#a scandal in bohemia

Hello, Sherlock Holmes adaptation writer. I have trapped you in this room. It is fully furnished and comfortable. On the table, you will notice a copy of A Scandal in Bohemia by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, of which redistribution is perfectly legal, as the work is in the public domain. You will notice it is rather thin. You have 24 hours to read the approximately 8,550 words in this story. To exit this room, all you must do is summarize the plot of the story without referring to Irene Adler as a seductress or implying she is attracted to Sherlock Holmes. Good luck.

irene adler's adaptations make me so cross. there's the obvious tragedy that clearly barely any of the writers even READ a scandal in bohemia, but also. it couldve been SO GOOD. she and holmes shouldve been besties, not 'in love' with each other.
imagine an irene adler that's holmes' penpal. an irene adler that gives THE sherlock holmes tips on his cases, writing from the backstage of her latest opera. imagine an irene adler who comes over for brunch with holmes after the king of bohemia meets his inevitable untimely end. an irene adler whose husband is vaguely concerned about this until he gets invited too and meets watson. most importantly, imagine an irene adler who actually gets called irene NORTON

I absolutely LOOOVE Irene Adler in the books
The way that she just declined a marriage to a KING cuz she didn’t like the vibe of him and then married some lawyer in a church as quickly as she could with Sherlock Holmes as the only witness (dressed as an old man)
And that she says that she often uses male clothing and takes advantage of the freedom it gives her
An icon for everything honestly

I cannot stress enough how much Holmes did not actually need Watson’s help in Scandal in Bohemia. The entire street was in on his plan and he basically just had Watson throw a smoke bomb through a window. But heaven forbid he do anything at all impressive and NOT have Watson there to assist/watch/be impressed

love the part in a scandal in bohemia where watson is like i feel so bad that i'm in front of a pretty lady's house about to trick her but it's not as bad as i'd feel if i disappointed holmes so oh well then he throws a smoke bomb or whatever and yells fire

The way Watson in Victorian-era canon says "oh, god, yes! Take me to one of your dangerous cases!" goes like this:
“Well, I don’t like it, but I suppose it must be,” said I. “When do we start?”
“You are not coming.” (Said Sherlock).
“Then you are not going,” said I. “I give you my word of honour, and I never broke it in my life, that I will take a cab straight to the police-station and give you away, unless you let me share this adventure with you".
The way Sherlock in Victorian era canon says "I need a partner!" and like this:
"I think that I had better go, Holmes." Said Watson.
"Not a bit, Doctor. Stay where you are. I am lost without my Boswell. And this promises to be interesting. It would be a pity to miss it."
"But your client --"
"Never mind him. I may want your help, and so may he. Here he comes. Sit down in that armchair, Doctor, and give us your best attention." (...)
"If not, I should much prefer to communicate with you alone." Said the client.
I rose to go, but Holmes caught me by the wrist and pushed me back into my chair. "It is both, or none," said he. "You may say before this gentleman anything which you may say to me."
And other:
With an apology for my intrusion, I was about to withdraw when Holmes pulled me abruptly into the room and closed the door behind me.
"You could not possibly have come at a better time, my dear Watson," he said cordially.
"I was afraid that you were busy."
"So I am. Very much so."
"Then I can wait in the next room."
"Not at all. This gentleman has been my partner and helper in many of my most successful cases, and I have no doubt that he will be of the utmost use to me in yours also." [explains Holmes to the client].
The stout gentleman half rose from his chair and gave a bob of greeting, with a quick little questioning glance from his eyes.
"Try the settee," said Holmes to Watson, relapsing into his armchair and putting his fingertips together, as was his custom when in judicial moods. "I know, my dear Watson, that you share my love of all that is bizarre and outside the conventions and humdrum routine of everyday life. You have shown your relish for it by the enthusiasm which has prompted you to chronicle, and, if you will excuse my saying so, somewhat to embellish so many of my own little adventures."

There is but one woman to him, the beautiful Irene Adler of dubious and questionable memory.

Watson (Post-Scandal in Bohemia): I’m awfullly happy for Ms. Adler and Mr. Norton. They’re such a handsome couple!
Holmes: Yes, Mr. Norton was quite handsome, wasn’t he?
Watson: What?
Holmes: What?

For me, people who read A Scandal in Bohemia and go HoLmEs WaS iN lOvE wItH iReNe AdLeR are the personification of how hetero- and amatonormativity cloud our thinking. NO READ THE TEXT PLEASE JUST READ THE TEXT AGAIN!!!
The only thing which is worse is people saying Irene Adler was in love with Holmes. From her perspective, he was extremely annoying, she just wanted a chill life with the man she chose and then her pompous and dishonest ex engages a detective because he's too self-centred to imagine she could be over him, wtf?!?!
