On second viewing: Suspiria (dir. Luca Guadagnino, 2018)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Somehow explicably a box-office failure, Suspiria is becoming my second favorite Guadagnino's film, as it stuns with detail and surprises with multiple cacophonies. There's plenty of weird elements, which work poorly in isolation, but are fantastic as a full set: Tilda Swinton's trifecta of characters, frequent shifts of protagonists and focalizers, the DDR-based focus, the surprisingly emotional coda featuring Dr. Klemperer and his bad German, Thom Yorke's songs, and the glitchy horror of it all. There are Guadagnino's usually astounding visuals, a high concept, the cute design of the credits, and middling narrative moments. It's a fascinating retelling and restaging of a famous story that was itself deeply flawed due to Argento's misogynistic tendencies. This one's flaws are in its originality.

Horror Movie Review: Suspiria (2018)
Suspiria is a 2018 supernatural horror film directed by Luca Guadagnino with a screenplay by David Kajganich, inspired by Dario Argento’s 1977 Italian film of the same name. In 1977, Susie Bannion leaves her Mennonite family in Ohio and arrives in West Berlin during the height of the German Autumn to audition for the Markos Dance Company. Her arrival coincides with the sudden disappearance of…

Not anti fans saying they finally understand Bella’s (romantic) appeal to Edward in Midnight Sun…when it was also obvious in the original Twilight.
I think a lot of people really struggle with the fact that Bella is a bit of an unreliable narrator with regards to herself, due largely to her major self-esteem issues. Also, she is not in the happiest of moods re: her hatred of Forks. But even beneath her self-deprecation you see her selflessness and her consideration of others. The very first thing she does in the books is to sacrifice her life in Phoenix for Forks so that her mother could be happy with her new husband. She cooks and cleans for Charlie without prompting and lowkey considers Renée as a kind of daughter from years of having to be the mature one—and thinks nothing of it. She diverts conversation away from Angela when Jessica starts to grill her on the type of guys she likes. She encourages Mike/Jessica, making them sit together in the van. She enjoys her time at Port Angeles with Angela and Jessica and helps them find dresses, perfectly content in her auxiliary role. She is diplomatic in her rejection of her three suitors. And then there is the fact that she demands answers from Edward, sees through his lies, notices his vampiric qualities, but also keeps his secrets and is not afraid of the vampiric side of him (as we all know). She is very perceptive; hence how she solves his mystery in virtually no time at all with just a tiny bit of sleuthing.
All of this is downplayed because Bella doesn’t like to boast about herself or even attract attention to herself. Not in Edward’s POV, though. Since he is fascinated with her, he picks up on all these qualities and focuses on them. We get the full, truer picture of Bella’s personality without her self-deprecating narration, and many of her graces in Twilight are highlighted and reinforced in Midnight Sun. And this time we go into detail on Bella’s likes and dislikes, past the cursory summary in Twilight, because Edward is interested in all that. Bella’s humor also comes across more in MS, since Edward finds her funny—both intentionally and not.
Because that’s how first person narration should work. You get the full internal sense of a character, but also their biases and blind spots as well. Just as Bella’s narration is wholly focused on Edward and other people and her own appeal is diminished and backgrounded, Edward’s narration is focused on Bella and other people and his own appeal is diminished and backgrounded. When both have evidence of each other’s attraction to them, they both try to justify it, sometimes correctly, but always with psychic discomfort. The smart reader was supposed to pick up on the subtext in the original book…a subtext that is then made explicit text in the companion novel.

HEADCANON || René’s FATHER.
Tumblr media
I already touched on his mother a little, but René’s relationship with his father is a bit...more...enigmatic.
And I have their names at last: Alphonse ( father )  Fromage Édelie ( mother ) Fromage
Alphonse is a prominent attorney, from old AND new money--he is far too drudged and busy in his affairs to have ever posed any real interest in his son other than the times he noticed that he excelled at track and also his studies. He pushed him growing up, but not in aggressive ways, more subtly. If René did well, he was “acknowledged,” and if he did REALLY well and beat his competition, he was called into his father’s office at their town-estate and lectured on how important it is to be the best, and only dregs come in second place. He’d offer some small compensation or pat on the back, then he’d dismiss him, and go back into his work. He also pushed how sacrifice is everything if you want to succeed, and that means giving up meaningless distractions to get it.
To be honest, René already pushed himself hard and believed these things without his dad’s influence, but couple this with how his mother was so self-involved and snobby, he didn’t have a sounding board to express his annoyance and frustration. So he ran more. And studied harder. And instead of rebelling, he decided that when he surpassed both his parents and had all the accolades they wanted, he would snub THEM and deny THEM the joy of sharing in his spoils.
He had no contact with them once he started his Olympic training and got “famous.” He gets messages from them both personally and through his agents/their office trying to contact him, but he tosses them all. He controls when they get his attention now, not the other way around.
Not that René didn’t rebel in his own way, after all his parents were hands-off most of the time, so he was left to his own devices, so if he felt like going out when they weren’t around, he did it. If he felt like drinking from the expensive wine case, he did it. ( When he was a teen of course ). If he felt like snooping through his parents’ paperwork and seeing just how much they were worth and what they were up to, he did it. It’s not like they noticed. And the few times he did get caught sneaking out after hours or traipsing into the fancy parlor in sweaty clothes, and plopping down on the refined furniture, he just exchanged silent, seething stares with his father, that often resulted in Alphonse simply exiting the room, mumbling under his breath of his disapproval. So, René learned early on he could push his father back, and never get punished for it. Because of that, he assumes deep down he’s won, he’s the Alpha. Another reason he sticks it to his parents by not reaching out to them after all his success.
Deep down, however, René wants all three of them to be close. And although he “doesn’t care” how they all are, a part of him hates how he treats his parents back.
