We see one of the very rare moments where Holmes is afraid, in the Granada Holmes episode The Final Problem. And it is in the presence of Professor Moriarty.
He shields himself with his robe and is clearly shaken, judging by his breathing. But there's also a look of anger and disgust when he clenches his teeth for just a moment.
Then he begins to speak. His voice falters at "You..." and there are odd pauses between "You... have... paid me", as though he's attempting to gather his courage again to say one last thing to Moriarty before he walks out the door.
Not to mention that Moriarty could kill him at any time, there being a deadly weapon concealed as a cane right there in Moriarty's hand which he had literally cocked and aimed directly at Holmes moments prior to this clip.
Holmes isn't afraid of death, but Moriarty has such a sense of menace about him that it's no surprise that Holmes is scared. In this episode, Mrs. Hudson even compares Moriarty to the 'devil himself'.
However, Holmes still has the suaveness to insult Moriarty by not even calling him by the correct title. Moriarty is a professor, but Holmes refers to him as simply "Mr. Moriarty". While we call our professors 'Mr.' nowadays, it was actually a sign of scholarly prestige in those times. So it's safe to say that Holmes doesn't stay stunned for very long.

I find it so hot & erotic that the first time Sebastian meets the Professor in The Hound of the D’urbersvilles he straight up gives himself to him. his experience meeting this man is so profound and impactful a switch in his brain flips & goes ‘yup, he owns me’ no questions asked. He just decided Moriarty is his everything & I love that for him. This tougher than nails, killer who has seen death in all forms, who has explored unknown lands, who gambles with life possibly on the daily. Spends a couple of minutes in the presence of this ‘cobra, eyed mother fucker that stirs insane deep uncomfortable feelings in him’ & he is completely cool for Moriarty to do as he will with him. In Moran’s own words:
“I knew, my destiny & his Wound together, it was a sensation I had never gotten before, upon meeting a man, when I had it from women, the upshot ranged from disappointment to attempted murder, understand me, Professor James Moriarty was a hateful man, the most hateful, hatable creature I have ever known, not excluding Sir Augustus & Kali’s kitten & the abdominal snow bastard & the reverent Henry James Prince. He was something man snapped that had crawled out from under a rock & moved into the madder house. But at that moment I was his, & I remained his forever. If I am remembered it will be because I knew him. From that day on. He was my father, my commanding officer, my heathen idol, my fortune & rapture. god I could do with a stiff drink.”

The most evil man
Today I read the first part of "The Adventure of Charles August Milverton" (thanks to Dr. Watson as always) and in a few lines you can already know the type of adversary he is.
There are many types of antagonists in all Holmes' stories, but those who are smart have a special place in the canon. Let's see some examples:
Irene Adler in "A Scandal in Bohemia" is the rival of Sherlock Holmes in that case. She left so strong impression in the detective that he calls her The Woman. She's smart, charming, beautiful and bit playful character, but above all she is not a villain. All that she does is to run away with her lover husband and start a new life. A smart woman with strong character that outsmarted Holmes.
In "The Adventure of the Dying Detective" we have Culverton Smith as opponent. He use a tropical disease to kill his nephew for money (IIRC) and tries to do the same with Holmes. He's evil because he kills his own family for what he wants and he has the willingness to do it again with whoever dares to search the truth.
Professor James Moriarty from "The Final Problem" is so far the most famous rival of Holmes, mathematics professor and criminal mastermind. Moriarty is essential in every adaptation of the canon and his intelligence is one of his higlights as a character. What makes Moriarty evil? The professor is the one who plans crimes for other people to execute in exchange of money. He doesn't seem the type of person who commits the crime for himself, he perfectly could be in his office, eating fish and chips while his minions do the dirty work. The evil in Moriarty is that he uses his brilliant mind for planning crimes and apparently he loves that.
We just have the first part of this story, but Charles August Milverton seems to be a completely different type of antagonist. He is smart but instead of making many different plans like Moriarty he uses blackmail. Just like Smith he wants money and is ready to take action himself and see the victim. He looks like a harmless person just like Adler but, contrary to all of these examples, Milverton enjoys to see his victims suffering. There's pleasure in watching the blackmailed person begging for a new deal, extra time or whatever they need to keep everything behind the rug. Charles August is the type of villain who wants to see the world on fire.

An excellent memorial to Professor James Moriarty, recounting his life and accomplishments, and relating his untimely death at the hands of a stalker -- a man who, despite publicly admitting to his guilt, was never prosecuted for his crime.

You know what would have been sexy? If, while Liam was still the Lord of Crime, Sherlock got kidnapped or attacked by other criminals and Liam had intervened to rescue him and punish his attackers in a way that made it clear to all the Underworld that Sherlock Holmes was his.

Just A Little Team Fictional Scenario:) Moriarty POV (Kind of)
Inktraveling ( as dubbed by Yr after the incident in the living room) could be very imprecise in position. Moriarty thought. Not in latitude and longitude, oh no, those were some of the most dependent things, as long as one has a copy of your story, almost anywhere where accesible. No, what he meant was that whether one was standing or say, falling a couple feet to the ground was entirely dependent on where the book was and if it were open or closed.
Once, Propsero had broken a mantelpiece of a house they had gone into no it wasn't breaking and entering if they were leaving, on their way to gather more materials for world takeover, or whatever it was the the wizard wanted. Another, Moriarty remembered, Prospero had fallen on his head after the owner thought there was a bug in the book that he was coming out of, and had decided that shaking the book upside down was the best idea. The most embarrasing incident, was when they were fetching groceries (no they still couldn't drive, and Uber was out of the question), the two Fictionals had decided that inktraveling would be quicker, and set off after lunch.
Moriarty had felt the usual body-becoming-fluid experience, vision disappearing while all he could hear was pages being turned, smelling the book glue that held him together, and, for some bizarre reason, tasted cinnamon. What wasn't par for the course, was for him to tumble head over heels out of the book, and into a very surprised womans' lap. She had looked at him like he was the answer to her prayers (which, he was never to know, was for a tall British man to appear and be British ), and had said "The Lord did well when he made you". Absolutely embarassed, James got out of her lap and fell onto the floor, finally hearing Propero's loud (and surprisingly undignified) laughter. It took the sorceror 13 unbearable seconds to stop, and cast a little mind wipe spell, before heading out the door.
Yes, the professor thought, it will be sometime before I live that down.

The Adventure of the Final Problem: Edwards' Illustrations
While I'm still grieving and preparing myself to compare my edition in Spanish with the OG, I looked for more book illustrations.
This time I wanto to show Edwards' work for this story, a bit less known than Sidney's illustrations.
Harry Clay Edwards (1868-1922) was an American periodical illustrator and painter. Between 1894 and 1896, he did 27 illustrations for Arthur Conan Doyle's fictions in McClure's.
All the images are available here if you want to see them.
