National Bourbon Day
The smoothest and most flavorful of all liquors, Bourbon absolutely deserves its own day. Host a tasting, find an event, or treat yourself to an upper-shelf selection.
Nobody really needs a good excuse to enjoy the odd tipple, but National Bourbon Day gives anyone the perfect reason to dust off a bottle of this fine whiskey and have a glass or two!
Those who are less steeped in the culture of alcoholic beverages may  not know the difference between bourbon and whiskey, which is certainly  okay! This is the perfect day to learn. National Bourbon Day has been  set aside as a day to learn about and appreciate this fine liquor which  some people refer to as the “Spirit of America”.
It’s time to celebrate this American ‘Native Spirit’!
History of National Bourbon Day
Legend has it that the date on which National Bourbon Day is  celebrated is the anniversary of the very first time this famous drink  was distilled, way back in the late 1700s. It may only be a legend but,  whatever the truth of this is, National Bourbon Day is surely a day  worth celebrating.
Bourbon is a specific category of American whiskey, which is made  from a mash that is primarily corn based–at least 51% must be corn in  order for it to be classified as bourbon. Other grains in the mash  typically include malted barley, rye or wheat.
The mash is then distilled, then aged for at least two years in  barrels that are new charred oak barrels, in order to be “straight  bourbon whiskey”. Many bourbons are aged longer than 2 years. In fact,  one labelling rule states that any bourbon aged for less than 4 years  must state as much on the label.
This is a very strong liquor. The corn mash to make the bourbon  starts out at 80% alcohol and, through the aging process as well as  filtering and bottling processes, the final product can be no less than  40% alcohol by volume.
Bourbon definitely originated in the US state of Kentucky, sometime  in the 1700s, before it even had acquired its official name. The name  seems to be a nod to the French Bourbon Dynasty, and possibly was in  honor of Bourbon County, an area of Kentucky that was known for its corn  growing.
While some people think that bourbon must be made in Kentucky (like  cognac must be made in a certain region of France) that’s not actually  true. It simply needs to be distilled and aged in the state in order to  be given the special name, “Kentucky Bourbon”.
Even so, most of this drink is still made in Kentucky and folks from  that area would claim that it’s definitely the place where the best  bourbon comes from. Some Kentuckians even claim that the limestone in  the springwater from the area offers this bourbon a flavor distinguished  from the rest.
In 1964, the US Congress recognized bourbon as a “distinctive product  of the United States”. In fact, many trade agreements require that, to  be called bourbon, a whiskey must be made in the USA.
As bourbon whiskey began to grow in popularity, the tourism around  this drink began to increase in Kentucky. At one point, to keep up with  demand, some companies were planning to reduce the alcohol content of  their products, but backlash from customers forced them to reverse their  decision. Some companies have limited their supplies overseas to keep  up with demands in the US. That means that Kentucky still probably is  the best place to get bourbon!
While it is true that all bourbons are whiskey, not all whiskeys are  bourbon. And National Bourbon Day is certainly the best day to find out  more about this tasty beverage and enjoy a glass as well.
How to Celebrate National Bourbon Day
Celebrating National Bourbon Day is filled with fun, enjoyment and,  of course, access to different bourbons of the world! Try these  celebratory ideas for enjoying the day:
Try a Different Kind of Bourbon
Those who are new on the scene, welcome! It’s time to try bourbon of  any variety. For those who are enthusiasts and aficionados, National  Bourbon Day is the perfect time to try a new brand, flavor or vintage of  this special whiskey.
Knob’s Creek. Whether choosing the 9-year, or  the more sought-after 15-year, this brand is well known for its small  batch varieties that everyone seems to love.
Evan Williams Black Label. A great taste for a newcomer, this affordable brand brings 86 proof whiskey that is aged more than 5 years.
Jim Beam’s Old Grandad. Mid-range price and 114 proof is super spicy and appreciated by those who want to avoid the “hype” of fancier brands.
Join a National Bourbon Day Event
There are plenty of events and options for whiskey lovers and their  friends (even those who don’t know much about whiskey) to get in the  swing of things and enjoy this special day. Hotels and restaurants often  enter into the spirit of the occasion by organizing a dinner in honor  of Bourbon.

Visit the Bourbon Capital of the World  
Bardstown, Kentucky has been hailed by some to be the “Bourbon  Capital of the World”. Because of this, it may just be the perfect place  to visit for a National Bourbon Day celebration. With at least 10  different distilleries in the area, Bardstown offers an eclectic array  of bourbon options, including: Bardstown Bourbon Company, Maker’s Mark  Distillery, Jim Beam American Stillhouse ahd Heaven Hill Distillery.
National Bourbon Day events typically last over two or three days,  hosting tastings, demonstrations, and expert discussions. While in town,  don’t forget to stop by the Oscar Getz Museum of Whisky History, which is a special place for bourbon enthusiasts.
Those who can’t make it to Kentucky but want to join in from home can access the National Bourbon Day video library for recorded and virtual events.
Try Some New Bourbon Cocktail Recipes  
A great idea for celebrating the day is to entertain family and friends by trying out some old or new Bourbon cocktail recipes.
Bourbon Old Fashioned. A classic, of course, but always amazing. This drink includes bourbon, bitters, water, sugar, and a garnish of orange peel.
Bourbon Mint Julep.  Another Kentucky favorite known for its attachment to the horse race,  the Kentucky Derby, this refreshing drink simply calls for simple syrup,  mint sprigs, bourbon and crushed ice.
Bourbon Manhattan. Named  after the city that never sleeps, this iconic American drink just begs  to make with America’s Native Spirit! Mix bourbon whiskey, sweet  vermouth and bitters. Garnish with a maraschino cherry and orange peel.
Bourbon Sidecar. Normally  made with cognac, this American-ized version of the drink is just as  tasty. Shake together bourbon, triple sec and lemon juice with ice.  Garnish with an orange twist.
No matter what the plans are for the day, it’s easy to add a little  splash of whiskey to an evening meal to make National Bourbon Day a  night to remember!

For Spain's National Day, the King and Queen traditionally offer a reception to 2500 guests at the Royal Palace. For the first time this year, Princess Leonor joined her parents at the reception, where they first receive all the guests in the Throne Room in a ceremony known as "besamanos" or handkissing. In the third and fourth photos the Princess is greeting two very special guests, her fellow gentleman and lady cadets at the General Military Academy of Zaragoza.

"Noooo! I have to have a sip of bourbon today for National Bourbon Day!! I wanna try it!!" *kaito then makes the mistake of trying to grab the glass only to suddenly find himself staring up at the ceiling! kiryu had flipped him so quickly that the astronaut is completely stunned silent!!*
Enjoying a glass of bourbon with Kiryu sounded like a nice way to spend the evening; partially because to celebrate today, but in general, just always being more than happy to relax with the other.... At Kaito's tantrum, P can't help but chuckle, as he was about to say: "Now, now, Kaito... you know you can't have-" But trails off when he blinks in shock at Kaito being flipped over like that!! "Ah...! Kaito, are you okay-?!"

Today may have been a Holy day, but lord am I having some unholy thoughts about Simon and Johnny and their pretty little dancer who doesn't even know she's theirs. 18+ MDNI

Johnny convinces Simon to go to the ballet, Swan Lake specifically, whilst home on leave for the holidays. They spend Christmas and the new year together, even make the trip to London to celebrate with Price and Gaz--just in time for the English National Ballet's opening night of their annual Swan Lake production. There are billboards and advertisements for it everywhere in the city, and Johnny pesters Simon relentlessly, always pointing out the pretty little bird the ballet company chose for their advertising campaign. Always saying "C'mon Si, it's a classic. Just this once, just so I can say I've seen it."
And finally he gives in. Tells him to get tickets and make the arrangements so he'll stop nagging him about it. The night of the ballet they go to a swanky bar at an upscale hotel because Simon needs a bourbon if he's going to spend the rest of the evening with Johnny at the London Coliseum, theater packed with unfamiliar faces that care little to hide their staring or to mind his personal space. And the Bourbon is doing wonders to take the edge off, the burn of the liquor as it slides down his throat warming him from the inside out and blanketing his mind in a similar hazy warmth. It's done the job so well in fact that it takes his brain a moment to catch up with his senses when someone who isn't Johnny presses into the narrow space between them at the bar to flag down the bartender.
You wave them over and step up onto the foot rail to lean across the bar top, half-shouting your order over the noise of the other patrons. When the bartender hurries off to mix your drink you take a step back from the bar to give the two burly men their space but lose your footing when another patron bumps into you unknowingly from behind, and you find yourself nearly falling into Simon's lap.
Johnny has his arm around your waist to hold you up, and a steadying hand on your shoulder. "Nearly took a tumble. Are ye aw'right hen?"
You try to form a response, tell him you're sorry, that you're usually not this clumsy, but the words can't seem to find their way past your lips as your brain stumbles over the sudden warmth in the pit of your stomach and you're left staring up into his concerned eyes.
Another large, warm hand splays across your back between your shoulders and an even deeper voice rumbles from behind, "Are ya hurt, love?"
The bartender appears to deposit your drink, snapping your attention back into startling focus, and you quickly right yourself, pulling away from the embrace of the bright-eyed and sturdily built man you're currently chest to chest with. And if he is sturdy then the only way to describe the man who's hand still lingers at your back is massive, a veritable tower of muscle who's staring down at you with the same concerned pinch of his brows. You wonder at the reasoning for the black surgical mask, but now isn't the time to linger on thoughts of handsome strangers in crowded bars.
"I- I'm so sorry, I didn't mean- "
"No harm done, lass, no need to get yer feathers ruffled. Here," the dark-haired man assures you and kindly passes your drink to you from the bar, eyes traveling over you in appraisal as you take your drink with a shy 'thank you'. "Interesting choice of attire," he says with a gesture to your athletic shoes, yoga pants and oversized jumper.
"I uh... I'm not staying long. Just came for a little liquid courage," you explain.
"That's a shame. 'S not everyday a pretty dove falls into our lap."
Our? You're suddenly aware of the hand still on your back and you feel heat creeping up into your cheeks. Oh- oh. You take a step back as that heat creeps all the way to the tips of your ears. "I'm sure all the- um... I mean- surely you could have your pick of anyone here." He laughs at this and leans over to his... friend?
"Ye hear that Simon? Pretty little bird thinks we'd want just anyone." His friend doesn't say anything, gives no indication he's heard him except for the subtle tilt of his head and the upward cant of a brow as he turns round to see you better.
You're about to apologize, say you hadn't meant it like that, when there's a hand on your elbow and a familiar voice calling your name.
"Come on! We're going to be late for call time!"
You look between your friend, dressed similarly in athletic attire and shouldering a small duffel at her hip, and the two men at the bar. If you don't leave soon you are going to be late and that isn't how you want to start this night. You down the rest of your drink and stretch forward to slide your empty glass on the bar top between them. "I um, I'm gonna be late if I don't- I hope... I hope you two enjoy the rest of your night," you manage to say before your friend is pulling you away by your elbow, leading you towards the lobby.
Johnny watches with quiet amusement as your friend, wearing an identical jumper to yours, drags you away and ushers you out of the bar. He turns to Simon and finds him still watching the same direction you had left in, a hint of shared amusement reflected in his eyes as they meet Johnny’s.

Simon has a hand on Johnny’s back, guiding him through the crowd slowly dispersing from the theater. The ballet hadn’t been as bad as he’d thought it would be. He’d actually quite enjoyed the storytelling of it all and lamented that they hadn’t been able to see the orchestra in the pit. He’d have liked to have been able to watch the musicians, to see how they also moved in time with the music. And though he had certainly never seen the show before, not even on video, he couldn’t ignore the feeling that something about it had felt… familiar. Especially when he paid more attention to Odette.
“I dunno how they move like that, it doesnae seem natural,” Johnny rambles as the two of them make their way through the house doors. “I can barely get my leg up and over the hurdles for PT. Cannae imagine gettin it to go above my head, that looks bloody painful-”
Johnny stops speaking abruptly and comes to a halt beside Simon, nearly causing a collision with the older couple behind them. Just as quickly as he’d brought them to a halt he was moving again, but not towards the exit. He was pulling Simon towards a small crowd gathered near the promotional display for the show.
“Johnny, what- where are you going?”
He doesn’t answer, just keeps pulling Simon through throngs of people, shouldering a path forward until he reaches the edge of the small crowd. He lets go of Simon’s hand to move closer, and his brows furrow in confusion and growing irritation as people paying little attention to their surroundings bump into him.
A flash of movement above the heads of the crowd captures Simon's attention immediately, and his muscles tense, heart hammering in his chest, until he sees what exactly his attention has caught on. Feathers. White feathers. Johnny manages to shoulder his way to the front and Simon swallows his discomfort as he presses in behind him, but the feeling of unease gives way to something else when he see’s why Johnny’s dragged him here.
A dancer poses among the faux scenery, a small-scale recreation of the lake, wearing large, white wings, and smiling for pictures with small children. When the dancer changes position for another photo with another family, Simon sucks in a breath as he glimpses their face—your face.
The children smile and their parents take a few too many photos before scampering off to allow the next family their turn, and you shift from your pose, perched up on your toes with a leg high in the air behind you, akin to a swans tail, back down on two legs again and turn to greet the next family. Your eyes widen, and recognition flashes over your face when you have to look up at Johnny and Simon.
“Hello, little bird.”

My deep dark desire for a distillery au wherein each force is a competing distillery and you yeet an expert taster reader in there who is in charge of judging each whisky and ranking them. Either they are pulling out all the stops on your tour and treating you like a princess or doing the opposite and threatening you to rank them the highest :')
Mhairi, I am the worse person to ask about whiskey, my parents have delicious smelling ones, fruity and spicy ones, but taste wise? I gag like there’s no tomorrow, especially gin!! I hate gin. The only thing I can stomach so far is sweet, coffee and cream flavoured Baileys Irish Cream. (I know there’s Irish whiskey in it, but it’s only 17% compared to the 40% of any other whiskeys)
Eau De Vie Cw: Alcohol drinking, whiskey taste, tell me if I missed any.
Whisky had always been your favourite, your little secret that you shared with your closest friends alone —your penchent for judging whiskeys and bourbons alone, managing to include rum and brandy in rare occasions. So when you were approached by a known figure in the Whiskey industry that acted as the face for many distilleries across the world, you couldn’t turn down the offer when you were given so much in a simple deal.
You were responsible to drink and rank many popular brands by taste and smell alone, the only person delegated to become the judge. You were given the privilege of taking home a bottle of each brand after this competition, another reason to accept it. So you signed the contract without a second of hesitation, shaking her hand to conclude the deal before she left you squirming with excitement in your office home.
You were flown from your city to a calm part of the Scottish countryside, a chalet overlooking the Scottish highlands and its green beauty. This was the quaint house you would temporarily live in with the rest of the team orchestrating this friendly competition, leaving the connecting house up the cliff side to the different distilleries. From what you’ve heard, Kate Laswell - Kate you called her after a few meetings that had fully bloomed into a friendship of alcohol connoissoir - the participating teams were the British company 141 - who in coalition to Chimera and the ULF - would represent their alliance, the American Shadows, the multi-national KorTac and the Russian brewery Konni. They were all popular brands distilling whiskey and brandy in their own countries, creating a plethora of tastes and sensations that would explode on your tongue after a few sips.
You were ecstatic, your mouth salivating at the simple thought of tasting the finest whiskeys from around the world, but you had a few days to rest and tour the side of Scotland you were shipped to. What you expected to be calm and mild-mannered men and women from their side of the world to meet and eat with refined etiquette, was shattered the second you peered through the door after walking down the connecting path from your chalet to their house.
They were loud, rambunctious in the very sense of it, loud and jovial, hurling insults and hissing out jeers at one another. It was a dogfight between brewers, like cats and dogs. You felt like a stranger, gawking at the group hurling words at one another until it all stopped, the open living room falling in silence when they heard you drop your bag on the polished wood. You’ve never seen humans move so fast until the second after the silence, scrambling to clean the room up and wooing you with their compliments and sweet pleasantries to appease you.
They gave you a tour of the house, the rich wine cellar that was open to you whenever you wanted a drink, the wooden patio that had it’s own lounge and bar, and the various rooms in the mansion-like chalet. They all vied for your attention, ripping one another’s throat to have a second of your attention, kissing up to you with sweet compliments and even sweeter praises.
The Brits - well, three English and one Scott - were a good mix of mature and zealousness, low voices and near-overwhelming figures with their broad shoulders and stocky mass. They came with other people to represent their company: Farah and her devoted Alex from ULF, and the crude Nikolai and Krueger from Chimera.
The Shadows were American, the most American you’ve ever seen, energetic and determined to win you over, and the CEO, a man with a southern accent and a seductive smirk, swiping you off your feet with pet names that made you fluster.
KorTac had as many accents as they had people of different countries, both men and women skilled in multiple languages and conversing so fluently that you started to question if you were on the same planet.
Konni was rough on the edges, their leading figure as scheming as he was gentlemanly, his thin lips letting out the most vicious praises to have you squirming under his dark gaze and unmoving determination for the win.
Days later, you met them at the compound farther down the road, away from the beauty of the coast and cliff, a long table exposing their finest to you. Poured in a cups, one with ice and another without, they were left for you to decide which would win the prize for both straight and on the rocks. Today was the day you would nominate one as the best, standing higher than everyone else without bias despite the times they rendered you a flustered mess and made you unendingly grateful for their help.
Your pallet exploded with flavour every time you sipped on a different brand, eyes rolling to the back of your head with the deliciousness of every bottle. 141 brought three bottles of their aged whiskey: a smoky Scotch Whisky made in the same Highlands you were tasting it, the bitter spiciness of rye whiskey from the American branch of the ULF - credits to Alex for introducing it - and the woody and fruity aroma of Chimera’s whiskey. Shadows had brought - unsurprisingly - their most popular types of whiskey to the table: Bourbon made in their own distillery in Kentucky, a sweet and mellow sub-type of their first one and the smooth flavour of their wheat whiskey. KorTac had a large variety to it’s collection: a floral tasting whiskey that outmatched Hibiki Harmony, a nutty sensation of a bottle made in Ireland and the rich and peaty on of a danish-made bottle. And finally, three Russian bottles from the biggest distillery in Russia: a sweet and smoky bottle, a second one with rich malt and honey, and a third focusing on aroma with it’s spicy odour and fruity taste.
They were all so delicious, if you had these bottles when you working at the bar, mixing concoctions for paying clients, you would’ve been overjoyed, but those days were long gone, your priority standing elsewhere than fulfilling your dream. Truthfully, you didn’t know who to give the medal, the flavours so vast and unique. Perhaps they wouldn’t mind if you took a second or third sip just to be sure.

Bourbon definitely originated in the US state of Kentucky, sometime in the 1700s, before it even had acquired its official name. The name seems to be a nod to the French Bourbon Dynasty, and possibly was in honor of Bourbon County, an area of Kentucky that was known for its corn growing.
While some people think that bourbon must be made in Kentucky (like cognac must be made in a certain region of France) that’s not actually true. It simply needs to be distilled and aged in the state in order to be given the special name, “Kentucky Bourbon”.
Even so, most of this drink is still made in Kentucky and folks from that area would claim that it’s definitely the place where the best bourbon comes from. Some Kentuckians even claim that the limestone in the springwater from the area offers this bourbon a flavor distinguished from the rest.
In 1964, the US Congress recognized bourbon as a “distinctive product of the United States”. In fact, many trade agreements require that, to be called bourbon, a whiskey must be made in the USA.
As bourbon whiskey began to grow in popularity, the tourism around this drink began to increase in Kentucky. At one point, to keep up with demand, some companies were planning to reduce the alcohol content of their products, but backlash from customers forced them to reverse their decision. Some companies have limited their supplies overseas to keep up with demands in the US. That means that Kentucky still probably is the best place to get bourbon!
While it is true that all bourbons are whiskey, not all whiskeys are bourbon. And National Bourbon Day is certainly the best day to find out more about this tasty beverage and enjoy a glass as well.

With at least 10 different distilleries in the area, Bardstown offers an eclectic array of bourbon options, including: Bardstown Bourbon Company, Maker’s Mark Distillery, Jim Beam American Stillhouse ahd Heaven Hill Distillery.
National Bourbon Day events typically last over two or three days, hosting tastings, demonstrations, and expert discussions. While in town, don’t forget to stop by the Oscar Getz Museum of Whisky History, which is a special place for bourbon enthusiasts.
