You are SO right about Shadow joining GUN being absolute garbage. Why can’t Team Dark just do their own thing, like being bounty hunters? That would be so much cooler
Tumblr media
Yes. Yes yes. Very much yes.
Saying this, you also- you set off fireworks in my mind and gave me an idea. What do you think of this:
Artifact Thieves, Recoverers, and Traders.
They can absolutely do people too, but, well, you know Rouge. She'll pick a local clean so fast you won't know what hit you.
Want some jewels stolen? They've got it. Want stolen artwork recovered? They can do it. Why call Interpol and have them take years when they can have your priceless painting back in a fortnight?
And if there happens to be a bounty on the head of an art theif, well, Rouge and the crew will take the reward and anything in the vault while they're there.
To get meta into this in a way where it would actually feature in a Sonic game... come on this ride with me.
Robotnik means Worker in Polish. 50 years before the release of SA2 in 2001 was 1949 so shortly after the end of WWII. During WWII, Axis powers stole copious amounts of art from invaded territories. That would include Poland (or, you know, the Sonic world equivalent for all of this.) So let's assume Gerald was originally from Poland.
Remember how Metal contacted the Chaotix in Heros? What if Eggman reaches out, disguised or not, to try and have Team Dark locate Robotnik heirlooms?
OBVIOUSLY it's a ploy to find a secret weapon hidden by that side of the family (he does pontificate about a liniage of genius) but it would allow us to have some cool game play and world exploring, clue hunting, puzzle solving, fun level design. Plus, I'd LOVE to see how Shadow handles having to deal with the bullshit he swears he has put behind him (but putting something behind you and actually dealing with it are two different things, aren't they?)
Bonus points if we also get to play as Team Sonic because Knuckles believes they've had a hand in Echidna artifact trafficking (which they have NOT) and he is pissed, so he drags Sonic and Tails along to put a stop to this. Tails and Sonic help OBVIOUSLY because he is their friend and, if he's right, that's really fucked up, but they also get the inkling that Eggman is up to something.
Fuck, I'd love to do a merging storyline like in SA2 with two polar viewpoints again, and have qctual world building, and-and- *babbles as they get dragged off*

Villain: Florian ValDaata, the Ignoble Heir
Now you’ve gone and ruined my fun, guess I’ll have to go and ruin something of yours now, won’t I?
Setup:  Vampire, crimelord, part-time highwayman. The Scoundrel Florian ValDaata was born to scion a noble line that was extinguished some two hundred years ago, and is perhaps the best unliving example that noble liniage does not impart noble character. The ValDaata were once a prestigious clan with expansive holdings, but backed the wrong horse during a succession crisis and were thrown into disfavor. Chafing at the ignominy of being reduced to backwater barons, the ValDaata consulted with increasingly sinister circles in an attempt to restore their standing. By Florian’s time, the family were little more than a gang of brigands and hangers-on, operating out of a crumbling estate, reduced to robbery and grave robbing to get by.
It was in one of these graves that Florian found something, a wretched soul cursed with vampirism and buried alive before their undead nature manifested,  Thoroughly maddened by their time in the crushing darkness of their sarcophagus. Any honest  resurrectionist would have put the poor creature out of their misery, but Florian had been taught from a young age that because of his linage, the world belonged to him, and thus so did this bloodsucking cadvaer, and its curse.
Adventure Hooks:
Vampirism suited Florian, who used his immortal nature and supernatural influence to carve out a space for his brigade of ValDaata “loyalists”, transforming a gaggle of outcats and lowlives into a criminal enterprise that serves as his guardians and agents in the daylight hours. Ruling the lands formerly held by his family from the shadows, the party is likely to run into Florian’s thugs any time they dip a toe into the region’s criminal underbelly. Alternatively, they could get into a tussle with the bag-men responsible for securing sustenance for their boss, usually those who borrow too much from Florian’s loansharking operations while taking out unspecified collateral.
Anyone who would attempt to hunt Florian the way they would a normal vampire will run into a number of unexpected obstacles: namely that he fights more like a crimeboss than a lord of the night. His minions arn’t undead to be kept out by holyground and running water: they’re well paid cutthroats capable of attacking the party anywhere and anywhen. He doesn’t lair in a crumbling castle, instead prefering to stay at high class establishments while laying traps in the ruins for those seeking his coffin.
Alternitively, a party with a more criminal bent may end up inadvertanly working for Florian, getting a job or two through a unscrupulous contact and eventaully working up the scale. Provided the party don’t mind his dining habits or murderous rages, the heir of Valdaata can make for a generous, handsoff patron, happily giving the party access to his criminal resources for a cut of their plunder.
Further Adventures:
Florian’s gone and crossed a line, getting carried away on one of his semi-regular “hunting trips” and ended up snatching a noblewoman out of her carriage after slaughtering her guards and attendants.  This noble, one Santar Jolvia, happened to be a direct descendant of the family that ousted the ValDaatas from their place in court, and who currently rule much of the territory that was once his by right.   Florian’s been keeping her alive mostly out of indesisive spite, but since her body was never recovered, her powerful family has begun the process of moving heaven and earth to find her ( possibly enlisting the party’s aid, or other bountyhunters). The Vampire can’t make up his mind about what to do to the poor woman: drink her dry? Inter her alive? Transform her and let her loose on the very same search party sent to rescue her? The party are likely to discover Santar’s captivity in some of their interactions with Florian, which means they too will be responsible for her ultimate fate.
The party might happen into ValDaata one evening in a roadside tavern, as the vampire is fond of traveling about in a reinforced carriage to “survey his domain” and sow the seeds of future intrigues. Taking the shady corner usually reserved for mysterious figures with secret knowledge to give, Florian will instead offer the party a gamble: perform some challenging task in exchange for a small fortune. If they fail, they’ll owe him a favor. All Florian truly cares about in these instances is seeing the party squirm, but he’s good on his word, and may even offer the party employment should he take a shine to them.

Third Oni au? Ahhhh everything you make is so cool!
Dude, thank you!!
And yeah! Third Oni AU!
The gist is that Cole is part Oni, and he's always known about it, being brought up with the knowledge. He's still a Ninja, that part didn't change at all, just the added interest of having these extra abilities.
His grandmother was a full Oni; his mother, Lilly, is therefore half Oni and Cole is quarter.
Third generation Oni.
Third Oni AU.
He has some physical attributes from the Oni genetics, his eyes are just that little bit off, they're the general amber but they're vibrant and in a pitch black room, if you shined a light on them there's eyeshine (tapetum lucidum) back; and his canines are a little sharper.
Also, he can shapeshift, really really well. Like you know that scene with Mystaké where she shifts back from being Harumi and briefly becomes a cloud of shadow? Cole does that, but it's instantaneous. He can shift in under a second. He's very fluid at it, he can change form but also shift and change his voice which gives him the ability to sound like anyone even if he still looks like himself.
Zane's known about his liniage because he found out early on in their friendship, Lloyd has major suspicions but can never seem to get solid proof, Wu already knew before Cole was even a Ninja.
The fact that he's part Oni makes season 8 - 10 fairly interesting since Cole finds out so much more about his past and liniage due to all this talk and information about this species that apparently fought dragons (explaining Cole's initial seemingly unfounded fear of the creatures) and drove the First Spinjitzu Master out of the First Realm.
Cole, only ever knowing about his grandmother and what she used to be like, a very nice woman, this shock of finding out that the Oni are really a feared and aggressive race makes him sort of question himself.
But he loves using his powers. He uses them to sneak out the Monastery late at night by turning into Wu because who would stop and question him? Or even turn into the chicken, because everyone steers clear anyway. Or he'll shift into Kai or Jay, see how well he can pretend to be someone else (answer: he's creepy good at acting like other people
He once showed Zane his impression of Jay, and even though Cole still looked like himself and sounded like himself, the mannerisms and lilt to his voice was incredibly accurate that it was almost questionable whether it was really Cole or that he and Jay had somehow swapped bodies)
Overall, a feel good AU with shape-shifting Cole! And the idea is always growing!
Thank you for asking about it, Nons!
