initiative,” a “framework to end structural racism across the biomedical research enterprise.”
The notion seems to be that practitioners and scholars, across disciplines, must devote a considerable part of their time to putatively antiracist initiatives. It’s a bold proposition, but given how shaky its actual justification is, it is reasonable to think that lately this devotion is being imposed by fiat, as opposed to being an organic outpouring. And if the price for questioning that notion is to be seen as sitting somewhere on a spectrum ranging from retrogressive to racist, it’s a price few are willing to pay. One is, rather, to pretend.
The American Medical Association and the Association of American Medical Colleges have released a “guide” that urges practitioners to employ a left-leaning glossary in pursuit of “health equity.” The problem is that what they recommend would be all but inapplicable in the real world.
While caring for their patients, doctors are encouraged to mold their statements to reflect that vulnerability isn’t merely extant, but something imposed upon some patients. That is true in a technical sense, but how realistic — or useful relative to the care itself — is it to propose that physicians should say “oppressed” rather than “vulnerable”? Or, based on the same sociopolitical perspective, what is the utility of replacing the statement, “Low-income people have the highest level of coronary artery disease in the United States” with “equity-focused language that acknowledges root causes” like “People underpaid and forced into poverty as a result of banking policies, real estate developers gentrifying neighborhoods, and corporations weakening the power of labor movements, among others, have the highest level of coronary artery disease in the United States”? Surely, even in our age, clinicians should focus on treatment, not medical newspeak.
The chances that real doctors will ever use language like this are minuscule. Commitment to healing the sick makes it plain that energy should be focused on ways of attending to the unhealthy, rather than to studiously ideological ways of talking about and to them. This means that all polite engagement with documents like this, from the very production of them to any forums in which their propositions are engaged politely, amounts to an act.
The jukebox musical based on Alanis Morissette’s “Jagged Little Pill” includes a character who’s a white mother of a Black daughter. In one scene, friends mention that the daughter will be more likely to get into a top-level university because she’s Black. The mother takes this as a slam and gives a sharp retort implying that the very assumption is racist, with the additional assumption that the audience will agree (which it vocally did the night I attended a performance).
This, though, is fake. That selective schools regularly admit Black students with adjusted standards is undeniable. Examples include “Harvard’s race-conscious admissions program” — as U.S. Circuit Judge Sandra Lynch described it last year — and the circumstances of the well-known Gratz v. Bollinger Supreme Court decision, where this aspect of the admissions process was widely aired, as among a number of other cases over the past few decades.
My point here isn’t to debate the pros and cons of affirmative action. There are legitimate arguments on both sides of that debate. My point is that the existence of various forms of affirmative action in admissions is a fact, and saying otherwise is fiction. Beyond this musical, it is often suggested that it is disingenuous, if not racist, to surmise that a Black student was admitted to a school via racial preferences. But this leaves the question as to just what we are to assume the aim of these policies has been, when the educational establishment so vociferously defends them.
That athletes and legacy students are also admitted via preference does not belie the fact that there are also, at many schools, admissions preferences based on race. That this is not to be mentioned is a kind of politesse requiring that we prevaricate about a subject already difficult enough to discuss and adjudicate.
All of this typifies a strand running through our times, a thicker one than always, where we think of it as ordinary to not give voice to our questions about things that clearly merit them, terrified by the response that objectors often receive. History teaches us that this is never a good thing.
John McWhorter (@JohnHMcWhorter) is an associate professor of linguistics at Columbia University. He hosts the podcast “Lexicon Valley” and is the author, most recently, of “Woke Racism: How a New Religion Has Betrayed Black America.”
==
We guiltlessly reject obligation to participate in the fictions and rituals of the traditionally religious. We know their grace at dinner and their magic spells during a wedding do nothing, and we don't feel obliged to affirm otherwise.
Why then, are we obligated to participate in the fictions and sacraments of The Elect? We know many of the their platitudes and canards aren't true, and yet we feel obligated to affirm otherwise.
What's actually true actually matters.

If someone ever asked you which of your experiences facing death was the worst, you would definitely choose that one.
Drowning would definitely enter your list of "Worst ways to die" in one of the highest positions. The feeling of agony as the water forcefully enters your body and the shortness of breath that felt like someone forcibly removing your lungs.
You felt like you were dead, you knew you were, the same feeling as when you first died. It was as if the commands given by your brain were not respected by the rest of your body, which remained motionless.
Underneath you, you could see a kind of starry purple hole. At its epicenter was an eternal void. Water was being drawn into it, but it was impossible to ascertain whether it was actually flowing out of it or not.
You thought that by crossing it, perhaps your end would finally be decreed. Or you would just be reborn again into a life doomed to failure.
Your arms, which were involuntarily stretched forward, would be the first to make contact with the darkness. But contrary to expectations, as soon as they touched the blackness, they passed through it, out of your field of vision.
'What?' Your face contorted in confusion. 'Wait, wait, wait-'
Before you could say anything else, your body passed straight through that obscure screen. Suddenly, everything began to take shape, and that immense sea gradually disappeared.
With every blink you gave, something different appeared in the landscape. One blink and a tree appeared. Another, and buildings formed out of nothing.
The only apparent color was a monochromatic, lifeless gray. Even if things shaped themselves, they remained static, lifeless. There was no sound or movement. Not even the birds that flew overhead moved, they were completely paralyzed in the air.
"It's like I'm inside a newspaper photo." - Crossing your arms, you gradually turned around, trying to take in your surroundings.
Your feet touched the grass below you. It didn't seem to be real, but synthetic.
"Is this some kind of post-mortem that I didn't know about...?"
Running back and forth through the city streets, trying to find some answer to where you were and what had happened to you, that same light reappeared. Its glow flew from side to side as if it wanted you to follow it.
"Right, right... you basically made me stop here and you really want me to trust you again?" - You complained. It wasn't as if you were going to believe the same thing that got you killed. "Don't think I'm going to fall for your dirty tricks again, rascal."
On the face of it, the flash wasn't even that flashy. You must probably have been lured in because you're in a childish frame of mind.
'That's so ridiculous-'
With a face slightly red with embarrassment, you continued to resist the insistence of the glare, which began to swirl around you.
"I'm not going, there's no point in insisting-"
Suddenly, a force pulled you, causing your feet to take several steps forward. It was that damn spark that had somehow managed to accomplish such a feat against you.
"I don't..." you were already turning to go wherever your feet took you, but the illustrious little thing blocked your path. After what seemed like an eternity of painful stares at the light, you gave up.
You ran a hand over your head before replying, "Well, I'm already dead anyway. It's not like it could get any worse... I hope."
Tumblr media
"Come on! I've been walking for over an hour, man!" Bothered by the situation, you stopped in the middle of the lawn.
"I'm stuck here because of you! Can't you at least give me some peace?" Your feet kicked a small stone along the path. "It's simply pointless following you at this point."
Sighing, you turned around and decided to go the other way. However, the little light had no plans to let you go so soon and pushed you back in the original direction. It was becoming quite an annoying game, where you could only do what it wanted.
Seconds, minutes, even hours had passed since you started your walk towards nothingness.
Nothing seemed real, as in a painting painstakingly painted to resemble the reality exhibited in the finest museums possible. But for some reason, the ground beneath you seemed more real as you walked. Before, it was as if you were a ghostly apparition wandering through an immense void imitating the city of Fontaine. Now everything seemed more real, but still monochrome.
You didn't even make a point of looking ahead, focusing only on your feet and how you wanted answers from that mysterious person. What is this place? Why is everything frozen in time? It seemed like every second a new question came up to confuse you even more. From your list, there were already more than 25 to ask.
'What a thing... I think I'm going to have to accept this damn place one way or another.’
Your walk took you to a terribly familiar place: the infamous Lucine Fountain, right in front of the Opera Epiclese.
"Oh..." You averted your gaze only to the fountain, and with a pale face and a heart in the throat, tried to completely ignore the building in front of you. That building brought back bad memories, very bad memories.
'Why does this kind of thing keep haunting me? I've already died... there's no reason to keep torturing me like this.’
You sat on the edge of the fountain, completely ignoring the idiotic spark that flickered around you. You just needed a moment to get your thoughts in order.
"Ah... I've died again and this world is my divine punishment...?" You let a nervous laugh escape your throat. Perhaps joking about the situation was a good way of pretending to be normal when you're stuck in what seems to be an alternative Fontaine reality.
No answer.
Of course, they would never come at you that easily. That person said you'd need to look for a "gift", but didn't give a hint. It was as if they really were playing a game of chess with you, trying to complicate your moves at any cost.
Placing a hand in the grayish still water, a reaction happened unexpectedly. Like an explosion, the colors suddenly returned to the scene. But it wasn't just the colors, everything came back.
The streets began to move again. Melusines patrolled with happy expressions on their faces. They seemed happy with what they were doing. Children played around, running from place to place as if their lives depended on it.
You called out to them with a smile, getting ready to interact with someone new in such a long time. Even more so with someone who must have been around your age. One of them seemed to have heard you and came towards you.
"Excuse me, could you tell me..." the boy walked past you as if he hadn't heard your voice.
But he was still looking at you with the other children. It was strange, as if you were there but at the same time you weren't.
Looking back at the water of the fountain, where the child was standing in front of it, you could see a reflection. But the person mirrored was not you, not in this life, not in the next. It was a completely different person, someone you had never seen before in your life.
Long gray hair that flew in the wind and blue eyes with a touch of gray adorning them. That face didn't resemble her appearance at all. It seemed to be around nine or ten years old and angelic in appearance.
The reflection stretched its hands forward, manipulating the water in the fountain to create living water from what looked like hydro. You hadn't commanded it, but the body did.
"Hey! ▀▀▀▀▀▀▀! How can you do that without one of those shiny stones that make people strong?"
A younger girl hugged you, but you didn't feel any kind of physical sensation at her touch. As if the body had ceased to be yours. In fact, it wasn't even your body to begin with.
"It's no big deal." An unfamiliar voice left your lips automatically, a youthful voice, but not so childish. You were sure you weren't answering the child.
"It's called a vision, my parents told me." The boy from before crossed his arms proudly, in a way that looked as if he had just solved the greatest reason in the world.
The other children looked at him in bewilderment, amazed at how much he knew. But the "you" of this body just laughed and stopped doing what he was doing before, letting all those elemental illusions burst like bubbles.
"That's because they're ▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀, of course."
They looked shocked at what another person had just said. But what reached your ears was something incoherent again.
When you touched the reflection of the water, the light disappeared. Everything started to become picturesque and confusing. Houses became abstract and distorted and even the natural noises from before sounded like agonizing noises.
"¿ʇǝʎ ʇı punoɟ ʇ,uǝʌɐɥ no⅄"
The voice sounded heavy, entangled with noises coming from all corners. The atmosphere was extremely confusing, as if you were at a loud party.
"˙ʎǝʞ ǝɥʇ puıℲ"
A purple blur covered his senses. It seemed to contain thousands of stars inside, the starry sky in front of you. But the admiration didn't last long.
At the same time as it was fascinating, it was deadly. There was no way to breathe. Just emptiness no matter how many times you tried to inhale the air.
"Wa..."
"Wake..."
"Wake up!"
A second voice joined the previous one. The two intertwined in unison. Just like two songs being placed on top of each other in perfectly aligned verses.
And in the snap of a finger, something like a thud went through your body. There was no more dark, mythical or monochrome scenery. Just the familiar blue sky you were used to.
However, the sun's rays were blocked by something, by someone: a blond child with blue eyes, he looked older than you and he was soaking wet. Drops of water from his hair fell gently on your skin.
"Uhm... Are you okay?" he looked embarrassed, a worried expression adorning his face.
There he was, the boy you were looking for.

Tagged by: @rose-rondo Thanks for tagging, brother of the sword.
Tagging: @blackleg5932 @xmeatlover @veshtitsaursula @pcrona @heartcaptain @rex-mendaces @infxrnocicero
I'm not tagging any more people because I am mostly sure they would not appreciate it. As for you guys, you don't have to do this little game and if I crossed the line and you'd rather not be tagged by me, please let me know so it won't happen again.
2ND RULE: BOLD the statements that are true for your muse (both canon and modern verses)
