A friend of a friend was doing a Google survey recently on what names the fandom uses for various characters. It included Orange, also known as Second, sometimes shortened to Sec, and occasionally abbreviated as TSC which is understood to stand for The Second Coming.

Participants in the survey were instructed to select, from a list of options, which name they primarily use for each of the characters featured. One of the examples given for clarification is that many people don't refer to Chosen by his full title of "The Chosen One" in regular conversation. Which makes sense. I tend to shorten his name to Chosen in casual conversation, whether speaking or typing; I don't usually abbreviate his name as TCO unless I tag him as such so a post reaches more people.

But what tripped me up was the other example, in reference to Orange: that being, using the name Orange to refer to him in the AvM series, but using the name Second to refer to him in the main AvA series.

...do...do people really do that? Is that how a bunch of you have been doing this?

If so, I'd really like to know why because just hearing about it like this perplexes me.

Does it come from the idea that AvA and AvM are separate timelines, that they don't share continuity? I'd heard that idea mentioned some time ago and, while I admit that the in-story chronology of Alan's videos as a whole is a mess (some information isn't even consistent between multiple videos of the same event, see: King losing his child to a different version of Minecraft in the s3 finale than is shown in the full season compilation), I don't really understand why that's enough to say they're separate continuities.

In my mind, there are too many things that fall apart if we consider these disconnected series featuring different iterations of the characters. If AvA Yellow isn't also AvM Yellow, then there's no explanation for Yellow being able to figure out a way to render a cursor into the outernet in The Showdown, because we never see AvA Yellow working with redstone so his capability has no explanation. If AvM are the only videos you know Purple from, then you won't get why the color gang are friendly with him at the end of The Witch episode because you aren't considering the events of AvLeague.

And I forget where I saw this comment, I think it was on YouTube somewhere, but somebody said that AvA Orange and AvM Orange are practically different characters and- I don't get it?? What did they see that I'm not seeing? Where's the divide? Can someone illuminate it for me???

As far as naming conventions, I do use both names for him and have reasons for which name gets used at which time, but it's not to distinguish between series, because I do believe AvA Orange and AvM Orange to be the same character.

I use the name Second to refer to him at times when his powers are active; specifically, the powers that awoke in full for the first time during The Showdown. This began as a way to demonstrate how his powers seemed to act on their own merit without his conscious input in that episode, since he has no memory of them or of anything he did while they were active. (A bit like ???% for those of you familiar with Mob Psycho 100.) But if such a time comes when he is able to maintain consciousness while his powers are active and use them deliberately, I will still continue to call him by the name Second during those times.

I use the name Orange to refer to him the rest of the time, when his powers either are dormant or are unconsciously active, such as when his drawings self-animate.

lucifer helped alec survive the svefnthorn - a theory

story time! i was ranting to @dustandducks about how i can't believe alec survive being stabbed by the svefnthorn (he stabbed himself but same sentiment) which was attuned to sammael at the time. sammael who, you know, is a literal prince of hell, with power only second to lucifer himself. and to add more onto this.

it is stated that only a warlock can survive being stabbed by the svefnthorn and nothing can reverse its effects. no other magical creatures in the shadoworld stand a chance against the svefnthron, except the warlock. pretty terrifying right? but this happened

alec survived being stabbed by the svefnthorn. not only did he survive, not only did there was no blood or injury or visible scar from the stabbing, but he was also able to call the thorn's power to him and used that power to help magnus. but why? how could that happen? we already established the power of the svefnthorn, and it was clear alec was not meant to survive it. i love alec, i would absolutely do something that ends me up on national news if it would make him happy, but i know his ability. he doesn't have extra angel blood or any blessing from the angels, or any secret gift that makes him exceptionally powerful, he's just your normal level shadowhunter

even alec himself was surprised when he realized he was not burnt to a crisp due to his 300 IQ decision-making skills. and i know we have the explanation about the alliance rune smoothing the thorn's demonic magic and alec's angelic magic to work together, but once again, how? we don't have a clear exposition for this, even from characters in the story

alec didn't know it would work, magnus didn't know why it worked. everybody's best guess were fate taking it easy on them. and for sammael-

he just...left, like how corporate taking down their pride flags the second pride month is over. no rage, no murder, nada, just disappeared into space. he also seemingly non fazed by the fact that alec survive a thorn with clearly anti non-warlock embedded to its manual.

@dustandducks raised a really good point, what if someone else, some higher power meant for alec to survive. the usual, and maybe logical answer would be angel looking out for their descendants, cause alec need to fulfill a greater destiny in the future. im going to play the devil’s advocate here and suggest that lucifer popped up and gave alec a little demonic magical assistance. this conspiracy somewhat tied up the loose ends in the lost book of the white and built some interesting story beat for the wicked power and the black volume of the dead

the twist fitting to what we already known from tlbotw

maybe the reason why sammael didn’t snatch alec up and put him in some demonic science lab in his realm is because he sensed lucifer’s presence and decided not to mess with anything lucifer was cooking up. (as lucifer is more powerful than him, which is also stated before the stabbing scene in tlbotw) it can also tied in sammael’s motive of gathering other princes of hell to talk about lucifer in the epilogue. tlbotw was setting up the grounds for tbvotd, magnus escaped becoming a greater demon’s minion leading to alec becoming the minion of a greater greater demon

how the twist affect the future events in the tsc universe

one might be thinking, why would lucifer saved alec, he just a normal shadowhunter, why would the literal mega ultimate OG devil care about him? as much as i would like to say it’s because everything revolve around alec and everyone love him (as they should), i know it’s not the case.

many have speculated that in the final series, there will be a showdown between demons and the shadoworld. and what if lucifer wanted to infiltrate the enemy’s side, wreck them slowly from the inside and make them suffer at the hands of their kind. his spy should held high position, a major voice among the children of the angels and has a connection to the downworlders, and someone who wouldn’t pose as potential suspect easily.

enter alec who fit all these criteria and more. who would think their consul is under the control of lucifer and is working against them? if alec under the influence of lucifer wreaked havoc from the shadow, it could create more base for the cohort to claim that they were right and the clave in exile would suffer under an incompetent lead, causing animosity and conflicts in the already tense political situation. and when the truth comes out? chaos everywhere. lucifer didn’t even have to lift a finger to see the shadowhunters crash and burn

ASKING YOU ABOUT YOUR AVA/AVM HEADCANONS!! I'D LOVE TO HEAR ABOUT THEM

I AM ABOUT TO GO CRAZY IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS MOMENT...

okay lets start with just my hollowhead hcs brace yourselves i wrote a lot

SECOND/ORANGE: Second isn't actually all that fond of being called TSC he prefers to just be refered to as Orange since that way he feels less like the odd one out of the color gang, he already has enough w his big ass head! So he def prefers that name over his actual name, think of it like a nickname ! Another one, he has no idea of what he is capable of. LIKE. in AvA 5 showdown he gets his shit rocked and then unlocks his inheret hollowhead OP powers right? here's the thing, what if, while all of that was happening, he's completely unconscious and going on auto pilot? Not only does he pass out again and then wake up confused and in disbelief at seeing his friends alive but he is also very confused as to why Chosen bowed to him! He has no clue that it was *HIM* who saved the day and defeated Dark !! RAAHH !! That why we never see him use his powers again (at least fully, or conscious lol) Cause in ep 16 note block battle he had just woken up and in his half-sleep state he went there just to shut his friends up and go back to bed, in my heart of hearts the fuckin uh energy wave he produced wasnt even a conscious action!! And speaking of his sleeping habits, i think its pretty interesting to see him sleeping so much, i either think it has relation to his powers (even if showdown came after we started to see him sleeping constantly) just for the lols. Another one is that he's just narcoleptic haha

CHOSEN/TCO: Fucked up little guy he's poprtrayed as cool and level headed and serious by the fandom but all i can think of is back to him first being given his name and deciding to instantly break stuff and cause trouble, he is a menace!! I hc that he is angry a lot of the time, he's just a silent-rage type of guy, easily irritable and impatient, probably sarcastic and to-the-point when he talks I think he also sleeps a lot, like Second, but in his case he's just depressed el o el, he is also haunted by memories of his time being used by Alan/Creator as an AdBlocker cause that sure had to leave sequels, so he is depressed and thus sleeps a lot but then has terrible nightmares about being a prisoner and thus doesnt sleep but then gets tired and has to sleep a lot and then its just a terrible terrible cycle- He has decided to move on and "forgive" Creator but he still needs to go to therapy tbh One more for him is that he is both very caring to Orange and very scared of him. HEAR ME OUT, Chosen knows what this kid is capable of, he knows that Second doesnt know, and decides to keep it that way for both of their sakes. STILL, even if he is very intimidated by what his little brother can do he still cares for him and looks after him the way he wishes he would have been looked after, even if Orange already has a loving support system in the color gang Chosen tends to go out of his way to check on him, i think that Chosen yearning for family is fucked up and in character since he was the first one to get severly punished by their Creator and even if Orange doesnt need a loving caring family (he already has one) he's gonna give it to him godddammit !! (for both of them)

DARK/TDL: MY BABYGIRL oh god ohhh god Okay so to start off, middle-child syndrome. Lots of insecurities and issues with identity and finding out who he is and what is his purpose. Simple one: i think the bracelets he made to enhance his powers are now imposible to take off and got broken so badly that his powers are now nonexistent (or at least suuuperrr weak) cause of them malfuctioning. His insecurities come from being literally the weakest of the HollowHeads, imagine being one out of three inherently superpowerful (and probably inmortal!) beings in the world and then not even coming close to defeat either of them on your own. FUCKED UP! And we know he is aware of this cause he makes all of this technology to enhance his strength and be able to stand on the same ground as Chosen. He only won his second fight w Chosen cause of his gadgets and his bots. And even with those he got easily defeated by Second. In showdown, if we become a little bit crazy, you can interpret his desperation to kill Second as Fear. The moment he thinks Second is down he goes and tries to get his plan into motion cause who fuckin knows what might happen next . And, as he feared. Orange beats him up and all that he worked for is gone in seconds! And im not saying that him making all of those bots and killing innocent sticks cause they were in his way is okay DEF NOT but i think i can see where it comes from Here come in play his issues with identity, since being given a name he was going to be Chosen antithesis, the one to defeat him and forever be enemies, but he lost, and instead of finding doom at the hands of Chosen or at the hands of the Creator, he finds companionship and a brother in Chosen, both of them break out of what they were supposed to be and run away after causing a mess. Again mentioning how Chosen is the more destructive/chaotic one, i think that Dark held onto that and decided alright! this is me now! Just like him! Destructive. He makes that his entire personality and goal since he doesnt actually have any other. He was given a mission which was to destroy Chosen, he failed, and then he got a new mission, destroy Alan's PC, and then he, didnt have anything, just chosen, so he kept on destroying stuff, thats what they both did! And then, against his given interpretation of being a destroyer. he created something, he made viruses and bots yes, but he MADE them, he made himself something to be stronger, he had a plan that he was genuelly excited to show Chosen, like, "Look! I can get us revenge on the Creator, for what he did to you! For what he did to us!" ITS JUST SO. BITTERSWEET TO ME,, that when he thinks hes doing something by his own free will he's meet with rejection and told to stop, so thats why he sticks to it, he goes thru with his plan and decides hes not going to follow orders around anymore, this is what he is this is what he wants, he wants revenge, he wants to make the person that hurt him HURT. its so.... OUGH And then of course it doesnt work as he wanted. he loses yet another battle and is left alone to put himself back together, it makes me so so so sad to think about him badly injured and having to pick himself up and just. move on. In my perfect world after Showdown Chosen goes to look for Dark and they slowly but surely start to rebuild their relationship again.

Theories about AVA's new teaser

Well as we have all seen and for those who do not leave the link here https://youtube.com/shorts/t_E6pHNfyB4?feature=share

Spoiler alert, if you haven't seen the teaser yet I recommend that you go watch it before reading this and beforehand I mention that English is not my mother language.

At the beginning, he gives us a brief summary of everything that has happened in the previous AvA, and since this was perhaps months ago, then we are given the integration of a character we know.

I have read several speculations about this and how he can be absolutely a victim but we must remember this. Victim cannot be the bad guy, since when Alan eliminated him in the first AvA and since it was the same computer that was broken/destroyed by The Dark Lord and The Chosen One, we also don't know if this same character can recover his memory, Because practically as much as Chosen and Victim are of the same design and both have different retrospectives, so the victim is a character with a blank memory or maybe he does have memory and will remember what Alan did before.

In the second scene we have chosen in the OUTERNET for those who don't know what the OUTERNET is (I think it's official? It appears in Wikipedia about AvA and AvM and others.) is a subspace in the Internet, where Internet stick figures come from and their home. This was the same location where the events of The Flashback and The Showdown happened. The Outernet and the Internet are separated by a grid-like barrier, with each cell leading to a specific device connected to the Internet through its IP address. This is where the real place outside the internet is revealed, and it takes place completely outside of Minecraft. We can see how Chosen looks lost and running from something or rather from someone since bullet casings or shots can be seen towards him.

Trying to run away from who is chasing him or rather who. Since it seems an association for the CherryBlossoms short that is given.

Also in the next part we can realize how TSC (The second coming) grabs a pencil and draws a line between them as if they were dividing them or had different opinions on a certain topic, maybe second didn't like something and I drew that line giving it a 'warning' I feel like it is.

In addition, as Chosen, he draws fire from his mouth as if he wanted to scare away something that is not there (here it is in the sense that the victim theory is more valid due to the spectral powers that people place on the victim) or incinerating projectiles that go towards he.

we can see how second appears, looking for chosen but in the first fragment he looks lying on the ground and then goes to another stage and is in the sights of one of the hunters who shoots. Could second also be another objective of that corporation? Let's also take into account that all the adventures of the color gang all the OUTERNET has seen it (it occurs in a flashback of AvM episode 30) that they are known and it may also be that to get to that place the video of The shoutdown was presented, where the brief fight between The Dark Lord and The Chosen is shown One where they travel through the internet and among them is YouTube with the already published video of them fighting.

Finally, we are even given The chosen one glitched, we are given to understand that he goes to Alan for help, as a theory that is mentioned that the chosen one goes to where Alan to fix his code due to the thorns of the virabot that did not affect him before and that now affects him which would be something strange, it should also affect second but somehow he has an antivirus for his powers that heal him even so maybe this is because of the hunters.

Maybe these hunters have certain bullets that can affect the Hollow stickman because let's remember that they are different from the OUTERNET ones since in the past, they were basically tyrants of the entire internet, they could have some prevention for any type of super powerful Hollow who wants to attack OUTERNET or stickcity again.

There are theories that The Dark Lord is not dead, it may be a yes and no, in the final chapter of AvA practically The second coming destroys TDL, dragging him with his green laser beam towards a mountain that explodes. We have no evidence that one Hollow can kill another and only the creator of said Hollow can eliminate it. If the chance is that he is not dead, THE DARK LORD would not forgive THE CHOSEN ONE, why?

Basically he betrayed him, TDL is evil and was created to destroy TCO are impregnated in his code to destroy TCO or everything good, in theory TDL is a villain and TCO can be an antihero because he was willing to kill TDL so that not continue with his plans, they are both good and bad by their code, so if he were alive, it would practically be for revenge against TCO for betraying him and joining (what he believes) their common enemy, Alan Becker.

Another theory that I want to give is that, it would be obvious that Purple and King (mango) would appear since both are mainly in stickcity, that is, OUTERNET, it could be that both are important in the margin that they know the city, being of help to chosen or the color gang .

Although the crazy theories they have in the Bingo Card make me laugh, some of them may be true without us realizing it.

There are many more deeper theories and variety but I wanted to give a bit of my theory on all of this.

Awakened AU

General Info:

When a stick activates something deep inside of them, they cause an Awakening! After Awakening, a stick gains a unique tail, horns, and a couple other features as well like fur, animalistic legs, or wings!

Anybody can Awaken, but it takes a lot to do so depending on the person. For example, in this AU, TSC Awakened when he unlocked his powers in The Showdown, while Green awakened when he simply learned to sing in Noteblock Universe!

In my AU, the characters that have awakened are the whole color gang, Purple, TSC, TCO, TDL, and King!

Ive made 4 of the designs so far, and feel free to ask the 4 who I've finished some questions!

Story Arc of LoS and TDA...

After my post on analyzing books, I got this question from @anna-g-x: Hi, you talk a lot in posts about story arcs and climaxes and I was wondering if you could do a post explaining the events e.g. Inciting incident followed by ..etc that should happen in a good book, thank you

The story arcs that I refer to are part the fundamental elements of plot in a 3 Act Structure. There are lots of discussions about the merits of plot driven vs. character driven stories. In my opinion they go hand in hand, and a good story needs both. You can have the best character, but if nothing happens there’s no story, and if there isn’t a character you’re vested in then why care about the best plot. In YA it’s especially important that a character has an opportunity to grow and change, be challenged, face and overcome obstacles—this is twofold between external things happening to the character and internal things, personal struggles. LoS has a lot of different characters to follow, and everyone who has a POV is going to have a slightly different story arc, though there are times they converge. So, I’ll go through LoS using Julian as the example. Because Julian’s need to keep Emma and his family safe—the most important thing to his character, the story arc is going to reflect that.

These are my opinions of where things break down, and you can follow along with the chart:

Act 1: LoS begins by defining their routine—fighting demons at the pier. When they return Clary and Jace are there and we get the warning that things aren’t going to be staying the same. There’s no medicine for Arthur as the Centurions arrive to further upset the balance. Throughout all these external things happening, Julian still has internal struggles. He tries to juggle his frustrations with Arthur, the pressure of the Centurions bearing down, and most importantly his jealousy of Emma being with Mark.

Gwyn arrives to tell the Blackthorns of how Kieran is to be executed. It’s Mark’s ii (Inciting Incident) because he decides he can’t abandon Kieran and leaves for Faerie. Mark leaving for Faerie is Julian’s ii because he now has to leave the Institute and his family to the Centurions while he ventures to Faerie with Emma and Cristina to make sure his brother doesn’t end up getting killed. Kit’s ii is different since he has a different story arc. I think his is when Malcolm and his sea demons attack the Institute. Up till then he’s been full of disdain for Shadowhunters, but he discovers something about himself in the fighting, and then there is their escape to London after.

They leave for Faerie, and I like the Phouka as a literary device to remind us what is important for each character. For Julian, it is a solution to the parabatai bonds and this is essential to his character, because without breaking his bond, he can’t have Emma. He is told he will meet someone who will be able to break the bonds. When they get to Faerie, none of their weapons work. It’s Julian’s time to have second thoughts, yet they continue to the Climax of Act 1—the showdown with the Unseelie King and rescuing Kieran.

Act 2: There are more ups and downs (Ascending Action) for Julian. Rescued by the Seelie Court he now has to face the Seelie Queen all the while trying to hide his feelings for Emma. Meeting with the Queen he sees Malcolm is still alive, his uncle murdered, Annabel raised from the dead. More things going wrong with his life, even as the Queen tantalizes with the offer of the one thing he wants most in the world—a way to break the parabatai bonds, and the price. This temptation feeds into his ever increasing internal struggles. I think Annabel being raised from the dead would be considered a midpoint (big twist), because upon being reunited with his family at the London Institute he now needs to leave again to search for Annabel and the Black Volume. He doesn’t know what he wants to do with either of them yet, but he does know they need to be found. He leaves for Cornwall with Emma in search of Malcolm’s cottage. Being with Emma reinforces all of his internal struggles, raising the tension between the two of them as he can’t help but fantasize what a more ordinary life with her would be like.

Annabel finds him, and later they track her to the church where the Black Volume was used to raise her. There is a rip between dimensions, they fight off the blood demon Sabnok of Thule—they use a super rune to burn down a stone church (another obstacle). He’s angry Emma was put in danger, all his internal frustrations come to a boiling point and he and Emma fight in the cottage. She storms out only to meet up with the Riders. On the chart, I think the Riders would qualify as disaster, because it means the Unseelie King is using a group of super powerful near immortals to go after the entire Blackthorn family.

Once that fight is done, both Julian and Emma succumb to their mutual desire, a climax (fun pun) of their internal struggles to stay apart. Julian is flying high, he’s with Emma—but nope, because she confesses to him about the parabatai curse. (I know there are a lot of people in the fandom that don’t like Julian, but seriously can’t the guy get a break?)

Magnus brings them back to the London Institute where they try to piece all of these clues together. Then the Riders show up, a major fight ensues, an impossible battle against all odds, and everybody (convergence where everybody’s storylines match up in one place. Emma, Mark, Cristina, Kit—they are all there) is in danger of being slaughtered. But, Annabel comes and saves them. This is the Climax of Act 2. The Riders are gone and they finally have Annabel and the Black Volume.

Act 3: Falling/Descending Action. The function of falling action according to literarydevices.net: Audiences expect a low ebb after every great tide in order to give themselves a feeling of relief. This happens with falling action of the story or the play. In fact, it is the desire of the audiences to see the fruits of the labor of a hero or protagonist that satisfies them. If this does not happen, the audience stays unsatisfied, and the story seems incomplete. This, falling action serves as a rewarding element in a story or movie.

Julian makes a deal with Annabel to testify before the Clave. They have a plan. With Magnus’ help this is their chance to stop the Cohort, have Helen returned to the them. Emma doesn’t want to break all the parabatai bonds and Julian respects that, so they agree exile is their best option. The Blackthorns arrive in Idris to face the Clave. Robert agrees to the exile. But then Annabel is called to testify. Magnus is a no show. Questioning under the Mortal Sword breaks the last vestiges of Annabel’s fragile mind, and in the final pages a nightmare unfolds. The Final Outcome is the Resolution: Livvy is dead, Robert is dead, the Mortal Sword is shattered, the Clave is in chaos, and the Unseelie King has declared war and whisked Annabel and the Black Volume away.

I’m going to leave it up to the readers to say whether the resolution was satisfying. I will say this leads me into my next topic. LoS has its individual story arc, but it is also a part of The Dark Artifices overarching story arc. TDA overall could be superimposed on this same story structure with Livvy’s death being the midpoint (big twist).

The parabatai bonds, the Clave, Mark and Helen’s persecution, the Black Volume, the enemies of the Faerie Court, have all been a constant throughout LM and LoS: the rising/ascending action of the larger overall story.

What story structure teaches me about TSC as a whole…

The TSC series as a whole follows this pattern too…

I go chronologically in this example. TID set the introduction of the Shadowhunters in the Victorian Era. The first obstacle was Mortmain to be overcome. We move to TLH and we don’t know yet what ‘obstacle’ that series will overcome, but we do know that it is a vital puzzle piece to the overall TSC story arc. I have a theory thought that the climax of TLH will be the equivalent of Climax of Act 1. Moving into Act 2, TMI’s obstacle was overcoming Valentine and Sebastian and all the ups and downs in between. But the second Act is also about confrontation. And the Clave has its own confrontation with itself when it needs to decide whether to join Valentine. The Clave has always been in the background up till now, but it’s almost as if the Clave has become its own character with its own internal struggles and story arc in the series.

TDA continues the Ascending Action of the series as Emma and the Blackthorns work through their obstacle of Annabel and the Black Volume, the Unseelie King, the Clave, etc. This series again forces to the Clave to confront itself—who will Shadowhunters be? If this holds true I expect QoAD to have one hell of a midpoint plot twist.

TEC is another missing puzzle piece and I think (not sure because there isn’t a lot of info on it yet) the time frame will overlap with TMI and maybe TDA. Will it go so far as to help fill in the missing years between TDA and TWP? We know Magnus and Alec will have an obstacle to overcome.

And Cassie has said that TWP is the finale of the TSC series. That means that not only will TWP have its own climax, but it will doubly serve as the climax of the entire series. All of the series will somehow converge at this moment where there will be a seemingly insurmountable obstacle that Kit, Ty and Dru as protagonists will have to defeat.

It is very rare that an author has interconnecting series within a larger worldbuilding framework. And I think she might be a genius to have so many interconnecting parts follow this same overall story pattern.
