If you want to create an effective hook for writing, consider a phrase like “I once sat on Octavia Butler’s face.” Once you can step past that particular land-mine, the truth of adrienee’s writing becomes clearer. Her longing and sexual connection to Butler is two-toned, both in her sexual writing, and her interworking pleasure into writing. brown argues that Butler was liberated, in that so many things served to be erotic like interspecies sex, threesomes, shapeshifting, male pregnancy, age gaps, incest, symbiotic sexual experiences, and communities.

While plenty of ethical questions might arise from some of these categories, the freedom to picture such encounters and expand the mind’s idea of what pleasure can look like, may ground us in an entirely different way. To feel more connected with our shunned or taboo tendencies (within legal presidency, of course.) While I find Butler’s gripping and harrowing description of incestual breeding, the idea cannot be condoned or furthered in my mind, considering our real-world epidemic of childhood sexual assault. Butler brings up difficult and mighty ethical dilemmas, and she isn’t afraid to see them through, but I certainly am.

adrienne’s connection to Butler, and her musing about what could have happened if she flirted with Octavia is a spectacularly human feeling, and it makes me laugh considering that both people would be regarded as influential and famous within their own rights. It’s good to know they still have the same problems as the rest of us.
