Gegege no Kitarou (c) Shigeru Mizuki/Kodansha/Toei Animation
Since Medama-Oyaji is a soul transferred to an eyeball, Kitaro might feel touch starved at times, not because his father do not care, but because he can't truly do anything more due to his current state.
At times like this, Kitaro misses his adoptive father the most.

An adoptable I got a while back from Funkiesoda on DA, (top left image is theirs) I reaally liked this one (I am biased towards simpler but striking designs it seems) but couldn't think of a good way to portray him... but I think I really landed on something with "a little bit of a spooky vibe like gegege no kitarou." Wanna keep working on him more. Maybe I will name him Saro! (sounds like sorrow? Because the tears?? idk)

Inktober 12: Kitarou and Nezumi Otoko (and also Medama-oyaji)
I wanted to use a brush pen and try some yokai work. I feel like the manga was done in brush pen but I’m not completely sure.

I know... I know I'm jumping on the meme redraw bandwagon but when I draw crossover of any series with The Witcher you know I'm in too deep in a hyperfixation.
Also... "Gegege no Kitaro" by Shigeru Mizuki basically reshaped the view on Yokai for Japanese audiences in '60 XX, while "The Witcher" by Andrzej Sapkowski changed the view on slavic folklore for Polish people in '90 XX. so it's inevitable for SOMEONE to put Geralt and Kitaro together in one drawing. It might as well be me.
it might sound far-fetched but... Kitaro and Geralt are more similar than you might think!
They are both considered "outsiders" - Geralt is a witcher, mutated human who's sole purpose is to kill monsters for the right price - he is no longer considered a human being and often considered a monster himself by people who he is suppose to protect. Since he was created to kill monsters, or what humans consider to be monstrous, he is not accepted by any side of the human-non-human conflict. Kitaro is a Yokai (a term used to describe Japanese monsters) who is a human-yokai negotiator. Yokai thinks he is on humanity side, while humans thinks he sides with the monsters.
They are both long-living. Geralt, due to his mutations, is around 100+ in the book series. Kitaro, due to him being a monster, is 50+ but mentally he is a teenager.
They are both considered "ugly". In "The Witcher" books, Geralt's appearance is often described as uncanny thus people are often spooked by his inhuman look (it was later nullified by 3rd "The Witcher" game and, especially, Netflix series - in those he is gruff but good looking). In "Gegege no Kitaro" manga Kitaro is often described as a "creepy kid" and the title of the franchise is sometimes translated to "Spooky Kitaro" or "Kitaro of the graveyard". In newest version of the anime Kitaro doesn't look grotesque but in early manga and in Hakaba anime from 2007, Kitaro ain't the prettiest.
Both Geralt and Kitaro have "magical abilities" and "magical equipment" to deal with monsters.
Geralt has witcher medallion which vibrate when monsters are nearby (I'm sure, Geralt's medallion would activate when in close proximity to Kitaro), Kitaro hair stands up when he is close to a monster activity, warning him about the monsters beforehand.
Geralt has witcher signs (a set of basic magical spells) which can create: fire (Igni), entrapment (Yrden), waves of energy (Aard), energy shield (Quen), calm animals or bend other people's will (Axii) etc. while Kitaro can generate electricity and use his hair as spikes or fingers as a spiritual gun among other abilities.
As every witcher, Geralt have two swords - silver and steel - as well as potions that enhance his abilities. Kitaro have a chanchanko vest made of spiritual hair of his ancestors and wooden getas those are basically multiools during his encounters with monsters.
2018 anime (AKA 6th series) is closer in philosophy to "The Witcher" depiction of morality - in "The Witcher" it's often noted that the most monstrous of being are humans. Their despicable actions often leaving Geralt more and more disgusted with humanity.
The same sentiment can be seen in 2018 anime, but to a lesser extend. The 2018 anime mostly follows the tried and true "monster of the week + moral at the end of the episode" formula. However, sometimes an episode ends with characters not learning their lesson or learning that their behavior is abhorrent but going back to their old ways anyway. Since Kitaro's view on humanity is already very fragile in the 6th series, he is left more and more heartbroken seeing how futile his actions are.
Well... that's the gist of it.
If you're interested either of the series, know that "The Witcher" books are intended for more mature audiences while "GeGeGe No Kitaro" is a shounen manga.

What anime from this season have you started watching?
SO……
Gegege no Kitarou (2018)  Cute spooky childrens show
Kakuriyo no Yadomeshi  “Female college student Aoi inherited her deceased grandfather’s ability to see ayakashi. One day, while Aoi is feeding some ayakashi, a demon appears! He declares that Aoi’s grandfather owed a great debt, and as compensation, Aoi must marry the demon! Aoi refuses, and decides to pay off the debt by working.”
I skipped this at first because I was confident that it was just Fujoshi bait. Until I noticed that it has no romance tag and is approved for 26 episodes. So we will see how it turns out
Tada-kun wa Koi wo Shinai “In the story, Mitsuyoshi Tada, a boy who has never known love, is taking pictures of the cherry blossoms in full bloom when he meets Teresa Wagner, a transfer student from Luxembourg. Upon arriving in Japan, she got lost, separated from her travel companion. Mitsuyoshi helps her and brings her to his grandfather’s coffee shop.”
Enjoying this one a lot, cute characters, good jokes. Overall a good feel
Hinamatsuri “One night, a strange object falls on the head of Nitta, a member of the yakuza. Inside the box is a strange young girl named Hina. She has tremendous supernatural powers, and Nitta finds himself reluctantly taking her in. Her powers can come in handy for his yakuza business, but he also runs the risk of her using them on him! Not to mention, if she doesn’t use her powers, she will eventually go berserk and destroy everything around her. Nitta and Hina’s strange life together is just beginning…”
This is a must watch if you enjoy the comedy genre, Hina and Nitta are amazing main characters but the side characters are somehow just as engaging and could honestly all have their own successful spin-offs
Megalo Box  “To be quiet and do as you’re told, that’s the cowardly choice.” These are the words of Junk Dog, an underground fighter of Megalo Box, an evolution of boxing that utilizes mechanical limbs known as Gear to enhance the speed and power of its users. Despite the young man’s brimming potential as a boxer, the illegal nature of his participation forces him to make a living off of throwing matches as dictated by his boss Gansaku Nanbu. However, this all changes when the Megalo Box champion Yuuri enters his shabby ring under the guise of just another challenger. Taken out in a single round, Junk Dog is left with a challenge: “If you’re serious about fighting me again, then fight your way up to me and my ring.”Filled with overwhelming excitement and backed by the criminal syndicate responsible for his thrown matches, Junk Dog enters Megalonia: a world-spanning tournament that will decide the strongest Megalo Boxer of them all. Having no name of his own, he takes on the moniker of “Joe” as he begins his climb from the very bottom of the ranked list of fighters. With only three months left to qualify, Joe must face off against opponents the likes of which he has never fought in order to meet the challenge of his rival.
If youre old like me and miss the way anime looked in the 90′s youre gonna love this one. Any sport anime fan will love one
Boku no Hero Academia 3rd Season I mean yeah
Shokugeki no Souma: San no Sara - Toutsuki Ressha-hen SHOKUGEKI IS BACK BABY
Wotaku ni Koi wa Muzukashii  “After discovering that they work at the same company, a gaming crazed otaku and a fujoshi reunite for the first time since middle school. After some post-work drinking sessions they begin dating, but will it be a perfect relationship for the two?“
I think this is the first time their have been endearing and likable “Otaku” characters in a romance anime (in my opinion). Very sweet and funny show, makes me smile a lot
Hisone to Maso-tan  Straightforward and innocent Hisone Amakasu is a Self-Defense Force rookie stationed at the Air Self-Defense Force’s Gifu Base. She was struggling with the fact that she sometimes hurts people unintentionally by her innocent words and decided to join the Air Self-Defense Force, hoping to maintain a certain distance from people. This decision led her to a fateful encounter which profoundly changed her life. It was the “OTF” dragon hidden in the base and it chose Hisone as his pilot. When it soared into the sky with Hisone, her fate as a dragon pilot was decided. It is said that dragons have a key to the future of the world…
I think everyone should give Hisomaso a try, great interesting characters and fun visuals. I really think their is something here for everyone to enjoy.
THATS IT

Gegege no Kitaro (”gegege” is a cackling onomatopoeia, so Kitarou’s Cackling), which was originally called Hakaba no Kitarou (or Kitarou’s Graveyard).  This spooky 60′s anime by Shigeru Mizuki has a cult-like following for it’s wonderful yokai (supernatural monsters, spirits and demons in Japanese folklore).

also as we're at the topic of food. I have headcanon of sort... which is under the cut/read more...
So that's a given that yokai have a vastly different diets than humans.
In GGGNK manga/Hakaba TV series Iwako, Kitaro's mother, served Mizuki (FRESH!) frogs eyeballs for dinner, not to mention some Yokai eat humans or feed off of their energy.
However in the franchise Kitaro, Nezumi-Otoko, Medama-Oyaji and few other yokai are shown to eat human food - various fruits, ramen noodles, alcohol, ice-cream, cookies, etc.
I can understand Nezumi-Otoko's need for human food - he is a half-Yokai after all - so maybe NEEDS it, due to his genetics, to survive?
However Kitaro is fully Yokai... so what if he... just enjoys normal dishes because he was brought up by a human, who fed him as he would a normal child? so, sure, Kitaro would eat a rat or a plate of freshly plucked frogs eyeballs and enjoy it too but... hotcakes? ramen? hamburger steak? cookies? that's how nostalgia taste like for him.
Just a food for thought...

I have a headcanon-y theory which won't leave my brain alone, so I'm gonna share it... under the cut/read more!
With each new anime, Kitaro looks more and more like he could easier blend in with the crowd - especially in the 2018 series.
2018 anime (and 2023 Akuma-kun's cameo) heavily implies that Kitaro and Mizuki had the strongest father-son bond in comparison to previous iterations of their relationship in the franchise.
So what if, since Mizuki treatment of Kitaro was much warmer in 2018 version, the yokai boy... just looks better because of how much the man was involved in his early life?
Imagine Mizuki going to endless dentist appointments with his adoptive son to get Kitaro's teeth fixed early on (and fixing one's teeth can correct the whole jaw, so by extension change the shape of the face), go to various doctors to correct his posture or combing his hair sideways to cover Kitaro's missing eye so people wouldn't get spooked by just by glancing at him (I wonder if there were every talks about getting him a glass eye?).
Also... When Kitaro was a child the chanchanko vest was definitely his comfort object/blanket. Mizuki didn't know where it came from, but if that got the kid to the dentist office without a fuss, he won't question it.

Mizuki didn't know there would be a time in his life he would impatiently wait to the end of his shift, especially during holidays.
