We have always heard of “You reap what you sow” and it is getting real day by day. We have seen the extent to which global warming can hamper our lives (or practically destroy us and wipe out the entire human race). If that was not enough, according to recent studies, it was discovered that extreme heat waves can have a negative impact on our mental health, cognitive abilities, and overall quality of life. March 2022 recorded the hottest temperature in the past 122 years (India Meteorological Department).
In plains, a temperature higher than 40 signifies a heatwave, whereas, in hilly areas, the limit is 30 and 37 coastal. These extreme temperatures can lead to exhaustion and restlessness which can eventually lead to depression and anxiety.
The Central Institute of Psychiatry in Ranchi noticed an increase in the footfall by 10 to 20%. The common symptoms presented were irritability, aggression, and excitement. This increases the frequency of substance abuse which is also causing an increase in mental health problems.
People who already have a psychiatric illness are affected more severely and are at a higher risk of death because of heat waves. Dehydration and electrolyte imbalance can be a reason behind changes in behavior patterns. In addition to this, people who use mood stabilizers containing Lithium need to take extra precautions as it further dehydrates the body.
What can you do? Well, apart from doing your part in saving the world from Global warming, you can make sure you hydrate yourselves constantly, avoid going out in the sun as much as you can, and indulge yourself in some physical activity during the comparatively cooler hours of the day and most importantly, check in with your therapists and make sure you got everything under control
Hi, this is my first post on tumblr. I honestly don't know what should I post here, but perhaps I could make this my "public" journal, LOL!
I promise to myself, I would start re-doing my thesis this month. I have to finish it by October since I want to graduate this year. I've procrastinated for a year, LOL! Honestly, my anxiety and depression were really bad since last year. I trembled everytime I was in relaxed position, be it sittinf or laying down. It felt like a mini earthquake. My body was a whack. That's why I decided to halt my thesis progress and just relaxed. Haven't told this to any of my family tho. Unsure what their reaction would be, since the last time I tried to breach the topic, my mum's reaction was not really positive. I was trying to talk about mental health problems in general back then, but when even a general topic of mental health problem was not received positively, how could I broach my topic then?
Haha. Wish me luck. Tho I am lucky to find great friends in uni. Cegil united 🖤
