My new favorite character Rathatayen. First of all, I LOVE THAT NAME. He is sassy, strong, will tell you like it is, and deserves so much love. He is from the novel Tournament Of Losers by Megan Derr. The tournament is for the poor to compete and win a chance at a better life married in a house of nobility, all the way up to the royal family. Rath only wanted to make enough money to get his idiotic father out of debt. He didn't expect to do as well as he has competing, and he certainly didn't expect to find himself in love with a noble-

I love when in Enemies to Lover romance books, after they kiss or do the deed their reaction is like, and I quote-
"It had never occurred to Beraht that he would ever be in such a position with the Scarlet Wolf. If the thought ever had crossed his mind, he would have forsaken any chance at the stars and killed himself to avoid going further into madness."

📚 December Reading Round-Up 📚
Ooops... I totally forgot to post my December reading round-up until now... But better late than never!
So, I did actually finish some books in December! Including Les Misérables, thanks to Les Mis Letters! I'm also back in my Vorkosigan era!
- The Ship of Dreams: The Sinking of the Titanic and the End of the Edwardian Era by Gareth Russell (back in my Titanic era! Very good and informative, and the audiobook narrator was nice to listen to; did have some quibbles with a later section, but the rest was pretty good)
- To Shape a Dragon's Breath by Moniquill Blackgoose (very good! Wrote a review for Strange Horizons about it!)
- Champion of Dusk and Dawn by Megan Derr (short but sweet, very enjoyable, liked the denouement)
- A Civil Campaign by Lois McMaster Bujold (so good and heartwarming and emotional, That Dinner Scene, gave me Greenwing and Dart vibes in the best way, so proud of myself for finishing it!)
- Thornhedge by T. Kingfisher (very nice and emotional, cute and heartwarming, loved the Muslim love interest, unfortunately wasn't able to sink fully into the prose and vibe as much as other books from this author)
- Shards of Honor by Lois McMaster Bujold (liked it a lot, can definitely see where Miles gets it from! Enjoyed the themes of honour and reputation and trying your best)
- Les Misérables by Victor Hugo (Very much enjoyed it, Waterloo was a highlight, sewer scene was unexpected, I kept encountering Les Mis in real life, very emotional last few chapters. So much truth and honesty in this book)

March Book Reviews: A Suitable Replacement by Megan Derr
Tumblr media
More reading through Derr's backlist since they're all free on hoopla. Meticulous researcher Maximilian has returned home only to find his devil-may-care sister has fled the country with a lover-- leaving behind an irate ex-fiance that Maximilian now has a legal obligation to placate. As this is a romance novel, this relatively simple conundrum snowballs into a ramshackle adventure across the continent that Maximilian was certainly not prepared for.
A fun and fluffy gay romance right on the edge of too silly for me to handle.

"Pantheon," Sarrica said. "If all that is true, which it must be, how did such abuse go unnoticed by the entire fucking rest of the army and mercenaries? Somebody, somewhere would have known what was happening and spoken up."
Kamir huffed a sad, tired laugh. "That's not how it works. Plenty of people knew the way my parents treated me. The way my despicable ex treated me. No one was ever willing to help me, not until I hired Velina, and she became the friend and ally I'd never had before. People get uncomfortable and don't know how to handle it, and so just ignore it. Others think, whether they realize it or not, that the victim must have done something to deserve it. If they're really being abused, why don't they just leave? Abuse is ugly and complicated and impossible to understand wholly if you've not been a victim yourself.
"Too often, people also simply refuse to believe the abuse is even happening, and that the abuser is somebody they respect and admire, because many abusers are very good at making certain of that." He turned to look at Chass, smiling softly. "He came to see me, not long after Sarrica issued his imperial ban, to reassure me all would be well, and that he understood me. Which he very much did; it was in his eyes. I don't know what exactly Chass has been through, but I know it broke him, and he regrets many things he did in that time. Whoever this Bateker was, I hope he's dead."

Can't wait to draw the rest of House Elciohr including the servants, parents, and siblings of Manfred.

The Mercenaries of the Stolen Moon by Megan Derr
goodreads
Tumblr media
For twenty years Myra has served the High King, so familiar, respected, and envied the rest of the palace calls him the High Secretary. For twenty years he has kept his secrets buried, and after so long he dares to believe he has left his past behind. But during the Festival of Harmony, tragedy strikes, and Myra's past is dragged into the present. Once third in command of Fathoms Deep, Charlaine is used to shadows and secrets, but even he is shocked to learn what his best friend, and the man he secretly loves, has been hiding all these years. In the wake of a terrible tragedy, he doesn't know what to do—except whatever it takes to help his friends. Though Jac is a member of the Three-headed Dragons and primary bodyguard to the High Consort, she is used to being overlooked and underestimated. But she didn't earn her spurs by backing down, and she's not about to do so now—even if she must defy the High Throne itself to save the man she's falling in love with.
Mod opinion: I haven't heard of this fantasy yet, but it sounds interesting.

"To the man who drew me from my books, but never took me from them. All my love, Tress"
I wonder what it says about me that I nearly wept when i read this line. Because all I could feel was despair that person does not exist for me and i am never gonna find them and fluffy coz that is the most romanticthing ever.
