I prefer the truth even if it hurts. Yet all you give me are half-truths when you know I'll find out anyway.

On second viewing: Suspiria (dir. Luca Guadagnino, 2018)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Somehow explicably a box-office failure, Suspiria is becoming my second favorite Guadagnino's film, as it stuns with detail and surprises with multiple cacophonies. There's plenty of weird elements, which work poorly in isolation, but are fantastic as a full set: Tilda Swinton's trifecta of characters, frequent shifts of protagonists and focalizers, the DDR-based focus, the surprisingly emotional coda featuring Dr. Klemperer and his bad German, Thom Yorke's songs, and the glitchy horror of it all. There are Guadagnino's usually astounding visuals, a high concept, the cute design of the credits, and middling narrative moments. It's a fascinating retelling and restaging of a famous story that was itself deeply flawed due to Argento's misogynistic tendencies. This one's flaws are in its originality.

Flashback (2021)
My rating: 6/10
Horrible shitstain lawyer sets back women's rights 20 years, gets visited by the Ghost of Feminism Past and mends her ways. I mean, it's clearly well intentioned, and it does have its moments, but it also feels a bit like the script started out as one of those poorly researched internet listicles - "3 Great Moments in French Feminism (And Many Examples Of When Women Had It Worse) - The Movie", if you will. Also, the cab driver veers dangerously close to "magical negro" territory, which is, you know. Not great.
Still, as I said, and I don't mean it anywhere near as condescendingly as it sounds, they meant well, and it's overall a fairly enjoyable, if a bit slight, movie.
