Title: No Rest for the Wicked (AO3)
Summary: Nico didn’t make the decision to leave both camps lightly.//Bridging the gap between PJO and HOO from Nico’s perspective while adding an extra year in the mix for some breathing room.
Notes: I’ve had opinions on how quickly PJO led to HOO since the series was still being released. I think the time between the two series was too short to allow for proper fallout. I also think that HOO lost a lot of PJO’s charm by reducing the amount of risk for named characters. (On this note, I actually thought TOA brought a LOT of that back, though it’s actually my least favorite series in the overall series.) Anyway, this is just a fic about Nico if PJO ended with sufficient time between HOO for my taste.

12.31.2023
48 books this year. My hunger never ends. I am insatiable. Here's my reviews:
Five Classics by Agatha Christie 8/10 Started the year off strong with a handful of Christie's shorter classic mysteries
The Fortune Teller by Gwendolyn Womack 4.5/10 Super super cool story idea with very poor flow and had a cheating trope
Mountain Mama by Axsom & Pelham 6.5/10 A depressingly realistic look at life on the frontier for a single mom
A Well-Behaved Woman by Therese Anne Fowler 8/10 Alva Vanderbilt was so incredible
Followers by Megan Angelo 6.5/10 One of those books where you really don't care the first 2/3 and then you can't get over it for the last 1/3
The Return of the King by J.R.R. Tolkien 10/10 my annual reading of one of the Big Four, as always
"Kitchen Princess" Omnibus 2 by Ando & Kobayashi 9/10 I'm pretty sure I learned my love languages from the Kitchen Princess series as a kid
A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas 5.5/10 A little tropey and the riddle was stupid easy, but I love me a Beauty & The Beast retelling
Homeland: The Legend of Drizzt #1 by R.A. Salvatore 5.5/10 It really didn't need to be that long, but Salvy loves his extra DnD context
The Black Poets by Dudley Randal 10/10 When I tell you how often I think about the poetry from this book. When I tell you.
Mansfield Park by Jane Austen 6.5/10 Witty and wild for it's time, like all Austen novels, but she's boring and falls in love with her cousin
A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas 7.5/10 Turning the Beauty and the Beast retelling on its HEAD and using tidbits from the previous novel to change everything - but also very very smutty
Tithe by Holly Black 7/10 Rereading an old book I love in high school and finding that I still like it quite a lot
The Big Four by Agatha Christie 8/10 One of her biggie Poirot heists, super thrilling
"Kitchen Princess" Vol. 6 by Ando and Kobayashi 9/10 I have dreams, actual dreams, about these stories for weeks after reading them. Good dreams.
The School for Good and Evil by Soman Chianani 7/10 Decided to read this after watching the movie -- it might not be incredible storytelling but it's a fun story-world, so I decided to read it all
A World Without Princes by Soman Chianani 4/10 S for G&E 2 -It had some good bits, but was overall way too clumpy
The Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien 10/10 This was actually my first time reading it, and I LOVE getting all the universe context!!
To Weave a Web of Magic by Delacroix, Kurlana, McKillip, and Shinn 8/10 This series of short stories had some real bangers and some ehh
On The Incarnation by St. Athanasius 7/10 the deconstruction never stops, love that for us
Unfinished Tales by J.R.R. Tolkien 8.5/10 It was so cool reading some of his last unfinished works, it was really not cool reading a bunch of stories with no ending
The Viscount Who Loved Me by Julia Quinn 5.5/10 Where the first Bridgerton book was much better than it's season, the second book was exactly as whatever as the second season.
"The Tempest" by William Shakespeare 7.5/10 really very odd, but the overall vibe was so good and exactly what I needed after Quinn
The Last Ever After by Soman Chianani 6.5/10 S for G&E #3 Thus begins my attempt to finish the whole series because I bought them and they were sitting there
"Sophist", "Statesmen", "Parmenides" and "Philebus" by Plato 10/10 What's the difference between is and is not? Is 'is not' a state of being? lol I dunno
Quest for Glory by Soman Chianani 7/10 S for G&E #4 Okay finally these stories are getting interesting again
A Crystal of Time by Soman Chianani 6.5/10 Really pulling out some wackadoodle things for this one, but I wasn't against it too much
One True King by Soman Chianani 6/10 An alright wrap-up, but my boi Hort deserved a more thorough ending
In the Flo by Alisa Vitti 6.5/10 I learned more about my period in this book than in any health class, but it also got a little woowoo with moon phases
The Green Witch by Murphy & Hiscock 7/10 I had a late-night book buying stint where I bought like 7 witchy books and this was the first to arrive
Acting on Impulse by Mia Sosa 2/10 I have nothing particular against this author, but this was the book that convinced me that I could get a book published
A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J. Maas 7.5/10 Hoo boy does a lot of stuff go down in this spicy, spicy book.
A Court of Frost and Starlight by Sarah J. Maas 6/10 Just a fun little story about wildly traumatized characters
Save the Cat! Writes a Novel by Jessica Brody 9.5/10 One of the coolest things I've read, I learned so much about reading and writing
Walden and Others Writings by Henry David Thoreau 10/10 So much beautiful writing, this is going to be a regular reread for me
A History of Magic, Witchcraft, and the Occult by DK 8.5/10 Naturally one of my favorite books of the year was a literal textbook
A Court of Silver Flames by Sarah J. Maas 8/10 Apparently I didn't hate this book as much as I was supposed to, but also please mind your manners in shared eating spaces
American Brujeria by J. Allen Cross 6.5/10 It turns out Hispanic witches are super super Catholics, which I bet would make some non-Hispanic Catholics real angy
Magic Lessons by Alice Hoffman 7/10 Practical Magic #1 it was such a lovely writing style, like an actual witch telling a prophecy
House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J. Maas 8.5/10 A really cool story, standing ovation for Lehabah every day, but also weird that the big bad killer guy wears hats and watches basketball
Nevewhere by Neil Gaiman 9/10 Hadn't thought much of it while I was reading it, but this story had stuck with me like a bad cold baby
Bones of Faerie by Janni Lee Simmer 5.5/10 This one had been sitting in my TBR for too long, and it wasn't too bad
Well of Darkness by Weis & Hickman 8.5/10 Getting to read a fantasy story in the perspective of the bad guys? Heck yeah. So cool.
After the Funeral by Agatha Christie 6.5/10 This one had alllllllll the rich family drams
Ironside by Holly Black 8/10 my first time reading this finale of Black's trilogy, and I just feel like the main character could have been more logical or taken more action
A Writer's Notebook by Ralph Fletcher 2/10 I pretty much learned nothing, got nothing out of this
Search the Sky by Pohl & Kornbluth 8/10 Only took off points for misogyny, but it was from the 50s, otherwise a really cool story
The House Witch by Murphy & Hiscock 5/10 A follow-up from the first witchy book to arrive, this one didn't teach me as much about witches as I hoped it would
Approximately a 7/10 average for the whole year! I went out on a limb for a lot of books this year, and that was rewarding just about as often as it was disappointing, but I can at least say that I haven't DNF'd a book yet. I largely write these for myself, and I don't expect anyone to take the time to read it -- if you did, then you are a saint and a hero. May your pillows be cool, your blankets warm, and your eyesight always clear enough for reading.

1980s Horror Film Character Names
I totally forgot I’d started making this last year! I think I never posted it because I wanted to find more names, but there’s already a decent amount and I don’t feel like being that tedious about names right now lol.
It’s first & last names (separated for mix & match potential) of characters from iconic late 1970s & 1980s horror movies. I think I started looking for cheesier B-movies to pull from, but yeah it’s been a whole year so I forget.

fo4 companions favorite songs? thank u <333
Thank you for the request! I'm doing just all songs, not just Fallout 4 type songs if that's alright! And I kind of branched out into the music they like, also.
Cait: Naturally, Cherry Bomb by The Runaways. She likes Lil Peep.
Curie: Soldier, Poet, King by The Oh Hellos. Yes, yes, I know it's a popular song because of the quiz but it just makes me think of her.
Codsworth: Just sticks to the classics, the typical Fallout music style. But his favorite is definitely I Don't Want To Set The World On Fire by The Ink Spots.
Paladin Danse: I don't care what you say I REFUSE to acknowledge the fact that he only likes country. Lady Macbeth In Chains by Sufjan Stevens and Angelo De Augustine. I just think he'd really like it.
Deacon: WAP by Megan Thee Stallion and Cardi B. Likes the soundcloud rappers, ironically.
Hancock: Likes soundcloud rappers, unironically. Would also listen to Megan Thee Stallion, but instead he branches out. His favorite is Tuned In Freestyle. Honestly though, really rocks with Labrinth.
MacCready: Surf Curse, 100%. His favorite is In My Head Till I'm Dead by Surf Curse, but also likes some other songs like Black Out Days by Phantogram.
Nick Valentine: His favorite song of all time is La vie en rose by only Louis Armstrong. Likes classical music more than anything. Refuses to listen to rap.
Piper: Definitely likes Current Joys and Lorde. Her favorite is A World Alone by Lorde. Sometimes listens to new music, but she prefers to stay with what she has.
Preston Garvey: Mr. Garvey my beloved, I know for a fact you listen to Mr Loverman by Ricky Montgomery and To Build A Home by Patrick Wilson late at night.
X6-88: Honestly, I think this guy would love phonk-style music. Like Lost by Crim3s. Sole made him listen to Cpr by cupcakKe once. Never looked at them the same after that.
EXTRA
Elder Maxson: Unashamedly listens to Viva la Vida by Coldplay on repeat.

React: "Return to Me" (from the POV of Someone Averse to RomComs, Part VI): Bob, Bowling, and Joe Nearly Kills Me
From the diary of the headache wars, June 26th, 2023: I soldier on, but some burdens are too hard to carry. My grudge against Bob has been set aside for more pressing matters, namely the one weighing on my skull. Fear not: I have popped a pill and expect a thorough retreat from the enemy shortly.
We Pick Up from the Happy-Ending Slap on Bob's First Date
Tumblr media
Someone's riding high-- literally accompanied by "Good mooooooornin', life!" in the background. Wow, what a movie.
He even got everyone coffee, what a guy.
...You all know what everyone else is thinking.
Tumblr media
I paused right before he tossed away the cardboard carrier container. I was not prepared. What a guy.
He even went back for his crew with a little tune in his voice. What a guy.
You know they're also thinking: What a nut.
Tumblr media
Minnie/Grace is bowling with Megan/Bonnie, the fam, and her grandpa's friends. Joe's reaaaaaaaaaally pumped about winning.
Grace is trying to get Megan to give her encouraging two cents about the dating-thingy but Megan is too practical (and too focused on bowling) to advise anything other than just telling Bob the truth.
Tumblr media
Bob's here?? BOB'S HERE.
He got her a coffee. He's been passing out those celebration coffees like there's no tomorrow.
Nope, it's hot chocolate. "Thought you might be cold." I see that pointed look at her sweater.
There's an undertone there, mister. There's an undertone, there.
Tumblr media
Okay, so I see they've crossed into the casual couple "we make out in front of the family-- a.k.a. the gossips-- now" zone.
Grandpa Marty: you having to wrangle these two after practically setting them up on their first date is your fault and your fault alone.
Charlie's here. Charlie's always here.
OH, Charlie got invited in by his extroverted friend for an impromptu "the friends are all meeting now" date that he didn't know about and didn't sign up for.
Charlie just arrived, just got groupied, and just won. The talent of this man is unbelievable (and he doesn't understand it, either.)
Great comedic bit:
Charlie: "I didn't even know Bob bowled."
Joe (Megan-Bonnie's husband, man who probably met Bob today): "He doesn't."
Bob, why did you dedicate that shot to Grace when you don't bowl. Why did I have to be here to hear it? This can only end in disaster, oh no.
Heartfelt speech later-- "brought me back to the game after a 25 year absence"--
Tumblr media
a complete flop.
Tumblr media
"Hey, Bob, try the other arm!" yells Joe.
Okay, that saved me from dying-- thank you, Joe. And making the "I didn't got to 'Nam" follow up response to Charlie's "I'm a vet" was hilarious.
Never let it be said Bob's a quitter:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
NOT A "That's for you, Baby" WITH THE FINGER POINT AFTERWARDS THAT'S HILARIOUS.
Tumblr media
DD, you're killing me-- it's transformative cringe, reclaimed cringe, smoothing over the cringe and pretending the first mistake didn't happen but THIS second success DID, which strips away the cringe until all that's left is heartfelt sentiment.
Also, are you going to tell Bowling Boy about your scar, Grace? No?
Old man talking about his black favorite musicians with Charlie now; and Charlie gets takeout to last a week.
Bob is ALL OVER Grace, not afraid to say his plans before the group and herding her out to have one-on-one time alone in the garden.
Marty put a candle out there that repels all the bugs: "Every species but one"; then cuts off his friend's out-of-touch question by saying the bugs are "the sabertoothed fly" rather than unwanted suitors for his granddaughter.
Is he.. is he peeking?
HE IS PEEPING.
All the guys are now wondering why it's a big deal for Minnie/Grace-- wait, no, they're making fun of Wally again.
Bob's staring you down, Gracie, think fast.
Tumblr media
Angelo wants to play the lovebirds inspirational tunes. Grandpa Marty is not too keen... but I, FOR ONE, want to see where this goes.
Now they're all squabbling over what music to play for the kids. Gold, I tell ya. (Sophie the waitress insists they can make their own music.)
Grace: "I had a great time tonight."
Bob, staring her down. "So did I. So did I."
Tumblr media
Angelo finally settled with his chums on Frank Sinatra.
GRACE'S FACE FROZE WHEN SHE HEARD THE MUSIC.
She KNOWS.
And so does Bob.
Tumblr media
And. so. does. Bob.
Tumblr media
NOW THEY'RE ALL PEEPING.
I'm horrified and amused. I'd totally be the old men in this scenario but wouldn't want to be Grace.
Tumblr media
Bob wants to dance... okay.
Old men are jigging, too.
GRACE MIMICKED HIS SIGNATURE SWIRL-OUT-AND-BACK MOVE AND BOB IS SO HAPPY ABOUT IT.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay, Bob, the tensions between us are gone. I can't be mad if you can appreciate a gal who effortlessly copy-pasted a dance move.
I also like how Bonnie Hunt wrote that his first marriage was a "high school, forever young and untouched" type; but this is that "give-and-take, sit back and appreciate or stand up and dance, not caring that you could be spied or egged on" new relationship. Bob was perfect for Elizabeth then; but he suits Grace now.
Grace, my girl, it's getting closer to the 3/4 mark which is always when the disastrous misunderstanding happens in romcoms. Grace, don't do this to me.
Sophie the waitress's POV:
Tumblr media
The fun's just getting started.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Uh oh, lyric foreshadowing: "Is it that good turtle soup or merely the mock?"
Transition to Bob SHOVELING out his apartment so Grace can come over, doing construction for her family, watching her get loved on by his dog (eyy, Mel's back), and hanging out more with Bonnie/Megan's fam and kids (with Charlie-- yay he's there. Charlie's great.)
Tumblr media
MAYDAY MAYDAY JOE IS DOWN I REPEAT JOE IS HAVING A HEART PROBLEM.
Tumblr media
I forgot this was a gif and didn't know it was Joe, uhoh. My guess is he doesn't die but it brings up a lot of tough conversations.
JOE YOU'RE JUST FINE AND YOU JUST FAKED ME OUT-- HOW DARE YOU.
I JUST MADE PEACE WITH BOB AND NOW YOU GOTTA DO THIS TO ME??????
...Back to happy montage... >:(
Tumblr media
Everyone got Bob's last name as their group bowling jersey-- that's really sweet.
Tumblr media
Romance has finally bloomed for Sophie!
Tumblr media
And it loops back to the dance.
Wait, so did any of that happen? Or were they hopes and dreams?
Tumblr media
Nah-- I say it did; but a montage was a quick way to do everything.
WELP, Tumblr says to quit it for this post-- so we'll see if I can upload more later~!
Thank you for reading~
Enjoy!

3.09 - Captains and Vice-Captains
This is a part of my Subjectify Media conversation review that I wanted to share as straight-up meta, because it's something I keep thinking about regarding the banter between Sam and Jamie about the armband. It occurred to me that people might not know how vice-captains work in football teams, so here's me forcing football logic onto a throwaway moment to make it work in a way that means Sam and Jamie don't both feel OOC here.
‘Ted Lasso’ season 3, episode 9 in conversation: Second-best way it could’ve gone
Natalie: I have heaps of thoughts about the Roy and Isaac relationship and captain inheritance and how maybe Roy didn’t particularly think through his choice originally, but is able to help Isaac with shit he knows about himself that he’d love to break the cycle with for Isaac. Isaac picking Sam to take over while he’s banned is a choice with much less liability, and we knew Sam would become captain at some point this season from the trailer. And I think it’s a good choice but unfortunately they saw fit to include a moment about this that I HATED and don’t understand at all, and I think I’m like one of five people that hated it, which is that banter between Sam and Jamie about the captain’s band. I love their friendship and I’d love Sam teasing Jamie in any other moment. I think they’re amazing. But I think this scene did both Sam and Jamie dirty. You initially liked it on your watch, so try and talk me out of this.
Megan: So I think with this, in the moment I enjoyed it because Sam’s reaction, flipping Jamie off, startled a laugh out of me in a tense moment, and also Sam looked So. Freaking. Cute. Then speaking to you afterwards I did agree with what it was saying about Jamie in particular being quite off. It’s a tough one because okay… Going deep into football logistics, the way it works is you don’t just pick a random player to take over as captain. There is a hierarchy and there are usually people who are the named vice captains. Sometimes the manager makes these choices, or, more rarely, the players vote – Man City is a team that votes – but there is generally a “captain group.” For West Ham, for example, Mark Noble was captain for years, and Declan Rice was the main vice captain and often wore the armband because he started more often than Noble did. When Noble retired, Dec became captain and the manager, David Moyes, selected three vice captains to support him in the various duties – Aaron Cresswell, Angelo Ogbonna and Lukasz Fabianski.
So within football realism, it is extremely reasonable that Jamie and Sam are both already Richmond’s selected vice captains, and with that in mind yes, Isaac gives it to Sam, but I don’t think he did that out of like specifically choosing Sam over Jamie, right? I think it was just geography based – Sam was next to him, he would have been the easiest to shove the band at, rather than Jamie.
So my good faith interpretation, that works for their characters in my head is that Sam physically got the band due to proximity, but maybe Jamie, an established vice captain is thinking – and I think, quite fairly – “You know what, we’re a goal down, we’ve lost a player, I might be the best person tactically in this situation to wear the band and captain us through this situation where we are going to have to Total Football the shit out of the rest of this match.” So this was Jamie broaching the topic, and then Sam responding in a light-hearted way to kind of break the tension of the room, but also him thinking “No you know what, I think I’d be a good person in this situation to keep heads calm, and also argue the ref down from any later cards, so we don’t risk losing any other players.”
And I am putting a LOT of thought behind how that very short moment, clearly played for laughs, could be interpreted to make it work for the characters, because the alternative is that Jamie was having a big ego moment and wanting the captain band that he had not been honoured with, and Sam was apparently so unaffected by Isaac’s angst that he’s being a little shit two seconds later. And neither of those sit quite right with me.
Natalie: Yeah but you’re aware that the last sentence, the alternative, is how it played to 99.99% of people who are not logistically thinking about the reality of clubs having an existing captain pool, right? Which, really, maybe we should have seen before, because it isn’t as if Isaac has played every single minute of every single match since Roy gave him the armband. When Isaac gets subbed off, for any reason – fitness, a yellow card meaning they don’t want to risk a red, anything at all – he would have to pass the band to someone on the pitch. This is why they have vice captains and we see this in the season 1 finale with Roy. Isaac starts the match as the substitute captain, Roy gets the band back when he starts the second half, then he passes it back to Isaac when he limps off. This is a thing. There have to be people the band goes to when the captain comes off the pitch before the match ends.
And Sam and Jamie both being vice captains absolutely makes sense logically, but this is not how the joke is played, and as you admit, you’re forcing this idea into your reading, and making your reading more realistic than Ted Lasso actually is, because the alternative is a moment that kind of truly sucks for both Sam and Jamie, but sadly, I think that alternative is absolutely what the show meant. This is their way of saying “Hahahahah! Remember, Jamie is still full of himself and is disrespecting Isaac’s clear choice and Sam’s power as a team leader, and he’s presumptively trying to put himself above Sam. Because he’s a prick, remember?” And also saying “Hahaha! Sam, in this moment, is able to recover so much from Isaac’s clear distress that he’s keen to mock and tease his friend for his ridiculous ego, and in doing so, giving the audience the message that hahahaha, how silly it is to think that Jamie would ever be captain!”
It is, boiled down, banter that says Jamie’s an inflated egomaniac who is inappropriately trying to take something from his friend that was very purposely given to him, and Sam’s response both makes a mockery of the idea that Jamie could be a valid captain choice and shows that he isn’t very affected by Isaac’s big emotional moment, if he’s able to be so playful. It makes each of them look like arseholes in a way I found totally out of character for both of them. There are a million other ways to have had Sam tease Jamie about his ego, so many other moments where we could have seen this energy. But because Ted Lasso has never taken pains to establish the captain system, and because Isaac didn’t throw the band down in the centre for them to fight over, Isaac selecting Sam and then Jamie being like, “No, me actually,” and then Sam being like, “LOL, as if it’s you?” I hated it IMMEDIATELY. And I’m sad about not enjoying it. It’s not like I’m trying to take these things in bad faith, but it genuinely just felt very wrong to me. And this is what I was referring to when I said I didn’t like the way they burst the tension bubble on the Isaac outburst. It is meant to be a “letting the air out” moment, but for me it was really not fun.
Megan: Absolutely. Like I said I didn’t have the immediate hatred, because it broke me out of the tension and because of Toheeb Jimoh’s face. But once you pointed this out, it did sit really bad with me, and that’s why I had to, as you say, force this reading into working for me, to contradict that. So yeah, look, I’m with you on what it means for the characterisation, and I really hope we get a moment of Jamie wearing the armband down the line more organically. He’s earned it.
Natalie: It’s not even that I think he should have had it here instead of Sam, to be clear!
Megan: Oh yeah, I get it, it’s just the way they had the interaction play out.
Natalie: I just don’t think it’s outlandish to think he’s a candidate and this treated him it was. Also his disrespect of Isaac’s obvious choice, because he had intentionally handed it to Sam. It was just a mess for me. And there are so many other ways we could have got Sam teasing Jamie about being bigheaded, but for Sam to be playful and competitive in this moment rather than, you know, serious and worried. So weird to me. And everyone I’ve talked to who saw the episode loved it, LOL.
‘Ted Lasso’ season 3, episode 9 in conversation: Second-best way it could’ve gone

NEW X-MEN EPISODE 8
EPISODE 8: U-MUTANTS PART 1
WE OPEN UP ON A BLACK-AND-WHITE CAMERA FEED OF A SCHOOL AUDITORIUM AS A PIMPLE-FACED TEENAGER STANDS ONSTAGE HOLDING A NOW-SMOKING GUN. HE STANDS OVER THE DEAD BODY OF ANOTHER TEEN, ASKING IF ANYONE ELSE WANTS TO SNEER AT HIS COMIC COLLECTION, OR MOCK HIS ANIME DVDS, OR COMPLAIN ABOUT HOW HIS SO-CALLED “OBSESSION” WITH MUTANTS. HE SAYS THAT HE’S PROUD TO BE A GEEK, AND HE’S PROUD TO BE PART OF THE INTERNATIONAL U-MAN ARMY.
HE THEN SAYS THAT THE REASON WHY HE KILLED ARTHUR SWIFT, ATHLETE, MORON AND BULLY, HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH HIM BEING A STEREOTYPICAL JOCK. IT WAS MOSTLY BECAUSE OF HIS BIG SECRET. YES, ARTHUR SWIFT WAS A CLOSET GAY, BUT THAT’S NOT THE SECRET HE’S TALKING ABOUT. HE REACHES INTO HIS POCKET AND PULLS OUT A PAIR OF EYES, HOLDING THEM PROUDLY.
BOY: ARTHUR WAS ALSO A MUTANT. AND THESE ARE HIS X-RAY EYEBALLS.
HE GRINS AND SAYS THAT WHEN HE JOINS THE U-MEN AND HAVE THEM IMPLANTED, THEY’LL BE HIS EYES. AND THEN THE WEIRD WILL BE KINGS. NO GIRL IN THE HALL WILL BE SAFE FROM HIS X-RAY…
SUDDENLY, HE FALLS TO THE GROUND, A SMALL HOLE IN HIS HEAD. THE CAMERA TURNS OVER TO THE AUDITORIUM’S ENTRANCE AS A POLICE OFFICER ENTERS, HOLDING A GUN. THE CAMERA FEED IMMEDIATELY CUTS OUT.
CUE INTRO AND CREDITS.
WE OPEN UP AT XAVIER’S WHERE CESSILY, CLARICE, SOFIA, SANTO, JULIAN, SOORAYA, JAY, MEGAN, ROXY, CAM, AURA, ANGELO, JENNY, AND SHELA SIT ON THE COUCH IN THE LOUNGE. CESSILY LOOKS OVER AT THE TABLE WHERE HER LAPTOP RESTS ALONGSIDE SOME POPCORN, CANDY, AND SODA BEFORE ANNOUNCING THAT THEY’RE ALL SET TO WATCH THE PILOT EPISODE OF HAZBIN HOTEL. SOFIA STATES HER EXCITEMENT BEFORE ASKING WHAT IT IS. SOORAYA IMMEDIATELY SAYS THAT SHE DOESN’T KNOW WHAT IT IS EITHER.
CESSILY: WELL, FIRST OFF, THE SHOW TAKES PLACE IN HELL. IT’S ABOUT THE DAUGHTER OF SATAN, CHARLIE, AND WHEN SHE SEES THAT THEY’RE HINDERING OVERPOPULATION IN HELL BY EXTERMINATING PEOPLE, SHE COMES UP WITH AN IDEA TO MAKE A HOTEL THAT REHABILITATES SINNERS SO THAT THEY CAN EVENTUALLY GO TO HEAVEN.
SOFIA SMILES, SAYING THAT THE SHOW SOUNDS INTERESTING, AND CESSILY WARNS HER THAT THERE ARE SOME ADULT JOKES IN THE VIDEO. SOFIA AND SOORAYA NOD BUT BEFORE CESSILY CAN PRESS PLAY, EMMA FROST SENDS OUT A TELEPATHIC MESSAGE REQUESTING X-23 AND HELLION TO REPORT TO HER OFFICE. JULIAN SIGHS AND WALKS OUT OF THE ROOM WHILE CESSILY FAKE-BEGS HIM TO COME BACK.
OUTSIDE, MONET WATCHES THEM ALL IN THE LOUNGE WITH A SIGH BEFORE DANI WALKS UP TO HER, DRESSED IN WINTER CLOTHES. SHE TELLS HER THAT IT’S MUCH WARMER INSIDE, BUT MONET TELLS HER THAT SHE’S FINE. DANI IMMEDIATELY ASSESSES THAT MONET DOES FEEL BAD ABOUT THE TRICK SHE PULLED ON HALLOWEEN, AND MONET TURNS AWAY FROM HER. DANI TELLS HER THAT IT’S ALL RIGHT. WHATEVER SHE HAS ON HER SHOULDERS, SHE CAN LET IT OUT.
MONET: YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT IT’S LIKE TO BE ME. I’M BLACK, MUSLIM, AUTISTIC, AND FRENCH, AND MY DAD HAS LOTS OF MONEY AND WEALTH. PEOPLE LOOK AT ME AND THEY SEE SOMEONE WHO THEY SHOULD BE SCARED OF. SO I JUST PLAYED ALONG. BITCHED MY WAY TO THE TOP. AND THEN… THEN JULIAN DUMPED ME, AND I WAS PISSED. I MADE A MISTAKE, BUT I DON’T THINK JULIAN WILL FORGIVE ME.
DANI: THAT’S GREAT, MONET. AND THE FIRST STEP TOWARD HEALING IS ACCEPTING THAT YOU NEED TO BE HEALED. COME INTO MY OFFICE LATER AND WE’LL TALK.
AS DANI WALKS OFF, MONET LOOKS BACK AT HER, ALMOST LIKE SHE’S CONSIDERING THE IDEA.
MEANWHILE, JULIAN AND LAURA WAIT OUTSIDE EMMA’S OFFICE AND JULIAN ASKS HER IF THEY’RE GOING TO TALK ABOUT IT (IT BEING THE SORT OF KISS THAT THEY HAD WHEN LAURA ALMOST DIED). LAURA IGNORES HIM WHILE THE DOOR OPENS. ALANI WALKS OUT AND EMMA TELLS THEM TO COME IN.
WHEN THEY WALK IN, EMMA TELLS THEM THAT THEY MUST ALREADY KNOW WHY SHE WANTS THEM THERE, BUT JULIAN AND LAURA SAY THAT THEY HAVE NO IDEA. EMMA THEN ASKS THEM IF THEY’VE SEEN THE NEWS, BUT LAURA SAYS THAT SHE WAS MEDITATING WITH SOORAYA, AND JULIAN SAYS THAT HE WAS ABOUT TO WATCH TV WITH THE OTHERS. EMMA SIGHS, COMMENTING ABOUT KIDS TODAY BEFORE TURNING ON THE MINIATURE TELEVISION IN HER OFFICE.
REPORTER: MELITA GARNER HERE WITH CHANNEL THIRTEEN NEWS. LAST NIGHT, MARTHA JOHANNSON, THE SIXTEEN-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER OF THE GOVERNOR OF SAN FRANCISCO, RAN AWAY, LEAVING A NOTE WRITTEN IN HER OWN LUMINOUS BLOOD. MARTHA WAS CONFIRMED TO HAVE BEEN A MUTANT THE PREVIOUS DAY, WHICH MAY HAVE CAUSED HER TO RUN AWAY FROM HOME. WITH THE CURRENT THREAT OF THE TERRORIST GROUP KNOWN AS THE U-MEN, WHO HAVE MADE A NAME FOR THEMSELVES IN THE GRUESOME ACT OF KILLING MUTANTS AND GRAFTING THEIR BODY PARTS ONTO THEMSELVES, MARTHA’S FAMILY IS VERY CONCERNED AND WORRIED FOR THEIR DAUGHTER. AS OF NOW, POLICE AND THE FBI HAVE FOUND NO LEADS AS TO HER WHEREABOUTS.
EMMA THEN EXPLAINS THAT THIS POOR GIRL NEEDS THE X-MEN’S HELP, AND THIS COULD BE A GOOD TRIAL RUN TO SEE HOW THEY WORK IN THE FIELD. BEFORE JULIAN CAN ASK WHY SHE CAN’T RECRUIT THE WHOLE SQUAD, OR SIGN UP THE HELLIONS FOR THE OPERATION, EMMA DISMISSES THEM. AS THEY LEAVE, JULIAN GRINS, SAYING THAT HE’S ALWAYS WANTED TO BE A DETECTIVE. HE’S ALWAYS THOUGHT OF HIMSELF AS A SHERLOCK HOLMES TYPE, AND HE THEN COMMENTS THAT WEDNESDAY ADDAMS ALSO HAS SOME DETECTIVE SKILLS. LAURA GIVES HIM A SARCASTIC LOOK BEFORE WALKING OFF.
JULIAN: *TO HIMSELF* IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A COMPLIMENT.
AS THEY WALK OFF, THE OTHER STUDENTS HAVE BEGUN WATCHING THE VIDEO, AND MUSIC STARTS TO PLAY ON THE SCREEN.
------------------
- CHARLIE -
"AT THE END OF THE RAINBOW THERE'S HAPPINESS, AND TO FIND IT OFTEN I'VE TRIED, BUT MY LIFE IS A RACE, JUST A WILD GOOSE CHASE, AND MY DREAMS HAVE ALL BEEN DENIED. WHY HAVE I ALWAYS BEEN A FAILURE? WHAT CAN THE REASON BE? I WONDER IF THE WORLD'S TO BLAME, I WONDER IF IT COULD BE ME. I'M ALWAYS CHASING RAINBOWS, WATCHING CLOUDS DRIFTING BY, MY SCHEMES ARE JUST LIKE ALL MY DREAMS, ENDING IN THE SKY."
------------------
SOFIA STATES HER AMAZEMENT THAT THE SHOW HAS MUSICAL NUMBERS, AND CESSILY TELLS HER THAT SHE KNEW SHE’D LIKE IT.
CLARICE: Y’KNOW, MY LITTLE RIVER LILY DEFS HAS A GOOD SINGING VOICE HERSELF.
CESSILY: WAIT. YOU GUYS HAVE PET NAMES FOR EACH OTHER NOW?
CLARICE: YUP.
CESSILY CACKLES AS SHELA SAYS THAT WHOEVER PLAYS CHARLIE HAS GOOD PIPES, WHICH CAM AGREES TO.
MEANWHILE, JULIAN AND LAURA HEAD OVER TO THE JOHANNSON’S PLACE, WHICH APPEARS TO BE DESERTED. JULIAN HAS, OF COURSE, DRESSED HIMSELF IN A SHERLOCK HOLMES HAT, AND COMMENTS THAT THE PARENTS MUST’VE MOVED OUT AFTER MARTHA RAN AWAY. THEY THEN HEAD OVER TO MARTHA’S ROOM, WHICH, AS JULIAN DESCRIBES IT, SEEMS LIKE A STEREOTYPICAL TEEN GIRL BEDROOM.
LAURA IGNORES HIM AND NOTICES A GLOWING LIQUID SUBSTANCE ON THE WALL. SHE WALKS UP TO IT AND JULIAN REALIZES THAT IT MUST BE THE GLOWING BLOOD THAT THE REPORTER WAS TALKING ABOUT. LAURA RUNS HER FINGER THROUGH IT AND SNIFFS, TELLING JULIAN THAT SHE HAS A LEAD ON MARTHA’S SCENT. IT’S FAINT, BUT SHE COULD MAKE DO. JULIAN AWKWARDLY COMMENTS ON HER DETECTIVE SKILLS BEFORE PULLING OUT HIS PHONE TO DIAL CAM. MAYBE WITH THEIR COMBINED TRACKING ABILITIES, THEY COULD FIND HER SOONER. LAURA LOOKS AWAY, KNOWING THAT HE ACTUALLY INTENDS TO MAKE THIS LESS AWKWARD WITH A THIRD WHEEL.
BACK IN THE LOUNGE, CAM’S PHONE VIBRATES, BUT THEY TURN IT OFF, SNUGGLING UP BESIDE AURA WHILE THE GROUP WATCHES THE VIDEO, WHERE AN ENCOUNTER BETWEEN THE PROTAGONIST, CHARLIE, AND THE NEWS REPORTER KATIE KILLJOY IS TAKING PLACE.
-----------------------------
CHARLIE: HI, I'M CHARLIE.
KATIE: KATIE KILLJOY. I’D SAY IT'S A PLEASURE TO MEET YOU, BUT THAT WOULD BE A LIE. YOU CAN PUT YOUR HAND AWAY, SWEETIE. I DON'T TOUCH THE GAYS. I HAVE STANDARDS.
CHARLIE: YEAH. HOW'S THAT WORKING OUT?
KATIE: LOOK, MY TIME IS MONEY, SO I'LL MAKE THIS SHORT. YOU’RE NOT HERE BECAUSE WE WANTED YOU HERE. YOU'RE HERE BECAUSE JEFFREY COULDN'T MAKE IT FOR HIS CANNIBAL COOKING SEGMENT. YOU MAY BE SOME ROYAL BIGSHOT, BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN SHIT TO ME. I'M TOO RICH AND TOO INFLUENTIAL TO A FLYING FUCK ABOUT WHAT SOME TUX-WEARING DEMON PRINCESS WANTS TO ADVERTISE.
CHARLIE: BUT I...
KATIE: SO DON'T GET CUTE WITH ME, OR I WILL FUCKING BURY YOU.
-----------------------------
BACK IN THE LOUNGE, CESSILY AND SOFIA COMMENT ABOUT WHAT A JERK AND A HOMOPHOBE KATIE KILLJOY IS.
AS THE TV KEEPS PLAYING, WE ZOOM IN ON THE SCREEN. WHEN WE ZOOM OUT, WE APPEAR IN A SMALL ROOM WITH PEOPLE SHOUTING IN THE BACKGROUND. SUDDENLY, A DARK-SKINNED TEENAGE GIRL CRASHES INTO THE TV, KNOCKING IT OFF THE STAND. A BEER-BELLIED MAN SMOKING A CIGAR HITS HER AGAIN, YELLING THAT SHE NEVER SHOULD’VE GROWN UP. THE ROOM STINKS LIKE A CHEMICAL TOILET SINCE LAST WEEK. A WOMAN STANDS IN THE BACK, AFRAID.
GIRL: THERE’S NOTHING WRONG WITH ME! I’LL GET YOU SOME DAY! I’LL SUE YOUR FAT BUTT AND GET YOU LOCKED UP AS A CHILD MOLESTER!
MAN: DEAR LORD, YOU GIVE ME MUTANT BABIES AFTER ALL I DID.
WOMAN: ANGEL’S NOT EVEN YOURS! SHE’S NOT WHAT YOU THINK!
THE MAN TELLS HER TO SHUT UP AS THE GIRL, ANGEL, RUNS OUT THE HOUSE WHILE HE TRIES TO WHIP HER WITH HIS BELT. HE SCREAMS AT HER TO GET OUT, CALLING HER A FILTHY MUTANT AS SHE RUNS AWAY. ANGEL MAKES IT SEVERAL FEET AWAY FROM THE HOUSE BEFORE FALLING TO THE GROUND IN TEARS, PRAYING FOR HER NOT TO BE A MUTANT.
A FEW FEET ACROSS TOWN, JULIAN AND LAURA WALK OUT OF THE JOHANNSON HOME AND JULIAN INFERS THAT IF MARTHA WERE HURT, SHE MUST HAVE GONE SOMEWHERE TO GET A MINI-ADHESIVE BANDAGE. LAURA NODS, SAYING THAT MARTHA’S TRAIL LEADS TO A DRUGSTORE. AS THEY HEAD IN, LAURA WALKS UP TO THE CASH REGISTER WHILE JULIAN LOOKS FOR FOOD. THE CASHIER IS A PINK-HAIRED TEENAGE GIRL IN FAB-GOTH CLOTHES (KIND OF A MIX OF JULES VAUGHN FROM EUPHORIA AND CAT ZIM FROM FUNHOUSE), AND SHE GIVES LAURA A CONFUSED LOOK AS SHE ASKS HER QUESTIONS.
EVENTUALLY, THE CASHIER TELLS HER THAT SHE DOES REMEMBER ONE GIRL COMING IN ASKING FOR A BANDAGE. SHE SAYS THAT IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN A TRICK OF THE LIGHT, BUT SHE REMEMBERS SEEING THE GIRL’S BLOOD GLOWING. LAURA NODS, TELLING HER THAT HER INFORMATION HELPS A LOT, BEFORE JULIAN WALKS UP WITH SEVERAL FOOD PACKETS.
MEANWHILE, INSIDE A FOREST CLEARING, ANGEL WAKES UP SLOWLY, ONLY TO FIND HERSELF INSIDE THE RUINS OF A COCOON. STANDING OVER HER ARE THREE MEN IN BLACK HAZMAT SUITS, EACH ONE HOLDING A GUN. WE THEN ZOOM OUT TO REVEAL A PAIR OF BLUEBOTTLE FLY WINGS GROWING OUT OF ANGEL’S BACK. ONE OF THE MEN TELLS HER THAT THIS WON’T HURT A BIT, GRABBING HER WRIST.
ANGEL OPENS HER MOUTH TO SCREAM BUT AN ACIDIC SUBSTANCE SHOOTS OUT, EATING THROUGH THE FABRIC AND SOME FLESH OF THE MAN’S ARM. THE OTHERS POINT THEIR GUNS AT HER, BUT ANGEL’S WINGS BUZZ RAPIDLY, DEAFENING THEM UNINTENTIONALLY. ANGEL STARTS TO FLY OFF, BUT DOES SO RATHER CLUMSILY, EVENTUALLY FLYING INTO A TELEPHONE POLE. AS SHE FALLS TO THE GROUND, DAZED, THE MEN APPROACH HER.
BACK AT XAVIER’S, MONET STARTS TO WALK INTO THE BUILDING. SHE STOPS SUDDENLY, AS IF RECONSIDERING HER CHOICE, BUT THEN OPENS THE DOOR AND WALKS IN. SHE WALKS PAST THE LOUNGE WHERE THE STUDENTS ARE CONTINUING TO WATCH HAZBIN HOTEL. CURRENTLY, THE SPIDER DEMON ANGEL DUST AND THE CYCLOPS DEMON CHERRY BOMB ARE BUSY FIGHTING EGG MINIONS BELONGING TO THE SNAKE DEMON SIR PENTIOUS.
-----------------------------
ANGEL DUST: THESE CRAZY BITCHES ARE NO FUN. I'VE BEEN CLEAN FOR TWO WEEKS.
CHERRY BOMB: HOLY SHIT.
ANGEL DUST: WELL, SORTA CLEAN. JUST AS CLEAN AS YOU CAN GET A SHITLOAD OF BOLIVIAN MARCHING POWDER.
SUDDENLY, A LONG CHAIN WRAPS AROUND THE PORN STAR, FLINGING HIM THROUGH THE AIR AND CAUSING HIM TO CRASH TO THE GROUND, HARD.
ANGEL DUST: OOH! HARDER DADDY!
SIR PENTIOUS: SON?
-----------------------------
CONFUSED, SOORAYA ASKS WHAT THAT MEANS, AND CESSILY TELLS HER THAT IT’S ONE OF THOSE INAPPROPRIATE JOKES SHE MENTIONED. SHE TELLS HER THAT SHE’LL EXPLAIN IT TO HER IF SHE’S READY TO HEAR IT.
MEANWHILE, LAURA AND JULIAN WALK OUT THE DRUGSTORE AND LAURA CONTINUES TO TRACK. SHE SAYS THAT SHE NOW SMELLS MULTIPLE SCENTS WITH MARTHA. THEY SEEM HUMAN, BUT THEY’RE DIFFERENT FROM THE REGULAR HUMAN SCENT. JULIAN SIGHS, ASKING LAURA IF SHE’S CAUGHT ON THAT EMMA ASSIGNED THEM BOTH FOR A REASON, THAT REASON BEING THE CLEAR UNSPOKEN THING BETWEEN THEM. LAURA IGNORES HIM, SUDDENLY PERKING UP WHEN SHE HEARS A SCREAM. JULIAN TELLS HER THAT THEY NEED TO STOP AND HELP.
LAURA TELLS JULIAN THAT THEY HAVE NO TIME FOR THIS, BUT SIGHS WHEN JULIAN STARTS RUNNING OFF IN THE DIRECTION OF THE SCREAMS. THEY EVENTUALLY FIND A BLACK TRUCK PARKED NEAR A FOREST, AND LAURA COMMENTS THAT SHE SMELLS THE SAME TYPE OF SCENT AS THE ONES WITH MARTHA, AND JULIAN TELLS HER THAT IT MUST BE A LEAD. THEY PEEK IN AND NOTICE THE MEN IN THE BLACK SUITS HOLDING SURGICAL TOOLS AND STANDING OVER A SEMI-CONSCIOUS ANGEL. THEY IMMEDIATELY TURN AND FACE THEM, AND JULIAN SIGHS, RECOGNIZING THEIR GARB.
JULIAN: U-MEN. THIS DAY JUST GETS BETTER AND BETTER.
TO BE CONTINUED…
