PERSEPHONE

WHO IS SHE?

Persephone, also known as Kore (meaning "young woman” or “girl" in Greek), is one of the main deities from Greek mythology. She is the daughter of Zeus and Demeter, the Goddess of the Harvest. She is also the wife of Hades, the God of the Underworld, and she is associated with spring, fertility, and rebirth.

BASIC INFO:

Appearance: Persephone is typically depicted as a young and beautiful woman, with long, dark hair and eyes. She is often shown wearing a white dress or robe, and she is usually associated with flowers, especially flowering plants that bloom in the spring. She is also often associated with pomegranates, which symbolized her wedding to Hades, and which she ate while she was in the Underworld.

Personality: Persephone is usually depicted as kind, gentle, and compassionate. She is often seen as a mediator and peacemaker, and a defender of the innocent and vulnerable. She is also often portrayed as a motherly figure who is caring and nurturing. She is also sometimes seen as defiant and rebellious, and she is known to have a more powerful side that can punish those who defy her.

• Water: she is associated with water for a couple of reasons. First, she is the Goddess of spring, and water is a vital factor for life and growth. Water is necessary for flowering bloom and green plants, so it is closely associated with the growth and renewal associated with spring. Second, water is also a symbol of rebirth and renewal, as it is a fluid element that is constantly changing and transforming. This fits well with Persephone's role as an Underworld Goddess and her connection with the cycle of life and death, as death and rebirth are represented as a transformation process.

• Gold: the Underworld is associated with riches and treasures that are commonly represented in the form of gold. This connection to riches represents the fact that the Underworld was a place of great wealth and abundance, and it represents the treasures that were found there, such as gold, jewels, and precious metals. This is another aspect of Persephone's connection to the Underworld and her role as a divinity of death and rebirth.

• Trees: they represent the natural cycle of life and death, as they grow and flourish during the warm months, then shed their leaves during the winter months, before starting the cycle all over again. Trees are also associated with fertility and rebirth, as they produce seeds and fruit that propagate new life. This ties in with Persephone's role as a Goddess of spring, and her connection with the Underworld and the cycles of nature.

FACTS ABOUT PERSEPHONE:

* She takes her role in the Underworld seriously.

* Her epithets included but were not limited to: Despoina (The Mistress), Melindia (Honey), Aristi Cthonia (Best Cthonic), and Kore (The Maiden).

* Unlike Hera and Amphitrite, Persephone didn’t have a husband that constantly cheated on her (she was married to Hades). However, there is a myth about her cheating on Hades with Adonis, depending on the version. As far as I know, Hades did nothing about the matter. I think that implies it didn’t count as cheating to him, or maybe Persephone only loved Adonis as her son, which makes sense to me since she raised him. But yes, it’s perfectly acceptable and legitimate to say she cheated on Hades.

• Persephone is often called a spring or vegetation Goddess but all that seems to mainly be related to Demeter, her mother, when it’s time for Persephone to return her. Truly incidental. Persephone was much more an Underworld Goddess than a flowery Goddess.

• There’s evidence to suggest that, as far as religious history goes, Persephone as a character in religion is older than Hades, and was an underworld deity too.

• Some sources suggest Persephone was the mother of Dionysus, but to be fair Dionysus has a bajillion origin stories.

• As far as I know, and correct me if I’m wrong, it wasn’t too popular to depict Persephone with red hair colours until the Victorian era, when a popular red-headed model was used for a famous painting of Proserpina (the Roman equivalent to Persephone). Before, she had occasionally been depicted with red hair, but black and blonde were just as popular. Nowadays, in media, she’s often portrayed as red or pink haired, although even that trend is dying again.

• Some people like to think Persephone was a minor or weak Goddess. That was simply not true. She was considered frightening in her own right.

• Someone tried to kidnap her right from the Underworld. Hades had him attached to a chair for eternity.

HOW TO WORSHIP PERSEPHONE:

Setting up an altar or sacred space dedicated to her is a crucial part of the worship process. Offerings such as candles, flowers, and other symbolic items are also essential to respectfully honouring her. Prayers and incantations can be said to her to ask for guidance, support, and her blessings. Meditation and visualization can be used to feel Persephone's presence and connect with her energy. Feast days and holidays can also be celebrated to honour her.

HOW TO PRAY TO PERSEPHONE:

To begin, you can address her by name and say something like:

“Lady Persephone, Goddess of the Underworld. I come before you in humility, I seek to find peace and healing to shed myself of pain and strife. I ask for your guidance and strength in my time of need to weather through the storms of life.”

 “Thank you for your love and kindness. Please open my path to the light and give me the strength to continue to walk down this path. May we all find peace and healing, in the realm of both life and death. Hail Lady Persephone.”

WHAT ARE SIGNS THAT PERSEPHONE WANTS ME TO WORK WITH HER?

If your request to work with Persephone has been accepted, here are some signs that you can look for:

• A sense of calmness or peace around you.

• Feeling connected to nature and the changing of seasons.

• Attracting more birds or other doves.

• Seeing or smelling flowers in unexpected places.

• Having vivid dreams about death and rebirth.

• Experiencing a sudden increase in energy and motivation.

• Feeling connected to the Underworld and the realm of death.

• Having a deep feeling of contentment and acceptance within yourself.

If your request to work with Persephone has not been accepted, you may notice the following signs:

• Feeling anxious or uneasy.

• A feeling of being disconnected from nature and the changing of seasons.

• Having vivid, unpleasant and disturbing dreams.

• Experiencing a decrease in energy and motivation.

• Feeling a sense of unease or uneasiness around you.

• Feeling disconnected from the Underworld and the realm of death.

• Experiencing a sense of unease or tension within yourself.

Overall you need to be respectful of deities denying your request.

DEVOTIONAL ACTS FOR PERSEPHONE:

• Stop to smell flowers.

• Pair lace and leather together, she loves this.

• Singing.

• Plant flowers.

• Wear pomegranate scented things--perfume, lotion, lip gloss, etc.

• Tend to wild plants if they need care.

• Go barefoot more often and feel the way the ground feels on your bare feet.

• Honour the dead.

• Support local farmers and beekeepers.

• Honour the deaths of animals and if you can, bury them or leave them in a place where nature will care for them.

• Buy yourself a nice bouquet of flowers, or make your own.

• Place flowers on barren graves.

• Spread seeds of native flowers on the sides of highways or other unincorporated places (be sure to check local laws on this).

• Wear something fancy when you feel like it, make yourself feel like the royalty you are.

• Offer her fruits/nuts.

• Listen to music that reminds you of her.

• Wear a flower crown.

• Collect crystals like rose quartz, garnet, citrine, green tourmaline, and topaz.

• Rose quartz is a go-to stone for me for many Gods, Persephone being one of the many.

• She really digs topaz and the tourmaline in my experience.

• Love yourself, of course, just as she loves you.

IS IT SAFE TO EAT OR DRINK AN OFFERING I GIVE TO HER?

It's generally not considered safe to consume food and drink offerings that you give to Persephone because of her connection with the underworld and the realm of death. While food and drink offerings are traditionally given to the gods as a gesture of thanks and respect, in the case of Persephone, these offerings are associated with the underworld and the cycle of life and death. Consuming such offerings represents an immersion in the underworld and could lead to negative consequences. It should also be noted that Persephone is a deity of death, and consuming offerings meant for her may be seen as a disrespect to her position.

→ except you were different than what they thought. Steve was wary, Nancy thought you were crazy, Robin was intrigued by you, but Eddie ... Eddie thought you were really cool

→ if you were high school age than other people would’ve made fun of you (i mean if you were open about being a witch)

→ but they only made fun of you because they didn’t understand and were actually scared. it doesn’t make it any better though.

↳ you would have made friends with dustin first, it would be in the afternoon outside school and you saw him looking down. without thinking you walked over and wordlessly gave him your clear quartz and walked away

→ if you’re older (early 20s) than Robin would have seen you at the park (or beach, or woods wherever you like to do outside rituals) and her curiousity got the better of her.

Winter Solstice for a Modern Witch

This is the second part of my winter solstice post. This post will focus on more personal or UPG-based content rather than historical accuracy, though there will be some of that too!

Modern Winter Solstice

The winter solstice may be the shortest day of the year, but after it passes we see the days begin to get longer again. Throughout history and even now there have been many myths and celebrations associated with the solstice. Some festivals were in honor of gods, and others paid respects to the sun itself, either way, we can learn from the past to find ways to celebrate the solstice in the modern day!*

Festivities and Celebrations

Feasts

Bonfires

Play in the snow

Bake or cook a sharable amount of food in honor of the giving season

Kiss under the mistletoe

Practice divination, whichever form suits your fancy

Hold or attend a get-together

Give gifts! This is something done in different cultures around this time of year and can easily be incorporated into your celebration.

Make wreaths either out of real or faux plants

Correspondences

All of these are optional and not all of them are going to be applicable. Take what you will and leave what you please~

Deities and Divinities

Boreas, Cailleach, Despoina, Marzanna, Morozko, Khione, Kuraokami, Skaði, the Great Winter God (冬大神), Tengliu, and more winter related deities.

Spirits

Make sure that if you’re using real plants that you keep them away from kids and pets or you can opt for the faux versions.

Clear quartz, Aventurine, Amazonite, Moonstone and others related to new beginnings as the solstice is close to the new year and marks a new season.

Offerings or Devotional Acts

Deep clean your space - not just spiritually but physically! We spend a lot more time indoors during the winter season, so you want to make sure it’s a good experience.

A plate at the table - it’s a common practice across many cultures to lay a plate out for deities or spirits.

Pray - pray to the relevant winter spirit or deity in your faith or religion.

Bring greenery indoors - this could be a Christmas tree, but you could also get some houseplants or create wreaths of festive plants and offer them to your relevant deities or spirts.

Decorate your altar with seasonal items

Burn a Yule log

Alcohol - I’m partial to mulled wine this time of year but you could also do a mulled cider or a wassail (thanks @ breelandwalker for the recipes!)

Make donations to charities and organizations or just donate to those in need.

Make oaths similar to how one would on New Year - this time of year was seen as the beginning of a new year to some, or it came close as it does in the Gregorian calendar. During the Nordic Yule oaths were made (often followed by drinking!) during festivities.

I just thought of a question about steven universe and fusions. Ok so Rebecca sugar has said that all fusions have a single gem equivalent, I don’t remember where she has said this though, and this is something we see in the show (kind of). We see the gems fuse into obsidian and in Steven universes future we snowflake obsidian. Plus when blue diamond is talking to Steven about the party and Steven mentions Garnet blue says “does that call herself a garnet? What would you have her do enter with the Demantoids? The Hessonites, the Pyropes?” All of which are types of garnet.

So my question is could their be a fusion that’s a diamond? I don’t mean a fusion between 2 of the diamonds but a fusion between non diamonds that ends up being a diamond.

Crystals: they taste good. Especially when used in magic. CRUMCH.

So do rocks. So do minerals. Just so deliciously spiritual. Y'know?

But they don't all taste good on your soul in the same way, because these words don't mean the same thing. GEM and STONE and CRYSTAL aren't synonyms, though their definitions sometimes overlap. In a casual setting it's fine to fart these words around interchangeably. I just wouldn't do it in any serious capacity.

To start getting into these lovely crunchy snacks, dear humans, you're going to have to know at least a little of the science. And if you're groaning right now, you're not ready to be a practitioner of any ding-dang metaphysical thing. You have to understand a touch of the natural world before working with it.

For instance: if you need fiery passion in your life, are you going to use something in your spell that comes out of a mollusk (a pearl) or from a volcano (obsidian)? If you need structure, is it better to use an object that's chemically a blobby mess (an opal) or orderly and neat (quartz)?

Unless you have prior associations with these objects, the basic science is all very crucial.

Still, I'm not gonna bore you. Let me just lay on you what you need to know to start with. You can go scurry off and read more as you please.

🔮 WHAT IS A CRYSTAL?

A crystal is a homogeneous solid substance with a repeating symmetrical structure. This structure is called a crystal lattice.

What the hickety heck does that mean? Basically:

A crystal is a solid. OK.

Its internal chemical or molecular structure is homogeneous. All its parts are the same.

Its internal chemical or molecular structure is symmetrical, meaning its parts, on an axis, are the same. Mirrored. Think a butterfly, a snowflake, etc.

Its internal chemical structure also repeats. So you have the same chemicals or molecules repeating.

Its internal chemical structure is called a crystal lattice.

SALT is a crystal. It looks like this, way down on a teeny-weeny level:

🔮 WHAT IS A MINERAL (AND MINERALOID)?

A mineral is a naturally occurring, inorganic crystal. That means that minerals must be formed by nature, from nonliving sources, and exhibit homogeneous compositions and symmetrically repetitive structures.

Let's break this down again.

A mineral is naturally occurring, which means it forms in nature.

But it's also inorganic. Animals don't make them. Plants don't make them. Things that are alive can't make them. It's gotta come from the earth. (Which is alive in a spiritual sense but not in a scientific sense. It's not, like, an organism. You know what I mean?)

They have homogeneous compositions. This means they're made up of the same thing throughout their entire structure.

They also have symmetrically repetitive structures. Their composite parts mirror on an axis, again like a snowflake, and the patterns of their molecules, elements etc repeat.

Labradorite is a mineral. It comes out of igneous (magma-formed) rock and it has a repeating chemical mixture of oxygen, silicon, aluminum, calcium, and sodium.

🐻 On the other paw...

When a substance meets some, but not all, of the criteria of a mineral...it is called a mineraloid.

If you have yourself a substance that's real close to a MINERAL but doesn't check off all the boxes, it's a mineraloid.

Obsidian is a mineraloid. It comes from lava, so it's non-organic. But its structure is amorphous, meaning it's not arranged in a crystal lattice.

🐻 So: a MINERAL is a CRYSTAL. A MINERALOID is generally not a CRYSTAL.

🔮 WHAT IS A ROCK?

This one's so easy I don't have to pull out a book for it: basically, a ROCK is made up of one or more MINERALS or MINERALOIDS.

Marble is a rock. It's composed of the MINERALS calcite and/or dolomite.

Limestone is a rock. Its parents are (generally) the MINERALS calcite and/or aragonite. I'm sure they're proud.

🔮 WHAT IS A STONE?

Not an official scientific term, as far as I know. This is one that's gonna vary depending on your dialect, your background, etc. I use STONE as a synonym for ROCK, but wouldn't use it for just any old MINERAL or MINERALOID. (Like, a piece of obsidian is not always a STONE to me.)

Your mileage may vary.

🔮 WHAT IS A GEMSTONE?

Also not an official scientific term, as far as I know. Like STONE, this will vary based on your background, dialect, etc. Generally, GEMSTONE refers to any MINERAL, MINERALOID, or ROCK that you humans have used to decorate yourselves over the years. Think jade (ROCK) or ruby (MINERAL) or opals (MINERALOID).

🔮 OTHER CONSIDERATIONS

There's way more scientific rocky rockiness to be talked about. For instance:

The rock cycle (how rocks are formed)

Crystal structures (based on the shape of their lattices)

Color, hardness, etc

The envelope with the royal rose crest on it was given to me by Mr.Sariel.

Every year, a Christmas ball is held at the court. The first-class cooks serve an outstanding Christmas dinner.

People dance around the Christmas tree that is decorated in roses The ladies are dressed as glamorously as the roses on the tree.

I read all of this in a memoir written by an aristocrat, "Christmas in the Land of Roses," which I had found in the library some time ago.
