Doraemon Vol. 17 from The Complete Works of Fujiko F. Fujio
Tumblr media
The stories here were published in 1986–1994 and include the last short-form Doraemon manga stories ever released. (We're not done with the Complete Works series yet though.) Some of the most iconic ones from this volume (as determined by my personal experience and biases):
"恐怖のディナーショー" ("Terrifying Dinner Show", 1989): Gian tasks Nobita with distributing tickets to his dinner and a show, but the prospect of Gian's singing combined with his cooking is so horrifying that everyone makes up excuses to avoid coming.
"ドラえもんが重病に?" ("Is Doraemon Seriously Ill?", 1989): Doraemon refuses to return to the 22nd Century for a health checkup, not wanting to leave Nobita alone, but then starts malfunctioning badly.
"宇宙戦艦のび太を襲う" ("Space Battleship Attack on Nobita", 1990): Doraemon gives Precognitive Dream Candy to Nobita, who ends up dreaming of an alien invasion. Nobita and Doraemon attempt to warn everyone, but aren't taken seriously.
"ネコののび太いりませんか" ("Would Anyone Want a Nobita Cat?", 1990): To try and convince his mom to keep an abandoned cat, Nobita turns himself into the cat using the Animal Reincarnation Egg, hoping to show her how helpful a pet cat can be.
"ハワイがやってくる" ("Hawaii is Coming", 1990): Nobita is envious that everyone but him has gone on interesting family trips over summer vacation, so Doraemon takes him on a trip to Hawaii by using the Time-compression Gun to speed up plate tectonics, moving the Hawaiian Islands close enough to be reachable from Japan by rowboat.
"ガラパ星からきた男" ("The Man from Planet Galapa", 1994): Nobita doesn't have enough money to buy the latest popular video game, so he time travels one month into the future to get some from his future allowance. However, he discovers that the town has somehow been taken over by ant people. This is the only "intermediate-length" Doraemon manga story, being shorter than the Doraemon Long Stories that the movies were based on, but still having originally been published over the course of several months.

July 22nd is...
Creme Brulee Day -  Crème Brûlée has been with us quite a long time, appearing first in a recipe book by one Francois Massialot in 1691. Known as the Cuisinier royal et bourgeois it held the first recorded recipe for this incredible treat, though when it was translated to English it became known as “Burnt Cream”, which is perhaps not an altogether unjust description of this confection. Oddly, for all that is deeply associated with France, and specifically with Paris, from 1740 to 1980 it appeared in not one French cookbook. Considering that decades reputation for utter hedonism and decadence, Crème Brûlée came back onto the scene in a big way in the 1980’s, and became the “darling of the restaurant boom.”
Fragile X Awareness Day -  Fragile X syndrome is a mutation of the FMR1 gene and is the most common form of inherited intellectual disability. It impacts men more than women, and while a person may have the gene mutation, sometimes they do not have any apparent signs. Those who do show signs may have mild or severe symptoms. Physical, intellectual and behavioral symptoms may appear, and they vary between males and females. Women tend to have similar but milder symptoms or none at all.
Hammock Day - A hammock is a sling made of fabric, rope or netting. When suspended between two points, a hammock forms a sling used for swinging, sleeping or resting. We usually suspend a hammock between trees or posts.  The hammock dates back thousands of years to Central America where it protected people from creatures and dirt. However, the netted bed didn’t find Europe until explorers brought it back in the 17th century. Not long after, the hammock found its way onto naval ships, providing comfort and maximizing space.
Mango Day -  Originating in Bangladesh and parts of Myanmar and India, hundreds of varieties of mangoes grow around the world today.  Mangoes also pack in the nutrients. Did you know that one mango contains almost two and a half times more vitamin C than an orange? Mangoes are also high in vitamins A, B-6 and K, antioxidants, potassium and dietary fiber.
Penuche Fudge Day -  Penuche is pronounced pe-new-chee. The Italian form of the word is panucci. The fudge-like candy includes the following ingredients: brown sugar, butter, vanilla, and milk. Lighter in color than traditional fudge, penuche tastes like maple thanks to the brown sugar. If you are looking to celebrate, many shops in New England sell this fudge. There they will add pecans and other nuts, especially if making a candy form of penuche. Southerners call it brown sugar fudge candy.
Rat Catcher’s Day - Commemorates the story of the Pied Piper of Hamelin. According to the folktale, residents of the German town of Hamelin hired a strangely dressed man to rid their village of rats. The Pied Piper of Hamelin did so by playing his flute. Upon finishing the task, the townsfolk refused to pay — so the Pied Piper returned. Once again, the Pied Piper played his flute while the children followed him. And with the Pied Piper, the children vanished, never to return.  While a harrowing tale of revenge doesn’t seem like something to celebrate, someone found a way. Depending on where you live, the day includes festivals and re-enactments.
Refreshment Day - Celebrates fun at the hottest time of the year. The day toasts those moments of ice, cold refreshment, especially a nice cold beer. Whether you’re at the beach or wrapping up a long day of work, it’s nice to know there’s a glass waiting for you somewhere. The dog days of summer call for coolers full of ice. Long weekends and vacation days beckon, too.

What’s next for Divine Patronage?
So my Ranma / Ah My Goddess! / other miscellaneous anime that take place in 1990′s Tokyo fanfic has become more popular than anything else I’ve ever written. I may have classes but this is my designated ‘leisure activity’ now for sure.
Anyway, I have a rough idea for this initial ‘arc’, and how it’ll end. Fine. Whatever. More importantly, though, I have continuing ideas about how to cross over more and more mid-90′s anime and other things into this mishmash where Urd and Ranma have to ‘problem-solve’ things. Christ I wrote like 9 possible arc setups last night; it’ll take me years to make good on them if I do at all.
That’s why I’m a-posting brief summaries of them here, so if I give up on these people can just steal em’.
1. CRIMES OF THE MISHIMA GROUP AGAINST GOOD TASTE
Sayoko Mishima and her zaibatsu god-nap Keiichi and in doing so royally piss off Belldandy. Urd has to snatch the poor kid, who is now a minor god, out from Sayoko’s clutches before Belldandy just loses it and nukes earth in silent rage. Ranma can’t beat the compound alone, though, so Urd turns to Akiko Natsume - the actual head of Mishima - and her all purpose combat android for some help. Unfortunately, the android has a cat brain. Cue Ranma struggling to confront his fears to save the world.
Crossover with: All Purpose Cultural Catgirl Nuku Nuku, a medium-obscure OVA from the 90′s starring Megumi Hayashibara as the wacky cat-bot-girl with Saeko Shimazu (Kodachi’s voice among others) as Akiko. Good fun.
2. FATE / STRANGE; DAYS
Remember Lind, the Valkyrie from the Angel Eater Arc of AMG? Well, she back. She intervened in Fate / Zero’s Holy Grail War (assumed to take place around 1994) and contracted w/ Kiritsugu the way Urd did with Ranma. Now Kiri may have lost all his lady companions, but he gets Illya back from Germany and is raising her alongside Shirou with the help of Illya’s wacky maids. Maybe lil’ Rin and Sakura are involved, too, I dunno.
Anyway, Lind considers the Sailor Senshi a threat to the divine order (they do appear to predate human civilization) - especially since Saturn’s Glaive of Silence is believed to be the Norse Gungnir, Spear of Destiny, Odin’s superweapon that could (even in the OG myths) rewrite reality itself to render enemies nonexistent.
So Lind gets Kiritsugu, Arturia Saber, and Prisma Illya to go to Tokyo and track down Sailor Saturn with Ranma’s help. Then they end up teleporting to the distant past of the Silver Milennium, back when the Senshi’s magic rendered the other planets of the Solar System inhabitable. Cue a string of John Carter references.
Crossover with: Fate / Zero, Fate Kaleid Liner Prisma Illya. Might even separate the Fate story from the whole Saturn / Gungnir subplot - they’re just hunting Kirei and Gil, then. Sure. Fine.
3. THE FUTURE IS HERE AND IT SUCKS
Skuld time travels into the future, only to find that almost every single timeline ends with humanity being wiped out before the 22nd century - perhaps by SM’s Great Freeze, perhaps by other factors. Unfortunately, she forgot to close her possible-future-timeline portals properly, which leads to various cyberpunk futures bouncing off one another for supremacy in 1996.
(Look I wanted to just fuckin do BGC or GITS crossover. Couldn’t decide. Why not both?)
Crossover with: BGC 2032 (Or my 2069 rebot), Ghost in the Shell, Silent Mobius (maybe)
4. GAMES OF THE GODS
The obligatory ‘gang plays an RPG’ sitcom episode, only a) it’s Cyberpunk 2020 because I’ve read that system’s books, and b) the goddesses all bring their boytoys along to be sucked into the game world as their player characters. (Urd gets Ranma, Bell gets Keiichi, Skuld is the GM, Peorth gets Ryoga, Lind gets Kiritsugu) (I guess I better do an arc where Peorth patronizes Ryoga to screw with Urd...)
5. GUNS, BOMBS, ROCK N’ ROLL
Ranma gets dragged along by Urd for a vacation, theoretically to LA. But then after getting bored of the Obligatory Beach Episode, Urd rediscovers that she has a daughter in Chicago - Rally Vincent. She and Ranma rush off to screw up the events of the manga and protect her daughter from the brainwashing of a lesbian rapist crime lord. (I wish I was making that last bit up). Maybe Priss of BGC tags along to really hammer in the WACKY KENICHI SONODA CROSSOVER thing?
Crossover with: Gunsmith Cats, Riding Bean, maybe BGC
6. HEISEI BLOSSOMS BLOOMING
The Japanese government decides to reactivate the Teikoku Kagekidan project, this time using idoru as the mecha pilots instead of the Takarazura Revue thing they had going on in the 20′s. The K-on girls audition, the Love Live girls audition, someone in the Ranma cast or something tries out as well. Mecha are now nuclear-powered instead of steam-powered (whatever that means)
Crossover with: Original Sakura Wars franchise, Tite Kubo iteration non-involved. maybe K-on and Love Live
7. RANMA’S LUDICROUS EXCURSION: STAR-DIAMOND DUST IS UNCRUSADERABLE
Ranma gets a stand. Urd thinks it’s like her angel. Yare yare daze.
Crossover with: What do you think, genius?
8. ETERNAL SUMMER
Ranma gets trapped in a temporal anomaly centered around Tomobiki Town. Now it’s August 1982, Ataru and Lum are about to get married, and unless he can stop the total breakdown of the pocket reality within the seven days before the time loop resets he’ll become part of it forever. Trippy New Wave Existentialist Bullshit - Screwball Comedy meets Body Horror. Also see: Higurashi.
Crossover with: Urusei Yatsura
9. TRICOWBOYOUTLAW BEBOPGUNSTAR: EFF YOU, SPACE COWBOY
A valiant attempt to crossover all three of the late 90′s ‘Cowboy shonen’ anime of the time in one universe. A shared universe? Nah. We’re probably just gonna transplant all the characters into 90′s Tokyo again and watch the body count pile up.
Crossover with: Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star, Trigun. Oh, and maybe one of those ‘robo-maid’ shows from the aughties (Hand Maid May, Mahoromatic, Steel Angel Kurimi), just to fuck with everyone.
10. COPS AND ROBOTS
Ranma gets in trouble with the police for sneaking onto the Babylon Project, forced into community service, and then ends up blackmailed into the long-running grudgematch between the SV2 Labor Squad and the Tokyo Highway Patrol.
Crossover with: You’re Under Arrest, Patlabor (original OVA mostly)
11. SUPERIOR AUTOMATRONIC DISPUTE RESOLUTION: GO NAGAI EAT YOUR HEART OUT
Skuld gets in a fight with some deities from some rival pantheons, and as a proper grudgematch resolution they all resolve to build Giant Robots and then Battle Royale them. Ranma has to pilot one.
Crossover with: NOTHING.
12. THE HOUND OF ULSTER BARKS AT MIDNIGHT
Cu Chullain, husbando of Ex-Valkyrie and turncoat Irish goddess Scathach, teams up with Ranma in Dublin to stop IRA extremists from resurrecting the Tuatha De Dannan, specifically the Morrigan. A teenage Bazett (from Fate) shows up and gets all fangirly.
13. TALES FROM THE OOPS
An abandoned particle accelerator built in the 80′s near Stockholm may or may not cause Ragnarok. Ranma and some edgy Swedish Teenagers have to deal with 90′s recession bullshit and clean the place out
Crossover with: Tales from the Loop, Things From the Flood
That’s about it, honestly. I have other things I’d like to crossover with, tbh, mostly mecha stuff. Among them:
- Cannon God Exaxxion
- Eva
- Gundam UC
- Muv-Luv
-Negmia / another Ken Akumatsu trashpile (and I mean that in the best possible way)
Shit this is fun. Imma make another one of these posts with even more ludicrious crossovers later. Peace out.

summer studying challenge week two ✨
And another week has passed! Two more until I would be travelling to the United Kingdom for my holidays. As it is Sunday, that means week two of the study challenge posed by @myhoneststudyblr.
20th July - Do you usually go on vacation during the summer?
Usually, yes I do! Together with my parents most of the time, the last few years our destination has been the United Kingdom, next year we will probably visit the coastal regions of Portugal. We usually leave for about ten days before returning, to make sure we can also visit some smaller things from our home, like going to Antwerp or Paris for a day or two with the Thalys.
21st July - What is the best vacation you have ever been on? (note: does not have to have been during summer)
My favourite holidays must have been Wales/England/France 2019, last year I visited Caernaforn in the most beautiful cottage, the whole landscape was incredible, I cannot express how much I adored the whole thing. I personally love Wales in general, Snowdonia and the dales in that area are absolutely wonderful.
Tumblr media
22nd July -  What is your dream vacation?
I am dying to visit Florence with my best friend, @bonclay47, I honestly would cry if we would visit together because I want to show her all the beautiful spots and just eat Italian bread with her and live the cottagecore life style to be honest! God once this pandemic is over, I will be booking a ticket to Florence, an airbnb and aa- I hope to see my best friend in real life!!
23rd July - What is the worst vacation you have ever been on?
The worst holidays I have been on, which I feel quite sad to say, was to Normandy two years prior. It was the moment where my body could not handle the destructive habits I had subjected it to anymore, and it just shut down, I could not even walk anymore. It was quite terrifying. It really ruined the whole ordeal, and I still feel bad about it, I ruined my parents’ holiday too...
24th July - What is your favourite vacation memory?
My favourite memory must be trudging through the Welsh farmlands, crossing cattle and rivers and plants, and then just walking against a cemetery built in the early nineteenth century. God that was absolutely amazing! We spend hours at the cemetery, looking around, sitting, reading. Afterward we found a literal microwave in a field.
25th July - What was is your favourite event or day in the summer?   Are you a ‘summer person’ or do you prefer it when it is colder?
I personally have a huge preference for colder weather, although I love wearing summer dresses and cottagecore/light academia clothing. They are so nice and flowy, it is great! There are not that many events in the Netherlands during summer that I would go to, considering I am not a festival person, but I adore evening walks, along the river banks near my home. Yet I definitely prefer colder weather, I enjoy the autumn a lot. I love the rain, the falling of the leaves, the heavy tweed coats. That is what really gets my spirit going, I always feel so, so productive during the autumn times.
26th July - What is your typical daily routine in the summer?
I would usually wake up in the early morning, around 6am-ish, I will make my bed and get dressed. Then I will go downstairs and take a morning walk if the weather allows it. When I return at about seven, I have breakfast with my parents, after I play some animal crossing (I am in love with the game, yet I do not have online yet, if my mutuals play the game too, I would love to get online!) before either heading to the gym or doing some studying until noon with a tea break in between at about half past ten.
My afternoons are usually all over the place, but I try to structure my day in such a way that I am not bored. I will either reply to messages, write poetry, read, really anything creative. I eat at about six to half past six in the evening, after which I usually drink tea on my porch with my parents before taking a shower and getting ready to unwind from my day. I often read during this period, or I watch a documentary, I have been obsessed with Helicopter ER recently! I head to bed at about 11-ish to read a little and then really go to sleep.

Dear TJ
Summary: Cyrus writes TJ a letter while he’s in the hospital for a suicide attempt.
Trigger warnings ⚠️ Metion of suicide attempt (nothing heavy)
Word count: 1806
Dear TJ,
While you’re reading this your head is probably laying down on a rough hospital pillow and your body is covered by the fuzzy blankets I brought to you three days ago. You’re probably wondering why I’m writing you a letter instead of a phone call, well the answers simple. The hospital monitors phone calls and this is more personable. I don’t really know how start this, that might be why I’m rambling on, I don’t want to say the wrong thing, well write the wrong thing.
Do you remember when we were 14, and going into our freshmen year of high school? We were treading on the line of friends and more than friends. God, I never thought that I would actually being dating THE Theodore James Kippen. Do you remember that night when I was sleeping over at your house and you said “let’s sneak out.” I was so nervous, but at the same time I wanted to impress you. You packed a blanket and an extra hoodie in your bag and we climbed out the window, we headed to the beach. We held hands the whole 37 minute walk there, the only time we let go was when you talked with your hands. I hated it when you talked with your hands that night because I missed the feel of your soft skin on mine. We talked about everything and nothing all in one. I told you about my schedule that the school sent me and you told me about that book you just read. I was still in shock that you were a huge ass nerd. When we finally got to the beach we laid out the blanket you packed and sat on the sand. I laid my head down on your chest and both our hearts were beating abnormally fast. I’ll never forget the cheesiest words that you ever said to me “my heart only beats like this for you.” I knew at the moment that I was falling in love. I decided to take a leap faith and start leaning in to kiss you but, you had the same idea. This wasn’t our first kiss and it sure wasn’t going to be our last but it was special. It said everything we were scared to say and more. We stayed like that, exchanging kisses with the stars in the sky for a while, I felt safe, damn I never felt that safe before. When we pulled apart your eyes were sparkling and your smile was even more gorgeous than the night sky. You took my hand and said “Cy, let’s go skinny dipping.” I thought you were crazy. The only thing going through my mind was “I’m going to get hypothermia and die” but I was drunk on love and decided to go anyway. It was 1’ o’clock in the morning and we were running into the ocean, we were the only two people in the world at that moment. I wanted to stay in that one moment forever. Once we got out of the ocean we put out clothes back on and cuddled under the blanket. You whispered in my ear “Cyrus Joshua Goodman, I’m falling in love with you. Please don’t break my heart.” My reply is still the same today “I don’t plan on it.”
I guess I’m just going down memory lane because all I can think about right now is our freshmen homecoming dance. Do you remember how you asked me? You pulled a Troy Bolton and got the whole basketball team together. Every single player had a tshirt with a different letter and colour on it representing a rainbow, in spelt out “HOMECOMING?” I jumped into your arms with an excited yes.
That Saturday couldn’t come fast enough. We were so excited. You told me the seniors on the basketball team said “Kippen, you don’t wear tuxes, you wear dress pants and a dress shirt. Got it?” We went out and both bought black dress pants, you bought a grey button down with a yellow tie, I got a yellow button down with a grey tie. Your mom wouldn’t stop taking pictures of us. At one point you yelled “MOM! I KNOW WE’RE THE CUTEST COUPLE AT GRANT BUT YOU GOTTA TAKE IT DOWN A NOTCH.” I kinda wish you took your own advice because you went haywire when we didn’t win homecoming court. When Melissa Jacobs and Josiah Grant won, you yelled “THIS IS HOMOPHOBIA!” Then we left. We went to Denny’s and shared the all you can eat pancakes and bottomless coffee. We were there until 12 am. I think that was one of my favourite nights.
Christmas vacation our sophomore year. We’ve been together for a little over a year and I wanted this to be absolutely perfect for you. You told me that your Christmas will be perfect if you had me by your side. I went shopping for weeks having no clue what to get you until I saw it. It was a key chain that said “drive safe, I need you home. Love Cyrus.” I also got you a sugar cookie candle with our picture on it. We begged your mom for weeks to let me spend the night, and on the 22nd and she actually let me. We spent that whole night in a blanket fort watching Christmas movies (even though I’m Jewish) and stealing kisses. You snuck down to the basement and stole a bottle of wine out of your moms wine cabinet. We knew we could get caught but we didn’t care. We finished the whole bottle and by the end we were a laughing mess, I can’t believe we didn’t wake your parents. That night I fell asleep with my head on your chest and your arm around my body, the next morning I woke up with a hangover. I wouldn’t trade it for a thing.
The summer going into our junior year of high school was magical. We went camping and hiking, we stayed up to see the sun rise. We picked flowers in flower fields and you taught me how to surf. I never thought I could fall more in love with you than I already was, but that summer proved me wrong.
I’ll never forget that night when there was a knock on my window at 1:37 am. I got out of my bed wearing your oversized gym shorts and that’s when I saw you. You were wearing your glasses but, your eyes were still puffy from crying. I slowly tried to help you get into my bedroom, once you hit the floor the tears started rolling out of you. We sat there on the floor for what felt like centuries. You laid your head on my lap while I played with your hair and whispered calming things into your ear. Once your tears subsided I asked what was going on. Your answer was “I have no clue.” We spent the rest of the night cuddled in my bed watching re-runs of friends and eating cookie dough ice cream. The next day you went to the doctors and got on antidepressants.
The few months following your doctors appointment were rough, but babe we got through them, and we learned to love each other even more.
Then last week happened. You texted me and told me that you were staying home from school because “you weren’t feeling it” I understood. I went through the whole day knowing I was going to surprise you at home after school, but then I got a text message. The text said “I love you.” I knew I shouldn’t be worried about it, but I was. I left the school as soon as I read it and hurried to your house. It was only a 5 minute drive. The door was locked but luckily I knew where the spare key was kept, it was under the flower pot. I stepped into your yellow house calling out your name. I got no response. I went into your room and that’s where I saw you. I was so thankful, I thought you were just taking a nap so I thought I’d join you. That’s when I got closer and realised that was all a fantasy. You had pill bottles littering your floor. Your anti-depressant, sleeping pills, and some of your moms prescribed pain killers. I froze at the moment, I had no clue how bad it was. I called 9-1-1 and that’s when the words suicide attempt exited my mouth. The ambulance came fast, and I called your mom, she said she’d meet us at the hospital. The ambulance wouldn’t let me drive with them, I followed them in my car. I waited in the waiting room for 6 hours, on edge, we didn’t know if you were alive. The doctors finally came out and told us we could see you. When I saw you, tears fell out of both of our eyes. The only words coming out of your mouth was the repetition of “I’m sorry.” I said it then, and dammit I’ll say it again, TJ you have nothing to be sorry about. That night I spent the night in your hospital room, the next morning you were being transported to a hospital for teenagers with mental health issues. Your nurse told me that I shouldn’t see you everyday. It might make your recovery harder, and you need to find the strength to wake up in the morning. If you think I haven’t seen you in three days because I fell out of love with you, it’s the exact opposite. I haven’t seen you because I love you. I need you to get better Teej. The amount of times I’ve been in that parking lot a drove away is crazy, I’m hoping they don’t have security cameras because they probably think I’m stalking a patient. I need you to know that I love you.
Theodore, I know these few months are going to be rough, but you can’t get rid of me that easily. I’m going to be here for you through your highs and lows, ups and downs. I’ll be there when you can’t sleep or when you feel like you can’t wake up. You are worth more than the stars in the sky, and I can’t imagine a life without you. You’re strong and brave and beautiful and miraculous. You’re going to get through this. And I’m going to love you through it all.
I’ll see you tomorrow with some sweatshirts, sweatpants, pens and notebooks, I might even bring a coffee if they allow it. Then I won’t see you until you get out.
Theodore James Kippen, I am so utterly in love with you. Hold on for me please.
Love always,
Cyrus

Lore Episode 28: Making a Mark (Transcript) - 22nd February 2016

I talk a lot about New England folklore. One of the biggest reasons for that is because the north-east part of the United States serves as a sort of cultural bridge between the old world and the new. It was there, more than anywhere else, where the old tales and superstitions first set root on American soil. The witch hysteria of the late 1600s was an aftershock of a larger tremor that shook Europe for decades. The American version of the vampire has roots in eastern European folktales and legends. Even holidays like Christmas and Hallowe’en were really just old-world injections into the cultural soft tissue of America, and the needle pierced us in New England first… most of the time. There are other parts of the country that played host to pioneers and adventurers as well, people who risked their lives and loved ones to travel across the cold Atlantic and build a new home here on these shores, and the age of colonization brought more than just settlers and supplies. It brought lore. Settlers up and down the east coast of what would one day become America came ashore with heads full of superstitions and a propensity to attach meaning to things we might overlook today. Put another way, they brought food for their journey, and the seeds to grow more here. They came with minds that were perfectly wired to build new folklore on the backs of old tales: new fears, new legends, new hauntings, and we can still find those creations in many places along the eastern seaboard - places like North Carolina. Before the vacation homes and sun-baked tourists crowded along the sandy shores of the Outer Banks, pioneers were attempting to carve out an existence there. Those that survived left behind more than buildings and descendants, though. Today, the Outer Bank is home to tales that still send shivers down the spines of locals and tourists alike, because folklore, whether its new or old, has a way of leaving its mark. I’m Aaron Mahnke, and this is Lore. Brigands Bay sits on the northern coast of the southern part of Hatteras Island, between the towns of Frisco and Buxton. Hatteras is part of the Outer Banks, which, on the map, look like nothing more than a thin string of earth and sand a few miles off the coast of North Carolina. Imagine the island as a backwards capital L, hugging the coastline near the Pamlico River. But don’t let that thin strip of sand and stay-parks fool you – Hatteras, like many of the other islands out there, is still big enough for stories to take root, and that’s because it has a long history, longer than most parts of the country, in fact. Near the northern tip of the island, just to the west, is Roanoke Island, the site of England’s first settlement in the new world. Although the colony there disappeared sometime between 1586 and 1587, Europeans didn’t stay away long, and it was their constant activity in the region that gave rise to so much of the local stories, still told today. There’s a legend in Hatteras of the horrible deeds of one particular captain. According to the story, in 1710 an English ship crossed the Atlantic carrying refugees from Germany. They were known as “palatines”, and they had initially fled the middle Rhine area to settle in England, but there were so many that the English decided to help them move to the new world. When these refugees boarded the ship, they hid their valuables, afraid that they might be stolen by the ship’s crew. After a successful journey, the ship entered the waters inside the Outer Banks, heading toward New Bern on the coast. Their new home was in sight, and after such a long journey it must have been a relief to see it. Sensing they would soon disembark, the palatines removed their valuables from hiding and gathered them together for the final leg of their journey. Now, maybe it was the sight of all that treasure – the jewellery and coins and precious heirlooms – that triggered what happened next, or perhaps the crew had planned it all along. But here was their chance, and they decided to act. Claiming that the weather wasn’t good enough for a landing, they told the passengers to return to their cabins and wait until morning. During the night, the crew moved systematically throughout the ship, killing the sleeping refugees and stealing their treasures. After killing the passengers, the captain and crew set fire to the ship and headed to shore in lifeboats, but the ship didn’t sink. Instead, the legend claims that the flames grew higher and higher while the ship began to move forward into calm waters. Fearing for their lives, the crew abandoned the lifeboat and were never seen again. To this day, locals whisper of a ghost ship that can be seen under the first full moon of September. This ship, orange with flames, passes near the Ocracoke inlet three times, and then vanished as quickly as it appeared.
Another prominent local story involves the capture of the legendary pirate, Edward Teach, also known as Blackbeard. Teach patrolled the Atlantic and Caribbean in his ship, Queen Anne’s Revenge, for a little over two years, and in the process became one of the most feared pirates of his day. As history records, Blackbeard was finally cornered by Lieutenant Robert Maynard and his men in November of 1718, just inside the Outer Banks near the southern tip of Hatteras. In a battle that was horribly bloody for both sides, the great Blackbeard suffered no fewer than 20 sword wounds and five gunshots before he was finally brought down. The English beheaded his corpse and tossed the body into the sea. His head, though, was kept. Maynard hung it from the bowsprit of his ship, and it was turned in later to collect his reward. Locals there near Ocracoke tell of a spot known as Teach’s Hole, where the legendary pirate once anchored his ship. If the stories are to be believed, Blackbeard’s ghost haunts the location – there are those who have claimed to see strange lights, both above and below the water there on the coast. They say it’s Blackbeard, swimming through the waters he used to patrol. Others say you can hear voices there. When storms blow in and waves crash against the shore, locals claim you can hear something besides the rain and thunder. It’s the sound of a man crying out in pain, the same words, over and over: “Where is my head?”
Hatteras is still popular with visitors today, though I would assume none of them are pirates. People still build homes there, they have streets and restaurants and parks and trees, tourists flock there every summer to take in the scenery, but right there on Snug Harbour Drive, near Brigands Bay, is a tree that’s called the island home for centuries. In fact, it was most likely ancient when the colonists first arrived hundreds of years before, and although most of the people driving by it are completely unaware, this tree has a story to tell. According to local legend, it starts with the arrival of a women near Frisco back in the early 1700s. They say her name was Cora, and she brought along a baby. They were always seen together, the child held tight to her chest or strapped into a sling. For an area frequented by sailors or widows of those who were lost at sea, this wasn’t an unusual sight. The Brigands Bay area was even more wooded then than it is now, and it’s said that she took up shelter in the forest there rather than in the small community that was forming on the coast. But it wasn’t living on the literal outskirts of society that earnt her a reputation as an outsider, it was her knack for the… unusual. Some have said that cows she touched would dry up and turn sick; when the fishing got rough and the nets were empty, Cora still managed to bring in enough to feed herself and the child; and when a local boy decided to poke fun at the baby, legend says that he got so sick he nearly died. Naturally, people talked. People always talk when things don’t fit the norm, and that talk spread. In an era when it didn’t take much more than an unpleasant disposition or off-colour comment to earn a woman a reputation as a witch, it seemed Cora was making it a little too easy for the locals to be suspicious.
The legend also tells of how during Cora’s stay, a ship called the Susan G ran aground off the northern coast of the island. The captain and his crew left the ship and came to town, and from there they made plans to repair it and continue their commercial journey. It sounds simple, right? Just repair the damage and move on – but doing so meant unloading all of the cargo, piece by piece, and bringing it to shore. The captain’s name, according to the legend, was Eli Blood. Now, that better have been his real name, because… come on, how perfect is that, right? Captain Blood. This captain enlisted the help of locals to move the cargo off his grounded ship and in the process, he got to know quite a few of them, which was a good thing judging by the repairs, he and his crew from Salem, Massachusetts, were bound to be there for a very long time - and it was during this long stay that he and his crew heard the stories of Cora and her baby. The heart of the rumours pointed to one, single, sensational conclusion: Cora was a witch, and the child she brought with her was her familiar, her supernatural pet. And, as it turned out, Captain Blood was probably the last person on earth that this mysterious Cora wanted to draw the suspicion of. The captain, it seems, was not just a sailor from Salem, Massachusetts. He claimed to know Cotton Mather, the puritan minister who was a passionate voice in support of the Salem Witch Trials. He had read Mather’s books, he was a student of Mather’s methods, and apparently shared the man’s intense hatred for the dark arts. So much so, in fact, that he considered himself a “white witch”, someone trained in combatting the forces of darkness with their own brand of magic. He claimed to have his own familiars, which he fed with drops of blood, and those familiars acted like spies for him, informing him of black magic nearby. Captain Eli Blood considered himself a witch hunter. Now, I realise this sounds incredibly hypocritical, which it is of course, but back then it was also heroic – it gave the people of the island a feeling of safety. At last, they might have said, we have someone here who can deal with Cora, the witch, if she gets out of hand. And that’s when the body of a man washed up on the beach.
The body wasn’t one of Captain Blood’s men, but it drew his concern nonetheless. It was the body of a young man from town, and although no makes could be found that pointed to the cause of his death, there were a number of other clues. Local legend tells of how the man’s face was twisted into a horrible expression of fear. His hands, they say, were clasped together, as if he had been kneeling before someone powerful, begging for his life. The man even had the numbers “666” carved into his forehead. The most damning evidence of all, however, were the footprints in the sand near his body. They were smaller than a man’s, and they moved away from the body in a clear, definable direction: the woods. Someone needed to investigate the man’s death, they said, and who better to do it than the witch hunter himself, Captain Eli Blood – he had little else to do while he waited on the ship’s owner to send help and supplies. This sounded like the perfect job for his idle mind. Captain Blood, for his part, agreed. He gathered his men, mostly slaves from Barbados who all had a healthy cultural fear of black magic, and together they went in search of Cora’s shack in the woods. When they found her, she was inside making breakfast for herself and her child; the men seized them both and brought them back to town. They accused Cora of witchcraft and murder, of course – how could they not, in a society governed by deep suspicion and intense fear of people who failed to fit in? Now, before you write them off as barbaric, remember that this is a flaw we have yet to overcome – we still fear those who are different from us. Maybe it’s genetic, or maybe it’s culturally ingrained. That fear is like a snake hiding in the bushes, always ready to strike, and it struck hard for Cora.
Captain Blood had her bound, left hand to right ankle, right hand to left ankle, and then carried her to the shore. There, he ordered her to be thrown into the water – it was a test, he said. If she floated, she was a witch, and seeing as how the tide was low and the waves were calm, of course she didn’t sink, how could she? Satisfied with the results, the captain moved on to his second test. Pulling his knife free, the man tried to cut a handful of Cora’s hair, but the blade failed to do its job. More proof, he declared, that she was, in fact, a witch… or at least proof that he needed to sharpen his knife, but hey, I’m no witch hunter. The final test was the most creepy and ambiguous of them all. Taking a bowl of seawater, the captain asked each of his crew to cut their fingertip and drip blood into the bowl. When they had all done so, he stirred this mixture with his knife until it foamed and swirled, and then he chanted words that no one else understood while staring hard into the bowl, and then raised his face in triumph. “She’s a witch,” he exclaimed, and then, as if needing a second opinion, he passed the bowl around to the others. Each of them, according to the story, saw two things in the bowl: the devil and the face of Cora. That was all the proof they needed – Cora was a witch, pure and simple, and now her execution would be completed.
The captain had his men gather firewood and branches and pile them at the base of a large oak tree near the bay, and then Cora and her child were tied to the tree, ready to be burnt alive. Now, what happened next will sound unusual. That’s the fingerprint of an old story – they sometimes take on a patina of oddities and otherworldliness. Sometimes, the patina adds texture, even value, to an antique – I’ll let you be the judge. According to the locals who tell the tale to this day, Captain Blood approached the tree with a lit torch in his hand, ready to set fire to the wood and burn the witch and her familiar alive, but another captain, a local man named John Smith, held him back, asking instead for Cora’s trial to go through the proper, legal channels. Smith, you see, being a sane man, wanted to do things right, but as the men argued, two things happened. First, the child in Cora’s arms twisted and writhed as it transformed into a large, black cat with shimmering green eyes. Second, a dark, ominous cloud began to gather overhead in an otherwise cloudless sky. Both men cried out in horror, and then Captain Blood lunged forward with the torch to ignite the kindling. It was at that very moment that the cloud overhead rumbled, and a lightning bolt flashed down, striking the tree and blinding everyone around it. When the smoke cleared, the tree was empty. The ropes were still there, as was the pile of branches and firewood, but the woman and the cat were gone without a trace. Well, that’s not true, there was one clue, and it’s difficult to believe. There, etched by lightning into the bark of the old oak tree were four, clear letters, which spelled out one single word: C, O, R, A. Cora.
The Outer Banks is just like any other place in the world on many levels. It has a history, and over the centuries that comprise that history, stories have been told. In a lot of ways, story is one of our greatest legacies. Wherever we’ve been, we’ve left story in our wake like footprints in the mud. Some stories are true and act like time capsules. Some are exaggerations of the truth and are meant to entertain later generations more than anything else. Some, though, serve to fill in the blanks, to answer those lingering questions or to explain the things we can’t wrap our minds around. Are there really fiery ghost ships and headless pirates haunting the Outer Banks? Was the word on the Cora tree, a word that you can still go see for yourself if you want, really carved into the bark by lightning? The chances are pretty good that it’s all just a collection of old, entertaining folktales, but some stories do both. Beneath their decorative paint and fantastical flourishes, they conceal a grain of truth deep in their core. The most famous local legend in the Outer Banks, by a mile, is the story of the lost colony of Roanoke. The island is located of the west coast of Hatteras island and, when the English settled there in 1585, they knew they were on the edge of the world. Building a settlement there took a lot of guts, but it came with a lot of risk and danger. When John White and a hundred new settlers landed in July of 1586, the first settlement was gone, so they stayed to investigate. They set up their own fort there, and also worked to establish relations with the local native American tribes: the Croatoan on what is now Hatteras and the Coree on the mainland. White left for England one year later to get supplies, but didn’t return for three years. When he did come back, no sign of the English could be found. He’d left them with a plan, though: if they were forced to leave, they’d been told to carve a cross into a nearby tree so White would know they’d been attacked, and he did find a carving, but it wasn’t a cross. It was a single word: Croatoan. This was good news because it meant they’d departed peacefully. White wanted to search Hatteras immediately, but when a terrible storm blew in, his men refused to stay. However painful it might have been – after all, White’s own granddaughter was among the missing – they left the very next day. It’s interesting to note that the Croatoan lived in southern Hatteras, in the area between modern day Buxton and Frisco, right by the Cora tree, and if it wasn’t really lightning that carved those letters, perhaps it was an actual human being. Sure, it could be nothing more than a centuries old prank or just a bit of lover’s graffiti, anything’s possible. Or maybe, like a myth with a grain of truth at its heart, this tree is the last hint in a chain of clues that point to the final destination of the settlers from Roanoke. You see, the Coree tribe on the mainland went by a few other names. Some called them the Cores, or the Coranine, or interestingly enough, the Cora.

Besides that’s not likely what it’s celebrating in any respect. It’s really memorializing what occurred afterwards, in these 50 intervening years.
It’s one of many biggest city renewal tales in U.S. historical past, and the creation of an thrilling, welcoming trendy metropolis that its residents might be pleased with, which I explored firsthand as a visitor of Vacation spot Cleveland.
It’s about how one metropolis’s instance helped a whole nation clear up its pure treasures, for generations like mine to take pleasure in. In case you’re a traveler based mostly within the States, and you like exploring America’s wild locations, you owe this metropolis numerous thanks. As my journey round Cleveland confirmed, it’s that necessary a narrative.
And above all, this story is about learn how to use your historical past, proudly and properly, to appropriate errors and make a greater future for everybody. Cleveland is celebrating how a lot it’s achieved to alter itself for the higher in that half-century—and as my journey confirmed me, the quantity it has modified is staggering.
Tumblr media
In case you knew what this metropolis was like 50 years in the past and also you noticed it at this time, you’d must pinch your self. You’d by no means have guessed Cleveland’s Cuyahoga river, as soon as the supply of town’s biggest disgrace, might in the future be voted River of the Yr, out of all of the waterways in the entire nation, by the American Rivers Conservation Affiliation. However that’s precisely what occurred this yr.
The standard better of town has by no means seemed higher, and the worst has gone without end.
Cleveland’s story of restoration, renewal and conservation is a narrative everybody must know—and all of it revolves round what occurred on that river on that one sizzling summer season day in 1969.
Right here’s how the entire story performed out.
From Common Metropolis on the River to “Mistake on the Lake”
The town will get its identify from Basic Moses Cleaveland, whose surveyors based the place in 1796. The “a” was dropped in 1931— allegedly as a result of an area newspaper couldn’t match “The Cleaveland Advertiser” on its masthead and wanted to save lots of house. The brand new identify caught.
On the time of Cleveland’s founding, Ohio nonetheless hadn’t formally been declared the 17th of the freshly-minted United States Of America. And, because of a collection of oversights, this finally needed to be achieved in 1953 (!), underneath the signature of President Eisenhower to retroactively admit Ohio into the Union.
In a sensible sense, nonetheless, Cleveland was instantly of important significance for the success of the brand new nation. At a time when water was the one technique to shift heavy items effectively, Cleveland had entry to the Nice Lakes, connecting routes east, west, north and south, and sparking a increase in native canal constructing and, later, railway observe laying.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
By the 20 century, Cleveland was each one in all America’s nice manufacturing cities and a extremely eye-catching place to discover, because of the 1920s structure that gave delivery to The Mall and the city-beautifying plan it was a part of.
Cleveland survived the pressures of mass-immigration; it survived the 1929 crash and the Melancholy; and it seemed to affirm its standing as one of many United States’ nice outdated cities.
Then it began falling aside.
The native economic system slowed down, employment turned precarious, there was little cash accessible to enhance town’s seems to be and all that trade began taking a horrible toll on the panorama, fouling the soil and town’s waterways with pollution of every kind.
On the morning of June 22nd, 1969, the unthinkable occurred.
The rubbish-covered river caught fireplace.
How one can Set a River on Fireplace
In case your response is “how on earth can a river catch fireplace?” you’re echoing the ideas of a complete nation.
The story ran in TIME journal on August 1st, 1969, and it sparked a nationwide outcry. It was the right instance of how far the nation’s environmental requirements had slipped. It was a supply of nationwide disgrace. It was an indication that one thing needed to be achieved.
So simply think about how Cleveland felt. Think about the embarrassment. Your metropolis’s river was so soiled with oil and particles that it caught fireplace? Oh man.
However Cleveland had already spent greater than a decade realizing it had an enormous drawback. The fireplace of 1969 was small compared to the one which roared down the Cuyahoga river in 1952. That one triggered over $1 million in injury, to boats, bridges, waterfronts—and town’s sense of civic satisfaction. There had additionally been different fires since then. A burning river in Cleveland definitely wasn’t a brand new factor.
The distinction in 1969 was that it turned nationwide information, partly because of the brand new metropolis mayor, Carl Stokes. He was pushing a $100-million cleanup program. And the 1969 fireplace was the right instance of why it was wanted.
He did his greatest to publicize the story, and regardless of little protection within the native media, it caught the eye of TIME journal, which was searching for a suitably dramatic story to launch its “Surroundings” part. It ran an article utilizing a photograph from the way more dramatic 1952 fireplace.
Instantly, Cleveland had one thing to say concerning the nation’s rivers as a complete.
How one can Clear up an Complete Nation
In 1969, the river was too polluted to carry a lot life, and a protracted stretch of it working into town middle was solely empty of fish. At the moment, over 60 species of fish swim alongside the Cuyahoga, and in March of this yr, they’re all suitable for eating—a direct results of that $100-million clean-up plan and the whole lot it had kickstarted.
In distinction, the federal funds for water high quality and air pollution management for the entire of the US in 1968 was simply $180 million. Cleveland turned the poster-boy for a way polluted cities might flip issues round, in the event that they acquired the proper of funding.
It sparked a nationwide renaissance in city river renewal. It led on to the passing of the 1972 Clear Water Act. And it turned a part of the stress put upon the federal government to create a company that would administer to the nation’s environmental issues, which turned the Environmental Safety Company, fashioned in 1970.
That’s Cleveland’s reward to the remainder of the nation. But it surely has had essentially the most affect at residence, as a result of at this time, Cleveland is secure, clear and completely attractive.
One of the best cause to go to Cleveland at this time isn’t to immerse your self in its historical past. It’s to take pleasure in what Cleveland has turn out to be—and see the way it used that historical past to encourage huge adjustments which have allowed it to redefine itself as one in all America’s biggest cities.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A Metropolis Redefined
Fifty years in the past, Downtown Cleveland was in noticeable decline. Large areas of town had been ghost cities, and its parks had been shabby and poorly saved. Heavy trade was collapsing in on itself, and the individuals counting on weak jobs had been taking a look at a bleak future.
(Plus, you understand, the river was on precise fireplace.)
However that dystopian future by no means got here.
Cleveland took a take a look at its downward trajectory and steered a brand new course, turning itself right into a poster-boy for city renewal and cutting-edge environmental reform.
The Cleveland of at this time is what occurs if you happen to begin caring about the place you reside. There’s masses to see and to discover, there’s wonderful meals, there’s a clear river teeming with fish and there’s an unlimited nationwide park to get your self misplaced in.
However to know trendy Cleveland, it’s a must to begin with the music.
Cleveland’s Music Scene Rocks Laborious
The Rock & Roll Corridor of Fame is the satisfaction and pleasure of Cleveland. You see, Cleveland was the place a number of the largest rock & roll stars of the 1960s and 1970s broke into the mainstream—and the place the time period “rock & roll” first got here into being, because of Cleveland DJ Alan Freed someday within the early 1950s.
The listing of musicians who launched their music careers in Cleveland is a who’s-who of all-time greats:
Bruce Springsteen
David Bowie
Roxy Music
Rush
Then there are the massive names really from Cleveland:
Tracy Chapman
the James Gang
Dean Martin
Chrissie Hynde and The Pretenders
Trent Reznor
9 Inch Nails…
Ohio has all the time been a fertile place for storage bands, heavy steel, punk, indie and energy pop. However Cleveland is the place newcomers discovered sufficient golf equipment hungry for brand new expertise to get their careers began. Musical entrepreneurship is baked into town’s social scene, and each membership appears to have a narrative about “that point [some famous musician] performed a gig right here.”
Even at this time, Cleveland is busily trying to find the subsequent huge breakout act in well-liked music—and reveals no indicators of slowing down.
So what higher place for a museum celebrating one of the best of rock?
We’ve Received the Music—Now The place’s the Beer?
With a love of music, inevitably, comes a love of excellent beer—and Cleveland’s craft beer scene isone of essentially the most thrilling within the nation. (It’s now fourth in GQ journal’s listing of the highest 5 beer cities in America.)
On reflection, it appears an inevitable path for town to go in. Take a considerably rundown metropolis within the late 1960s with uncared for areas crammed with derelict buildings, and add numerous beer-making visionaries to fill them up once more.
As town transformed empty factories and workplace areas into lofts, eating places and retail areas of every kind, two Irish brothers with restricted brewing expertise took an opportunity on a neighborhood in want of a facelift.
And Nice Lakes Brewing (2516 Market Avenue) was born in 1988.
At Collision Bend on the Cuyahoga river, named after the precision required by barge-pilots to barter a really sharp bend within the river, brew grasp Luke Purcell discovered a spot appropriate to start out a brand new form of brewery. Recent from success serving to launch Nice Lakes Brewing to nationwide fame, Purcell wished someplace with hanging decor and a surprising view of the river to go with handcrafted beer and regionally sourced dishes.
The end result was Collision Bend Brewery (1250 Previous River Rd) – and it’s by no means been so well-liked as it’s at this time. In 2018, Collision Bend was named one of the best brewpub within the nation, in USA At the moment‘s 10Greatest Readers Selection competitors.
The breweries are nonetheless arriving. Because the “brewery district” attracted experience to the area round Nice Lakes Brewing, new firms sprung as much as meet the demand. One was Market Backyard Brewery (3418, 1947 W 25th St.) which is making nice strides after increasing in 2016, with 12 varieties normally on faucet and, its later addition, a sister brewpub in Ohio Metropolis.
Additional afield, Hansa Import Home turned the house for Hansa Brewery.
Platform Brewery (Lorain and W 42st St.) opened in 2014, Brick & Barrel (Flats) arrived in 2015 and Forest Metropolis Brewery (Duck Island) opened in 2016.
All This Music and Beer Is Making Me Hungry
Based on TIME Journal, Cleveland is now America’s seventh greatest metropolis for meals—and it appears eager to rise even additional up the ranks in future. The meals scene is admittedly sizzling proper now, with bustling meals halls, stylish bars and road meals, in addition to award-winning worldwide delicacies on provide if you understand the place to look.
The Meals Community’s Michael Symon will get numerous credit score for kickstarting Cleveland’s meals scene, and yow will discover his Lola Bistro at 2058, East 4th Avenue. (Nonetheless, it’s normally as busy as you’d think about, so it’s greatest to name forward.)
Take an important meal of the day (it’s no good making an attempt to discover Cleveland on an empty abdomen). Of the handfuls of classy new fresh-food cafes to select from, REBOL (101 W Superior Ave) is on the high of the listing. It has nice breakfast choices with vegan, paleo, keto and gluten-free choices aplenty, with a pleasant line in refined-sugar-free dressings and superfood smoothies. It additionally serves nice espresso (I can suggest toxin-free Bulletproof or their very own in-house mix).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In case you can’t get your self there in time, Restore Chilly Pressed (1001 Huron Rd. E) is constructed round serving beautifully refreshing fruit and vegetable juices, freshly-prepared that morning or made to order as you wait—with vegan and keto/paleo-friendly gadgets accessible.
Lunch in Cleveland is a chance to relaxation your toes and lounge away the recent noonside hours with a very good view. If that’s what you’re after, TownHall (1909 W 25th St.) affords traditional American dishes with vegetarian, vegan and non-GMO choices. They’re delivered with a courtyard and plentiful indoor and out of doors seating for resting your aching toes after a tough morning of sightseeing.
Or possibly you simply need an indie rock & roll-style story to go, by which case, head to BEET JAR (1432 W. 29th St.), purveyors of natural juices and wholesome takeaway. BEET JAR boasts some of the delightfully scrappy back-stories you’ll hear in Cleveland’s meals scene:
“Throughout buildout, we paid a few of our building employees in home-cooked meals, like Pierogi and kale chips, since we didn’t have a lot of a funds. It’s no secret that Beet Jar practically didn’t occur due to our lack of funding. We took satisfaction in our wrestle and did what wanted to be achieved.”
For one thing a bit of totally different, Anna within the Uncooked (1360 East ninth Avenue within the IMG Constructing Foyer) advertises itself as promoting “the one chef-designed juice and uncooked line within the nation,” providing wholesome choices which were engineered for taste, not only for the healthiness of their elements (though that, too).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dinner at Spice Kitchen
And on the finish of the day, if you happen to can’t get your self a desk at Symon’s Lola Bistro, attempt Spice Kitchen & Bar, a classy and rustic American restaurant with seasonal, native elements and modern cocktails.
Or if you happen to’re feeling Italian, attempt Luca’s Italian (2100 Superior By way of), which has a deliciously European environment in a restaurant that serves essentially the most genuine of great-tasting Italian meals, with a spectacular view of Cleveland as a backdrop.
And, in fact, no journey to Cleveland is full with no cease at Mitchell’s Ice Cream!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Burn it off Open air…
Trekking within the Cuyahoga Nationwide Park
If adventuring via the Nice Open air is your factor—and I’m guessing it’s, if you happen to’re an everyday reader—this would be the spotlight of your journey.
Cleveland’s newly pristine surroundings is its satisfaction and pleasure, and the centerpoint of the 50th anniversary celebrations. There are occasions working all through 2019 (particulars right here). However the simplest way you’ll be able to see Cleveland’s pure bounty for your self is to get out of town, take the street in direction of Akron and maintain going till the whole lot turns unexpectedly, spectacularly inexperienced.
The Cuyahoga Valley Nationwide Park—the one nationwide park in Ohio, as from the yr 2000—is unfold over 33,000 acres between Cleveland and Akron. It borders the identical stretch of the Cuyahoga river that was once empty of fish within the 1960s.
These days, it’s a pure paradise—a spot of forest-covered hills, plunging ravines, sprawling wetlands, rivers and waterfalls.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
An early morning at Brandywine Falls in Cuyahoga Nationwide Park
There are over 125 miles of trails crisscrossing this panorama, with the 21 miles of the Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Path forming the primary thoroughfare for trekkers.
Brandywine Falls is probably its loveliest spot. And The Ledges, a path winding via million-year-old rock formations within the Virginia Kendall Park, is a soothing afternoon’s stroll (2.5 miles) that reveals you numerous the park’s pure magnificence with no need numerous effort.
Kayaking on the River
Given its historical past, it is sensible that one of the best view of lakeside Cleveland is from the water. There are many pleasure-boat rental choices accessible. However in order for you a extra adventurous afternoon on the waves, you actually need to get your self in a kayak.
It’s first come, first served at Nice Lakes Watersports, that means you’ll be able to’t e book forward. For that reason, I’d suggest dodging the crowds (and the warmth, if the solar’s out in full power) by turning up very first thing within the morning.
When you’re away, you have got the entire mouth of the river at your disposal, the place Cuyahoha meets the seemingly infinite expanse of Lake Erie—with one of the best view of Cleveland’s skyline as your backdrop.
A Metropolis Again From the Brink—and Higher Than Ever
There are many classes to be realized right here, not only for the remainder of the US, but additionally for our planet as a complete.
Horrifying environmental points? Okay. Then one thing have to be achieved—giving up is just not an choice, as a result of one thing can all the time be achieved. And Cleveland proves this.
Cleveland is a superb instance of how dedication and help can flip a metropolis round. It’s a metropolis again from the brink that’s, at this time, thriving in a method no person would have ever anticipated. And it has a extremely vivid future forward of it, too.
Briefly: It’s a metropolis that reveals what’s doable for any of our cities.
Thanks for choosing the proper future for your self, Cleveland. It’s one thing you’ll be able to actually be pleased with.

Nagasaki, Japan, is a cultural gem on the island of Kyushu.
With influences of Dutch and Portuguese culture from former inhabitation, as well as a strong Japanese heritage, Nagasaki has no shortage of history. Of course, Nagasaki also holds the difficult past of being nuclear bombed in WWII, and it has done an incredible job rebuilding and recovering from such a horrific event. Even if history isn’t your first choice when traveling, be sure to put some of these learning opportunities on your list, along with natural wonders, delicious eats, or a visit to an onsen (hot spring). You will love the rich and layered opportunities that Nagasaki has to offer. Read below and find out about the things to do in Nagasaki, Japan.
1. Experience a taste of the Netherlands at Huis Ten Bosch
You will not believe that you are in Japan when visiting Huis Ten Bosch, a theme park recreating Dutch architecture and culture. The original Huis Ten Bosch, or House in the Woods exists in The Hague, Netherlands, and is one of the official homes of the Dutch monarchs. Hence, this Huis Ten Bosch is meant to emulate a 17th-century Dutch village, complete with canals and historic sites. Enjoy live entertainment, shopping, and restaurants when visiting this unique recreation. A tulip festival in the spring and frequent fireworks cap off the spirit of the Dutch who once lived in Nagasaki.
2. Stay in European-style comfort at Hotel Okura JR Huis Ten Bosch
If you really adore Dutch culture, then stay a bit longer at Huis Ten Bosch’s hotel, Hotel Okura. Luxuriate in the comfort and cleanliness that Hotel Okura provides. Additionally, enjoy the unique opportunity to bathe in the on-site public onsen, a sure-fire way to feel the vacation vibes.
3. Explore the stunning Kujuku-Shima Island
Kujuku-Shima Island is a beautiful day trip from Nagasaki that should be on every traveler’s list. Kujuku-Shima literally translates to the 99 Islands although there are really more like 208 islands in this densely populated cluster of Japanese islands. Cruise around the islands, swim or watch dolphins; this is part of the Saikai National Park. Visiting Kujuku-Shima is best during the summer when the clear blue waters beckon and the islands feel subtropical. Check out the 50-minute Pearl Queen Cruise which offers visitors the opportunity to see uninhabited islands that are otherwise difficult to access, operating out of Kujukushima Pearl Sea Resort.
4. Tour the shrines and temples of beautiful Iki Island
The natural beauty and sandy beaches await you at Iki Island, off the coast of Kyushu. Accessible by ferry from Hakata Port, Iki Island holds a certain mystery, punctuated by the shrines and temples on the island. With 150 registered Shinto shrines, originating from the Nara period of Japan, there is no shortage of shrine-visiting to be had. Additionally, seven jizo or Buddhist stone statues, sit on the island, watching over the women and children. Lush and subtropical, the island is full of stunning topography. Be sure to add a visit to Monkey Rock while you are there, which is just as it sounds, and whose stone face is most picturesque during sunset.
5. Discover the tranquil coastlines of Fukue Island
Just so gorgeous, you will have your breath taken away by the beauty of Fukue Island’s coastline, the largest of the Goto Islands. Hilly terrain, churches and temples, as well as beautiful beaches, articulate just why Fukue Island is a must when visiting the Nagasaki region. Port of Fukue has the largest inhabitants in all of the Goto Islands, and it offers hotels, restaurants, and shops to explore. Historical sites from the Edo Period, as well as abundant natural resources, make time spent on Fukue Island relaxing and rejuvenating.
6. Tour the hidden Christian churches of Kashiragashima Island
Known as the Hidden Christian Sites of Nagasaki, and recognized by UNESCO for their historical value, these churches pay tribute to the lesser-known Christian history of Japan. A safe haven for religious persecution after Christianity was banned in the country, this island became the training ground for Catholic preachers. In 1910, this stone church was constructed, built by the devoted parishioners. Tour these still-used churches as you learn more about Japan’s spiritual past.
7. Venture into the Nanatsugama Limestone Caves
Just an hour outside Nagasaki by car, the Nanatsugama Limestone Caves are an unknown destination to most tourists. Tour the caves, expecting some tight spaces and slippery traction, with the walk taking about 20 minutes. A popular fishing destination surrounding the caves, this area is also home to a nearby shrine in tribute to Empress Jingu. You can also tour the caverns externally by way of boat, which can be arranged at Yokubu Port.
8. Discover a slice of Holland at Port Hoorn
If you didn’t get enough of Holland at Huis Ten Bosch, then head to Port Hoorn, Nagasaki’s second Dutch theme park. With a free entrance, it’s easy to get lured into the charm of Port Hoorn, home to 20 shops and restaurants, all Dutch-inspired. Drink a cup of strong espresso at Leo 8 Cafe, or head to the upcoming music event, Sakai Music Festival on September 22nd. This beautifully recreated town will leave you snapping selfies and feeling like you’ve traveled far and wide
9. Feed the capybaras at Nagasaki Bio Park
Though capybaras are native to South America, visiting Nagasaki Bio Park offers the unusual opportunity to see them up close and personal. With about 20 friendly capybaras that love to be scratched on their behinds (see the website for scratching tips), they are unique mammals rarely seen up-close. Each winter, the park puts on a seasonal event where the capybara go to an open-air bath; the animal equivalent to the Japanese onsen. Needless to say, these capybaras are living good.
10. Tour a closed coal mine on Ikeshima Island
Nagasaki sits on a bed of underwater coal that was tapped into when a coal mine opened in 1959. At one point, over 8,000 workers manned the mine which has since been closed. Tour the mine into caverns that once extracted coal, as well as the institutions such as the school that was built for the workers’ children. This is a great exploration of the area’s resources and past, one that is great for the young and old. The mine closed in 2001, and many of the tour guides are actual workers from the coal mine who hold an insider’s knowledge.

((Archie Universe lore galore!))
The Big Donut of Beach City is no more and has since been replaced by Bagel Barn. Some time in the mid-21st century, the Big Donut corporation faced some financial struggles and closed several smaller locations to make ends meet. They sold the locations, the one in Beach City being purchased by an aspiring bagel-making chain.
Fish Stew Pizza and Beach Citywalk Fries were and are local family companies, so they are still run by members of those families descended from the ones we know from the show. Beach Citywalk Fries, however, has grown to sell a wide variety of potato-based products, not just french fries and hash browns. Lars is, of course, still kicking and still running Galaxy Bakery. Pepe's Burgers opened a location within Beach City, which has since become its most popular one as more of the general public learned that the original composer of their catchy jingle settled down there in his lifetime.
Humanity as a whole had gradually shifted to greener energy sources over the time span between the 21st and 22nd centuries; in fact, fossil fuels are all but outlawed in most, but not all, countries. Basic AI exists, but you're not gonna be seeing robots walking around or anything like that. AI programming is, for the most part, only used by large companies, government organizations, and really wealthy people due to how expensive it is to produce. Rudimentary holographic technology also exists, but this is also very expensive to produce, and most people can only afford fairly small hologram projectors. Hard light projections, for the time being, is still something only Gems know how to do.
Speaking of, Gemkind had become more acknowledged by governments has Gems overtime got more actively involved with humanity. The Crystal Gems' efforts to protect humanity are formally recognized and appreciated, and most government bodies assign liaisons to maintain a healthy relationship and ensure that the Crystal Gems always have their people's best interests at heart. Humans who regularly interact with Gems have access to software for smartphones and other devices capable of producing frequencies that activate warp streams to wherever the user wants to go. Warp Whistles are totally obsolete now, but that's not to say there aren't still a few lying around here and there.
The Beach House is currently looked after by Archie's eldest cousin and is occasionally something of a tour spot. Of course, the temple foyer just beyond the living room is off-limits to the public. Once Archie formally started learning to use his Gem powers, he would occasionally stay over for a night or two, most often during summer vacation.
Archie doesn’t interact with most of Gemkind on his own all that often, and most don’t quite understand what happened to Steven, the human/Pink Diamond hybrid that began Era 3, or how there’s an entirely different human/Pink Diamond hybrid now. Archie does, however, enjoy accompanying a Crystal Gem or two during visits to one of the many Gem-populated planets, most of which have been restored thanks to a plan enacted by Steven himself with the Diamonds’ help, for a taste for the different interplanetary locales.
The Diamonds occasionally interact with Archie, but the Crystal Gems insist on having at least one of their own--usually Pearl--accompany to watch his back. The Diamonds are still in denial that this isn’t just “Steven with amnesia”, just as they had initially been in denial of Steven not being just “Pink with amnesia”, but they respect his wishes to be treated “like another person” and call him by his name. They occasionally invite him to join them in the pool or extraction chamber to unwind, which Archie actually finds quite relaxing--even after he realized they were bringing him there mainly to harvest his sweat, which is kinda gross, but oh well.
Steven was very old by the time he died, and he could feel when his days were numbered.  But he kept in good spirits, offering parting advice to his descendants and his Gem family and looking back fondly upon all he had accomplished in life. Sometime earlier, while pondering his own mortality, he considered some form of rebirth/reincarnation as a possibility of what would happen to the unprecedented hybrid, and he half-jokingly said that if that’s what happened, he wanted his new name to be Archimicarus Gregory Universe. When this actually turned out to be what happened, some remembered what he said and decided to honor his (if somewhat humorous) request.
After Steven died and Archie was “born”, there was a big and lovely public funeral proceeding held for the former while his human and Gem families tried to figure out what just happened that led to the latter. Isabelle stepped in to take Archie in, because she was a Steven descendant of proper age to be a parent while not having any kids of her own already. Lion became incredibly reclusive, to the point where Archie never even met him until he was 13 when Lion finally approached and initially startled the poor kid. By that point of time, Lion has been starting to actually look a little old, but he will still live for a fair number more years.
Archie dying would result in another “biological reset” like the one that created him in the first place, but only if body and gem are intact with one another upon death. Kind of like if the Avatar of the Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise were to die while in the Avatar State, a Pink Diamond hybrid dying while their human and gem halves are separated would break the cycle.

We seen Sal, among the selection of islands off the shore of West Africa, where you are able to spot lemon creatures, float in a salt lagoon and find colourful villages. Strong breezes imply that temperatures stay during the summer around the high 20s and the sea is better for paddling also, and there are a number of lovely resorts right on the beach, with pools and children clubs, such as Melia Dunas where we remained. Among the most relaxing vacations I have taken!’

It’s in fact the rainy season on the West Coast (not that we saw any rain), but it’s the ideal season for the stunningly pristine beaches of the East Coast and hiking in the Central Highlands. Sri Lanka is super kid-friendly — children will love eating the hoppers (somewhat similar to a pancake in the shape of a flying saucer) and there are mountains where even small legs can reach the summit (our 2yo caused it into the very top of Little Adam’s Peak!)’
Cambodia
Helen Wills, ” Really Mummy, says: ‘I would definitely recommend Cambodia for a family trip this summer — it’s just this eye opening experience for a household to find together. We learned so much!’
USA
Daisy of all Dais Like These says: I would recommend the North Fork of Long Island, USA, as a dazzling destination for a summer vacation, notably the town of Greenport. The combination of fab pubs, bars and restaurants, vineyards that are stunning, close empty beaches and great weather make it a truely lovely place to head during the summertime.’
