"What do you see?" Kaidan mumbles, face half-mashed into his pillow.

I see what I'm not supposed to - the pulse flutter in your throat - what I'd be killed for if most others knew. The throb at your temple, too, before you rub your forehead. A weakness I'll never exploit. I see the crease of pain in the corner of your left eye and the pinch around your mouth when you resolve to grin and bear it. I hate it. Fuck but I hate it.

I see the hunch of your shoulders loosen in sleep's hold, the tension of every muscle unspooling one drawn out breath at a time as one more migraine recedes. I see the rogue curls you've missed, coming loose with every twist and turn in the sheets.

I see the faintest of smiles, slow and lazy in sleep, in daze, the twitch of your fingers when they loosen from your pillow. The ache still lingering, but less than it was. You'll stay where you are, for another hour yet, weary and sore and heavy, eyes falling shut in too-long blinks and I don't have the heart to wake you proper.

I see my whole world in your life, every minute a gift.

"I see you," Rhys says instead.

Everybody Loses It

Summary: One of the first human biotics, prothean specialist Dr. Rhys Shepard has fought for years to distance himself from the events at BAaT and distance himself from his parents and their military careers. When a prothean beacon is discovered on Eden Prime, he snatches the chance to finally prove himself.

Until the geth attack and he comes face to face with a part of his past he thought long dead...

Chapter 3: Welcome to the Citadel

Excerpt:

Rhys is foolish enough to think walking away from the Normandy – from Kaidan, for a third time in his life – will be easy.  He ends up calling himself all kinds of foolish as he, Sara and the rest of the ground team from Eden Prime hit the docs of the Citadel together.  They’re at the heart of galactic civilization.  The Council, the ambassador – Someone’s going to want to hear about what happened, even if it happened on a backwater human colony. Sure enough, the very second the elevator doors open just outside of C-Sec headquarters, they’re greeted by an escort and an aide sent by the ambassador to greet them. “More like herd us to the embassies,” Rhys mutters beneath his breath.  Out of the corner of his eye, he catches Kaidan’s glance at him, but Rhys lets it go.  He’s never met Ambassador Udina, but he’s heard stories.  He isn’t expecting this meeting to go well.  What I’d give for the days of sunshine and bunnies back home.  At least there I can use my shotgun to take care of the wolves.

Just a few things to note:

1) Rhys is a slightly older Shepard, a combination of a spacer and Earthborn background, and non-military. He goes off to college and graduate school and becomes a prothean specialist

2) He and Kaidan have known one another since BAaT. They have a history together.

3) Kaidan is the Commander of the Normandy. He essentially takes over the role of Shepard in the ME canon timeline

This story isn't a retelling of all of game 1, but will use bits and pieces of it that fit for their story.

Gone are the nights of arguing over the bed, the sofa, the floor.

Gone are the mornings awkwardly keeping to opposite sides of a bed too small for the distance.

Rhys has long fallen silent, book forgotten at his fingertips, every minute awake a conscious effort and he makes it without complaint.  Does he feel similar, Kaidan wonders.  Does he look at the time they’ve lost to the war and think it far too much?  Does he think every second counts now?

Kaidan rolls as one of the Bastard Trio might, slow and stretching from fingers to toes.  Sun-warm and sleepy, perfect for dozing, but not yet.  Not just yet.  He reaches past the boundary between light and shade to Rhys just beyond, smiling when a grey eye blinks open to investigate his movement.

Kaidan lays his hand on the cheek not smushed on folded arms, sharing the sun with his vampire the only way he can, earning a soft chuckle for the gesture, a shake through Rhys’ body that disturbs the ginger furball sprawled over his shoulders.

"You are my sunshine,” Rhys says in a low rumble, and Kaidan laughs, taking a handful of hair and giving a light tug.

“Please do steal my sunshine away.”

Currently knee deep in the hell of moving houses this N7 Day, so I’m going to share a Shepard featuring a role reversal of sorts. (Kaidan is N7 here)

Dr. Rhys Shepard has absolutely no interest in joining the Alliance and instead becomes a Prothean specialist. Until Fate comes calling while on a dig on Eden Prime and he meets up with an old friend from his BAaT days…

Just learned that Knight Rhys’ VA, Noshir Dalal, has a pet Malinois(sorta a German Shepard-esk dog.) named Nala and now I can’t stop thinking bout this idea where Rhys stumbles across a Dogmeat knock-off and begrudgingly takes her in and raises her and naming her Nala.

Haylen is all over the dog, absolutely in love and over the moon with her. Danse is a no brainer based on how he solely acts with Dogmeat.

The group simultaneously takes turn teaching the dog tricks, Rhys loves to play fetch with her, Danse can’t resist her puppy eyes when it comes to food, and Haylen is always pampering the damn dog. Danse is always on Rhys’ case bout the dog and her well being.

But that being said, Nala will always chose Rhys’ if given any chance.

Rhys’ has taught Nala what the difference is between his various tool and trinket when working on power armor, so she’s his lil helper. He also made sure she knows the boundaries and what to steer clear of in his workshop. Things like not getting to PA pieces that he’s unsure of why they don’t work(He’s a mechanic.) or any type of dangerous liquids and object.

When first meeting the Sole Survivor, Nala, like Rhys’, is very skeptical and harsh towards them. Lowly Growling at them when in sight and always staring daggers into their sole(hehe). But she warms up to them and it annoys the living hell outta Rhys watching his dog warm up to a complete stranger.

Only the finest food and purified water the wasteland can offer for this pooch. She has her own personalized dog armor and dog tags(curtsy of Mister Hardass Solider Danse.)

The trio really go out of their way for the dog and no one can tell me otherwise.

I've been thinking about it and I actually think that the hike scene was necessary. I just don't appreciate how Cassian handled it or how Feyre just let him take her away.

My brain is fighting against having this be a thought and rewriting it, but I've never written a fic.

My thought is that it should have been more like:

Feyre: Please take care of her, Cassian. Don't "punish her", the only punishment needed is my mates, who promised he would never lie to me again. If I am not seeking retribution, neither should you or he.

Cassian: This is for Nesta. This hike, will be both a punishment and a reclaiming for her.

Feyre: heavy breath and pause, "I hope so. Take care and be safe."

Cassian: I will

Cassian: "Nesta. Nesta, wake up. We have a long day ahead of us . We will be hiking from dawn to dusk, with only two stops throughout the day. You need to eat and then we will begin." Not in a loving way but in the way a coach who cares but knows you need to be pushed would.

Then during the hike he says things like "keep moving, We're not done yet, as part of your training you will carry the pack - so keep up your strength as it won't fit over my wings. When he realizes she's way to quiet he's like, "these mountains are old, shepards and fairies live here, not the high fae - like Mor and Rhys - but ordinary."

Nesta: scilence

Cassian: Fuck, did I make the right call. "We'll camp here for the night. Have you finished your water? Make sure to drink enough."

When Nesta passes out he double checks her canteen. Asks her about her water and food consumption, after he caught the look on her face, the one that said good I should die. Just to make sure that look wasn't a silent promise to herself and whatever gods she believed in. Some how the pack got lighter but if Nesta noticed she didn't say and neither would Cassian.

It was a silent two days, the only words passed we're from Cassian, making sure Nesta was drinking and eating and was continuing on with the hike. He was not gentle but not adding to her self hate spiral. Her intense drop to her knees at every break and at night had him worried she was not hydrated or fed enough.

I don't know if she needs to faint. Maybe she like slips on the rocks and instead of trying to break her fall and stop her self from rolling down the mountain, she just thinks I deserve to die. Cassian jumps to below her to stop her when it looks like she is about to go over a cliff and picks her up and brings her back to the trail. He demands, "What was that? You didn't even try to stop!"

we pick back up at She stared at the rocks around them.

All the food plates and fires happen the same, and everything after that. Just a better mate and friend. Thats all.
