I listen to Jack Saunders Future Artists on Radio 1 all the time when I have a moment free or driving somewhere.

The Top2000 voting week has started so that means it's time for my yearly call to vote for Oya Lélé by K3 in the Top2000, Spotify might ignore K3 in their wrapped lists but that doesn't mean the Top2000 should too!

Because I hope people will spread this around (and I decided to blaze it), some further clarification below the cut:

Questions I can imagine people are asking:

What is the Top2000?

The Top2000 is a list of the 2000 best songs ever according to the Dutch public/listeners of NPO radio 2/anyone who wants to vote. It has been going since this millennium and is always broadcast from Christmas to New Year's Eve, with the top song being played just before midnight. (The top song has been Bohemian Rhapsody in 18 of the 23 editions). See Wikipedia for more information

What is K3?

K3 is a Belgian(/part Dutch since 2009) girl band aimed at children, they have some very good songs in my opinion, but they have never been in the Top2000 which I think is a crime, because some songs are definitely better or at least as good than some songs that have made the list (looking at Normaal and the Pokemon theme song). Also I'm pretty sure most Dutch (and Flemish) people will be able to sing along to at least 1 K3 song.

Why Oya Lélé?

Because we need to all vote for one song to make a chance, and I think Oya Lélé might be the most `K3' song of all. Other songs I considered are Alle Kleuren and Heyah Mama, but in the end I think Oya Lélé makes a bigger chance. It's also the K3 song that stayed in the Dutch top 40 the longest. (Though the Alle Kleuren album was a bigger success tbh) In the end it's mainly because I can only campaign for one song, and Oya Lélé just screams K3 to me. (And newer 'very much K3' songs like 10000 luchtballonnen and Mamasé make less chance because people have less nostalgia for them.

What is this thing about Spotify?

For 2 years in a row now Spotify has not shown any K3 song in my wrapped playlist, even though I requested my data last year and K3 was by far my most popular artist. I am not the only person this happened to (see this tweet for example) even this year after I contacted customer service about it last year (it was a whole project). They did not seem to understand my problem, so I will have to do it again once I got my data from this year.

Okay so how do I vote?

You can vote here! It's all in Dutch obviously but you do not have to be Dutch in order to vote and I think it's all pretty clear. You must vote for 5 songs minimum and 35 maximum. Oya Lélé is not a preset option in the list, but you can manually add it after you searched for it. Fill in K3 in the first field and Oya Lélé in the second field. If you need further inspiration for what to vote for Heyah Mama is somehow a preset option, and you can just browse the list.

"Chewing gum" "On your head"

Two more delights from my greatest singles of the 21st century.

"Chewing gum" - Annie

The internet revolutionised how we discovered music. John Sakamoto's Anti-Hit List was a reliable source of great new music, expertly curated by a reliable tastemaker, put out of business when the Toronto Star made cuts in 2009. Record of the Day - and its predecessor The Tip Sheet - explain what the music industry want to push. There are interesting public radio stations WFUV and KCRW, more recently CBC Music and NPO 3fm.

But nothing beats the personal recommendation, the post written by a fan who loves what they're hearing. A long-lost Scandipop blog tipped us off about this one, and I'm really glad they did.

Back to 2004, when electro-pop was at its most thrilling. Richard X from Xenomania wrote a confident, swaggering pop tune, sung by Annie about her many useless exes. The chorus line gets stuck in one's head: "you think you're chocolate but you're chewing gum", a diss to anyone. The album, Anniemal, had spectacular follow-up "Heartbeat", and 1999's "The greatest hit".

In my personal top ten of the decade, but (sigh) the top five only allows five entries, and this doesn't quite get the bonus mark. Video is from T4's Popworld, which was another fine way to discover great music.

"On your head" - Tiffany Page

Grunge never quite died, it just came back in unexpected ways. Tiffany Page was brought up on a diet of country music and Hole; her songs combine the best of both genres, relentless and verbose.

"On your head" came out in early summer 2010, and made it to Radio 1's B-list. Her vocals were compared to Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders - soulful, smoky, sultry. Not that this made it a hit - into the top 40 at number 102, and straight out again.

And that's a desperate shame. Tiffany writes and sings and tells a whole story in the four minutes: the subject is near the end of his tether, confused and spiralling. Tiffany's song structure portrays this unsettled world in repeated phrases, culminating in a request for mercy.

The album "Walk Away Slow" appeared on Spotify a few years back. I fear that Tiffany had stopped making music by then.

I posted my second SOC fanfic yesterday and I have been gauging the response of this one vs the last. Acknowledging that I have a sample size of two and making some assumptions based on time and date of launch, word count, and changes in POV, I have come to the following conclusion:

The Six of Crows fandom greatly prefers stories involving the main character performing a grisly murder and does not prefer noodling about the realities of launching an anti-human trafficking nonprofit in a modern day Ketterdam.

Which, okay. I can see that.

I’m still 100% going to keep writing about Inej’s anti-human trafficking NPO progress, but maybe I’ll try to work a few more grisly murders into the plots. Goodness knows, as an NPO professional myself, I’ve certainly fantasized about being able to solve problems with murder, so maybe this will be cathartic for everyone involved.

Old Gods of Appalachia continues to do a fascinating piece of storytelling, where the listener is introduced to something bone chillingly terrifying as the preamble and then introduces something that is significantly worse and scares the bejeezus out of the haint whom we have just gotten to know. It is both a brilliant way to introduce multiple types of creatures and also show the relative hierarchy of the things that go bump in the night.

My #1 post of 2022

I have finished Season 2 of @thesiltverses and I am deep in my feels about the nature of faith and how we incorporate it (or not) in our daily lives; the pervasive perniciousness of capitalist propaganda; how the only good cops aren’t cops anymore; the incredible storytelling at work to showcase a world that is both incredibly alien and yet entirely familiar; and how to write people who are Not Good in such a way as to make them extremely sympathetic and relatable. (There’s a longer maunder about the nature and relativity of good and evil in the context of worlds that have significantly different cosmologies, which I’m likely going to have a lot of feelings about later.)

Absolutely incredible work. If you are into horror radio dramas (and don’t mind a *lot* of body horror - like *a lot*), I 100% recommend. Please join me in this absolute obsession. Just cannot get over how good it is.

'Vader des gedichten' op de radio Jan van Veen overleden

De bekende radiopresentator Jan van Veen is na een kort ziekbed overleden. Dat heeft zijn familie vandaag bekendgemaakt. Van Veen werd 79 jaar.

Van Veen begon zijn loopbaan midden jaren zestig als dj bij Radio Veronica, waar hij later ook programmaleider werd. Hij presenteerde er programma's als De gouden discotheek, Hits uit zee en de Top 40. Een uit de hand gelopen grap waarbij Van Veen liefdesgedichten voorlas op de radio, leidde tot zakken vol gedichten van luisteraars waarna het programma Candlelight ontstond. Het programma was achtereenvolgens te horen bij Veronica, de Avro en vanaf 1991 bij Sky Radio.

Daarnaast leende hij zijn karakteristieke stemgeluid voor reclamespotjes en nam hij nummers op. Zo maakte hij met onder andere Patricia Paay en Willem Duyn een Nederlandstalige versie van hoorspel The war of the worlds van Jeff Wayne.

Candlelight Radio

Zijn warme en geruststellende stem creëerde een ontspannende en intieme sfeer. Luisteraars stemden vaak af op Candlelight voor een dosis nostalgie en om te genieten van de oprechte boodschappen en poëzie. Wanneer Van Veen zijn gedichten voordroeg, was steevast het nummer Greensleeves te horen. In 2009 werd hij benoemd tot lid in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau.

Candlelight stopte op 30 januari 2003, maar maakte twee jaar later een doorstart op Van Veens eigen zender, radiostation Candlelight Radio, omdat hij maar gedichten bleef ontvangen. Daarna stapte hij over naar 100%NL, waar hij zo’n tien jaar bleef hangen. Voor het laatst was de diskjockey te horen op EASY 95.5 FM, maar vanwege een zwakke gezondheid werd daar een punt achter gezet.

Van Veen overleed in zijn woonplaats Hilversum aan de gevolgen van ALS.

Bekende radiomakers reageren zondagavond bedroefd op het nieuws dat diskjockey Jan van Veen (79) is overleden. Op sociale media staan verschillende collega’s van Van Veen stil bij het verlies, waarbij het bekende en warme stemgeluid van de radiomaker vaak wordt genoemd. „De man met de mooiste stem van Nederland is niet meer.. Jan van Veen, Mister Candlelight: Rest In Peace”, zegt radiocolumnist en dj Patrick Kicken. Ook Ron Vergouwen, van onder meer de podcast Dit was de radio, herinnert zich Van Veen om zijn stem. „Oh nee! Een legendarische stem, de man achter een iconisch radioprogramma…”, schrijft hij.

Postzakken vol gedichten

Min of meer door toeval begon Van Veen - die naast radio-dj ook altijd textielhandelaar was - met het voorlezen van gedichten op de radio. Toen hij bij Radio Veronica werkte, stuurde een luisteraar een gedicht in. ,,Mijn technicus zei: lees het voor op de radio. Na dat ene gedicht zaten de postzakken vol met meer gedichten. De eerste teksten gingen vooral over heimelijke boodschappen, van scholieren onder elkaar die dan niet durfden te zeggen dat ze elkaar leuk vonden, dus dat maar deden via een gedicht’’, vertelde Van Veen in 2017 in het NPO Radio 1-programma Langs de lijn en omstreken. Hij was daar te gast met neerlandicus Kila van der Starre, die promoveerde op de Candlelight-gedichten.

Het programma was te horen bij onder meer Veronica, Radio 3, Sky Radio, 100% NL en vijf jaar geleden een maandje bij Omroep Max op NPO Radio 5. Van Veen kwam in conflict met omroepbaas Jan Slagter, waardoor de samenwerking al snel weer stopte. Wel bleef Candlelight te horen op Van Veens eigen internetkanaal.

Uitgerekend de man die duizenden Nederlanders ruim een halve eeuw in vervoering wist te brengen met zijn stem en hun eigen amateurgedichten op stemmige vioolmuziek, kon in de laatste weken van zijn leven zijn stem niet meer laten klinken. Omringd door zijn zoon, zijn vier zussen, zijn broer en zijn beste vrienden overleed Van Veen thuis.

Weergeven van verdriet en ellende

Voor anderen was Van Veen een held, zoals voor Olav Mol, F1-commentator van Grand Prix Radio. „Radioheld Jan van Veen is vandaag overleden; dé man achter Candlelight. Afgelopen jaar nog las hij een paar gedichten in onze podcast”, deelt Mol, die ook de nabestaanden van Van Veen sterkte wenst.

Waar het programma ook te horen was, het eerste nummer van de uitzending was steevast Can I get there by candlelight van David McWilliams. Onder de gedichten die Van Veen voordroeg was altijd Greensleeves te horen, in de uitvoering van een orkest onder leiding van de Italiaanse dirigent Mantovani.

,,Men vindt zich ook vaak in de tekst, ook al is het niet voor ze geschreven’’, verklaarde Van Veen op Radio 1 het succes van Candlelight. ,,Het weergeven van verdriet en ellende waarbij je denkt, verrek, ik heb precies hetzelfde meegemaakt. Om dit te bereiken moeten de gedichten simpel zijn. Anders is het moeilijk te begrijpen.”

De uitvaart van diskjockey en Candlelight-presentator vindt komende week in besloten kring plaats. Dat laat zijn familie maandag aan het ANP weten. Er komt geen grote herdenkingsbijeenkomst voor vaste fans en luisteraars van zijn programma.

2023年9月1日、関東大震災から100年、虐殺から100年

東京都/小池百合子による7年に渡る追悼拒否に加え、都の“人権部”が虐殺の歴史に関わる作品を検閲/弾圧し始めた……という最悪な所業。

今年はそこに更に、東京都がヘイト団体にお墨付きを与え、日本政府/岸田政権そのものが虐殺の歴史と記録を否定しだした。公権力による、歴史修正/公文書否認が、ゼノフォビアが、より一層、悪化している。

大手メディアも、今起きている“公人”“公権力”による差別扇動と歴史否定については……はっきり報じない/批判的に触れない媒体ばかりであるのが（きちんと報じているメディアもあるが、やはり少数派で、WEBのみに留まったりする傾向がある）ゾッとする。その不均衡に、沈黙に、怒りしかない。しんどい。
