18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

i feel like it often comes across weirdly (when done by someone who doesnt speak that language) so i avoid it. there are some characters and situations where it is done well, but i avoid it

honestly im not sure. maybe ive got my heart? its such a good trope and i love those two idiots so much

okay so basically this is IDEA LAND ONLY

but, prime McShep are dating in secret bc DADT is the big bad wolf.

Cue a female Sheppard coming into their world. And shes like gorgeous, like imagine the most gorgeous looking John Sheppard female you could and that's her. Angels wept kinda thing. She comes from a world where the female to male ration is like 70-50 or something, so shes a Colonel bc I fucking said so. (feat Female versions of Ronon, Carson, Radek, Aiden, Chuck, Evan, Daniel, Cam and I was gonna do jack but I have issues considering Charlie so I nix'ed him)

But basically, shes there bc her Rodney, her husband, got caught in some Ancient Whammy device and is now sliding between worlds and this is the next one and she has the fix it and she hopes to catch him.

All good, until Rodney walks in mid yelling and just like stops, words trail off. Literally just shuts down at the sight of Female John Sheppard bc shes so hot and blushes and is just like a 10 year old with his first crush.

She finds it cute, John finds it annoying bc OF COURSE RODNEY WOULD THINK SHES HOT AND RODNEY COULD BE WITH A WOMEN IN THE OPEN IF THEY WERENT DATING.

basically its john pining over Rodney and thinking Rodney would be better off without him.

Currently Reading: i actually just finished the bear and the nightingale! so im not currently reading anything rn aha. but if you’re looking for a russian retelling of cinderella/hades & persephone that’s rooted in folklore, you should check this book out. the writing is absolutely stunning and im v curious to see where the next two books take the story!

in terms of fic, I've been absolutely obsessed with mcshep fake dating fics recently lmfao. I just finished any other way by draconiswing24441 and I highly recommend it! its funny, there were some great character moments, and it was the perfect amount of cheesiness that i needed for valentine’s day <3 https://archiveofourown.org/works/32886709

Last Series: im currently on the next generation season four! and its been ... fine. I like a few characters but I haven’t connected to most of the crew + i’m not the biggest fan of episodic tv lol. but i have a few more seasons left so we shall see how i feel after those.

I'm going to give my two cents on the tag vs no tag trans situation. And before you cringe and curse me Wade, I promise I'm not another bigot transphobe that found your inbox.

I am team tag as trans here's why. Its not about having anything for or against trans chacarters, its just about wanting to know what to expect.

If I'm searching for stories with M/M pairs I'm expecting to find stories with two cisgender male characters. I've read stories with trans characters, totally fine with that but I prefer to know its coming. Your new story, it took me by surprise but wasn't a big deal. It didn't change who the character was, just shifted how I had things pictured in my head a bit.

When it bothers me is when its not tagged in heavy slash stories. If I'm going into a story expecting two guys to bump uglies and then suddenly FtM character without bottom surgery, I'm gonna be dissapointed and bit upset. Not gonna be mad the author wrote it that way but it would've been nice to know what I was getting into because it does shift the mood.

Not gonna try telling you how to tag your stories thats completely your call as the author. My point is just that there are legitimate reasons outside of being a bigot for why people might appreciate a trans tag. Regardless of how you tag, I know I'll always read your works.

I'm glad you wrote that first paragraph cause I took one look at the size of this and went "Am I actually going to bother to read this or not?". Plusses and minuses to having open asks I guess, but some of the puritan bullshit in my inbox this evening has been deleted with extreme prejudice.

(And honestly, this didn't need to be anonymous at all. I've been pretty harsh with the assholery, but I'm not the kind of person to get annoyed unless there's actual bigotry involved.)

You raise interesting points about reader expectations and how they tie into reading satisfaction. TBH as a reader I just go with the flow. I'm very rarely disappointed by anything and rattled even less. You probably already know that I'm working my way slowly through all the McSheps on AO3. I actually don't read the tags cause I like to go in without expectations, and I'm enjoying that a lot. So, obviously this is a new take for me. I'm mulling it over.

So my plan is to use a trans tag for major characters in a pairing (either / or &) so that if someone's looking they can find them. What anyone else uses the tags for really isn't any of my business and I'm not going to lose sleep over it. But I'm not going to make a song and dance about it if, say, Ronon mentions in passing something about another character being trans or I write a fic with Doctor Ambrose again unless she's front and centre. I don't feel that small moments are worthy of being promoted and I'm of the opinion that LGBTQ+ themes don't need a TW, especially when someone has chosen to read a queer fic that I've written.

Do you multiship a lot of pairings? I noticed you have both Olicity and Lauriver posts so I'm curious if there are other usually opposing pairings that you like. (I'm also a multishipper, not into Lauriver personally I'm more into Olicity and Barriver, but I miss Laurel on the show! I'm glad we have Black Siren, but I'm still sad about Laurel's death).

I always said Laurel’s Death was stupider than Han Solos.....and Han Solo’s “Death” was pretty fucking Stupid. I mean yeah Black Siren is there but I want Laurel.

As for opposing ships that I ship I have a few that are always fighting with each other but on both teams

Hi, Im a casual larry shipper (as I ship drarry or mcshep?) so maybe thats why I don't get it. I read the post you reblog about the birthday tweet, and I wondered what was so weird or surprising about that? I remember Louis have tweeted about H birthday before? Like, reading his obs mag interview, wouldn't this kind of responses from fans that make it easy to question whether they saw him as a person (with all sorts of relationship/interaction with others)? Im just curious, sorry if out of line.

Louis and Harry haven’t really communicated on social media for a very long time. The rare occasion that it does happen tends to be a big deal.

Describe yourself as aesthetic things: Sunshine through the clouds, warm and bright but shy. Foxgloves flowers in full bloom, soft and pretty and sweet but very dangerous if handled wrong. Twilight on a clear night, full of bright colors and darkness just on the other side.

5 favorite encountered village/society: The Genii actually. I think they were an interesting people what with the underground thing and I think they were utilized on and off fairly well throughout the series.

14 most disliked episode: I have said it before and I will say it again I hate Quarantine with a fucking passion. Also though, Brain Storm. While I love Rodney in a tux (thanks for that yum!) the entier thing with him and Jennifer throughout the episode was just sad. And I'm not just saying that as a McSheper. If they wanted to give him a girlfriend thats fine (they were wrong but its fine) they needed to put more effort in. The attempts at romance were so forced, there was no chemistry, and her basically trying to change him the whole time? Yuck. Not well done. If they were dead set on making that the 'they fall in love and get to gether' episode they could have done it in a much better way.

Also not a big fan of Trinity. Gonna be honest half the time I can't watch it through to the end because it just hurts. Did he need an ego check? Yeah a little. But the way they did it just hurt so much to watch.

So this only asked for one and I listed three.... gonna stop now.

Also, Ford! Okay I know, I said I hate him but only because they did a shit just with his story. If it were me I would want to see him stick around after Lost Boys. Not come back to Atlantis but stay out with his freedom fighters and really build something up. Having him pop up from time to time as an anti-hero, meaning well and trying to do good but taking a darker road to get things done would've been much more interesting than what they did with him. Maybe end it with a redemption arch where he saves the old team and dies in the process? Yeah I like that.

Hello! I'm new to the fandom. I know you're one of the few SGA gif makers and I think you're one of the most popular ones (from what I've seen so far?). I also noticed you reblog from like only one other sga gif maker. I'm thinking about making some gifs one day—soon. What type of gifs should I make to be reblogged by you? To get promoted here I mean.

It may sound clumsy but it's not meant to be a mean ask and it's very embarrassing to ask.

P.S. Also if you know any SGA gif makers I could ask for help can you mention them please? I've got a lot to explore here.

but uh 😅 i don't really see myself as a popular blog or anything. and i just reblog what i like when i scroll through my dash/the stargate tags. i don't look at it as advertising/promoting.

the best advice i could give anyone making content (i hate calling it that, but for lack of a better word), whether it be on tumblr or anywhere else, is to make stuff that you like and you want to see. if your making stuff you like and are passionate about, like-minded ppl are gonna be drawn to you and wanna chat and thats where the fun of the internet lies. making friends with ppl who like the same stuff as you! if you focus too much on "numbers" and "popularity" its gonna suck the fun out of it for you and that stuff doesn't matter in the end, anyhoo.

my giffing skills are passable at best, but my pal @mcsheps just made a discord server for sga fans looking for resources/help making gifs! check it out here. i'll be there to help out & chat, too!!

Name: Frank. That is all you get. No it is not my real name lol

Fandoms: Alright, I'm gonna pull deep for this one other wise it would be a very boring answer. McShep obviously!... Way back in the 2008 era I wrote on FF.N for Yu-Gi-Oh, One Piece, Naruto, and Justice League. Used two diffrent names and I have no idea if I will ever claim any of the stories there.

Two-shot: I have a couple two-shot sets. More than Skin Deep and Things Left Unsaid is my fav of them. Things left Unsaid is one of my personal fav sex scenes I've ever done. Its just so soft and gooey and ugh I'm in love with it still!

Most popular multi-chapter story: I would assume How The Story Goes? I got a lot of positive feed back from that one (thank you all 💜) so I guess thats at the top. My fave multie chapter so far as well.

Actual worst part of writing: oh gosh... transitioning scenes is very hard for me. I have the bad habit of dragging scenes out because I can't figure out how to end them smoothly. Also proofing. I hate proofing. So much.

How do you choose titles: I like to use ones that are symbolic about the fic in some way. Or I also like basing them off specific lines from the story that really call out to me, a lot of my stories are titled this way.

Do you outline: heck yeah! I started doing it to keep track of events in my longer stories and it is amazing. I love it so much. Really helps me keep forward momentum when writing. 10/10 would recommend outlining of you don't!

Ideas you probably won't get to but wouldn't it be nice: Lord so many... off the top of my head, I have a big idea for a Firefly esque SGA AU that I've been kicking around for a while. But it would be big and complicated and eeeh I'm scared of it lol. But hey your never know I'm apparently getting more comfortable with bigger stories. Also I would love to jump ships at some point and write for things other than McShep, but actually doing that has proven very difficult for me.

Call outs @ yourself: why do they always have to live happily ever after? Mix things up a little woman! Also. Those stories in your WIP folder that are two freaking years old finish them!!....And write more top John!

Best writing traits: I have been told by several people I keep them in character well, so I guess I'm pretty good as that. I think I do sappy porn really well? Dialogue maybe? I enjoy doing dialogue, and think I'm okay at it. Maybe? I have no clue what I'm good at.

Spicy tangential opition: okay, okay...I will not rant, I will not rant... The "chose not to use archive warnings" option is not a free pass to leave Dead Dove stories untagged! Tag your crap properly people! It is your responsibility as the author to warn people. Like just asdghjk... I will not rant here.

Catch-up Game

Tag nine people you want to know better/catch up with.

Last song: No clue... I was listening to my 80's pop station on Pandora so probably something by Michael Jackson or Pat Benatar.

Last movie: HP and the Chamber of Secrets. Most recent movie that I watched for the first time, Pin (watched it for David Hewlett, was not disappointed).

Currently reading: Fanfiction wise McShep, also a bit of Drarry. Published books, I'm slowly making my way through everything by Robin Hobb. Currently reading Assassin's Apprentice. (I am now going to gush and recommend her books if you don't want to read that skip to next question 🙂)

If you like fantasy stuff I HIGHLY recommend Hobb's work. She is fantastic! Amazing indepth world building, classic fantasy elements with some awesome originality, and she writes great strong female characters. Most of her stuff is all trilogies which IMO is the perfect length for a series, and while there is an order to the trilogy sets they can be read (mostly) in any order. I started in the middle with the Live Ships trilogy and I can not recommend it enough! Like seriously. Very original plot, strong female lead, pirates, mystery, action, dragons, need I say more? If you are looking for some new fantasy stuff please check her out. Overall I would rate her books T. There is some romance and violence but nothing heavy. Now back to our regularly scheduled program.

Currently watching: lol Friends for like the tenth time because I watched the reunion special. Also, all of the Harry Potter movies again. And SGA is always in the mix.

Currently craving: Good, fresh sea food! Would kill for some crab legs or oysters!
