When God himself informs you your contract has been passed on to a third party, you might wonder where you're headed.

My regiment of angels waved me off. A man with a split lip and holy glow, he said, this was out of our hands, sir. We'll try to follow you. Sir.

The first few weeks I was at the asylum, I got taken off all my pills. Mount Massive was not Heaven. Divine figures shrunk back into shrinks. They paid special care to the rough chop of scar tissue spread across my face. I was a corpse laid fresh on an anthill.

The thing is, when you come off a cocktail of benzos and antipsychotics and mood stabilizers and SSRIs meant to keep you from blowing up the World Trade Center, you have withdrawals. The thing is, it was very apparent that is what the doctors ordered.

The Engine.

I was out of my gourd, when they primed me for it. The therapy, you'd think they'd never seen a car crash before. I could hear all the other men screaming. The sensation, it was insomnia before support groups all over again.

I know what you want. On the way back to my cell, I talked.

"Do you?"

You want him back.

"Do we, or do you?" My false father figure in all his hazmat glory liked to lead his questions.

Of course I want him back. I'd watch their Z-list snuff films twenty four seven if it meant he'd come back.

Why does Murkoff want Tyler?

My shrink, he said, "Have you considered, what is amazing about Tyler is not him, but the fact that you could make him?"

So I learned, this was a Jesus sort of thing. Or maybe God. I told my shrink, you can't teach God anything.

The Engine.

That was a bit more like lye. My keepers, they wanted Tyler. They wanted me pissing on the Blarney Stone. They wanted my palace of many doors. My inner cave. They wanted what my mind could do, they wanted me to craft them their very own God.

The Engine showed me blond hair. Red leather. Chipped teeth.

Oh, my compliance was a scientist's wet dream.

It's only natural that when Tyler returned, everything collapsed like the soggy wood of the mansion under monkey feet.

Like a schoolgirl sold on love at first sight, I want to believe I felt it when he crawled back inside my head and out the door of my subconscious. In truth, I spent the first night of the riot hidden away, under my bed. Awake. The howls I heard. I knew it'd been too long since I'd been to fight club. I'd die like a fool.

Tyler, though.

When I wake up, I'm in an office. In a closet, really. The desk arranged just like the one I woke up at with gasoline on my hands.

Rejoice.

Tyler, I know he keeps coming around, because the hulking, mutated, beaten men I pass by start nodding at me. I know because I wake up with badly done stitches. I know because I'm not seeing him, and he's all the more real since I'm not.

I wonder what the other patients think. Skinny guys fight til they're burger. I wonder if Tyler's siren call works as well in a land already past bottom.

I wake up in different rooms. My cell. That office. A kitchen, with a dead man laid out, head inside a microwave. Tyler left a sticky note on him.

You are what you eat!

The bodies around tell the story. The flesh that speaks.

When the carcass is gone, we stop moving. The burners are clear and the fridge is full of glycerin.

Tyler Durden, creature of habit.

I make no habit of roaming. These men, their eyes are open. They know I'm Tyler. They know I'm his. These things are different. Property, ownership. Things that can be stolen.

I like to fall asleep to the caterwauls of all these lost apes.

The prodigal son returns, finally, when the church burns. You know what they say, Hell is empty, all the devils are here.

Tyler, I say.

He looks at me. It's so easy to be pinned like a worm under a dissecting microscope. I try to imagine him with his brains blown out. With the massacre of a face I have.

Tyler.

"And so Adam was sent from the garden," Tyler says. "And so, the devil ran amuk."

He looks like he's thriving.

The next man I see calls me sir.

Taxonomy for animals in hyrule (or things that would be considered animals).

For the general chart:

I didn't always include all the variations of an animal.

Only naturally occurring, biological things are included. Nothing that was artificially constructed.

Some minor spirits are included, but only a few. For most of the spirits I don't think they would follow the laws of biology.

I think chuchus are a very primitive form of animal. Possibly a cnidarian or a closely related group?

Likelikes are type of worm.

I know that the sticky lizards literally have lizard in the name but I will always see them as a sort of salamander.

I'm not sure if gleeoks should even count as tetropods. I'm also not sure if the dragons should even be considered naturally occurring. However, if I were to assign them a place I would put them in a group that is alongside, but separate from, dinosaurs and crocodilians . The leviathans might also fall into this group.

For fish:

I'm not sure about the glowing cave fish, since they don't say what type of fish it is and I know basically nothing about fish taxonomy. I've put it in percomorpha since it's the largest group of fish.

Since the zora can breath water and air I assume they're related to lung fish.

For insects:

I've seen several headcanons about what the gibdo are. In this case I'm interpreting them either as a humanoid insect or as a insect that controls corpses.

I don't think deep fireflies are fireflies at all. I think they are distantly related to all other insects.

For birds:

I didn't include the many varieties of sparrows and pigeons. I also didn't include the two types of heron and two types of seagull. There is no much to say about them other than the fact that they're very closely related species or sub-species.

I don't think the rito are related to the rito from wind waker. Instead, I think that the term 'rito' is used for any bird-like humanoid in the Zelda universe. I'm not too certain about how to classify the rito. In fact, I think it might be possible that there are several unrelated species that are all called the rito.

For mammals:

There are a few animals whose existence is implied but never shown: these are monkeys, elephants, and camels.

Blupees are on here because they're described as rabbit like, but I personally would consider them more spirit than animal.

I put here that dogs came from Maraudo wolves, but it might be possible that dogs were domesticated from a different species of wolf found outside of Hyrule.

I'm not really sure about moldugas. I put that they're related to sand seals, but I can't be very sure. I don't even know if moldugas are mammals.

I know that the internet has apparently decided that the zonai are goat-adjacent, but I never saw it that way. I refuse to say they're an ungulate when they don't even have anything resembling hooves. For now I have tentatively put them in carnivora.

For rock creatures:

I think all the 'rock based creatures' form a biosphere that is completely unrelated to the normal biosphere. This would mean that hyrule has no universal common ancestor. Life arose independently at least twice.

I know that the dondons appear in the middle of the 'mammal section' of the compendium, but I am ignoring it.

Other stuff:

I didn't include lynels because I have no idea what's going on with them. They're definitely mammals (but again, technically a hexapod). But I have no idea how to classify them further.

I also didn't include wizzrobes because I have absolutely no idea what's going on with them.

Have you ever thought about how weird Xuan’s abilities are? Like, I could be missing something, but they don’t see very connected to the monkey king? He’s got the cloud and staff, and maybe even the super eyes. but the glowing orbs? The paper explosions? What’s up with those? Even Yun got clones, but Xuan just? Goes boom? Idk maybe I’m overthinking, but it’s been bugging me

Well, be bugged no longer! Tang Xuan’s move set and appearance are all connected to Sun Wukong and make sense. HaHA! @justanotherwanderingone, you do NOT know the can of worms you just unleashed with your ask :’D I already recognised most of the connections listed below, but you gave me the wonderful opportunity to research even more!! >:D Prepare for an essay! I was going to devote tonight to writing up about Li Ling, but this was way more fun!

I’m going to list out everything that I’ve noticed that is connected to SWK, the Victorious Fighting Buddha, below, in no particular order.

Tang Xuan’s glowing eyes during his third move: SWK, after being refined in Lao Tzu’s crucible (sometimes referred to as simply a furnace, but containing the 8-way trigram), gained the ability to perceive evil no matter the form it takes by activating Fiery Eyes, Golden Gaze (火眼金睛 (Pinyin: huǒ yǎn jīn jīng)). Fun fact: SWK was refined (as in, made tougher, more invulnerable) because he is made of stone. Also, he hid in a corner where the flame was the weakest.

Tang Xuan’s long hair: Monkey tail. SWK, no matter the form he takes, will always have his tail present. Same deal with Tang Yun, tis a monkey tail.

Tang Xuan’s jacket: Represents the golden chainmail armour SWK threatened for was gifted from the Dragon Kings. Bonus, the lotus on the jacket is another reference to SWK’s Buddhahood as lotus flowers are a symbol of Buddhism

Tang Xuan’s floating orbs: I have three theories for this one.

First, my least favourite but can see the justification: It’s a nod to Dragon Ball, as most Western audiences are introduced to Sun Wukong, known in Japanese as Son Goku, through this series. The Dragon Balls do not exist in the mythos, but using that as a reference doesn’t seem to be too far of a stretch.

Second, the one I’m leaning towards the most although am iffy about it: They’re symbolic malas, or prayer beads. SWK is a buddha and thus would, theoretically, partake in Buddhist prayer, chants, and other forms of ritual. Lots of artists include large, sometimes glowing-gold, malas around his neck in their depictions of him. However, I am iffy because there are only 6-7 orbs ever shown with Tang Xuan (6 in his story art, 7 on his album art) while malas tend to keep their bead count divisible by 9. If you come across any that are smaller than 18, these are most likely intended to be worn as bracelets. The malas don't actually represent anything (usually, although some will be made with specific materials or anointed with oils and perfumes to be used in different situations), but are used to keep count during mantra repition.

Third, the one I really want it to be and am heavily biased with: The 7 (I’m sticking to this being the correct number of) orbs represent the 7 ways Sun Wukong achieved immortality before becoming a buddha. This one fits the nicest, though I have to question why glowing orbs specifically?

Extra: I briefly contemplated if they were chakras, but waved it off as not likely. 1) They aren’t colour-coded, 2) Chakras are practised in Hinduism, and 3) balancing his chakras is not something SWK is ever seen needing to do.

Tang Xuan’s move set:

Righteous Anger- Self-explanatory, but to refresh- SWK, before he received the golden headband of restraint, was quick to anger and take offense at the drop of a pin.

Enchanting Dream and Shattering Dream- I’m shocked/impressed? Because this seems to be a call to the Supplementary side story (a FANFIC), written later by Dong Yue, where SWK is afflicted with Desire for the first time and becomes susceptible to a dream curse. In the dream, he lives in an alternate reality and tries to figure out what is why he is there and how to return to his timeline. Only by shattering the dream during a battle does he escape in time to kill the one who cursed him. The names, specifically, seem to be the reference, while the actual abilities reference something else. Fun fact: In this fanfic side story, SWK had to cross-dress for a bit as a consort to the emperor. :D

Tang Xuan’s abilities:

Creating a shield- SWK has a power that lets him draw a circle around himself (literally, DRAW IT, think Spongebob’s Sea Bear tactic) and it is completely impassable.

Death, Scorch, Shackle Enchantments- The three ways SWK was pseudo defeated. 1) His soul was captured and brought to the World of Darkness due to his time on Earth being up. This also jump-started his strive to become super immortal because the only thing SWK feared was death. 2) After eating Lao Tzu’s immortality pills, he was put into the crucible to burn in an attempt to distil him and, thus, get back into the immortality pills. 3) After causing all sorts of Havoc (the Immortality x3 fiasco) and being undefeated by the many heavenly beings under the Jade Emperor’s jurisdiction (Nezha being one of those beings!), the Buddha himself was called upon and, after making a bet with SWK (who lost), shackled him under a mountain for 500 years (until Tang Sanzang frees him in order to take him on as a companion).

The Paper Talisman: 1) In Buddhism, these are called Sutras. Sutras are also the holy texts that Buddhists chant and meditate on, and are what Sanzang and Crew were on a quest for. 2) When the Buddha trapped SWK underneath the mountain, he also wrote an Om Mani Padme Um mantra on a sutra (paper talisman) and slapped it onto the mountain to keep him bound in position. It sort of makes sense that Tang Xuan would use it to inflict the debuffs while under the three enchantments.

Elements: Why they focused on making Tang Xuan fire-y, I’m unsure as SWK has more control over the wind than he does fire (he is just immune to fire). I think, partially, it’s more of an aesthetic reason to make him go boom so that we can tie the enchantments to a physical, powerhouse move.

And there you have it! Everything I could currently dig up that matches with Tang Xuan’s character appearance and/or abilities! I think, what doesn’t make it specifically clear is that, other than being a monkey and his staff, SWK doesn’t have an iconic appearance or visual ability/power, that makes him instantly recognisable. But, he has so many abilities and has done so much in his lifetime, that Lillithgames just had to rely on us recognising the references from his story :D I hope this settles your mind and makes you appreciate just how much thought went into Tang Xuan’s character!

Control (an ML Fanfic) Chapter 2

CW: Sentipeople, child abuse, bullying.

Marinette has run home with Chloé's amok. but... what does she do with it? She turns to Tikki for help, but in the end, the choice is hers. With much-needed support she stumbles towards an answer, but first she needs to know more...

"Marinette, what's going on?" Tikki's voice piped up from where she had finally freed herself from Marinette's purse.

Oh no, I never let her out. Marinette rolled to the edge of her bed, still a blanket burrito, and peeked down. "I'm sorry, Tikki."

The kwami flew up to perch beside her on the bed. "That doesn't answer my question."

Marinette stuck her hand out, presenting her be-ringed finger. "It's this…"

Tikki examined the golden band before looking up with worry lining her cherubic face. "It's very pretty?"

Marinette withdrew her hand and pulled her head back in the blanket too. "It's an amok."

"It is? Where is the sentimonster? Did Monarch attack? Did something happen and I don't remember?"

Her kwami's little panic moment was oddly reassuring. Marinette mumbled against her cotton shield. "No, no attack Tikki. I just found out. I know where it is. I came home to talk to you because I got scared. I got to thinking though, I'm sorry."

Tikki's small paws tried to worm their way into the blanket. She struggled to poke her head in, bringing the light pink glow with her. "Well, if you know where it is, there's no reason to be scared! Ladybug can take care of it. You've purified amoks plenty of times before."

Marinette cringed until she was a ball. "I didn't know!"

"Marinette?"

Marinette burst from her shell. "It's a person, Tikki! Not a lollipop, or a giant eye, or an icky floating leech! It's a person. She might be the worst person I've ever known, but she's a person. Are they all people? What have I been doing? What else could I do? What do you do when a giant monkey is throwing exploding bananas in downtown Paris?"

She pulled her hair until the physical pain matched the frustration and self doubt she couldn't vent. Battles flashed before her eyes; some hard, some trivial. Each feather that floated was now a 'what if?' 'what if?' 'what if?'

Tikki's slight weight settled on her shoulder and hugged her cheek, "Marinette, Marinette! Calm down, it's okay. Just tell me what happened, and we'll find a way through this."

The combination of pain and Tikki's voice both combined to lure Marinette out of her spiral. She slumped, exhausted. Her thumb continued to spin the ring. A corner of her mind whispered, I wonder what I would see if I looked now.

Marinette dug her nails into her palm until the whisper went away. She reached up to gently pet Tikki between the antennae; she needed the contact. Okay, where to begin. "Someone else found it, they didn't know what it was. I didn't know what it was. I found out accidently. But, now I know…"

Marinette shrugged helplessly. From her past, anger surged, and she threw her head back.

"Ugh! It's not fair! I'm not even allowed to hate the worst person ever." She held up the ring again. "What if she was made that way? What if this is what someone wants? She can't just get out of everything she's done by being a sentimonster!"

Tikki was hovering nervously. Marinette knew she probably sounded unhinged. She felt unhinged. This seemed like a fair excuse to be.

Tikki asked sensibly, "Who, Marinette?"

Marinette held out her hand in limp-wristed parody and singsonged, "Chlo-é, Bourgeois. The literal worst person in all of Paris, after Monarch. A stupid, spoiled, selfish little princess who made my life a living hell!"

She slipped the ring off her hand and held it up between two fingers.

"And, here she is. Right here, everything about her. Somebody made her."

Marinette was stuck somewhere between giggling and crying. She wanted to do both but neither felt right. Why couldn't it have been someone nice? Who makes something like Chloé?

That answer came quickly. Chloé was a mini-Audrey in every way. Did Audrey make her? Did someone else make her for Audrey? Is she working for the Monarch? Did André make her for Audrey? Is he working for the Monarch? Both made too much sense, but also didn’t. None of this made sense.

Marinette was inches away from pulling her hair again when Tikki spoke up, “What are you going to do, Marinette?”

Marinette did laugh at that, and if Tikki’s expression was anything to go by, it sounded every bit as bad as it felt. She stuffed the ring back on her finger. “That’s what I was going to ask you Tikki. What should I do?”

“What do you mean?” Tikki settled on Marinette’s knee and Marinette was reminded just how much the kwamis related to things differently than humans did at times.

Marinette held the ring to her chest, fingers still turning it. “It’s- She’s a person, Tikki.”

Sentibug flashed before her eyes again. It was different… right? It had been troubling, but Marinette had convinced herself: Sentibug wasn’t real. Marinette was the real Ladybug. Sentibug was just a good imitation. Sitting there now, with someone else’s amok in her hands, Marinette began to see the fragile shield of denial for what it had been.

Marinette whispered, mind still far off, “Should I use it? I have already, accidentally. I made her do things. I could make her do anything. I could make her stop doing anything.”

Tikki tilted her head. “That sounds like a way to get her to stop being a bully to everyone.”

Twist. Twist. Twist. The last several years flashed before Marinette’s eyes. “If I do that though, what’s left? It’s just a Chloé doll, and I’m pulling the strings. Does she even exist? Do I become responsible for everything she does and doesn’t do? It’s not-”

Marinette dropped her hands into her lap, toying with the ring.

“It’s not like I haven’t dreamed of it. I mean, can you imagine being a little kid? A magical ring that turns all the tables, that gives you the chance to make your bully the one who has to do what you say.”

Marinette held her hand up, turning it to catch light on the ring, “I could be the real Queen Bee myself. ‘Chloé do this. Chloé do that. Chloé, stand on your head.’ People would laugh.”

Marinette dropped her hand, then hugged herself as more memories made themselves known.

“I’ve heard them laugh.”

Tikki flew over to land on Marinette’s hand. “You’re not a bully, Marinette.”

Marinette smiled down at her little friend. “That part, I know Tikki. That’s why I can’t just use it for whatever. That’s why I’m sitting here wishing I’d never found this thing instead of sitting in class, rewriting her personality one command at a time.”

Tikki’s antennae drooped. She was quiet for a moment then perked. “You could give it to her?”

Marinette chewed on her lip. “Would she take me seriously? Should I try as Ladybug? She hates Ladybug now… well maybe not anymore.  Should I undo that? Can she take care of it? Does she really understand what it means? How many people would, if you handed them something and said, ‘Here’s your life and your free will, keep it safe.’?”

Tikki looked down again. “So, what are you going to do?”

Marinette sighed. “I was hoping you could tell me. Master Fu didn’t tell me about anything like this, and I’m thinking now that I’ve been handling sentimonsters wrong from the start.”

Tikki floated up, such a darling look of concentration on her face that Marinette reached up to hug her, but Tikki floated out of her grasp.  She finally snapped out of it and gave Marinette a very serious look as she spoke, “What I can tell you, that you might not already be telling yourself, is that you have time. If Chloé really is a sentimonster, she’s been around for years. That means it’s not some new plot. Whoever made her might have even lost her amok and not know it's still around. You can give yourself time to consider what you want to do, instead of stressing yourself out trying to solve it all right now.”

Marinette thought about that. She thought about what Zoé said. Covered in Dust. A tiny fraction of the tension eased. She smiled, “Thanks, Tikki. I needed to hear that.”

Her Kwami flew back in and hugged against Marinette’s shoulder. “Anytime, Guardian!”

Marinette patted her gently. “Is there anything else you know about Sentimonsters, Tikki? Is there like a… factory reset? Can I undo what I did to her? What about what someone else might have done? Can I just tell her to be her own person from now on?”

Tikki rubbed her little paws together uncertainly. “I’m not Duusu, but I don’t think it works that way.” She thought again before answering, “It’s like… you can’t unmake something. You can make something, and you can destroy it, but you can’t erase it having been made. Every change you make, even if it's trying to put things back where they were, will actually be creating something new.”

Marinette sighed and flopped onto her back. “I was afraid of that.”

She heard her father’s booming voice from below, calling to see if she felt well enough for food. Suddenly aware of her hunger, Marinette scooted out of bed and headed downstairs. Her thumb never stopped. Twist. Twist. Twist.

Later that evening, her homework still sat undone. It wasn't hard, but she couldn't focus. The ring was always there, always slightly warm. She'd tried taking it off but then it just sat there, leaden on her desk and in her head. She even closed it in a drawer. That lasted mere seconds. Out of sight, anything could happen.

Marinette laid on her divan, hand held up to the ceiling and mind full of questions. It's not even mine! Is this what it would feel like if it was? Would it be worse? What am I supposed to do? How did this even happen? I don't know enough.

As if in response to her musings the room around her began to grow fuzzy. She felt it happening, but for once in her life just let go and let it happen.

Quiet was the first thing she noticed. It was deathly quiet. She was a rider this time, less in control. She could feel Chloé there, separate this time, but knew should could just reach out and-

Chloé pulled one of her forelocks and winced. Annoyance and confusion rippled across the space her mind occupied within Marinette's. Marinette felt a little guilty for the pettiness, but a tiny bit of selfish relief too.

She began to feel things more solidly. It was still quiet. So totally alien, growing up downtown over a busy bakery. Chloé's room came into focus, cavernous. Marinette paused -was that her feeling or Chloé's?- could she really find out what the other girl thought, felt, how she worked?

Chloé was still scrolling on her phone, did she do anything else? Marinette tried something gentle, not too intrusive she hoped: do something else.

Her vision shifted. Chloé stood and looked around. There was the balcony, the TV, room service, closets full of clothing and cosmetics to dive in and explore. Chloé didn't move. Marinette felt her own curiosity being swallowed up by… anxiety?

The other girl's thoughts circled her. Which is the right thing to do? Her mother's face leered down at her, disembodied and critical. Ridiculous. She felt sick to her stomach. Ladybug! Ladybug would make it better. She would make it make sense. She loved Ladybug.

Marinette was awash, the feelings were blending. A pang of guilt over Chloé’s newly rekindled love for Ladybug wasn’t enough to dissuade her. She felt pulled but compelled to see this through. Chloé was moving. The view swireled by in a rush. She threw open a closet and dug through designer clothes, throwing them aside wholesale until she found a carefully wrapped package buried deep. 

Marinette recognized the contents through the clear plastic just as a wave of relief slammed into her. Polkadots. It was her Ladybug outfit.

She tore open the packaging, no wait, Chloé did. Marinette was watching the actions but feeling what they sparked. She held up the costume -joy. She ran to her mirrors, shedding clothing as she went. She had one arm already in a sleeve when the face and voice returned. Marinette was sure Chloé was alone, but she heard the words clear as day. "Look at you. Really Calorie, polkadots? You're hideous, and fired too."

Marinette's anxiety spiked. She could feel her hearts thudding in her chest. She could see herself in the mirror, half dressed, and what she saw was… disappointing.

The weight pressed down. Marinette knew it well. It was crushing the air from her lungs. She sank to the floor. Relief, a way out! She dove for her phone.

Marinette fell off the divan. Her own thoughts echoed the shared impressions. She staggered toward her phone. No wait, she already had it. Manicured fingers stabbed the top contact.

"Daddy! I want you to get that stupid Ladyblog banned!"

"Honey? I can't just shut down a blog."

Her mind raced. "It's a menace! A hazard! It's utterly ridiculous! It gives away all of Ladybug's secrets. Shutting it down is for public safety! You have to do it daddy, and fast!"

"I'll see what I can do, sweetie. Daddy's in a meeting right now."

She stabbed hang up.

Marinette slumped to the floor, still clutching her phone, silent from a call she had never made, only heard. The anxiety that had engulfed her unwound itself. It was someone else's problem now. She was still sick to her stomach, expecting the voice to return, but she wasn't alone now. Someone else would have it worse.

She sniffled, pulling her arm back out of the Ladybug costume. She could keep liking Ladybug, she just had to be sure no one knew. A thought entered her mind, the most insane of things. She raised her hand to her mouth, and bit down.

Marinette yelped from the pain, but it worked. She was in her room. Her heart, just hers, was still pounding but the familiar began to overtake the unknown. Tikki floated over to her and Marinette heard her with ears she was sure were her own. "What happened, Marinette? Was it the amok?"

Marinette nodded while examining her hand. The anxiety was ebbing now too. This was her own emotion, risen in echo to what had come through the bond. "Yeah, I think so. I got stuck inside the connection."

You were using it?" Tikki's voice rose in shock.

Marinette winced, "I wasn't planning on doing anything. I just thought a look couldn't hurt. Apparently it can."

Tikki sighed. "People aren't simple, Marinette."

Marinette sulked. "I always figured Chloé kind of was."

Tikki gave her a courtesy giggle and flew up to brush her bangs. "Are you going to be okay?"

Marinette nodded, "yeah, Tikki. Thanks. I won't fiddle with it any more tonight. I promise."Her kwami nodded and floated off, leaving Marinette to her thoughts. She rab a finger along the bite mark on her hand and hissed in pain. Gouges, but no blood. One thing is for certain, I will have to be more careful next time.

With a flash, black wings propelled Crawley up, and at first the demon meant to just fly out toward that mysterious green, but curiosity got the better of Crawley and the freedom of flight, the air tangling cool around black feathers, made Crawley seek further and further heights.

“Wahoo!” Crawley shouted, voice disappearing into the wind as the Earth shrank beneath the demon’s feet and even the Garden with its massive walls looked miniscule, a toy model of the Creator’s own doing.

The air became thinner and thinner, hardly breathable and then it wasn’t breathable at all but that mattered little to Crawley. The loud rush of air about dark curling hair slowly transitioned into silence and then suddenly, the demon was so high that the thin glow of the edge of the atmosphere gleamed before Crawley, a fragile envelope that held the planet in the cusp of its translucent halo.

“So it’s a planet.” Crawley drooped, losing some of that euphoria in the disappointment that this creation was nothing special. There were billions and billions of these things out there, hunks of rounded rock and gas that orbited in servitude to their stars like ordinary demons serving at court, fetching documents and running little errands, obedient to their Princes of Hell.

“Not even a star, but living off reflected light.”

And yet the planet that should have been no more than an enslaved bit of rock seemed somehow far more than just that. Within this pale blue glow, the world alive in ways that Crawley had never noticed from a planet. Flashes and flickers of lightning lit up the surface of the Earth, tiny white-red and white-hot fingers of high-voltage electricity shot up into the vast darkness above in flickers that were almost too fast for the eye to see. Storms whirled and whorled, twisting with slow majesty through the atmosphere, tinting the blue oceans with creamy white clouds and Crawley shivered, eyes taking in all the beauty. And everywhere, big splotches of green and gold glimmering as the planet gently turned. This was nothing like a bit of bare rock tumbling through space trailing a cloud of dust and gas; if Crawley didn’t know better, it seemed as if the Earth was alive in its own way.

With a gasp the demon floated back down through the clouds, feeling the frozen air slowly warm about fluttering black robes, taking deep breaths as the air became breathable again. Crawley had lost sight of Eden but in some ways it didn’t matter; there was an entire world out there to explore and the Garden was no longer the only place that Crawley thought about.

In the deep ocean the demon drifted past jagged black smoking chimneys surrounded by forests of feathery plumed worms, misshapen rocks crawling with scuttling crabs. Slogging through brown-gold-blonde grasses, Crawley stopped to glance at the spindly trees that dotted the bog and turned to see stretches of gleaming blue-gray water reflecting the fog-splotched sky, tasting the scent of alkaline waters with a sensitive tongue. In the depths of a tangled jungle, the demon leaned against the vine-entangled trunk of a massive tree and listened as the birds and insects and monkeys filled the soft drizzling twilight with a chattering cacophony, calling each other to rest.

Upon a golden sun-baked hill scattered with gnarled oaks the demon watched wistful as two black ravens in flight as if in a dance, tangling and twisting through the air together in near-perfect symmetry, and at that moment, Crawley realized that it had been some time since the demon had spoken out loud. That it had been some time since the demon had even heard someone speak.

And that was a strange feeling; even in the quiet of Asmodeus’ little court it was usual to hear someone talking, usually Legion, in one or many forms, talking to Mephistopheles or Ligur or Asmodeus or just to Legion themselves, a little crowd of Legions in hot debate with other Legions until told off by someone higher ranking and scattered.

Crawley sighed, and watched the two soaring black ravens until they disappeared, darting off into the shelter of the trees. All this time exploring and it should have been wonderful, but slowly Crawley was realizing that an aching loneliness gnawed at something deep inside, and with it fury and desperation built up again within the demon’s awkward frame.

This exile was not by choice and even all these wonderful (and sometimes tasty) things of the Earth could not change that fact.

Longing and homesick for those strange things that the demon now realized were comforts, Crawley thought about Hell with a bittersweet nostalgia: the quiet bickering of many Legions squabbling amongst themselves, Mephistopheles’ amusing little anecdotes about adventures in other courts dodging crowds of Hellish bureaucrats, Ligur’s calm and authoritative demeanor...and the companionship and comfort of Asmodeus’ arms.

Shaken, Crawley darted up into the air in a flash of black feathers and was off.

It was a long, wandering flight, trying to ignore those uncomfortable feelings and Crawley tried to let it go, following flights of birds as they soared (inevitably scaring them), pods of dolphins as they swam (inevitably scaring them), and even some whales (who were not as afraid but certainly gave the black-clad demon strange and suspicious looks with their massive eyes as he hovered over their great shadowy forms, dampened by the hot spray of their exhaled breaths.

There was so much to see, so much to enjoy, and Crawley was going to enjoy it as much as possible before being recalled to Hell.

But then, soaring high over the vast expanse of ocean, Crawley caught a whiff of sulphur in the billowing clouds.

It didn’t usually smell like much of anything in Hell but hellfire certainly had something of a sulphurous quality, even if it was conjured up rarely and mostly used for things like punishment or documentation (which was a kind of punishment in and of itself). So to catch such a strong whiff of sulphur upon the Earth made Crawley wonder; was there another demon here? Had some royalty of Hell that had chosen to peek in, perhaps even a Prince of Hell?

Crawley saw a glint of glowing crimson and excited, the demon spiraled down out of tangled clouds and smoke in a slow, majestic glide, watching the red glow brightening against a splotch of dark green and as it became more clear, Crawley realized that this was no demonic royalty, but an island holding a terrible secret in the heart of its mountain peak.

Bubbling and surging molten lava, boiling crimson cooling to black before roiling and submerging into red, Crawley trudged barefoot over the heaving surface of the massive lava lake, undeterred by its formidable heat nor by the spray from bursting bubbles that fell as flecks of stone upon its surface only to melt back again.

The demon sat down. It was hot here, surrounded by liquid stone and fire, and certainly not nearly as nice as a sunny beach with swaying palm trees, but something about the unpleasantness was kind of pleasantly unpleasantly familiar. The demon laid down, lava surging beneath Crawley’s back in an almost soothing way as if somehow floating upon water but far more solid and unyielding.

Fire suddenly sprang up around Crawley and surprised, the demon sat back up.

“Demon Crawley. A message for you from Lord Asmodeus,” a familiar voice spoke and golden eyes blinked at stinging tears that steamed away in the unrelenting heat. That was Legion, most assuredly, and a moment later the flames showed the visage of the smiling Under-Duke of Hell.

“Y-yeah?” Unused and unpracticed, Crawley’s voice was a rasp.

"Victoria? Are you out here?" Vivienne's voice called out from inside, a white linen curtain was pushed aside and let the warm orange glow from the candlelight inside to pour out onto the dark. It backlit the butterfly's tall form, they hadn't moved an inch from their position in the courtyard. Their body as stiff and ridged as a corpse in rigor mortis.

So normal as usual. That was good.

A small movement, a turn of their head but their face imperceptible in the dark.

"Mm, yeah, did you need something, Vivienne?" They asked, sweet and calm. Ever so helpful as always.

The human stared at them for a good minute, studying their... Friend. Yes, friend, that was a better term for their alliance- wasn't it? It was about a year now since he freed them from their unjust prison. Still, they never forced friendship and affection on him. Just like he asked.

Victoria was respectful like that; he's never quite met anyone like them before.

They didn't even seem put off by his prolonged staring, always patient with him. Or anyone, really. They knew he would speak when he thought it was the right time for it.

Vivienne walked closer to their side, looking up at their tall friend to really inspect their face and expression. The dark obscured it, naturally, but the glittery scales and markings on their face glowed in the moonlight; their eyes an unearthly gold and blue. Elamoiel, one of the new demons traveling with them, said that Victoria's eyes were actually a stygian blue, something so impossibly imperceptible to his own human- homunculi- eyes. No matter how hard he tried wanted to see them.

As ever; their eyes held nothing. They were all to good to let their emotions out on clear display. They may be the most expressive and emotional of the party, but that just made them the best at masking their true feelings.

Conceding, Vivienne looked away at at the endless expanse of the dark jungle around them. It was loud, not quiet like most would assume of a late night. First there was the crackle of the torches' fire that luminated the pyramid. Loud crickets, frogs, and birds played their songs all around them. The occasional monkey chittered in the further off treetops. Jillian and Maya had both confessed previously that the howler monkeys frightened them both. Their howling loud enough to hurt and spark a great fear in the meeker of the group.

Victoria never once seemed to mind, but was entirely sympathetic to their pains. Offering beeswax or cloth to cover their ears. Scaring off any monkeys that got to close with their larger bright blue wings and inhuman whines. Tricks they must've learned growing up here.

"I assume you cannot sleep. Do you require my aid? Or shall I leave you be?" He asked.

The butterfly smiles serenely, "I'm fine, but thanks for asking." They paused, rubbing their thumb other their bruised knuckles, "but maybe... A little chat won't hurt right? Sorry that's not a real answer-" they thought over their words carefully to be clearer as Vivienne preferred, "You're right I can't sleep, but I don't need- want, anything to go back and sleep. I would appreciate speaking with you though, for a moment, to spend some energy."

"only if you want to speak, though." They added on.

Vivienne nodded, greatful for their clearer words, "and I will indulge you for asking politely." He said, leaving them room to speak for themselves.

Victoria sighed, "it's just- it's... Odd, being back here. Especially after being imprisoned for so long." Their stiff frame sagged, breathing a new life into it instead of sticking true to their undead status. their butterfly wings twitched like they wanted to unfold. "My parents are gone. They're bodies are here, frozen in my Mami's spell like statues. But their room, it's more like a mausoleum or tomb than the one I remember going back to sleep in."

They continued, "the villagers took care of the temple though, I'm glad it never got too overgrown. In some ways, it's like I never left. Never got taken. But I feel like that makes it hurt more, like I left it waiting for too long. All my responsibilities just as frozen as my parents." Victoria frowned, "I feel like I'm too different. Too wrong, to be here. I missed so much. It just..."

"... It just puts how long I was trapped into perspective. That's all."

Vivienne stayed silent, not very well versed in comforting others. But he respected and listened to their speech- that's all they knew he could offer.

"I think coming here... Makes me understand you and the others better." They said, finally.

He raised a brow, "how so?"

They hugged themselves, "I thought by coming here, I'd get to come home. Be safe. And... And have somewhere to just be me. I don't know how to explain it." They shook their head, "that I'd be able to share that with you all, but I guess I'm actually just like you; nowhere to go, nowhere to be, nowhere to stay."

'We're all just following you, Morpho! It'll be fun!'

'I've got nowhere else to be, Big Blue, what's one more road trip?'

'Nouveauheim city is too dangerous for us to stay in anymore, we'll come with you.'

'There's nothing left for me here. I don't care where we go as long as it's safe.'

'I will accompany you wherever you wish to go, Victoria, until my justice is fulfilled and I may continue on my own journey.'

"I'm sorry I strung you all along for nothing. There's nothing here for us like I thought." A wet breath escaped their lips, followed by a sniffle and teary eyes.

Vivienne felt disturbed by their display; it was more than off putting to the the cheerful Victoria this upset.

"While it is unfortunate that we cannot stay here; I do not believe the others will mind. Other than Elamoiel and their ilk, who we do not know enough to gauge their reaction, and Jackson who worried for his and his sister's security- they are well adjusted to instability and will adapt." He responded, hoping it would put them at ease.

But it only seemed to make things worse.

Victoria shuddered and quiet sobs racked their body, and an alarmed Vivienne squirmed in place.

"that's the thing! They shouldn't be worried! They shouldn't be used to this! Instability? Adaptability? They're kids!" They choked out, struggling to keep their voice down, "I'm supposed to protect them! I'm supposed to make sure they feel safe! But it's all my fault they've been dragged into this mess!" They hissed, "if they hadn't followed me none of them would be in danger right now!"

Vivienne took a step back as they raged. They wouldn't hurt him, but he refused to put temper their fire. That was something they had to reign in themselves.

A whine escaped them, "the supers were only after me and you because of what I am- and because you let me out. I didn't like it, but understood that you letting me out was your choice, Vivienne, you knew you'd get in trouble and did it anyways," their voice strained, "and I thank the stars every damn day you let me outta that hell hole- but Elamoiel and Artemisia? The can't kill me but they'd kill any demon on sight- let alone two with ties to the Ars Goetia..."

The butterfly scratched and tugged at their hair, a bad habit from their time imprisoned, "Jillian and Jackson are just two human kids who didn't know any better- now they've got a target on their backs for being associated with 'the deathwing' and I don't want them to get hurt in the crossfire. Maya and Zyanya will never get peace- the village is taking a big enough risk as it is housing us for the week before we move on to god-knows where because I sure ass hell don't."

They started, "Victoria-"

"DON'T CALL ME THAT! My name is Xipalli! It's always been Xipalli!" They mourned, "I want to be Xipalli again...!"

To be Xipalli would mean they never got stolen from their home, that the name Victoria would have remained a gift from their father instead of being bastardized against them, that they were never branded with that awful name, Deathwing.

Vivienne scowled at their childish behaviour, but careful tucked it away. As much as he disliked dealing with other's emotions like this, he new better than display his disgust so outwardly now. As they taught him, 'sometime you just have to bite your tongue to get the full picture. Or risk spilling paint over it all.'

So he bit his tongue and reach deep inside for patience and understanding. He rationalized all the stress his friend was under. It was only natural that it would have built up into this- they must've have been seeking a away to release all the pent up fear and stress as they searched for solutions for the group's unavoidable problems.

Their sobbing eventually dissolved away but small whimpers and sniffling still came from them, leaving red eyes, uneven breath, and a weary expression on their face. They rubbed at the corner of their eyes, "mm, sorry. For loosing it like that. I know you don't... Um. Like it. When people yell at you like that."

Vivienne's eyes narrowed, then nodded, "apology accepted, Xipalli. Do try to calm yourself tonight. We can continue this discussion and attempt to solve this dispute when you are in a better state of mind." He huffed, "I refuse to speak with you any further until we resolve this issue with the others. Clearly it was a mistake to put all this undo pressure onto you." He finished, not giving them time to respond before storming off.

Xipalli watched him retreat in despair, the linen curtain flying behind him. They cursed themselves, he still wasn't ready to deal with other's emotions but they just wanted someone to talk to. They just wanted to speak to their closest friend, and messed up his progress in the process.

Still...

'I refuse to speak with you any further until we resolve this issue with the others. Clearly it was a mistake to put all this undo pressure onto you.'

In his own way, as harsh as it was, he still managed to get through to them; give them time to calm down and offer to work together instead of shouldering it all themselves.

With one last relieving cry they swallowed down any grief and looked back at the familiar-yet-not jungle behind them again. As if they'd see something to change their mind and keep them here.

But when nothing happened they threw their head back and creeped inside the old temple. This wasn't one of their mother's stories. There were no stones or seeds to swallow and keep them bound to the land here. Not gods to claim them as their emissary, and no House of the Dead to hide in anymore.

They were long past their days as Itzapapalotl and Texopapalotl, helping their mami in Tamoanchan. Feeling sheltered and warm in their own House, where no living creature could reach them.

They didn't even bother looking towards the sky for their mother's fellow tzitzimime, the stars were too far to help them now.

"Tomorrow will be a different day."

They just have to make it till then.
