Margaret Dumont (Duck Soup, A Night At The Opera, A Day At The Races)—Margaret Dumont is remembered for being the "straight woman" in most of the Marx Brothers films. She was tall, elegant and imposing, and always stayed classy, whatever antics the Marx Brothers got up to around her. Groucho was shorter than her, and the image of this short guy flirting outrageously with a beautiful tall woman is classic and delightful (even if he also insulted her constantly). She said in an interview that she took great care with her reactions as a straight woman, to enhance the comedy: "Scriptwriters build up to a laugh but they don't allow any pause for it. That's where I come in. I ad lib—it doesn't matter what I say—just to kill a few seconds so you can enjoy the gag. I have to sense when the big laughs will come and fill in, or the audience will drown out the next gag with its own laughter. ... I'm not a stooge, I'm a straight lady. There's an art to playing straight. You must build up your man, but never top him, never steal the laughs from him." An additional note for Discworld fans: if she was around now she would be the ideal actress to play Sybil Vimes.

What you need to know going in:
A classic if I’ve ever read one! This fic is a gorgeous one-shot that sees Galadriel and Sauron just on the cusp of the 4th Age, after Sauron is defeated by Frodo. Galadriel is preparing to leave for Valinor, and is visited by him for a final meeting. The melancholy; the knowledge of all the Ages they’ve been at odds, only to come to the end for a final goodbye… it’s stunningly sad, and breathtakingly beautiful. A must-read.

The AU You Need to Immerse Yourself In Because, Well, Wow: Beautiful Creature of Darkness by @pursuitseternal
What you need to know going in:
It’s a Phantom-inspired fic, y’all! Phantom of the Opera, that is. Set in the 1st Age, Galadriel chafes under her brother Finrod’s overbearing rule in Dol Guldur when she becomes enchanted by a mysterious, magnetic presence. Three guesses as to who it is. 😉 Galadriel becomes increasingly drawn to a very persuasive and persistent Sauron, despite the darkness that shrouds him — even as an unnamed threat shadows her brother’s kingdom. If you’re a fan of Phantom, this is a fun read for the Gothic romance and well-drawn parallels to the Leroux/Weber favorite. I’m intrigued to see where it goes!

The Complete But Never Forgotten Masterpiece: Shine and Lady of the Seas by eye_of_a_cat
What you need to know going in:
Another eye of a cat classic! For me, this series (and yes, you definitely should read both) was the first “Halbrand makes Galadriel her armor in Armenolos” fic. And, like all of eye of a cat’s works, BOTH fics are absolute bangers. I mean… do I need to say much more than he makes Gal her armor and Cat wrote it? 😂 I don’t think I do, but just in case, here’s what I’ll add: terrific sexual tension that’s well, well-rewarded in the 2nd fic in the series, and it’s all Sauron’s POV, so expect possessive, awestruck, utterly beguiled (and beguiling) deliciousness. You’re welcome.

The WIP That Will Wreck You (In the Best Way): Pour Your Light In Me And Watch Me Dissolve by @maironiiel
What you need to know going in:
This S1-set fic gives a repentant-but-struggling Sauron in Numenor, simultaneously set ill at ease by Galadriel and her insistence he join her in the campaign to reclaim the Southlands, and irrevocably bewitched by her. But it’s not just Galadriel who calls to him—the Valar do, too, sending Ossë and others to appeal to him to return to the light in full; to Valinor for judgment. The result is a scintillating slow burn with promise for more, with a lovely expansion and interpretation of what we saw in the show, particularly in how the Valar and other Maia might react or appeal to this version of Mairon. A part 1 with one chapter left to go before part 2, I’m curious to see how this story evolves.

This is another recent sub I added to my rotating reading list, so it’s just starting to heat up, but when it’s a John Wick AU, you know to expect a thrill ride right from the start—and the fic doesn’t disappoint! If you’re not familiar with John Wick, here’s all you need to know: Galadriel is a retired, renowned assassin known as The Daughter from a family of deadly assassins. She’s drawn from her retirement when her brother, Finrod, is killed by a rival crime family controlled by Sauron. In an attempt to curb her quest for vengeance, Sauron turns to subterfuge… and masquerades as an unwitting ally to gain her trust. Where they go from there? 👀 I’m excited to see, but so far, this is a perfect premise for this ETL pair to keep those thrills coming.

YAYY OKAY LOTS OF STUFF UNDER THE CUT <3
so basically I've just made a bunch of shit up bc we don't get a lot in the movie and I like to have fun and be myself. none of it is based off like the weird semi-canon myspace stuff I've heard abt?? if there are similarities they are pure coincidence bc I'm not reading all that god bless.
so for the moms they unfortunately still don't have names so I'm just gonna call them by their colours love and light. I've talked abt them before here but the short version of the story is they, along with marni and mag, were in an opera troupe and caught rotti's interest. they sort of just formed a social circle which nathan was also part of bc like idk college besties or something idk. rotti married red and had luigi, after which red was like you know what I'm kinda craving some nathan and left him. during one of her visits luigi killed her not like with ill intent or whatever bc he was like 5 but still he did fully murder her. rotti, not knowing a warning when he saw one, married blue and they had amber, and then blue was like you know what red was absolutely right I also want some nathan in my life and also left rotti. blue was the least well off of the opera troupe, though, and had some unpaid geneco bill lying around so she got repoed. rotti was still determined to have an opera wife so he married ourple and they had pavi and once again one of rotti's wives left him for nathan at which point he was like you know what if this ever fucking happens again that is IT I am DONE. also ourple died badly from a parasite bc me and my friend had just watched venom when we came up with this. at this point rotti married marni and we all know the rest
AS FOR THE KIDS I think luigi would basically always have been pretty unstable so he wouldn't have been put in the spotlight as much as a kid. also if you've seen a lot of my repo art you might have noticed I draw him with this big scar over his forehead which is bc in my brainverse at some point rotti would have had him undergo some sort of brain surgery in an attempt to calm him down a bit tho I can't imagine it worked at all. also think that basically from that point rotti was basically set on at the very least not letting luigi inherit and probably a bit doubtful of his other kids already
I picture amber and pavi being closer in age and like somewhat closer at least for the first few years of their lives. also I feel so strongly that rotti would have given them like ALL the spotlight just to balance off how little the public would have gotten to see of luigi, so I always picture them as basically child stars. when the novelty of being talented kids started wearing off and the public got a little less interested in them I think amber took it the hardest which is why she's so insistent on returning to the opera when mag quits
also with the kids I wanna stress I don't imagine any of this in my head to make them more sympathetic I think in the present they are all horrid bitches and deserve the guillotine but I am also a fan of succession so I was kind of primed to make up a lot of rich person lore sorry :(

rin & makoto--SUCH an important relationship for both of them!!!!! they're the real complements of each other, i think, rin is fiery and passionate and sharp and makoto is grounded and doting and UGHHHH

Episode 5 thoughts
Tanya is annoying but I hate to see these men con her and belittle her.
The way this couple is looking at Harper is oooo its hot as fuck. Aubrey is so fine too.
The opera scene is actually very sweet but I am still suspicious of this man and his whole group.
Oh they are broke.....damn tonya you are about to be "had".
That is a ginormous secret that Daphne just dropped. Whew lord they better hope that secret doesn't get out because they are in a dysfunctional but happy stable marriage.
"Uncle" or uncle? Cause he has been giving me rent boy since this group showed up together.
Albie might be an actual nice guy but he screams incel at moments, other moments he just seems like a sweet boy trying not to be like his dad and granddad.
I think Lucia is going to have a fiance or something because that guy was like.....hmmm. Oooo or that could be her brother and he is trying to be like "be more discreet".

Can these four fuck already cause they're drawing out this jealous power play, and I don't want to come out of this show hating either Daphne or Harper. We as a society really do love a deranged woman.
I want Mia and Lucia to have the best life ever because they done so much for this hotel and only one is being paid.
Ethan is hot but man does he got some serious resentment bubbling against Cameron. It is kind of funny that he was so "IM NOT CHEATING" only to turn around and start thinking his wife is going to petty fuck his "friends". (He definitely may be right based on Cameron's past but I need him to take a second, collect himself, and then bring it up. Oh wait but then he'd have to take his wife's approach.
This 3 generation men trio being turned away from a matriarchy mirrored household is pretty funny. Its even funnier because they may be blood related.
Ethan is bugging! Daphne and Cameron are messy and full of lies but they are really functional. They also clearly do care about eachother whereas Harper and Ethan don't even seem to like eachother. Sexual attraction aside in ep 1 and 2 all he did was talk down on what she wanted to do on the trip. It was pushback from every side and he was the one person who could be like "oh honey that is a great choice" without it seeming ingenuine. I wonder why they got married.
Not these gays about to set Tonya up with a boy toy and snow ❄. I hate it because this group seem to have alterior motives. British boy is drowning himself in alcohol to prepare for whatever meanwhile killing Portia's mood.

Ep 7/Finale next week woot woot. My prediction is its Cameron, Ethan, and then a red herring. Trailer is looking mighty spicy for the finale. Also, I like that the Italian actors are getting their own moment to shine in certain episodes for their character development and we get to see their post show bts talk back. "All the characters are tragic and funny."

This question made me laugh. It's rare that this happens, but it does. Synchronicity began as a very different story, where John and Sherlock were boyfriends at school and broke up, only to meet years later. Originally it was meant to be alternating POV, but once I began with John's part, I realised that he wasn't just sad, he was really angry at Sherlock, whereas Sherlock was oblivious. No, they hadn't been boyfriends, John said. Sherlock did something unforgivable, in John's eyes, and even years later, he was furious. So it became enemies-to-friends-to-lovers, with John's resistance gradually wearing down as Sherlock became more and more ridiculous and understood why John was mad.
40) best piece of feedback you’ve ever gotten.
A published author came to talk to a writing class I was in years ago. She said, take your draft and tear off the first two pages. Throw them away. Page 3 is where your story begins. The idea was that inexperienced writers (which we all were) usually write a lot of backstory or character description or other things before they get into the action. A good story incorporates those things once the plot is rolling.
It's a variation of the advice to "kill your darlings," that is, to be willing to cut out the parts you love if they don't work in your story.
I prefer this: Don't kill your darlings, recycle them.
If you've ever written a perfect scene or dialogue or description, and then had to scrap that part of the story because it doesn't work, it's tempting to try to force it to work because it feels like such a waste.
But no writing is wasted: Just because you've written something that feels good doesn't mean you should use it. It's not wasted effort. I've recycled a lot of good bits of stories that didn't work for one reason or another. Keep it, and eventually you'll find the right place to use it.

The Last Envoy: I worked on this longer than any other story I've written, did more research, and I think the idea is my most original. I'm happy with the way it turned out.
49) do you want to be published some day?
No. I'm not sure that would be more fun than writing fanfiction. There's a lot of freedom in writing like this, making up stories for a bunch of fans who love the same characters I do. No pressure to sell books. Publishing has changed a lot over the last twenty years, so there are many options we didn't used to have (i.e. back when I sent off my very thrilling space-opera epic to the only publisher who still received unsolicited manuscripts). I think it depends on why you write, and I'm definitely a hobby writer, doing it just for fun.

My thoughts on every new GMMTV trailer:
Enigma: cautiously hopeful. It looks very interesting and intense, and I think I will be able to handle the amount of horror in it though it is a genre I am nervous about because I scare easily. I'm just not a fan of student teacher romances, but I'll withhold judgement till after I see it (judging whether I like it. Not judging you if it's a trope you like, whatever floats your boat).
A Boss and a Babe: it looks silly and ridiculous and fun. I genuinely didn't think Forcebook would get another chance to star together and I'm so so happy they did, I love how they play off each other. Oddly I am fine watching boss employee relationships even though the student teacher ones make me uneasy.
Find Yourself: on the fence about this one, though I'll give it a try for Non and Earth. The tropes they are leaning into for comedy in the trailer aren't my favourite and I'm not a fan of them seeming to play drunken sex for laughs, but when the trailers tone shifted to be a more serious examination of age gaps I became intrigued. I'm just not sure I trust how this show will handle that subject in all its complexity.
Double Savage: very excited to have Ohm playing a darker character (I know we still have 10YT this year too). I think he will absolutely kill this role, I love his acting and think he is superb. I also think Film is fantastic and I'm excited to see her too. Looks like lots of lakorn crime type tropes, so that should be fun.
Hidden Agenda: I'm unsure about this one because while I like both Joong and Dunk well enough I wasn't enamoured with eithers' acting in Star and Sky, and they had the most disappointing kiss my god. This looks like the plot is more interesting at least than Star in my Mind, and I love a lot of the side cast. I'm hoping they just felt awkward acting together at first, and they will seem less stilted in this. I'm pretty 50/50 on whether I've liked the director's previous work so this could go either way.
23.5: I'm so so excited for this, it's happening guys!!!! MilkLove GL let's go sapphics let's go! I need this to do well and hopefully herald more long-form GLs. I adore both actresses and love them together as well. I'm expecting very 2015 BL vibes and fluff, and honestly not expecting more than a peck of a kiss (if I'm wrong feel free to point at this post and laugh at me I honestly would love to be wrong), but luckily I adore fluff and softness so I'm going to enjoy it anyways. The yearning! The sweetness! I'm over the moon
Phro Thoe Khue Rak Raek: I think I would be interested if this was just a movie but I'm not sure I have the attention span for a full drama about reminiscing and reconnecting with am old love. I'll probably skip this one unless something really catches my attention. Neo was really cute in this trailer though.
Cooking Crush: I am giddy about this one. I felt so sad Off thought him and Gun couldn't get roles together anymore because of their ages, and then here they are and the trailer looks really funny and cute! I'm also really excited they seem to have reversed their dynamic and Gun is playing the more asshole one, he definitely has the acting range and hopefully this means if OffGun continue going forward they will get to change their dynamic a bit more.
Wednesday Club: I'm not that interested. Honestly don't have much to say about the trailer, beyond Piploy and Jane look so so good! Please I'm already gay etc etc
Last Twilight: I'm definitely the most excited for this one! The plot looks interesting, JimmySea were excellent together in VV, and it's P'Aof who I trust implicitly. It is bringing me back to Want to See You (vdrama), which I overall enjoyed but I need this one to be less of a soap opera, I couldn't handle that twice. Also loved the music in the trailer. Also Jum ❤️ I also think Jimmy will be fun to watch playing the bad boy role, and he is super adorable which is a huge bonus. I'm not knowledgeable enough about adult onset blindness to really judge that aspect of the show.
Loneliness Society: While You Were Sleeping let's gooooo! My third most anticipated, I'm so excited for this! Morally grey and complex lead? With relatable issues around age and loneliness? Sign me up! This looks phenomenal. And I screamed when I saw Jan, I love her so much ❤️ though I am disappointed she got no main roles this year (side note Thailand is doing cherry magic what?????).
Only Friends: holy shit!!!! Second most anticipated and only trailer I've rewatched multiple times because there's so much going on! It's going to be messy as fuck and I'm going to eat up every minute! Can't believe we get Forcebook a second time next year, and KhaoFirst as well. The song they play at the end is fire 🔥 P'Jojo directing AND the cast is stacked!? Book Force Khao Neo Jennie First Mark and Piploy! I'm stoked
Faceless Love: eh. Dew's character really pisses me off, and while I have warmed up to rich asshole business owner types in the past (Poongduck, Business Proposal) my real life dislike of those types of people make it one of my least favourite archetypes and I'm not convinced I'm going to watch. I'm curious to see the reactions of people with face blindness to this as well.
Dangerous Romance: oh this look fantastic! I love this type of messy, high angst enemies to lovers. This is going to be so much fun, and I really liked what the director did with Love Mechanics so I have really high hopes. Plus Chimon is one of my favourite actors, and I would already die for Sailom - he's such a mouthy little sass master.
The Jungle: don't really understand what's happening because there are no subs, though it looks like a spiritual successor to PS I Hate You. Big cast, big drama. I'll watch it no matter what because it's one of my girl Mild's only roles next year and Lookjun's only role. Big downside is having to put up with watching Krusty.
Midnight Museum: not much plot was revealed in this trailer, however the creepy fantasy vibes are immaculate and I'm excited for this. I'm very curious about Gun's character's cryptic past, and hope it's suitably angsty so he can flex his acting, because he is phenomenal! Also Ploy ❤️
Our Skyy 2: oh my god! Special episodes for The Eclipse, Bad Buddy AND A Tale of Thousand Stars? Especially when we had all basically given up on an ATOTS special?!?!? Couldn't be more excited! I'm excited for everyone really (other than another Star in my Mind special lmao please let it fade into obscurity). If Never Let Me Go is as good as I anticipate (and I trust P'Jojo with my life) it will be great to see their characters again as well. My only disappointment is Forcebook is not reprising AkkTheo :( As one of the handful of people who really enjoyed Enchante I just want my Enchante special goddammit!
Beauty Newbie: I really don't think I trust how a plot about someone who's had plastic surgery and is now gorgoeus (let's be real Baifern is fucking ethereal) is going to handle issues like beauty standards. 😬 As someone who definitely falls outside the line of 'acceptable' look wise due to acne, weight, etc I'm not feeling this plot. The only reason I'm torn is my love of Baifern, so we will see if my love for her is enough to give this a try. And maybe I'm wrong and the plot will be amazing and profound, but I have serious reservations.
The Interest: eh. Whatever.
All in all I'm really looking forward to this lineup and think it will be a fantastic year. The ones I'm not liking based on the trailer I'm realllllllly not liking but I can just drop them of not watch.
Side notes: I was really worried Home School had been cancelled, it was one I was really looking forward to and I'm relieved it was only pushed back.
Also does anyone know what Miss Gigie is up to? She doesn't seem to be in anything upcoming other than Warp Effect and I miss her :(

Anon, I'd fucking combust if Ian and Mao did a wuxia together. I fucking want it too. I want it so bad.
Anyways, onto the headcanon (please note, I don't really watch a lot of wuxias so I'm going to base this off of what I have seen)
Jiang Yuelou would be like a detective of some sort. He'd also definitely carry a sword, just because I like the idea of Jiang Yuelou carrying a sword
Chen Yuzhi would obviously be a healer, probably one of the best in the lands. He'd be like a Wen Qing, I suppose. His weapons of choice would be acupuncture needles or a fan. You know, like a japanese war fan? Yeah, he'd use one of those. Or the type of fan that Wen Kexing uses, the one that has like a thin blade on the edge? He can also use a sword, but needles and fans are more discrete and he's a doctor/healer for gods sake, it would be a little intimidating to see a doctor carrying around this huge ass sword
Jiang Yuelou and Chen Yuzhi meet kind of by accident, sort of like in the drama, Chen Yuzhi is healing someone, a raid or an attack happens on the village he's working in, Jiang Yuelou shows up with his gang (song rong and sun yongren of course) and basically arrests anyone that looks suspicious to him and Chen Yuzhi looks hella suspicious
They get into a fight, like a shouting match of sorts, and Jiang Yuelou decides to throw Chen Yuzhi in jail and confiscate his medical kit you know, to check to make sure that there's nothing in there that's dangerous or whatever and he just finds that its full of medicine and he realizes that Chen Yuzhi really is a doctor
He releases Chen Yuzhi, who throws him a dirty look before exiting the jail and Jiang Yuelou smirks because most people would be cowed by him but not Chen Yuzhi and that intrigues him
Zhan Junbai isn't an asshole in this au and is like a prince. His weapon of choice definitely is a sword, he's as good with a sword as Jiang Yuelou is. He helps out Jiang Yuelou with his investigations and is able to get him into places that he can't go because he doesn't have clearance or whatever
Yu Tangchun is a opera singer who is secretly an assassin sent to kill Zhan Junbai. Weapon of choice? Daggers hidden in his sleeve. Or a fan, like Chen Yuzhi. Of course, instead of killing Zhan Junbai Yu Tangchun ends of saving him and it'll play out sort of like the drama, where Yu Tangchun is taken care of by Zhan Junbai and he's mad about it because he's not this tyrant like he was made out to be
Song Rong and Sun Yongren are there as well. Song Rong's weapon of choice? Iron gauntlets. Sun Yongren's weapon of choice? Surprisingly archery
Jiang Yuelou and Chen Yuzhi team up to take down these corrupt leaders and bring peace to the land
Jiang Yuelou and Chen Yuzhi also definitely get surrounded by assassins sent by the corrupt officials to stop them (it's not a wuxia if the MCs aren't surrounded by assassins at some point) and Chen Yuzhi and Jiang Yuelou are pressed back to back before they glance at each other and subtly nod before going to work
Jiang Yuelou hacks and slashes at the assassins while Chen Yuzhi gracefully dances around the assassins before slicing throats with his fan or stabbing people in the neck with his acupuncture needles
When the assassins are dead, Jiang Yuelou and Chen Yuzhi look at each other and laugh softly before Chen Yuzhi notices that Jiang Yuelou is injured. Cue freak out and then the intimate bandaging/cleaning wound montage while Jiang Yuelou is staring at Chen Yuzhi with fucking heart eyes and Chen Yuzhi is doing his best not to notice it
If there's also not a point where Jiang Yuelou and Chen Yuzhi are forced to hide in an alley or between houses as they're running from corrupt guards/assassins and Jiang Yuelou has his hand over Chen Yuzhi's mouth while pressing him up against a wall, then what's the fucking point?
Honestly, you could take the Killer and Healer drama, turn it into a wuxia, and it'd still fucking work

On Motivation
So I'm a big advocate of "there's no bad reason to learn a language."
A lot of judgemental people are really concerned that people learn language for the "right" reasons. Don't learn a language because you think it's sexy. Don't learn a language because you like the aesthetic. Etc., etc.
A lot of people will tell you that you can't learn a language just because you got into a fandom, because that's inauthentic and unsustainable.
But I know plenty of people who've been locked in to the same fandom hyperfixation for 20 straight years, so the idea that fandom interest alone can't sustain a language hobby really depends on what kind of fan you are.
Learning a language is good.
I believe that any reason to do a good thing is a good reason.

Let me expand on that.
(okay, I'm about to make a comparison that might come across as very insensitive and trivializing, but please trust that I mean well and I am writing this post in good faith and bear with me)
I'm reminded of a post I read about the psychology of suicide.
People often mistakenly assume that those at risk for suicide need a Big, Important, Serious, reason to keep on going.
But when you talk to people who have actually struggled with suicidal thoughts and clinical depression, people who have actually been hospitalized for being a danger to themselves and survived, they will tell you that it was often silly, stupid reasons that kept them going when they were at their worst.
"If I kill myself, no one will be able to feed my cat."
"If I kill myself, I'll never get to see the series finale of my favorite soap opera."
"If I kill myself, I won't get a chance to eat the pie my aunt promised to bake me for my next birthday."

Given the "current situation" and all — catastrophic climate change, covid, rampant poverty, an epidemic of burnout, etc. — I think most of us know what it's like to struggle with depression, even if we never reached the level of contemplating suicide.
And I think regardless of whether or not we're depressed, we're all looking for ways to stay motivated.

My point is,
Motivation isn't all or nothing. It doesn't have to be about having grand ambitions. It doesn't have to be about carrying on family the family legacy.
Whether you're trying to learn a language or trying to stay alive, it's not about having a GREAT reason, or even a good reason. Often it's about having lots of little, silly reasons.
Whatever keeps you going.

i'm a soap fan and a swanfire shipper, so please don't take this the wrong way, i'm genuinely curious. one of the reasons i don't like j*sam (or j*son for that matter) is because he'll literally always choose sonny and the mob over even being with his kids. i'm a scrubs fan who's always glad robin broke up with j*son for this reason. and soaps being soaps, i ship a few pairings who are trainwrecks lol, but i hate that sam is always putting herself and her kids in danger. i'm just not a fan of general mobspital overall i guess. what are your thoughts on the mob element of the show?
I mean, I don’t agree with you at all and I don’t typically feel like explaining myself to someone who hates my faves and shows little to no chance in changing their minds but - I’ll bite.
I think the biggest thing is that all of the characters on this show live dangerous lives and put their families in danger, so the “mob” aspect is pretty moot to me. Like I really don’t give a fuck about it. Sam is also a Cassadine. Her dad is the one who almost blew up Jason and Danny up a few months ago. Her mom has slept with every bad guy on the damn show. She was a con artist and a PI and has enemies from both, her life was always dangerous and always will be regardless of Jason. And in the end, it’s been mostly things that have had NOTHING to do with the mob that have put her kids in danger. Danny being switched at birth didn’t have anything to do with that, neither did Heather kidnapping him, or that guy who thought he was a vampire kidnapping him, cancer can happen to anyone. The most recent incident was because of Julian, who says Sam and her family are safe from her dad and his enemies if she’s not with Jason? Yeah it’s the mob but it’s not Jason’s mob business it’s her father’s. Wasn’t it her own aunt her tried to kill her when she went into labor with Emily? Any threat from Shiloh was because Kristina accidentally joined a cult, and Shiloh hated Sam from her con artist days. Sam’s kids aren’t in danger because of Jason, they’re in danger because this is a soap opera where basically every person in town has murdered someone at some point. Honestly, half the time Jason and Sam are running around with guns it isn’t mob related at all, it’s because of other nonsense and they’ve gotta protect people because lord knows the PCPD can’t. Half the time it’s genuinely like - what mob? Like seriously, most years I couldn’t pinpoint an actual mob story if I tried. And when they finally do actually do a mob story, they’re usually pretty dumb and end in less danger than anything else this show does. Also, I think saying Jason puts the mob and Sonny before Sam and the kids is a pretty false talking point that people like to throw out there just because they hate him. He’s actually shown time and time again that he’ll go to them first and that he’ll do anything for them. “It’s not about you being second, it’s about Sam being first”. Usually Sam is the one telling him to go, or recently he went out doing mob stuff directly because Danny was threatened and he needed to find the truth and keep him safe. He’s even offered to leave the mob before and Sam said no. Up until the recent mess of a storyline, Sam has always maintained that he’d still have enemies regardless and they’re safer just staying put and doing everything to protect their family.
Scrubs aren’t saints (don’t take that the wrong way, they’re my second fave couple). Patrick had that affair with Lisa, we know how that turned out and she was hella dangerous. Anna still has enemies and gets put in danger and that can trickle down (the whole Peter mess comes to mind right now, Emma comes and stays with her and she’s around all that). Robin has always remained friends with Sonny and Jason and defended them, even in dangerous situations. Etc.
So like, the mob? Who cares, imo. Psychos are gonna psycho. Jerry is gonna poison the town. Ava is gonna switch peoples meds. Julian is gonna plant bombs. Desperate people are gonna kidnap babies. The Kristina’s of the world are gonna join cults. Serial killers come around pretty often. Cars crash a lot (as do buses and planes and boats). Cassadines are gonna Cassadine. I mean, this show has had aliens and evil weather machines and whatever the fuck the toxic balls story was. It never ends, and it rarely is mob related.
So to summarize: I don’t think Sam puts her kids’ lives in danger (not any more than any other character). The danger has almost always been a weird external element. She and her kids have never really been in MORE danger because of Jason than they would be otherwise and so the mob itself almost never factors into what I think about them as a couple. Or what I think of the characters on the show in general.

The Last Unicorn (1982)
This here is mainly a nostalgic movie for me, a big part of my childhood but still is a great movie and will remain to be an important film to me.

Glory (1989)
My favorite war movie of all! Not only is it based on a true story, the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment, a regiment made up of all black men, the first African American military unit in the American Civil War. But of course there is more to it than that but my god do I adore it!

Look I'm a die hard fan of this show and I literally talk about it all the time but I'm really not as into this season as I had hoped. Last season was amazing and had a balance of everything but I just feel like this season is too much drama and I don't like feeling anxious and depressed at the end of each episode. Last season was suspenseful and was very much a "who done it" crime drama which I loved and I think everyone else did too but this season has just been a bunch of useless soap opera drama and I can't handle it. I wish we could go back to the first season because it focused more on the detective skills than the constant back and forth between characters. Everyone was happy and steadfast in their journey to find out who killed Jason but it also had the issues of Betty and Archie and then Jughead coming into the scene and they showed how jug was a homeless teen and shown light on serious class issues and it was just really great. Please stop making it so cheesy and just saddening. I don't like it. I watch the show to escape from my personal problems and now I feel like all of it makes me feel worse. I mean even pops makes me upset and right now I feel like I'm only in the fandom for the fanfics. I watch the show religiously and it's what I look forward to all week but it just keeps leaving me feeling empty and I really don't want to feel that way.

The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness
It's very hard to write a formal and detailed review of any book in the Chaos Walking Trilogy without spoiling anything so please excuse my limited way of explaining certain moments in the story. I have huge respect for people who hate spoilers as I am one of them.
The novel centers around Todd Hewitt, a teenager desperate to become a man living in Prentisstown, a small town in the outskirts of New World, a planet where everyone can hear everyone else's thoughts in an endless stream of what is referred to as "Noise." In the past, all of the women have been killed by alien habitants called the Spackle. A hole of silence is found in Todd's Noise and the Mayor and his people are after him. On the run, he finds a girl with no Noise, the first he has ever seen in his life, and he realizes that everyone in Prentisstown has lied to him.
When I first started to read this novel, I was caught off guard by the grammar and vocabulary of Todd, the narrator, as the story is told from his first person POV. However, I immediately got used to it as it is explained very early in the novel that he was never educated, therefore his grammar and spelling isn't perfectly polished. The first 15-20 pages of the book are not very convincing, as they are pretty focused mostly on introducing the setting, but then the tension suddenly punches you in the face and after that, it just never stops.
Many people classify this as a science fiction novel though I would never classify it as one, even if there are spaceships and aliens briefly involved. There is so much character and adventure and action involved that it's a whole other type of book in the sci-fi genre. It leans more towards the direction of a YA dystopian action thriller and it has everything you might expect from one. Guns, fights, explosions, and 80% of running around in the woods like there's no tomorrow.
My main expectation when I picked up this novel was to get an unputdownable action-packed and character driven piece of work and I got just that in ways I couldn't even imagine. The word "conflict" is written all over this book and I love it. The character development and their choices are beautifully developed and flawless. It is furiously paced with triumphant, violent, and heartbreaking moments. It marks a great beginning to a great series.
Trust me, when I say that a piece of fiction that has a talking dog in it is worth the time, it truly is.
Here are a few of my favorite things in this book. (Not a Sound of Music reference.)
- Geez, that pacing! Just when you think things are gonna slow down, they just don't. It's very rare to find that in books nowadays. Ness is a genius at structuring a story and he adds a touch of suspense and conflict to every point of the story.
I believed and felt every emotion the narrator conveyed and that is something I really appreciate in a book and there was motive behind every decision that had to be made.
Viola. She is a strong character and a great helping hand and friend to Todd. The way she solved problems and helped Todd throughout their journey together was meaningful and sometimes hilarious to be honest. I could honestly relate more with her than with Todd, because in a way, she highlighted and commented how the reader would in a certain situation. She is just amazing. Yes, I think I may have a fictional character crush.
The climax and final confrontation was suspenseful and had me at the edge of my seat wondering what the heck was gonna end up happening.
Manchee. What the hell? He is just such a darn cute dog. I felt bad for him because Todd didn't treat him all that well though.
Now that we got all of the fanboyish love out of the way, here are the few cons I encountered throughout the book:
Todd's evolution and development as a character throughout the entire trilogy is beautiful, however in this book, this is his most annoying phase. I couldn't help but roll my eyes every time he whined about how he wanted to become a man so desperately and how he counted down the days until his 14th birthday. And I get that he wasn't educated but, dear Lord, is he stupid. I understand that to develop a character, you have to highlight their flaws first, but not to a point where I end up sometimes loathing the main narrator of the story.
There is an underwhelming amount of antagonists in here: Mayor Prentiss, Preacher Aaron, Davy Prentiss Jr., Matthew Lyle (this character shouldn't have existed AT ALL by the way). I wanted to slap them all in the face and tell them to take a hike. Like I said, there are many conflicts in this book and I get that a book should set obstacles for the main characters to face, however, I remember having felt at some point that the main characters should've been given a break. They couldn't breathe without getting harassed by someone the next second.
There is a good over 50 pages halfway through the book that shouldn't have been in there whatsoever. I'm not gonna spoil but if you want to see for yourself, anything with the word "Farbranch" didn't help the story at all if things were gonna go back to the way they were in the first place. I get what Ness was trying to do but it could've been presented in a different way.
Every Chaos Walking fan dreads page 350. Come on, now. That happened WAY too early. It just broke my heart and I couldn't help but cry.
And finally, here is the part that I find difficult to explain. There are a few underwhelming moments here and there where it felt like the story was kind of headed the wrong direction, and that brings me again to that unnecessary big chunk in the midpoint. There is also a moment near the climax after heartbreaking page 350 that I felt drove the story all over the place.
Overall, this marks a great beginning to the trilogy, and it brings people excited for the long run. It is my least favorite book in the series though, not at all because it is bad, but because of the few unnecessary characters and moments halfway and the tropes that made it seem like it is still slightly trying to figure out its place and genre. However, this doesn't stop it from being a great and suspenseful read.
Again, don't come to this book expecting a "space opera, alien invasion, laser gun" type sci-fi, because it barely resonates the clichéd tropes of the genre.
This gem is definitely worth the read. Don't let the unnecessary moments catch you off guard. Continue reading!
