bringing your target language into your daily life is easily the best thing you can do for yourself as a language learner. writing your to-do lists in your target language, setting the phone language to your target language, cooking from recipes in your target language, etc. et.

9 January 2024 -
I met and fell in love with someone that speaks Dutch... I've been studying myself feral ever since.
Found a cute little shop in my hometown that sold Dutch treats and gushed for an embarrassingly long time.
Anyone wanna be friends on Duolingo? 🥺 (link in reply!)

My mother studied what was at the time known as Germanic languages and has since been rebranded to language & literature studies which basically means she has a library about three times the size of mine (especially since she, unlike me, is unable to get rid of books) and of course I deeply enjoy perusing said library and found her school copy of Gawain & the green knight full of her notes. Very cool shit.

november language goals 🩷
this will be my first language learning goals post since i started this blog! ♡
my current languages:
french (A2)
dutch (A1)
a lil life update, i finished my masters in the uk and moved back home to germany this month. i also spent my birthday (17/10) in paris, soon after i arrived back home. while being here, i haven’t done any intense revision other than keeping my streak on the language learning apps that i use. i do have a lot more free time now since i’m currently not working and i’m also done with uni, so i would need to amend and try my best to somewhat stick to my schedule.
here are my november language learning goals ♡:
maintain a 30 days duolingo, busuu & falou streak
write a digital journal entry (notion) about my birthday trip in both french & dutch
work through ‘Niederländisch Wort für Wort’ to and incl. chapter ‘Dieses & Jenes’
finish ‘UNIT ONE: Verbs and pronouns’ in ‘Basic Dutch’
write down all dutch vocabularies up to and incl. the numbers on digital dialects (website)
finish chapter 2 in ‘Dirty French’
write down all french vocabularies up to and incl. the numbers on digital dialects (website)
finish ‘The definite article’ in ‘Modern French Grammar’
write my first entry in my workbook about basic information about myself in both french & dutch
watch 5 easyfrech & easydutch youtube videos
this doesn’t seem like a lot for a whole month but considering i haven’t done much in october, this is a good start to get back into the habit of language learning.
not sure if i will be updating every week or bi-weekly, but i think bi-weekly will be more realistic! 🤍
i do plan on going back to the uk for a few days in november and soon after travel to nigeria for about a month towards the end of this month, so i need to see how i organise my time. good thing is that i mainly use notion and e-books for my revision so i don’t need to carry any (heavy) textbooks with me. let’s see how it goes.
happy halloween & until next time,
mars the prinzess xx

October 26th. Woke up to a misty morning. Biked to the library and put five lessons of grammar into my Notion database today. I'm slowely getting into a routine and I'm very proud of myself. Goals for next week are to finish up to lesson 40 of grammar, find ways to study vocabulary daily and find music and a tv show to watch in Spanish to practice listening.

Good morning everyone!
This week was so far a week of reading for my courses. I managed to get through Dubliners by James Joyce, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen as well as Hard Times by Charles Dickens. I must say I adored Joyce and Austen was less bad than I thought it was going to be! Now I only have To the Lighthouse left by Virginia Woolf for this week!

if you don't want to chat up some people with your target language as their mother tongue (i get it can seem intimidating sometimes) literally The Best Thing You Can Do For Yourself is get a chatbot and tell it to speak to you in very simple language in your target language.

I thank Duolingo for constantly harassing me to take my Dutch lessons. I couldn’t have done it without you.

study wrap up | 22/08/23
today we started with a bit of dutch for a change. I'm pretty confident going into this language because of its closeness to english, but I think my biggest issue will be the pronunciations - remembering to pronounce w's with a v sound, and j's with a y sound.
it's very exciting to start a new language with an adult brain. i began french before i was a teenager and half-assed it throughout my teen years. so hopefully this will stick.
for this dutch session, I've just stuck to my duolingo course. i don't really have any plans on expanding my learning resources just yet, i personally like duolingo. it's fun, and learning is a journey not a destination so I'm going to keep at that.
for french practice today, we also completed one new story and one unit on duolingo, followed by 30 rounds of clozemaster. i also found this website called The French Experiment, where they have children's stories all written, recorded and translated in french. i have started copying petit poulet into my language journal. it's helping me find the gaps in my knowledge so far!
